WHAT’S HOT ART

Three Cape Town-based artists each create work inspired and influenced by the city’s people and places. With a combination of mediums, these artists tell the stories of a city and their relationship with it.

SCENE Lisette Forsyth

Lisette Forsyth studied Graphic Design at The Cape Technikon, majoring in photography and printmaking. Working from a studio in Woodstock, the artist takes her inspiration from the daily lives of the people who inhabit this working-class area of Cape Town. A passionate recycler, Lisette uses a wide range of materials to create each of her pieces, including pages from books and historical newspaper, scarred wood, rusted steel and builders’ planks. Her work generates a dialogue between the people she illustrates and the documents and materials carefully chosen as the surface for each piece of art. The weathered buildings and streets of this workingclass area of Cape Town all find their way onto the artist’s selected ‘canvas’. She describes her art process as giving her a fulfilling outlet for her creative energy. Lisette has exhibited across South Africa and internationally at galleries in New York, Portugal and Munich. 30 SOUTHERN VINES AUTUMN 2020

Kitty Dorje

Kitty Dorje graduated from the University of Cape Town with an honour’s degree in Fine Art, and from the Cape Peninsula Technikon with a diploma in Graphic Design. Kitty creates unique ink drawings, some of the latest of which are inspired by places in Cape Town, including Kirstenbosch and The Company’s Gardens. Her process involves collecting objects that she finds and taking photographs while out walking, which she later uses as sources of inspiration for her artwork. Besides ink, Kitty also works in other mediums, including printmaking and painting. Kitty describes creating art as a language and a way in which she can communicate with people — for her, the process always creates a good energy and is a means of expression. Gary Frier

Gary Frier was born and bred in Cape Town and qualified as a graphic designer from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. He worked in various design industries before beginning to create his own personal art. Gary has exhibited his work both locally and abroad, including spaces in Kenya and the Netherlands. Besides his work as an artist, Gary also teaches Art at The Observatory Neighbourhood Afterschool Programme, an NGO that provides educational and cultural programmes for youth at risk; and in the occupational therapy department at Valkenburg Psychiatric Hospital. Gary creates painted portraits, and he makes use of vivid colours, as well as an interesting combination of references to contemporary and historical Africa. A visit to the vertical horizon of Franschhoek’s and the Cape’s culinary scene. BY THEA BECKMAN

L

eeu Estates in Franschhoek operate at the thermospheric echelons of hospitality. Within the giddy, seemingly low oxygen atmosphere of this luxurious hotel, guests glide about enjoying a standard of sophistication and sumptuousness that is without parallel in the Cape Winelands. With the burdens of the “real world” left at the door to the elegant Manor House, it even feels as though the laws of gravity have decided to take a day off from their incessant, super eon-long job of keeping one’s feet planted firmly on the ground. And it is here that Chef

Darren Badenhorst, with Chef Oelof Vorster heading up the kitchen, has opened his new restaurant Le chêne.

A masterpiece of visual perspective

Le chêne, meaning “the oak”, is named after the great oak tree that towers above the northeastfacing façade of the Manor House. From this vantage point unfurls a splendiferous view of impeccably kept emerald lawns, bushes clipped into geometric shapes, and sculptures in fluid motion flanked on both sides by vineyards ablaze with summer leaves and white agapanthus flowers.

flavours and juxtaposed textures. And for my partner: the rich, creamy, and earthy burrata salad with saffron heirloom tomato ragout and wild rosemary shortbread. We paired the ceviche with the stone fruit and citrusy Mullineux & Leeu Granite Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2018 and the burrata with the headily floral fragranced Kloof Street Swartland Rouge 2018.

