PREVIEW: Round 10 NBL1 – WOMEN Saturday June 25th v Waverley (lost 80-89)

elcome back to the Sabredome. Last weekend was disappointing for the NBL1 Women. We didn’t produce our best consistently enough and played catch up for majority of the game against Waverley. On a positive note Britt Smart had a great game with 40 points, shooting the lights out. This weekend we look forward to rectifying our efforts and playing hard against Geelong. Geelong have Sara Blicavs – a current Australian Opals squad member and we will need to shut her down early. She is having a great season.

In exciting news we have Maya Dear and Katie Ritchie joining our other young player Amy Kurkowski in the line up. As we move into the second half of the season we are looking to ramp up our efforts on rebounds and second chance points. Thank you to everyone for coming and cheering! Go Sabres! PREVIEW: Round 10 NBL1 – MEN Saturday June 25th v Waverley (won 102-94)

C

oming off a good win last week against Waverley, we’re up against another top 3 team in Geelong. Despite some absences due to injury and national team commitments, they are still loaded with talent and we’re in for a tough battle tonight. We have had a disrupted week with Shea Ili, Dion Prewster, Tohi Smith-Milner and David Okwera all away with their respective national teams. We missed them at practice but we are incredibly proud of them for

their achievements and we consider ourselves lucky to have international calibre players at our club. The example they set and their knowledge and skill provides an invaluable example that our club as a whole benefits from. Despite this disruption, we’ve prepared as best we can and are ready to go tonight. We hope you enjoy some high quality basketball, right here in our community!!! Go Sabres! JUNE/JULY SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAM

T

he first week of the June/July School Holiday Program came to an end on Friday with the ever popular ‘Hot Shot’ shooting competition (below). The kids love cheering on their friends in the final each day, as they try to beat the score posted by the finalists that have had their turn before them. The week has been busy with over 600 bookings across three venues – Southern Basketball Centre (over 400), Mentone Grammar School and Mentone Girls’ Secondary College. It’s so good to have the holiday program in full swing post Lockdown, and next week we’ll be doing it all again! Thank you to everyone who joined in the fun and to all of our coaches (Sabres rep players) working on their school and uni holidays to make each day fun for the kids in attendance! PREVIEW: Round 14 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship MEN Saturday June 25th v Bulleen (won 83-80)

S

itting at 9-9, the Youth League Men’s group played a hungry Bulleen squad last week and narrowly came up with the win by 3 points. A slow start coupled with some hot Bulleen shooting would see our men down at the major break – Bailey Clarkson and Ryan Heath both providing some timely buckets to keep us afloat and still within arms reach. To the groups’ credit, they stayed the course and worked tirelessly

to trim the lead to a 1 possession game leading into the last quarter. Mamuch Chuol proved critical in hounding the opposition guards coupled with some solid defensive passages of play, whilst two big 3s by Campbell Blogg and Kobe Davies ensured that the Sabres finally came up with the win. This weekend, the VYC Men will play host to the Kilsyth Cobras – both teams hoping to propel their finals chances with an interconference win. Having gone 0-3 against Kilsyth in the last two seasons, the men are keen and eager to peg

SABRES v COBRAS 12.30pm – SUNDAY 3rd July 2022 one back on the ledger. Kilsyth boast a bevy of perimeter firepower with multiple players able to light it up in an instant. The Sabres defense will need to be extremely diligent and aware to stifle their shot-making. Simultaneously, the last time these two teams met was a game filled with turnovers and decisions leading to poor shot quality by the Sabres. The staff and players are hopeful that will see an improvement in this regard which should hold the men in good stead. Go Sabres! Andy Lim – VYC Men’s Head Coach

elcome back to the Sabredome for this Sunday’s game v Sunbury! This weekend the Sabres Youth League Women have a tough double header that involves a trip to Ballarat on Saturday as well as today’s home game against Sunbury. It will be a good test once again for the team this weekend to show how much they’ve improved since the last game against Ballarat back in Round 3, which resulted in a close Sabres win.

Coming off a loss last weekend to conference opponents Melbourne Tigers, the girls will be looking to rebound with a strong performance this weekend by improving on their zone offense and their defensive communication. With only five games left in the season the team will be pushing hard to climb the league standings with multiple teams, including Ballarat only one win ahead of us. Go Sabres! Cal Charge – Coach
