WELCOME Round 3 After a split weekend between our VYC teams, we welcome Bendigo and Waverley to Sandringham for round 3 of the BigV VYC Season. It was a great outing for our VYCW (2-1) with Lucy Burke finishing with 19 points in a good victory against Ballarat. This week they look to extend their win streak to 3 on Saturday night. For the VYCM (1-2), they had a tough game last Saturday night going down to Ballarat by just 6 points. Campbell Blogg having another game high 19 points for our youth men.

150 Tulip Street, Cheltenham 9583 4481 southernbasketball.com.au
As was the case in Kilsyth Round 1 game, we let go of the rope. Rushed shooting and an inability to execute down the stretch meant that we were walking away from the weekend 1-2, instead of the 3-0 which we possibly could be sitting at. Whilst we played with an effort worthy to win, we need to play with an evenness of head plus heart. The VYCM have been working hard at practice to shore up late game execution, deliberacy plus shot quality throughout games and hopefully this will put us in good stead for the games ahead. SABRES v BRAVES
5pm – SATURDAY 27th March 2021
Spurred on by some vocal support from the Under 14 VC Sabres girls, we chipped away over the next couple of quarters and drew level just before three quarter time. This was largely due to some wonderful rebounding efforts from Mia Cigognini, Sally Burke and Jaz Grollo, and hustle plays by two of our Under 18VC debutants, Christina Roberts and Katie Ritchie. Finally, in the last quarter, everything clicked into gear and some great outside shooting and tougher defense appeared to have broken a tiring Ballarat. But never underestimate the resilience of country folk- Ballarat kept coming back.
With 5 seconds to go, Lucy Burke made two free throws to give us a 72-70 lead, and a solid defensive stand, held off Ballarat’s last play. We were ecstatic and got to sing the Sabres theme song loudly in the rooms, accompanied by our Under 14 cheersquad. Any juniors turning up to future home games are welcome to come and sing with us if we can pull off a win. The louder the better. Thanks to Cal and Vicki again for their great efforts, and to the girls for their ‘hang tough together’ attitude. But any time that you want to have an easy win, the coaches would be gloriously happy.
BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship WOMEN VYC Women Review- Round 2 Saturday night v Ballarat @ home
T
he Sandringham Sabres Championship Youth League Women’s team played a home match on Saturday night against a severely depleted Ballarat team. A flu bug had gone through the regional city of Ballarat, leaving the Ballarat coach with only seven players. Was assistant coach, Cal Charge, seen in Ballarat with a test tube during the week? Perhaps lulled by this state, Sandringham started woefully, and our team was down by 14 at stages of both the first and second quarters. A very courageous Ballarat team was outplaying and outhustling our girls.

BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship MEN VYC Men Review- Round 2 Saturday night v Ballarat @ home
T
he VYC Men’s team suffered a tough loss against Ballarat Saturday night – 82 to 88. The first quarter was a free flowing affair with both teams trading baskets at a ferocious pace. A late surge in the quarter – and spark provided by the bench (total 41 bench points in the whole game) - helped spur a lead of 5 heading into the first break. 6 SABRES DOUBLE HEADER – VYC Saturday 27th March 2021
Unfortunately, as the second quarter progressed; some missed defensive assignments coupled with crucial rebounding mishaps led to Ballarat taking advantage by 1 at the main break. The third quarter saw us dig a hole of 8pts early on. We endeavoured to shoot our way out of it – but to no avail until a late barrage of 3pt field goals meant we were heading in the 4th on level pegging. It’s a dangerous game; and we were extremely fortunate to be that close despite being outplayed on multiple facets by a hungry Ballarat squad.
