luxury

For the love of IWC Schaffhausen has partnered with local style connoisseur Kamogelo Mafokwane. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL

K

amo Mafokwane is an authentic voice in the world of digital fashion and beauty content. A fashion blogger, stylist and the founder of luxury platform WILLKATE, Kamo wears many hats. Now, she has joined forces with IWC Schaffhausen to tell a story of craftsmanship and heritage.

A SHARED AESTHETIC

Kamo describes her personal style as "minimal and timelessly elegant", so it's easy to see why she is the perfect fit for the IWC maison. In fact, Kamo has been a member of the IWC Schaffhausen family for the last seven years, so this new partnership represents a strengthened relationship with the brand. When working with luxury brands, Kamo values a few things: a sense of compassion, community, innovation, and inclusivity. And when it comes to style, she certainly has an eye for beauty. Her current favourite timepiece is the Portofino Automatic 37. "I love how minimal and versatile it is, but it also has a timeless look that could be carried out through decades and generations within the family," she says. "It is a watch you can wear on any occasion and still turn heads." The piece exudes a quiet sense of understated luxury and matches Kamo's own aesthetic just perfectly.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT

IWC CEO Christoph Grainger-Herr is excited to see where the maison's strengthened partnership will take them. "Her authenticity and commitment to ideals like community and individuality blend perfectly with our own," he says. And for Kamo, the relationship works seamlessly. "I admire their gravitation towards people who walk their own path and have unique stories to tell. They shine a light on those that make an impact – be it small or big," she says. Making a difference is something that is personally important to Kamo — she works with youth programmes, volunteers on community development projects, and spends a lot of time with the children at Princess Alice Home for Children in Johannesburg.

SPOTLIGHT ON OMEGA

Black Black OMEGA’s Seamaster Diver Co-Axial Master Chronometer 43.5mm is all about the black ceramic. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL THE SEAMASTER PROFESSIONAL DIVER 300M has had a legendary following since the early ‘90s and has always stayed true to its original dive watch design. Over time, however, new materials and movements have been introduced for more modern and contemporary offerings. The 43.5mm model is the latest in the collection and brings with it a distinctive and sculptural aesthetic. The 43.5mm model features a black ceramic case, bezel, wave-pattern dial, crown and helium escape valve. The use of all-over black ceramic gives the timepiece a very distinguished look, while anthracite Super-LumiNova has been used on the diving scale, black PVD indexes, skeleton hands and the dot at 12H to ensure visibility without compromising on the aesthetic. An integrated black rubber strap with a black ceramic buckle completes the look. The OMEGA’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 8806 is visible through a window made of sapphirecrystal on the wave-edged caseback. The synthetic sapphire crystal is highly scratch-resistant and anti-reflective, making this timepiece extremely durable. The sapphire crystals are produced by

26

means of a process known as flame fusion, in which raw substances are melted with an oxyhydrogen flame. The resulting crystals are incredibly hard and ensure unhindered vision at all times. OMEGA Black Black features a selfwinding movement with a Co-Axial escapement. It is a Certified Master Chronometer, approved by METAS, and is resistant to magnetic fields reaching 15 000 gauss. It features a special luxury finish with rhodium-plated rotor and bridges with Geneva waves in arabesque.

From pastel shades to super-luxe jewels, we’re in love with this season’s watch and jewellery trends. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL

WHAT’S

TRENDING We always love discovering the season’s new trends because each year brings with it some surprising styles and innovations. Something that has certainly become clear in the last year is that the watch industry is a resilient one — despite its challenges, the world of luxury watchmaking has not compromised on quality, authenticity and style. Similarly, jewellery trends remain hopeful in a time of uncertainty. In fact, brands across the board have had to find inspiration in crisis, and from that, we have seen stronger designs emerge.

G

GENDER NEUTRAL

Conversations around gender identity have impacted many brands, and the growing popularity of unisex styles and gender-neutral sizing is a welcome addition to the world of horlogerie. The trend has been further informed by vintage trends and iconic designs that remain relevant today. As such, there’s no longer a need to follow traditional watch-wearing rules as there’s much more freedom to choose pieces that suit one’s personal aesthetic, regardless of colour, size or style.

GREEN AND BLUE DIALS Pops of colour are proving popular this season, but green, in particular, has been firmly established as the one that’s here to stay. Various shades and tones of green feature on dials across many of the mostloved watch designs, and the use of the hue echoes a trend in fashion. The colour is calming and inspiring, eliciting a much-needed connection to the natural world. Blue dials also remain popular — the shade signifies stability and reliability and works well on both dive watches and sport-inspired models.

PASTEL PALETTES Soft pastels are a fashion favourite, and they have made a comeback this year in fresh new ways. Some of the most contemporary shades include buttermilk, lavender, sky blue and peppermint, all of which feature in many unisex designs. While 2021 is almost certainly the year of the green dial, pastel shades are also big in the world of watches — dials in ice cream and candy hues achieve a playful aesthetic.

30

2021/08/24 09:35

CAMO

The camouflage trend is one that tends to reappear season after season. In fact, the look was first identified by Vogue as early as the 1940s, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that the design really translated into fashion. It’s perhaps inevitable then that camo-inspired designs have made their way into haute horlogerie too. Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts or those who favour function and toughness, camo designs and colour palettes work well on both straps and dials.

DIVE WATCHES

Dive watches have never gone out of style, and they remain a firm favourite this year. And while these timepieces are often loved for their function and durability, there’s no need to compromise on style. In fact, dive watches are among the most sophisticated looking watches available and are as much about their high-tech specifications as they are about making an aesthetic statement.

Unapologetically glamorous watches are most definitely having a moment this year with the release of many super-luxe jewelled pieces — think diamondadorned dials and cases, as well as bracelets dripping in gemstones. And in the world of jewellery, jewelled headbands make a charming statement, while pearls have certainly made a comeback. Statement earrings have also been spotted on many runways, as have flirty fringe pieces in various versions.

Most famous

Stratospheric in calibre and consistency, this is the world’s most famous Champagne. THERE ARE FEW other wine brands in the world as iconic as Dom Pérignon. In fact, this most prestigious Champagne from the house of Moët & Chandon is practically a metaphor for covetable lifestyles, from the royalty who delicately sip it out of the finest crystal stemware to the podium-placed motorcar racers who blasphemously empty magnum bottles of it over each other’s heads in celebration. So, what’s the deal with Dom? And why does a bottle set you back thousands of Rands, at a minimum? For starters, Dom Pérignon is made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes that receive more tender love and care than newborn children. We have the Benedictine monk (and cellar master) after whom Dom Pérignon is named to thank for that. It’s largely his pioneering winemaking techniques that make this famous Champagne so exceptionally good and consistent. Dom Pérignon is also strictly vintage, made during good years from the harvest’s bounty of Oscar-winning grapes (only the very best juice is permitted to pass the sumptuous lips of those iconic and voluptuous bottles). In fact, the standard set is so high that from 1921 to 2009, 88 years, only 43 vintages of Dom Pérignon were produced. (And as any economist will tell you, scarcity adds zeros to price tags.) A well-earned celebratory treat or Tuesday night at the Vanderpump Mansion… call it what you will, but Dom Pérignon is undeniably an icon of luxury and a statement of prestige.

