WELCOME Round 9 One double header this Saturday night at the Sabredome sees the Diamond Valley Eagles in town. We welcome both Diamond Valley teams and look forward to a great contest. Its great to see the young Sabres juniors out competing against some tough competition over the last few weeks and I look forward to seeing their progression throughout the year. With high class athletes like Jenna O’Hea, Rachel Jarry and Kuany Kuany helping and leading them, it’s going to be great development over the year.

BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship WOMEN VYC Women Review– Round 8 Sunday May 9th v Sunbury at Sunbury 1.00pm
W
e started our first long away trip of the season in stunning fashion with a 14-1 run. From there, the Sabres team forgot some of our defensive principles, and allowed a young and athletic Sunbury team back into the game. At three quarter time, scores were tied. Fortunately, some more solid defense and some outstanding shooting allowed us to run out with an 88-80 win. We now have a 4 SABRES DOUBLE HEADER – VYC Sunday 16th 7th July May2019 2021
6 win/6 loss season record and can try to build on this over the next two weeks with four winnable games. We had great performances from a number of players. Lucy Burke had a 37 point, 9 rebound, 4 assist game. Flick Hilford also had 24 points and 4 assists. Abby Riggs gave off 7 assists, and young gun Katie Ritchie chipped in with 9 points and 8 rebounds. Improvements in our offensive performance need to be matched by better defense for the coaches to be happy.

1pm – SUNDAY 16th May 2021 Round 9 Preview Week 9 sees the Sandringham Youth League Women’s team in a double header. On Saturday, we will be away at 6.30pm against the Hawthorn Magic. On Sunday, we will play at home at 1.00pm against a Ringwood side that beat us by 3 a couple of weeks ago. Both teams include players that have had huge games in the last couple of weeks, with Hawthorn’s Kurkowski girls filling it up against Dandenong two weeks ago, with Kiahna Liddy of Ringwood having a 28 point/10 rebound outing in the last match.
An interesting Lucy Burk e in action in Round 4 theme in the VYCW competition now is that, whilst the top few teams have powered ahead of the pack, anyone in the pack (including us, Hawthorn and Ringwood) can beat anyone else. Both games are winnable for the Sabres, but both will require solid 40-minute performances. As always, effort and intelligence will be keys to victory. SABRES v THUNDER
BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship MEN VYC Men Review- Round 8 Sunday May 9th v McKinnon @ GESAC
T
he VYCM Team suffered a disappointing loss to the McKinnon Cougars 73-68 on Sunday. A positive first half saw the team take a 43-37 lead in to the half-time break, on the back of strong scoring from Ryan Heath and Bailey Clarkson, coupled with terrific defensive execution. However, coming out of the break, the offense dried up, with the team only scoring 15 points in the last 15 minutes

of action. This dry spell combined with some of the McKinnon scorers getting off the chain and an inability to finish off defensive possessions, which saw McKinnon end with a 16-5 second chance point differential, led to the team being unable to get over the line. The team is looking forward to having the first rematch game of the season against Keilor on Sunday, after the Thunder were able to get the win in the previous encounter. It was a hard fought game and this weekend shapes to be similar. Andy Lim – Coach
