Jennifer Campbell,
he team at Southern Vines is thrilled to present this, our very first edition of Haute Montres. In this issue, we dive headfirst into the world of luxury as we take a look at some of the latest (and most beautiful) watch and jewellery releases from our favourite premium brands. With fine accessories in mind, we explore the story of Bulgari and discover how this art-inspired brand has grown over the years. For the love of luxury timepieces, we reveal the season's best haute horlogerie trends, and we investigate one of the most exciting collaborations we've seen in a while as Swiss watch brand Hublot joins forces with Michelin-star chefs Yannick AllĂŠno and Andreas Caminada. The striking work showcased at The International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia inspired the story in which we look at the concept of free space and how some of the world's most renowned architect's have interpreted the idea. And when it comes to art, we are proud to say that our continent's scene is thriving as we discover the Joburg Art Fair. Whether you're an avid collector of timepieces, have an interest in art or architecture, or simply love beautiful things, we hope that you'll enjoy the selection of luxury content we have curated with you in mind.

enturies of painstaking craftsmanship and innovation have established empires for those bold and passionate enough to create watches that are a seamless blend of art and engineering.
AN EXPRESSION OF IDENTITY In the realm of watchmaking, boldness and audacity in design are as lauded as elegance and sophistication. Obsessive artisans spend fathomless hours painstakingly crafting timepieces that are not only accurate and long lasting but are also heart-
breakingly exquisite to look at. Fashioned from precious metals and polished crystal, encrusted with gemstones, and often released in limited number ranges, luxury watches make an instantly recognisable personal statement. For those who appreciate practicality, timepieces can be built with intelligent features that enable them to endure punishment without damage or deterioration: built-in compasses, scratch resistant faces, waterproofing, anti-reflective facing, date counters, and more. The modern timepiece can be an incredibly complex, costly, and beautiful thing.

MICROENGINEERING GENIUS More than appearance and aesthetics, modern watches are true marvels of microengineering and an expression of the extraordinary capabilities of the human hand and imagination. Beneath their polished faces lies a world in miniature: several hundreds of intricate, interconnected pieces that require fine tweezers, a magnifying lens, and practised, expert hands to manipulate. This is the world of the watchmaker, where outstanding feats of engineering are achieved, the results of which are not

enormous bridges or skyscraper buildings but rather a living work of art whose tiny insides click steadily with the passing seconds, minutes, and hours of each and every day. Some, in fact, feature over 600 individual parts and, not surprisingly, have price tags that run well into the millions. For the rest of us mere mortals, there’s the practicality of knowing the time of day at the flick of a wrist and the convenience, control, and power that affords us.
INNER CALLING The personal timepiece is alive: its mechanical heart beats 24 hours a day, every day, measuring out our lives in tiny increments of time. It’s an instantly recognisable status symbol, an elegant and sophisticated way of making a statement, and a marvel of
micro-engineering. It’s practical, it’s beautiful, it’s essential, it’s desirable. Humankind has always been afflicted with a voracious need to understand and quantify time. Perhaps, it has imbued us with a sense of control over the relentless passage of this most precious of all the commodities. It has certainly allowed us to establish a more successful foothold on this planet by working with the seasons in the planting of crops, navigating our way to distant lands, and spending our time more cautiously and productively. The modern timepiece may be leaps and bounds ahead of this early calling, but it remains a true testament to human nature’s relentless quest for precision, beauty, and immortality. HM

T
he annual Joburg Art Fair was held for the eleventh time in 2018, and it was a stunning showcase of visual art from around the continent. With exhibitions in four categories — contemporary galleries, solo presentations, limited editions, and art platforms — the event saw local and international collectors, curators, artists, and art patrons converge for one of Africa's most exciting art events. Here are just a few of our favourite features from this year's offering.
A POWERFUL INSTALLATION Sue Williamson's large-scale installation titled Messages from the Atlantic Passage was originally presented at Art Basel in Switzerland last year. It was brought to the Joburg Art Fair this year for its powerful narrative of the movement of slaves across
the Atlantic Ocean. The installation is an extension of the artist's acclaimed Messages from Moat, which listed the slaves brought to the Cape of Good Hope by the Dutch East India Trading Company between 1658 and 1972. Three fishing nets, each of which represents a specific voyage from West Africa across the Atlantic, are filled with glass bottles containing traces of earth and suspended from the ceiling. Each bottle is hand engraved with information of the slaves on the voyage, including their African name, the name given by the slaver, the country of origin, and the age, sex and height of each known individual.

