r a e D Paul The Southern Basketball Association (SBA) community wishes to pass on it’s deepest sympathies to the Dear family for the recent passing of their beloved husband and father, Paul. Paul served as a SBA Board member from 2017 to 2019. His children Maya (VYC Women) and Calsher (Under 18.1 Boys) are currently involved in the Sabres program. Nate Dear played for the Sabres up until Under 18s. Our thoughts are with Paul’s wife Cherie and his children Harry, Nate, Maya and Calsher at this very sad time. SBA Community

L
ast weekend was tough – trying to overcome multiple injuries and illness presented some challenges, however we put up a good fight in Bendigo. Funda Nakkasouglu had a great game with 22 points and Chloe Hicks and Cass Hill also had stand-out games in their seasons. This weekend we look forward to playing hard against Casey and Ringwood. Casey have added Australian Opal Abby Bishop and WNBL star Steph Blicavs since last playing us – a game we were in control of the entire time
and finished winners by 12 points. Shutting down Sarah Booth will be key to winning this week’s game and ensuring that we do not allow them to have a big inside presence. On Sunday we play Ringwood. Ringwood and Casey met last weekend and Ringwood got the win by 3 points. As we move towards the end of the season, I would like to thank everyone that helps to organise our home game day operations. e are happy to be back home tonight after a rough game on the road in Bendigo last weekend. Tonight we play Casey in the first game of an ultra-important double header, with the second game on Sunday away at Ringwood. We’re still without Tohi Smith-Milner and David Okwera who remain with their national teams at the FIBA Asia Cup and we have also lost Tom Wright who was selected to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games in the 3x3
competition. We are going to miss Tom but offer him nothing but our best wishes for his experience representing Australia! We are fortunate to have international calibre players at our club and their absence at times is a price we have to live with. Those of us that remain have a great opportunity to step up and play a larger role in (hopefully) two big wins this weekend!
