Accolade for SBA coach NBL1 men’s coach promoted to major Basketball Victoria role
N
athan Cooper-Brown, the Southern Sabres’ NBL1 Men’s Head Coach, has been appointed Basketball Victoria’s High-Performance Head Coach for Victoria Country Men. Nathan will continue his role with the Sabres while regularly travelling to regional satellites such as Geelong, Bendigo and Ballarat and running State selection camps when needed. “This new BV position will complement my NBL1 coaching at the Sabres where we are really starting to see some positives in the players,” Nathan said. “For Victoria Country, I’ll be both managing and coaching the Under-12s up to the Under-18s. These players are high performance athletes who are in a pathway to represent country Victoria at national championships and then go on and represent Australia at either Under-17s or Under-19s international teams.” Nathan replaces Justin Schueller who has been in the role since 2012. Both Justin Schueller (head coach) and Nathan Cooper-Brown (assistant coach) are part of the coaching team of the Australian Crocs Under-17 team, which has a strong history in the World Cup. This latest BV appointment is recognition of Nathan’s skills, talent and success in the senior ranks of coaching and team management. “It’s very exciting to be an integral part of such an important pathway for players who aspire to play in the NBL and represent Australia. My coaching career really seems to be taking off since the beginning of this year,” said Nathan. Nathan Cooper-Brown was previously with Basketball Ballarat where he spent three years as Athlete and Coach Development Manager and two years working with Ballarat’s South East Australian Basketball League team as Assistant and Head Coach. During his time with the Ballarat Miners, Nathan Cooper-Brown helped lead the team to consecutive top four finishes and finals appearances. The new NBL1, which commenced late March, is the semiprofessional premier league in Australia after the NBL and WNBL and showcases Australia’s best emerging talent and many other professional players. The NBL1 strengthens the pathway from the junior levels through to the NBL, WNBL and ultimately the Boomers and Opals, helping develop the next generation of international players.

PREVIEW: Round 9 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship WOMEN
SOUTHERN SABRES v RINGWOOD
A
tough away game last week for the Youth League women who faced a Sunbury team fresh off an upset – after beating ladder leaders Melbourne Tigers the previous day. With no team leading by more than 9 points, seven lead changes and five times scores were tied, it was certainly a close game the whole way through. While we had glimpses of tough defence and great ball movement on offence, Sunbury applied consistent pressure defensively to force us into 28 turnovers while also creating many second opportunities through their offensive rebounding effort. Our girls hung tough and once again we had too many contributors and were able to come away with a 6 point win. Chelsea Bransden (16 pts 9 rbs & 8 stls) once again flirted with a triple double, while Chloe Hicks (15pts 7rbs) and Sophie Van Vliet (10 pts 6rbs) provided great support. Mia Cigognini (8pts 11 rbs) and Alice Humble (7 pts 11rbs) were not just massive on the boards but along with Caitlin Farmer were key defensive players. This week we play competition leaders Ringwood who suffered their first loss of the season last week and will be keen to get back on the winners list. We will once again be needing solid contributions across the board if we are to challenge this talented unit. JO WOOD – Head Coach
Chloe Hicks had 15 points and 7 rebounds in the away win over Sunbury last weekend Alice Humble was massive on the boards with 11 rebounds v Sunbury (7 points)
Chelsea Bransden continued her great form last weekend with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 8 steals in Sunbury.

PREVIEW: Round 9 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship MEN
SOUTHERN SABRES v RINGWOOD
T
he VYCM face a tough double header this weekend on the back of another loss away to Waverley. Down by just 1 point at half time, we really struggled to score the ball against the athletic Falcons unit and their zone defence in the second half, and wound up losing 86-65. Mitchell Stewart, standing in as captain played a great game for the Sabres with 19 points and 8 rebounds, and it was also great to see a pair of 16 year old players from the U/18s team both hit the scoreboard in Joe Lubarsky and Kaylan Kitto. We face third place Ringwood at home this Saturday night, and once gain we are going to deal with their great length and athleticism on the defensive end in order to secure a victory. Ball security will be a major focus as we’ve had back-to-back 20+ turnover games which has fuelled much of our opponents offence. We then play away to Melbourne on Sunday at MSAC. SABRES DOUBLE HEADER SAT & SUN – VYC Saturday 18th May 2019 and NBL1 Sunday 19th May
PREVIEW: Round 7 NBL1 – WOMEN
SOUTHERN SABRES v ELTHAM WILDCATS
T
his Sunday’s game against the Eltham Wildcats is our fifth game in 15 days. We also welcome Eltham to our stadium for our first ever NBL1 clash with them. Having lacked the consistency of effort over the last couple of games we are hoping to gain our first home win of the season through greater effort and greater dedication to collective team play. We’re looking to our leaders Rachel Jarry and Tenaya Phillips to show the way and for our young stars Ella Batish, Gabby Newton and Morgan Riley to step up. The loss of Amelia Todhunter to injury has been keenly felt over the past few weeks, so our whole team needs to step up. The season seems to have flown by pretty quickly and after this weekend we will be half way through. Our win-loss record isn’t an indication of how good we can be. We need to keep working hard and the wins will start to come.
Ella Batish had 13 points and 5 rebounds v Nunawading
ANDREW POTTER – Head Coach
Tenaya Phillips had 12 points last weekend in the loss to Nunawading.
Racel Jarry continues to lead the way each week for the Sabres NBL1 Women. SABRES DOUBLE HEADER SAT & SUN – VYC Saturday 18th May 2019 and NBL1 Sunday 19th May 11

NEWS STORY NBL1 – MEN
SOUTHERN SABRES v ELTHAM WILDCATS
Sabres welcome Ryan Beisty The Southern Sabres have announced the signing of 6’5” power forward Ryan Beisty. Coming off his senior year at Regis University (Colorado), Beisty started all 30 games for the Rangers, and was the third highest scorer with 269 points whilst shooting at 47.9 percent from the field. He made 48 of 107 three-point attempts (44.9 percent) and averaged a team-high seven rebounds per game. Sabres Head Coach Nathan Cooper Brown was effusive in his praise for Beisty. “We are very excited to welcome Ryan to the Sabredome. He is a high character, high IQ athlete, that we think will bring value to both the court and our community. Ryan is able to pass the ball from his position, stretch the floor with his three-point shooting, and help our inexperienced and undersized roster on the glass. “Gaining some roster depth, particularly in the forward position, has been a goal for the club for months. We are delighted that Ryan has chosen to put on the orange and blue, demonstrating his passion and work ethic to springboard the next stage of his career. We look forward to our fans coming out to see Ryan and all our Sabres this coming weekend.” Beisty will get the opportunity to suit up for his first NBL1 games this coming round, when the Sabres take on Ringwood Hawks (Saturday night away), and Eltham Wildcats (home on Sunday).