YOUNG ARTISTS
Billie Zangewa - Temporary Reprieve - silk collage
As part of the event, Cartier collaborated with students from the acclaimed Johannesburg-based art school, The Artist Proof Studio, to exhibit work by young artists. All of the works were inspired by the Cartier Love and Juste un Clou collections and included live and interactive printing demonstrations. The result was a collection of artworks that truly embodied the creativity and innovative spirit of the young artists. Cartier country manager Sheila-Anne Johnston described the creations as "daring and utterly original in style". Two winners were announced — Dudu More, who created linocut prints titled Night and Day, each of which is bold and modern designs; and David Madlabane, whose piece, Essence, is a striking linocut with hand colouring. HM
THE ART PRIZE Every year, FNB awards a highly coveted art prize to one of the fair's participating artists, and Cape Town-born artist and activist Haroon Gunn-Salie was this year's recipient. Gunn-Salie is an experimental installation and 'intervention' artist whose work is characterised by the political statements it makes. His 34-piece installation titled Senzenina memorialises the miners killed in the 2012 Marikana massacre and was displayed in an acoustically adapted, dimly lit and immersive space at the Sandton Convention Centre.
THE FEATURED ARTIST The Joburg Art Fair has become increasingly popular for its support of contemporary African art, and in the spirit of recognising new artists, a featured artist is announced annually. 2018's featured artist was Billie Zangewa, who works primarily with raw silk off-cuts to create hand-stitched collages. Her pieces,

As one of the sponsors of the Joburg Art Fair, Cartier exhibited a collection of artworks at their very own Cartier Lounge, which was designed by Jean du Rand Interiors. They also displayed exclusive high-end jewellery creations, including a brand-new slimmer version of the Juste un Clou bracelet. “Just like a piece of art, Cartier creates for clients who are looking for a strongly recognisable design and a distinctive style,” explained Cartier’s Sheila-Anne Johnston.

Embracing Space This year’s International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia is a feast for the senses. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL

T
he past year has seen some distinct trends in the world of architecture — blurred boundaries between inside and out; the continued rise of eco-friendly features; and the use of handmade objects and technologies are among the most prominent. One of the finest architecture showcases, The International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, marks its 16th event this year, and as always, is bursting with exhibitions and installations from some of the world's most respected architects and designers. This year's theme is "freespace", and as such, the exhibition celebrates space while highlighting architecture's generosity of spirit and a sense of humanity. The exhibition offers anyone with a keen interest in architecture endless opportunities for exploration — we've narrowed down a handful of works to look out for.
KENGO KUMA Japanese architect Kengo Kuma has collaborated with PiM.studio Architects to reveal a photography exhibition titled Time Space Existence at this year's event. The exhibition showcases images of the V&A Dundee — Scotland's first design museum, a unique building that was designed as an artificial cliff. The idea, says Kuma, was about "bringing together nature and architecture, and to create a new living room for the city." For Kuma, nature is an essential element in all of his work and the influence is clear in much of his latest work, including the environmentally sophisticated Rolex office building in Dallas, Texas; and the Artlab at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, which is dedicated to the intersection between science and art, and characterised by its use of timber, steel and stone.

KAZUYO SEJIMA AND RYUE NISHIZAWA Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa have joined forces to create a transparent circular installation titled Guruguru at this year's exhibition. With the use of acrylic panels layered and positioned close together, the space works by altering viewers' surroundings as they move around it. The result is the sense of a distorted reality, and a unique perception of space that shifts with changing light, the time of day and the surrounding crowd. The piece is characteristic of much of Sejima and Nishizawa's other work, which is typically transparent and uncluttered, inspired by an interest in the qualities of different kinds of space — their work on the Rolex Learning Centre in Switzerland is another excellent example of these innovative architects' styles.