A line of trees shields the eye from the neighbouring wine cellar, but no amount of foliage can render discrete the sheer and impressive countenance of the Wemmershoek Mountains, which rear up on the opposing side of this historic wine valley. Le chêne is perfectly positioned for guests to drink in this visual masterpiece, and with a glass-wrapped conservatory and generous outdoor patio for seating, it can be enjoyed irrespective of the weather.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner is served

Catering to Leeu Estates’ hotel guests, Le chêne serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but non-resident guests are welcome to make reservations. We attended a lunch service and had a choice of a two (R450) or three-course (R550) meal from the à la carte menu or the seven-course tasting menu for R895 or R1490 with wines from Leeu Estates’ partner wine cellar, Mullineux & Leeu. We decided to order à la carte and embarked upon our three-course taste odyssey at Le chêne with starters of beetroot-cured sustainable sea bass ceviche with avocado emulsion, citrus pearls, yuzu mayo, estate micro herbs, and sorghum popcorn (below) for me – a delicious balance of vibrant

The main event and sweet finale

For mains, my partner chose the melt-in-yourmouth 18-hour confit Karoo lamb neck, deboned and cooked in its own fat, and served with mountain nettle and river cress purée, edamame beans, raw Brussels sprout leaves for texture, and pearl onion cups filled with rich, savoury lamb jus gras (above). I had the springbok loin, cooked to tender perfection and served on a bed of miso marmalade with a nest of dehydrated leeks, beetroot carpaccio, carrot and cardamom purée, lamb jus, and porcini dust for accents. The wine pairing for both was the perfumed and spicy, black fruit forward Mullineux & Leeu Syrah 2017. The sweet finale for me was a “tribute to local honey”, which won the eternal love and affection of my inner Pooh bear: a Bavarois bar dotted with local honey, and served with molten glaze, brûlée meringue, rose caviar, and bee pollen – tiny powdery nuggets bursting with floral flavours (right).

Taking Franschhoek to new gourmet heights

With the successful launch of Le chêne, Leeu Estates and Chef Darren Badenhorst (previously of Grand Provence and the current chef-patron of le coin Français) haven’t only reinforced Franschhoek’s title as the Gourmet Capital of South Africa; they have taken it to new heights. And it is here, perched on the skirts of the Dassenberg Mountains that diners are left breathless with the restaurant’s views, opulent surroundings, exemplary service, and flavourful, South African inspired, French-executed dishes. SV

My partner chose the summer berries, which was as fresh, fruity, and summery as its name suggests. Both courses were paired with the honey-sweet Mullineux & Leeu Straw Wine 2017. And, like a kiss goodbye from the kitchen, we were treated to two chocolate and hazelnut petit fours perched on stones in a bowl filled with oak leaves (a tribute to Le chêne), dry ice, and water for a touch of drama. Each dish was beautiful to behold and just as beautiful to savour while dismantling with knife and fork.

The Melting Pot Cafeteria

After the success of their pop-up eatery on Loop Street, owner-chef John Van Zyl (of Chefs Warehouse and Thali) decided to open a permanent restaurant on Wale Street with his two chef friends, Stefan Roos (of Terroir, Thali, Kole and Deeg) and Sage Fell (partner and food-loverturned-chef). Thus, The Melting Pot Cafeteria was born! Located a short, three-minute walk from colourful Bo Kaap, The Melting Pot is a laid-back spot with a menu featuring dishes and culinary delights from all over the world (hence its name). Here, you can sit down to a street food-inspired feast with flavourful plates borrowed from Mexico, Argentina, and Japan to Thailand and America. Candace and William MarshallSmith decided to renovate their Cape Town home while Candace was still energised after the renovation of her fine art gallery, SMITH, in the historic city centre. Not long after moving from Johannesburg to Cape Town with their young family, Candace and William found a house in a wonderful spot in Oranjezicht in Cape Town’s City Bowl. The house itself was a fairly unremarkable 1970s doublestorey. “It looked like a school building,” laughs Candace, “but it had a wonderful sense of space, which is rare in Cape Town. It had incredible views of the city and Lion’s Head to one side, and it’s right at the foot of Table Mountain.” A terraced rocky garden with a beautiful stone staircase seems to bring the mountain right down to the edge of the house, giving it a strong presence and sense of place. Yet, somehow, it’s potential had been overlooked, perhaps because of its inelegant architecture. But the position and 360-degree views were enough for Candace and William. “I just remember being astonished at the views,” says Candace. And they could see potential in some of the late mid-century features. Nevertheless, she and William didn’t renovate immediately. “We lived in it for three years,” she says. “We had time to consider what we wanted to do.” Besides, Candace was rather taken up with the launch of her gallery in a beautiful, idiosyncratic heritage building in Church Street in the historic city centre. The front lounge opens onto the deck, which takes in spectacular

