PREVIEW: Round 7 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship WOMEN
SOUTHERN SABRES v BALLARAT RUSH
M
ixed results for the YL women this year with possibly our worst performance of the year against Bendigo and then without a doubt our best half of basketball for the year. Saturday we headed up the highway to face a tough Bendigo unit and while we jumped out of the blocks quickly Bendigo pegged us back to take a 3 pt lead at quarter time. The second quarter saw Bendigo extend their lead before a late charge to end the half saw us up by 2. The second half was all Bendigo as we struggled to match their intensity and they ran away with an 8 pt win. Caitlin Farmer easily our best with 12 points and excellent ball pressure on defence. After our lack of intensity on Saturday our focus was on energy, effort and hustle and the girls could not have responded better as we applied relentless full court pressure, ran hard, moved and shot the ball well to take 54-22 lead at half time. Diamond Valley upped their intensity in the second and while our pressure really dropped we were able to come away with a comfortable 14 point win. 20 steals and 23 assists for the game a sign of the intensity on defence and great team play. This weekend we face a tough double with Ballarat at home on Saturday before a clash with the top of the table Melbourne Tigers on Sunday. Both teams are in our pool and so wins against either team will go a long way to securing a finals spot later in the season. JO WOOD – Head Coach
Sophie Van Vliet had 20 rebounds across the two games last round.
Caitlin Farmer had 12 points v Bendigo away last weekend (pictured here v Diamond Valley).
Morgan Riley top scored with 14 points v Diamond Valley at home. SABRES DOUBLE HEADER – VYC Saturday 4th May 2019 3

PREVIEW: Round 7 BIG V – Victorian Youth Championship MEN
SOUTHERN SABRES v DIAMOND VALLEY
T
he VYCM team had another tough double header last weekend and were unable to secure a much needed win, going down to Eltham away on Saturday night 91-68, and then returning home to McKinnon, only to go down 97-83. We host Diamond Valley tonight where once again a clash with our NBL1 team will force us to find some different avenues to score the ball as we attempt to break the slump we are in. With the right attitude and application tonight, this should be a competitive game through all four quarters. EVAN VALLANCE – Head Coach
Tyrone Simos-Primerano had 12 points and 5 rebounds v McKinnon.
Nic Gabsch played NBL1 last Saturday and then top scored with 15pts v McKinnon on Sunday (VYC).
Kobie Davies on his way to 7 points and 6 rebounds v McKinnon.
