HELLO EDITOR’S NOTE
E
very story has an end but in life every end has a new beginning, so as we bid farewell to summer we graciously welcome autumn into our homes, and we are privileged to do the same with our launch edition of Southern Vines.
OUR VISION FOR SOUTHERN VINES Most of our team reside within the southern suburbs, and have been in the area for years and years, some from birth. And as much as we’re all extremely patriotic to our country, we all feel the same towards the southern suburbs of Cape Town. ‘We’ have a community feel like no other, a ‘togetherness’ found rarely elsewhere, and an unsaid understanding and appreciation for the mountains, forests, vineyards, the opulent living heritage, and all that surrounds us. So why not create a magazine that speaks directly to all of us, that includes area specific news, yet also includes motivational pieces to inspire positivity in our lives, as well as a bit of news and events from the outer areas pushing us to explore the rest our beautiful town and country have to offer. Our mix of contemporary property and design features, our trending ‘what’s hot’ pages as well as the business, wellness, sport, wine and food pages, there’s a piece that will speak to everyone in the home. We like to think of Southern Vines as a ‘mouthpiece for the southern suburbs’ and so we urge you to get in contact with us if you have any news that you think might be relevant to our community. Contact us at lauren@southernvines.co.za

Tucked into a little over an acre of mountainside greenery, this Bishopscourt residence is sensitively positioned with north facing views that clearly celebrate its close proximity to the dramatic slopes of Kirstenbosch Gardens. BISHOPSCOURT PROPERTY
A MODERN APPROACH The driveway has a first and lasting impression that fuses historical references, some classical and others modern. The moderately pitched roof with mottled grey tiling and manor house windows makes this feel like a British country house, but the streamlined proportions and stone clad exterior suggest something ultimately quite modern. Experience the magical grandeur of established trees and indigenous plants. This home is situated in one of the most diverse natural biomes in the world, the opulent southern suburbs of Cape Town.

PROPERTY BISHOPSCOURT 5 bedrooms (5 en suite) / 5 bathrooms / 4 reception rooms / 2 garages
ELEGANT CAPE GRACE What’s notably impressive is the property’s gentle connection to the natural landscape emphasised by strong, simple angles that blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. Generous spaces are characterised by oversized entrances and the ceiling to floor glass panes capture sweeping views of the valley. The architectural treatment of doorways and the effortless way the interior spaces connect creates a free flow of space.
A WALK IN THE PARK The strong architectural lines and any further distinctions between the landscape and the house are
softened by a shimmering multi-level Olympic size infinity pool. This vast body of water is cleverly broken by the length of the hallway, as it transforms into a boardwalk out over the water and into the gardens.
LIQUID LOUNGES The endless blue pool surrounds an array of reception and entertainment areas with decks and balconies leading into the garden. The layout of lounge areas meets the different needs of the entire family especially those seeking the comfort and privacy of their own space. Large white vaulted ceilings maximise the living and entertainment areas reflecting floods of natural light. Travertine textured stone on the feature walls mimics the cool reclusive feel of the mountains, with neat and easy built in gas fireplaces. Each is carefully situated throughout the home along with simple woodpile storage for easy access on cosy winter evenings.
EATING OUT, OUTSIDE The dining areas are a reminder of sophisticated entertaining undercover but outdoors. Enjoy al fresco pool parties next to the pool pavilion, ideal for lazy days in the sun or late afternoons. The house can easily host many different gatherings at one time through its clever use of space.

INVESTMENTS BUSINESS
M
ost people do not stray too far from the beaten path when building their investment portfolios, often plumping for fixed-term, fixed-interest investment options, stock shares, or immovable assets such as land and property. However, another intriguing option for would-be investors comes in the form of movable assets. These include (but are not limited to) tangible objects that are purchased not only for their lifestyle benefits, but also in the expectation that their value will appreciate over time, and thereby prove a sound investment strategy. This article will first introduce readers to the concept of using movable assets as a means to diversify one’s investment portfolio, before providing a run-through of some examples of movable assets with particularly good investment potential. It will conclude with some insights about the risks involved in investing in movable assets and suggest some ways that these risks can be minimised.
value. Movable assets are also a viable means of externalising currency. The price and availability of movable assets is also highly dependent on broader market conditions and economic and cultural circumstances, which means buying and selling at just the right moment can yield phenomenal returns. Increasingly, investors and small businesses are using movable assets as security when raising capital through bank loans. And finally, in economic climates where uncertainty reigns about currency devaluation and/or stagnant interest rates, some investors see movable assets as a practical way of diversifying their investment portfolios. Of course, though, none of these factors address the most immediate and tangible benefit of movable assets: the fact that they are also “lifestyle choices”, that provide use and enjoyment to owners, and contribute on a day-to-day basis to a sense of living well within the home.
MOVABLE ASSETS IN A NUTSHELL
So, notwithstanding a general economic slump, let’s say you find yourself in the fortunate position of being able to raise some capital for investment… What should you buy? Which particular movable assets tend to attract investors?
The term ‘movable assets’ is best understood quite literally: these are either assets that can be moved or transported easily (think artworks, jewellery, antique furniture), or assets that are themselves modes of transportation (yachts, vintage sports cars, private jets). Especially in times when the property market is hostile to investment (perhaps due to high taxation or over-supply), investors find movable assets attractive for a number of reasons. The right items (more on this later) can provide hard currency returns, which means returns that are not likely to depreciate suddenly or fluctuate wildly in
WHAT TO BUY
YACHTS & LUXURY BOATS Historically, yachts and luxury boats have been popular choices for South African investors looking for (relatively) low-risk, asset-based investments. There are a number of highly practical reasons for this trend. Firstly, yachts and boats are priced in US Dollars — a stable performer on the global currency market. This means that, should the Rand continue to devalue against the Dollar in the future, any hard return on a yacht or boat sold in US$ will offer even greater yields to your Rand-based portfolio. Yachts and boats also offer a way to externalise your wealth. You can sail them to another part of the world and sell them there, and you have — quite literally — moved your assets out of the country in a way that circumvents stringent exchange controls. (This was more of an issue during the old regime, hence the surge in investment in yachts by South Africans in the 1970s and 80s.) Of course, though, the