SPOTLIGHT ON ROLEX

A touch of glamour The new Oyster Perpetual Lady-DateJust embodies graceful elegance. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL

ROLEX RECENTLY REVEALED a new gemset version of their Oyster Perpetual LadyDateJust, and the design does not disappoint. The timepiece is crafted in yellow gold, which perfectly showcases the shimmer of diamonds that adorn every surface. This super-luxe piece is for those that love a touch of glamour.

A CAPTIVATING SHINE

The case of this gorgeous watch is set with no less than 158 brilliant-cut diamonds, while the bezel features 44 diamonds, and the bracelet sparkles with a further 596 diamonds. The dial, which is paved with 291 diamonds, features yellow gold numerals with a black finish. The result is a truly striking piece ideal for those who don’t shy away from glitz. While the watch is sure to turn heads, there is much more to it than its aesthetic charm. It’s equipped with calibre 2236, a movement that is at the forefront of watchmaking technology. Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual Lady-DateJust also carries the Superlative Chronometer certification. The caseback, which is edged in fine fluting, is hermetically screwed down in a way that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access. The case is waterproof and provides optimal protection for the watch’s movement.

ONLY WATCH BY WASEEM RAVAT Waseem Ravat, founder and owner of S.A.’s largest watch blog, Watch Maniac, is an avid collector and blogger with a wealth of knowledge of the industry.

O

nly Watch is one of the most momentous events in the horological calendar for watch enthusiasts worldwide. Founded in 2005 and organized by Luc Pettavino, President of the Association Monégasque Contre les Myopathies, under the Patronage of His Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco, Only Watch is a biennial charity auction of unique timepieces created by some of the most prestigious watch manufacturers with the sole purpose of benefitting research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Hosted by internationally renowned auction house Christie's, and with more than €70 Million already raised in the past eight editions, the 2021 event set to take place in Geneva on the 6th of November will be nothing short of spectacular. With a total of 54 watch brands participating and Orange being the colour representing the 2021 edition, the range will first be on display at the Monaco Yacht Show in September as a promotional exhibition tour before making its way to Dubai, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong and finally, The Four Seasons hotel in Geneva, where it will go under the hammer.

BELL & ROSS BR-01 CYBER SKULL SAPPHIRE ONLY WATCH Leaving nothing to the imagination, Bell & Ross chose a fully transparent approach using sapphire for its 2021 contribution. Carved out of 3 blocks of clear sapphire to create its outer case, all attention falls on its bright orange dial (or lack thereof). Machined out of 6 blocks of sapphire to create the skull, jaw and crossbones, this avant-garde design creates a clean yet striking and lively 3D like faceted design. Equipped with a proprietary movement designed in the shape of a skull, the BR-CAL.206 handwound movement offers the same effect as seen in the Bell & Ross "Laughing Skull", an animation that sneakily allows the jaw of the skull to open and close as the watch is wound or unwound. Bad to the bone, I'd say... Reference: BR01-CSK-OW-SAPHIR Auction Estimate : $98 000 - $120 000

AUDEMARS PIGUET ROYAL OAK 15202XT “JUMBO”

After CEO of Audemars Piguet, François Bennahmias, announced earlier this year that one of the most iconic models of the Royal Oak range, reference 15202ST,, would be discontinued and replaced by an entirely new model in 2022, it's no surprise that Audemars Piguet will be honouring the model one final time. Unlike the standard Royal Oak 15202 models, which come in steel or precious metals, the 15202XT for Only Watch is created from sandblasted titanium. Tucked in the standard 39mm x 8.1mm case lies a dark grey vintage-inspired dial using Audemars Piguet's signature "Petite Tapisserie" pattern. For me, what I truly find amazing is that A.P. has merged the old with the new in this model, heralding the use of a new palladium-based alloy, known as "bulk metallic glass", which can be found in the bezel screws, caseback and bracelet studs, whilst at the same time still being powered by the current Calibre 2121 automatic movement which has been in production since 1972 and set to be discontinued at the end of 2021. A truly special piece that would mark an end of an era by being the last unique 15202 to hold this calibre movement. Reference : 1520XT.GG.1240XT.99 Auction Estimate : $175 000 - $350 000

F.P. JOURNE X FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA FFC BLUE PROTOTYPE Undoubtedly one of the most talked about pieces of 2021, the F.P. Journe FFC Blue. Taking inspiration from a mechanical hand, which was created by the father of modern surgery, Ambroise Paré (1509 -1590). It all came to life in 2012 at a dinner table when Francis Ford Coppola asked François-Paul Journe if it’s possible to tell time using a mechanical hand in a watch. Driven by the complexity of the challenge to display 12 hours with just five fingers, and after years of research, F.P. Journe took on the task and thus the FFC Prototype was born. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the automatic Octa Calibre 1300 movement, F.P. Journe has managed to power the automaton solely by the Octa movements mainspring. Housed in a tantalum casing developed exclusively for Only Watch, perfectly paired up with an orange alligator strap that complements its skeletonized dial, the FFC prototype definitely changes the way we tell time. BVLGARI OCTO FINISSIMO PERPETUAL CALENDAR TANTALUM Participating for the first time at Only Watch, Bvlgari has chosen its multiple record winning timepiece, the Octo Finissimo. Unveiled at Watches and Wonders earlier this year, the Octo Finissimo range took its 7th World record by unveiling the thinnest perpetual calendar watch ever produced, at just 5.8mm thick. Created from one of the rarest metals available, Tantalum, a rare, hard, bluish grey material that is highly corrosion resistant and mainly found in medical engineering. Powered by a 2.75mm thin recordbreaking calibre movement which features a retrograde day, date and month feature and holds a 60-hour power reserve, this masterpiece delivers a massive punch. Fitted on a sapphire blue alligator leather strap to complement its tantalum casing, Bvlgari got a little playful by using a hint of the Only Watch orange scheme on the dial. Those who appreciate attention to detail would notice the letters “O.W.” in “November”, which stand for Only Watch. Smart hey…?! RICHARD MILLE 67–02 CHARLES LECLERC PROTOTYPE Every watch enthusiast knows being able to own a Richard Mille timepiece is special and no ordinary feat, but what can a high-end luxury brand, which is on the wrist of some of the biggest professional athletes around the world, offer for an event like Only Watch…? The R.M. 67-02 Charles Leclerc Prototype! Developed as a “second skin” for the Monégasque Ferrari F1 driver, Charles Leclerc. Richard Mille will allow one mega collector the opportunity of owning an actual prototype. Created to adapt to the various challenges the fast-paced world of F1 racing has to offer, the extra-flat, lightweight, elegant watch is created from a white and red quartz TPT composite material and Grade 5 Titanium which offer exceptional shock resistance, making it the lightest automatic watch in the Richard Mille range. Weighing in at a mere 32 grams, the dial bridges are hand-painted in the colours of Leclerc’s flag matched with a red seamless, non-slip “comfort strap”. You might wonder what more could a person, owning a prototype that has helped a brand like Richard Mille “test new technical solutions for its future models”, ask for? Well, the future owner will also receive two passes for the next F1 Monaco Grand Prix as guests of Scuderia Ferrari and have the opportunity to meet Charles Leclerc. I guess money does buy happiness... Reference : RM 67-02 Charles Leclerc Prototype Auction Estimate : $295 000 - $360 000

Corum’s Golden Bridge BY ELIZABETH DOERR

PHOTO: GUY LUCAS DE PESLOUAN

DARING ARTISTRY, DIAPHANOUS CHARM:

Elizabeth Doerr, editor-in-chief of QuillandPad.com, is the author of Bridging Art and Mechanics: The Unabridged Story of Corum's Golden Bridge.

