We welcome the Mt Gambier Pioneers to the Sabredome for the first home game for our NBL1 teams. It is great to have NBL1 basketball back in town and I look forward to watching both teams compete for their second wins. On Sunday, our VYC teams go up against the Melbourne Tigers in what should be some great basketball. Both our teams are in top 4 contention for each of their pools and will look to solidify their spot in the finals. PREVIEW: Round 2 NBL1 – WOMEN Review - Round 1 Saturday April 17 v MELBOURNE @ MSAC
T
he NBL1 women’s team had a brilliant start to the season with a 25-point win over Melbourne Tigers on Saturday night. With every player hitting the score board and a strong defensive effort the ladies headed into half time up by 29 points. Jenna O’Hea scored 27 points and had 10 rebounds, closely followed by Rachel Jarry with 22 points. This weekend the team is excited for their first home game, Saturday night against Mt Gambier. They will back it up against Nunawading on Sunday April 25. Amy O’Neill
Jacqui O’NEILL – Coach NBL1 – MEN Review - Round 1 Saturday April 17 v MELBOURNE @ MSAC
T
he start we’ve been working for! Not glossing over the brutal impact of the pandemic, and after an intense preseason the Sabre men have finally returned to the floor. We opened the 2021 campaign with an away win versus the Melbourne Tigers, which provided confidence, belief and validation to a very young, inexperienced and hungry group of athletes. This game was highlighted by the debut for the clubs new marquee signing, NBL and Sudanese International Kuany Kuany. Kuany led the way with 20 points and 9 rebounds showing what his athleticism, scoring punch and character means to the team. Kuany was supported by Tom O’Brien (17 points on 7/8 field goals) and Nic Gabsch 17 points and 8 rebounds) who built on their time with the group in 2019. They were joined by the cast of plucky undersized, and inexperienced Sabres that have been passionately been improving since before Christmas. We saw a great performance off the bench from Kobe Davies, a return from over two-years off the court (one year due to a significant injury) from Finn Kenny, and the debut from our two college prospects Brody Nunn and Clancy Bird (who head off to the University of Seattle together in June. A solid first half
SOUTH
ended up being the difference in the 95-92 victory for the Orange and Blue. Although the Tigers made a strong run in the second half, controlling the scoreboard from the freethrow line, the Sabres shooting would prove to be a point of difference (14/32 43.8 3FG%). It was a valiant effort in the waning seconds to hit some clutch free-throws and start the season off the right way. This evening, we welcome the Mt Gambier Pioneers. Who after some time back in the South Australian competition, return to the illustrious NBL1 South. The Pioneers currently started their season with a tough home loss to Bendigo. But they come to us with a talented roster, and the club would be disappointed with a loss that doesn’t reflect their faculty. They come to the Sabredome bolstered by NBL1 stalwarts Tom Daly and Erik Burdon, plus Kane de Wit and new signing Duom Dawan who led the team with 31 points on Saturday night versus the Braves. The Sabres will have to replicate the strong shooting of last week but must improve on the defensive end, with the Pioneers coming in with so many prolific players, that defensive execution will be the determining factor if we are to find success on our home floor. Important reminder from all of the staff and athletes; thank you! Without you the fans, we can’t do this. We hope the atmosphere this season will be the best it’s ever been! Please remember, our doors are always open to people or domestic teams/coaches who would like to observe practice, join us for the pregame address, or just invest in, and enjoy being around our group. We look forward to seeing you all this season. GO SABRES! Nathan Cooper Brown – Coach

T
ig double-header in round 5 where our first game at Ringwood coincided with the huge victory by the NBL1 women’s team. So we went in with a smaller line-up of nine players. We also debuted Kate Godden and welcomed back Ella Razga from the Under 18VC team. We started the game excellently and led by 13 early in the second quarter. We rode a bit of a strong comeback from a tall Ringwood group and were leading by 8 in the third quarter when Sally Burke (10 points up to this stage) went down with a knee injury. This really upset the team, and we lost control of the game for a period. But our players, led brilliantly by Mia Cigognini (13 points, 11 rebounds), continued to fight and scrap to give our team a chance to win at the end. Unfortunately, our final play came up short, and foul-shots at the end led to a Ringwood victory by 3. Sunday brought a much larger cast of 11 players, including debutant Summer Keating and Jimmy O’Toole from the Under 18VC squad. This now means that we have had 9 debutants to Youth League level during the first 8 matches of the year. In a game of momentum shifts, we started brilliantly with Emma Crees and Abby Riggs shooting well, and led 20-2 after 5 minutes. Then Diamond Valley dropped into a zone which caused us problems for two quarters, and it was only a buzzer-beater by Flick Hilford that left us 2 points up at three quarter time. Some great defensive work from the team saw us blow the lead back out to double figures and a much needed win, 73-60. Lucy Burke had a great all-round game with 25 points and 16 rebounds, and I also must mention the 6 assists by Abby and the superb defense and rebounding by Mia. But this was a team defensive effort that gave us the victory. Thanks to Cal and Vicki again for their help – it was especially important on Saturday night with an injured player. Thanks also for the many messages of support that Sal received from teammates and other coaches. Sometimes, it is important to reflect on what is important in being part of a community club. Michael Burke – Coach
he VYCM team once again split the tough weekend against Ringwood and Diamond Valley 1-1. On Saturday night, the team got off to a great start in the first half against Ringwood, taking a 9 point lead in to the main break, behind some gritty inside play, highlighted by getting to the line 28 times throughout the game. In the first half this was coupled with a really strong defensive performance, forcing turnovers and creating subsequent scoring opportunities. Unfortunately the defensive intensity could not sustain in to the second half, with Ringwood making some outside shots to give them the lead late in the fourth quarter. To the ream’s credit, they kept fighting and behind some terrific scoring from Campbell Blogg (23 points) and Ryan Heath (14 points) were able to come back over the top and run out victorious. In the second game of the weekend, the VYCM team were defeated by Diamond Valley 82-67. Once again, the first half was a strong one for the team, holding a lead at quarter time and trailing by a slim margin of 3 at half time. However, the third quarter spelled trouble for the team’s offence, sputtering to only 10 points in the quarter whilst shooting 32% overall for the game. Whilst the Sabres outscored their opponents in the final period, the hole that had been dug in the third quarter was too big to work out of. The boys and coaches are looking forward to focusing on a worthy Melbourne opponent for an Anzac Day home game! Andy Lim – Coach