BUSINESS INVESTMENTS
most obvious reason for owning a yacht is using it to chart your own sea adventures! This is a movable asset that can provide enormous lifestyle benefits, over and above its sheer investment potential. According to Daniel Snyman, regional sales manager of global yacht charter company The Moorings (quoted by Finance24 in May 2015), companies such as his can offer buyers yacht ownership programs that yield a 9% per annum guaranteed income for five years, plus usage. As yachts and luxury boats do entail a significant outlay of capital, buyers should — of course — proceed with caution. Be sure to do extensive market research, and to buy a boat made by a reputable manufacturer that shines in its particular class: this will help offset some risk in terms of being able to sell the yacht on at a later point. Also advisable is to enter a purchase agreement where some of the heavy ‘invisible’ costs — insurance, mooring, upkeep — are alleviated in some way (perhaps a partownership deal).
“To varying degrees, gold, silver and platinum are interesting asset-based investment choices.” ARTWORKS A favourite choice for sophisticated investors, artworks can be extremely volatile performers, with a move for the right piece at the right time allowing for astronomical gains. A large William Kentridge sketch bought in the 1980s for R3,500 could fetch nearly a million Rand at auction today — not to mention the aesthetic pleasure derived from having it hang proudly in your home for 30 years. Georgia Eccles Schoeman, owner of Art in the Yard, stresses the importance of “enjoying the work” that you buy. She points out that foreign interest can cause spikes in the price of local artists’ work, and that this can have an ambivalent effect on the local market, making it difficult to predict. Her advice is to collect work from artists who actively market and promote their own work, with “regular shows in reputable galleries”, and who seek to keep their work fresh and interesting (and so avoid becoming “stale”). Those looking to add artwork to their investment portfolios should remember that the key to these investments is timing: buying and selling at just the right time. If you are able to buy an item of enduring
quality for a competitive price (perhaps at a time when people are looking to offload assets), and then sell when things enter a boom period again and there is simply more capital moving through the markets — you will, in all likelihood, achieve large profits. (Remember, however, that the converse also applies, and that should you ever be forced to sell your artwork in a hurry, you may be forced to accept an underwhelming price for it.)
PRECIOUS METALS To varying degrees, gold, silver and platinum are interesting asset-based investment choices. By purchasing physical quantities of these solidly performing precious metals, investors are able to physically ‘hold onto’ and maintain their assets, while being assured of steady (if not always spectacular) investment growth. Investors often find that balancing a futures-heavy portfolio with hard assets such as precious metals is reassuring, and their high value-to-weight ratio means that the costs involved in storing and securing your gold, silver or platinum investments will not be exorbitant. Each metal has its own set of market strengths and weaknesses. The gold price has risen starkly since the year 2000, and it has additional appeal as an investment because it is so easy to monitor: the price of the gold in your hand will move in step with spot gold pricing. Silver and platinum, meanwhile, are much more volatile investment options, as these metals also have extensive industrial application. Silver is also often considered a relatively secure hedge against inflation, while platinum — because its production is almost exclusively undertaken in developing nations — is more prone to price spikes, making it desirable for investors looking for longterm investment projects.

