PREVIEW: Round 10 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship WOMEN
elcome back to the Sabredome for the Youth League Women’s Saturday match against the Dandenong Rangers! With both teams sitting in very similar positions in opposing conferences, a very competitive game is to be expected. Today our team will be looking to continue our focus on playing fast, with lots of fast break points as well as a lot of hard nosed defence. These two key points proved to be very valuable in last week’s game against Diamond Valley.
Last week we saw great scoring contributions on both sides of the ball by everyone! All that played scored in the game with Keryl Ouseys 18 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals leading the way scoring wise and Abby Riggs playing key defence on Diamond Valleys top scorer holding her to 2/15 from the field. After our home game against Dandenong, we take a drive to Casey for our Sunday game. This will be our second matchup of the season against the Cavaliers where the team will look to take out a second win in as many tries against them. Thanks to everyone for their ongoing support!

PREVIEW: Round 10 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship MEN Saturday May 21st v Melbourne (won 77-63) Sunday May 22nd v Ringwood (lost 87-95)
T
he VYCM split last week’s games against Melbourne and Ringwood. On Saturday, the men were able to claim a 77-63 Melbourne victory with solid contributions from all, and a high level execution on both ends of the floor. Sunday was a different story with moments of brilliance being balanced out with careless play leading to Ringwood runs. We couldn’t contain their offensive firepower and we eventually fell short 95-87. 4 VYC double header SATURDAY 28th May 2022
Preview This week we host the Diamond Valley Eagles at the Sabredome. The size and physicality across the board of DV’s rotation - Poelsma, Kafristsas, Macbegor - certainly will stretch our men and our ability to defend/rebound and chain together stops will be paramount to secure the W. Hoping to bounce back from last week’s loss to Ringwood, the men are hopeful that a big week of practice and film will put them in good stead for this week and games to come. Thanks to all of our families and sponsors and supporters for their continued support during the 2022 season! Andy Lim – VYC Men’s Head Coach

NBL1 REVIEW
A
fter the weekend’s games, the Sandringham NBL1 Men and Women are both currently sitting with 4 wins and 4 losses apiece after 8 games. With just under two thirds of the season still to play, both Sabres teams are well poised to launch an assault on finals. They’re going to have to do it away from home however, with a long month looming away from the Sabredome. SABRES NBL1 MEN: The men have Built some momentum with a 3 game win streak catapulting them into 11th place. The weekend proved to be huge, with Tohi Smith-Milner’s late clutch two giving the Sabres an important one point win (83-82) over the Nunawading Spectres. The Sabres had 4 scorers in double figures with Shea Ili leading a well balanced attack with 20 points and 7 assists. On Sunday it was more of the same as the Sabres ground out an 85-80 win over the Melbourne Tigers with Ili proving to be damaging again with 24 points and 7 assists while Smith-Milner continued his good form with 25 points and 9 rebounds. SABRES NBL1 WOMEN: The women lost a key piece early, with Rachel Jarry going down with a serious head knock just 4 minutes into their game against Nunawading. Despite being in it up until half time (down 44-40), the Sabres dried up offensively and couldn’t get anything going in the second half. They were eventually over-run 100-67 by a rampaging Nunawading. Funda Nakkasoglu led scoring with 20 points, while Georgia Pineau added 19 points and 8 rebounds. Amy O’Neill contributed 12 and 5 assists. Desperate for a win, the Sabres headed to MSAC on Sunday for another match-up against the Melbourne Tigers. In a scrappy affair, the Sabres ran out winners 62-56 with Georgia Pineau (16 points and 13 rebounds) and Funda Nakkasoglu 13 points again leading the way. It was two big threes from Lucy Burke down the stretch that gave the Sabres the breathing space to pull away. The women now welcome Australian based American Brittany Smart into the line-up for the remainder of the season.
