PREVIEW: Round 14 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship WOMEN
SOUTHERN SABRES v HUME CITY
L
ast weekend was one to forget for the VYC women as we had consecutive losses for the first time this season. Saturday night we faced top-of-the-table Nunawading and we were just no match for their intensity (and maybe their height). They had us down 20 points in the first quarter and the onslaught continued for the next two quarters. Even though we won the last, Nunawading came away with a 36-point win. Sunday we backed up against a Knox team down on numbers but ready to fight to the end. Once again we struggled to play with the required intensity for any considerable length of time and with ten lead changes and scores tied nine times – it was a close game throughout. Unfortunately we came up short with Knox recording a 2 point win (63-61). This week we face Hume City and we will be hoping for a much improved effort as we look to bounce back from last weekend, and find some form heading into finals which are only three weeks away.
Ella Batish had a double double v Knox (12 points, 10 rebounds).
JO WOOD – Head Coach
Mia Cigognini had 13 points and 4 rebounds v Knox last Sunday.
Morgan Riley top scored both games last weekend – 10 points v Nunawading Saturday night (5 assists) and 14 points v Knox at home (7 rebounds, 3 assists).

PREVIEW: Round 14 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship MEN
SOUTHERN SABRES v KILSYTH
T
he VYCM men had another great home win on Sunday against Knox 70-64. As expected, it was a very physical game and the type that this team had really struggled with throughout the season, but as some of the younger players are now adjusting to senior basketball better as well as players returning from NBL1 stints, the team looks much better placed to compete on a more consistent level. Sam Taulapiu was outstanding with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks, as was Callum McNamara with a double/double off the bench (13 points, 11 rebounds). This week’s game against 4th placed Kilsyth should be a high scoring affair with both teams playing an uptemp style and the Cobras boasting the leading scorer in the league in Mitch Dielemans (28ppg), who is coming off 45 points and 36 points in his last two games. EVAN VALLANCE – Head Coach
Callum McNamara had a big impact off the bench with 13 points and 11 rebounds against the Raiders.
Sam Taulapiu going hard to the basket on his way to 14 points v Knox (9 rebounds and 4 blocks).
Kobe Davies had 14 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds in a good game v Knox at home last weekend.

PREVIEW: Round 12 NBL1 – WOMEN
SOUTHERN SABRES v GEELONG
I
t was great to have Lauren Jackson in the house for the visiting Albury Wodonga Bandits, but inconsistent application and our inability to slow Albury’s scoring in the paint put us in a hole we were unable to climb out of, eventually losing by 8 points (87-79). This week we have two opportunities to improve and develop and get a couple of wins. Saturday we take on the ladder leading Geelong Supercats at home and on Sunday we take on Waverley at their place. Geelong present a tall assignment having four quality bigs who have all represented Australia at one level or another and if allowed can dominate a game. Our defensive transition and rebounding will need to be on song to create the opportunity for an upset. After the game we farewelled Sam Hill who is off overseas to work. We thank her and wish her well and hope that she might return for next season.
Tenaya Phillips had 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists against the Bandits
ANDREW POTTER – Head Coach
Last weekend we farewelled Samara Hill.
Rachel Jarry’s 30 points and 10 rebounds were a highlight in last weekend’s loss to Albury Wodonga.

PREVIEW: Round 12 NBL1 – MEN
F
SOUTHERN SABRES v GEELONG
our-time NBL champion David Barlow says staying in game shape by playing NBL1 has been “crucial”, as he looks to build on his revival with Melbourne United last season. After enjoying a strong campaign with United, where Barlow averaged 11.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, the 35-year-old turned to NBL1 and the Southern Sabres to ensure he didn’t lose any momentum gained during the NBL season. Despite the Sabres languishing in 18th position on the ladder, Barlow has had a fruitful individual season, amassing 24 points and nine rebounds per game. After recommitting with Melbourne for the 2019/20 NBL season, Barlow has explained why suiting up for the Sabres has been vital. “It’s been good for me – I always enjoy just continuing to play in the offseason and I love playing the game obviously, so I just want to keep playing,” Barlow told the United website. “I think also to take time off for me has always been a recipe for disaster in terms of getting out of game shape. The more time I take off, the more that becomes noticeable. “The offseason is always very important for me to be in the weight room just really getting strong and preparing my body for the gruelling NBL season with the amount of training, games and travel we do – it’s crucial for me so that’s always a priority.” Barlow has been in hot form recently, recording 30 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals against Dandenong two weeks ago and 25 points and eight rebounds against Albury-Wodonga this past weekend.
Coach Nathan Cooper-Brown has had Barlow playing at centre during the campaign, a spot he wouldn’t occupy in the larger NBL. However, the recent addition of Nicolas Tata has given Cooper-Brown more creativity with how to utilise Barlow. “Tata is a big athlete, so I probably might go back to the four and other positions a little bit,” Barlow said. “I had been playing pretty much strictly the five because I was our biggest guy and obviously it’s a smaller league than the NBL is, but I don’t really care what position I play.” The Sabres battle Geelong Supercats on Saturday, before travelling to Waverley to play the Falcons on Sunday, in round 12. NBL1 Media – nbl1.com.au David Barlow continued his good form with 25 points and 8 rebounds v Albury Wodonga Bandits at home last weekend.
