Howdy Folks!

Hope this finds you doing well and enjoying some quality saddle time. What happened to Spring time? We went from cold temperatures to scorching heat. Spring time is my favorite season with all the new green growth and flowers blooming. I love to smell flowers like honeysuckle, when I ride. Now is the time for the first hay cutting and the fresh cut grass scent smells wonderful too. East Tennessee is a beautiful place and we love living and riding here. The recent biker gang shooting event in Waco, Texas was a big blow to the motorcycle community and businesses. We have worked hard to educate non-riders and have tried to change the old stereotype that motorcycle riders are "gang members". As ridiculous as that sounds, there are still people out there who have that association. The 99% of motorcycle riders are generally law-abiding citizens who include professional business people and can afford the upscale motorcycles, accessories, clothing, traveling and all the other aspects of motorcycles. After this event occurred, some businesses decided to cancel their bike nights and pull away from the motorcycle world, which we were sad to hear about. Those businesses are cutting out a big section of customers and we hope they reconsider turning their backs on riders. That was an isolated, unique and horrible event; it should never have happened. Some cities have revoked rally permits after event organizers invested money into events. That will have long-term negative effects on everyone in the motorcycle world. We will overcome this, too!

Harley-Davidson Offers Free Riding Academy To All U.S. Military

rom the flight deck of the USS Yorktown, Harley-Davidson today announces it is offering all current and former U.S. military free Riding Academy motorcycle training. The new “Learn to Ride” program, open to active-duty, retired, reservists and veterans, begins on Armed Forces Day, May 16 and runs through Sept. 13. Harley-Davidson teamed up with U.S. Army veteran and two-time Paralympian, Heath Calhoun, and six riders who are also in the military, to make today’s announcement by demonstrating fundamental motorcycle riding exercises aboard the USS Yorktown in Charleston, S.C. “As a veteran, and a rider, I have found that nothing is more therapeutic than getting on my bike and taking a ride,” said Calhoun, Wounded Warrior Project(r) Alumnus and owner of a 2014 Harley-Davidson Tri-Glide. “I am honored to help Harley-Davidson

2015 Honda VFR Interceptor By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

eintroduced in 2014 by popular demand, the 2015 VFR Interceptor had orders for purchase before they landed on some of the Honda dealership’s floors. With its 782cc liquid-cooled 90-degree V-4 engine, the Interceptor has more torque, power and speed than you’ll ever need. And the V-4 VTEC engine runs on two valves per cylinder at low engine speeds LED He adlight and four valves per cylinder at higher revs which delivers more high-end power. It’s also equipped with fuelinjection mapping for a better low-end torque feel.

Jumping on it for the first time it felt like a true Honda sport bike, but I quickly learned that it was a lot more comfortable to ride longer distances once I took it for a 75-mile ride route. t dash Running through the East Tennessee Digital instrumen mountain curves brought about the thoughts of racing Road Atlanta without being wrist or back tired. During the ride, I stopped at a roadside café and was met by a couple other sport touring riders that asked me, “Great looking motorcycle…why didn’t you get a matching helmet?” (Speaking about my blue and silver full face helmet) That’s when they realized I was test riding one Traction control & heated for a Honda review. They ran about 20 grip miles with me until we took separate routes. It’s great to meet new friends (Robert & Bill) while riding. The Interceptor has a huge following and is really in a class all its own. It’s a cross between sport bike and luxury tourer. I believe someone said it was a combination of a “hard-edged, trackfocused and unforgiving race-replica

