atch collectors the world over often wonder how much their timepieces will value over time. It can be a difficult thing to predict, and there are many factors at play — brand recognition, exclusivity, heritage, demand and availability are all key elements. Some of the brands that consistently increase in value over time include many of those that we already know and love, including Patek Philippe, Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Cartier, Panerai, Audemars Piguet, IWC and JaegerLeCoultre. Add an element of fame and fortune, and values are bound to soar even more. Read on to find out which celebrity watches have reached — or are set to reach — record prices.

DANIEL CRAIG In 2012, the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean worn by Daniel Craig in the James Bond movie Skyfall was sold for $254,273 at an auction at Christie’s in London. The proceeds of the sale were all donated to a non-profit organisation called Orbis, which provides eye care around the world. The timepiece was sold for the second-highest price for a Bond watch — the Planet Ocean from Casino Royale reached the highest ever price of $255,565, while the Rolex from Live and Let Die was sold for $196,056.

MARLON BRANDO The Rolex GMT-Master that once belonged to Marlon Brando and featured in the 1970s film Apocalypse Now is set to be auctioned later this year. The case back is engraved with the actor’s name and is still in nearmint condition. It’s expected to reach a high price, especially since it is said to be one of the “greatest ‘long-lost’ watches to finally surface after years of speculation,” according to Paul Boutros, head of watches at Phillips, who received the piece in its original state. Only time will tell what the final asking price will be, but the piece will certainly be highly sought-after at the auction, which is set to be held in December.

CHARLIE CHAPLIN At the 2013 auction of “Important Modern & Vintage Timepieces, which was held in New York City, auction house Antiquorum sold a Rolex Oyster, which was made in 1945 and owned by movie star Charlie Chaplin, for $51,250. The watch was a particularly rare piece, being one of only a few left-handed models produced by Rolex at the time. The timepiece sold for over four times its estimate and was accompanied by four vintage photographs, as well as some authenticating correspondence.

ELVIS PRESLEY Also in 2012, a rare Omega Constellation Calendar that once belonged to Elvis Presley was auctioned in New York, where it reached a price of $52,500. The piece was given a pre-sale estimate of between $10,000 and $20,000, which was far exceeded. The watch has an automatic chronometer movement with centre seconds and date, as well as a steel case with rose-gold plating. Along with the coveted timepiece, the buyer also received a letter of attestation from Charlie Hodge, a long-time friend of Presley and onetime owner of the watch. A new world record was achieved in 2018 when the same watch was resold for CHF1,500,000 at the Geneva Watch Auction: Seven, by Phillips.

The watch from the famed guitarist and songwriter (nicknamed “slowhand”) has 23 jewels, silvered matte dial, applied gold baton and square numerals, gold dauphine hands, outer Arabic five minute divisions, windows for day and month, three subsidiary dials for constant seconds, 30 minutes register and moon phases with date, circular case, stepped downturned lugs, snap on back.

ERIC CLAPTON A very rare Patek Philippe from Eric Clapton’s personal collection was sold for $3,635,808 at a Christie’s auction in Geneva in 2012. The watch was manufactured in 1987 as one of only two platinum versions of the particular model ever made. The timepiece, which has a perpetual calendar, chronograph and moon-phase, actually sold at a world record price for the particular model reference at auction. HM

A FINE ART The art of watchmaking involves the use of various materials — some rooted in tradition, and others that are newer to the scene. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL

here was a time when artisans would craft watches from materials like precious metals, chrome-plated brass, and later, stainless steel. As new manufacturing methods developed, so too did the use of new and innovative materials. Today the range of materials is vast — we take a look at some of the most cutting-edge and how they contribute to the seamless designs we have grown to love.

RUBY Before the twentieth century, natural jewels were used as the bearing for wheel trains and other elements that were prone to wear and tear. In 1902, French chemist Auguste Verneuil came up with a method that allowed him to manufacture synthetic rubies, which are still used today to reduce friction and increase accuracy in watch movements. WEAR IT: The ClĂŠ de Cartier Serti Vibrant watch features a white-gold case set with diamonds, sapphires and rubies, as well as a burgundy semi-matte alligator skin strap.

GOLD Precious metals have always been a key material in watchmaking, and gold remains an important element today. It’s used in all its forms, including yellow, white, rose, and red, particularly in watch cases. WEAR IT: The Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 36 from Rolex is available in 18 carat yellow, white or everose gold with distinctive new dials and gem-set bezels on some of the versions. STAINLESS STEEL Stainless steel was first used in watchmaking in the 1930s and has since grown in popularity. In fact, the material is now the most widely used case material, having overtaken gold. Stainless steel is loved in horology for its resistance to corrosion, as well as the fact that it is so lightweight. Plus, the material is well suited to designs that are sporty and practical. WEAR IT: The Omega Constellation Globemaster Co-Axial Master Chronometer 39 mm in steel features a stainless steel case, as well as a hard metal scratchproof fluted bezel.

SILICON Fairly new to the watchmaking scene, silicon often serves as a replacement for metal parts within the movement. When compared to metal, silicon is particularly lightweight, resistant to extreme temperatures, and durable. The material is resistant to high magnetic fields and also allows the movement to run at a very high frequency, which results in excellent accuracy. WEAR IT: The Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 150m Co-Axial Master Chronometer Ladies’ 38 mm is fitted with a silicon balance spring.