COUNTERING THE QUARTZ CRISIS of the late 1970s, the Golden Bridge firmly put Corum on the haute horlogerie map with an innovative, single-bridge, baguette-shaped movement created by independent watchmaker Vincent Calabrese. Measuring just 33 x 3 x 4.9mm, Corum encased it entirely in hand-faceted sapphire crystal held together by two bases of yellow gold and four golden screws, allowing the observer to admire this horological work of art from every angle. Awarded seven patents, it contained the industry's first movement in 18-karat gold and was the first watch fully enclosed in sapphire crystal, revealing not only its mechanics but the independent watchmaker who invented it. The Golden Bridge was more than just a timepiece; it was a message that both the work and the name of the watchmaker must be hidden no longer and that mechanics and art can coexist to make a beautiful, wearable object. Certainly one of the watch world's most unique watches, it has been in continuous production since 1980, qualifying it as a rare evergreen. This fascinating timekeeper continues to assert itself in the modern era of contemporary watchmaking as a consummate technical and aesthetic jewel in refreshed versions. The transparency of the case's sapphire crystal "walls" continue to reveal an awe-inspiring spectacle of miniaturization. Forty-one years later, the most recent set of limitededition Golden Bridge models adds inventive automatic winding and a more futuristic look courtesy of black DLCcoated titanium in combination with a choice of red or white gold and even diamonds housing a sapphire crystal that now extends around the front and sides in one piece – bridging the divide between the past and the present in a magnificent way.

WHAT’S NEW FROM

Patek Philippe? World-class watchmakers Patek Philippe never fail to impress with their new designs and innovations. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL

WHEN IT COMES to watchmaking expertise, the artisans at Patek Philippe are true masters. Steeped in tradition but unafraid of new technologies and methods, the maison is constantly revealing new designs that balance the timeless with the contemporary. We take a look at some of the latest additions to new and existing collections.

RARE HANDCRAFTS

To celebrate the occasion of the “Rare Handcrafts 20202021” exhibition, Patek Philippe presents a collection of grand complication timepieces or icons of watch design. The pieces feature artistic decorations, including manual engraving, grand feu cloisonné enamel, manual guilloche and gem setting. Part of this collection, the new 7040/250G Grand Complications is a white gold ladies minute repeater with a highly refined exterior. It features a gold dial plate that has been hand-guilloched with a beautiful swirling pattern and coated with transparent blue enamel. The underlying decoration reveals a rare technique known as flinqué enamel.

58_Patek Philippe.indd 58

AQUANAUT

First launched in 1997, the Aquanaut collection is young, modern and unexpected. The collection has recently welcomed a new ladies travel watch — the 5269/200R features a quartz movement, a discreet and practical crown adjustment, and an elegant rose gold case. The matte white dial and an integrated composite strap complete the sophisticated look. The bezel is lit up with 48 diamonds for an extra-luxe aesthetic.

2021/08/24 10:01

CALATRAVA

The Calatrava collection is all about pure lines — the design is recognised as the essence of the round wristwatch and one of the finest symbols of the Patek Philippe style. The 6119G manual winding model gives fresh momentum to the iconic model with a guilloched hobnail pattern, a slightly larger diameter and new reinterpretation that takes on a more contemporary spirit. The timepiece features white gold hour markers and dauphine-style hour and minute hands for a sleek aesthetic. The white gold case boasts a new manually wound movement and a power reserve of 65 hours.

NAUTILUS

Sporty and elegant, the Nautilus collection features a rounded octagonal bezel and a horizontally embossed dial. The collection was first launched in 1976 and have since included a beautiful range of models for men and women. The new Nautilus Travel Time Chronograph 5990/1 in rose gold features a sunburst blue dial, batonstyle hands, and an embossed horizontal pattern. It also combines three sought-after complications: a selfwinding flyback chronograph, a Travel Time function, and a date display.

TWENTY-4

The Twenty-4 collection comprises ladies quartz and automatic watches. First released in 1999, the collection is the epitome of timeless elegance. The pieces are designed with the young, active and modern woman in mind. The 7300/1200A self-winding model is available in a new steel version with an olive-green dial. The bezel features two staggered rows of diamonds set according to the exclusive dentelle technique. The gorgeous finishing and sophisticated architecture are visible through a transparent sapphire caseback, while the hand-polished steel bracelet is fitted with a patented fold-over clasp.

Amanda Seyfried celebrates the Reverso One Duetto Moon One woman, many roles; one watch, many moods. BY THEA BECKMAN

IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE HOW MUCH DETAIL AND ARTISTRY CAN BE ETCHED INTO SUCH A SMALL FACE. AND TO HAVE TWO FACES WORK SO SEAMLESSLY IN ONE DESIGN IS EXTRAORDINARY.

Amanda Seyfried 60

NOMINATED AS SUPPORTING Best Actress at both the Golden Globes and Oscars, Amanda Seyfried is an immensely talented actress and singer, appearing in genres that range from comedy to drama and musicals to horror. With her big, expressive blue eyes and a countenance seemingly carved from ivory, this remarkably versatile actress is a true embodiment of elegance, which makes her the perfect partner with which to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Reverso timepiece! Ninety years ago, the Reverso One Duetto Moon by Jaeger-LeCoultre was born, which has since become iconic for its innovative design. The new elegant and contemporary iteration takes much inspiration from the original with a face that can smoothly transform from sun-rayed guilloché front dial during the day to spangled burgundy reverse, complete with moon-phase display and two rows of brilliant-cut diamonds, at night. These two diametrically opposed faces are ensconced within a graceful, elongated design crafted from pink gold. Together, they work seamlessly as a perfect adornment for the wrist of a woman who is not only as masterfully talented as Amanda Seyfried but as versatile too, ready to play any role, day or night.