COLLECTABLES Often the domain of hobbyists and weekend enthusiasts, there is nevertheless money to be made in the trading of collectibles of all kinds. A huge variety of objects can be lumped into this category, from furniture to timepieces and other antiques, jewellery, vintage sport cars, musical instruments, stamps and even firearms of particular historical interest. Of course, these are movable assets whose procurement is usually undertaken for the sheer joy of adding to one’s collection —and deep, intimate knowledge of the specific market you are collecting in is essential when deciding what to buy, and what price to pay. Returns on collectibles can be surprisingly good. A studious, diligent philatelist might see as much as 7% growth on their stamp collection, while purchasing a truly ‘classic’ sports car — never mind the fun of driving it around from time to time — might see resale profits in the region of 12-20 percent.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE RISKS INVOLVED While movable assets are certainly attractive investment options, not least of all because of the lifestyle benefits they offer to buyers, there remain some significant risks involved — and potential investors should weigh these considerations carefully before plunging into the waters of asset-based portfolio investment.
As has been mentioned, the market for movable assets is volatile, and the relative value of the objects in your possession can rise and fall dramatically. While this is exciting news if you are able to hold onto the right assets until just the right time to sell, it is also worth bearing in mind that — in the case of dire emergencies — you may not be able to ‘hold out’ for the price you really want (and may even end up incurring big losses in the event of a hurried sale). There is also the question of maintaining, securing and insuring your assets. Christelle Colman, Chief Executive Officer of MUA Insurance Acceptances, urges buyers to find insurance partners with “niche experience and expertise” in the market your asset is located in. She points out, for example, that with classic cars, “because the value actually appreciates over time, the car must be reviewed annually, and the policy updated accordingly.” This kind of diligent ownership is essential, and will help ensure you keep yourself financially protected as you build your assetbased portfolio. Whether it’s committing to a hobby, learning a new skill or helping someone in need, doing something that makes you happy is good for your health, all year round! JENNIFER CAMPBELL
BE HAPPY, FOR HEALTH’S SAKE!
E
veryone deals with their fair share of everyday anxiety – deadlines at work, commuting in rush hour traffic, and never-ending bills can cause even the most positive among us to feel tense from time to time. A little bit of pressure can even be a good thing, keeping us alert and motivated in the face of challenges. But, did you know that prolonged periods of stress can have serious long-term physical effects, including headaches, high blood pressure, and sleeping problems, and can contribute to chronic conditions like depression and heart disease? There's good news though: research shows that it is possible to avoid serious stress in favour of a balanced, happy existence. Here's how:
DO WHAT YOU LOVE According to a study published in the online journal Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences, finding one's vocation – an occupation in which one finds real value and satisfaction, rather than choosing a job for status or money – is an invaluable way to motivate yourself to overcome challenges. You’re also more likely to be productive when you enjoy your work, and when you love what you do; your work won’t feel like a chore.
PLAY MORE By the time we reach adulthood, most of us have forgotten the simple pleasure of play. Research shows, however, that
having fun – by spending time outdoors, engaging with a hobby or just relaxing with friends – has some very real health benefits. Not only does play provide relief from stress, it can boost self-esteem, improve energy and creativity levels and help you to relax. Need some inspiration? Try taking a new class at the gym, like dancing or water aerobics, or play a game with the kids.
LEARN SOMETHING NEW Not only is mastering a new skill rewarding, studies reveal that learning something new can help improve memory. Learning, at any stage in life, also provides a sense of fulfillment, and can make time pass in a happy daze. In fact, the term 'flow 'was coined by a psychologist Mihaly Ccikszentmihalyi in the eighties to describe a state in which one finds one's self so intensely absorbed in a task that one loses track of time and emerges feeling energised and content. To achieve a state of 'flow' try learning something creative, like a musical instrument, or a new craft. Avoid distractions like cell phones and TV, and fully engage with the task for a set period of time.
DO SOMETHING GOOD If you've ever been involved in a charity, done some volunteer work, or even just helped a friend in need, you'll know that doing good feels good. Studies conducted at the Institute for Research on Unlimited Love in New York have found a connection between altruism

and happiness – research found that people who volunteer lived longer than those who don't, and that doing good deeds actually reduces stress levels. Researchers refer to this as a “helper’s high” – the brain produces mood-lifting dopamine as a result of doing something good, so the more good deeds you do, the greater the effect and the more likely you are to feel an overall sense of wellbeing. Another study found that when people who suffered with chronic pain started doing volunteer work, they reported feeling less pain and discomfort and were less prone to depression and anxiety. Helping others gave them a sense of purpose, and helped them manage their own pain better.
CHILL OUT Even with a busy schedule, taking a little time out for your self should be an everyday occurrence. Recent studies have shown that making a conscious effort to relax regularly not only helps us feel calmer, but can also improve digestion, lower blood pressure and boost immunity. Practices such as yoga and meditation are gaining global popularity for their health
benefits –both mental and physical. The practice of mindfulness has also gained mainstream popularity in recent years – the concept is about being fully aware and engaged in daily activities, and being properly aware of both our surroundings and feelings. Mindfulness has many benefits: it reduces stress and anxiety, and helps to improve focus and memory. If you’re new to the idea, try meditating for just five minutes a day – focus closely on your breathing, and whenever your mind starts to wander, bring it back to your breath.
CULTIVATE FRIENDSHIPS It’s no secret that meaningful relationships add value (and fun) to our lives, but according to research, having close friends is good for our health too. Studies have shown that cancer patients with no friendship support are more likely to ‘lose the battle’ than those with close friends, and that having strong social support can help to lower blood pressure, reduce stress levels, decrease the risk of depression and even help diminish the chances of developing dementia later in life.
BE INSPIRED Three women tell us how they found – and stuck to – something they love... THE PART-TIME CREATIVE By day, Caroline Hickson works as a payroll administrator, but her passion for sewing is fuelled by a side-business called Little Grey Wolf, which she recently started in her spare time. She designs and sews pouches, baby blankets and baby mats, and although it's not always easy finding the time and energy after a full day at the office, doing something creative has given her a new sense of fulfillment. Her advice to others? "Just take the plunge and see how it goes. You will be scared, just like I was and still am, but it is worth every minute. Just keep trying, it may not always go to plan and that is all right. Make sure you have someone in your life to encourage you and someone to be your mentor."
lover, she was keen to get involved in the organisation, so when an opportunity to help with a project collecting, sorting and selling books to raise funds presented itself, she jumped at the opportunity. The money raised from the project is used to fund medicines used by the mobile clinic for the animals. Over the past months, Margie has been involved in various other fundraising events, all of which have given her a sense of purpose and helped her settle into retirement. Plus, she's met loads of likeminded people. "Making and getting to know new friends has been an added bonus. Animals lovers all think in the same way and it is so rewarding and encouraging when likeminded people stop to chat."

