he Anzac Day match was a game of momentum shifts. We started very strongly and led by 13 at the half. But Melbourne fought back well with some great three point shooting in the third quarter and early fourth quarter to narrow the gap to 7. Then Madi McFarlane (9 points/ 3 rebounds) sprang into action nailing four long baskets to allow us to attain a 13 point win. We had great performances from a number of players, and everyone contributed something. Mia Cigognini again filled the stat sheet with 8 rebounds, 7 steals, 4 assists and 4 points (and a +/- of 26). Lucy Burke had a 19 point, 10 rebound, 4 assist game. Jaz Grollo and Jaida Reid both had 11 points and Abby Riggs did a lot of everything including locking-down on one of Melbourne’s keys. But this one was one of those dream games for a coach where the win was rightfully a team effort. Regardless of who scored and rebounded, the offense looked much better with quicker transition and better ball and player movement. Only rarely did the ball stick in a player’s hands, and often it was through trying to find a cutter or shooter in a better position. Defense was also improved, with a particular focus on securing the boards. Thanks to Cal and Vicki again for their help. Cal deserves a lot of credit for our team’s success so far in the season. He controls all of the subbing decisions and does a great job keeping the spirit up in the team. Finally, he calms me down, which is an at-times not insubstantial task.
he VYCM Sabres had a successful performance in their win over the Melbourne Tigers 88-69. The team started strongly defensively, only allowing 13 points in the 1st quarter and were able to capitalise on the other end, building a 17 point lead during the first half. However, the Tigers hit back strongly in the second quarter, cutting in to the Sabres lead. Strong shooting from Campbell Blogg (13 points, 3/3 3pt at half time), coupled with the positive defensive foundation laid early, meant the team held a 3 point lead going in to the break. The Sabres came out firing in the third quarter, starting the period on a 15-4 run and never looked back. 5 double digit scorers (Blogg, Ryan Heath, Bailey Clarkson, Joe Lubarsky and Tom Koppens) combined with Ben Charnley’s 8 assists demonstrated a team willing to share the load offensively to the team’s benefit. It was terrific overall performance from the VYCM team, with Melbourne never gaining the lead throughout the 40 minutes. The team is looking forward to the challenge of attempting to replicate it against a Bulleen team that have been running hot! Andy Lim – Coach

PREVIEW: Round 3 NBL1 – WOMEN Review - Round 2 Saturday April 24 v MT GAMBIER @ Home Sunday April 25 v NUNAWADING @ Nunawading
T
he women split the weekend with Jenna O’Hea a win against Mt Gambier and a loss against Nunawading. In the game against Mt Gambier Jenna O’Hea was unstoppable with 27 points and some great shooting from Cass Hill and Rach Jarry at 50% allowed the girls to gain the win. Against Nunawading Jenna O’Hea had 27 points and 8 rebounds, aided by Rachel Jarry with 16 points and 12 rebounds. This week the team plays Launceston, which will be tough as Keely Froling has been dominant and their new signing in Kelsey Griffin. . Jacqui O’NEILL – Coach NBL1 – MEN Review - Round 2 Saturday April 24 v MT GAMBIER @ Home Sunday April 25 v NUNAWADING @ Nunawading
A
lways room to improve. A tough weekend for the Sabre Men brought everyone back to earth. Saturday night saw a tough home loss to Mt Gambier, then the group backed up in an extremely difficult double header going down gallantly at 2019 NBL1 Champions the Nunawading Spectres. Saturday night’s 90-122 defeat was marked by the Sabres losing the free point battle by 22 points (free-throws, points off turnovers and second chance points), this combined with an elite shooting display from the Pioneers (16/30 3FG 53.3%) proved too much. Kuany Kuany led the way with 28 points and 10 rebounds, supported by strong guard play from Tom O’Brien (15 points) and Brody Nunn 14 points). Sunday was an exciting display of the defence needed to be successful at this level, and as the same with Saturday night, the Sabres turned on the clamps to win the final quarter holding the Spectres to just 12 points. We saw some of the potential that makes Clancy Bird a top prospect with two highlight slams (and second leading scorer with 10 points).
SOUTH
Another star performance from Kuany who netted 24 points and snatched a huge 17 rebounds. This afternoon, we welcome the North West Tasmania Thunder. The Thunder come off a heartbreaking overtime home loss to Ballarat. They played the talented Frankston group last night, so hopefully tired legs play in our favour. But they are loaded with ability, height, experience, and are well coached. The Sabres will have to replicate the strong defensive performance of last week’s last quarters, but must improve on the offensive end, increasing last week’s shooting percentages, and the assist to turnover ratio, are the key determining factors if we are to find success on our home floor. We would like to officially welcome Assistant Coach Brenton O’Brien who joins us after relocating to Melbourne. Plus, Evan Vallance takes over for his NBL1 debut as Head Coach as Brody Nunn and I are off to McKay (QLD) to represent Victoria at the U20 Nationals. I wish Coach Vallance and the group the best of luck. Important reminder from all of the staff and athletes; thank you! Without you the fans, we can’t do this. The atmosphere opening night was outstanding! Tom O’Brien Please remember, our doors are always open to people or domestic teams/coaches who would like to observe practice, join us for the pre-game address, or just invest in, and enjoy being around our group. We look forward to seeing you all this season. Nathan Cooper Brown – Coach