ROLEX PAVILION The new Rolex Pavilion in the Giardini area of La Biennale is a striking transparent structure with a faceted surface reminiscent of the elegant fluted bezel of the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date, which has been an iconic timepiece since it was first launched in 1945. This year’s Rolex Pavillion at the International Architecture
Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia is a feast for the senses and represents a bold experiment in material use. A courtyard plan was used to spatially organise the pavilion, while elements like arches, an atrium, and a pitched roof were incorporated into the innovative design. Screened walls of glass discs enclose the space, giving the pavilion an abstract and visual texture.

iming. In the professional arena, where titans battle with titans, the difference between the good and the great comes down to mere fractions of time. On the racetracks, champions are defined in seconds. Olympic contests are won in split seconds. The same concept applies to professional kitchens. Michelin star chefs are separated from the pack by their ability to execute their craft with decisive, precision timing. It’s minutes that can result in a collapsed soufflé, an undercooked fish, or an overcooked beef fillet. And it’s seconds that can define the perfect soufflé, fish, or beef fillet. And so, the partnership between a chef and his timepiece is an important one. It’s a fierce relationship forged in the steam-fired chaos of kitchens. Multi-Michelin star chefs, Yannick Alléno and Andreas Caminada, know this and their demand for precision and perfection is met in equal measure by luxury Swiss watch brand Hublot. It is only the right and natural course of things that these powerhouses of their respective worlds have come together to form this partnership. Chef Yannick Alléno and Andreas Caminada, both of whom have been awarded three Michelin stars, are now ambassadors for Hublot.

Hailing from Paris, France, where his flagship restaurant Pavillon Ledoyen is based, the “king of sauces” has opened an impressive portfolio of restaurants in countries all over the world, two of which have achieved three Michelin stars. Chef Yannick has whole-heartedly devoted his work to the reimagining of modern French cuisine, a quest that is rooted in the fertile soils of a mastery of the art of French gastronomy. And his tireless work and fierce innovation has resulted in him becoming a modern icon of gastronomy and a real superstar of the culinary world.

CHEF ANDREAS CAMINADA Three Michelin stars, 19 Gault Millau points, and recipient of the International Eckart Witzigmann Prize for the Art of Cookery 2016, Swiss chef Andreas Caminada is an incredibly accomplished chef whose early habit of winning prestigious awards has persisted to this day. The reputation of this, the youngest three-star chef in Europe, stems in equal measure from his brilliant cuisine and his warm manner, which makes him instantly liked by both guests and colleagues. Chef Andreas’ restaurant Schloss Schauenstein resides within the stoney walls of a 12th-century castle in the valley Domleschg, Switzerland. Foodies from all over the world book months in advance to experience his visionary fare, which foregoes the “fuss” of highend gastronomy in favour of honest, yet vibrant flavours and ingredients. “It’s no secret that I’m an epicurean,” says Hublot CEO, Ricardo Guadalupe. “So, when I discovered Andreas Caminada’s cuisine and when I met him, I was struck by the obviousness and simplicity of his approach. The way in which he makes gastronomy less complicated while imbuing it with even more nobility.”

MASTERY OF FOOD, MASTERY OF TIME Preparation, doors open at 18:00, entrée orders flood the kitchen, then main courses – perfection, perfection, perfection – and finally, desserts. Every minute of the service must go smoothly, customers must never want or wait for anything, the food must be exceptional, and the wine free flowing. Timing is everything. Great chefs are, therefore, not only masters of food alchemy; they are masters of time. And the partnership between Hublot and Michelin-starred chefs Yannick Alléno and Andreas Caminada is the embodiment and the incarnation of this principle. HM

