The beneﬁts of lessons outweigh the costs BY GAYLA GRACE Piano lessons were not an option for me as a child. As a trained musician, my father insisted his four daughters start piano lessons at an early age. I didn’t always enjoy it and often grumbled about the practice sessions before and after school. My teacher was strict and had high expectations, but I’m thankful today that piano lessons were a requirement my parents didn’t budge on. Music lessons compete with a host of other activities for our children’s time and our money. How do we determine if music lessons are right for our child? Does it make a difference in the long run if we expose our children to music education? The evidence of several studies supports the conclusion that the benefits of music lessons outweigh the cost and inconvenience it poses to parents to provide them. WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH SHOW? A study led by Dr. Glenn Schellenberg with 6-year-olds and another study led by Dr. James Catterall at UCLA, tracking more than 25,000 students over a 10-year period, cite the advantages of music lessons: Increase in IQ scores Promotes intellectual development Higher test scores on standardized tests and other proficiency exams More cooperative with teachers and peers Better able to express ideas Improvements in eye-hand coordination, concentration, memory development, listening skills and the process of learning Enhanced self-esteem and confidence as they perform in front of a teacher weekly and participate regularly in recitals. Studying music encourages self-discipline and perseverance, time management and organizational skills. Weekly lessons require students to prioritize their schedules to allow for regular practice time. When taking lessons as a child, I tried to be prepared with each assigned piece to avoid an uncomfortable lesson or

reprimand by my teacher. I was actively involved in church activities and sports, but I learned to manage my time to allow adequate practice time on the piano. WHEN SHOULD MY CHILD START? Music lessons can begin as early as 4, but an older child (7-8) has a greater attention span and focus for a musical instrument. It’s important that a child has the desire to play an instrument, and not be forced to take lessons, but encouraged when showing an interest. Experimenting with different instruments will help a child determine what instrument he is best suited for. If a child begins lessons, he should commit to several months of study to gain a feel for the instrument. WHERE CAN I FIND A TEACHER? Finding a teacher that your child can relate to is important. Learning to play an instrument should be fun and interactive, although it requires a fair amount of work. Referrals from other parents and students offer valuable insight. Interviewing a potential teacher helps identify teaching

styles and personality traits before beginning lessons. Discuss the fee schedule and policies regarding make-up lessons. IS IT TOO LATE TO LEARN? It’s never too late to learn to play a musical instrument. As a piano instructor, I loved working with teenage and adult students, who were often more committed and disciplined in the learning process. Older students prioritize their lessons and practice time over other commitments and have better focus and longer attention spans, which allows for faster learning and greater satisfaction with the process. Learning to play a musical instrument is like earning an education: Once you obtain the skill, it can’t be taken away from you, and it can provide enjoyment and satisfaction for years to come.

FUN kid activities for summer and beyond TRIBUNE NEWS SERVICE With the school break here, parents are hoping their children don’t succumb to the “summer slide,” when students forget much of what they learned, losing as much as three months of math and reading skills during the summer, according to the National Summer Learning Association. This can make starting up again in the fall as dreaded as those final exams. Our brains are like muscles: When we don’t exercise them, they lose their form. . Ron and Lynda Bates, owners of a Tutor Doctor, a private tutoring franchise, provide the following tips and ideas for activities that are fun and simultaneously build important life skills, including organization, time management and goal setting. Eat locally. Take a trip to a local farmers market to learn where food comes from, the resources needed to grow it and which foods are in season. Give students a list of fruits and vegetables to find at the market, encouraging them to identify which fruit is ripe enough to be picked and how to

handle food safely for the trip home. Good places to start: Marando Farms in Fort Lauderdale, Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market in Boynton Beach, Coconut Grove Organic Market (Saturdays) in Miami. Explore the real world. Visit local zoos, botanical gardens or other places where kids can see and learn about new things. Encourage them to bring a journal and record observations with a drawing or a description. Later, search the Internet or read wildlife books to learn more about the plants, rocks and animals they found. Good places to start: Flamingo Gardens in Davie, Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach, Zoo Miami. Plan a summer outing. Get kids involved with the planning and organization that goes into hosting a family gathering, barbecue or picnic. Kids can make the guest list, design and send out invitations, keep track of RSVPs and choose the venue, activities and menu. If you’re going to the pool, have them choose the best day/time

to go, put together a list of supplies needed and plan an agenda for the day. Get busy in the kitchen. Involve your child in meal planning and cooking, which reinforce the importance of following directions, sorting ingredients and managing time – all key elements in organization. Challenge them to help put together a shopping list containing everything needed, help shop and act as “head chef.” Go geocaching like a pirate. This is a wonderful treasure hunt, where participants create “geocaches,” small treasure chests with a log book so you can record your name and when you found it. Participants typically use GPS devices to find the geocaches, whose coordinates, along with some clues, can be found on geocaching websites. Some geocaches contain items that you can swap, such as flashlights, compasses, etc. Good place to start: To find the GPS coordinates of geocaches in your area, visit geocaching.com/play
