IT’S NOT JUST THE NEW AMAROK CONQUERING THE OFF-ROAD.
On the outside, you’ll see the Amarok making tough look effortless. But what you don’t see is the new 3.0 V6 TDI engine with 550Nm of torque, 165kW of power, and an overboost to 180kW. You don’t see the permanent 4MOTION® system or unique off-road ABS, ASR and ESP that ensure a steady ride over even the harshest terrain. You see the action, but you don’t see the 100% German-engineered under-the-skin technology that makes tough possible.
The new Amarok. Not just tough, smart. Range includes: 103kW TDI Comfortline 4x2 and 4MOTION® manual; 132kW BiTDI Highline 4x2 and 4MOTION®, manual and automatic; 132kW BiTDI Highline Plus 4x2 and 4MOTION® automatic; 132kW BiTDI Extreme 4MOTION® automatic; 165kW V6 TDI 4MOTION® automatic available in Highline, Highline Plus and Extreme.

he best time for new beginnings is now. Spring is one of my favourite seasons by far, everything just feels better and looks better, and brighter. This issue transcends exactly that, my favourite issue to date. New inspirations, events to attend, restaurant hot spots, and activities and travel ideas to get us out and about again giving us more reason (as if we needed it) to appreciate our beautiful Cape Town. Good news: We have partnered with Greenpop and have committed to planting 50 trees per edition of Southern Vines!
Greenpop is a nonprofit organisation on a mission to (re)connect people with our planet. They plant trees, grow food, educate people and have fun doing it! They work on urban greening, reforestation, and food growing projects, and educate people through practical workshops. Greenpop was founded in 2010 and has since planted almost 80 000 trees at schools and other urban sites as well as forests and farms across South Africa, Zambia and Tanzania. Visit www.greenpop.org to get involved. Contact me on lauren@southernvines.co.za

JEANNIE KINSLER English born artist, Jeannie Kinsler, moved to Zimbabwe as a young girl where she grew up, later making her home in Durban where she has been painting for the past 12 years. Under the initial guidance of her muse and fellow artist Pascale Chandler, Jeannie learned to see the powerful potential in every subject matter. Drawn to dappled light and movement, Jeannie’s paintings are a figurative and fragmented representation of her fascination with the transience of life. Painting in layers using spliced photographs from which she works; Jeannie’s works are imaginative and largely influenced by luminescence in an attempt to create a perennial interpretation of those fleeting moments.

ART WHAT’S HOT
A transient time of year, marking the lead up to Summer, we hand-picked three artists who embrace the essence of change, through the evocative lark of light and fragmentation, using objects and subjects from nature.
The work of all artists can be seen at StateoftheART Gallery at 50 Buitenkant Street, Cape Town.
MIRANDA CROOKS A featured artist on the Jealous Curator, Miranda Crooks majored in print-making, exhibiting at London’s Cuttlefish Studios and China’s Guanlan Original Printmaking base in the early onset of her career. Miranda’s rural roots have inspired her whimsical works of dream-like botanical images, through an immersive approach. Documenting her surroundings through photographic images, Miranda merges her findings, evolving them into a contrasting effect of rich, vibrant colours and soft watercolour pieces, thus creating a speculative representation of the abundant, natural environment which inspires her works.

KARLA NIXON An M. Tech Fine Art Graduate from the Durban University of Technology, which she completed cum laude, Karla focused on paper cutting as a contemporary art form, for which she has received numerous awards. Aside from the fact that she intricately transforms a banal sheet of paper into a magical man-made structure in a bid to explore existence, Karla shapes her subjects in what is considered one of today’s most consumable, recyclable and fragile commodities. Her chosen imagery, whether it be a portrait created from corrugated card, or a paper-cut industrial building, is a quest to capture the ephemeral moments of existence. SV

N
ews that the brand new La Petite Colombe has recently opened its doors has the Franschhoek foodie world buzzing. The space has replaced The Tasting Room at Le Quartier Français, and headed by chef proprietor Scot Kirton and head chef James Gaag, it’s set to offer the town’s already rich culinary scene something fresh and exciting.
THE PEOPLE “It has always been my dream to open a restaurant in Franschhoek, as it’s where I began my career at Haute Cabriere 15 years ago. So, when the opportunity arose, it was an easy decision to make,” says Scot, who was named the Eat Out Chef of the Year in 2015. Scot has worked in a string of prestigious kitchens, including Savoy Grill in London, the iconic River Cafe, and of course, most recently as head chef at La Colombe along with James Gaag. As the son of a chef, sugar craft and confectionary teacher, James was exposed to all kinds of cooking from a young age, and his experience includes working at Le Manoir aux Quatre Saisons in Oxford. The kitchen at La Petite Colombe will be led by head chef John Norris Rogers, who has worked with Scot for the last five years, and Morne Wessels will head the front of house along with sommelier Andrew Cook.
The focus of the food will remain on locally-sourced and seasonal ingredients, and a good selection of fine and rare wines.
Constantia, or if it is something else entirely. “Guests can look forward to the same quality they would receive at La Colombe in terms of food and service”, says Scot. “But, no dishes will be the same as La Colombe. It will have its own identity. La Petite Colombe will have its own surprises for diners to look forward to.” The focus of the food will remain on locally-sourced and seasonal ingredients, and a good selection of fine and rare wines will be available. “Expect long lazy dining experiences where you can enjoy between six and nine courses,” says Scot. Guests will be spoilt for choice with options like springbok tataki, rum braised pineapple, foie gras parfait, burnt macadamia, and Jerusalem artichoke; or mango glazed quail, smoked mussels, langoustine, and corn. “I’m really looking forward to showcasing new and exciting food in the Franschhoek valley, discovering new suppliers and feeding off the beautiful surrounding for new inspirations,” says head chef John Norris Rogers.
THE LOOK
The restaurant’s interior was done by Rohan Young and Beverley Boswell, who have created a modern country feel. They placed a skylight and lifted the ceilings to enhance the use of natural light, and opened up the kitchen to showcase the state-of-the-art space that was left behind from the previous chef, Margot Janse. “We wanted a relaxed feeling in the dining room, where the food is the real talking point,” says Scot.
THE FOOD So, the question, of course, is whether the new restaurant will mirror the menu and atmosphere of the much-loved and acclaimed La Colombe in
We’re expecting great things from La Petite Colombe, and we’re sure, based on past experiences from the group, that we’ll be wowed as usual. SV