views of the city and the harbour beyond. This open-plan arrangement is furnished predominantly with mid-century pieces, in amongst an eclectic collection of sleek, clean-lined contemporary pieces. “Christine found these beautiful chairs on auction,” says Candace, referring to the restored Danish modernist armchairs. “We had them recovered.” The cobbler’s table was a gift from a friend of Candace’s late mother. The curved sofa and daybed were designed and produced by interior designer Christine Joubert. The ceramic plant pot is by Vorster & Braye. The artwork above is by Dale Lawrence.

The kitchen opens partially to the lounge, with a kitchen peninsula/breakfast bar forming a low barrier between them, which usefully demarcates the space while keeping the treetop view through a picture window unobscured. Timber sliding doors open onto a nook on the north-facing balcony, where you can still enjoy the views of Lion’s Head and the city, even when it’s windy. The joinery was by Coastal Kitchens Cape Town. The bars stools are from Stokperd. The ceramics on the counter are from Vorster & Braye.

In the living room, a beautiful double-volume space with

huge floor-to-ceiling windows lets in views of Table Mountain as it cascades right down to the house. “We have a lot of glazing and no eaves,” says Candace, so the views are vast and unobstructed. The light on this side of the house is soft and indirect, so it doesn’t get too hot. Candace was adamant that she wanted to retain the original window with its grid of timber frames, which let in views and light. Architects Stuart Thompson and Matt Pretorius extended it with a complementary asymmetrical grid of floor-to-ceiling windows. The furnishings combine reupholstered pieces from the family’s original collection (such as the green velvet armchairs) with midcentury pieces designed and madeup by decorator Christine Joubert or sourced on the auction market. Natural textures, such as the handwoven grass carpet, stone coffee table and timber panelling create a muted, neutral palette that allows the views full expression.

We are spoilt for choice when it comes to the variety of local and sustainable produce available to us in Cape Town, so with just a little effort, it’s possible to whip up a meal with some of the area’s finest products. By choosing local rather than imported foods, you support nearby farms, plus you’re more likely to enjoy fresh ingredients that haven’t travelled far or been stored for long periods of time. Some of the best spots in Cape Town to source local produce include the Oranjezicht City Farm Market in Granger Bay, where you’ll find a wide selection of produce from local farmers and artisanal food producers; The Urban Farmer in Kenilworth, which stocks organic, pasture-reared meat, dairy and free-range eggs, and fruits and vegetables grown by farmers around the Western Cape; and Back Area Gardens at the Oude Molen Eco Village in Pinelands, which sells fruits, vegetables and herbs that are grown on the farm.

Consider organic wines

Make your dinner party extra special by serving organic local wines — again, Capetonians are spoilt when it comes to the available options. The vineyards at Reyneke near Stellenbosch are free from herbicides, pesticides and fungicides. They grow companion plants among the vines to outcompete the weeds instead of spraying and let ducks loose to combat pests like snails and insects. Waverley Hills, located between Tulbagh and Ceres, also produces organic wines. They fertilise with composts and manures and allow certain indigenous plants to grow near to the vines, providing food and habitat to a diverse ecosystem. Minimise food waste

