PREVIEW: Round 2 NBL1 – WOMEN

SOUTHERN SABRES v DANDENONG

W

elcome to NBL1. Exciting times ahead! The Southern Sabres women played their first game of the new competition against Hobart Huskies, a brand new club. The team came out strong running our man offence and making baskets. This translated into great defence as Hobart struggled to run on us. Up by 7 points at the end of the first quarter, we were able to stretch the lead into double figures early in the second period. Hobart then went to a zone and we rushed our shots and found ourselves down by 2 points at half time. Refocused and reset, the second half became an arm wrestle. Both teams built small leads only to see the other team make some baskets and hit back. Unfortunately during the last quarter Hobart made a couple of shots and we eventually dropped the game by 8 points. Although we let that game slip, the team got confidence that we could play and deal with some huge threats like Cayla George and Tayla Roberts. Preparation for Launceston started post-Hobart with ice baths, massages, food and rest that night, followed by early morning beach recovery before heading up the road to Launceston. The Launceston team where going to present a different set of challenges. Again we came out strong and our man offence looked good – creating great shot opportunities, and we built a good lead by half time. But the Tornadoes are a young talented team and they kept coming. At times a player for them would come off the bench and score a few baskets, only to then disappear and someone else would pop up. A consistent for them was Stella Beck who played and controlled all 40 minutes, but we were more disciplined down the stretch and were not going to give this one away, eventually coming away with a 6 point win. This weekend we welcome Dandenong to our home. They are coming off a very good win against the Basketball Australia CoE and possess a good mix of young, up and coming players and experienced campaigners. It should be a fast and exciting game. We enjoyed singing the song last weekend and want to do it again. Go Sabres! ANDREW POTTER – Head Coach

PREVIEW: Round 2 NBL1 – MEN

SOUTHERN SABRES v DANDENONG

T

onight, we are excited to return to the Sabredome for this inaugural NBL1 home opener, as we welcome our guests the Dandenong Rangers. Last week, was our first chance to tackle this new, talented and exciting league as we took on the Tasmania road trip in the first round of the season. Both games provided results reflective of a team and club going through a rebuild. In game one versus the newly branded Hobart Huskies, it was a comeback from a double-digit deficit in the first half, as our Sabres clawed and fought their way back, and against all odds went into the third quarter with the lead. The boys committed as best they could, but with foul trouble, no Olympian Dave Barlow, and young star Sam McDaniel on a minute’s restriction (in both games), the team gave up 34 points in the fourth quarter and the result slipped away. A disappointing result, but gallant effort from one of the youngest and most inexperienced teams in the competition. In the second game, NW Tasmania used the home court to their advantage and started the game with some hot shooting. Fatigue, injuries, foul trouble, and consistent basic errors combined, with the Thunder’s superior talent meant the home team pulled away in the second quarter for a deserving win. Although it was a tough weekend, there were plenty of positives to take from it, including the on-court production and efforts of SBA juniors Kingsley Box, and Kobe Davies. The team left Tasmania with heads high, ready for tonight’s challenge. Training this week was energetic and focused, and each player was locked in.

We are excited to host the Rangers this evening, they come to us with a wealth of playing and coaching experience. Along with a pursuit of a title in 2019, they have young stars in Matt Kenyon and Keli Leaupepe, along with SEABL veterans Lucas Barker and Tim Lang. So, we know they’ll leave it all on the floor, and we must match them every step of the way. In round 1, Dandenong was defeated by the CoE, so we know they’ll be fired up to turn things around against our boys. Playing hard every possession, building on chemistry, and matching their ability to execute, are keys for tonight’s contest. From all the athletes and staff, thank you so much for your support. 2019 is a vital year, and the time to build a new culture around our NBL1 teams (and the Southern Basketball Association), and we wish to take that challenge on with you, the fans. Our doors are always open to people or junior teams who would like to observe practice, join us for the pregame address, or just invest and enjoy being around our group. We look forward to seeing you all this season. Go Sabres! PREVIEW: Round 4 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship WOMEN

SOUTHERN SABRES v MELBOURNE TIGERS

T

he VYC Women trekked to Altona Sunday morning for a tough game against the Gators. The girls started slowly as they struggled to contain Altona’s penetration and strong post play, and as a result were down 3 points at the first break. We jumped out of the blocks in the second quarter outscoring Altona 17-8 in the first 5 minutes. Newcomer Gabby Newton got the score ticking over and Alice Humble and Chelsea Bransden also upped their scoring output. Despite our hard running we were unable to shake Altona but did take a 5 point lead into the main break. The third quarter was all Sabres as we outscored the opposition 18-10 on the back of Chelsea’s three consecutive three pointers and some great shooting from Mia Cigognini. Excellent defence from Chloe Hicks and Chelsea led to a few steals and stretched the Sabres lead to 18 at the final change. A 10-2 run to start the fourth quarter and the lead crept out to 20 thanks to some great team defence, boxing out and hard running offensively. Once again it was a great team effort with lots of contributors – Chelsea (22 pts 5 rbs 8 stls), Mia (16 pts 5 rbs 5 ass), Gabby (10 pts 8 rbs 4 stls) Chloe (6 pts 10 rbs 6 ass 5 stls) and Alice (13 pts 13 rbs). This week we face the undefeated Melbourne Tigers. The Tigers are always a well prepared and a tough unit to play against – this week we will need to be switched on for the full four quarters.

Alice Humble made a great contribution in the win v Altona last week with 13 points and 13 rebounds (picured v Waverley) Chelsea Bransden has had a strong start to the 2019 VYC season (pictured v Hawthorn)

SABRES DOUBLE HEADER SAT & SUN – NBL1 Saturday 6th April and VYC Sunday 7th April 2019

PREVIEW: Round 4 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship MEN

SOUTHERN SABRES v NUNAWADING

S

abres VYC Men had a rough weekend with a couple of away losses to both McKinnon and Keilor. Playing with an inexperienced line-up on Saturday night against a hot shooting McKinnon team, we lost 114-80. Then even though we got a couple of players back for our Sunday game at Keilor, we turned the ball over far too much and the Thunder capitalized with a 106-80 win. Clearly the team needs to improve defensively to be able to compete in this competition, however the exposure many of our young squad is experiencing will be invaluable for them long term. Today we face the Melbourne Tigers who are currently in second place in the Terrill Conference with a 3-1 record. With some of our core players returning from NBL1 duty the night before, we are looking to really take it to Melbourne. We look forward to your ongoing support. Go Sabres! EVAN VALLANCE – Head Coach Tyrone Simos-Primeran (pictured v Hawthorn) had 14 points and 6 rebounds last week v Keilor

Nick Gabsch has had a great start to the VYC season , top scoting with 27 v Keilor (pictured v Hawthorn)
