Learn your ABCs ART, BOOZE AND CULTURE – AT FIRST THURSDAYS.
On the first Thursday of every month, Cape Town and Johannesburg’s cultural hubs, art galleries, shops and museums throw open their doors until late – usually with admission fees waived – so the public can steep itself in a heady stew of art exhibits, cultural performances, retail therapy, a dash of history and good food and wine. Since 2012 (in Cape Town) and 2015 (in Johannesburg), this monthly event has encouraged locals and visitors to experience these cities’ exceptional art scenes and cultural attractions by foot, singlehandedly smashing the prejudice that these things are reserved for the select few. In fact, anyone with eyeballs and a beating heart can enjoy the kaleidoscope offerings of First Thursdays’ participating establishments. Alternatively, or additionally, if you also enjoy your art and culture in edible/liquid form, there’s a delectable smorgasbord of participating restaurants and bars to choose from, most of which are within easy walking distance of each other. Just keep an eye on those closing times because most galleries retire between 8 and 9 pm. So, hop onto First Thursdays’ website www.first-thursdays.co.za, get yourself a quarterly print map or digital programme, and diarise the dates in your calendar for long, lavish evenings of visual, intellectual and culinary hedonism!
