words from the publisher
Hey Folks!
As we finish the May issue, we are headed to Thunder Beach Rally in Panama City Beach, Florida. We are looking forward to taking a break from publishing and get in some saddle time with our friends. Before we go, we will polish up our bikes as they have accumulated some dirt and road grime over the past winter. We will do some general maintenance to make sure everything is in order. Don't forget to get your bike serviced at your local bike shop or if you are looking for a new shop, there are several listed here in this issue. Give them a call. Hope we see you there! We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful area that has seemingly endless miles of winding roads that lead us to the next destination with great friends. We hope you find some of those routes in our centerfold of this issue. There are so many routes on my bucket list. Hopefully one day soon we can ride the Blue Ridge Parkway, the number one route on my list. I have to say riding to Helen, GA is one of the most enjoyable rides I've been on. The scenery is breathtaking with all the lush green fields and farms. Wooded areas and waterfalls are other features you will see along the way. Field In The Woods is one place I've been wanting to stop in and check out along that route. It's a field that has the largest Ten Commandments. It's impressive. Once you get in the mountains, the roads turn to nice twisties and sweeping curves that make you eager for the next one. It's kind of like a roller coaster ride that you have control over. I like the little antique shops and little diners in the small towns along the way.

om Caldwell, a seasoned veteran of the Pro Gas class stated, “Saturday was a day to set records as, I have not seen conditions like these in a long time. The track conditions and the weather were all on the same page, which made for a record day…” Jim Doyle capped off the speed week with a record breaking 216.29 run on the ¼ mile track in Baton Rouge, but lost in the finals to Randal Andras in the Nitro Funny Bike class. Dungey & Webb Claim Supercross Titles By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
W
For more information go to: www.amasupercross.com.
ith only two events remaining, Ryan Dungey from Tallahassee, Florida has already won his second AMA Supercross 450 Championship. Cooper Webb of Newport, North Carolina claimed the AMA Supercross 250 West title, his first ever. During round 14 at Houston, Dungey, who races for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, finished second earning enough points to ensure he’ll end the season with the championship. Star Racing Yamaha’s Webb finished first in the 250SX West class to claim his title. “The 2015 season is another great year for AMA Supercross,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “Ryan and Cooper were stellar against the world’s best to confidently earn their AMA No. 1 plates. Congratulations on a great performance.” Dungey raced with great consistency earning seven wins so far this year and only missing the podium once. Webb won five victories this season after winning the Rookie of the Year last year. The 250 East Title is still up for grabs, but withstanding a serious incident, Marvin Musquin, Ryan Dungey’s Red Bull KTM teammate, should take the title by year’s end. The Las Vegas finally should be a good one. With the 450SX title decided, money will be a motivation for every racer including the champion. In the 250SX East will meet West to decide who the best in that class is.

Kyle Petty Charity Ride Announces 21st Anniversary Route
T
he Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America has announced the route for its 21st Anniversary motorcycle trek, taking place May 28, 2015. Former NASCAR driver Kyle Petty will lead 200 motorcyclists along the 2,500 mile route, stretching from Santa Cruz, Calif. to Branson, Mo., to raise funds and awareness for Victory Junction, a camp created to enrich the lives of children with chronic or life threatening illnesses.
“When Kyle started this Ride 21 years ago, I don’t think any of us realized just how special it would become,” said Kyle’s father Richard Petty. “Riding across our beautiful country on two wheels with great friends and family is incredible, but knowing you’re doing it to help others makes it the ride of a lifetime.”
“Each year, we select a route that’s full of breathtaking scenery, while also allowing us to spread the word and build excitement around our mission along the way,” said Petty. “Year after year, the Ride creates lasting memories for our riders, most importantly, it provides life changing opportunities for children at Victory Junction.” Spectators, visitors and locals along the 2015 route are encouraged to attend one of the Ride’s eight overnight stops or daily fuel stops to greet Petty and the riders, purchase Ride memorabilia or make a donation to Victory Junction.

A Dealer's Perspective
L
et's talk about service first. Finding a dealership or a service shop is important but that's like finding a good hospital. Once you get in a hospital, you want a doctor who knows you. When you find a good service tech, go back to them. You might find an oil change special somewhere or a set of vars you can get a little cheaper at another place, but in the long run, it's best to stick with your tech. They get to know you as a customer and will always go the extra mile for their faithful customers. It also doesn't hurt to tip a tech a little extra if they have gone way beyond the call of duty to get something done for you or fix a major problem. It always puts a smile on their face and lets them know, you are a very happy customer.
Kathy Tolleson CEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc.
People do it and we live with it but it's really not classy to bring in your own parts. It's like bringing your bacon and eggs to your diner. It wouldn't be tolerated there. We understand if it's some major custom very special order something, but we get our parts wholesale and you will usually get an overall better price on parts and installation than you would with just installation. You'll pay more for your installation and you probably will end up paying more for your part.
already been dropped, we might not have room to move on the price, but that's a great time to ask for helmets, gloves, jackets or other gear. They are usually paid for and much easier to throw into a deal when there's no wiggle room. You never want to beat the dealership up so bad that they aren't happy the next time they see you and you want them to make enough money to stay in business so they are there to take care of you for the long term.
Knocking inventory to try and get a better deal just irritates the sales team and manager. It's okay to point out a worn tire or a little rust on a used bike but if the sales person is good, they will already air any flaws and let you know that has already been taken into consideration when the bike was priced. It's much better to say, "This is how much I have to work with; is there any way you could take $15,500 for the bike?" Sometimes, if a bike has been floor planned for a while or the price has

The Dragon is a popular destination for motorcycle riders of every level from beginners to extreme riders. But there will always be those “Daredevils” or “It won’t happen to me” folks that overdo it past their own limitations. Be safe out there and ride aware of others that aren’t so safe.

