WELCOME Welcome back! We’re back in full swing now with week two of the Big V competition upon us already, a great moment for all our SBA members. The Women’s team had a loss against Kilsyth and a win against Dandenong, while the men also had a loss to Kilsyth but a resounding win over Blackburn. Some good numbers came out of this weekend: • Campbell Blogg had 24 against Blackburn • Lucy Burke had 20 against Dandenong • Emma Crees had 16 against Kilsyth • Felicity Hilford averaged 16.5 points over both games

5pm – SATURDAY 20th March 2021
I enjoyed seeing our junior members supporting our teams at the home games on Sunday, some of those kids had some great dance moves courtside! This week sees us take on Ballarat, a very strong opponent and I would like to take this opportunity to wish them all the best for the weekend games. Go Sabres! Basketball is back bigger and better. 150 Tulip Street, Cheltenham 9583 4481 southernbasketball.com.au
Although Saturday night was disappointing, the men were able to bounce back in a big way on Sunday afternoon. To say we shot the lights out, would be an understatement – we followed up Saturday’s loss with a 60pt win on Sunday, highlighted by shooting 16/38 @ 42.1% from the three point line. An even attack with all players contributing, it was pleasing to see the group play with an enthusiasm and joy that was infectious. It was also great to see all the support from the Sabres community in the stands and I speak for the group when I say we are appreciative of you guys coming down.
Scoring leaders: Campbell Blogg 24pts, Mitchell Stewart 14pts, Mamuch Chuol 16pts
Mitchell St ewart
Although we split this weekend, we are hopefully that the lessons learned will hold us in good stead for weeks to come. The guys have been working hard this week and are chomping at the bit to play at home vs Ballarat on Saturday night! Andy Lim – Coach SABRES DOUBLE HEADER – VYC Saturday 20th March 2021 7

PREVIEW: Round 2
SABRES v RUSH
5pm – SATURDAY 20th March 2021
Enduring two roof leak interruptions, and two court shifts, we fought back over the next three quarters to draw level with two minutes to go. Then the roof leak interrupted our run, and a late chance at winning with a final play was unsuccessful. So we left with a close loss but an upbeat mood. Good pressure by Abby Riggs and Chloe Hicks, and some great play by debutants, Jazmine Grollo and Ashley Smirniotis, were pivotal in getting us back into the game. Emma Crees (16 points) hit a number of three-pointers which helped greatly, and Alice Humble and Mia Cigognini did a great job on their bigs.
We returned home on Sunday for a game against the Dandenong Rangers, who had also suffered a close loss on Saturday night. The game was high-scoring and tight throughout, as each team gained and lost momentum. We had great production from Felicity Hilford (24 points, 5 assists), Lucy Burke (20 points, 9 rebounds) and Sally Burke (15 points, 8 rebounds, 5 steals) at both ends of the court. We also got very strong performances from 2 of our Under 18 VC team, Ella Razga and Jemima O’Toole. But most encouraging for the coaches was that, for the second game in a row, all players scored and all players scrapped on defense. This is our model of play for the season- high pace, high scoring and willing to play hard on defense.
BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship WOMEN VYC Women Review- Round 1 Saturday night @ Kilsyth Sunday afternoon v Dandenong @ home
T
he Sandringham Sabres Championship Youth League Women’s team commenced their season with a tough double header on the weekend of March 13 and 14, against two traditional powerhouses of the competition in Kilsyth and Dandenong. Our first game was away to Kilsyth on a wet Saturday night. We were stunned by the pressure that Kilsyth exerted early and quickly dropped behind by 10 points.
4 SABRES DOUBLE HEADER – VYC Sunday Saturday7th 20th July March 20192021
Thanks again to my under-recognized assistant, Cal Charge, and our super team manager, Vicky Riggs. Thanks also to all players who have committed to training with the squad, including a number of Sabres juniors in the Under 21 and 18 programs. Let’s all continue to enjoy the ride.

SABRES v MINERS
BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship MEN VYC Men Review- Round 1 Saturday night @ Kilsyth Sunday afternoon v Blackburn @ home
T
he Sandringham Sabres VYCM started their 2021 campaign with a double header against Kilsyth on Saturday night and Blackburn on Sunday afternoon. After a delayed tip off to the night’s proceedings, our men came out firing jumping out to a 10pt lead highlighted by some inspired shot making. 6 SABRES DOUBLE HEADER – VYC Saturday 20th March 2021
A balanced attack coupled with efficient shooting kept the group in it with a chance after three quarter time despite Kilysth rallying a charge and exerting their will on the rebounding front. Unfortunately, after trading blows for the whole game, turnovers in the 4th quarter proved costly. Although we shot 38.2% clip from deep, the score gap was impossible to surmount due to the amount of giveaways and free easy baskets afforded. Scoring leaders: Ben Charnley 13pts, Tom Koppens 13pts, Bailey Clarkson 12pts
