Roxanne Vargas, host of NBC's "6 in the Mix"
Pregnant TV anchors share their journeys with viewers BY JOHNNY DIAZ, SUN SENTINEL Oh, mama, how times have changed. Pregnancy used to be taboo on television. Remember the 1952 “I Love Lucy’’ episode when even using the word “pregnant’’ on screen was deemed controversial? Well, these days, TV news personalities are all about the sharing when it comes to their journeys into motherhood. Using the small screen, as well as social media, the latest crop of moms-to-be who are on the airwaves – Roxanne Vargas, host of WTVJ-Ch. 6’s lifestyle morning show “6 in the Mix” and meteorologists Julie Durda of WPLG-Ch. 10 and Lissette Gonzalez of WFOR-Ch. 4 – are giving audiences a peek into their personal lives. Vargas announced her pregnancy on the air during the Halloween episode of “6 in the Mix.” And she had the perfect costume for the occasion. “I’m an oven – with a bun baking for another 5 months!” she said during the October broadcast. “So excited to share with you all, we are expecting our second baby!” Already mom to 2-year-old Julian

Armando, Vargas is expecting another boy in April. “My belly is hard to miss, which is great and part of the process,” said Vargas, who is married to Danny Rodriguez, a senior designer at WTVJ-Ch. 6 in Miramar. “The other day, we were closing the show, and I had to apologize to viewers because my stomach growled so loudly. I am so sorry, this child is hungry.” Her pregnancies have even inspired news stories. During her first pregnancy, the Miami Lakes resident did a piece on a prenatal yoga class. More recently, she reported a feature on a company that makes colorful hospital gowns for moms. “If you look good, you will feel good, even if you’re pushing a baby out of your body,” said Vargas. “It’s a beautiful way of owning your own labor.” The viewer interaction has been great, she said. When she Tweeted a photo she took with NBC “Telenovela” star Eva Longoria in January, “all the comments were about the baby bump, and that is so kind and humbling and really sweet... “A kind comment like the ones that I have received really make a huge differ-

ence in my day,” Vargas said. Over at Channel 4, when she wasn’t delivering the day’s weather news, Gonzalez was busy sharing the news of her pregnancy via social media. Each week, she posted photos or videos of her belly. Gonzalez’s second daughter with husband Antonio Chinchilla, a financial analyst, was expected in March. When she shared a Facebook update that her first daughter, Sofia, was getting up in the middle of the night as Gonzalez prepared to go to work, fellow mothers chimed in with advice. Wrote one Miami mom, Melissa Neyor: “It happens all the time. Especially around this age. ... Just rock her or pat her back inside her crib, and she will fall back asleep.” This is the first child for Channel 10’s Durda, of Miramar, and her husband, David Radliff, national TV sales manager for CBS Television and MY33. To keep viewers in the loop, Durda dressed in blue to reveal the baby’s gender during the morning newscast on Feb. 4. She’s expecting a boy in June.

