Welcome back! It’s great to be able to finally say those words after the year we had with basketball in 2020. I am looking forward to seeing our junior players rise to the challenge and take to the court in 2021 representing our Senior Sabres program. With the season openers being played this weekend it would be great to see as many spectators as possible to come down to the stadium and support our talented young teams. Michael and Andy have done a tremendous amount of work on and off court with their assistant coaches to bring together teams that we can all be very proud of. Several junior Sabres are getting their first opportunity in the senior program, and I would like to congratulate them on their efforts.
I would like to also take this time to thank the SBA Board, staff, coaches, and all of our volunteers who have helped the SBA get through 2020. Our 2021 Domestic competition has started as well as the VJBL, now it’s the turn of our VYC teams, with the NBL1 men and women scheduled to tip-off in April: a great time to be a member of the Southern Basketball Association

The playing group itself has been great to work with. You’ll see some familiar faces from previous VYCM seasons past, some new faces, and some faces which will bump across, up and down, from NBL1/U21s/U18s groups which reinforces and highlights the depth of talent we have throughout the seniors program. The whole coaching staff have been thrilled with the players’ commitment to improve daily and stretch themselves each session. Practices have been fierce and challenging; and we hope that the
competitive environment that we have created will place us in good stead for the season ahead. We kick things off this year with a double header; our first game being AWAY vs Kilsyth – 7.30pm Saturday followed up with HOME vs Blackburn 3.00pm Sunday. We are appreciative of any support from the home crowd we can get. Come down and enjoy the game at the Sabredome – the VYCM are chomping at the bit to play in front of the Sabres community! We are fielding a pretty inexperienced Youth League unit this year. We have a small number of returning players in Emma Crees, Mia Cigognini, Abby Riggs and Charlotte Ryan. We also welcome the return of some juniors from the club in Sally Burke, Ashley Smirniotis, Lola Allen and Jasmine Grollo. We will have access to some players from the NBL1 team including Felicity Hilford and Lucy Burke. And finally, we will be introducing a number of current Under 21 and Under 18 players to Senior basketball.
Training sessions have been intense as members of the squad fight for playing positions and time. But they have also been fun as players get to know each other. The training has been led by our NBL1 Coach, Jacqui, and the three senior squads have come together well. We envisage long term success as these squads build together. We hope to play a quick, aggressive and attacking style of basketball. Our inexperience and lack of height will be compensated for by effort, evenness and commitment. With the vocal support of the Sabre Crowd, our team will give

fter a very long 12 month off-season, the Sandringham Sabres Championship Youth League Women’s team is ready to commence their season with a double header on the weekend of March 13 and 14. Our first game is away to Kilsyth on Saturday night at 5.30pm and then our first home game is against Dandenong on Sunday at 1.00pm. We’d love to see as many junior Sabres and local domestic players at the Sunday Home opener as possible. We’ll need your support to deal with two of the powerhouses of the competition.

I
t’s been a long offseason but with the VYCM season set to tip-off this Saturday, here’s a quick synopsis of how our group is shaping up: The 2020-2021 VYCM are hoping to play a fun, fast and unselfish brand of basketball that will push the pace and capitalize on the strengths of our group early and often.
Winning the race up the floor, playing in space and letting it fly are part of our core tenets– hopefully the offensive style of play we are able to engender is one that is exciting for fans to watch and players to be a part of. We under no illusion that we need to be better defensively – defending with purpose and dominating effort plays will be our staples as we seek to improve game by game.
