PREVIEW: Round 14 NBL1 – WOMEN
L
ast week we secured our 4th win of the season with a come from behind victory at Frankston. Both teams were missing players and Frankston dominated the first quarter to lead by 15 at the break. Small in roads in the second quarter allowed us to close the gap to 11 at the half. It was at half time that the team resolved to step up the defensive pressure and take the fight at Frankston and the full house that where cheering the home team on. The first five minutes of the third we closed to within three points and it was game on. At the last change we were within 1 after taking the lead for a moment, but momentum had swung our way.
SOUTHERN SABRES v BACoE Although the lead changed several times during the last, a timely 3 from break out player of the game Morgan and some clutch foul shots we came away with the win. This week we face the cream of Australia’s young and emerging basketball talent with the COE playing their last game of the season against us. Although talented, this young group has battled to just three wins for the season and struggling at times against older more experienced players. If we play like last Sunday then we will have a chance of our first back-to-back wins for the year. Go Sabres! ANDREW POTTER – Head Coach

SABRES DOUBLE HEADER – NBL1 Sunday 14th July 2019 7
JULY SCHOOL HOLIDAY WRAP-UP There has been no rest for the wicked here at the SABREDOME as our holidays have been jam-packed full of basketball. As we return to our regular scheduled programming, with #SBADomestic returning tomorrow, let’s take a minute to reflect on what has been a huge two weeks of camps and tournaments!
5 June: Euro Exposure Clinic We were honoured to welcome several representatives from Spanish-based Valencia Basket, who hosted a Europeanstyle skills and exposure clinic. On top of 75 current MUVBL Sabres, we also welcomed 50 local coaches who increased their skills and knowledge.
1 July: Girls Only Camp The school holidays tipped off with a bang as we hosted 84 girls aged 5-13 for our Girls Only Supercamp. Teaching the fundamentals of basketball and throwing in some fun games, this was an astounding success, which we look to replicate next semester!
9 July: 3x3 Tournament Tuesday saw a colossal day of action as the Sabredome as we hosted our Under-12 and Under-14 3x3 tournaments. Congratulations to the two winning teams:
ly 2019 Monday 1st Ju – 84 girls Y DA GIRLS ONLY
Under-12: Mustang Mad Dogs (The first ever all girls team to win a 3x3 competition) Under-14: Triple B
2-4 July: Supercamp We continued on with three massive days of hoops, hosting our traditional Supercamp. Hosting almost 300 Sabre Cubs over the three days, our brilliant coaches taught these future stars the skills required to one day represent the Southern Sabres. 11-12 July: Supercamp We finished off the holidays with another massive two-day Supercamp. With the help of some of our NBL1 and VYC Sabres, our fantastic coaches started the process of creating the future generations of ballers.
Tuesday 2nd July 2019 SUPERCAMP – 103 children 8 SABRES DOUBLE HEADER – NBL1 Sunday 14th July 2019
Thank you to all who attended our Supercamps or took part in our 3x3 tournaments. We now steamroll ahead to #SBADomestic re-starting tomorrow!

SOUTHERN SABRES v BACoE
L
ast week saw the Sabres struggle to close down an efficient and well drilled Frankston team. Despite some pleasing individual performances from Sam McDaniel (20 points, 5 rebounds) and Ryan Biesty (12 points, 6 rebounds), the team allowed our opposition to shoot a remarkable 62 per cent from the field and were chasing for the entire game. As a whole we were disappointed with our effort and with only a handful of games remaining, we look to redeem ourselves this week with an improved effort at both ends of the floor. Our second last home game for the season will see us take on some of the best young basketball talent in the country as we face the CoE. They have had a successful season, having won 7 games and are not a team to be taken lightly. This will be a real test for our team and we look forward to the challenge. Like any game we certainly have an opportunity to secure a win, but it will not come without us playing much better as a team at both ends of the court. We look forward to the challenge. Go Sabres.