Preparation, support important for breastfeeding success
BY JESSICA LAMAR In 2012, despite the fact that she covered herself, mega superstar Beyonce was ridiculed for breastfeeding her daughter, Blue Ivy, in a public restaurant. And in 2015, Kristie Quinones was asked to leave Aventura Mall for breastfeeding publicly. Shortly afterward, breastfeeding moms rallied at the mall to show their support for Quinones. Despite the controversy breastfeeding can generate, many moms embrace it. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 77 percent of new mothers are breastfeeding their babies, an increase from 71 percent a decade ago. Not only are they breastfeeding, they are also breastfeeding for at least six months. But while breastfeeding is a natural way to feed our babies, it is not always easy to get started. Many mothers face challenges such as low milk production, babies latching on properly, sore nipples, anxiety and the like. One solution for such concerns is a lactation consultant, a profes-
sional who teaches and trains mothers how to breastfeed their babies. Lactation consultants can be found at hospitals, clinics and private offices. Many of them also teach classes during pregnancy. Pamela Mazzella Dibosco, of Davie, is a 20-year lactation consultant who serves mothers throughout South Florida. Besides working with mothers, she breastfed seven of her own children. She strongly believes that other forms of feeding should be an alternative to breastfeeding, and she enjoys helping mothers learn to breastfeed their babies. With breastfeeding, preparation is important. Women who are interested in breastfeeding should watch other mothers who breastfeed and attend classes before the baby arrives, Dibosco said. She said the most common issues mothers face are pain while breastfeeding and low milk production. It is a myth that all women can make enough milk, Dibosco said. Considering the medical history or genetics of a mother, the mother might face difficulties beyond her control, and a professional can help her find a solution. Some mothers may try to increase their milk supply by avoiding certain things or adding certain things to their diet, but Dibosco said that can sometimes make the situation worse. One way to pinpoint milk supply issues is to track the baby’s weight, she said.
The baby should regain birth weight by the second week. Steady weight gain is a sure sign that the baby is getting enough milk, she said, so it is important for moms to make their routine pediatrician visits. Another myth is that breastfeeding should be easy. Although it is natural, “we do not grow up in a breastfeeding culture, nor do we spend our lives with other women breastfeeding and caring for babies,” Dibosco said. “These behaviors are natural and also learned. While there are many reasons why breastfeeding may not be easy, the idea that it is always natural does not fit with our current way of life. “Most of what we know about feeding babies is about how babies drink bottles. Our experience from the time we are very young is of bottles being given to dolls. We also have smaller families than in the past. We don’t see our mothers and aunts all with their babies breastfeeding. We lose the knowledge that comes with living the experience because our society’s way of caring for babies is different,” she said. “We cannot expect to find something easy and natural when we never saw it, never experienced it, and are just learning it for the first time.”

Feeling Blue? Get checked out if symptoms extend beyond a few weeks BY CHRISSIE FERGUSON Becoming a mother is one of life’s greatest blessings. It’s a time of great joy and excitement. But this isn’t the case for all new moms. In fact, a large majority of women experience feelings of sadness and anxiety after giving birth. While symptoms may simply be the result of “the baby blues,” some suffer from postpartum depression – a more serious mood disorder that affects 1-2 out of 10 women, according to experts. Trying to differentiate between the two can sometimes be difficult. After all, doesn’t a lack of sleep make everyone feel weepy and irritable? The postpartum blues, otherwise known as “the baby blues,” occur in about 85 percent of women, says Dr. Dikea RoussosRoss, director of Women’s Health at the Shands Medical Plaza in Gainesville. Symptoms of tearfulness, lack of sleep, irritability and poor appetite occur a few days after delivery. The good thing about postpartum blues is that it is usually limited and resolves itself in the first two weeks after delivery, says Roussos-Ross, who is also the director of the Healthy Start Psychosocial Program at UF Health and a University of Florida College of Medicine faculty member. Postpartum depression (PPD), on the other hand, occurs when depressed mood and loss of interest or pleasure in activities occurs for at least two weeks and continues for up to six to 12 months after delivery. “A woman might be able to recognize [PPD] herself if she starts experiencing feelings of inadequacy with appetite disturbance since delivery, difficulty breastfeeding and bonding with the baby, as well as hostility toward the baby,” says Dr. Yocoima Plaza, an Ob-Gyn with The Institute of Women’s Health and Body in West Palm Beach. Good nutrition and social support help keep PPD symptoms at bay. Additionally, studies have shown that women who breastfeed have a decreased risk of suffering postpartum depression. “If diagnosed with postpartum depression,” says Plaza, “women should be encouraged to continue breastfeeding, not only because of the benefits to the baby,
10
SOUTH FLORIDA PARENTING •
but also to the mother, such as the maintenance of bonding.” However, women should not blame themselves for the feelings they might experience after the birth of their child. It’s important to remember that depression is a psychiatric disorder. “It can be genetic, so (some women) may be more at risk,” says Roussos-Ross. “It’s not that they’ve done something wrong; it’s just something that they have.” Women who believe they are suffering from postpartum depression should not only seek social support from their spouse or family members, but they should immediately contact their Ob-Gyn or primary care physician – someone who can evaluate the severity of their symptoms. Being proactive about treatment is important. Not only will PPD continue to affect the patient if left untreated, but untreated postpartum depression can also have adverse implications for the baby, such as increased crying, colic and heightened arousal. “Long-term effects on the baby may be medical and psychiatric illness,” Plaza says.
With patients experiencing milder symptoms, exercise, therapy or acupuncture may be suggested. Dietary recommendations may include soy and vitamin B. While a more holistic approach could be helpful, this should not preclude the patient from seeking help from others who can make sure they are OK, says RoussosRoss. If a physician or Ob-Gyn finds that symptoms are more severe in a patient, medicine combined with therapy may work best. “Medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s) are effective in the treatment of postpartum depression and can be used when initial treatment of psychotherapy has failed,” says Plaza, “even in breastfeeding women.” Medicine, however, usually takes 4-6 weeks to become effective, so early evaluation in important in getting symptoms treated as soon as possible. “We always want to be very proactive,” says Roussos-Ross. “It doesn’t have to be medicine, but she needs to be under some sort of treatment.”
HOW TO RECOGNIZE PPD: + You have had a baby in the past 12 months and you are experiencing some of these symptoms: + + Feeling overwhelmed + + Can’t eat; have no appetite + + Having feelings of guilt (that you should be handling motherhood better than this) + + Not feeling a bond with your baby + + Having feelings of irritation, anger, hopelessness or sadness + + Sleeping poorly, lacking interest or energy levels have decreased + + Having thoughts of hurting oneself or someone else + + Experiencing symptoms that do not subside after two weeks past delivery