ulgari is a brand internationally renowned for its sense of luxury — from its opulent jewellery and watches to its elegant fashion and lush hotels, it's a name that's synonymous with all things bold and beautiful. But, the global powerhouse comes from humble beginnings and has grown gradually with each decade to reach its current level of lavishness.
THE EARLY DAYS The story begins in 1881 when Sotirio Bulgari (bottom left) left continental Greece and moved to Naples, where he opened a small shop with a partner. Sadly, the shop was robbed, and Sotirio and his partner were forced to move on, this time to Rome. In 1884, Sotirio set up his own shop in Via Sistina, where he fused and cast silver to create accessories, including buckles, oval medallions and girdles inspired by Greek, Byzantine, and Islamic design elements. Ten years later, he was able to open a second store, where he began trading in a wide range of goods, from silver and jewels to antiques and bric-abrac. In 1905, Bulgari opened yet another shop in Via Condotti, which remains the point of reference for all Bulgari stores in the world today. Here, Sotirio increased his range of jewels and accessories, drawing much of his influence from Art Deco and French design trends.

THE EXPANSION OF THE BRAND When Sotirio passed away in 1932, he left his business to his two sons, who continued to grow the company — in 1943 the store was revamped and officially named BVLGARI following the script of ancient Roman epigraphy; in the 40s, a range of jewelled watches in the form of a snake was launched; and the brand rose to international fame in the 50s as celebrities like Audrey Hepburn and Liz Taylor became acquainted with the striking jewellery.
60_360 Bulgari.indd 64
2018/11/15 7:02 AM
By the 60s, Bulgari began to create opulent jewels characterised by their striking colour combinations and sense of volume — qualities for which the brand is still well-known. They also began to set Greek and Roman coins in their jewellery as a reference to their origins. Thanks to growing international fame, the brand was able to expand abroad in the 70s, and shops were opened in New York, Geneva, Monte Carlo, and Paris. In 1977, they launched their very first men's watch, and in 1980, they developed a watch business unit and established Bulgari Time in Switzerland. Part of the Watch Manufacturing Process

BEYOND THE JEWELS As the jewellery line continued to grow, Bulgari diversified even further in the 90s with the launch of their fragrances, as well as a collection of leather goods, including bags, luggage, belts and wallets. With an insatiable passion for luxury, they have since created silk collections, which include ties made with a 'seven-fold' technique — the method
requires twice as much silk as a regular tie and the material (the finest Saglione silk twill) is used both externally and for the lining. We now have access to the designer jewellery, watches, and accessories on our own shores, with the opening of the Bulgari boutique in Sandton two years ago, while their portfolio of fragrances is available at many major retailers nationwide. The Bulgari Hotel in Dubai Left: The Bulgari Suite terrace in Milan
In 2004, they opened their very first hotel in Milan, a space that is perhaps the ultimate tribute to the world of luxury. The five-star hotel is located in Milan's most prestigious cultural area and was designed to match the characteristic Bulgari style. The company went on to open resorts in Bali, Beijing, Dubai, London, and Shanghai, each of which boasts beautiful architecture and luxury features. More hotels are set to open in Moscow, Paris and Tokyo in the next few years, while Tokyo is already home to a Bulgari restaurant, bar, and Dom PÊrignon lounge. Fine handmade chocolates can be found at Il Cioccolato in both Tokyo and Osaka — the exclusive delicacies are displayed like jewels in glass cases as luxurious treats for both the eyes and palate. O
ne of December's birthstones, tanzanite is the only coloured gemstone with its own grading system. With its captivating colour, there's no question as to the stone's striking beauty. But, what exactly is it that makes this stone so special?
THE SOURCE The only known source of tanzanite in the world lies at a small mining site at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, making this sought-after gemstone a thousand times rarer than diamonds. As the story goes, a Masai tribesman came across a cluster of the intense blue crystals and alerted a local fortune hunter named Manuel D’Souza, who originally believed he had been shown a new deposit of sapphires. After further investigation, the discovery turned out to be one of the world's latest known gems — a beautiful stone that was eventually named for its country of origin. The best quality, most deeply saturated tanzanite gems make up just 0.13 per cent of all mined tanzanite available globally and are becoming more and more difficult to uncover. With its mystical blue colour, African heritage, and extreme rarity, the gemstone has earned a reputation for possessing magical powers — it is said to restore spiritual balance and bring good fortune to those that wear it.
THE COLOURS
Lake Manyara National Park in Arusha. Tanzanite was discovered in the Mererani Hills of Manyara Region near the city of Arusha and Mount Kilimanjaro
Discovered in the 1960s, tanzanite has some truly unique properties, one of which is that it is trichroic — the gemstone actually radiates three distinct colours (blue, violet and burgundy) when it is viewed from various angles and lighting conditions. The blue and violet shades are generally the most dominant colours in the stone, while the burgundy colour tends to be more noticeable in gems where violet is the most dominant shade.