A few newcomers to the Cape Town foodie scene. These are our favourites, get out there and give them a go!
THE CRAZY HORSE Located in Cape Town’s trendy Bree Street, The Crazy Horse is an English-style pub serving wholesome, hearty fare, as well as a wide variety of wines and local and international beers. The menu was created by well-known chef Matt Manning and has been carefully curated to fit the space’s gastronomic pub feel. The interior is luxurious, but comfortable, with leather booths, wooden finishes, and a stylish bar area. The food offering ranges from bar snacks like pork scratchings and mustard mayo, and Yorkshire pudding with braised oxtail to lunch meals that change daily, and tasty, traditional English dinners - think chargrilled gammon with a fried egg, roasted honey pineapple and chips; and beef wellington with all the trimmings. There’s also a small dessert menu, with classics like berry trifle, chocolate pudding with vanilla cultured cream and a cheese board with figs. W T

LILY’S This new spot in Mouille Point is an all-day eatery, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a very elegant interior. There is an emphasis on health on the menu, and each dish uses fresh locally-sourced ingredients. If you’re there for breakfast postpromenade jog, try a fresh juice and a wholesome bowl of rolled oats porridge with almond milk, tahini seeds, pear, and honey, or a traditional eggs benedict. For lunch or dinner, there are some lovely vegetarian options - think coconut curry with crispy tofu and shredded vegetables, or the Buddha Bowl with quinoa, kale, baby spinach, garlic, almonds, avocado, halloumi and boiled egg. Or, for something meaty, try the lamb popsicles or the sesame tuna, which is served with sticky coconut rice, wasabi aioli, coleslaw and edamame beans. W T

WHAT’S HOT RESTAURANTS
PRIMAL EATERY This new-ish, vibey space in New Church Street, CBD, revolves around the concept of a woodfire grill, with meat at the centre of its menu. The chefs make use of fire and innovative cooking techniques to create dishes that engage all the guests’ senses. On the menu is the butcher’s cut of the day, which is served with textures of onion and truffle mustard, or meat-lovers can choose from options like free-range duck with carrot variations and roasted kimchi; lamb shoulder with aubergine and lentils; pork belly with apple, kale, mustard and gorgonzola cream, and grilled fish with cauliflower and coconut puree, curried cauliflower and lemon atchar with cashew nuts. The tastefully decorated lounge & bar area is perfect for a pre-dinner drink, watching the mixologists at work. W T

SEABREEZE FISH & SHELL Also in Bree Street, this new seafood restaurant uses local, sustainable ingredients to create dishes that are creative and light. For starters, oysters are an obvious choice, with options from Knysna, Saldanha Bay and Luderitz at their oyster and MCC bar. There’s also a small plates selection, offering wild langoustines, seared tuna nicoise, and hake ceviche, that are great for sharing. If you feel like something more substantial, there are options like fish pie, and squid-ink pasta, while you can’t go wrong with a simple hake and chips. The interior is done in classic blues, wooden tables, and sea-themed details, while the outdoor seating is ideal for a warm day. Don’t miss the wine menu, which has been specially designed to pair well with seafood. W T

GO AMERICANA Closely resembling a slice of old Americana, the residence is evocative of the federal period architectural style around the 1800s. Balance and symmetry do the house justice with central porch doors opening out onto a functional patio supported by circular columns.
PICKET FENCING Further echoes of inspired architectural eminence are reflected in the large decorative window panes with neat white painted trims. Interestingly, bright white paint became available during the early 1830s in the United States and was extremely popular after the American Revolution in this style of housing. Traditional picket fencing, of course, surrounds the swimming pool and together with green lawns, brings the house to life.
GREAT OUTDOORS Oversized hurricane lamps and comfortably chunky furniture suggest easy outdoor living, pleasantly positioned and enough to appreciate breathtaking mountain views from suburbia. The outdoor furniture, upholstered in cool whites, with a touch of pale sky blue in the cushions, makes summer entertaining a breeze.

LUXURY OF SLEEP Bedrooms are generously proportioned opening out onto sunny patios that celebrate the vistas of green scenery. DĂŠcor is contemporary-modern with neutral tones that collaborate towards the interior as a whole. The effect is comforting, calming and accentuates the voluminous scale of the rooms. A combination of soft carpeting underfoot, block out drapes and LED lighting provides five-star hotel-style luxury for restful nights. Daytime celebrates natural bright, white light, and fresh air.
FORMAL SEATING True to its design era, the lounge claims its formal space with wood paneling on the walls and a large fireplace complete with a beveled mantelpiece and ornate dado railing. Two-tone tuxedo colours add elegance and contrast. A circular mirror anchors the room with its organic shape which is repeated in the modern rug. Fresh white sofas and brushed steel coffee and side tables give an edgy, ontrend feel to the room. The houndstooth cushions coupled with geometric prints and velveteen contribute to add detailed texture and warmth.
KICK BACK AND RELAX A living room in elephant grey envelopes loungers in a cocoon of refined earthiness with a touch of glamour. Again, the tuxedo theme plays out with white cigar chair sofas, a soft Persian rug, and a framed zebra striped crop shot. Dark contemporary shelving, lined with the colourful spines of a book collection, conceals a plethora of technological gadgets ready to entertain.
HOW TO ENTERTAIN Casual style is reinforced in this room with a few simple decorative additions: A retro tripod lamp, art deco chairs and an artwork that becomes the focal point in the room. Cream curtains, predominantly beige soft furnishings and minimal clutter offer respite for the eye and a platform for the painting to shine.

