Andrew Potter – NBL1 Women’s Assistant Coach standing in as Head Coach today as Jacqui O’Neill is away with the U16 Vic State Team.

PREVIEW: Round 11 NBL1 – WOMEN Saturday July 2nd v Geelong (lost 72-87)

T

oday we acknowledge and celebrate NAIDOC Week. This week’s game against Mt Gambier is another big challenge for our group. Like Geelong last week, Mt Gambier are another top team we need to overcome to get to where we want to go. Mt Gambier have been very consistent, especially at home, with great contributions from their top six at the offensive

end. Just as important has been the Pioneer’s defence that has limited the scoring of their opponents. We will need to have great contributions from all that hit the court, with our starters being backed up by a bench that is also in the game. We are desperate for a win, and after a great week of training we are ready! Andrew Potter – NBL1 Women’s Assistant Coach

David Barlow – NBL1 Men’s Head Coach

PREVIEW: Round 11 NBL1 – MEN Saturday July 2nd v Geelong (won 93-81)

W

elcome to the Sabredome for our game against the number 1 team in the competition, the Mt Gambier Pioneers, who have been the standout team all season and who are going to be tough to beat today. We are coming off a big win last weekend against a talented Geelong team and we’re looking to continue building on our current form as we approach the last third of the season. Unfortunately we are without Tohi Smith-Milner and David Okwera today as they have been named in the NZ &

Australian teams respectively for the upcoming Asia Cup. Although it hurts to not have them with us, I’m proud of them and know that they will come back to us having gained invaluable experience playing at an international level. Without our two starting bigs, everyone is going to have to step up and do a little bit more in order for us to get over the line tonight and that includes YOU! We need to hear your encouragement more than ever today so make sure you bring your voice. See you out there. David Barlow – NBL1 Men’s Head Coach

elcome to the Sabredome for the last home game of the regular season for the VYC Women. Coming off two massive wins last weekend with a combined winning margin of 61 points against Ballarat and Sunbury, the team will be looking to get another win this weekend with a spot in the finals still mathematically possible. Winning five out of our last six games, today’s game against Kilsyth is going to be a great test of the team’s

improvement over the second half of the season. Kilsyth are sitting firmly in finals positioning in the other conference. Today the team will be looking to continue their aggressive style defence – and ball movement on the offensive end – that lead to 76 and 94 point games last weekend. Lastly, the team would like to thank everyone who has supported us throughout the season. Your support especially during home games this season has been amazing and hopefully with your help today once again we can get one win closer to a finals berth. Cal Charge – VYC Women’s Coach

DOUBLE HEADER – VYC Sunday 7thJuly July2022 2019 11 5 SABRES TRIPLE HEADER – SABRES NBL1 double header & VYCW SUNDAY 10th

Our Sabres First Nations uniforms were designed by Merindah-Gunya Here is the story behind the design. The big dark blue meeting place represents the club’s home/stadium and there are 12 people around it to represent the squad of players. The surrounding smaller meeting places represent the other locations the squad go to play. There are animal tracks through the painting to represent the connection to the Bunurong land which is known for being so close to the Bay. The two journey lines up the top represent the men’s and women’s teams and their journey over time. The surrounding symbols represent the families, supporters and community members that make the club what it is today.

Bayley Mifsud is a proud Kirrae and Peek Wurrong woman of the Gunditjmara nation. Her Aboriginal and Art name is Merindah-Gunya meaning ‘Beautiful Spirit’ in Peek Wurrong language, gifted to her through ceremony by her parents and Elders. Practicing and sharing her culture through art is very special to her.