2018/11/14 8:24 AM
The colour of the finished stone depends largely on the way in which it has been cut, and vivid blue is the most soughtafter hue. As with all coloured gemstones, the more vibrant and intense the colour, the more valuable the stone. Tanzanite possesses what is often considered one of the natural world's finest shades of blue, and for this reason, the stone has become increasingly coveted.
THE STRUCTURE Tanzanite has a crystalline structure, and as such, is not easy to cut and polish. Triangular, also known as 'trillion' gems are the most valuable, with the round stones coming in at a close second. The resistance of the stones is assessed using the Mohs hardness scale, and with a similar hardness to the quartz family (typically 6.5-7), it is a strong gem. That
said, care should be taken to avoid hard knocks and scratches, and pieces should be carefully stored when not in use. The American Gem Trade Association declared tanzanite a December birthstone in 2002, marking the first change to their birthstone list since 1912. HM

T
hroughout World War Two, the skies were as vicious and bloody a battlefield as the trenches. Fighter jets from opposing air forces clashed overhead, their humming engines, like a swarm of killer bees, striking terror into the hearts of the battle-beaten public. In a war where there existed a clear distinction between good and evil, one fighter jet, in particular, became a hero of the people and of the brave air force men who fought in them. This marvel of engineering was called the Supermarine Spitfire, and it was praised for its exceptional performance, resilience, and speed. Now, just over seven decades after the last mortar was fired in the name of an atrocious war; the Spitfire is once again being honoured for its role in quelling the forces that sought

to overwhelm a continent with their depraved ideologies. Only, this time, this British aircraft has a far less gruesome task at hand, and it’s around-the-world flight in what is being called the “The Longest Flight” expedition.
ICONIC DESIGN AND A FEAT OF ENGINEERING The Spitfire was designed by Supermarine Aviation Works’ chief designer R. J. Mitchell, and in 1943 his design was realised in metal. Its original mandate was to be a short-range, highperformance interceptor aircraft for the Royal Air Force and the other Allied countries that fought in the war. What set this single-seat fighter aircraft apart from its contemporaries and its fiercest opponent, the German Messerschmitt, was its fierce performance, which gave the Allied forces the upper edge in the air. Today, of course, the Spitfire is retired from service, although it continues to be popular among enthusiasts. Only 54 remain airworthy, and many more languish in aviation museums around the world. The “Silver Spitfire – The Longest Flight” expedition is putting this aircraft – which was a truly visionary work of art and engineering at the time it was built – back into the sky where it belongs. And it’s doing it to honour and pay homage to this iconic British plane.

TRAVEL ITINERARY The Spitfire that has been chosen for the ambitious around-the-world flight, covering 43,000 kilometres in the process, has been painstakingly restored and finished in a spectacular silverchrome; hence the name “Silver Spitfire”. Early 2019, the public will get their first chance to see the beautifully restored aircraft, and then, in the Northern Hemisphere’s summer, it will depart from London and spend the next few months circumnavigating the globe. The Silver Spitfire is set to visit a staggering 30 countries, starting in the United Kingdom, flying over Canada and into the United States, followed by South East Asia, India, the Middle East, and then back to London. She will also be gracing the runways of several countries that have never before seen this kind of aircraft on their tarmac. The grand expedition was the brainchild of Steve BoultbeeBrooks and Matt Jones who are the founders of the Boultbee Flight Academy in the south of England. Luxury Swiss watch manufacturer, IWC Schaffhausen, which has more than 80 year’s of history manufacturing watches for pilots, has been announced as the project’s main sponsor and partner.
A TIMELESS MARVEL OF ENGINEERING The iconic and timeless Spitfire will once again be taking to the skies, and while its guns have thankfully been retired, its fearsome reputation for speed and endurance will be going full throttle. Says Christoph Grainger-Herr, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen: “More than any other aircraft, the Spitfire symbolises man's dream of flying. She is a masterpiece of engineering, who was born ahead of her time and who continues to dazzle with her iconic design.” HM