KITCHEN UPDATE The adjoining chef’s kitchen is a state of the art affair complete with glass splash-backs and futuristic stainless steel mixed with ice white cabinetry. Its sleek appearance is enhanced by reflective surfaces including silver barstools and a star-studded ceiling consisting of mini down-lighters.
COME DINE WITH ME Solid oak flooring is probably most evident in the open-plan dining area adding insulation, colour, and texture to the bright white and neutrally coloured interior. A modern romantic crystal chandelier suspended over the dining table provides a sense of place and coupled with elegant seating conveys a regal sense of pride. Two high backed chairs are evenly paired at odd ends of the table and give a sense of occasion. Perspex seats offset any airs and graces with their bistro style flavour and support the bold artwork which hangs on a gallery style wall. The use of red in the painting creates a magnificent focal point and is well chosen for such a neutral interior – a lovely mix of cool meets classic for the ultimate dinner party. SV

INSIDE OUT The house, designed by ARRCC interior design studio, is modular in appearance with a hint of postmodern Le Corbusier by design, but it is the striking impact of the surrounding natural Cape beauty that offsets the architecture. Direct views of the ocean are a focal point as one steps into the glass clad lobby. Volakas marble floors meet double volume picture windows and a decorative slatted screen, designed on the vertical, encourages the eye to seek out the horizontal strip of blue sea and sky beyond.
HELLO WORLD The living areas are cleverly offset and segmented by the functional slatted screen, which is boldly shaped with a gentle organic feel that adds movement to the large open space. Floods of natural light reflect across this installation adding a fun, contemporary feel to the design. A corner couch and rug in muted tones of hot chocolate ground the room, creating a harmonious balance between earth, water, and air. Oblong cushions in jewel tones suggest relaxed, friendly living.
DINERS STYLE The dining area opens onto the wooden patio and infinity pool and in keeping with the modular theme, works to the neat uniformity of a rectangle. A tenseater dining table with comfortable, informal chairs finds its space underneath a wooden and modern light fitting. A striking patterned artwork has been chosen for its detailed pattern and muted contrast.

YES CHEF! The kitchen, adjacent to the lounge and living space, conceals itself through its monochromatic and minimalist design. Parading as a moderate, decorative background and also a functional kitchen, it straddles the line between the two, operating accordingly.
COLLECTORS PIECES Nina Sierra Rubia, interior designer at ARRCC says that art was installed throughout the house to bring the client’s personality and emotion to the different spaces. Established and up-and-coming South African artists’ work was chosen on inspiration.
BEDROOM BLISS An authentic Peruvian Alpaca rug, wooden floors, oak panels, a bed throw, overstuffed cushions and comfortably upholstered furniture in thick slubbed, soft grey fabric all add warmth and special character to the master bedroom. Beautiful pinks and blues in the painting echo the sea views and the sweet arrangement of lounge furniture offers a living space that’s intimate and contained.
BATHTIME The en-suite bathroom in natural tones of marble, wood, and white offers a secluded exterior terrace with views stretching from Lion’s Head to Llandudno. The look is stark and utilitarian, with tinted mirrors installed for a touch of hedonistic glamour.

KIDS SPACES Fun is key in this vibrant children’s playroom decorated with lively wallpaper. Its relaxed seating is vast enough for a bunch of active children and is specially designed to drape, sit or even sleep across. Ambient lighting, a swanky, supersize TV screen and neatly concealed storage spaces provide a cosy, home-theatre style environment. There’s an activity corner too for creative endeavours and homework time!
PRETTY FUN A glass bridge links the master bedroom and the two children’s bedrooms. The children’s bedrooms are mirror versions of each other with a few different features that reflect playful innocence. Custom designed beds and bespoke wallpaper add a unique feeling to each space. An oversized Alice-in-Wonderland bell lamp creates a sense of fantasy and each element within the rooms tells its own story. Double doors invite the garden inside with the feeling of indoor-outdoor living, just right for creative play.
FOR VISITORS A private walkway leads to the self-contained guest suite. The suite features its own colour palette with dark wood furniture that complements its white surroundings. The bed is placed on a textured rug in olive green and mustard. An oversized artwork, by Cape Town artist Emalie Bingham, hangs above the bed and gives the room a playful feeling. Brass bedside lamps and enormous glass panels are creative and luxurious. SV

WITH STAYING POWER An early year preview for 2018 reveals the latest in kitchen trends. Here’s how you can use upcoming ideas when freshening up or redesigning your kitchen to add value with smart updates that will last. BY LAURA JONES

SCULPTED MINIMALISM The kitchen reinvents its look with industrialised cabinet drawers, without handles and with soft touch push technology in light, neutral panels. Shelves have clean lines and are, for the most part, concealed. Refrigeration becomes a muted showpiece with items stored behind thick glass so you can see what’s inside. This interesting design advancement uses a combination of materials uniformly throughout the kitchen, like burnished steel and unrefined wood grains in a wide variety of colours for texture and sophistication. However, two-toned or all-white cabinetry is still a winner and if you’re keeping external fittings, they’re the ultimate accessory, like jewellery. A big advantage of this clean, neat look is that you can add colourful details like upholstered kitchen furniture and a mosaic splash-back for extra character.