Teaching is the most fulfilling part of her job, and she loves working with women in an environment that gives them space to explore their sensuality in a way that makes them feel beautiful. Her biggest learning curve when it comes to turning your passion into your work? “Following your dreams takes courage and hard work and creative endeavors are not always financially rewarding. REASONS TO TRY YOGA
This ancient practice has taken the mainstream exercise community by storm. Overall health & wellness for your mind body and soul is the key benefit, and expands to so much more. Here’s why you should give it a try… BY JENNIFER CAMPBELL

WELLNESS YOGA
1
CALM BOOSTS CREATIVITY
The hustle and bustle of our daily routines seldom allows us the time to stop and reflect, or fully explore new ideas that might occur to us in passing. The breathing techniques taught in yoga help to calm the mind, reduce anxiety, and allow a relaxed space in which creative thought can flow more easily. Yoga helps to declutter the mind, and allows us to momentarily forget the distractions and stresses of the day – opening up opportunities for inspiration.
2
NO MORE TUMMY BLUES
If you struggle with bloating and constipation, yoga is worth a try. A number of stretches help to resolve digestive problems by targeting specific organs, and certain practices also incorporate twists that massage the abdominal area. Certain poses help to improve blood flow to the digestive organs, reduce acid and strengthen the digestive muscles.
3 4
REAL RELAXATION
One of the most well known (and loved) benefits of practicing yoga is the relaxation it brings. In fact, a study conducted at Ohio State University in the United States, found that just twenty minutes of meditation and yoga in the workplace lowered stress by more than ten percent in employees. An added bonus? The twentyminute practice also improved sleep quality.
EASE BACK AND SHOULDER PAIN
Studies have shown that yoga can reduce back pain, and in some cases, it can decrease the need for pain medication. The practice helps to strengthen muscles, lengthen the spine and improve posture, all of which can help to soothe occasional backache. Simple poses like a forward bend stretch the hamstrings and back muscles, and provide relief for tight shoulders – it’s an ideal exercise if you spend your day sitting at a desk.
5
IMPROVE FLEXIBILITY
With regular practice, yoga helps to loosen the muscles, allowing for better flexibility. Forward bends help to stretch the hamstrings, while there are a range of poses designed to loosen the hips and shoulders. Increased flexibility helps to prevent injuries, and can also ease pain and improve balance.

FIND YOUR ENERGY
If exercising is the last thing you feel like doing first thing in the morning or after a long day at work, there’s good news! Yoga is actually a natural energy-booster. Particular poses stimulate blood flow, energise the nervous system and can reduce feelings of fatigue. The practice of deep breathing taught in yoga also helps to boost energy levels and releases endorphins for that post-workout feel-good factor.
7 8 9
GET STRONG
Regular practice of yoga helps to tone muscles, and repetition of poses increases muscle endurance and definition. Although it takes quite advanced yoga practice to build muscle, it is possible to significantly develop core strength, which contributes to better posture, prevents injury, and improves balance.
BE HAPPY
Do you ever walk out of a yoga class with a smile on your face? If so, you’re not alone. According to a study conducted at the Boston University Medical Centre, yoga may have a more positive effect on mood and anxiety than other forms of exercise. In fact, researchers found that with further study, yoga could be considered as a therapy for some mental disorders.
JOIN A COMMUNITY
Besides the physical benefits of following a regular exercise regime, joining a yoga class means you get to meet and practice with a range of like-minded people. Plus, exercising with friends is a great motivator – you’re much less likely to skip a workout if you know others are relying on you to be there!
10
HAVE FUN
The trend of “laughing yoga” is growing in popularity – the idea is to relearn the simple childhood pleasure of laughter. Laughing not only makes one feel better, it also has health benefits like reducing stress and improving circulation. A typical “laughing yoga” class incorporates clapping, chanting, breathing exercises, stretches and laughing games. While this practice shouldn’t replace cardio and weight-bearing exercise completely, it’s a fun way to work out! SV

VANESSA GOUNDEN PROFILE
UPLIFTING & UPMARKET
From a dream to a reality, Vanessa Gounden reaches for the sky, and takes underprivileged counterparts with her. BY LAUREN ZUIDEMA

anessa Gounden, a personality and brand on its own, is well known for her successes in the mining, healthcare, financial services as well as the lifestyle and fashion industries. Her fashion brands include ‘Vanessa Gounden’ as well as the ever-popular and growing D’Ore Fashion stores. Recently in 2015 she launched yet another D’Ore Fashion store in the fashion hub of Claremont, Cavendish Street. D’Ore Fashion, as a brand, was tired and in desperate need of a rescue when Vanessa took hold of the reigns and decided to follow her childhood dream of owning her very own fashion label, she
purchased the brand. Its success rate soured in a matter of months, and today she boasts stores across South Africa, and soon to make its mark internationally as well.
SKILLS DEVELOPMENT IN CAPE TOWN Vanessa, a born and raised, proudly South African personality has always seen the importance of uplifting a community and giving back to the land that she has gained most of her successes from. It was an obvious development that soon took flight following the D’Ore Fashion purchase. In 2012 she opened a dedicated factory in Westlake, Cape Town to take over the production
of her garments. Over 40 employees from underprivileged backgrounds, and who live in the Cape Flats areas have been trained and upskilled from their old South African manufacturing sector backgrounds. These skilled ladies now produce exceptionally high-end, luxury fashion garments not only for the D’Ore Fashion stores but also for the Vanessa Gounden mono-brand that reaches international shores. Next time we come across one of Vanessa’s proud garments, I’m sure we’ll all take a few minutes longer to appreciate and acknowledge the outstanding craftsmanship that comes with her brands. SV