BRONZE Although bronze has been used for centuries, it has recently enjoyed a rise in popularity. On the practical side, the material boasts anti-magnetic and noncorrosive qualities, while from a design perspective, it creates a beautiful and distinct look, especially as it ages over time. WEAR IT: The Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Diver Green Bronze is the first version of the brand’s square dive watch to be made with bronze and features an olive-green dial and bezel.

CARBOTECH In 2015, Panerai was the first brand to use carbotech, a tough material made from reinforced carbon fibre. Carbotech is extremely durable, and also has a distinctive look well-suited to utilitarian and masculine designs. WEAR IT: The Panerai Submersible Carbotech 47 mm has a carbotech case with an uneven, matte black appearance, as well as a unidirectional rotating bezel and crownprotecting device.

TITANIUM Titanium only started to be used in watchmaking some decades after stainless steel hit the market. The material actually shares some of the characteristics of stainless steel in that it is resistant to corrosion and very durable. WEAR IT: The Breitling Cockpit B50 Orbiter Limited Edition has a black carbon-coated titanium case, with a vibrant orange dial and rubber strap.

CERATANIUM Among the latest trends in watchmaking are hybrid materials, and in 2019, IWC Schaffhausen was the first to use ceratanium, an alloy that combines titanium and ceramic. The material is a rich black shade and is both lightweight and strong. WEAR IT: The IWC Pilot’s watch double chronograph Top Gun Ceratanium has a ceratanium case and a beautiful jet-black design.

That’s one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.

I

n all of human history, few if any spoken phrases have achieved immortality and borne a greater resounding significance than those of astronaut Neil Armstrong, the very first person to step onto the surface of the moon. These words, received by a world audience of an estimated 650 million people who watched the moon landing, were the culmination of 400,000 people’s tireless toil and a staggering cost of $25 billion. Now, 50 years later, the United States and indeed the world remember this monumental achievement of science, technology, and courage. What was, a mere decade earlier, considered a flight of fancy became a defining moment for humankind and one that will continue to be remembered and celebrated for centuries and even millennia to come.

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED At 09:32 local time (13:32 UTC) on 16 July 1969, the vast Saturn V rocket erupted into a furious, boiling cloud of fire, blasting the Apollo 11 spacecraft off the familiarity of terra firma and into the zero-gravity chasm of space. Inside was a team of three crewmembers: commander Neil Armstrong, lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin, and command module pilot

Michael Collins. Three days after lift-off from launch pad 39A at Florida's Kennedy Space Centre, the astronauts guided the Apollo Lunar Module, Eagle, into orbit around the moon and, on 20 July at 20:17 UTC, they touched down on the moon. The Eagle had landed (and, yes, that’s where that expression comes from). Six hours later, Neil Armstrong stepped from the lunar module onto the powdery, pockmarked surface of the moon’s Sea of Tranquillity, joined by Aldrin 19 minutes later. For 95 minutes, the astronauts frolicked about on the low gravity lunarscape, taking iconic photographs, and collecting over 21 kilograms of moon rocks and dust to be studied back on Earth. All the while, pilot Michael Collins manned the command module Columbia in orbit above. A total of 21.5 hours later, the astronauts returned to Columbia, which, on 24 July, ripped

through the Earth’s atmosphere on its return, splashing safely down in the Pacific Ocean. The entire excursion took eight days but was almost a decade in the making.

50 YEARS LATER Half a century has passed since the team of three astronauts made history. Sadly, Neil Armstrong passed away in August 2012 at the age of 82, but command module pilot Michael Collins (88) and Buzz Aldrin (89) are still alive and well and have been attending

I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal before this decade is out of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the longrange exploration of space. And none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish. - President John F. Kennedy, 25 May 1961

Michael Collins speaks to Kennedy Space Center Director Bob Cabana about the moments leading up to the launch and what it was like to be the first to land on the Moon.

various anniversary ceremonies and commemorative celebrations around the country. Collins visited the Kennedy Space Centre, where, at the original launchpad site of the Saturn V rocket, he recalled the physical and mental burden of the astronauts’ undertaking: “The shockwave from the rocket power hits you,” he said in an interview with NASA TV. “Your whole body is shaking. This gives you an entirely different concept of what power really means. We felt the weight of the world on our shoulders; we knew that everyone would be looking at us, friend or foe.” Aldrin, who rarely makes public appearances, did attend the Apollo 11 anniversary celebration dinner at the Space & Rocket Centre in Huntsville, Alabama. When he took his place on the podium, his speech focused on the next steps, rather than those he and Armstrong took on the moon 50 years ago: “What is needed now for our country is the next step space alliance - that's the gathering together of the capable entities, space agencies, and other contributors. Then we can all put together what is really needed (financially) to get to Mars.” One can only wonder at the next iconic phrase to be uttered when the first astronaut sets foot on the Red Planet. HM

tatus is the primary currency of the luxury timepiece; after all, nothing says “winning at life” quite like a Patek Philippe on your wrist. The manufacturers behind the world’s most prestigious watch brands spare no expense in crafting luxury timepieces that are unique works of art and marvels of modern micro engineering. Gold, platinum, and precious gemstones are all commonly used in the design of high-end watches but in a world where rarity, exclusivity, and status are king, what could be rarer and more desirable than a watch crafted from polished meteorite?