ECO IS IN Manufactured countertops in delicate swirls of quartz, reclaimed wood, tiles, and laminates are still very popular but an interesting newcomer to the scene is crushed glass. Recycled glass from bottles, windshields, and traffic-lights make an eco-friendly choice. Mixed with acrylic, the glass looks like it’s floating in a lake and when set in cement, it creates a shimmery mosaic effect. Another option is to go local and look for ‘green’ kitchen countertops with sustainable features like low-toxicity binders and ecofriendly manufacturing processes.
PHOTOGRAPH: DOUGLAS JONES
IRIDESCENT ACCENTS Think of a cameo of lights reflected in the rainbow hues of soap bubbles, on butterfly wings, the inside of sea shells and the gleam of certain precious minerals and gemstones. Inspired by the burgeoning rise of technology you can expect that we’ll be seeing a lot more of this futuristic feature in kitchen tiles and it will, unavoidably, show up in kitchen surfaces, metal fittings, and cabinetry.
SIMON SAYS ‘PANTONE’! No matter what’s trending, colour doesn’t have to be a permanent fixture in a kitchen. Use 2018’s Pantone trends for your own inspiration and introduce eye-catching dabs into soft furnishings, kitchen appliances and interesting art and bowls. This way your colours are non-committal and you can swap items out when you want a change. That said, you’re likely, as a consumer, to notice that colours will become more intense and less camera shy with an array of midnight blues, deep greens, purples, turquoise and pinks doing the rounds.
APPLIANCES The future of technological integration includes wiring and pathways for docking stations and internet connected appliances. But it goes further with technology integrated into functions like taps, lighting, and refrigeration for the most functional use of energy all operated by a smartphone or tablet. Induction cookers and convection ovens are popular, with built in microwave ovens

becoming more prevalent. Appliances are smaller and more convenient with a throwback to mid-century 1950s design. Lookout for interesting colours in crockery and appliances in beautiful new shades of purplish blue.
AMBIENT LIGHT Under-cabinet LED lighting is all the rage, with simple, concealed strips of light in different colours creating beautiful effects and highlighting design features and workspaces. Taller ceilings and darker colour combinations need more light whereas lighter or white surfaces absorb less light, so consider your space carefully. SV

odern chefs are increasingly looking at the past for inspiration, and some of the most exciting menus are incorporating practices like pickling, fermenting and dehydrating. With a growing interest in sustainability, heritage and artisanal craftsmanship, the time is right for the industry’s key players to get creative with this shift in perspective.
WHY THE INTEREST? Mpho Tshukudu, registered dietician and co-author of EAT.TING, a collection of traditional South African recipes encouraging us to ‘cook like our grannies’, says that people are searching for lasting solutions to health and wellbeing, and have for a long time looked overseas and at other cultures for answers. Now, more people are realising that using already available foods is a sustainable way to eat healthy. “There is also a trend to look at the past for solutions of the future. This is also seen in the sustainability sector, going green and organic farming. We are embracing natural hair, skin, music and arts and it is only logical that food forms part of this ‘new’ proud identity,” she explains. Mpho was inspired to create the book when her patients alerted her to a gap in the market. “Diet foods are not appealing or

culturally relevant,” she says. She started to write the book for her patients, but, she says, it increasingly became a journey of self-discovery. “It is a tribute to the enormous body of ancient wisdom that can be used in our modern lives, and is also a tribute to my mother and grandmother and their mothers before them.” Hannerie Visser of Studio H, a multidisciplinary design studio in Cape Town’s Bree Street, echoes this idea. She believes that, along with a growing obsession with ethical food practices and sustainable living, there is also a rising desire amongst consumers for handcrafted goods and designs, particularly those that pay homage Studio H ©Niquita Bento to the craftsman and Salon 58 and artisans.

WHERE CAN WE SEE THE TREND? Hannerie has embraced the trend by ensuring that all her studio’s food events and conferences explore how food is an intrinsic part of our cultural history and identity. “We invite international and local experts to contribute to the conversation around identity, sustainability and ethical food practices,” she says. Last year, at the Spier Secret Festival, Hannerie and her team invited Dutch conceptual catering collective Cateringa & Kompanen to create an interactive installation called Alga’s Bar. Visitors were shown the lifecycle of algae, and a fish tank with algae lit up the whole room as a representation of a beacon for future foods. “Alga’s Bar is a short circuit of the food chain as a homage to the humble beginning of it. Laying down under our specimen-table whilst listening to an essay on aquatic life, a breathing exercise or the sound of a bubbling cooperation, visitors donate their time and breath to the algae above them. Human breath contains heat and carbon dioxide, valuable resources for young algae. In return, the algae nourish the visitors in the shape of a fresh algae shot, smoothie or cocktail when donations have reached a satisfactory level,” explains Hannerie.
Ash Heeger from ASH restaurant, who uses the ancient method of cooking on fire; and Giles Edwards from La Tête, who has embraced full-on nose to tail cooking, serving up a daily menu of delicacies like devilled chicken hearts, venison pie and trotters. For Mpho, it’s about incorporating timeless African flavours into daily cooking. She suggests using your grandmother’s recipes as a base and adding flavour to them as you go, or alternatively adapting your favourite recipes by using African ingredients. For example, she says, make pesto with morogo, or create your own nut butters with ground bambara, pecan, cashew and macadamia nuts. Try whole grain millet or sorghum for pilaf and risotto. Nuts, seeds, lentils and beans also make great meat-free dishes.
THE BENEFITS OF ANCIENT EATING From ancient grains to dishes prepared by fermenting and pickling, these foods are not only packed with flavour, but are good for your health too.
Kimchi A traditional Korean side dish made with fermented and salted vegetables (most commonly cabbage and radish), garlic, chilli and spices, kimchi is rich in vitamins. Because of the fermentation process used to make it, it’s also rich in gut-boosting lactobacilli bacteria.
HOW CAN WE EXPERIENCE IT? Some other great examples of how the trend is being explored creatively, says Hannerie, are Chef
Kombucha Kombucha is a fermented tea that has gained popularity for its digestive health benefits. It’s used as a functional probiotic, and is often taken for its ability to increase energy and improve digestion.
Morogo
Kimchi
Morogo is a leafy green that has been foraged in South Africa for generations. It’s packed with micro-nutrients like iron, calcium, vitamins A and C and omega 3s, and some even produce seeds which can be considered a complete protein.
Teff grain Originating from Ethiopia, Teff was one of the earliest crops cultivated for food. These tiny grains have a mild, nutty flavour and slightly crunchy texture once cooked. It’s naturally gluten-free and high in fibre, as well as a great source of iron and magnesium.
Sorghum
Sorghum
Sorghum is native to Africa and, because of its versatility, is ideal for people with wheat allergies and as an alternative to other cereals and grains. It’s high in fibre and protein, and helps to improve digestive health. SV