motorcycle, and a heavier, more powerful and comfort-oriented sporttouring motorcycle.” The Interceptor has dual-stacked, frontmount radiators for a slimmer profile, radial-mount front brakes, and Pro-Arm swingarm. The adjustable seat height is a huge plus so different size riders have a custom fit. The deluxe model for 2015 has extra features we like on our machines; traction control, anti-lock brakes, self-cancelling turn signals, a center stand and heated grips. The looks of the Interceptor is a nice, sleeker change from the old Interceptor or Honda’s 1200 version. It comes with both a rear seat and a cowling depending on the look you want. You can also add some nice optional equipment like painted matching saddlebags and bar risers for more of an upright ride. The Interceptor comes with both a rear seat and a cowling for a sleeker look. The Interceptor‘s competitors can look and ride similar, but this machine seems to be lighter and more sporty looking and is definitely a motorcycle to consider if you are in the market for that complete sport touring motorcycle. 19th Annual Leesburg Bikefest Rocks By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

he Leesburg Bikefest is organized by the Leesburg Partnership along with Lake County, Progressive, Budweiser and Gator Harley-Davidson. Beautiful downtown Leesburg, Florida was the site of the 19th Annual Leesburg Bikefest. Billed as the largest three day motorcycle rally and music festival, it draws as many as 300,000 motorcycle riders with something for everyone to enjoy; over 300 vendors, motorcycle shows, tattoo contests, an LED night parade, a Hot Rod Show and so much more.

The crowd seems to get larger and larger each year and only one thing could explain it… the Leesburg Bikefest ROCKS! Top line entertainers keep the large crowds entertained and this year was no exception with the likes of Lita Ford, Puddle of Mud and the Marshall Tucker Band not to mention over 80 local concerts around the area. Another reason the crowds keep returning and growing is the Leesburg community. The town opens their arms and welcomes visitors from across the country and around the globe. “It really is a great feeling when someone who lives there tells you, thank you for coming and come back soon. It’s something we bikers don’t hear all the time”, said Jeff Nowles from Mississippi.

Having the event as a free admission event is just another reason to pack up the friends and family and come see how the town opens its arms for the motorcycle community. Hotels and restaurants were packed and it seemed everyone had a tremendous time. The coolest thing was a large map the Leesburg Partnership displays and they encouraged everyone to place a pin where they are from. A good sampling showed every state in the USA was represented as was every country in the western hemisphere and many from across the Atlantic Ocean. Joe Shipes, Leesburg Partnership executive director reminded us that folks don’t need a motorcycle to enjoy the free event, it’s open to everyone. Next year’s event will be in the planning stages after a brief break and it promises to keep the throttle at maximum twist to bring even more folks out to visit the 20th Annual Leesburg Bikefest. motorcycling is that there is no wrong road when you're enjoying the ride. Some of the most enjoyable roads I have ridden on were not planned.They may have been the result of a missed turn or re-routing due to weather, but resulted in a great experience. Motorcycling requires planning that is subject to change. The more fluid we are, the more we are able to enjoy the ride. And guess what? It's advice that works in everyday life.

Packing Pack smart - pack light. In the long run, you will be happier. Clothes can be washed. Items can be bought. I always do a first gathering of items and then whittle it down. I use a soap called Miracle Soap (you can find at health food stores).You can wash your hair, body and clothes with the same item. Break down other toiletries into absolutely necessary amounts. Rolling clothing allows for tighter packing and less wrinkles.

Using airtight packing bags can also help keep items tight and dry.

Enjoying the Ride I am all about bike fit and comfort. I love long distance riding. Anything can feel ok for 50-100 miles, but what about a 1,000 or 3,000 mile trip? There's a big difference. Sometimes a back rest, highway pegs, a better windshield, seat sculpting or other items can make a world of difference for a small amount of money. Also make sure you make time to have a good maintenance check-up before you go; mechanical or technical failures are no fun and can take the joy out of your trip. Sometimes things happen but prevent what you can and have a great summer of riding. One of our trips will be to Tennessee where we will get to visit the Gracy's.