WANDERING SPACE ROCK Meteorites are chunks of rock that have very likely travelled billions of kilometres – light years - through the void of space before surviving an incandescent descent through the atmosphere and a 30,000km/h fender bender with the Earth’s surface. That’s quite a story to tell

and one that is made even more beguiling by the fact that meteorites are often billions of years old; typically, 4.5 billion years to be precise, depending on their origin. The unique conditions in space – namely, temperatures of minus 273 degrees Celsius - result in the unique crystallisation of meteors’ metal-rich composite materials. And so, with careful cutting and polishing, a striking latticework of crystals and textures can be revealed beneath the typically bulbous and cratered countenance of a meteorite. Using wafer-thin slices of this, timepiece companies can craft a stunning watch dial with a truly out of this world backstory! Interesting fact: ‘meteors’ refer to wandering bits of space rock; they’re called ‘meteorites’ as soon as they make contact with the Earth.

METEORITE DIAL WATCHES The intrigue of using such an ancient and well-travelled object was too good to pass up and so luxury watch brands such as Cartier, Corum Admiral, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Parmigiani Fleurier,

and Rolex have released models with dials crafted from polished meteorite, while De Bethune and independent watchmaker David Rutten have gone so far as making watch cases out of the space rock. There are even a handful of value-oriented brands like Zelos and Invicta Watch that have released timepieces with meteorite dials.

their kaleidoscopic refractive properties, so too do meteorites need to be carefully cut and prepared to reveal their arresting interior latticework. Watchmakers need to cut along specific planes to reveal the most striking patterns and then, after polishing the slice, they give it an acid bath, which eats away at the more carbonaceous composite materials, creating a greater contrast between those and the metal-heavy minerals. The result is a distinctly patterned surface that has travelled the universe and is around the same age as the Earth. Also, you won’t find another like it! Being organic, a meteorite’s Widmanstätten patterns are, like fingerprints, totally unique.

Rolex GMT-Master II

A UNIQUE AESTHETIC A polished meteorite surface – particularly those that are rich in metals like iron and nickel - yields silvery patterns of interlaced fine etchings known as Widmanstätten patterns. It’s really rather beautiful with no parallel here on Earth. Of course, revealing such intricate patterns requires more refined workmanship than simply cracking open a meteorite with a hammer. Like diamonds are painstakingly cut to optimise IN PARTNERSHIP WITH LEXUS 67

WHERE DO THEY COME FROM? Meteorites are, in the true sense of the word, exotic materials and surely quite rare to come by. An estimated 500 meteorites reach the Earth’s surface each year, but only five or six of these typically create a weather radar signature with a strewn field large enough to be recovered. So, where do watchmaking companies get their space rocks from? There are a few popular sources, such as Sweden’s Muonionalusta meteorite (below) and Namibia’s Gibeon meteorite. Both impacts Below: About 600 million years ago, a massive meteoroid hurtled through space before crashing into what would later become known as Namibia. A large portion of the space rocks were found around the village of Gibeon, earning them the name Gibeon Meteorites. 30 of these rocks are on public display at the Post Street Mall in Windhoek. They were declared a National Monument in February 1950.

left a swath of meteoric shrapnel over quite a large surface area.

A PREOCCUPATION WITH THE STARS Humankind has always been deeply intrigued by the star-studded firmament above our heads. The arrangement and movement of the constellations and planets in the night sky have spawned countless myths and legends; and its study made early navigation, agriculture, and timekeeping possible. In another sense, the cold, impartial world that lies outside the bounds of our atmosphere reminds us of our impermanence on this planet, which makes life in the moment all the sweeter. To wear a watch that features a sliver of ancient, wandering space rock is, therefore, not only to have something with an out of this world backstory but to own a piece of the heavens. HM

Bell& Ross

Unveils New BR 05 Collection THE TIME MEASURING INSTRUMENT FOR THE URBAN EXPLORER

B

ell & Ross, a leading brand in the aviation watch market with its iconic square BR 03 model designed for professionals in extreme environments, is now unveiling its BR 05 collection. Faithful to the brand’s watchwords of legibility, functionality, reliability, and precision, this new model boasts a resolutely urban look and feel. The lines of its case combine round and square, the basic geometric shapes that form part of Bell & Ross’ identity.

72_Profile ONE_B&R.indd 72

The construction of the BR 05 surpasses the rigour of the square and transcends the perfection of the circle to define its own individual character. Its confident style harnesses the energy of the city, its rhythm, and its richness. BR 05 is the time measuring instrument for the urban explorer.

AN INTEGRATED DESIGN The BR 05 belongs to the family of watches with an integrated case: the bracelet fuses with the case to create a unified piece.

“This integration of case and bracelet is not only in line with the brand’s visual identity, it also brings another dimension to the watch: the first link forms part of the case. This type of design harks back to the seventies, and when transposed to Bell & Ross, it creates a result with a graphic style which is both striking and modern.” - Bruno Belamich, co-founder and creative director of Bell & Ross.

