Hey Folks,

September is here and the leaves will be changing soon and cooler weather on its heels...my favorite time of the year, well maybe spring time too. As we put this issue together and worked on upcoming events to include in the magazine, we noticed nearly every event is centered around a benefit or charity. This tells me several things: 1. The motorcycle community sure comes together to support those less fortunate or on hard times. 2. The non-motorcycle community looks to the motorcycle community to fund their charities and targets them to raise money, more than any other group that I know of. Motorcyclists love to get together and are such a friendly crowd. We never meet a stranger in the motorcycle world; they are just friends we haven't met yet, as we often say. That is what makes this crowd grow because people want to be a part of that circle, understandably. That's what drew me into the world. I only have one word of caution for the motorcycle world: Make sure the charity you give your hard-earned money to is really donating your contribution to legitimate organizations or families who are in need and giving the percentage that they say they contribute. I'll leave it at that. How many of you yearn for simpler times? We certainly do, that's why my husband and I purchased a mini-farm this year.. We are growing our own vegetables, fruit trees, and chicken eggs to start with. We want to know what goes into our food and into our body. We like taking roads less traveled and visiting places where time appears to have stood still, and times were less complicated. We enjoy going to old fashioned drug stores and diners and meeting friendly town people. There are so many of those places to check out; we hope you get out to visit them too and take a road less traveled.

2015 Harley-Davidson Road Glide Special By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

he 74th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally played host to several new motorcycles. One was Harley-Davidson’s new Road Glide. After being absent for a year, HarleyDavidson revamped the Road Glide and added some quite new features.

To thrust its 845 pound weight (plus the rider), the Project Rushmore Road Glide Special carries the high-output Twin Cam 103 engine, that when the throttle is twisted, leaves little doubt of its torque and speed potential no matter what else you put in the saddlebags. It’s touted to have a 42mpg to boot. The newly designed fairing is another plus for the ride. It features a triple splitstream vent that opens and closes to equalize pressure in front and behind the windscreen which reduces head buffeting those prior fairings had. The new handlebar design

allows the rider to lean back more than before and enjoy the ride like never before. A big plus I see is the larger, premium Boom! Box 6.5GT infotainment system with touch screen and GPS

Herbert & Amber Clark followed up their inaugural Boogie Hollar with performances by Skinny Molly, Aunt Betty, Night Train, the Talkin’ Sticks, the Evil Twin Band and the hilarious antics of ventriloquist Crystal Birdwell.

Mother Nature came calling for two days and even Amber broke out the floaties, but nothing stopped the rally folks from soaking up some liquid sunshine and kickin’ it with everything Herbert & Amber had planned. couple of the Southern Biker Road Crew and several our friends checked off an item from their bucket list. Take some friends that have never gone or just take the plunge and see all that the South Dakota motorcycle rally had to offer. One thing is for sure, this year seemed to be just what the motorcycle doctor prescribed.

Harley launched their new 2015 Road Glide Special with several up-grades, Indian debut their new 2015 Scout, several new businesses opened up and by the estimated attendance numbers, it was one of the better ones since years past.

Between the Buffalo Chips, Broken Spoke Saloon, Full Throttle Saloon, the Iron Horse Campground, the Spur and many more, vendors were present by the hundreds, musical acts were top notch and the event goers never stopped pouring in to enjoy everything. In 1938 J.C. “Pappy” Hoel of the Jackpine Gypsies hosted a dirt track race with nine riders that set a course in Sturgis history as the first Black Hills Classic was held. Years went by and more and more motorcycle enthusiasts made Sturgis a destination in early August. The rest, as they say, is history. In 2000, the rally saw its highest attendance as over 600,000 people attended the event. Next year marks the rally’s 75th Anniversary and from all indications that I’m hearing, they are revving it up to be their loudest and largest rally ever. We are headed up! Make your reservations early, plan your ride and ride your plan.

t’s that time of year again when it seems that everywhere we look there are motorcycles. You know the story. There’s the person who bought a bike “just to ride back and forth to work to save on gas.” Pretty soon, you’ll notice them “going to work” at the oddest times and on the most remote roads. Hmmmmm … As much fun as riding solo can be, there’s a whole different dynamic when a group gets together to ride. All of a sudden riding isn’t just about sharing the road with cars, trucks, bicyclists and the stray turtle, but about a group – a unit – with a common destination but greatly differing riding styles, experience and ideas of safe riding. What a great time to make friends and memories. I’ve put together a few thoughts gleaned over the years from riding in groups. Feel free to take from them and adapt them to your own situation. First of all, check your bike for roadworthiness before arriving at the departure point: full gas tanks, tires properly inflated and with good tread, all lights and brakes working, mechanical problems identified and fixed. It isn’t much fun when you get hit in the shin (or worse) by a footpeg that’s vibrated loose and taken flight