SPOTLIGHT ON SWATCH BIOCERAMIC

TAKE ONE-THIRD of bio-sourced plastic, mix in two-thirds ceramic powder, and voila – a bold watch uniting the best of both worlds and offering a fresh take on keeping time. Swiss watchmaker Swatch introduced this innovative new composite material called “bioceramic”, and it’s available in the BIG BOLD product line. Fashioned from bioceramic, the BIG BOLD BIOCERAMIC collection adds even bolder characteristics to a watch range inspired by bold ideas and designed for even bolder personalities. As its namesake would suggest, the BIG BOLD BIOCERAMIC is a substantial watch, with a transparent case measuring 47mm in diameter and 11.75mm deep. However, thanks to its lightweight design and soft-to-the-touch feel, the BIG BOLD BIOCERAMIC is a comfortable watch for everyday wear. And when wearing it, the BIG BOLD BIOCERAMIC most certainly captures attention, thanks to its standout colours and, once drawn in, the large, luminescent hour and minute hands and intricate Swiss quartz mechanism. The architecturally structured case provides plenty of room to appreciate the pure and refined characteristics of the BIG BOLD BIOCERAMIC to the fullest. The bracelet, glass and loops are all made from bio-sourced plastic. Featuring a variety of hues, the colour palette includes, among others, white, black, grey and pink. However, lime is the hue currently stealing the, ahem, limelight. The latter colour, Swatch says, is available in limited numbers but is “released in waves”. The Swatch BIG BOLD BIOCERAMIC is a stylish and resilient timekeeper with its contemporary yet detailed design and durable, bio-sourced plastic and ceramic powder construction, and a water resistance rating of 30 metres. Add a pop of colour, and the newest addition to the BIG BOLD range is a stunning piece of wristwear for the summer.

SPOTLIGHT ON CIGA DESIGN X SERIES

BY MARIUS BOONZAIER

A pioneering timepiece

76

CIGA DESIGN PRESENTS the X Series as a piece of contemporary craftsmanship, a study in distinctive design and pioneering watch engineering. The details, components and mechanical parts are designed with absolute purity in mind. Sporting a unique X-shaped skeleton, the X Series integrates an elegantly designed automated mechanism, displayed through sapphire glass at the front and mineral glass at the rear. The sapphire glass is rated at 9 Mohs, making the X Series highly resistant to scratches. The self-winding movement, the Chinese watchmaker says, is the most compact and steady of its kind ever created. The X Series offers a power reserve of approximately 40 hours. The X Series’ dual-shell structure features an innovative four-angle spring distribution arrangement. The pioneering anti-vibration system protects the self-winding mechanism by minimizing the impact of outside forces on the timepiece. CIGA Design offers five versions of the X Series. Fashioned from titanium and treated with diamond-like carbon, the Titanium range – comprising Titanium & Blue and Titanium & Gold, the latter featuring 18k gold finish – is designed for sport and the outdoors. Stainless-steel versions include Black & Purple, Black & Orange and Silver. All models, bar Silver (to enhance its natural brightness), are offered with Super-LumiNova illumination and 3 ATM water resistance. The X Series measures 48mm, including the crown, and 11.8mm thick. Titanium models weigh 58g, while stainless-steel versions weigh a maximum of 77g. Aesthetically packaged, the X Series is sold with a nylon and a silicone wristband.

The new

wild Cartier’s latest piece embodies the suppleness of the panther, and it’s absolutely exquisite. The panther is the symbolic animal of Cartier and has been associated with the brand since its collections in 1914. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL

THE CENTREPIECE OF the La Panthère collection, the panther-head bangle is designed to fit the wrist like a second skin. The bracelet boasts clean lines and curved gold, with a sculptural panther design — the aesthetic is simple and elegant.

THE PANTHER’S AGILITY

The bracelet is flexible and magnetic, a true embodiment of the panther’s suppleness. It can be easily mixed and matched or paired up and is available in two versions: rose gold or yellow gold with diamondpaved on the Head or on the Head and tail. The eyes come in striking emerald or tsavorite garnet. The bracelet can be personalised in several ways — with an engraved message, initials or a date. There is also the option to have the Panthère’s red box embossed and personalised with initials or a significant date in a golden tone on the front of the case.

A MILLION DOLLAR SMILE Cinematic legend, Julia Roberts, lends her iconic smile to Chopard’s new ‘Happy Sport the First’ timepieces.

SECOND ONLY TO the Cheshire Cat of Alice in Wonderland fame, actress Julia Roberts probably has the most dazzling smile in the history of contemporary cinema. So, it’s little wonder Swiss luxury watch and jewellery maker Chopard chose her as the face of its ‘Happy Diamonds’ collection! The collection was originally launched in the 1990s, which was about the time Julia Roberts became everybody’s favourite actress after her performance in ‘Pretty Woman’. But three decades later — and three Golden Globe Awards, an Academy Award, and 58+ movies — she is lending her effervescent joie de vivre to Chopard as it expands its ‘Happy Diamonds’ collection to include the ‘Happy Sport the First’ watch. These sporty, sophisticated, and delightfully vintage timepieces have been released in two limited-edition series. The first, which consists of 1993 pieces, features a polished steel bezel and silver-toned dial, while the second, 788 pieces, a diamond-set bezel and mother-of-pearl dial. Both are offered on a coruscating pebble-link bracelet and include the iconic seven dancing diamonds. Now, the more logical among us might be tempted to sneer at the motto “diamonds are happier when they’re free”, but in fact, this isn’t too far from reality. You see, it’s in freedom of movement that diamonds catch the light, refracting it into its dazzling spectrum of composite colours. And this makes the free-floating diamonds in the ‘Happy Sport the First’ wristwatches positively effervescent with happiness… a most compatible accessory to the twinkle in Julia Robert’s eyes and the glint of her smile.

LOUIS XIII COGNAC

THE THESAURUS

A rich tapestry of history and fantasy.

From the opulent house of LOUIS XIII cognac comes a different kind of treasure: one you can page through while sipping on the finely-tuned liquid craft the brand is known for. The Thesaurus is an intriguing art book curated by London-based publisher ACC ART that chronicles LOUIS XIII cognac's beguiling story (and imagined future). The Thesaurus consists of 13 seasons of two episodes apiece: one dives into LOUIS XIII cognac's history, supported by authentic archive photography and technical records, and the other performs a choreography of fiction, first-hand account, and fantasy. Brought to life with original illustrations, the Thesaurus embarks during the 16th century, tracing the brand's documented history, and concludes in the 22nd century with inspired invention. For example, there's the imagined account of a decanter buried on a 16th-century battlefield in Jarnac; and the conversation between an oak tree and a dryad from deep within the Limousin Forest in 2028. This fantasy is juxtaposed with real archive material showcasing many pivotal moments in the history of LOUIS XIII, such as its passage on the maiden voyage of the SS Normandie and its longstanding associations with royalty. The Thesaurus delivers a grand and complex narrative woven into a rich tapestried experience for the reader. This is most excellently accompanied by the cognac that inspired its artful manifestation.

Useful traditions For the first time, Patek Philippe has released the Annual Calendar in a round Calatrava-style polished case. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL

THE COMPLICATIONS COLLECTION upholds a tradition in complications that are useful in everyday situations — annual calendars, dual time and world time displays, for example. The watchmakers have just released the very first Annual Calendar in a round Calatrava-type polished steel case to suit all wrists.

