PREVIEW: Round 6 NBL1 – WOMEN
SOUTHERN SABRES v NUNAWADING SPECTRES
A
fter playing at home for the last three games the team went on the road to play Melbourne at MSAC and Kilsyth at Kilsyth last weekend. After a tight first quarter against Melbourne we slowly got on top and late in the third quarter we built a 19 point lead. This was on the back of some very good defense that kept one of Melbourne’s stars to 20 points below her season average. We slipped off the pace a little in the last quarter while trying to give players some rest before the Sunday game. We found ourselves 9 points up when a made 3 pointer on the buzzer from Melbourne cut the final margin to 6 points. Sunday presented a great opportunity against Kilsyth, however we slowly succumbed to their physical play and whilst we stayed in the game deep into the third quarter the dam wall eventually broke and we were overrun late in the game, eventually losing 92-60. Tonight we return home to play Nunawading in the ‘Pink Round’ in support of The Breast Cancer Network Australia. Nunawading have been playing well with great contributions across their team. We feel we match-up well against them and with our A game we will get a signature win.
Rachel Jarry had 16 points and 13 rebounds v Melbourne Tigers last weekend.
ANDREW POTTER – Head Coach Ella Batish had 12 points and 8 rebounds v Melbourne Tigers.
Tenaya Phillips had 12 points and 4 rebounds v Melbourne Tigers last weekend. Images are from previous games (not v Melbourne Tigers which was an away game) SABRES DOUBLE HEADER – NBL1 Saturday 11th May 2019 3

SOUTHERN SABRES v NUNAWADING SPECTRES
F
irst off, big thank you to assistant coaches Steve Lunardon and Cal Charge for looking after the group whilst I was away on National duties over the weekend. Being in an environment where we have passionate support staff (including team manager Graeme Ralph) is a huge bonus at this level. Tonight, we welcome league stalwarts the Nunawading Spectres. A team that has consistently been amongst the best for the past number of years. With a group of highly talented veterans, Australian representatives, and future stars, tonight will be a true test. Last round the group faced its second double header of the season with two tough road games; Melbourne Tigers on Saturday night, then perennial favourites Kilsyth Cobras the following day. On Saturday night, after a 16-4 overtime the Sabres ended up on the losing side of an intense battle (113-101). Giving up 38 second chance points, and some less than likely Tigers hitting some big shots down the stretch was the difference. Sam McDaniel and David Barlow both posted double-doubles (25 points, 11 rebounds and 29 points and 11 rebounds respectively). Sunday was a different story all together. The Sabres came together, executed the system and played with a team first attitude that showed what we are actually capable of this season. With stellar performances from Dave Barlow, Nic Gabsch and Jamie Batish, the Sabres knocked off the NBL1 Championship favourites in what the league described as “upset of the season”.
Nic Gabsch made a great contribution with 18 pts v Kilsyth.
Unfortunately, with that win came a loss. Superstar Sam McDaniel (who had just started to show glimpses of the talent that brought him to the Sabre dome), suffered a fractured hand, and will now spend the next 4-6 weeks on the sideline. We feel for Sam, and wish him all the best for his recovery, as he now becomes a leader off the court to this group of young athletes. We host Nunawading this evening. They come to us coached by league icon David Biwer. Their record does not reflect their talent, as they have had a number of their players away this season representing Australia at various 3X3 events. But they are at full strength tonight, so it will warrant our very best efforts. Their roster is bolstered by Simon Conn, Shane McDonald, Tom Wright, Andrew Steel, Lucas Walker, and Dain Swetalla, all proven league stars. Important reminder from all of the staff and athletes; thank you! Without you the fans, we can’t do this. The atmosphere this season has been fantastic, we hope that continues! Please remember, our doors are always open to people or domestic teams/coaches who would like to observe practice, join us for the pregame address, or just invest and enjoy being around our group. We look forward to seeing you all this season. NATHAN COOPER-BROWN – Head Coach
David Barlow had a huge impact in the win over Kilsyth with 24 points and 13 rebounds last weekend.