from a bike ahead of you. Getting stuck in the middle of a ride because you “knew” you had enough gas is an inconvenience, not only for you but for your fellow riders (yes, Randy, I do remember that day). Get to your departure point at least 15 minutes prior to the planned start time. This will give you time to chat with friends (or make new ones), get the route from the ride leader, find out if the group will be riding staggered (probably the best choice for most group rides), side-by-side or single file, and gather any other information a diverse group of riders need in common (hand signals, speed expectations, etc.). Don’t forget that all-important last-minute stop in the restroom. You’ll be so glad you did that. Now that you’ve taken care of the preliminaries and you’re on the road enjoying a beautiful ride, you’ll have other things to keep in mind. The group is a unit, but the unit is made up of individual bikes, each being ridden by a different person. While it’s important to follow the leader (on a divided highway, continue to follow the leader instead of spreading out all over the lanes – that only causes confusion and increases the possibility of a mishap). I always tell people who want to ride in a group that they must

never forget to ride their own ride. If the bike(s) ahead of you make a traffic decision that was safe for them but unsafe for you, remember that things look differently from different parts of the group. Don’t fuss and cuss them. Let them go on and wait for traffic to clear so that you (and whoever is behind you) can continue safely. From leading many groups I can tell you that when you’re at or near the front it’s very difficult to make distance judgments for people riding in various places behind you. At the same time, stay close enough to the bike(s) ahead of you that cars won’t be so likely to try to split the group. A tight pack doesn’t mean you have to be breathing down each other’s necks – but that you understand the need to maintain a fairly standard following distance through the group, one that will communicate to car and truck drivers (and stray turtles) that you’re all part of a single group. If the group should become separated, each rider should know the route and destination so there’s no need to panic. Cell phones are wonderful, capiche? Last, enjoy being on two wheels, enjoy the people you’re with (even if they’re not doing what you think they should) and enjoy the beauty of this world. Have fun – that’s what it’s all about. Honda’s CTX1300 Deluxe Review By the Mag Man, Randy Gracy

could dish out. Winding through curves and mountains, there was no hesitation because I had a need for speed. All the power I could use was at my wrist’s command and there was plenty of reserve left too. I jumped from 25mph to 75mph in a heartbeat and realized, “Oh, I may need to shift.” The motor has dual counterbalancers that do great to reduce any engine vibrations. The traction control came in quiet handy on the ride as well on those dirty, back roads.

onda is nudging into the bagger market and beginning to reinvent themselves as they enter into different classes of motorcycles. The new Honda CTX1300 Deluxe bagger came in just in time to don my helmet and do some saddle time across the scenic roads, mountains and hot spots of Georgia and Tennessee. Right off the bat, there was the noticeable appearance of a 1261cc V4 proven engine from Honda’s ST1300. But that’s where the similarities end. What did I immediately like? The wide

handlebars, the Bluetooth compatible stereo system with IPod connections for a thumping sound, and a wraparound fairing for an aerodynamic style were the first things that came to mind, just to name a few. On the ride, I loved the nimbleness, torque, suspension and cornering that are usually reserved for sport bikes. Sitting upright and the pegs more near a forward/neutral position, the bike was obviously engineered for a more long distance riding which was a nice surprise. With a 29 inch seat height (just my size) and a rev limiter that’s 500 RPMs higher than the redline (7,000 RPM), it was time to twist the throttle and see what this machine

The 200mm wide rear tire handled as well as a narrower tire and never came into play as you might think on that wide of a tire. I leaned thru the curves as if it had a smaller tire, waiting for a scrape (that never happened). The ABS on this model was quite a nice feature to have and also came in quite handy during the ride. Taking a tid-bit from their research, the self canceling turn signals were a nice addition. The bags are large enough for the things you might need and comes with an optional tour pack for the long haul trips. All in all, this was a great and enjoyable experience to ride a new bagger model that Honda has introduced. It is sure to appeal to many types of motorcycle enthusiasts, the young and the young at heart. The new CTX1300 is kind of a cross between a bagger and a sport tourer with all the luxuries and reliability you expect from Honda. They’ve put some extra thought into their new lines and they are coming up with winners. Go try one out for yourself; you might come home with a new pony for your stables.

2014 Kentucky Bike Rally By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

ittle Sturgis, Kentucky is reborn and the rally that would be huge is turning out to be just that. Record crowds came to take part in the state of Kentucky’s biggest motorcycle rally. Jackyl headlined a huge list of entertainment including Big Engine, Naked Karate Girls, Hired Guns, the Jeff Vaughn Band, Geneva and many more! Vendors were at an all time high which was a welcomed site to all the rally goers. Several food vendors came close to running out of everything, which is a good thing if you’re a vendor. Contests had record number of contestants and the bike show was top notch. Even the dirt drags were awsome. The rally is only once a year, but it’s becoming one of the go to rallies of the year. Biker Bob from USA Biker Parties said, “Do not miss next year’s show (July 16-19) because I’m sure it will be off the wall!