Instead of throwing your food scraps away when preparing your meal, save bits like vegetable peels and eggs shells for compost. If you don’t already have your own composting bin, it’s worth noting that The City of Cape Town runs the Home Composting Programme, which provides free home composting containers to residents. If you live in a qualifying property, you have the opportunity to apply for and collect a composting container to use at home. Since the start of the programme in 2016, more than 20 000 free home composting containers have been distributed throughout the city — if you would like to find out if you’re eligible, you can contact wastewise@capetown.gov.za for more information. When it comes to leftovers, consider sending your guests home with a portion for later. Avoid using single-use plastic and opt instead for reusable containers or paper bags. Thai red vegetable curry with noodles Ingredients Serves 4 tbs vegetable oil 6 ½ onion thinly sliced ½ garlic clove crushed ½ tsp ginger grated 2 tsp red curry paste 1 litre veg stock (homemade or bought) 1 tin coconut milk 2 baby corn, thinly sliced, julienne 2 baby carrots, thinly sliced, julienne 4 baby aubergines quartered 100g sugar snap peas A handful of shimeji mushrooms 2 spring onions sliced longways 1 cup baby spinach washed 1 cup rice/egg noodles precooked and ready 20g fresh chopped coriander 1 tsp. toasted sesames (black or white), optional Method

1 Heat a medium sized pot over

Chef Charmaine Lilje runs two foodie havens in Cape Town — Chardonnay Deli in Constantia and Dalebrook Café in Kalk Bay. Dalebrook Café, located in Kalk Bay, is a farmstall, bakery and rustic restaurant that serves a wide range of healthy and homemade products. With its picturesque sea views, the space is ideal for a leisurely coffee and cake or stay a while and enjoy a meal. The restaurant serves breakfast and lunch daily and is now open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays. If you’re just passing by, be sure to pick up a super juice or smoothie, or for a special treat, indulge in a homemade ice cream made with milk from the nearby Noordhoek dairy.

Poached nectarines with whipped coconut cream Ingredients Serves 6 2 cups verjuice ½ cup water 2 cardamom ½ cup castor sugar ½ cinnamon stick 6 nectarines – firm 2 tins coconut cream – kept in fridge over night 2 tbs icing sugar 50g almonds toasted A few mint leaves Method

1 In a medium 5l sized pot add the

verjuice, water, cardamom, castor sugar and cinnamon stick, bring to boil 2 Add the nectarines, reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes 3 Allow the fruit to cool in the liquid, great to do the day before 4 Remove the fruit, place in fridge until cool 5 Bring the poaching liquid to the boil and reduce by half or until sticky – keep aside to cool 6 Once cooled, for an extra flavour sensation, grill the nectarines on a griddle pan for 1 minute flesh side down 7 Take coconut cream out the fridge and scoop off the cream, leave the liquid in the tin behind; whip in a KitchenAid mixer over a high speed until fluffy and add the icing sugar 8 Refrigerate until ready to serve dessert 9 In a bowl add a nectarine, drizzle some syrup and a dollop of coconut cream, sprinkle some toasted almonds. ver the past decade or so South African wine-lovers would have seen onceforgotten, ubiquitous grape varieties be spectacularly resurrected. Chenin Blanc is probably the most famous of these. Thirty years ago, Chenin Blanc stood at the factory, workhorse end of the local offering being grown in huge volumes throughout the Cape and producing wines of the cheap, cheerful and plentiful variety. Today Chenin Blanc is hipper than a barista-crafted decaf almond milk lattĂŠ on Bree Street, thanks to the new wave of trendy cool winemakers who rediscovered this white grape and put their stylish and original stamps on it and its wines.

On the red side, Cinsault is experiencing a similar resurgence. Once the mainstay of the South African wine industry’s red offering, Cinsault vines were unceremoniously ripped-out in the early 1990s when self-appointed industry visionaries had to make way for more modern cultivars, such as Shiraz. But thirty years later Cinsault is back with a bang, despite its presence in the Cape vineyards having been reduced to a memory of what it once was. If you do find a wine with Cinsault on the label, you can be sure that the producer thereof has meticulously nurtured and crafted the contents to express the features of this classic red grape from southern France.