FOR THOUGHT Wine expert, Emile Joubert, shares his top three wines to add to your collection.

ape Town might be synonymous with the growing of wine grapes and drinking of the fermented juice since 1659, but the city had to wait until this year to get its own demarcated wine district. In May the South African wine authorities accepted a proposal from the wine areas of Constantia and Durbanville, both a one-winged seagull’s fly from the City Centre, to establish a Wine of Origin Cape Town district. This means that the wine folk of Constantia and Durbanville will be able to officially use the name of the Mother City on their wine bottles. For us locals, this might not seem like such a big deal. But for those less aware of Cape Town’s wine culture, and foreigners who need a stronger link to the South African wine industry, what better brand to associate with one’s wine than a leading travel destination and instantly recognisable place name? The first pick for this issue, thus, is one of the brilliant Sauvignon Blanc wines made by Thys Louw on his Diemersdal Wine Estate in Durbanville. The Diemersdal Eight Rows Sauvignon Blanc 2017 arrived proudly bearing the Wine of Origin Cape Town on the front label, one of the earlier producers in the newly demarcated district to make hay and display its link to the most well-known city in Africa. Different label, yes, but the quality of Diemersdal’s Sauvignon Blanc remains on song and is, quite frankly, better than ever. The Eight Rows is made from
a single vineyard block of Sauvignon Blanc growing on Diemersdal, an address ideally situated for this cultivar. The Atlantic is a few kilometres off bringing in the cool draughts Sauvignon Blanc requires. Dryland farming sans irrigation on granite soils and Louw’s skill with the variety makes Diemersdal Sauvignon Blanc a reliable choice for lovers of this grape. Oozing Sauvignon Blanc, the Eight Rows is a somewhat sterner interpretation of a variety that has become South Africa’s best-selling wine. After harvest, the juice is left on the lees for five months. Along with regular stirring, this adds depth and complexity, something I prefer my Sauvignon Blanc’s to have. The wine shows a strong core of minerality, from the flinty elegance on the nose and the bright expression on the palate. A rounded mouth-feel exudes nectarine and kiwi-fruit, balanced with fresh acidity on the finish. I first tried this wine in the grip of an icy Cape Winter and can’t wait to experience the delights it offers this Spring. Working my way up on the colour spectrum – and talking of Spring – rosé is one of those wines that I order or buy in moments of habitual indecisiveness. It hardly ever fails to please, especially since South

African winemakers realised the potential of the drier styles. Kanonkop Wine Estate in Stellenbosch might make some of South Africa’s greatest red wines, but in the Kanonkop Kadette Pinotage Rosé , this magnificent farm shows a breezy, charming side to its wine offering. Of course, Pinotage was going to be the grape of choice when the decision to produce a rosé was made as the history of Kanonkop is closely linked to South Africa’s home-grown red variety being one of its pioneering growers. For the Kadette Pinotage Rosé the grapes are given two hours skincontact during the pressing, just enough to impart some palate-grip and red-berry to the juice, along with a beguiling colour somewhere between onion skin and salmon - depending which number of bottles you are on. Because if there is one style of wine made to keep the pouring and glass-holding arm active, it is a fine rosé. Served well-chilled, the wine is bone-dry and bracing on the palate offering the kind of revitalising refreshment to remind you that of all the drinks out there, wine is the one that affirms life and all its pleasures. The splash of zestiness is complemented by delicate floral and raspberry notes – never sweet – and the thick-skinned, small berry Pinotage grape ensures the wine maintains a presence in the mouth due to the lick of tannin. It is a brilliant food wine, especially with grilled fish and cream-based pasta dishes.
Spring might be in the air, but the taste of a brilliant red wine I had in the depth of winter still lingers. Black Elephant Vintners, out Franschhoek way, made this mark with a wine from a red variety I do not usually associate with South African greatness, and that is Syrah. The Black Elephant Amistad Syrah 2014 is made from grapes exclusively grown in Franschhoek by Jacques Wentzel, a skilled winemaker and one of those guys whose wines I would trust were he to make Pinot Noir from the Kalahari Desert. The Amistad Syrah is a beautiful, graceful interpretation of the grape that is synonymous with the Rhône region of France. The grapes are sourced from different vineyards in the Franschhoek valley, allowing Jacques to shade the canvas from a broad palette. Maturation in a diverse combination of oak – large and smaller barrels, some older, a touch new – gives the wine an assertive muscularity and presence without the self-combusting fruit bombs Syrah can drop on you. It is a lighter style of Syrah, allowing a clean, pure line of red and black fruit to assert itself, backed by a sturdy savouriness. There is a bit of spice that adds an exotic touch to the classical complexity, and the lingering aftertaste bears the polish and finesse of a classy wine from a skilled winemaker. At three years of age, Amistad Syrah 2014 is offering immense drinking pleasure. But put it away, and you’ll be sitting on a classic in a few years’ time. This wine – and the producer – is worth keeping an eye on. SV

