BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship WOMEN VYC Women Review- Round 4 Sunday April 11 v HUME CITY @ Home
O
ur only game of Round 4 was at home on Sunday against a young Hume City team who have been on fire this season winning 4 out of 5 games. They had played on Saturday night against a strong Diamond Valley team and won by 35, so the task was going to be difficult. We started the game well and were level after five minutes, but then the strength of the Hume defense and transition

game, combined with some careless turnovers from the Sabres girls saw Hume go on a 15-4 run. Unfortunately, that was the final difference in the game, and although the Sabres girls fought back from a 16 point half-time deficit to narrow the gap to 7 with two minutes to go in the game, Hume steadied to win by 11. The introduction of a new offense certainly helped the movement of the Sabres team, and hopefully this will result in improved results over the remaining weeks of the season. Felicity Hilford had a strong scoring game in the point guard spot with 17 points at a good clip – she will be disappointed to have missed

1pm – SUNDAY 18th April 2021 the first foul shot of her season having gone 20 straight before this. Lucy Burke had 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Sally and Mia also contributed 15 rebounds between them. This was a crucial indicator for us as Hume are a fantastic rebounding team. Welcome also to Madi McFarlane returning to the Youth League team for her 2021 debut. Two main areas hurt us in the game – shooting percentage and relatively unforced turnovers and missed layups on transition. However, there appears to be a trend upwards in our competitiveness with the best teams in the competition over the past two games.
Thanks to Ash Smirniotis (injured player-fill in team manager) and Vicki again Felicity Hilf ord for their help. In the words of the famous and inspirational Coach Dorey in Finding Nemo, ‘Hey Mr. Grumpy Gills. When life gets you down, just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming.’ Michael Burke – Coach SABRES SABRESDOUBLE DOUBLEHEADER HEADER– –VYC VYCSunday Sunday18th 7thApril July 2021 2019 5

BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship MEN VYC Men Review- Round 3 Saturday April 10 v KEILOR @ Keilor Sunday april 11 v HAWTHORN @ KHome
T
he VYCM team suffered a disappointing loss at the hands of Keilor on Saturday night, going down 79-74. The first half was a defensive struggle with neither team able to get it going offensively for any stretch, however the team was able to hold slim 3 point leads at the quarter time and half time breaks.
6 SABRES DOUBLE HEADER – VYC Sunday 18th April 2021
Coming into the second half, Keilor were able to break the shackles a bit offensively, whilst the Sabres boys still struggled to find a rhythm. Whilst the scores remained close for much of the second half, a lack of offensive consistency (demonstrated by 40% shooting and 22 turnovers) meant we couldn’t get over the hump. Despite another strong bench performance (31 bench points to 3) and some late game heroic shooting from Bailey Clarkson and Campbell Blogg, Keilor were too good on the night.

3pm – SUNDAY 18th April 2021 In the second game of the weekend, the VYCM team were able to have a strong performance to take a 95-63 win over Hawthorn. In a positive response to the previous night, the team was able to find more of a rhythm and perform better as a collective offensively, scoring over 20 points in each quarter. A really strong run at the start of the second quarter saw the team build a 20 point advantage that was sustained throughout much of the remainder of the game. Terrific shooting from Campbell Blogg and Mitchell Stewart, combined with a strong debut game from Jensen Bradtke created great energy for the team that came out on the court.
The VYCM team will continue to work at being consistently efficient and effective on the offensive Mamuch Chuo l end whilst hopefully continuing our positive form on the defensive end in the lead up to games this weekend against two challenging opponents in Ringwood and Diamond Valley.