A NEW EDGE The rich finishes of the BR 05 draw the eye. Its 40 mm case is angular, the satin-finished surfaces are perfectly flat, the face anti-reflective coated sapphire

BR 05 BLUE STEEL

The dial of the BR 05, radiating with a subtle sunray finish, offers optimum legibility and is available in silver grey (BR 05 Grey Steel), navy blue (BR 05 Blue Steel), or deep black (BR 05 Black Steel). These different colours are complemented by another model, with a skeleton dial and mechanism. Limited to only 500 pieces, the BR 05 Skeleton effortlessly showcases the calibre BR-CAL.322 mechanism designed by Bell & Ross. Wound by a 360° oscillating weight, this model is open-worked to allow the movement to be admired in full. Finally, an 18 carat rose gold version of the case (BR 05 Gold) completes the first chapter of this new story.

crystal, and the polished bevels emphasize and enhance the volumes they contain. These alternating satin-finished and polished surfaces are also found on the remarkably flexible steel bracelet. Particular attention has been paid to the arc of the curve, allowing all the components to be perfectly aligned and ensuring the bracelet can adapt seamlessly to any wrist. The new collection is also available with a ribbed rubber strap, a truly stylish alternative.

BR 05 SKELETON

A JEWEL OF STRENGTH Owing to its integrated design, robust comfort, and meticulous finishes, the BR 05 is a loyal ally for any active, urban lifestyle. Full of character, this instrument exudes strength and elegance. It is the latest jewel of masculinity from Bell & Ross - sculptural and captivating – and ideal for the man about town, eager to face the challenges of modern life and in control of time and his own destiny. 50 CELEBRATING

HALF A CENTURY It’s been 50 years since TAG Heuer launched the Monaco, and now the brand is reimagining the iconic model with brand new versions, as well as global events and a book.

n 1969, the Monaco, which would soon become famous for its innovative design and pioneering technology, was launched. Fifty years later, the timepiece remains relevant, and TAG Heuer is honouring it with a series of limited-edition models, special events around the world (including Europe, the United States, and Asia), and a new book titled Paradoxical Superstar, which follows the historical and technical highlights of the much-loved Monaco.

THE ORIGINAL PIECE When the original Monaco was launched in 1969, each of its elements was striking — a metallic blue dial, red and light blue hands, a square case and the lefthand placement of the crown. The intention of the design was to create something avant-garde and innovative, and the unconventional case and overall aesthetic ensured that the piece really stood out. In terms of technology, the Monaco was equally advanced. In fact, the timepiece was the first to boast a water-resistant square case, as well as a Calibre 11, which was a collaboration between Heuer, Breitling and Hamilton, and the first automatic-winding chronograph movement. The piece got its name from the glamorous Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix, and the TAG Heuer brand remains the official watch of the Monaco Top Cars Collection Museum today.

A GRADUAL TRANSFORMATION In 1971, the Monaco made movie history when it shared the screen with Steve McQueen (left) in the film Le Mans. By the midseventies, however, the piece was ready for a makeover. Black was big in the fashion world, and in line with the trend, the Monaco was given a black anodised case. This new model was named The Dark Lord and is still coveted by collectors the world over. In 1985, the Heuer brand became TAG Heuer, and in 1998, the Monaco was relaunched, still deeply inspired by the original model and its revolutionary spirit.

NEW RELEASES

The Dark Lord

To honour the fiftieth anniversary of the Monaco, TAG Heuer has released a book that documents the history and spirit of the iconic

timepiece. The book, titled Paradoxical Superstar, follows the lifetime of the Monaco and includes archive excerpts, neverbefore-seen pictures, and sketches of the designs and movements. The book features chapters from numerous renowned writers and watch experts, including British journalist Nicholas Foulkes, writer and watch expert Gisbert Brunner, and American editor and watch aficionado Michael Clerizo.

LIMITED EDITION TIMEPIECES From left: Special Edition Through Time 70’s, 80’s and 90’s

The brand also recently announced the unveiling of five limited edition timepieces inspired by the original Monaco. Each of the pieces is inspired by a decade from 1969 to 2019 and promises to capture the unique and ground-breaking style of the first-ever Monaco. Three models have already been released, namely the Monaco 1969 – 1979 Limited Edition, Monaco 1979 – 1989 Limited Edition, and the Monaco 1989 – 1999 Limited Edition, while the others will be revealed throughout the course of the year. RADO CAPTAIN COOK AUTOMATIC COLLECTION The original Captain Cook range was produced between 1962 and 1968 and was known for its compact design and distinctive features. Since 2017, the Captain Cook is back in the Rado collection and true to the original in almost every way. Drawing on all the great elements that made the original a roaring success, and using signature materials that have appeared on favourite Rado models through the years, the new Captain Cook collection brings all Rado’s milestone moments together for maximum impact. Shapes form the basis of this year’s Captain Cook collection, which feature distinctive sword and arrow hands, luminescent wedge-shaped indexes, scratch resistance sapphire crystal face, and a durable high-tech glossy black ceramic inlay. Typical Rado colours are another striking element of the new collection with green, blue, and brown versions making their debut in matching combinations of dials and bezels. The famous moving anchor symbol, now a feature of all Rado automatic watches, has a new ‘60s inspired ruby background, which represents quality and precision just as it did in 1962.

RADO CAPTAIN COOK AUTOMATIC LIMITED EDITION WITH A TRAVEL CASE For Rado’s Captain Cook Automatic Limited Edition, the future-focused Swiss watchmaker combines the brand’s illustrious past with its pioneering present for a watch that is designed to look good now – and in the future. Limited to just 1,962 pieces, and balancing authentic vintage style with the modern preference for personalisation, the new 2019 Captain Cook is delivered in a hardwearing leather travel pouch with a selection of straps, including the brown vintage-

look leather strap, fine knit stainless steel Milanese bracelet, or durable NATO strap. The 37 mm stainless steel case, featuring three seahorses, is exactly the same size as the original and the watch’s other iconic features are all present and correct in 2019, complete with modern materials updates for added scratch resistance, optimum dial protection, and 80 hours of power reserve. The new Rado Captain Cook Automatic is a perfect vintage look for modern time travellers.