Five spectacular ways to experience the Cape Winelands like never before! BY THEA BECKMAN
I
f there’s one thing Capetonians know how to do, and do well, it’s wine tasting and with well over 550 wineries in the Cape, we’re not short of options. Yet, our bountiful winelands have more to offer than sheer variety alone so if you’re in the mood for something special and a little more unusual than the standard wine tasting and lunch, here are five thrilling and memorable activities the Cape winelands have to offer.
1.
TUK-TUK WINE TOUR OF STELLENBOSCH
Tuk-Tuk Stellies is a local tour company that offers daily chauffeured trips on three-wheeled tuk-tuk vehicles into Stellenbosch’s notoriously fruitful and spectacular winelands. This glorified golf cart nimbly zips from wine farm to wine farm and, having no windows or doors, eliminates all sensory barriers between the passengers and the fragrant vineyards. Tuk-Tuk Stellies offers both a half and a full-day tour. The halfday tours begin at 10am or 2pm and include wine tastings at Lanzerac, Morgenhof, and Simonsig wine estates. The full-day tour departs at 10am and entails a full indulgent day of wine tastings at Waterford (wine and chocolate pairing), Lanzerac, Neil Ellis (lunch), Morgenhof, and Simonsig. BLEND YOUR OWN WINE IN ROBERTSON WINE VALLEY
Located in the Robertson Wine Valley, Excelsior wine estate offers visitors a truly unique experience: the opportunity to create your own wine blend. With a selection of fabulous wines to choose from, you can create a final product that is uniquely yours and caters beautifully to your palate. Craft a dramatic blend with Excelsior’s Paddock shiraz and cabernet sauvignon, or a powerfully elegant white with their chardonnay and viognier. Alternatively, you can go all out and throw together their entire range of reds or whites. Either way, the final product is uniquely yours and it will be bottled, corked, and finalized with a personalised label for you to take home as the perfect souvenir. CYCLE TOURS OF THE CONSTANTIA WINE VALLEY
Stellenbosch may be the Cape’s best-known wine route, but the Constantia valley is the oldest, being the very place Dutch governor, Simon van der Stel, planted the first vines that conceived South Africa’s entire wine industry. So, leave the car in the parking lot and climb on a bicycle for an intimate exploration of this verdant, historic valley with its centuries old Cape Dutch architecture and vineyards that cling to the slopes of the Constantiaberg. AWOL Tours, a Cape Town-based company, runs leisurely half-day cycling tours that guide guests from wine estate to wine estate. Here, you can enjoy the spectacular scenery, learn about the history, and sample some of the Cape’s oldest wines at award-winning wineries that include Groot Constantia Estate, Buitenverwachting, Uitsig, and Steenberg. TAKE-OFF FROM PAARL IN A HOT-AIR BALLOON
An exquisite blend of thrill and romance, hot-air ballooning offers an unparalleled view of the Cape winelands’ patchwork quilt of vineyards, farmlands, and manicured gardens, all framed by the rugged grandeur of the Hottentots Holland Mountains. The tours, operated by African Travel Gateway, take off from a launch site near Paarl’s Grande Roche Hotel and include a hot breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant afterwards. With the Cape being infamous for its blustery weather, balloon trips only run from 20th November and 3rd May each year and are confirmed on the morning of scheduled departure. Tour operators recommend March as the best month, but with only one flight per day (and four people per flight) it’s highly recommended that you book well in advance. HOP-ON, HOP-OFF FRANSCHHOEK WINE TRAM
The Franschhoek Valley is packed with some of the Cape’s best known and loved wineries and with so much to do and see in the region, the very best way to explore it all is by a hop-on, hop-off experience...in a tram! The Franschhoek Wine Tram operates four lines or routes within the valley, making a stop each hour at a different wine farm, so you can choose the itinerary that best suits your fancy. In addition to enjoying a leisurely open-air ride to your wine tastings, the trams afford passengers panoramic views of the stunning Franschhoek valley accompanied by a narration on the history of the region and its traditions of wine cultivation. To Book: T 021 300 0338 or 021 876 4943 E info@winetram.co.za W www.winetram.co.za No one ever needed an excuse to enjoy wine, but now, with these five exhilarating ways to get to and around the Cape winelands, you can turn an already pleasurable day of wine tasting into a truly extravagant treat! Chicory Cheese Cafe

Darling Brew
was lucky enough to visit Darling for the first time a few years ago in early Spring, when wild flowers carpeted the land on the side of the road, and there is truly something magical about the way that the landscape bursts into colour at this time of year. While the flowers remain my favourite sight, I have discovered something new on each subsequent trip. The best way to soak up the charm of the little town and its surrounds is to take it slow - have tea at quirky cafes, enjoy lazy afternoons tasting local beer and wine, and savour some of the region’s best cuisine.
EAT AND DRINK For a small town, Darling is home to a fair number of restaurants. A personal favourite of mine is The Marmalade Cat, a sweet space best suited to coffee and carrot cake or a tasty breakfast of pancakes with scrambled eggs and cream cheese, enjoyed in the quirky courtyard. Another cosy option is Chicory Cheese Cafe. Located on the main road, it’s a charming space that serves casual breakfasts and lunches, and the menu includes some surprising sweet treats, like chocolate and beetroot cake, fudgy peanut smoothies and Mexican chocolate waffles with ice cream, fresh strawberries and a dash of cinnamon. Hilda’s Kitchen at Groote Post is open for lunch, and although the menu changes daily, each dish is made with locally-grown and sourced produce. Expect country cooking, with a bit of a modern twist,
with options like blue cheese and caramelised onion tart; slow roasted pork belly with plum sauce and noodles; and buttermilk tart with coconut ice cream. The craft beer industry has exploded in recent years, and we’re spoilt for choice these days in Cape Town, but Darling Brew was one of the region’s pioneers. Established in 2010, the brewery has grown significantly and now boasts a beautiful taproom just on the outskirts of the town. They offer an interactive beer tasting experience overlooking the working microbrewery, and have a range of light meals and cheese and meat platters on offer, all of which are made with local, seasonal ingredients.