London’s Iconic Ace Café Breaks Ground in the U.S. By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

n April 30th, in Orlando, Florida hundreds of cars and motorcycles roared their engines high to announce the arrival and ground breaking ceremony for London’s Iconic Ace Café. From the corner of West Livingston Street and Garland Avenue, a “Start Your Engines” British-style “Roar Up” started opening ceremony and ground breaking of Ace Cafe Orlando. Since 1938 the legendary Ace Café has been “The” place to be if you were into motorcycles, fast cars, rock & roll and have a passion to share your love of all those with like-minded people. Now those same type people will be able to come into the Orlando Ace Café and feel

the nostalgia from the old and combine it with the new with a little American twist. Ace Café will be located downtown within 3 acres and in three historic buildings. Inside Ace Cafe Orlando there will be a restaurant and bar, a cafe, an art gallery, retail shops and a live music stage. The menu will be American roadside diner concept with made-fromscratch home-style comfort food, with some British favorites like Bangers & Mash, Fish & Chips, and Scotch Eggs, but with a twist that captures the authentic spirit & flavors of some of the best back road joints and specialty fare.

“We haven’t had anything exactly like this ever. It’s been an event venue for nightclubs and now it will be the premiere car and motorcycle venue in the United States,” explained Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.

“We’re going to put about $7 million into this. We’re going to make probably about 250 jobs here in the downtown area, “said Steve Glum, the Chief Marketing Officer for Ace Cafe North America.

Healthier, stronger knees and thighs: A well-known orthopaedic surgeon in Indy once told me that motorcycle riders have fewer knee problems because riding a bike strengthens key muscles used to hold the patella and other bones in the knee in place. He told me that riding a motorcycle may reverse knee pain and problems and can most definitely prevent them. Most of the key muscles used to hold knee bones in place reside in the thigh. Ever notice that chicks that ride bikes have nice thighs? There’s a reason! Additionally, backing a bike into a parking spot, especially uphill, is basically like doing leg presses with a 600 pound weight. It works! . Improved core strength: Again, all of the activities involved in steering a bike, moving it at slow

resistance exercise not only burns calories but serves to strengthens those muscles, which ultimately increases your metabolism. Additionally, the physical effort exerted while turning, especially at higher speeds, can be significant. Folks who ride motocross or race motorcycles can burn up to 600 calories per hour; the rest of us burn around 200-300 calories per hour. Not bad! (Note to passengers: You burn zero calories per hour while riding passenger on a cruiser, and potentially up to 50 calories per hour while riding passenger on a sport bike. Maybe it’s time to consider getting your own bike!)

The bottom line is that riding a motorcycle is a form of low-impact exercise that improves muscle tone, can assist with weight loss, and has a multitude of health benefits. These health benefits include but are not limited to:

Increased insulin sensitivity: Because riding a motorcycle is a low-impact form of exercise, people who ride have improved insulin sensitivity for up to eight hours after a ride. Improved insulin sensitivity has a profound impact on weight loss, because insulin is a fat storage hormone. Having improved insulin sensitivity means your body will produce less insulin to counteract carbohydrates or to lower blood sugars, which means your body will be signaled to store less fat. The improved insulin sensitivity is also of great importance to anyone with Type 2 diabetes. (See my post, Diabetes and the Art of Motorcycle Riding for info on how riding a bike significantly lowers blood glucose levels.) . Calorie burning: Riding a bike burns calories. Period. Getting everything ready for a ride takes time and burns calories, but there’s more. Think about it … it requires effort while riding to maintain balance, shift, brake, control the clutch, battle headwinds, etc., and that’s AFTER you burn calories backing the bike out of the garage! Riding into a headwind burns a significant amount of calories as your body tenses muscles to fight the wind and stay on the bike. This constant

Improved neck strength: This one is limited to those riders who wear helmets and those who have taken the time to properly fit themselves to their bike with the correct handle bars, seat, foot pegs, etc. Riding a bike that doesn’t “fit” well can actually cause back pain and destroy proper alignment. Make sure your bike fits you! Wearing a helmet for a few hours a day would strengthen your neck whether you ride or not. Wearing it while riding, especially if you don’t have a windshield to shelter you from the wind, requires significant strength. I’m happy to say, much to my chiropractor’s chagrin, I was able to reverse whiplash simply by riding my bike and wearing a helmet. (I never ride without one.) (continued on page 22)