2014 Lucas Oil Motocross Championship, a Two-Man Race

he 2014 Lucas Oil Motocross Championship is coming down to the wire. The Red Bull KTM duo of Ken Roczen and Ryan Dungey have established themselves as the contenders and are battling it out for American motocross supremacy. It is the classic showdown of rookie versus veteran with only a few rounds remaining. The series moved to New Berlin, New York and the fans witnessed Ryan Dungey gaining momentum in the championship. With a classic holeshot, Dungey ran away with moto 1 convincingly. Playing spoilers in the championship are Geico Honda’s Eli Tomac and Muscle Milk Honda’s Trey Canard. Both riders found their way in between the KTM duo allowing Dungey to maximize the damage to Roczen’s lead. Dungey won the overall with a 1-2 performance and with only two rounds to go, Roczen’s lead had shrunk to 7 points.

New to the 2014 schedule was Ironman MX in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Unfamiliar track and soil would add parity to the series, and Mother Nature would be the ultimate challenge for the riders. The first mud race of the championship saw Ken Roczen dominate the field and open up his lead back on Dungey. Bad starts and mistakes cost Dungey 13 more points with only 1 round remaining. Star Racing’s Jeremy Martin showed the most consistency and speed all year to clinch the 250 championship. Martin held the red plate from the very beginning and never relinquished his points lead. Yamaha has not won a 250 title since Jeff Emig in 1994. Martin was also nominated as Team USA’s 250 rider for the Motocross of Nations to be held in Latvia on September 28th. Eli Tomac and Ryan Dungey will join him in the quest to bring home the Chamberlain trophy once again to United States.

never stopped. When you needed a rest, vendor row at the Putnam County Fairgrounds was available for all kinds of things to buy, events and contests to watch or participate in and of course a great place to meet new friends.

ith the onset of summer, the 2014 Tennessee State Hog Rally came roaring into Middle Tennessee. Headliner act Montgomery Gentry lead a top lineup for the riders that came to enjoy everything the 2014 Tennessee HOG Rally had to offer. With 2,500 plus riders took part in one the best H.O.G. State Rallies that a H.O.G. bunch has ever put together. What is it that attracts so many visitors to this place? It could be the curvy, mountainous roads, the unparalleled scenery, the great entertainment but it must be undoubtedly the most inviting town for motorcycles in all of Tennessee…Cookeville, (officially known as “The Heart of Tennessee”).

H.O.G. members came from all over the country and enjoyed down home Tennessee hospitality. Rides to many different places included a visit to the famous Brushy Mountain Prison, the Middle Tennessee Drag Strip where many members drag raced against each other to the She Ride lead by Betsy Boswell herself for women only (some men were welcome, too). Any way you see it, when held in Cookeville, this rally attracts more and more riders. Next year’s event is slated for Cookeville again (May 26-30) and a little birdie told me, expect the best headliners ever, the largest attendance ever and the city and residents of Cookeville with open arms.

New Lease on Life With The aid of My Motorcycle By Teresa Gray

am a biker now and loving every minute of it! I suffered a broken neck at the hands of someone who wanted to hurt me. I finally gathered my strength and returned home to Mississippi to start over. I met a man who rides for Combat Vets. I told him that one day I would like to have my own bike and learn to ride. Well I did it! I have been riding about 10 months. I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t imagine not riding now. How did I ever survive? My bike has given me freedom and courage to live again. I am a photographer and I love to take off on my bike with my camera. Man what a life! Just thought I would share my story in case there are others who need to find that thing that has been missing! Thank you for the opportunity to encourage others who may be at the end of their rope. I have suffered through so much pain at the hands of someone who nearly broke me and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean financially. If you had met me a year ago, you would completely understand my journey. I have been transformed inside as well as outside; losing excess weight helped me feel

better about myself too. As I said before, my bike has given me so much. It has more healing power than one could ever know. I really hope that my words and actions on my way to healing will inspire another to move forward and step out of the darkness into the light of a new life. The man I met that rides with Combat vets asked me to marry him recently. He has been a constant supporter and my best friend since we met last year. In 2009, the love of my life took his life and in effect put me in the path of the man who tried to destroy me. I never thought I could love or trust again. Here I am now, riding free and feeling loved. Many people in the motorcycle community have added to my most blessed journey, a feeling of kindness and understanding and I thank them for it. My spirits are lifted even higher with the opportunity to share my story with others. P.S. I already sold my first bike and bought my dream bike, a 1995 Anniversary edition Fatboy! Happy Trails!

Ham & Asparagus Strata Recipe Ingredients: 1 lb loaf of firm textured sliced white bread 8 oz shredded cheddar cheese 2 oz deli sliced ham, cut into 1/2" strips 12 spears asparagus, blanched or cooked 4 eggs 1 cup milk 1 cup half 'n half 1/4 cup fresh tarragon, chopped 1 tsp dry mustard 1/2 tsp salt 1/4 tsp pepper Cooking Directions: Butter pie plate. Cut bread slices with flower shaped cookie cutter. Line pie plate with bread cut-outs. Top with 1 1/2 cups cheese, ham & asparagus. Whisk together remaining ingredients. Pour egg mixture over all. Top with remaining cheese. Let stand overnight in refrigerator. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes until puffed and golden brown. 6-8 servings.