SHIMMERING REFLECTIONS

The timepiece has a new integrated and entirely polished bracelet with five rows of links, as well as a steel frame and elegant midnight blue dial. The aesthetic of the dial is further enhanced by a double vertical and horizontal satin finish, as well as gold-applied numerals.

FINE FUNCTIONALITY

The 4947/1A model features a selfwinding mechanical movement, and the patented Annual Calendar requires just one correction per year. It boasts a steel case and sapphire crystal caseback, which is water-resistant to 30 metres. The self-winding mechanical movement includes a calibre 324 S QA LU.

LUDUS MAGNUS The Elysium fields beckon at Ludus Magnus in Franschhoek. BY THEA BECKMAN

K

nown as the 'Gourmet Capital of South Africa', it is virtually impossible to visit the Franschhoek winelands without indulging in at least a little gluttony. Even the eyes are treated to feasts of vineyard vistas, explosively colourful fynbos gardens, and dramatic mountainscapes. Tucked away within all of this corpulent beauty is a secluded Elysium that will spoil you with food and wine. This is Ludus Magnus, named after ancient Rome's magnificent gladiatorial training grounds, which would send its sons off to fight in the Colosseum. Of course, this state-of-the-art playground couldn't be any different to its namesake. I mean, the most punishing thing that will happen to you here is having to leave at the end of your stay. Ludus Magnus Villa is ensconced within 500 hectares of gorgeous Franschhoek Valley real estate, at the confluence of two rivers and a waterfall — yes, a waterfall! This is truly a place to devote every waking hour of the day to focus on nothing but you. (And perhaps your family if you happen to bring one along.) Food, wine, nature, and exquisite accommodations… not even the hedonistic ancient Romans could want for anything here.

On the flip side of this deep relaxation is the opportunity to awaken your inner athlete and train your body with renewed vigour, whatever your fitness levels or goals are. Ludus Magnus seamlessly integrates its fitness offerings with Franschhoek's most abundant gift: nature. There's the Olympic training pool that's immersed in a free-flowing freshwater dam, for example. Or the 400-meter running track with heart-breaking views of the surrounding valley. Then there are networks of mountain biking paths, flyfishing, river kayaking, tubing, golfing at nearby golf courses, and an exclusive riverside island deck for well-deserved post-workout chilling. Ludus Magnus even has its very own immaculately maintained rugby field, making it a destination clamoured over by local and visiting international rugby teams. It's all of these fitness activities that have earned this handsome villa the right to call itself Ludus Magnus, which translates from Latin to "great gladiator training grounds."

SUSTAINABLE SUSTENANCE AND OTHER SPOILS

Rest and refreshment are equally as important as physical exertions, which brings me to what happens at Ludus Magnus when guests aren't sweating rivers in the glorious Franschhoek countryside. For starters, the villa is 100% offthe-grid, generating its own electricity, water, and plentiful food sources. The latter includes fresh honey from its very own beehives; free-range eggs from its (happy) rescue chickens; and the fruits of, well, 168 fruit trees that have been planted on these grounds, from plums, mangoes, and apples to avocado, litchi, macadamia nuts, and more. In fact, one of Ludus Magnus' footpaths has been affectionately dubbed the "Vitamin C running trail" because it leads guests past 14 different types of citrus fruit trees! Then, there are aesthetic treatments, poolside massages, on-call butlers, and private chefs to cater for any and every whim. And when you're ready to explore, you have the entire Franschhoek Valley and Cape winelands at your doorstep with no shortage of adventures to be had. Think: wine-tasting in centuries-old cellars, sitting down to sensational multicourse dining experiences, shopping for art in "downtown" Franschhoek, or riding the Franschhoek Wine Tram: next stop, more wine!

THE STUFF OF GLADIATORS

The dashingly handsome Ludus Magnus Villa — a veritable Elysium — is one of the few luxury getaways one can indulge in Franschhoek and actually return home looking more ripped, bronzed, pampered, and manicured than before you arrived. With an abundance of training opportunities embraced by spectacular nature, burning calories is as irresistible as piling them on. But even if it isn't your goal to look like a gladiator at the end of your stay, you will certainly feel like one: triumphant in your newfound peace and tranquillity.

Tribal COLLECTION

The girl who created the stars - the ancient folk tale which provided the first spark of inspiration for Graff’s striking and sensual Tribal collection. This desire to make sense of the world around us through the ancient craft of storytelling resonates throughout the Tribal collection. Taking us on a journey from dawn to dusk, sunrise to sunset, it tells a compelling story that is rooted in humanity. Striking, sculptural motifs define the collection, a contemporary reimagining of universally understood symbols that surround us in nature, using a medium about which Graff is passionate: exceptional diamonds and gems.

Haute fragrances Warm days and balmy nights call for fresh fragrances.

LOUIS VUITTON IMAGINATION

BVLGARI MAN TERRAE ESSENCE

Inspired by the fertile Tuscan soil, the signature scent of the Bvlgari Man Collection is rich and warm. The top notes evoke sunkissed citrus, while the heart notes are a contemporary mix of woody, smoky and floral accords. Base notes are raw and earthy — think leather and resin.

The launch of Imagination represents the House’s seventh fragrance dedicated to men. The scent comprises Ambrox, a molecule in ambergris’s natural state, and bergamot, orange and Sicilian cedar. A rare and precious black tea was selected from China, which contributes notes of grass, straw and a slightly smoky edge.

THE WORLD’S BEST-LOVED HAUTE COUTURE AND WATCH BRANDS CONTINUE TO RELEASE SOME OF THE MOST COVETED SCENTS FOR MEN AND WOMEN. RIVIÈRES DE CARTIER

This collection from Cartier captures the life and raw beauty of water, a source of olfactory reflection. Each fragrance in the range is named for a river: Insouciance, Allégresse and Luxuriance. Allégresse is beautiful and joyful with fresh notes of blackcurrant bud and tuberose, while Insouciance is free and sweet with the scent of irises and violets. Luxuriance is the most complex of the three and brims with nature – expect fern, rosemary and wild herbs for a natural and wild freshness.

BOOK XVII 2019

redesigned

De Toren Private Cellar unleashes the BOOK XVII 2019, redesigned, reimagined, and a revelation. BY THEA BECKMAN DE TOREN IS UNLEASHING the 2019 vintage of its reimagined BOOK XVII Bordeaux-style blend upon the world, and the French better batten down the hatches! Sprawled across the Polkadraai Hills, with front row seats to the spectacular Stellenbosch winelands, De Toren Private Cellar is a boutique winery that was among the first-ever in South Africa to produce wines in the style of Bordeaux, France — full-bodied cabernet sauvignon and merlot-driven red blends. But with such favourable terroir in Stellenbosch, as well as the loving attention De Toren lavishes upon every berry in its vineyards, the estate has developed a reputation for producing Bordeaux blends that not only rival “the originals” but tower over many of them. The proof is in De Toren’s many accolades, including South Africa’s Best Bordeaux Blend and The Highest Ever Rated SA Wines by USA publisher Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Now, the opulent BOOK XVII 2019 has arrived. Clad in exquisite new packaging featuring an original illustration by renowned international artist Steven Noble, this blend truly embodies the exceptional calibre South Africa’s Bordeauxstyle wines are capable of. This is the 10th vintage of the BOOK XVII, and it’s being heralded as one of the very best De Toren Private Cellar has ever seen. The slightly cooler vintage expresses a powerful accumulation of flavour and elegant tannins, and on the nose, waves of sumptuous crème de-cassis, fruitcake, and fig. The promise of seductive power is fulfilled with a full-bodied palate and silky-smooth tannin structure, and an ageing potential of 40+ years. As is befitting of such a rare collector’s treasure, the BOOK XVII 2019 comes in a handcrafted and sealed wooden display case with a key. Inside the bottle, a revelation awaits! À votre santé!