RADO TRADITION GOLDEN HORSE AUTOMATIC COLLECTION The Golden Horse collection from 1957 was a breakthrough; the first collection presented under the brand’s name and a demonstration of early leadership in creating watches as fashion items and personal style statements. To complement the ‘new vintage’ Golden Horse 37 mm models, Rado also presents ‘new contemporary’ Golden Horse Automatic models, which are based on the original design but with exaggerated elements. The case is bigger, the bezel is bolder, the crown more distinctive. Vintage design is carefully balanced with bold new elements using the brand’s latest pioneering materials innovations, such as injectable rose gold coloured Ceramos, Rado’s unique wonder material that boasts a luxurious shine and superior scratch resistance. With the eye-catching new Golden Horse Automatic collection, evolution beats revolution for a strong design statement and a truly versatile contemporary timepiece. HM

We take a look at some of the latest offerings from the renowned fashion house, from haute couture to this season’s most coveted watches and accessories.

Among the stand-out pieces on the runway were the iconic Chanel tweed jacket, which was showcased in a number of variations — with and without a collar, single and double-breasted, rounded and squared shoulders; sophisticated dresses with beautiful design elements, including plunging necklines, asymmetrical shoulders, and removable collars; and ruffled skirts in soft chiffon. Along with the clothing, accessories also played a key part in the runway collection, with metal hoop and pendant earrings; beaded cuff bracelets set with leather, resin and stones; and quilted leather bags with floral-embroidered tweed.

TIMEPIECES Almost 80 years after the Chanel brand was established, the company released their first luxury watch, the Premiere in 1987. Now the fashion house is renowned for its elegant range of timepieces, and earlier this year Chanel relaunched one of its favourites, the J12 on its 20th anniversary. Still available in the everpopular black or white ceramic, the watch comes with a few considerable improvements — in fact, the timepiece now comes with a brand-new movement from Genevabased manufacturer Kenissi, as well as lacquered dials and Arabic numerals.

HIGH JEWELLERY In the early 1930s, Gabrielle Chanel began experimenting with her first fine jewellery collection, which became known as the Bijoux de Diamants, but it was only in 1993 that the brand opened their first fine jewellery boutique in Paris. Today, the brand offers a range of jewellery, and some of the latest designs are particularly beautiful. The Coco Crush collection is designed for endless mixing and matching and includes rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings. The quilted motif necklace, available in yellow gold, beige gold, yellow gold and diamonds, beige gold and diamonds, and white gold and diamonds is a really elegant piece, while the quilted motif bracelets lend themselves to layering for a graphic statement. aving debuted the reinvented flagship sedan in 2018 - the all-new LS - Lexus is putting an exclamation point on this signature model with the new F Sport model. The LS F Sport moves the driving emotion needle even further with handling enhancements and a performance-infused design outside and in.

THE LOOK Lexus designers didn’t hold back when giving the LS its coupelike silhouette and dramatic rendition of the Lexus signature

spindle grille that shows even greater intricacy in the design. Developing the F Sport grille took computer-aided design (CAD) operators some five months to achieve the desired texture and interaction with light. Even then, they adjusted 7,100 individual surfaces to achieve the desired look and texture (compared to 5,000 for the LS 500’s grille). And when combined with the sporty enlarged side grille, the F Sport grille is functional as well, helping to maintain the vehicle’s cooling performance. The special F Sport front grille, rocker panel, and trunk mouldings accentuate the sedan’s rakish profile, while F Sport badging on fenders and exclusive 20-inch alloy wheels complete the exterior transformation.

INSIDE THE MARVEL As it did with the exterior, Lexus shifted the LS cabin into F Sport spec by applying trim and features exclusive to this version. A common thread

through all LS models remains: Omotenashi, the concept of Japanese hospitality. Applied to the LS, it means taking care of the driver and passengers, anticipating their needs, attending to their comfort and helping to protect them from hazards - the F Sport adds a performance attitude to the mix. The F Sport persona shines throughout the cabin, starting with the F Sport-exclusive front seat, which provides enhanced support for dynamic driving. A perforated-grill pattern on seating surfaces and unique scored aluminium trim elements add additional sporty flair. The driver faces a special F Sport steering wheel as well as a speedometer and tachometer in a movable meter with a meter ring that slides to display information, a design adapted from the

limited-production Lexus LFA supercar and a further expression of the car’s dynamic character. Attention to detail shows in the aluminium accelerator, brake and footrest pedals, as well as the F Sport perforated shift handle and footrest. Ultra-suede in the seats and headliner is the crowning touch. For those desiring the ultimate sporty look, a new Flare Red interior is available exclusively on F Sport models.

