elcome back to the Sabredome. This week we play away against Diamond Valley on Saturday night and will be returning to get another win on our home court. Last week we had a great win against Frankston in our season opener on our home court in front of a great crowd.
Our team defence was outstanding and we are hoping to do the same this week. Ballarat are coming off a tough loss to Geelong last week. With a star-studded team with the likes of Jade Melbourne bouyed by the news of her WNBA drafting (selected in the third round of the WNBA draft with pick 33 by Seattle Storm), we are hoping for a tight game. PREVIEW: Round 2 NBL1 – MEN
O
ur Sabres NBL1 mens team face a tough double header this week after a home loss against Frankston in our opening game to the season. In what was a promising start and a competitive three quarters of play, we were overwhelmed in the fourth quarter by a hot-shooting Blues team that early on look to be one of the stronger teams in the league this season. Highlights from the Sabres was the debut in the Orange and Blue from Tom Wright (24 points), and his understudy Cooper Goonewardene (18 points), who was fearless in his first ever game at this level.
This week we take on the Diamond Valley Eagles away on Saturday night, before returning home on Sunday to face Ballarat. Both teams had week 1 losses, but have added players to their rosters this week with SEM Phoenix’s Dane Pineau to suit up for the Eagles and Deng Gak returning from the University of Miami to play for Ballarat this week. We will also welcome back to the Sabredome Preston Bungei (this time in Miners colours), who was both a fan and club favourite with our men’s team last season.

his Sunday afternoon, the VYCM Sabres will play host to the Ringwood Hawks at the Sabredome. The Ringwood Hawks present an unique blend of youth / older NBL1 talent and we will need to be sharp in order to come up with the W!
Having unfortunately dropped the single game last week against Knox, a week of diligent practice will serve the men well as we look to be better and more grounded defensively. On the offensive side, the group will need to search for easier avenues to score despite prolific scoring outbursts by Campbell and Bailey in previous weeks. The team will also be buoyed by the return of some key personnel – Tom Koppens and Sammy Cartwright. Joe Lubarsky and Hugh Romancz will be better equipped to deal with the weekend after returning last week and having a week of practice under their belt.