Artist Donald Greig Inspired by the African bush, a voice for vanishing wildlife. BY THEA BECKMAN

BORN INTO A family of fine jewellers and raised surrounded by African wilderness, it almost seems that the art for which Donald Greig is internationally known was preordained. And when you witness his creations, you could do nothing but agree, for Donald Greig has the most exceptional talent for capturing animals in liquid motion. A baboon family with Alpha male languishing on a tree branch; a life-sized blue crane, South Africa’s national bird, midstride; a stately albatross sailing on dipped wing; a leopard lithely crawling up from under a branch, its countenance held to the air as though tasting its various scents. Each sculpture is inspired, life-like, and dynamic, whether small enough to fit in the palm of your hand or true to scale, like the caravan of camels a Dubai Property Developer commissioned him to do, or the life-sized rhino ordered by a private collector in South Africa. Convincing

in its likeness and evocative of living flesh and blood, Donald Greig’s art is a true ode to African wildlife. Even the eyes, cut from inorganic material, appear to glisten with vitality… and if you look at them for long enough, you may just catch them blink. Donald Greig is a sculptor, qualified gemmologist, and jewellery designer by trade, which he administers from his store at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. His formal training at the Lorenzo de Medici School of Art in Florence is evident in the calibre of his work, as well as the traditional casting techniques he uses to craft sculptures that would have made the ancient Greeks drool in envy. But it’s his childhood spent in quiet witness of the African bush and its menagerie of fantastic beasts, both great and small, that quite evidently inspires his art. And in return, he lends a compelling voice to Africa’s vanishing wildlife.

So Haute All of the hottest haute couture trends have made their way into the world of haute horlogerie. BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL

W

hen it comes to this season’s haute couture looks, an eclectic mix of animal prints, embroidered designs and pleats have all taken centre stage. And these striking trends have extended beyond the world of fashion – all of these elements are finding expression in elaborate timepieces as well.

FASHION’S INFLUENCE

The Égérie self-winding timepiece from Vacheron-Constantin is a beautiful reflection of the on-trend pleated motif. The dial reveals an aesthetic similar to a haute couture fabric with a pretty tapestry technique. And the haute couture inspiration doesn’t stop there — the date display and the off-centre moon phases are encircled by diamonds, while the Arabic numerals resemble delicate lace. Unsurprisingly, the Dior designs have been heavily inspired by the fashion world too. The maison is revered for its glorious ballgowns, and the influence on their horlogerie designs is clear. Gem Dior, the latest collection from Victoire de Castellane, is inspired by Mr Dior’s colourful fabric samples. Each piece is made of angular and asymmetrical sections set side-by-side to resemble mineral strata. The collection is a celebration of natural and authentic beauty, and each piece is truly unique.

Global luxury maison Chanel is synonymous with haute couture, and their distinctive style has translated seamlessly to their horlogerie offerings. The signature Chanel tweed made its way onto the strap of the Boy.Friend Skeleton, as well as the dials of the Boy.Friend Tweed Art and Boy.Friend Neo Tweed, all of which were released a few years ago. Now, the theme has continued on the recently launched Tweed fine jewellery collection, which includes a range of secret watches with a style that mirrors the aesthetic of hand-woven wool fabric.

FINER DETAILS

The Happy Diamonds Icons from Chopard are playful pieces that feature transparent sapphire crystals to create the impression that the diamonds are in direct contact with the skin. The new long, supple leather straps wrap twice around the wrist for a unique and charming look. These carefully designed details are reminiscent of a couture garment in both their execution and style.

rose gold case and dial and a rose gold head set with brilliant-cut diamonds and emerald eyes. A true work of art, the unique Inspired by Twombly watch from Graff recreates the free-flowing swirls of the artist Cy Twombly’s paintings. Fluid diamond loops form a stream of brilliance around the wrist, and the piece features both round and baguette-cut diamonds, as well as a pavé diamond dial. The jewels capture the energetic essence of the artist’s work, while the sophistication and incredible craftsmanship of the watch mirror the elegance and style of a runway piece.

Similarly, the Pasha de Cartier watch is an expression of the watchmaker’s very specific techniques — the case, bezel, bracelet and crown protector are all set with brilliant-cut diamonds totalling 8.78 carats. The crown is set with a sapphire, silver flinqué dial, while the diamondshaped hands come in blue steel. The shimmering stones bring to mind the elegant threads and details synonymous with high fashion. Animal print is often a hot favourite on the runways, and Bvlgari has reinterpreted the trend with their Serpenti Seduttori watch. The timepiece is a celebration of the precious snakehead and the captivating qualities of its magnetic eyes. The piece features a

ADVERTORIAL

PROTECTING YOUR LUXURY INVESTMENT DURING UNCERTAIN TIMES COVID-19 INCREASED the coffers of the super-rich, who spend their money on flash properties, fast cars, super yachts, luxury handbags and other goods. “We continue to see that the ultra-high net worth investor, informed by uncertainty, looks for alternative asset classes to diversify portfolios and provide resilient returns throughout different stages of the pandemic,” says Christelle Colman, MD of Elite Risk Acceptances, a subsidiary of Old Mutual Insure. She adds that the ultra-rich tend to underinsure when it comes to luxury items and over-insure against low-risk threats. “This can be especially devastating for those with investments such as property, jewellery, wine or other asset classes.” According to the Wealth Report 2020, published by global real estate firm Knight Frank, SA is the largest wealth market in Africa and the 32nd largest worldwide in terms of total wealth held. It suggests that the SA luxury sector generates revenue of approximately $2 billion per year, making it the largest luxury market in Africa for cars, yachts, clothing, accessories, watches and luxury hotels and lodges. PROPERTY TRENDS The Wealth Report 2021 forecasts a 139% growth in African households earning more than US$100 000 per year between 2020 and 2025, by which time there will be more than 63 400 HNWIs living in South Africa alone. Another global survey by Luxury Portfolio International reveals that as many as half of HNWIs are planning to buy at least one extra luxury property in the coming 12 months, compared to just one-in-five at the start of 2020. Many of these buyers are choosing to invest in South Africa. Furthermore, New World Wealth estimates that over 45% of SA HNWIs either live or have homes on estates. An additional 30% have homes in luxury apartment blocks (which have been the fastest growing residential segment in SA over the past 20 years in terms of price growth). “Assets with high price tags present unique risks to their owners,” says Colman, adding that as the demand for ultra-luxury