Darling and the surrounding area is perfect for those who love nature and the outdoors, as there are a number of easily accessible walking and mountain bike trails around.
If wine tasting is more your style, the Darling Wine Route is well worth a visit. While it’s smaller than some of the other routes around Cape Town, it’s equally scenic and includes some much-loved names, like Cloof, Groote Post, Darling Cellars, Ormonde, and Tukulu. To stock up on all your favourites, pop into The Darling Wine Shop, which offers mixed cases with selections from local producers, as well as ‘wine of the day’ tastings.
EXPLORE Perhaps Darling’s most famous drawcard, Evita se Perron is a cabaret theatre and restaurant created by actor and comedian Pieter-Dirk Uys, and makes a fun evening out. The atmosphere is relaxed, and PieterDirk Uys performs his highly acclaimed shows on the weekends, while the restaurant serves traditional South African cooking and features recipes from the Evita’s Kossie Sikelela cookbook. For those interested in history, the Darling Museum is worth a stop. It was founded in 1978 by the Darling Women’s Agricultural Association originally as a Butter Museum. Today, a section of it still contains a collection of artefacts from the early days of Darling’s butter-making industry, and has grown to include Victorian clothing, furniture and homeware. There is also an agricultural hall that shows the history of farming in the area.

ith its striking coastline, many travellers are drawn to Greece for the unspoiled beaches and crystal waters. And while the many islands that make up the Greek Archipelago certainly make the perfect setting for a fun escape; the palpable history and distinct architecture of the country add a unique element. Embrace the casual culture, add some local food, and a sip or two of ouzo, and you’re set for a relaxed stay in a picture-perfect setting.
SEE THE SIGHTS No trip to Greece would be complete without exploring some of the country’s rich ancient past. And, in fact, many of the most interesting archaeological sites exist on the mainland, so be sure to explore some of them before you go island-hopping. Ancient Olympia in Olympia Town gives a hint of the place’s former glory
and the ruins are a fascinating glimpse of a thousand years of Olympic Games history. Possibly one of the most important sites in Western history, the Acropolis, with the Parthenon rising from it, is visible from anywhere in Athens, and the white marble structure is a monumental sight any time of day. Restorations are ongoing and many of the original sculptures have been moved to the Acropolis Museum, which is also host to a number of exhibitions and educational presentations. On the island of Crete is the famous Palace of Knossos, a collection of ruins that show an immense palace, courtyards, private apartments, and baths. The site was first excavated in 1878 by a local archaeologist and work continued into the 1930s, when parts were controversially restored. Today, you can spend time wandering around the space and see some of the ancient artworks and restored rooms.

SOAK UP THE SUN Greece boasts some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, and if you’re after sun and sand, you won’t struggle to find a suitable spot, especially if you explore the islands off the mainland. One of the most photographed beaches in the country is Navagio in the northwest of Zakynthos island, which is accessible only by boat and whose setting is characterised by turquoise water and dramatic white limestone cliffs. Loved for its white-washed buildings, spectacular sunsets, and volcanic-sand beaches, Santorini is also home to vineyards and traditional villages, making
it a charming base from which to explore. Mykonos is known globally for its clear waters and striking architecture, while the island of Crete remains a firm favourite for visitors. It’s the largest and most populous of all the Greek islands and is a great place to get a taste of the area’s ancient history as well as its natural beauty. The island has four main regions: Chania, Réthymno, Heraklion, and Lassíthi, all of which offer picturesque scenery, architectural and historical sites and pretty villages to explore. Greece comprises 6 000 islands and islets, which are scattered in the Aegean and Ionian Seas, and the Greek Archipelago makes up 7 500 kilometres of the country’s 16 000 kilometre coastline, so if you want to find something a little lesser known, it’s possible with a little exploration.

Hytra Gyros wrapped in a pita bread
Varoulko Seaside at the Mikrolimano marina
TAKE A BITE Greek food is well-known the world over, and for good reason. Perhaps one of the most loved is the kebab, also known as gyros or souvlaki, which is spit-roasted meat placed into pitas with all the trimmings, or served on a stick, and makes great on-the-go street food. Other impossible-to-resist snacks include saganaki (deep fried cheese), sfougata (fried cheese balls), revithokeftedes (fried chickpea balls), and dolmathakia (grape leaves stuffed with rice, pine nuts, and fresh herbs). If you’re on the lookout for an authentic, but elegant Greek dining experience, Athens is a good place to start. The city has numerous upmarket options, many of which offer traditional cuisine with a modern twist. Varoulko Seaside at the Mikrolimano marina is headed by Michelin-awarded chef Lefteris Lazarou, and serves fresh seafood prepared in the
local style - think lightly cured fish in olive oil with sweet onion and chives, marinated anchovies with zucchini, tomato concassé and parsley, and desalted dry cod, served with a traditional garlic dip known as skordalia. Another of the city’s culinary gems is Hytra, also Michelinawarded, and a space that is rethinking traditional Greek recipes in a contemporary way. Guests can enjoy classic favourites with a dash of the unexpected. A typical tasting menu includes options like spanakorizo with spinach cream, dill, and lemon; cured bonito with ginger, red chilli pepper, and shiso vinegar, and honey-infused yoghurt with chamomile, walnuts and bee pollen. If you’re on the lookout for a tipple, try some local favourites, like retsina, a white wine flavoured with the resin of pine trees; ouzo, an aniseed flavoured liqueur; or tsipouro, a liquor similar in taste to grappa. he very best way to gain perspective is to fly. A few hundred metres up in the air, with a view of the Hottentots Holland Mountains to the east, the sweeping arm of the peninsula to the south, and the undulating surface of the Atlantic Ocean beneath you, the world’s problems can seem blissfully far away. In that moment – drifting on the thermals, gravity fighting in vain against your glider’s sails, the magnificence of the Cape stretching before you – the ultimate perspective is yours. Let’s go paragliding!
CAPE TOWN’S HOT SPOTS FOR PARAGLIDING Being a topographically voluptuous region, the Cape Peninsula is peppered with paragliding spots. Lion’s Head and Signal Hill are home to the city’s best known and most popular and accessible paragliding launch sites that offer breath-taking views of the Cape’s rugged and dramatic landscape. Being an inherently windy region, you can expect a thrilling 20 to 30-minute journey down to your landing site, which, in this case, is typically on a field next to the Bungalow restaurant and bar in Clifton. Other launch sites include the picturesque Franschhoek, Porterville in the Olifants River Mountains (155 kilometres

