SOUTHERN SABRES v ALBURY WODONGA BANDITS
H
aving freshened up over the long weekend, a training run against the under 16 boys helped get us back up to speed and then a good training session Thursday got us ready for Dandenong. We also welcomed back Amelia Todhunter which helped cover the loss of DeeJay who broke her leg playing football the day after playing her 100th game for Sabres up at Bendigo. We had lost to Dandenong earlier in the year in a high scoring shoot out. Our aims were improved defensive awareness and to control the pace of the game as they where down several players due to starting college and Australian 3x3 duties. After coming back from 9 down with five minutes to go we had a 2 point lead with 12 seconds when they ran a play that resulted in a made 3 point shot putting Dandenong up by 1 with 1.1 seconds left. Time out, draw a play, execute the play and win and thanks to the five on the floor that is what happened, Ella made the basket and we won by a point. This week’s game against the Albury gives us the chance to show our home fans how much we have improved as a group. We need to show the same commitment to our goals and consistency from one week to the next. It will also be a treat for our fans to have the great Lauren Jackson in the house. ANDREW POTTER – Head Coach
Ella Batish hit a buzzer beater to get the win over Dandenong last weekend (70-69), on her way to a game high 21 points. (pictured here v Eltham) Tenaya Phillips had 18 points and 3 rebounds v Dandenong.
Amelia Todhunter had 10 rebounds in her return to the court last weekend at Dandenong.

PREVIEW: Round 11 NBL1 – MEN
SOUTHERN SABRES v ALBURY WODONGA BANDITS
I
t’s good to be home! After a muchneeded mid-season break for the longweekend, the Sabre men returned to the floor for rivalry round at Dandenong last Saturday night. This game was highlighted with the long-awaited return of Melbourne United stars David Barlow and Sam McDaniel to the court after significant time on the sidelines due to injury. With Jamie Batish (injury), Rhys Carter (holiday) and Jaden Weldon (holiday), all still unavailable, Barlow and McDaniel were joined with the cast of plucky undersized, and inexperienced Sabres that have been passionately holding up the team all year. And in a round dedicated to competition the Rangers v Sabres match didn’t disappoint. A double overtime thriller saw the orange and blue victorious and singing the team song once again. An offensive barrage was highlighted by the Sabres shooting including 51% from the field, 23/45 (51%) from 3, and 25/28 (89%) from the charity stripe. Some wonderful individual performances from Nic Gabsch team high 32 points, two double-doubles from David Barlow (30 points and 10 rebounds), Sam McDaniel (22 points and 12 assists), and a solid outing from point guard Tom O’Brien (11 points and 6 assists). This evening, we welcome the Albury/Wodonga Bandits. The Bandits currently sit 15th out of 18 teams on 5 wins and 8 losses. They have an incredibly talented and deep roster, and the club would be disappointed with a record that doesn’t reflect their faculty. They come to the Sabredome on the back of a tough loss to the Bendigo Braves last week, and they’ll be using their athletic line-ups and foreign talent to try and make amends tonight. Albury is bolstered by imports Ken-Jah Bosely (22.8ppg), and Torren Jones (20.3ppg and 13.6rpg) who lead their attack, along with SEABL/NBL1 stalwart Deba George (16.4ppg) continuing to be their pivotal leader. The Sabres will have to replicate the strong shooting of last week but must improve on the defensive end, with the Bandits coming in with the 5th best offence in the league, that defensive execution will be the determining factor if we are to find success on our home floor.
Important reminder from all of the staff and athletes; thank you! Without you the fans, we can’t do this. The atmosphere this season has been fantastic, we hope that continues! Please remember, our doors are always open to people or domestic teams/coaches who would like to observe practice, join us for the pregame address, or just invest and enjoy being around our group. We look forward to seeing you all this season. GO SABRES! NATHAN COOPER-BROWN – Head Coach Sam McDaniel returned to the court at Dandenong with 22 points and 12 assists.
David Barlow had 30 points and 10 rebounds in the double overtime win over Dandenong last week.

SOUTHERN SABRES v KNOX
L
ast weekend we played Altona in a game that may decide final ladder positons. They jumped out of the blocks to take an 11 point lead into quarter time as we struggled defensively to contain them. The last five minutes of the second quarter we really stepped up our intensity to cut a 14 point margin to 4 on the back of some really great team defence and some great shooting from Mia Cigognini and Chloe Hicks. Unfortunately we let our intensity slip at the start of the 3rd quarter and we quickly found ourselves down again by 10 points. Abby Riggs and Caitlin Farmer had an immediate impact on the defensive end and with Alice Humble dominating the boards we finished the quarter with an 8-2 run to to be down by 3 at the last break. The last quarter was tight the whole game but an amazing defensive effort to keep Altona to 8 for the quarter (including a score on the buzzer) allowed us to come away with a 2 point win on the back of some clutch foul shooting from Chelsea Bransden in the last minute. Chloe (21 pts, 6 rbs, 6ass, 8 stls) and Mia (14 pts 8 rbs 3 ass 4 stls) were absolutely brilliant while Alice (6pts 13 rbs 5 blks) was also a key contributor up both ends. Even though they didn’t fill the stats sheet, the defensive pressure applied by Caitlin and Abby (6 def boards) was no doubt an also important factor in the win. This weekend we face a tough double with top team Nunawading away on Saturday night before a home game Sunday against last year’s grand-finalists in Knox. Both games will be a big test for us and with every game crucial for finals positions we will need to make sure we bring our energy and intensity for all 8 quarters.
Chloe Hicks had a fantastic game v Altona at home last week (21 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 8 steals).
JO WOOD – Head Coach Alice Humble was a key contributor at both ends against Altona.
Mia Cigognini had 14 points and 8 rebounds in the 2 point win over Altona last weekend.

PREVIEW: Round 13 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship MEN
SOUTHERN SABRES v RINGWOOD
T
he VYCM team split their two games last weekend with a great team win over Waverley on Saturday night and a tough loss to a much more physical Dandenong team on Sunday at their place. The team returns home to face Knox on Sunday in what should be another physical encounter as you would expect coming up against a Raiders team. The team has been coming together really well over the latter part of the season, and we hope to put forward strong team performance on our home floor this round. EVAN VALLANCE – Head Coach
Tyrone Simos-Primerano in action Saturday night v Waverley (18 points and 4 steals). He also had 18 points and 5 assists v Dandenong on Sunday. Callan McDonald had a combined 29 points and 16 rebounds across the two games last weekend.
Mitch Stewart had 16 points and 6 rebounds v Waverley at home last weekend.