HM Ad Template.indd 111

SA homes skyrockets, buyers who are in the market for high value properties should not underestimate the importance of insurance when signing on the dotted line. She adds that properties with expensive price tags should be insured by specialist insurance brokers and underwriters with extensive local knowledge and strong financial backing. Selecting an experienced risk partner is seen as the first step that HNWIs should take to avoid the many insurance pitfalls in the ultra-luxury home segment.A 20% underinsurance on a R20 million home could leave the insured R4 million out-of-pocket in the event of a total loss. Insuring the property at too high a value has consequences too, as the insured will end up paying higher insurance premiums, but only be paid the correct actual replacement value in the event of a loss. “Luxury homes must be insured at their replacement cost, not the market value. The insured value must include the cost of rebuilding the primary building and outbuildings; restoring any landscaping features; and to provide for costs such as professional fees and site clearing, to name a few.”

BUYING HABITS OF THE SUPER WEALTHY, AND THE IMPORTANCE OF INSURING SUPER EXPENSIVE ASSETS In South Africa, the wealthiest investors prefer to have collections in art (approximately $480 million worth of fine art is held by SA’s HNWIs), classic cars, jewellery, fine wine and watches. Watches under the Patek Philippe name brand, both classic and new, fetch the highest prices by HNWIs, according the SA Wealth Report 2020. Diamonds are also coveted property. “If you are lucky enough to be able to afford a high value item such as a diamond ring, make sure that your insurance policy will cover it before buying it, as some insurers won’t take on the risk that comes with an extremely expensive piece,” says Colman, adding that only specialist companies will insure jewellery items over a certain value. A major pitfall for many who buy such items is not regularly reviewing the insured value of the item. Colman says that shockingly, on average people are underinsured by 40%. “A loss on a high value piece like a diamond

can be substantial. This is one of the main reasons why many insured clients are out of pocket when a loss occurs,” says Colman. Colman says that there is also a significant demand for wine and whiskey investments. Bloomberg predicts that cask whiskey is to be one of the biggest alternative investments in 2021, while the Liv-ex Fine Wine 1000 suggests that the value of fine wine has shot up by 200% over the past decade. “Wine and whiskey are low risk investments due to the fact that they are asset-backed, but with high value collections continuing to fetch high prices, it pays to protect such a valued investment.” To protect a wine or whiskey investment, she says investors must store their collection correctly in a temperature-controlled environment. Specific risk coverage can protect against power interruptions, especially if there is no inverter or generator to keep the wine cellar cool during power outages. Colman adds that specialised insurance can also protect against accidental damage if there is breakage, spillage or faulty cellar equipment, such as with wine racks falling over or becoming detached from walls. She advises that investors regularly review the sum at which the wine collection is insured, at least once per year. “This is because if there is accidental damage or a loss of sorts, wine collections that may have cost R1 million years ago now may cost R2 million to replace, which could leave investors out of pocket.” She adds that the replacement value of wine is influenced by various factors; including exchange rates, global trends as well as whether or not wine as an investment class has grown. The price at which the wine was bought is not necessarily used to determine the replacement value, specifically because many investors pay inflated or record prices at auctions or events. “The value of an item is decided by a professional assessor, who uses a wealth of technical data and specialised information to determine the replacement value of wine collections, and to help investors adequately insure their collections at market rates. “If you are looking to maximise the returns of your collection and protect your investment, you’ll need to take steps to preserve its value by insuring properly against risks,” concludes Colman.

Beneath our feet, a coruscating spectrum of treasure. BY THEA BECKMAN

EMSTONE S F

or thousands of years, humankind has adorned our bodies, clothing, and homes with gemstones, from the jade sculptures of ancient China to the exquisite turquoise jewellery of the Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni tribes of North America. In ancient Rome, sapphire, garnet, and pearl amulets were worn to heal the body and mind, while in Egypt, carnelian, chalcedony, lapis lazuli, and jet-black obsidian were used for jewellery, weapons, and communications with their pantheon of gods. Today, gemstones remain an indelible part of almost every

culture on Earth, whether they are used for personal adornment, statements of wealth, or holistic practices, like spiritual healing and cleansing. So, what exactly are they? What makes them so different in appearance and price tag? What’s a birthday gemstone, and which ones are great for everyday wear versus special occasions? Gemstones are essentially rock minerals that have become crystallized under high pressure, the best known and coveted of which are undoubtedly diamonds. Crystallized carbon. The colour within gemstones, diamonds included, comes from chemical impurities that are present during their formation. They can also contain inclusions or small imperfections that can either reduce their price, as is the case with diamonds, or increase it, as is the case with rutilated quartz, which is crystallized silica oxide shot through with needles of richly-coloured titanium dioxide. With such strong ties to the culture, mysticism, and art of ancient civilizations, it’s little wonder that gemstones have evolved to have perceived metaphysical properties. Astrologists believe each gemstone represents a birth month, so if you were born in January, your gemstone is garnet; February – amethyst; March – aquamarine; April – diamond; May – emerald; June - pearl or Alexandrite; July – ruby; August – peridot; September – sapphire; October tourmaline or opal; November: topaz or citrine; and December - Tanzanite, zircon, or turquoise (according to Forbes.com). Of course, this isn’t science. Also, strictly speaking, some of these aren’t even gemstones, like pearl and zircon. True or not, though, a birthday gemstone makes for a considerate gift! As for occasion, topaz and tourmaline, which are affordable and come in a spectrum of colours, are beguiling highlights for everyday outfits, while gemstone royalty like rubies, emeralds, sapphires, and, queen of gemstones, Tanzanite offer opulent and prestigious accoutrements for special occasions. Science, history, culture, art, mythology, and fashion: a closer look at the coruscating treasures beneath our feet reveals a deep rabbit warren of disciplines and important links not only to our most far-flung ancestors but also to each other, across cultures.

T

he LC 500 from Lexus has long borne the title of the sophisticated and mature coupe from this Japanese powerhouse. As per Lexus, 'LC' stands for Luxury Coupe. This it is, without any reasonable doubt, a luxury coupe like no other. With the LC range first making its debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show revealed as the LF-LC Concept, four years later, at the same show, we were introduced to the LC 500. The tone was set that the brand would curb the public's appetite for a coupe that delivers performance and luxurious comfort, all neatly packaged in a GT coupe. Rumours started shortly after that Lexus would introduce a convertible variant, and finally, after waiting with bated breath *gasp!*, in 2019 at the Los Angeles International Auto Show, the LC 500 convertible was introduced. Lexus avoided using over the top and sometimes unnecessary gimmicks to make their first convertible in the LC range stand out. By relying on their Takumi design masters, every detail in the LC 500 convertible has been flawlessly executed to their unprecedented standards. Takumi is an ancient Japanese term that translates to 'artisan'. Produced at their Motomachi facility in Yokohama, Japan, true to its Takumi Master Craftsmanship, every model produced is flawless.

