WELCOME Round 4 After the Easter holiday break, both teams will be eager to get back on court as they face Hume City and Hawthorn this Sunday. Welcome to both clubs to the Sabredome and best of luck to our VYCW and VYCM programs. I would also like to extend my welcome to FAMASO as the Youth Championship Women’s Naming rights program for the 2021 season! Very much looking forward to working with them throughout the year.

2 SABRES DOUBLE HEADER – VYC Sunday 11th April 2021
BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship MEN
Offensively, there was a balance of perimeter and paint attack which was pleasing to see. Defensively, an ability to defend penetration and hold up on the glass put us in the position to be successful down the stretch. Scoring leaders: Ryan Heath (26pts), Bailey Clarkson (14pts), Tomo Owens (11pts) VYCM – Preview – Round 4 Week 4 gives the Sandringham VYCM squad a chance to consolidate a two win weekend. Currently sitting at 3-2, the group is hopeful it can boost its standings with another consecutive week of double headers.
The men travel to Keilor on Saturday; a hostile environment where wins are hard to come by. Keilor have proven to play a physical game which we will have to match and meet with equal endeavour. With both teams cranking the pace, it should be an exciting affair for both squads. On Sunday, we host a young, energetic Hawthorn squad. We will have to play with consistent effort and a deliberateness in order to secure this one. It’d be great to see some of the Sabre faithful out at the Sabredome as we push to extend our position on the ledger! Andy Lim – Coach SABRES DOUBLE HEADER – VYC Sunday 11th April 2021 7

efore the Easter break, the VYCM Southern Sabres played host to a hungry Waverley squad – determined to get their first win of the season. Sitting at 1-2, the VYCM group came out sluggish with the game slowing right down. Whilst the first quarter belonged to Waverley, we never looked back as we began to dictate tempo and play at a pace we are accustomed to. Although giving up size, power and weight, the group played with multiple efforts and a connectedness

defensively. Shooting remains to be one of our strengths this season, clocking in 44% from deep off 25 attempts! Scoring leaders: Campbell Blogg (18pts), Bailey Clarkson (15pts), Ryan Heath (15pts)

he group travelled to Knox on Sunday – a barn burner of a game which the spectators were treated to. An up and down affair which translated into overtime, the group dug extremely deep and were able to get the job done 7572. It was pleasing to see the group play with an evenness and grit that should hold them in good stead for weeks to come if they are able to replicate this urgency.

SABRES v BRONCOS
1pm – SUNDAY 11th April 2021
We did a reasonable job on Bendigo’s stars but could not stop their other players. We couldn’t hit a shot, and they couldn’t miss. This was a game of few Sabres highlights, and best left in the historical garbage can. Felicity Hilford scored 10. On Sunday, we travelled to Knox stadium for a 1.00pm start against the Knox Raiders. The Raiders were coming off a great Saturday night win, and started on fire jumping out to a 12-3 lead. The Sabres hung tough and chipped away with strong performances from Lucy Burke (18 pts and 10 rebounds) and Mia Cigognini (10 pts and 12 rebounds).
Overall, the effort and output was 100 times greater than in the previous game, and we were only two down with a minute to go. Knox hit a big 3 pointer and some fouling at the end meant a narrow ten point loss. But some of the team spirit had returned. Great debut from Under 18VC player Jaida Reid and continued input from other Under 18s, Ella and Katie, helped in the weekend recovery. Thanks again to Cal and Vicki again for their great efforts in keeping the team going during a hard weekend. Also thanks to our supporters who showed up in numbers to support the women on Saturday, and then went out to Knox to loudly

ur first game of Round 3 was at home on Saturday night March 27 at 5pm against a super strong Bendigo team including many players who suited up in the WNBL for Bendigo last season. We warmed up quite well, and from then on, the night soured significantly. We copped a whoopin’ (for younger readers, that means we got thrashed).