SPORTING GENES The LS is based on an extended version of the brand’s premium global architecture for luxury vehicles (GA–L) platform from the new Lexus LC coupe. The GA-L platform sets the stage

for enhanced handling, ride smoothness and cabin quietness. The LS F Sport capitalises on the platform’s responsiveness and agility. Equipping the LS F Sport with standard 20-inch wheels and 245/45RF20+ 275/40RF20 tyres, along with larger front and rear brakes (6-piston calipers on front and 4 pistons on rear), unlocks more of the platform’s intrinsic performance capability. The LS F Sport is equipped with LDH (Variable Gear Ratio Steering) and has a sport-tuned air suspension with rapid height function. The result is a full-size premium luxury sedan that responds more like a sports coupe through curves, helping to underline what F Sport stands for. 415-Horsepower Heart with a 10-Speed Partner Lexus designed an all-new 3.5-litre V6 engine specifically for the new LS 500, using twin turbo chargers developed through the company’s F1 technology. This new twin-turbo V6 offers V8-level performance – 415 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque – paired with the first-ever 10-speed automatic transmission in a luxury sedan.

TWIN-TURBO V6 AND 10-SPEED TRANSMISSION The all-new 3.5-litre V6 engine has been designed specifically for the new LS, providing both high power and excellent fuel efficiency. The engine is indicative of the more dynamic approach taken by Lexus, offering V8-level power without sacrificing fuel economy while minimising noise and vibration. The LS F Sport’s output figures are 310 kW and 600 Nm of torque at 6000rpm. The engine’s long stroke and optimised stroke-to-bore ratio contribute to high-speed combustion and the efficiency of the twin turbos, helping the LS post a projected 0 – 100 km/h acceleration time of 5 seconds. The LS marks the first use of a 10-speed automatic transmission in a luxury sedan, the system having made its debut in the new LC coupe. It is a torque converter automatic, yet with shift times that rival those of dualclutch transmissions. The wide bandwidth afforded by the ten closely spaced ratios is ideal for all forms of driving, providing an optimal gear for all conditions. Torque converter lock-up is activated in all ranges, except when starting off, to provide a direct feel, while at the same time supporting fuel efficiency. Top speed for the LS is electronically

governed to 250 km/h. Fuel consumption is listed as 9.5 litres per 100 kilometres.

LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM The LS F Sport offers a comprehensive suite of exclusive, semi-automated driving technologies honed on one of the most complex highway systems in the world, the Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway. The vehicle’s Pre-Crash System with Pedestrian Detection reduces the likelihood and severity of collisions by detecting imminent frontal impact and automatically preparing Brake Assist, reacting before the driver does - while the

emergency brake signal acts, to prevent rear-end collisions. The High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control uses advanced radar and camera technology to maintain a safe distance between your LS F Sport and the car in front – completely stopping, if necessary. Lane Departure Alert with Lane Keep Assist, Steering Control and Steering Vibration keeps the LS F Sport in the correct lane, preventing unintentional drifting across road markings. The LS F Sport also comes standard with 10 Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbags which aim to keep the driver and passengers safe in the unfortunate event of an accident. Additional safety features that come standard with the LS F Sport include; Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Sport Monitor and LED Adaptive High-beam System (AHS).

PRICES AND SERVICE INFORMATION The Lexus LS F Sport retails for R1 975,900. The LS has best-inclass 7-year/105 000 km Warranty and Full Maintenance Plan. The vehicle’s service intervals are at every 15 000 km, alternatively once a year. HM

LEXUS PUTS THE F IN RC

Lexus is pleased to announce that the revised RC F range, including the first-ever sharp-specification RC F Track Edition, is now available in South Africa.

ith its focus on reduced weight and even more dynamic handling, the RC F debuts enhanced styling with improved aerodynamics with greater downforce particularly on the front axle, stiffer and lighter suspension components, firmer steering control, more intuitive transmission and grippier tyres. In the case of the all-new RC F Track Edition with its bespoke carbon-fibre accoutrement, the changes are even more pronounced. The result? More engaging handling with improved driver feedback, enabling higher turn-in speed to a corner, greater chassis stability during rapid direction changes, plus improved steering and throttle response.

EXTERIOR CHANGES DELIVER ENHANCED AERODYNAMICS Lexus has targeted a major leap forward in aerodynamic downforce with the RC F and RC F Track Edition, adopting strategies from the acclaimed RC F GT500 and RC F GT3 race cars. The changes made reduces lift as well as manage airflow more efficiently around

the car to improve dynamic stability and reduce drag while also refining the coupes’ appearances. New canard shapes on the front-bumper spoiler corners help optimise stability across a variety of speeds. The RC F Track Edition adds a carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) front spoiler to further enhance front-end turn-in control. The CFRP bonnet and roof reduce vehicle kerb weight by 9kg while lowering the centre of gravity and delivering an aggressive look befitting of a racetrack-focused flagship. In profile, a fin has been adopted to the lower edge of the rocker mouldings, protruding 20mm outwards. These create increased vertical air resistance, suppressing excess motion during vehicle roll movement. The quad exhaust pipes are produced in titanium with a signature blue tip for the RC F Track Edition, delivering both a more strident exhaust note particularly at high engine speeds and a further 7kg weight reduction. A retractable spoiler features as standard on the RC F. A CFRP fixed rear wing on the RC F Track Edition increases downforce by 26kg while delivering both a 3kg weight reduction and 2.0 per cent reduction in drag co-efficiency. The signature spindle grille and lower bumper air intakes have been broadened to help deliver a bolder look and more aggressive stance, emphasising vehicle width.

