WELCOME Welcome back to Round 2 of the men’s and women’s VYC season for 2019! Both teams split their opening round double headers 1-1 and will be looking to go 2-0 over Round 2. After disappointing losses away against Kilsyth, the teams bounced back against Hawthorn on Sunday posting impressive victories. The men were in a high scoring shootout winning 137-125 while the women had a much tougher contest, but emerged victorious 63-53. We had great performances from SBA juniors, particularly Nic Gabsch, Kingsley Box, Emma Crees and Morgan Riley. With school holidays coming up, we have released our Term 1 April school holiday program on our website and the back page of this booklet. These are great value for SBA families. We are looking to have bumper 3 on 3 tournaments with great prizes and a “street” feel to proceedings. Many thanks to our sponsors and partners for their ongoing support. Good luck to both teams today! Craig Weir SBA CEO ENQUIRIES. PREVIEW: Round 2 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship WOMEN

SOUTHERN SABRES v WAVERLEY FALCONS

T

he VYC Women had a tough opening weekend to start the season. Saturday night we faced a very energetic Kilsyth team ready to start the season strongly after being eliminated in the first round of the finals last year. For the first three quarters there was not much in it as we took a 1 point lead into the final quarter. Unfortunately the last quarter was all Kilsyth as we failed to contain their penetration and they were able to capitalise with some excellent outside shooting. Emma Crees and Morgan Riley (13 points) were our top scorers in the loss, while Mia Cigognini had a great game with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Sunday we backed up against Hawthorn and the girls jumped out of the blocks with a 10-1 start to get things going. Despite some challenges from Hawthorn we came away with a solid 63-53 point win. Morgan (16 pts), Emma (11 pts) and Ella Batish (10pts) again our top scorers but some great all round contributions from Chloe Hicks (8 pts 4 rbs 4ass 5 stls), Chelsea Bransden (8pts 10rbs 3stls) and Mia 9 (8 pts 8rbs 3 stls). This weekend we have another tough double with an away game Saturday against our nemesis Dandenong before a home game Sunday against another finals contender in Waverley.

SABRES DOUBLE HEADER – VYC Sunday 24th March 2019

PREVIEW: Round 2 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship MEN

SOUTHERN SABRES v BULLEEN BOOMERS

T

he Southern Sabres Youth team return to their home floor this week against Bulleen after splitting their two games in the opening round of the season, with a loss at Kilsyth and a home win against Hawthorn. At Kilsyth, our young and inexperienced team struggled against a tough defensive Cobras side and turned the ball over far too much to be in the contest. Nic Gabsch was a standout offensively for us, with a game high 32 points, and a few of the Under 21 boys filling in gained valuable experience of what the next level up holds. Sunday’s game against Hawthorn was a high scoring affair, with many calls leading to foul trouble for the Magic and plenty of work on the free throw line for us. We attempted a whopping 56 foul shots and connected on 44 of them – after only managing 2 makes from 8 attempts the night before. Nic Gabsch was on a heater again and clocked up 38 points, young gun Kingsley Box poured in 30 points in his Youth League debut and Callan McDonald double/doubled against his former team with 16 points and 10 rebounds. With Bulleen coming off a loss to Knox in their opening round game and hungry for their first win, we expect this to be a tough and physical encounter as both teams will want to keep themselves above .500 early this season. EVAN VALLANCE – Head Coach

Nic Gabsch had a game high of 38 points against Hawthorn

Kingsley Box had 30 points in his VYC debut against Hawthorn

Callan McDonald shooting foul shots against Hawthorn (16 points and 10 rebounds)