northeast of Cape Town), the whale-watching town of Hermanus, the hair-raising Sir Lowry’s Pass in the Hottentots Holland Mountains, and Table Mountain, which is better left to the experienced paragliders owing to the launch site being located on a treacherous cliff face.
PARAGLIDING 101: GETTING STARTED Paragliding is an exhilarating experience, not only for the view but also for the adrenalinspiking fact that you’re flying. But, while it may be classed as an extreme sport, you don’t have to be an incorrigible thrillseeker or have a special license to tick it off your bucket list. With several professional paragliding
companies offering daily launches from a selection of beautiful sites around the Mother City and her surrounds, anyone can take a flying leap off a cliff and into the azure skies beyond! Getting started requires no more than a phone call or an email enquiry to a local paragliding company, such as Fly Cape Town Paragliding or Cape Town Tandem Paragliding. Taking weather conditions into account, a day and time will be arranged and then all you really need to do is show up in warm clothes, closed shoes, and skin smeared with sunscreen. Beginner paragliders will fly tandem with an experienced and qualified pilot; however, if you want to fly solo, you’ll first need to acquire a basic license from the
South African Hang gliding and Paragliding Association (SAHPA). Just like driving a car, you’ll need to earn this license through formal training, which is done under the watchful tutelage of a certified paragliding instructor. Once you have mastered the theory and practice of safe flying, taking off, and landing, and have fulfilled the required number of practice hours, you’ll take your SAHPA exams. If you pass – when you pass - the sky becomes the limit and the troposphere, your playground.
THE ULTIMATE ESCAPE Whether you’re jonesing for a shot of adrenalin or just want to put a few hundred metres between yourself and the stresses that come hand-in-hand with life on terra firma, paragliding offers an incredible, once-in-alifetime experience (or more if you become hooked, as you probably will.) With a plethora of options that attract scores of locals and tourists alike, Cape Town is one of the greatest destinations in the country for this invigorating sport. RE-DISCOVERED When Land Rover launched the new Discovery Sport at the end of 2016, we really didn’t think it could get much better than that. UPGRADE TO PREMIUM CLASS The new Discovery is redefined in such a way that it still manages to capture the hearts of the adventure seeker as it always has, and now it’s love at first sight with a design that can turn any head. Stepping inside is pure magic. The space and comfort of each of the seven seats will feel like you’ve been upgraded to golden circle tickets. Wherever the eye lands you are greeted with luxurious leather stitched trimmings, screaming pure opulence.
DISCO TECHNO BEATS With up to 9 USB ports, 6 12-volt charging points, and an integrated 3G wi-fi hotspot you will be connected no matter where the road takes you. The brains powering these impressive features are also worth a mention. The connectivity behind the InControl Touch Pro is leaps and bounds ahead of the pack, with a 10-inch hi-res touchscreen that not only holds the standard features you would expect but now features some great apps to compliment
your lifestyle including Spotify, AccuWeather, EventSeeker, and more.
LARGE AND IN CHARGE As refined as the Discovery is, it is made to take on the road less travelled. The air suspension can either lower the car by 60mm when needed, and give you an extra clearance of 75mm to entice you to discover more. Pair the adjustability of the suspension with the Four Wheel Drive and you’ll be set for any tricky off-road situation.
TOUCH, PAUSE, ENGAGE To back up the ‘pretty’ you’ll need amazing horse power. There are currently 2 models in the range. The 3.0l Td6 diesel automatic and the 3.0l Si6 petrol automatic. Both come with an 8-speed transmission gearbox. The diesel model kicks out 190kW, and the petrol model an impressive 250kW. The starting price on the new Discovery is R980 000.00, well worth the investment. SV

WAGON DITCHED
The iconic Volvo station wagon has always been more ‘station wagon’ than ‘intrepid explorer’. The stigma attached to Volvo when it comes to estates/station wagons has been shattered with the all-new V90 Cross Country. With a lot more SUV than wagon, you will have an absolute blast on and off the road. BY VANN VAN STADEN
FACE OFF
AUTO PILOT
Greeted with a marvellous face that carries incredible presence, the headlights feature the impressive ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED design, that’s not just appealing to the eye, but also forward thinking as it comes with Active Bending and Active High Beam features to keep you safe on the road. The V90 Cross Country comes standard with 19-inch alloy wheels. The ground clearance is a formidable 210mm. Inside you will find the signature Volvo Swedish luxury trimmings. Nappa soft leather upholstery all round, dual automatic climate control, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, to mention a few.
Cars driving themselves are a not-too far cry from reality. Volvo is pushing boundaries and saw this as an opportunity to challenge themselves and have included Pilot Assist. It’s not quite auto pilot but it is a semi-autonomous driving assistant. You won’t handover complete control, the Pilot Assist can, however, help you with controlling your speed, braking, and steering. This can only be done at a cruising speed below 130km/h. You would need to be on a road with clear road markings on either side of the car for it to kick in and work.
CROSSING THE COUNTRY The V90 Cross Country has a name that wants you to hit the closest dirt road and go wild. Exploring little towns with very little infrastructure is no longer a logistical nightmare, but rather an adventure waiting to happen. All Wheel Drive plays in your favour here.