vigorated Oupa Willem 2018

Oupa Willem might not be the coolest of names for a wine made from a trendy grape, but that is what Ian Naudé from Naudé Wines chose to put on the label of his Cinsault-driven wine released to great local and international acclaim last year. Oupa Willem 2018 is a blend of 80% Cinsault and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, a mix Naudé terms a “heritage blend”. Which is exactly what it is, as the annals of the Cape wine industry record Cinsault as once being an integral part of any local red wine, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon. The name Oupa Willem? Naudé says he was pressured into it. “There was a grandfather of mine named Willem, who I never met,” he says. “Thing is, I had made this wine, and it was bottled. The label had to be printed, but I had no name for the wine. Then the printers called to tell me I was losing my slot in the queue, so I grabbed the first name that came to me, happening to be Oupa Willem. True story.” Oupa Willem 2018 is a classic example of the light elegance the Cinsault grape brings to a wine, while the 20% Cabernet Sauvignon offers a firm base, broadening out the perfumed Cinsault notes and giving a bit of oomph to the overall structure. The Cinsault component was sourced from Darling, while the Cabernet Sauvignon originates from Stellenbosch. Once harvested the fruit was allowed to ferment naturally, with a 40% wholebunch component. The wine was aged in old, seasoned wood allowing the primary grape flavours to come to the fore while giving enough body for further ageing. At a modest 13% alcohol, the Oupa Willem wine is extremely accessible with the friendly fruit-forward approach Cinsault is known for. Red fruits abound, together with a lovely spiciness and touch of potpourri, while the Cabernet Sauvignon element provides a plushness which prevents the wine from becoming too flirty and floral. Although the wine will age gracefully, it is very drinkable right now – Cinsault does not need a grey beard before it shows classic characters. I’d chill it slightly to enhance the freshness and serve the wine with cheese, creamDarling is a small town in a farming area sauced pasta dishes and grilled about 75 km from Cape Town chicken. Pink Valley Rosé

A rosé by any other colour than pink can still be a rosé wine. That is what’s on offer with a new wine name on the block called Pink Valley Rosé, the maiden 2019 vintage of which was released towards the end of last year. Pink on the label, but the wine has an intriguing off-white colour that is rewriting many locals’ expectations of what is to be expected from a rosé. Situated in the Helderberg region of Stellenbosch, Pink Valley is the only winery in South Africa exclusively committed to the making of rosé, something its French owners take very seriously. Said proprietors, Oddo Vins & Domaines, are based in Provence, the ancestral home of rosé, so they and Pink Valley winemaker, SchalkWillem Joubert, know a thing or two of the quaffable blush wine. The first Pink Valley Rosé was made from the 2019 vintage and incorporates the grape varieties Grenache, Shiraz, Sangiovese and Cinsault. Once crushed, the juice only spends 45 minutes in contact with the skins, hence the light onion-skin colour. An extended cooling period before the juice begins fermentation allows the wine to draw an array of invigorating complex flavours while giving the wine that exhilarating freshness which gives rosé its enormous appeal. Pink Valley exudes zingy aromas of citrus peel and fresh white flowers and gushes into the mouth with a life-affirming zeal. Zippy acids rush about the place, while a satisfying cool line of pear, green melon and kiwi-fruit are harnessed in a maritime essence. This is a wine for drinking and spontaneous enjoyment, as is the way rosé is meant to be appreciated. And if you are looking for the best accompaniment to fresh oysters, this may very well be it. Pink Valley Rosé is complemented by the colourful artistry inspired by South African painter Walter Battiss (1906 to 1982), one of South Africa’s foremost abstract painters and someone who would have appreciated the art of this great wine.

Diemersdal Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Red, rosé, and then a white. Diemersdal Estate from Durbanville has taken its Sauvignon Blanc commitments to the next level by now making a wine in Marlborough, New Zealand under its own label. This is not new – Hamilton Russell Vineyards is doing the same with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, still to hit the market. But the Diemersdal Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2019 is here, and it is now. Offering South Africans a taste of one of the world’s most iconic Sauvignon Blanc regions, the Diemersdal Kiwi number exudes restrained notes of guava, granadilla and gooseberry. But these are not over-blown and in-your-face as many New Zealand wines are known to be. The emphasis is on a steely, exciting dry wine from the ends of the earth. Worth trying, as a change is as good as a holiday, jet-lag and all. SV

