PREVIEW: Round 8 NBL1 – WOMEN

SOUTHERN SABRES v BALLARAT RUSH

A

lthough we didn’t come away with the chocolates last weekend, as a team we felt like we played some very good basketball. We pushed Ringwood hard and but for a poor start to the third quarter, could have come away with an important win on the road against a solid Ringwood team. Ella Batish was huge with 16 points, hitting two 3 pointers and was extremely efficient around the basket. We also got really valuable production out of Tenaya Phillips and Rachel Jarry. Rachel’s output has been fantastic all season – she is really leading from the front. On Sunday against Eltham we ran out of legs in the last quarter and had no real answer for Chelsie Schweers. She was devastating with 41 points for the visitors. Despite the loss, we again showed progress especially on offence. We are really missing the leadership and poise of Amelia Todhunter at the moment. We are hoping to get her back as soon as we can so she can bolster our backcourt.

Rachel Jarry continued her great season with a combined 32 points, 16 rebounds across last weekend.

This Sunday we take on Ballarat whose record is similar to ours. Provided we continue to improve we are a big chance in this game. We need to have a good week on the track at training and stay positive and connected. We also need a big crowd to come out and help us on Sunday afternoon at the Sabredome! We thank you for your ongoing loud and vocal support – the crowds have been great so far this season, so please get down and support your Sabres NBL1 women. ANDREW POTTER – Head Coach

Ella Batish had a great game v Ringwood last week with 16 points (pictured here v Eltham)

SABRES DOUBLE HEADER – NBL1 Sunday 26th May 2019 7

Sabres NEWS May 21, 2019 – www.southernbasketball.com.au

NBL1 SABRES IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY On Saturday May 18th, a BBQ fun day was held at the Dunkley Fox Housing Estate in Highett. Two senior Sabres NBL1 players – from the men Sam McDaniel and from the women Amelia Todhunter – attended on behalf of the Southern Basketball Association and conducted a one hour basketball clinic for the local children who came out. Amelia and Sam put the children through some skills and drills and gave them a taste of what playing organised basketball is like. The SBA also donated 12 basketballs to the Housing Estate. Hosted by Team Sports 4 All, the objective of the BBQ was to engage with local children and get them involved in sport, and then signed up to Team Sports 4 All. Team Sports 4 All offer assistance to families who are unable to afford team sport due to financial or social reasons. Organiser Fiona Gathercole was grateful for the player appearance. “On behalf of Team Sports 4 All I would like to thank SBA for allowing Amelia and Sam to come along to the Dunkley Fox Estate on Saturday and teaching the kids some new basketball skills. The aim of the day was to get the kids out into the fresh air and be active doing something fun and new. Sam and Amelia ran some fantastic games which all of the kids loved and each child walked away happy with a new basketball to enable them to continue practicing their newly learned basketball skills.” For more information on Team Sports 4 All and the work they do in local communities, please check out their webpage www.teamsports4all.com.au/

PREVIEW: Round 8 NBL1 – MEN

SOUTHERN SABRES v BALLARAT MINERS

W

hat a couple of weeks it’s been for the Sabre Men, underlined by a cavalcade of injuries to stars David Barlow, Rhys Carter, Sam McDaniel, and Jamie Batish (who join James Cigognini on the injury roster). It’s been a time of reflection, outside the box thinking, and strong determination from those left on the squad eager to prove themselves. On a positive note, the Sabres were joined by their latest addition Ryan Beisty who comes to the team from Newcastle, NSW, via Regis University (Colorado, USA). Ryan is a high character, high IQ athlete, who shoots the three-ball at a high clip and is a solid rebounder at his position. His attitude, work ethic and skill set are sorely needed, and Ryan is already bleeding Orange. This afternoon, we welcome league leading Ballarat Miners. This matchup sees a number of narratives that make this particular game an important one on the calendar. Personally, I spent the last three-plus years in Ballarat rebuilding that program as the Manager-Athlete & Coach Development, plus bringing their SEABL team back to its first finals appearances in over 11 years, so it was an important chapter in my career, and I will always have a soft spot for the Ballarat community. Brendan Joyce returns to the Sabre dome (as the Miners Head Coach) since his departure, and we know he’ll be keen to prove his team is a championship contender. Also, former Sabres import Jerry Evans Jr. returns to his former club eager for success. We hope another last on the ladder versus first on the ladder match up ends up orange. Last round the group faced its third double header of the season, in two tough games versus league newcomers Ringwood and Eltham. On Saturday night, the Sabres had a poor start and spent the rest of the game trying to dig themselves out of a hole. Never being able to break the 11-point barrier, the score blew out in garbage time and the group ended up with a loss. Sunday saw a different group come out, the Sabres came together, kept pace in the game and importantly worked hard to keep a huge/athletic Eltham team off the o-boards. But after building a 12 point lead in the first half, conditioning, shot selection, injuries and foul outs, saw the Sabres finish the game with only five active players and taking another heart-breaking defeat.

Unfortunately, that weekend cost us Dave Barlow (calf), Rhys Carter (ankle), and Jamie Batish (hamstring), all will spend the next 4-6 weeks on the sideline recovering. The positive being there is more opportunity for Sabres juniors like Kingsley Box, Kobe Davies, Nic Gabsch, Zak Pantelis, Tom O’Brien, Cal McNamara (and hopefully some VYCM talent), to show what theyre capable of as they strive for a career in the sport. Ballarat comes off their first loss of the season to the CoE last week, and they’ll be using one of the deepest, biggest, athletic, talented rosters in the league to try and make a mend. Their 7-1 record is a representation of the level of elite play the Miners are exhibiting this year, so the Sabres energy, execution (particularly of their unique style of play), and determination will be needed more so this week with such a daunting task ahead. Our young second stringers are ready to fight! Important reminder from all of the staff and athletes; thank you! Without you the fans, we can’t do this. The atmosphere this season has been fantastic, we hope that continues! NATHAN COOPER-BROWN – Head Coach Kinsley Box has stepped up to the challenge with increased minutes in the last few weeks (16 points, 5 rebounds v Eltham).