In South Africa, the RC F is available in a choice of six colours including White Nova, Sonic Titanium, Solar Storm Red, Poseidon Blue, Naples Yellow and Graphite Black. The RC F Track Edition is available in only four colour options which include White Nova, Sonic Titanium, Mercury Grey Metallic as well as Graphite Black.

SHARPER, MORE DYNAMIC LEXUS RC F Enhanced steering effectiveness and reduced understeer were core development targets for the RC F and RC F Track Edition, with lighter and stronger chassis components now delivering an even more agile and dynamic driving experience. Newly developed Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres have been tailored specifically to the RC F and RC F Track Edition to

further improve turn-in grip, power-down on corner exit and lateral cornering G particularly at high speeds. When the vehicle is in the SPORT S+ mode, a less restrictive vehicle stability control (VSC) setting is enabled. This mode allows drivers a high level of both driving confidence and fun that is suitable for a racetrack environment. When the vehicle is in SPORT S+, and the VSC Off switch is pressed, EXPERT mode is enabled. EXPERT provides pro-active slide control of the vehicle that is suitable for a racetrack environment, allowing the driver to hone their skills on the track with a small degree of electronic assistance. The RC F's highly specialised Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) has also been improved thanks to faster, smoother and more precise damping force adjustment.

MORE RESPONSIVE, EURO 6-COMPLIANT V8 Lexus has delivered a newly revised 5.0-litre V8 for the RC F and RC F Track Edition that further embraces the benefits of natural aspiration in a flagship performance coupe. An innate driver connection via the throttle and a stirring high-rpm crescendo have been targeted for even greater improvement while reducing emissions and improving responsiveness. A maximum power of 351 kW is produced at 7100rpm, and peak torque of 530 Nm is delivered between 4800rpm and 5600rpm. A benchmark blend of driver connection, aural satisfaction and superb performance have been achieved, delivering immediate throttle response, high rev-ability as well as 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds for RC F and 4.3 seconds for RC F Track Edition. The highly sophisticated 2UR-GSE petrol engine, which continues to be finely crafted with forged connecting rods and titanium valves, is now lighter and becomes Euro-6-emissions-compliant for the first time. There has also been further optimisation of the exclusive Lexus D-4S control, which combines port and direct fuel injection with a high 12.3:1 compression ratio for maximum performance and low emissions. In SPORT S and SPORT S+ modes, the transmission delivers the most sophisticated and aggressive tuning yet, with quicker downshifting than the LC sports car. When driving on winding roads or a racetrack, the control maintains a low gear and high engine speed, offering a response to rival that of extremely advanced-level drivers using manual control. When driving at a leisurely pace, the control uses finely tuned intuitive technology to select a high gear and keep engine speed low. Drivers can opt for manual gear selection by interacting with a centreconsole-mounted tip-shifter or steeringwheel-mounted paddle-shifters. For ease of use, the launch control switch is on the centre console below the Drive Mode Select dial that offers ECO, NORMAL, SPORT S, SPORT S+ and

custom modes. When ECO mode is selected, engine output, throttle opening, and airconditioning are automatically controlled to enable fuel-efficient driving. It shares a standard level of electric power steering assistance with NORMAL mode, which delivers a balanced feeling of acceleration and smoothness. When SPORT S mode is selected, the engine output, throttle opening, and steering assistance are adjusted for excellent acceleration and sporty steering feel. SPORT S+ maintains these selections but switches the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) to its firmest setting and the Vehicle Dynamic Integrated Management (VDIM) to a higher threshold before electronic intervention occurs. Drivers can also choose Custom mode, individually engaging each selection including ECO, NORMAL and POWER for the powertrain, NORMAL and SPORT for AVS and EPS, and ECO and NORMAL for air-conditioning.

LEXUS RC F AND RC F TRACK EDITION PRICES AND SERVICE INFORMATION The Lexus RC F retails for R1 318 300. The RC F Track Edition retails for R2 098 200. Both vehicles come standard with Lexus’ best-in-class 7-year/105 000 km Warranty and Full Maintenance Plan. The vehicle’s service intervals are at every 15 000 km, alternatively every 12 months. lder, male, and typically clad in fabulously expensive Italian suits – this is the stereotype that consistently described the watch brand bosses of yesteryear. And perhaps because of their strict adherence to tradition, luxury watch brands have been slow to keep up with the trends and the times. This, however, is all changing; a paradigm shift brought about by Johann Rupert, the chairman of the Richemont Group, who told shareholders that he was tired of “grey men” running his companies, which include the likes of IWC, JaegerLeCoultre, and Piaget. Consequently, a new generation of luxury watch brand bosses have emerged - a breed that is younger, more tech-savvy, and ready to pivot on their heels according to the demands of the people, rather than the product. They are innovators with a finger on the pulse of the industry and their audiences, and who are persistent in their quest for evolution and inspiration.

2019/08/20 5:27 PM

MEET SNEAKER-WEARING PATRICK PRUNIAUX Tall, tanned, and athletic Patrick Pruniaux is the perfect example of this new breed. At 47-years-old, the former TAG Heuer exec and Apple brand manager has been seduced into the role of chief executive of luxury Swiss watch manufacturers, Ulysse Nardin and Girard-Perregaux, both owned by the Kering group of luxury companies. Instead of grooming for the role of older male boss with more panache than James Bond, he’s teaching the Swiss a thing or two about having a youthful and dynamic ‘Apple’ frame of mind. “There are no silos at Apple,” says Pruniaux. “I’m trying to favour empowerment and autonomy at Ulysse Nardin. The typical watch company doesn’t work in this way – it would be very hierarchical. I believe in order, but also in disorder. Encourage people to express

themselves. Every idea is a good idea. Do not discount an idea because of the title of the person within your organisation.”