TASTE WINE
WINE FOR THOUGHT Wine extraordinaire, Emile Joubert, with over 30 years experience, shares his top picks for the coming autumn months. BY EMILE JOUBERT
T
hese days we rarely have time to reconfigure our corkscrews without another wine region popping up in South Africa. This is good, as it displays our wine industries pioneering nature with old industry hands as well as new blood-seeking, farflung pockets of soil and different climate in which to plant vines and contribute to the exciting diversity of brand South Africa. The outer regions of the Swartland, the snow-capped peaks of Ceres and the desolate spaces of Sutherland in the Karoo are cases in point. With autumn setting in and the first rains blowing in from the north-west, I always like to remind myself that the true home of the Cape wine story starts in Constantia. Dating back to 1685 when Simon van der Stel began to develop this magnificent stretch of land into a wine farm, and through the 1800’s when its sweet wines were the toast of European nobility enjoyed by an exiled but thirsty Napoleon Bonaparte, and often referred back to in English classics today, Groot Constantia has taken its place as the ancestral home of the South African wine industry. In February this year wine maker Danie de Wet from De Wetshof received the Groot Constantia 1659 Honorary Award, annually presented to an industry legend. Upon receiving this award his first words were aimed at Groot Constantia: “This is where it all began. This is where South Africa’s wine makers have always taken their inspiration, and you must know that Groot Constantia is the PO Box 1 for the SA Wine
Industry.” Today the estate is freely accessible with the glorious old Cloete Cellar, enigmatic Manor House and other historic buildings in superb nick. Groot Constantia is still at the forefront and amongst the best in terms of quality wine making. The autumnal chill doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy white wine, especially if it is a full and complex Chardonnay just like the Groot Constantia 2014 (R175). Cellarmaster Boela Gerber has shown that while the cooler Constantia region might be known as the Sauvignon Blanc region, the royal white Burgundian Chardonnay grape is more than at home here too. This Chardonnay is aged in oak, as required by this extremely multidimensional grape, the wood is there to provide structure and depth instead of overpowering the wine with splinters and cuttings. Flavours of citrus, lemon curd and flowers abound and give the wine a fresh, uplifting taste while subtle hints of spice and grilled nuts offer the comfort and sustenance a great Chardonnay has to offer. No mention of Constantia is complete, however, without incorporating the nectar known

as Grand Constance (R490). If you never drink sweet wine, for some or other strange reason, then allow Grand Constance to break those barriers. This wine is made from Muscat de Frontignan grapes, the same variety that the famous old Constantia’s were made from. Picked when wrinkled and shrivelled, and packed with natural sugar, the juice is fermented in old barrels to preserve the full whack of the natural sweet grape flavours as well as show what time and ferment does to them. What a stupendous wine. Despite the large sugar content, this is no cloying, tongue-cementing mouth of sweet nothing. A fresh acidic breeze keeps the wine perky and alive, with tastes of apricot, orange peel and cloves making this a heady, thoroughly enjoyable wine. A world-beater. Of course, autumn is also time for inspired cooking and good eating with hearty beef and lamb casseroles simmering away in spacious ovens. Red wine has a place here, and I personally enjoy a smooth Shiraz. Whilst not in the legendary class of Groot Constantia, Paarl’s Backsberg Estate Cellars have been around for 100 years this year. So while in mode nostalgia, I gave the Backsberg Pumphouse Shiraz 2011 (R95) a ‘going over’ while preparing my legendary Normandy lamb stew. Shiraz ripens perfectly on the slopes of Simonsberg where Backsberg is
situated and you can taste this in the elegant, refined structure of the wine. While not shy to show opulent fruit – think plums and mulberries, this Shiraz has a sour-cherry crunch to it as well as an enticing hint of white pepper. No, I would not rate this as a non-stop glugging wine, but though expansive and defined, it does have a very more-ish freshness. Here in the winelands we have become awfully civilised, eschewing stodgy desserts for a cheese platter (hold the lost grapes, walnuts and Provita, please). And with cheese, one turns, again, to the sweet stuff where it must be said that South Africa makes some of the best Noble Late Harvest wines in the world. I am very partial to the Neethlingshof The Maria 2014 (R160), a cool, energetic sweet wine made from Weisser Riesling grapes. These were, as the name ‘Noble Late’ implies, late in the season when sugar levels are loaded. The trick is to allow enough acidity to counter the sweetness so as to maintain the life and verve in the wine. Neethlingshof winemaker De Wet Viljoen gets it right, delivering a wine of true grace and beauty. Flowers, honey and rosepetals lie on the surface, while flavours of sliced papaya, pears and red apples make a wine of delicious drinkability. Serve this wine chilled and reminisce about another passing summer as the winter sets in. SV