What sets the LC 500 convertible apart from its competitors? The attention to detail in the design, of course. Both exterior and interior. Their next-level luxury finishes are intoxicating! Soft and supple leather adorns the interior, walls and seats. Additional mixed finishes like suede further lend to this showcase of sheer opulence. The thoughtful In-Cabin experience reflects Lexus’ Human-Centred Philosophy. To create an exciting open-air driving experience without hindering conversation, Lexus focused on aerodynamics such as the beltline and rear moulding. In addition, the transparent polycarbonate wind deflector allows for suppressed wind flow inside. Looking at the LC 500 convertible, you would be forgiven for thinking it’s still in concept-car mode. The design is otherworldly. The centre front of the car oozes confidence. The mesh grille on the nose houses the Lexus insignia perfectly. The front and rear lights both are a testament to Lexus pushing design boundaries, finding the balance between functionality and form. This was further achieved with the air vents housed on the side of the car, just before the rear wheel arches. The top comes down in approx. 15 seconds and back up again in 16 seconds. Achieved at a maximum speed of 50 km/h. At the helm of this all, a 5.0L V8 naturally aspirated engine. The transmission is a DirectShift-10 speed auto. Producing 351 kW and 540 N.m of torque. Delivering a top speed of 270 km/h. *South African specifications may differ.

JAPANESE FINESSE BY MARIUS BOONZAIER

T

he first iteration of Lexus’ flagship luxury saloon – the LS – made its global debut in 1989 and introduced Japanese flair to a segment largely comprising already accomplished yet seemingly conservative luxury saloons of German and British descent. Now in its sixth generation and recently handed a mid-cycle update, the LS continues to build on the finesse – in terms of both elegant exterior and interior designs, technological advancements and poised driving characteristics – for which its moniker became recognised for.

According to Lexus, the revisions it has made to the LS has exceptionally enhanced the luxury saloon’s levels of overall comfort and refinement, while a fine balance with performance has been maintained. Said Akio Toyoda, chief branding officer and master driver at Lexus, “[the LS is] a model that gives rise to transformation through the spirit of constant innovation and by providing new technologies and value for the times.” The South African arm of the Japanese luxury car manufacturer offers the choice of three LS derivatives, the LS 500 F SPORT, a more dynamically inclined model which was first introduced to the local LS lineup in 2019, the LS 500, and the LS 500h. All models feature Lexus’ comprehensive seven-year/105 000 km warranty and maintenance plan. Inspired by traditional Japanese etching, the facelifted Lexus LS’s spindle grille has been intricately designed and features more than 5 000 individual surfaces, all arranged by hand, with a similar amount of individual facets, precisely calibrated by Lexus’ Takumi craftspeople to catch and reflect light seamlessly. Flanking the latter item, a set of ultra-compact triple-beam LED headlamps, which incorporate intelligent high-beam technology and striking daytime-running lights, complement the contours of the three-dimensional grille. According to Lexus, the light units’ unique visual arrangement is a new approach to headlamp design and improves both the breadth and dimension of light distribution. The rear end of the LS is accentuated by aerodynamically sculpted LED taillamps. The F SPORT model, meanwhile, features model-specific trim to complement its dynamic persona. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of hospitality omotenashi, the LS’s interior is tailored to provide occupants with a comfortable atmosphere. The LS range is now equipped with a 12.3-inch touchenabled (for improved operability) infotainment display, replete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A Mark Levinson surround sound system is included. As standard, the LS F SPORT features dualzone automatic air conditioning and

ventilated front seats. The top-of-the-line model upgrades to, among others, four-zone climate control and massage functionality for the fore and (now ventilated) aft pews. Ten airbags and an array of advanced driver assistance systems make up the suite of safety items. A newly developed adaptive variable suspension solenoid enhances onroad comfort. Both models are endowed with Lexus’ 3.5-litre twin-turbo-petrol V6 engine, specifically designed for the LS. The D-4ST fuel-injection motor directs 310 kW and 600 N.m of torque, the latter available from a lowly 1 600 r/min, exclusively to the rear wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. According to Lexus, thanks to the engine’s greater acceleration response and self-shifter’s improved shift timing, the duo of LS’s can complete the zero to 100 km/h sprint in 5.0 seconds before reaching a maximum speed of 250 km/h. Lexus claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 9.5 L/100 km. The LS is only the second model in Lexus’ portfolio underpinned by the luxury marque’s GA-L platform, first seen on the LC coupé and convertible grand tourers. The XF50-generation LS’s elegantly designed bodywork measures 5 235 mm bow to stern, 1 900 mm wide and 1 450 mm in height. The wheelbase, meanwhile, measures 3 125 mm. Boot space for the F SPORT and LS is rated at 480 litres and 440 litres, respectively.

THE LAST WORD BY RYAN O’CONNOR

Ryan O’Connor is an award-winning radio personality, corporate MC and serious watch enthusiast.

Messe Basel, home of the Baselworld Watch & Jewellery Show

17 MARCH 2016, 23 March 2017, 22 March 2018, 21 March 2019, and 8 April 2021… unless they happen to be your birthday, these dates may seem perfectly random. But for people like me, they may as well have been the 25th of December. Why? Because on these dates (2020 was unsurprisingly cancelled), the highly anticipated Baselworld Watch & Jewellery Show opened its doors to the public. Being a collector of prestigious watch brands, you can now understand the reference to Christmas, mainly because it’s during this event that my very favourite brand, Rolex, unleashed its new models upon the world. I always do my best to get my hands on a new release from Rolex and my other favourite manufacturer, Apple. Rolex goes without saying. It’s one of the world’s most iconic watch brands that says more about your personal style than the rest of your outfit put together. As for Apple, who doesn’t love a device that does everything for you. The thing is, where buying an Apple Watch is as easy as waltzing into an Apple store, acquiring a Rolex is a task better suited to archaeologist Indiana Jones. In fact, Rolex’s waiting

130

lists are so infamous, there is a saying that you don’t pass your Rolex on to your children, but rather your place on the waiting list to buy one. The good news is that it finally happened for me. I got the call from my authorised dealer to collect my new 2021 Rolex GMT-Master II 126710BLRO on Oystersteel. The bad news is that it practically cost me a kidney… but that’s okay because you can’t put a price tag on the feeling of stepping out with one of the world’s most iconic watch brands on your wrist. And that’s it really: one doesn’t buy Rolex to be financially responsible. Heck, one doesn’t even buy Rolex to tell the time. You buy Rolex so that you can wear a timeless artefact on your wrist that is not only intricately beautiful but is also a powerful, resonating statement of personal style. You buy Rolex to own proof of humankind’s mastery within the realm of microengineering, and that’s a language that’s understood in just about every country in the world. This is why I’m a super watch fanatic. It’s also why my Apple Watch keeps pinging me with messages from my accountant. I’ve got some explaining to do.