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW Pruniaux’s appointment to CEO in August 2017 came on the heels of launching Apple Watch in the United Kingdom. It’s his experience with the ‘smart’ brand that informed his approach to the role, rather than his knowledge of the watch industry: “Apple was very demanding and very professional,” he says, referencing Apple’s talent for creating overnight global conversations about new products. “Everything is done top-notch. In the luxury business, we need to be obsessed with that.” Until now, Pruniaux has been concentrating primarily on Ulysse Nardin, replacing the previous wholly forgettable marketing campaigns with animated new messaging and artwork that creates a powerful sense of brand identity and personality.

THE FREAK NEXT CONCEPT WATCH On a more technical note, Pruniaux is stoking the fires of conversation around Ulysse Nardin’s pioneering role in silicon watchmaking technology; a role that was almost entirely forgotten thanks to brands like Patek Philippe and Zenith doing a better job of telling the story. And he’s doing this by debuting the brand’s new concept watch, the Freak neXt, an exciting new timepiece that features a highfrequency regulating organ called a ‘flying oscillator’. Pruniaux is also setting up a very different organisation to the one that existed before the Apple exec took over the reins, creating a more egalitarian environment that promotes collaboration and contribution. “I don’t want to say anything negative about the previous organisation, but a lot of decisions were one-to-one based, the CEO and someone else. I don’t believe in that,” he says. “It’s much more interesting if there are ten other people giving their view, but when a time comes to make a call, I will make it, no problem.”

NEXT GENERATION WATCHES, NEXT GENERATION LEADERSHIP The confident, energetic, yet pragmatic leader is a prime example of the new leadership percolating through the management of luxury watch companies. And because of this, the giants of the timepiece industry are finally paying attention to their audiences and developing a more intriguing personality and story. Concluding with a sentiment that could be the motto for this next generation of watch brand bosses, Pruniaux says simply: “I like to think I’m participating in something which is going to be built for all time.” HM 120 HAUTE MONTRES

uxury Swiss watch manufacturer, brainchild of Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf, and represented by legendary ambassadors Lady Gaga and David Beckham… TUDOR is an internationally recognised name to be reckoned with. In 2017, however, the brand went supernova with the announcement of its promotion to Official Timekeeper of World Rugby, the world governing body for the sport of rugby. The announcement was made at the World Rugby Awards in Monaco 2017 and marked the start of a seven-year deal that will see TUDOR representing the Rugby World Cup 2019 and 2023,

the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2021, Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018 and 2022, and the annual World Rugby U20 Championship. As if that wasn’t a tall enough assignment, the partnership also covered Presenting Partner status for the World Rugby Hall of Fame (in Rugby, England) and the Breakthrough Player of the Year Award at the World Rugby Awards in Monaco, of which New Zealand rugby union player Beauden John Barrett (above) was the recipient twice in a row. In other words: the world’s biggest and most prestigious rugby competitions and events, which translates into a smashing victory for the luxury Swiss watch manufacturer.

AN ALIGNING OF PHILOSOPHIES Anyone who’s ever watched a game of rugby has surely marvelled at the Herculean display of strength, stamina, strategy, and, at times, flagrant disregard for bodily wellbeing the game entails,

with players throwing themselves into headlong tackles with other players whose bulk approximates that of a charging buffalo. TUDOR’s catchphrase “Born To Dare” therefore serves as a most appropriate mantra for rugby players, particularly those who make it to the international arena. “In line with TUDOR’s ‘Born To Dare’ mantra, World Rugby is on a mission to grow our sport beyond its traditional markets and communities and we are looking forward to working with TUDOR to further the projection of rugby in a global context,” said World Rugby Chairman Bill Beaumont. However, TUDOR’s support for rugby isn’t new. The watch brand’s promotion to Official Timekeeper for the Rugby World Cup comes on the heels of their sponsorship of the All Blacks rugby team, as well as the custom design of the Black Bay Dark, a vintage-inspired all-black steel diver’s watch,

which perfectly matches the team colours and is as robust as the wearers. They have also sponsored the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, so TUDOR’s partnership with World Rugby extends far beyond a mere aligning of philosophies. “Much like ‘Born To Dare’, TUDOR’s manifesto, World Rugby has a rich and famous history that has shaped the sport to what it has become today,” commented a TUDOR spokesperson. “Under World Rugby’s governance, Rugby World Cup is the third biggest quadrennial global sporting event, and we’re excited to be partnering with them as the event is hosted in Asia [Japan] for the first time in 2019.”

MORE THAN A FEELING RACING-INSPIRED ENGINEERING Through its nearly mile-long straightaway and twelve unforgiving corners, the Fuji Speedway in Japan is our proving ground for performance. And it is from this world-renowned racetrack, and the silhouettes of the curves themselves, that our F SPORT range takes its name. From the muscular exterior design and sports-focused interiors to the expressive mesh grille and exclusively-tuned handling, every part of an F SPORT vehicle works together to deliver a look and feel of absolute exhilaration. And with special performance enhancements to the brakes, stabiliser bars, suspension, clutch and chassis, every drive is guaranteed to be a thrilling driving experience.
