SOUTHERN SABRES v KNOX RAIDERS

L

ast weekend we played Dandenong in our first home game, in front of a great crowd. We allowed Dandenong to get to the foul line too often and especially on ‘and 1’ situations. That coupled with 17 turn overs and 14 second chance points put us behind the eight ball. However, our offence kept us in the game for long periods until the foul count started working against us, meaning that we could never quite bridge the gap going down by 10, 89 - 99. This weekend sees us play Knox, a very well coached team who have one win over a very good team in Kilsyth and a narrow loss against Geelong. We had a very competitive practice match against Knox just before the season started, and we match up well with their roster. With a great week of training and tightening up the lessons learnt from our first three games, it will see us be in position to play a good game and a chance for our second win of the season. PREVIEW: Round 3 NBL1 – MEN

SOUTHERN SABRES v KNOX RAIDERS

L

ast week the team took some positive steps forward and came close to knocking off league powerhouse Dandenong. Tonight, we welcome league newcomers Knox Raiders to the Sabredome, for what should be an

exciting battle. Last Saturday it was pleasing to see our inexperienced Sabre squad take it to a very talented and big Rangers team in front of our home fans. Reduced turnovers, defensive execution, and a better overall mental engagement, effort and team first attitude, were contributing factors to the orange and blue taking their opponents down to the wire. After building a ten-point lead in the second quarter, Dandenong clawed their way back, and with scores tied going into the final term, it was disappointing to end up dropping this one. Getting superstar Dave Barlow back for his first game of the season was inspirational to those young guys that make up majority of our roster, and his 22 and 10 were sorely needed. Sam McDaniel is showing what a high character athlete he is, putting the team first, as he works through restrictions which are keeping him from performing at his sensational best. Rhys Carter and Jaden Weldon continue to work hard away from the court to get to where they want to be. And it was great seeing Zak Pantelis and Kobe Davies contribute through sheer determination. We host the Raiders this evening, they come to us coached by legendary NBL player Darryl McDonald. Their roster is bolstered by Tall Blacks big man James Hunter, and former NBL players Damon Heuir and Adam Thoseby and Cadarian Raines, a US import who is averaging a double double. Knox is also winless at this point of the season, so we know they will be just as hungry for their first W. Important reminder from all of the staff and athletes; thank you! We cant do this without you the fans. Please remember, our doors are always open to people or domestic teams/ coaches who would like to observe practice, join us for the pregame address, or just invest and enjoy being around our group. We look forward to seeing you all this season. Go Sabres!

A great crowd turned out for NBL1 Sabres home openers last week. Sam McDaniel pictured shooting foul shots in the men’s loss to Dandenong.

Rhys Carter is working hard on and off the court.

PREVIEW: Round 5 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship WOMEN

SOUTHERN SABRES v BULLEEN BOOMERS

L

ast week we faced the undefeated Melbourne Tigers and their 21-2 start showed us why they are the in-form team. We were blown away in the first 5 minutes as they penetrated hard, moved the ball and hardly seemed to miss. Morgan Riley entered the game and immediately the score board began ticking over as we attempted to bridge the enormous gap. The second quarter was much improved as we started to knock down some shots while getting consecutive stops at the other end and by half time we had cut the lead to just 6 points. Unfortunately for us it was Melbourne who jumped out of the blocks and they quickly pushed the lead back into double figures before we again worked our way back and despite being down by 7 points at three quarter time it was still anyone’s game. We threw everything at Melbourne in the last quarter but they were just too good as they came away with a solid 9 point victory and the clear ladder leaders. Morgan (17pts 7rbs 6ass) and Ella Batish (12pts 9rbs) had their best game of the year while Chloe Hicks was again a solid all round contributor (6pts 10tbs 4ass 5stls). This week we face Bulleen who have had a tough start to the season and will be desperate to notch their first win of the season.

Chloe Hicks was a solid all round contributor against Melbourne Tigers.

JO WOOD – Head Coach Morgan Riley led the way with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists last week against Melbourne.

Ella Batish in action against the Tigers (12 points 9 rebounds). SABRES DOUBLE HEADER SAT & SUN – NBL1 Saturday 13th April and VYC Sunday 14th April 2019 11

SABRES DOUBLE HEADER SAT & SUN – NBL1 Saturday 13th April and VYC Sunday 14th April 2019

PREVIEW: Round 5 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship MEN

SOUTHERN SABRES v SHERBROOKE SUNS

U

nfortunately the VYCM had another disappointing loss last week to a strong Nunawading outfit. An 18 point lead midway through the 3rd quarter was erased by the Spectres in the space of 6 mins, as once again we were found wanting on the defensive end of the floor. Nic Gabsch was outstanding again with 40 points, but scoring has not been an issue for this young team as they continually find avenues to keep the scoreboard ticking over. We head this week to Ringwood on Saturday night to face a very strong and athletic Hawks team. Once again, a gametime clash with our NBL1 team will mean we have a different looking team, including the return of Barclay Kaipuke, who is playing his first game back in Sabres colours for a couple of years. On Sunday we get back on our home court with a hopefully a full complement of players to choose from against a Sherbrooke team who have had an up and down start to their season and currently have a 2-4 record. This will be a must win game for us, and hopefully it will be coming off a positive result from the night before. EVAN VALLANCE – Head Coach Tyrone Simos-Primerano had 8 points and 6 rebounds last week.

Nic Gabsch continued his outstanding form with 40 points against Nunawading last week. Samuel Taulapiu had 11 points and led the Sabres rebound count with 9 against the Spectres.