he Northern Hemisphere is blooming into spring, quite literally, making it the perfect escape if you want to enjoy warmer temperatures for a little while longer. There are plenty of typical options to choose from but we’ve opted to explore some of the more beautiful and lesser visited places during our autumn months.
THE CHERRY BLOSSOMS OF OSAKA, JAPAN March, April and May are the months of Hanami (cherry blossom viewing), and it’s quite literally a feast for the eyes of a majestic kind. All the stories, poems and art inspired by the short-lived, yet exquisite cherry blossom known as Sakura cannot possibly express the sheer magic of this rare bloom. Of course, Osaka being the 2nd largest city in Japan is, in itself, worth visiting – with a stunning mix of both the modern and the ancient thrown together. The city is alive with energy throughout the day and night, allowing for loads of adventure-filled activities and culture-full experiences to throw yourself at. Your search for the finest Sakura blooms should start at the Kema Sakuranomiya Park. The park runs alongside the Okawa River and is built on a river terrace between the Kema Araizeki and the Temmabashi Bridge. It expands over several kilometers and is filled with nearly 5 000 cherry trees and
many paths to walk along to enjoy them – not to mention numerous ideal picnic spots. The park is easily accessible and there is no entrance fee – a definite bonus! Combine your search for the best blooms with a cultural experience at the Osaka Castle. The castle epitomizes the romantic beauty of Japan in the spring and offers a chance to learn more about the city’s heritage at its museum. For your Hanami experience at the castle, the Nishinomaru Gardens is the place to be. Spread over the former western citadel, the garden is filled with 600 cherry trees, as well as the Tea House, and the former Osaka Guest House. Visitors are also treated to fantastic views of the castle from below. Osaka offers the best of both worlds for the visitor seeking both a cultural and shopping experience. The city boasts a massive number of shops, malls and arcades – including the longest above and underground arcade in the country (known as a Shōtengai), which is 2.6km long. Other key shopping areas in the city include Umeda, which is home to the fully underground shopping mall of Hankyu Sanbangai, and Den Den Town, which is the ultimate electronic and anime/manga shopping district. Of course no trip to somewhere exotic is complete without dipping your fingers in the local cuisine. Touted by world famous English food writer Michael Bloom as the cuisine capital of the world, you can be

“Osaka offers the best of both worlds for the visitor seeking both a cultural and shopping experience” sure of a particularly outstanding experience. The obvious choice to start with would be sushi, and while we have access to many great sushi restaurants here in Cape Town, there is nothing quite like eating a traditional dish in its home country. Pair your meal with Sake, Japans signature alcoholic drink to complete your experience. Other daring, yet delicious delicacies to try include okonomiyaki – a pan fried
batter cake, and takoyaki – fried octopus in batter. The flowers, the food and the fantastic weather makes a trip to this part of the world during the months of March to early April an absolute must for the travel bucket list.
FIND SOLITUDE IN PRASLIN, SEYCHELLES No matter what time of year it is it’s always a good time to take an island holiday in the Seychelles… and there are definite perks to visiting in the months of autumn. Praslin, the second largest, but far less populated island, offers the ideal weather conditions for an autumn visit. The island is sheltered from the winds to a large degree and the temperatures are not quite as hot and humid as it is in the summer months, making days spent on the beach much more enjoyable.
And the beaches Praslin has to offer! There are just fewer than 20 beaches to be enjoyed around the island with several of them regularly making top ten lists around the world. However, it is wise to stick to the eastern and northern parts of the island during autumn, as seaweed often washes up on the southern beaches. If you can pull yourself away from luxurious beach days in this paradise, you’ll find there is an incredible tropical world waiting to be explored. An ideal start would be where it was thought the Garden of Eden was discovered – the enchantingly beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site – The Vallee de Mai Nature Reserve. On your visit you may have the chance to see the rare Cocoa De Mer – a coconut palm tree that produces a ‘double coconut’ and is now only endemic to the islands of Praslin and Curieuse, having become extinct everywhere else. Praslin also happens to be a short boat ride from a number of the smaller surrounding islands. A trip to the Island of Curieuse will give you the opportunity to see the hump-headed parrotfish as you arrive at
the island, Aldabra tortoises in the wild, and even the breeding grounds for the Hawksbill and green turtles. Continue to get close to the natural surrounds of the Seychelles with another daytrip to Island Cousine. The island can be reached by boat or helicopter – but a favourite is definitely by means of helicopter. Not only does it create less of a disturbance to the ecosystem of the island, the views from Praslin to Cousine are truly out of this world. Once you arrive at the island there’s an array of activities to choose from. Many visitors choose to get involved in the conservation effort. The work involved ranges from planting a tree or monitoring the turtles or enjoying an organic treatment at the island’s spa. If you’re wondering about what it would be like to live in paradise, take a trip to Eden Island and spend a night or two in one of the stunning private homes

WANDER THROUGH THE TULIPS OF AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS Europe is calling and while it’s tempting to head to the usual spots from June onwards… the crowds just make it that much less appealing. So join us in giving the usual European spots and summer crowds a miss, and maximize on the spring months between March and May in Amsterdam. Not only will you get your European fix, you’ll also get the chance to take in some of its most beloved spring-time traditions and festivals. The city bursts to life after its sleepy winter months, the little cafés and terraces become fuller, the days become noticeably warmer and the nights are shorter. But of course, most noticeably, its colours become brighter with shades of red, yellow, pink and purple as the tulips start to show their faces. There are many ways to take in the beauty of the tulip blooms, but the most popular tradition is taking a bike ride through the bulb farms. Whether you’re a Tour de France level cyclist, or just able to meander along at a leisurely pace, it doesn’t matter – there are many paths to choose from, all of which give you unparalleled views of the multi-coloured tulip fields. If cycling isn’t your thing then make sure you arrive when the Keukenhof Gardens open at the start of March. The tulips are the obvious attraction, but don’t miss out on the wonderful tapestry of colours created by the rest of the 7 million flowers, including
daffodils, narcissus, and hyacinth to name a few. For a true taste of Dutch tradition visit the city towards the end of April when King’s Day (formerly Queen’s Day) is celebrated on the 27th. The festivities start early - with flea markets known as vrijmarkt popping up all over the city, which soon turn to street parties as the day turns to night. For those travelling with families, head on down to Vondelpark where there is live music, many a delicious foodstall and plenty of fun and games for children. No matter what you decide to do on King’s Day, make sure you do it dressed in the colour orange – the colour of the House Oranje-Nassau – the Dutch Royal House. No matter when you choose to visit this vibrant city this spring you can be sure to enjoy all the appeals of European culture, with a few less of the regular tourists. SV