he UX name is derived from the design team’s guiding concept and describes the vehicle’s mission: Urban + X-over (crossover) = UX. As Lexus’ first compact crossover, the UX joins its larger NX and RX brothers to complete a powerful SUV and crossover range that fully expresses the pillars on which the brand has been transformed: brave design, exhilarating performance, imaginative technology and takumi superior craftsmanship.
EXTERIOR DESIGN AND AERODYNAMICS Lexus designers created an overall design theme combining strength with refinement and style with functionality. The spindle grille, though sharing its basic shape with other Lexus models, is unique to the UX. It features a new mesh pattern with individual elements that gradually change in shape as they radiate out from the central Lexus emblem. The grille creates an intriguing threedimensional form that appears to change with the viewing angle. The vehicle’s basic form flows out from the lines of the spindle grille to envelop the cabin. Crisp, prominent sculpted surfaces, a dramatically flared front and rear wings reflect strength, while an aerodynamic profile, large wheels pushed to the corners and a bold front fascia create the agile stance. Takumi (Japanese for “artisan”) modellers worked with design and engineering teams on all exterior surfaces. Their work was crucial to refining surfaces down to onehundredth of a millimetre, pushing the boundaries for what could be produced in the body-stamping presses.

INTERIOR DESIGN: A NEW KIND OF LEXUS LUXURY From its inception, Lexus has drawn on Japanese traditions in craftsmanship and hospitality to infuse its vehicles with a unique sense of contemporary luxury. Lexus designed the UX cabin to evoke the feel of a dynamic, luxury sedan, but with the higher seating position and versatility desired in a crossover. From the driver’s seat, the upper section of the instrument panel appears to extend out beyond the windshield into the wings. The result gives the driver an excellent field of vision and a clear sense of the vehicle’s dimensions and tyre placement. When viewed from outside the vehicle, the hood appears to connect directly to the instrument panel through the windshield. Typical of Lexus, the UX offers a quiet driving experience, thanks to the high-strength structure and optimal placement of specially designed sound-absorbing and insulating materials throughout the body.
INTUITIVE CONTROLS AND TOUCH INTERFACE The UX instrument panel design combines unique Lexus traits and intuitive technology. A 7-inch TFT LCD display meter digitally
creates realistic, analogue gauges in a three-dimensional space. The Lexus Remote Touch Interface (RTI) with haptic interface in the UX is designed to feel as familiar to use as a smartphone. The RTI utilises intuitive operations, such as double tapping and flicking, to mimic common phone gestures. Frameless construction eliminates edges, and a special coating on the touchpad surface lets fingers easily slide over it while minimising the appearance of fingerprints. Touchpad surface haptic vibrations indicate to the user when the cursor is moved, making it easier to align with the desired function button. A switch at the base of the touchpad can call up an operation screen with related functions, such as air conditioning and navigation,
enabling easier access without going through menus. In a unique touch of high-tech elegance, the Lexus logo on the pad surface is backlit at night.
VERSATILITY THROUGH THOUGHTFUL PACKAGING The UX package is suited to making urban exploring easier. A 2640mm wheelbase contributes to a smooth, stable ride and cabin roominess. The 4495mm length and best-in-segment 10.4m curbto-curb turning diameter help make the Lexus UX easy to manoeuvre and convenient to park. The newly-developed 2nd generation run-flat tyres will be on all local models, they are quieter and more comfortable, while allowing the vehicle to travel with a flat tyre at speeds up to 80 km/h for up to 160 km. The Lexus UX is available in three model grades, namely- UX 200 EX, UX 200 F-SPORT and UX 250h SE. The models come with a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that reaps the performance and fueleconomy benefits of high thermal efficiency. These will be at the