Preacher Morgan Clough and his staff welcomed all the riders into the parking lot where music and lunch would soon begin. Everyone that came was blessed along with their bikes for the 2015 season. This was a free ride, a free lunch and free live entertainment. Shirt sales, donations from the riders and sponsors benefited the 2-Fish Ministry & the OAA Mobile Food Pantry. Afterwards a ride through the East Tennessee scenic countryside commenced ending at Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson. My motorcycle just returning from being repaired will be blessed at a later date by the Preach. Yep, more fried chicken is required.

Greg Darnell Honored By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy
Dane Westby Dies After Fatal Street Crash
icknamed the “Wolverine” by five-time Daytona 200 Champion Scott Russell during a performance at Daytona, Westby passed away Monday, March 23, 2015, at a young 28-years old from injuries sustained in a street crash. For this year’s Daytona 200 he rode a bicycle from his home in Oklahoma to Daytona International Speedway, and then drove the pace car for the race.

G
reg Darnell, 64, of Clinton, TN passed away before many of us could ever say goodbye. He was one of those folks you could say was a true friend. He pulled no punches with his words, but he always would be there to help anyone with anything they needed. Greg served our country as a Sergeant for two tours of duty during the Vietnam War with the U.S. Air Force from 1968-1975. He then served his local community as an officer in the Clinton Police Dept until 1983 where he was also active in the Fire Dept. He became a 20 year employee of Boeing as a Fire Protection Engineer, and as Codes
Enforcement Officer and Building Commissioner for Anderson County. While being a member with the TN2 Red Knights, one of his greatest achievements was being one of the original organizers of the yearly 9/11 Remembrance Ride honoring and remembering the sacrifice of emergency personnel who lost their lives on 9/11. The Flag was flown at half mast, a 21 gun salute, taps was played and Sally, his wife, was presented with an American Flag in honor of Greg’s service to our country. I don’t think the tears have stopped flowing yet. Many people joined as we said our farewells and rode with him on his last ride here on earth. God Speed Greg, for we shall meet again, my friend.
The sideburns-wearing Westby was loved by fans for his exciting style on the racetrack, and his attitude off the bike. America has lost another motorcycle roadracing hero.

ust a couple weeks ago, my family and I were driving through Tennessee following a spring break trip to the Pigeon Forge area when we saw a group of bikes traveling down I-75, many of which were towing trailers behind their motorcycles. This sparked a discussion regarding the safety, and George Stein legality of motorcycle trailers. First, as most of you are aware, it is perfectly legal for a motorcycle to tow a trailer. Yet, each state is going to have different laws with respect to how, or if, you are required to register or title a trailer. For example, in Georgia, trailers that weigh 2,000 pounds or less are required to Brian Caron be registered with the State of Georgia, but do not require a title. If the trailer weighs over 2,001 pounds, and was made after 1986, you would be required to title the trailer in addition to the registration. This leads us to the questions regarding safety. Towing a trailer behind a bike can be dangerous, especially if proper safety measures aren't taken by an individual prior to hitting the road. These include making sure you have a properly installed hitch and a trailer with a proper axle width and tongue length for your motorcycle. Yet, even while taking precautions, when looking at authorities in the motorcycle safety community, the majority of experts do not recommend towing a trailer. In particular, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation strongly discourages the practice. They state that towing a trailer can cause tire overload, reduced braking due to the excess weight and create problems with stability and handling. Tire blowouts due to the change in weight and weaving of the trailer can cause a bike to go down at high rates of speed, especially on an interstate. Lastly, and maybe less important, towing a trailer will lower your gas mileage on your bike considerably. If you are going to use a trailer, you also need to think about insurance on the trailer itself, just in case it gets damaged. Whether or not your trailer is covered is going to usually be policy specific. You may have coverage on the trailer if you have additional accessory coverage, but this would not cover any loss if the trailer was not hitched to the bike. If any damage occurred if the trailer left the bike, or if it was stolen after or before you arrived at your destination, this would necessitate getting a separate policy for the trailer. So if you own a trailer, or are considering purchasing a trailer, make sure you speak to your agent and understand if the trailer is covered under your policy. So the consensus is, if you are going to tow a trailer, please be careful and take extra precautions to ensure your safety. Make sure the tires on your bike, as well as the tires on your trailer, are in good shape, and can handle the excess stress. If you have any questions or concerns about towing a trailer, insurance or any safety issue, Steelhorse Law is always happy to speak to our friends in the community.