For a small town, Riebeek Kasteel has a number of good quality restaurants to choose from. The Royal Hotel offers up some classic fare like cheese and antipasti boards to share, as well as crowd-pleasers like homemade crispy gnocchi, slow-braised pork belly, and grilled fish. The hotel is the oldest in the Western Cape, so it’s a good spot to soak up some old-school luxury. Mama Cucina is another popular spot — the restaurant serves freshly made Italian dishes that change daily. In June, the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival, which involves competitive sailing, music and food will be held in Portsoy, while the Fife Regatta will take place in the Clyde Estuary. There are a number of walking routes up the mountain, but it’s also possible to take a gondola ride along the north face for spectacular views of the whole range and, on a clear day, the Inner Hebrides.

See The History

So much of Scotland’s beauty is in its historic architecture, and one of the best ways to really soak in the ancient atmosphere is to visit some of the country’s castles, an activity that can often be coupled with a scenic drive through the countryside. Among the most famous is Edinburgh Castle, which is one of Scotland’s

top tourist attractions and a World Heritage Site. To see ruins dating back as far as the 13th century, you might consider a trip to Castle Sween in Argyll, which is believed to be the oldest castle on the Scottish mainland. Another great spot is Dunnottar Castle in Stonehaven — it sits dramatically on top of a cliff overlooking the sea, making it perfect for pictures.

Taste Some Traditional Food

When it comes to Scottish cuisine, haggis is perhaps the most famous dish that springs to mind, but if that doesn’t appeal, you’ll find plenty of other flavours to try. In fact, each region has its own delicacy worth sampling. The highlands and islands in the northeast of the country are known for their abundant seafood, including langoustines, crabs and scallops, while the west coast boasts fresh, sustainably farmed oysters and mussels. Some of the country’s best dairy products are produced in Dumfries and Galloway, so you’ll find a good selection of ice creams, cheeses and yoghurts in the area’s pretty countryside. Other locally produced foods include Aberdeen Angus beef, salmon, and locally caught smoked haddock. One of the best ways to taste a bit of everything and stock up on

your favourites is to visit a farmer’s market — they are held regularly throughout the country, and many include live cooking demonstrations.

Have A Sip

Whisky is Scotland’s biggest export, so if you’re a fan of the drink, there’s surely no better place for a taste. In fact, the country has over 100 active distilleries across five whisky regions, and it’s possible to take tours to see how it’s made. Unsurprisingly, there are also a number of whisky festivals held each year — the Highland Whisky Festival will take place in May in celebration of the region’s finest distilleries, while

the Edinburgh Whisky Festival will be held in the capital in June. If you’re really committed to the Scottish national drink, you might consider travelling the Speyside Malt Whisky Trail. The route covers seven famous working distilleries, including Glenlivet, Glenfiddich and Glen Moray, as well as a historic distillery and the Speyside Cooperage. SV

A

visit to the top of Table Mountain is practically a rite of passage for Capetonians and for anyone who visits our Atlantic Oceankissed shores. You can scarcely call yourself a local or boast that you’ve visited South Africa’s ‘Mother City’ if you haven’t crested the city’s iconic, internationally recognised mountain. Looming at 1,086 meters above the cityscape and the undulating, blue ocean beyond, Table Mountain cuts a dramatic figure against the sky, both when viewed from the city bowl or from as far afield as the Cape winelands and West Coast. Yet, in spite of her precipitous cliffs, stern, stony countenance, and deep, dangerous gorges, Table Mountain is as beloved a figure to Cape Town as late president Nelson Mandela is to the country.