SPORT MOUNTAIN BIKING
GET ON YOUR BIKE Wheels of Freedom: 7 Reasons why more and more South Africans are getting into mountain biking. BY DAVID FORD
M
ountain biking is emerging as a popular ‘adventure sport’ among South Africans of all ages. Our country is crisscrossed with spectacular, well-maintained trails, and — with hundreds of riders seeking them out each and every weekend — there has never been a better time to make a serious hobby out of off-road biking. With the upcoming Cape Epic cycle tour expected to attract more than 1,200 local and international mountain bikers to the Western Cape in March, we give you seven excellent reasons to take up this exciting, invigorating pastime this year.
1
BE PART OF A GROWING COMMUNITY
Mountain biking is one of the fastest-growing leisure activities in the country, if not the world, and even the most cursory of Google searches will turn up an amazing amount of online support for new enthusiasts. Read reviews of trails, seek advice from experienced riders and make new friends by plugging into this buzzing community.

SPORT MOUNTAIN BIKING
2
EASY TO GET INTO
Unlike some other sports, mountain biking is relatively easy to pick up. An entry-level bike and rudimentary safety equipment will not cost you an arm and a leg, and you don’t need — like with football, for example — to scare up an entire ‘team’ of willing friends in order to get active. Maintaining your bike is also fun and manageable (and may soon develop into a hobby in and of itself).
3
GET FIT, STAY HEALTHY
It is recommended to do at least 2-4 hours of light to moderate exercise every week, and mountain biking will provide the kind of varied cardiovascular workout that will keep your doctor happy. Although trails might be bumpy, mountain biking is still easier on your joints than other popular fitness choices such as jogging or squash. It also boasts a huge advantage over road biking, as this exercise is done outdoors, in the fresh air (and not surrounded by CO2emitting motor vehicles).
4
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
It is a stark reality of today’s world that we all need to show greater consideration for the environment in our lifestyle choices. Even when one factors in the carbon footprint of manufacturing a new bike, cycling remains one of the most carbon-friendly leisure activities out there. Indeed, many bikers report that — within 6 months — they graduate from ‘weekend-only’ riding to taking a bike into work, thereby reducing their dependency on cars and other forms of petrol-powered transportation.
5
BIKING TAKES YOU TO BEAUTIFUL PLACES
South Africa is uniquely blessed with an amazing network of mountain bike trails spread throughout our nine geographically diverse provinces. The Cape Epic route, for example, is one of the few in the world deemed hors categorie (‘beyond categorisation’) by the Union Cycliste Internationale (the sport’s world governing body). ABSA Cape Epic © warrenski/Flickr Creative Commons
Mountain biking offers you a chance to get out of the city every weekend and spend some time in smaller, quieter, more rural parts of the country, meeting people from different walks of life and soaking up some of South Africa’s immense natural beauty along the way.
6
ZEN AND THE ART OF MOUNTAIN BIKING
Mountain biking is also deeply therapeutic. Being a solo activity that demands intense concentration, focus and awareness on the ‘here and now’, means that mountain biking has the wonderful added benefit of clearing the head and revitalising the mind. Indeed, the internet is awash with accounts of bikers achieving (what they refer to as) “moments of perfect clarity” on the trail, where they catch themselves being “completely present and in the moment”, and where the usual distractions and stresses of everyday life seem to evaporate completely.
7
KEEP IMPROVING
As your stamina and technique improve after a few months on the bike, you can continue to challenge yourself by improving your times, or seeking out evertougher trails. There is also ample opportunity to put yourself against other SA mountain bikers in races and contests held throughout the year. The ability to set (and achieve) concrete goals is essential to the success of taking up any new habit or fitness regime, and mountain biking offers a very clear-cut way of keeping track of your physical improvement. FULL OF RUNNING

rom humble beginnings in 1970, when just 26 people entered, the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon has grown to become one of South Africa’s must-do events, attracting runners from as far afield as the North West Province, the United Kingdom and even Samoa. In fact, every year, the Two Oceans spreads its wings wider across the world, enticing foreign runners to spend their Easter weekend in Cape Town. The race has become so popular on the global calendar that the organisers instigated an International Friendship Run, so that foreign visitors and locals could stretch their legs on a 5km course the Friday before the main event. Runners are encouraged to run in national dress or wave their national flag, creating a colourful spectacle as they jog through the streets of Green Point and around the iconic Cape Town Stadium.
The growth and popularity of the event is so astonishing that for the first time in the history of the Two Oceans, the Ultra Marathon was sold out this year in early January. Having started in 1998, and attracting nearly 4000 participants that year, the Half Marathon is now the hottest ticket in town, with 16 000 entries routinely selling out in a matter of days (sometimes hours). The Trail Run, the most recent addition to the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon family, is also a hit, with the short and long route entries being snapped up in minutes. Looking back, it seems scarcely believable that the first Two Oceans Marathon, called the Celtic 35-mile Road Race for the first two years of its existence, produced only 15 finishers. The winner of that event was the bare-footed Dirkie Steyn, who ran a 3:55:50 – just quick enough to qualify for a silver medal these days.