Mental outlook: Motorcycle riders usually report returning from a ride feeling energized and happy. Many riders refer to their motorcycle as their “therapist.” Riding a motorcycle has a wonderful way of releasing endorphins that serve to boost mood and improve outlook. The time spent on a bike also provides valuable sun exposure, known to increase Vitamin D levels which are known to be powerful mood enhancers. Additionally, the hours of alone

time spent on the back of a bike either allows folks to completely escape from their problems or allows them to work through problems and consider issues from different perspectives. I know more than one rider who hops on their bike and takes a ride when they have an issue needing consideration. (This does not, of course, apply to issues causing great distress.) That’s it! Riding a motorcycle has definite health advantages, both physical and emotional. As always, ride smart. Get thoroughly trained before starting to ride and then take time to practice on back roads before hitting main

thoroughfares. Take your time and don’t try to beat lights or get in front of slow drivers. As always, NEVER drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Kathy Casey-Nale woke up one morning only to find that daughter Jennifer and granddaughter Adrianna were missing. Never giving up the hope that they will be found, Kathy keeps a strong, positive drive and continues to bring awareness to their missing status with a motorcycle ride every year, The Chain of Hope Ride. The motorcycle ride this year attracted over 500 family, friends and supporters who help and encourage Kathy to continue her vigil and to keep the memory of Jennifer and Adrianna in everyone’s thoughts and prayers.

closure. “I would like to bring someone to justice and to put somebody behind bars. If that don’t happen, what means more to me is knowing where they’re at, what happened to them, putting them in my family’s cemetery and having a place to take them roses on their birthday.” There is $27,000 in reward money offered for information that leads to a conviction in the deaths of the Jennifer and Adrianna Wix, including $10,000 announced by Gov. Bill Haslam in February. Law Enforcement officials have never closed the case and vow to never give up the search. Sheriff Bill Holt stated in past, “I strongly believe that there are persons in this community who know what happened to Jennifer and Adrianna, but who have been reluctant to come forward for one reason or another. We today strongly encourage our citizens to help us provide answers and closure to the family, and, as circumstances warrant, justice to these two young persons who chose to live in our area.” Kathy, Jennifer and Adrianna are in Kristin and my prayers and we will continue this search and awareness with Kathy…until they are found.

If you ever get to visit the AMA Motorcycle Museum be sure to stop at Schmidt's Sausage Haus in nearby Columbus, OH. Schmidt's has been around since 1886 serving up traditional German favorites. The gang opted for sauerkraut-bratwurst balls @ $6.50 for starters. I tried the sausage sampler @ $12.75. Bratwurst, knockwurst and the Bahama Mama (hickory smoked pork, beef and hot spices) with red cabbage and vinegar potato salad. It was so good I wished I could have brought some home. The bull had wiener schnitzel (veal cutlet) with potato salad and sweet slaw @ $15.75. Little Wayne had the Bahama burger @ $9.00. It's a thick sliced patty, not a link, on a toasted pretzel bun, Swiss cheese, sweet kraut and potato pancakes. For dessert we all tried the 1/2 lb. vanilla cream puff. Recipe Ingredients:

1/4 cup white wine vinegar 3 Tbsp. water 2 pkg (9oz. each) refrigerated cheese tortellini, cooked, drained (2-1/2 cups) 2 cups sugar snap peas, halved 1 cup shredded carrots

Cooking Directions: Combine dressing mix, mayo, vinegar and water in large bowl. Add remaining ingredients; toss to coat. Cover. Refrigerate several hours or until chilled. (Save 50 calories and 6 grams of fat per serviing by preparing with Kraft Light Mayo Reduced Fat Mayonnaise).