NEW-GENERATION LEXUS HYBRID DRIVE Lexus has applied its world leadership in luxury hybrid vehicles to the 2019 UX 250h with a new-generation Lexus Hybrid Drive powertrain. With total system power of 131kW, the UX 250h is the performance leader in the UX family as well as the fuel-efficiency leader. This hybrid provides exhilarating driving with highspeed responsiveness and a feeling of smooth, natural acceleration. The new-generation hybrid system - combining the new 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motor-generators - is more compact, lighter and has less internal friction than previous Lexus hybrid systems. Compared with similarly sized Lexus hybrids, the power control unit of the UX is more powerful yet 20-per-cent smaller and 10-per-cent lighter.

With this process, the upholstery is set into the mould and is then filled with foam to complete the seat in a single process. The special 8-way poweradjustable F SPORT front seats feature lumbar adjustment, as well as manual forward/backward adjustment for the headrests. Another exciting feature worth mentioning in the F SPORT model has to be the Mark Levinson sound system. This premium surround sound system has a 13-speaker
increases damping force to minimise roll when cornering or changing lanes and reduces damping force in straight line driving to preserve ride quality. Exclusive F SPORT suspension tuning includes specific springs and stabiliser bars, plus a rear performance damper for a more refined ride. The 18-inch, five twin-spoke aluminium alloy wheels, which are unique to the F SPORT, are even more rigid than standard UX wheels, contributing to responsiveness and handling agility. An additional Sonic Interaction Design (SID) function adjusts the sound the vehicle makes when driving in Sport S+ mode (S+ Sound). The Lexus UX launches in January 2019 and customers can visit any of the Lexus dealerships around the county. The UX will come standard with a class-leading 7-year/105 000km Warranty and Full Maintenance Plan. The vehicle service intervals are at every 15 000km, alternatively once a year. HM

he new LS 500 draws on the proud history of its predecessors. The new Lexus flagship is destined to repeat LS history as a car that redefines and advances automotive luxury expectations and customer satisfaction.
TWIN-TURBO V6 AND 10-SPEED TRANSMISSION The all-new 3.5-litre V6 engine has been designed specifically for the new LS, providing both high power and excellent fuel efficiency. The engine is indicative of the more dynamic approach taken by Lexus, offering V8-level power without sacrificing fuel economy whilst minimising noise and vibration. The engine’s long stroke and optimised stroke-to-bore ratio contribute to highspeed combustion and the efficiency of the twin turbos, helping the LS post a projected 0 – 100 km/h acceleration time of 5 seconds. The LS marks the first use of a 10-speed automatic transmission in a luxury sedan, the system having made its debut in the new LC coupe.
DESIGN GENERATED BY THE SPINDLE GRILLE The spindle grille has become a signature feature of Lexus vehicle design, but its purpose is not simply a brand signifier. On the new LS, it provides a starting point for the car’s design theme, generating lines which flow through the body and converge at the rear. The grille itself has an intricate mesh design with 5 000 individual surfaces which took highly skilled CAD modellers several months to produce, followed by further precision adjustment by hand.
EXTERIOR DESIGN Lexus has revolutionised the LS’ design principles, moving from its established “three-box” sedan to a car that presents a radically different, coupe-like silhouette. Its lower, sleeker lines, which are more appealing to today’s customers, have been achieved without sacrificing any of the spaciousness and
comfort that are fundamental to the LS’ status as a flagship model. The boundary between the hood and the fenders is deeply sculpted, playing up the contrast between the different surfaces. The LS is equipped as standard with a glass sunroof which opens externally.
INTERIOR DESIGN The design of the new LS’ interior combines traditional Japanese aesthetics with advanced manufacturing techniques, reflected in elements such as the soft ambient lighting that makes the armrests appear to float next to the door panels, and new ways of working with wood to create trims with vibrant and detailed grain patterns. The new LS provides a driver-focused cockpit and a front passenger seat area designed to gently envelop the occupant. Two interior colours are available which are Black as well as Crimson and Black. The trim choices include Art Wood Organic and Herringbone.