Journey to the summit

The journey begins at the cableway’s lower ticket station on Tafelberg Road in Gardens (Tablemountain.net) . Tickets per adult cost R200 one-way or R360 (08:00-13:00) or R300 (13:00 till close) return. The cable car’s ascension takes little more than a few minutes, but the scenery en route delivers more drama than an episode of The Bachelor as the ground falls away from beneath your feet and the scale and grandeur of Table Mountain are revealed. The fynbos carpeted foothills rear up to meet craggy sandstone cliffs, and before you know it, your cable car is gently swaying in the wind, perfectly parallel to the mountain’s sheer cliffs. “If the cable had to snap now…” you’ll inevitably think to yourself. But don’t fret: the cable car has an impeccable safety record. Soon enough, it gracefully docks inside the wide-open maw of the cable car station, which squats like a grey gargoyle at the extreme western end of the summit. You have arrived!

A stroll along the summit

Explore the table-topped crown at your leisure via a tangle of well-kept pathways that wind their way between spacious lookouts, tumbles of lichen-splotched sandstone, and blazing stands of fynbos, quivering with endemic bird species such as Cape sugarbird and orangebreasted sunbird. ‘Bakkie’ SHOWDOWN THE

C

irca 1995, it’s a hot summers day in the Northern Transvaal in a little town called Marken. 8-year-old me and my best mate are sitting on the back of my Dad’s Isuzu KB250 single cab bakkie, busy tying our shoelaces after taking a dip in the river. While putting on our shoes my mate asked me a tough question, and I quote: ‘’if your Dad didn’t drive an Isuzu, what car would you have chosen?’’. I sat there for a good minute or so, taking in the magnitude of the said question, and also making sure my old ballie didn’t hear us. In our neck of the woods (literally), there were two teams. Team Isuzu and team Toyota. There was no other option. As kids, we chose sides based on what our parents had parked under the jacaranda tree in the driveway. Up and till that question I was team Isuzu all the way! But then the question was asked, and kids tell no lies. My mate whipped out a packet of car playing cards. They were the monster truck kind. Big, bold American cars. In the mix were a few SUV’s and muscle cars, but the main theme was bakkies/pick-ups. The Dodge RAM being one of the most memorable ones in the deck. While flicking through the cards, out of nowhere, I laid eyes for the very first time on the Ford F150. It was red and white. I’ll never forget it. Think it was a late 80’s or early 90’s model and she

was beautiful. Every loyal bone I had in my body vanished because all I now wanted was an F150. Fast forward a good quarter of a century later and I’m still team Ford, but very much open to the impressive new offerings on the table. Here are 4 of the latest bakkies we get to choose from. Talk about American brute force. This is one mean truck. It 100% looks the part. It has the ground clearance to make you feel like you’re sitting in a big, bad, American monster truck. The cabin has ample space, both legroom and head clearance. It has a nifty (and necessary) little step to help you get in the bakkie with class, and then, of course, you’re greeted with its magnificent exterior. The grille says all you need to know about the Raptor. Once you lay eyes on it, you will see it. The one I test drove had some questionable art decals on the side, but you can get this custom made to suit your liking or just remove it altogether. The pull away was a bit slow, but once you have momentum, there is no stopping you.

Volkswagen launched the Amarok back in 2010. People sat up and took note. It was Volkswagens first real attempt to enter the bakkie market. A year later they won ‘International Pick-Up of the Year’. To this day they still receive awards, not surprising at all. The Amarok Canyon has it all. The orange colour does scream “Ford Wildtrak”, but it works. It has a black trim to finish the paint job off. The footstep on the side is a bit narrow, especially if you’re rocking some Timberlands, other than that though, the VW Amarok Canyon is pure gold.

This trusty old stead has had numerous facelifts since the day my Dad had one, and it’s giving the other boys a run for their money (literally, coming in as the most affordable of the pack). Sure, from a sales point of view, Isuzu is at the lower end of units moved per year, and I don’t know why. Especially looking at models like the D-Max X-Rider Black. Toyota Hilux GR Sport

Just when you think Toyota can’t make the legend Hilux more legendary, they bring out the GR Sport. The GR Sport is fully loaded with the impressive Gazoo Racing suspension, the first Hilux to pack these, which has me over the moon with excitement. Sure, there are a few things I’m not too fond off, again the decals take away from the boldness of the bakkie. I would’ve preferred if it came out in a manual option too, but other than that, I’m well impressed. SV
