PREVIEW: Round 4 NBL1 – WOMEN

SOUTHERN SABRES v HOBART HUSKIES

I

n our game against Knox we were disappointed with our performance which boiled down to not following the scout. Once we allowed them to build a lead we started to force and chase the game. The girls fought back in the second and third quarters, however we could not hit the scoreboard after repeated defensive efforts and lost the game 92-67. Lessons learnt that we hope will place us in great shape for our next game against Hobart. We lost to the Huskies in a close first game of the season down there three weeks ago. It was a good game to open the season, which turned on a couple of shots and some poorly timed fouls that put Hobart to the line too often. Both teams are different now with Cayla George’s guest appearances for Hobart having finished. We are now at full strength and after a few more training sessions together and time to gel, we are working hard to get our first home court win. ANDREW POTTER – Head Coach

Rachel Jarry on her way to a game high 17 points (and 7 rebounds).

Sherry Glennie had 14 points and 5 rebounds coming off the bench v Knox.

Amelia Todhunter had 11 points and 7 rebounds last round v Knox. SABRES DOUBLE HEADER SAT & SUN – NBL1 Saturday 27th April and VYC Sunday 28th April 2019 3

PREVIEW: Round 4 NBL1 – MEN

SOUTHERN SABRES v HOBART HUSKIES

T

he Easter break offered our group some well needed rest, and a chance to spend some time together away from the court. Tonight, is our first chance for redemption as we welcome the Hobart Huskies to Melbourne, for what should be an electrifying rematch. Round one saw a depleted Sabres team travel to Hobart for the first game of the season, and a seesawing affair led to an 8-point Huskie win. Last round saw our undersized, inexperienced Sabres drop one to Knox who boast one of the more experienced teams, with one of the biggest front courts in the competition. Even after winning the free-point battle (second chance points, points off turnovers, and freethrows), a series of mental errors, and giving up 44 points in the paint, meant that Knox was able to put 100 points on the board. But 8/32 from 3, and 18/32 from the charity stripe meant the Sabres continued to struggle to shoot the ball, and 78 points saw the orange and blue move to 0-4 on the year. Sam McDaniel put up a double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists), and Dave Barlow contributed 24 and 9, plus it was great to see some positive guard play from Rhys Carter (18 points), and Kobe Davies (2/2 from 3).

We host the Hobart Huskies this evening, they come to us coached by former Sabres CEO Mark Chivers. They are in a similar situation to Southern Sabres with a very limited budget, and a young core, due to the inclusion of the Southern Huskies (NZNBL) to their program. Their roster is bolstered by import Jalen Adams who is averaging 19 points and 5.6 rebounds, SEABL veteran Matthiang Muo (38% from 3), and explosive and talented young guard Jack Stanwix. Plus, another front court line-up that towers over the Sabres in Zac White (201cm), Jacob Richards (199cm), and Matthew Young (201cm). After going close in round one the Sabres are eager for vengeance, but Hobart will be filled with confidence, as both teams look to improve on tough starts to the year. Important reminder from all of the staff and athletes; thank you! Without you the fans, we can’t do this. The atmosphere the past two home games was fantastic, we hope that continues! Please remember, our doors are always open to people or domestic teams/coaches who would like to observe practice, join us for the pregame address, or just invest and enjoy being around our group. We look forward to seeing you all this season. Go Sabres! NATHAN COOPER-BROWN – Head Coach

David Barlow is leading the way for the Sabres this season (24 points and 9 rebounds v Knox).

Sam McDaniel had a double double v Knox last round.

PREVIEW: Round 6 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship WOMEN

SOUTHERN SABRES v DIAMOND VALLEY EAGLES

T

he Sabres VYC women faced a Bulleen team searching for their first win of the season while we were looking to rebound from our loss last week. In a complete contrast to last week we jumped out of the blocks to take a 31-14 lead at quarter time on the back of some great outside shooting from Morgan Riley and some strong inside work from Sophie Van Vliet and Alice Humble. Full court defense was a big focus for us this week and as the game progressed we certainly improved our intensity in this area with Caitlin Farmer and current league leader in steals Chloe Hicks leading the way. Everyone that came on demonstrated increased intensity up the defensive end and when we combined that with our hard running and great ball movement we were able to win all 4 quarters to come away with an easy 97-51 win. The scoring was spread across the team with 9 players hitting the score sheet as we registered an impressive 22 assists. This week we have 2 big games with Bendigo away on Saturday and Diamond Valley at home on Sunday. Both teams are in our pool and battling it with us out for finals positions so wins will be crucial and hard to come by.

Sophie Van Vliet had 18 points and was strong on the boards with 16 rebounds.

JO WOOD – Head Coach

Morgan Riley top scored with 22 points in the 97-51 win over Bulleen last round.

Alice Humble was strong inside v Bulleen last week. (15 points and 11 rebounds).

SABRES DOUBLE HEADER SAT & SUN – NBL1 Saturday 27th April and VYC Sunday 28th April 2019

PREVIEW: Round 6 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship MEN

T

he VYCM team split their games last weekend. On the road at Ringwood the boys were jumped early 19-2 and were never really able to recover eventually losing 92-63. Returning to our home floor on Sunday with a full squad to choose from against a struggling Sherbrooke team, the boys were fired up early looking for their first ‘official’ win of the season. We dominated the four quarters with a 120-66 win. Our three returning NBL1 players combined for 72 points (Kingsley Box 27, Nic Gabsch 25 and Kobe Davies 20). One of the unsung heroes of the weekend though was Tomo Owens who is earning himself a regular spot in the rotation with his dogged and determined play no matter what the circumstance of the game is. Looking ahead to our games post Easter, we have a tough away game against league pace setters Eltham, before returning home on Sunday to face a McKinnon Cougars team that mauled a young outfit only a few weeks ago, so there will definitely be some added incentive to not allow that to happen again and to try and start to build some momentum.

SOUTHERN SABRES v MCKINNON COUGARS Kingsley Box had 27 points last round v Sherbrooke Suns.

EVAN VALLANCE – Head Coach Nic Gabsch in action on his way to 25 points and 7 rebounds.