nearly every team participating in F1 has signed on a watchmaker as a sponsor, and not just any brand. We’re talking about the world’s master watchmakers, who are as devoted to precision, performance, and perfection as the best F1 race teams are.
T
he outcome of any and every Formula 1 race pivots on that one ephemeral quantity: time. All the staggering amounts of money channelled into racing - the multi-million-dollar cars, high-performance engines, practised and talented race drivers, expensive racing gear, pit crew, and more – are geared at saving time on the racetrack. The relationship between F1 and time is a fierce, desperate, and oftentimes an unrequited love affair. Teams practise tirelessly to shave milliseconds off their lap time and in the pit, they are obsessively dedicated to getting cars back on the road in seconds… in the single digits. Pitstop perfection. Because if you don’t sear across that finish line with the fastest time, you lose. And if you don’t break records, you won’t leave behind a legacy. In an arena where the difference between obscurity and absolute glory is decided by such small time denominations, it’s only natural that a relationship between F1 and the world’s significant watch brands have flourished. Swiss luxury watchmaker Rolex is the primary sponsor of this top tier of motorsports, with Jackie Stewart and Nico Rosberg, two former world champions, as brand ambassadors. Moreover,
FERRARI AND HUBLOT The most famous team in Formula 1 is Scuderia Ferrari, who has been smashing records, victories, and championships on the racetrack since 1950. For the past seven years, Swiss watchmaker Hublot has adorned the wrists, the branding attire, and cars of the Ferrari team, the top drivers of which are Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen. However, more than the sponsorambassador relationship between Ferrari and Hublot is the collaboration between the two’s engineers in the Sebastian Vettel flying the innovation of new flag high for Hublot timepieces. The fruits of this collaboration have been a range of Ferrari branded Hublot timepieces, key among which is the Hublot MP-05 "La Ferrari" edition, an absolute work of art and engineering genius that boasts 637 individual parts centred on a cylinder that closely resembles a midengine Ferrari. MERCEDES AND IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN Another powerhouse team is the Mercedes “Silver Arrows” headed by Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas as number one and two drivers. IWC Schaffhausen is the official watch sponsor and has been since 2013. With six world championships under their belt, the Mercedes team is a brutal force on the racetrack. The talented Lewis Hamilton secured the 2018 World Drivers’ Championship title, while his team, Mercedes, secured the 2018 World Constructors’ Championship title.

Big smiles from Daniel Ricciardo, TAG Heuer brand ambassador
RED BULL RACING AND TAG HEUER Red Bull Racing and TAG Heuer is another notable partnership, especially given the watch brand’s significant history in F1. In the 1980’s, they were the engine manufacturer for McLaren, which is testament to TAG Heuer’s passion for motorsports. None other than Niki Lauda (three-time F1 World Drivers' Champion) and Alain Prost (four-time F1 Drivers' Champion) drove cars powered by “TAG Turbo” engines built by Porsche. Today, a “look under the hood” of drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen’s racecars will reveal a TAG Heuer-branded 1.6L V6 turbocharged Renault engine. The Swiss watchmaker is also the Official Timekeeper, Official Watch, and Team Performance Partner for Red Bull Racing. 96 HAUTE MONTRES

TIME TO MAKE A MARK ON THE RACETRACK Ferrari and Hublot, Mercedes and IWC Schaffhausen, Red Bull Racing and TAG Heuer, Williams and Oris, McLaren and Richard Mille, Renault and Bell & Ross‌ for just about every F1 racing team that is a force to be reckoned with, there is a master watchmaker lending its support, innovation, and superb timepieces. And while wearing a Rolex won’t help a driver win a race, the prestige of this timepiece and its history as a sponsor of F1 can serve as a reminder of the intense pressure, privilege, and pleasure of the task at hand and that, tick tick, glory is but a few seconds away.
