WELCOME Dear SBA Members, Welcome to another season of Big V basketball. Our VYC teams have been working hard over the pre-season and it’s now time for the women and men to put it on show. Head Coach of the VYC Women Jo Wood returns for another season, keen to lead her girls to their third Championship in a row. Evan Vallance makes his head coaching debut for the VYC Men. Both teams have undergone some major personnel changes over the pre-season. With experienced players moving on, younger Sabres junior have stepped up. We look forward to seeing them develop over the course of the season! Craig Weir SBA CEO ENQUIRIES. SOUTHERN SABRES v HAWTHORN MAGIC
T
his year the youth women have a mix of old and new as we attempt to win the championship for the 3rd consecutive year. The core of last years group will be back but a lot more will be asked of Chloe Hicks, Mia Cigognini, Sophie Van Vliet, Morgan Riley and Alice Humble as they attempt to fill the leadership void left by the departure of Izzy Shea, Cassie Hill and Meg Ragauskas. Ella Batish will again be a focal point when she is available, while Caitlin Farmer has just returned from college and we will be hoping her speed on defense will provide real headaches for the oppositions guards. Emma Crees and Chelsea Bransden have joined the club with Emma’s outside shooting and Chelsea’s aggressive penetration and attack on the ball key additions to our team. Youngster Abby Riggs has impressed throughout the pre-season as she looks to solidify her place in the team. With a good mix of inside outside and a team capable of applying great pressure defensively this team could well be in the mix again come finals time. Well, hopefully anyway! JO WOOD – Head Coach

SABRES DOUBLE HEADER – VYC Sunday 17th March 2019
PREVIEW: Round 1 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship MEN
A
s we look ahead to the start of the 2019 Victorian Youth Championship Men season the team has seen a major overhaul of personnel from the previous year, with a senior core of players no longer with the team for a variety of reasons. The team will only return two regular players from the last couple of seasons in new captain Ben Charnley and Mitchell Stewart, whose leadership will be needed to navigate a young group through a tough fixture. With a loss of personnel comes a crop of young talent from our 18s VC Championship winning team in Tyrone Simos-Primerano, Kingsley Box, Samuel Taulapiu and Callum MacNamara, as well as Tomo Owens who was also part of our 18s program. Some of these boys may also find themselves playing a role with our NBL1 program as the club attempts to promote some of exciting ex-juniors into our senior team. Some new faces to the team and this year are Callan McDonald from Hawthorn as well as Jeff Dalman (McKinnon) and Ryan Heath (year off) who were both part of our Sabres junior representative program up until 18s. A couple of players to watch for this season are Nic Gabsch, who is returning to Sabres after a Junior College stint in the US, and he has already shown early in the preseason he could be a big offensive weapon for our team this season. Also Kobe Davies who has progressed through our junior ranks to play a few Youth League games last season, to now being a regular on the NBL1 training floor, and with his electrifying speed and unmatched attitude and work ethic, he has really set himself up to have a great season. Although the pre-season has had some varying challenges, the team looks to be coming together nicely on the eve of opening round. What it lacks in size and experience, will hopefully be made up for in effort, energy and attitude.