THE WORLD OF ENDURANCE
For Old Mutual, the Two Oceans is just one jewel in the crown of a glittering sponsorship portfolio. The spirit of an endurance event also speaks to the company’s desire to encourage long-term saving amongst its customers. “With endurance events and saving you have to plan ahead,” says Karen Thomas, Old Mutual Head of Brand. “We certainly see a natural link between looking at a long-term goal in running and cycling and that of investing. You need to plan, stay the course, endure dips in performance and ultimately build towards your goal.” With that in mind, Old Mutual has endorsed and sponsored events like the Old Mutual joBerg2c, the Om die Dam Marathon, the Sowetan Marathon, the Comrades Marathon and the Wild Series, a series of events that put money back into conservation efforts in unique parts of the South African environment. “We hope that we are touching peoples lives in a positive way through these events,” says Thomas. “We love the fact that the Wild Series speaks to

With a longterm strategy that seeks to mirror that of investing, Old Mutual World of Endurance will provide athletes with all the necessary tools to prepare for their goals, to plan their training, to be motivated to stay the course and do great things by achieving their goals,” says Thomas. Information is the key to planning a successful ride or run, and that’s exactly what Old Mutual World of Endurance will provide: a place where entrants, customers and future participants can learn from the best coaches, the widest range of resources and the most experienced athletes in South Africa. old lines are refined with an overpowering sensation of sophistication and class. Throw in a powerful 2-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine matched with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and the result, flawless perfection coupled with brute force.
FROM A FAR The GS 200t EX, from a far, is a sensation on its own. ‘Sedan’ and ‘sexy’ rarely form part of the same sentence but in this case we’ll have to make an exception. The sharp lines on the nose coupled with the soft smooth wheel arches, and the overall streamlined effect is an A+ of its kind. The rear-end has also seen a bit of a lift with new tail lamps and a redesigned bumper to add to its perfection.
UP CLOSE AND EXTREMELY PERSONAL Expect executive finishes on the inside with the entire family kept in mind. Space, space and more space is the name of the game here. The indoor features and trimmings throughout have a strong metal finish which adds to its opulence, not to mention its leather-laced seats. Let your eyes drop from the dash to the centre console and you will be thrown back in time with the analogue clock nestled between the refined and updated air vents. When it comes to the multimedia system Lexus gave the GS models a brand new setup in 2015, and again in 2016. The
12.3-inch screen gains full-screen map capability when equipped with navigation. Other multimedia changes include enhanced voice recognition and graphics. New side ‘enter’ buttons on the Remote Touch Interface controller, and the shortcut menu on the side of the screen, make it even easier to operate climate control, audio, phone, navigation and more.
EXPECT NO MERCY 4-cylinders, a 2-litre turbocharged engine and enough horse power to pull a 2 ton-rear wheel drive load is exactly what you can expect. An impressive 0 – 100km/h will be reached within 7.3 sec flat. For the not-so-reliable South African roads ridden with potholes, the Tyre Pressure Monitor will make sure you are notified if you lose tyre pressure. The Park Distance Control will alert you if you’re parking in a tight spot and will guide you all the way. The GS range also offers a robust 350 F-Sport, packing a bigger punch with its 3.5 litre V6 engine.
TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS The GS 200t EX comes with a standard 4 year or 100 000 km warranty, whichever comes first. Service intervals are spaced over 15 000 km’s at a time. A comfortable R688 600.00 is all that will affect your pocket with the GS 200t EX, and a cool R777 700.00 for the GS 350 F-SPORT, a well-worth spend to sit in this lap of luxury. SV

olvo has been around for almost 90 years. They started their journey with the ÖV4 in 1927, and produced just under 1000 units. The ÖV4 – affectionately known as “Jakob” - produced 21 kW @2000 rpm, quite impressive for the 1920’s. Now, in the 21st century, we’re sitting in a front row seat again to witness the evolution of the sheer driving excellence coupled with class and sophistication, this time round they’ve given us the Volvo XC60.
THEIR IDEA OF LUXURY Volvo has dubbed the all-new XC90 as ‘our idea of luxury’ and quite frankly the same can go for the XC60. This crossover SUV has managed to capture the essence of visual pleasure. On approach you are welcomed with a face of pure confidence. The oversized Volvo Iron Mark logo nestled in the grille sends shivers down your spine they mean business.
The XC60 might be classified as a ‘miniSUV’ however there is nothing ‘mini’ about this one. The seemingly smaller size of the XC60 has not compromised the lap of luxury inside. Starting at the clear uncluttered dash you will be greeted with the acclaimed Sensus Connect infotainment system and the neatly designed floating centre stack - the best in its class. The seats are incredibly comfortable, making any long journey one to enjoy.
A LITTLE-BIG POWERHOUSE The XC60 D4 boasts a 4-cylinder, twin turbocharged diesel engine, and kicks out an impressive powerful 140kW and 400Nm. The 8-speed Geartronic transmission is what will take you from 0 – 100km/h in 8.1 seconds with a top speed of 210km/h. The drive is incredibly smooth and the steering is really responsive, making this the perfect family car.
MAKE YOUR PICK There are 4 models in the XC60 range. Prices start from R578 000.00. All Volvo’s comes standard with a 5 year / 100 000km warranty and maintenance plan, 5 year / unlimited mileage roadside assistance (includes a Skytrax tracker unit – hardware & installation) and DataDot application.