A BOON AT BATH TIME My 1½-year-old son hated bath time. A friend suggested I try some bathtub toys, and I’m so glad I did. I recently tried Boon’s Marco Light Up Bath Toy and Boon’s Tones Musical Boats. Now I can’t get my son out of the tub. Not only do the Boon toys have a sleek and contemporary design, they’re also BPA-, PVC- and phthalate-free and are so easy to clean. The Tones Musical Bath Boats have holes in the bottom that allow them to easily air-dry after use. Once you drop the boats in the tub, they float with ease, and your little one will have a blast tapping the top of each boat, which makes a whistling sound. The Marco Light Up Bath Toy is a tiny deepsea diver whose water-activated color-changing light will delight your child as they splash in the bubbles together. The light turns off when you remove Marco from the water. These sweet toys will leave your child all aboard for bath time. Both $17.99, Booninc.com.

BINXYBABY For mothers of newborn babies, a trip to the local supermarket can seem like a vacation to Hawaii after being cooped up in the house for weeks. However, the logistics of taking an infant to store can often be more trouble than it’s worth. And by the time you lug a giant baby car seat into a shopping cart, there is no room left to put groceries in the cart. The Binxy Baby shopping cart hammock offers a solution to transporting a baby in a shopping cart without a car seat or stroller. The cart hammock works by snapping onto the sides of a shopping cart to create a secure hammock for baby to rest safely while you shop. There is even an option to place a baby carrier in the hammock, but placing baby directly into the hammock is an even better solution. $49.95, Binxybaby.com 2016 ~ 2017 • BABY & MATERNITY GUIDE

LIFE AFTER BABY: Going back to work BY MELISSA L. TICHAUER One of the most significant moments in a woman’s life is when she becomes a mother. And with that bundle of joy comes myriad changes, from endless loads of laundry to learning how to function on less than two hours of sleep. But there’s one subject that many baby books don’t cover: making the difficult decision to go back to work after having a child. When thinking about re-entering the workforce, there are many things to consider: Who will take care of my newborn? Will my employer let me work from home? What will it cost to put my child in daycare? Can I afford to stay home? Many expectant mothers spend their entire pregnancies working with the intention of returning after their maternity leave is over. But there are many variables to think about before making the final determination. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website, the labor force participation rate of women with children under 6 in 2014 was 64.2 percent. That rate jumped to 74.7 percent for women with children ages 6-17. When compared with previous decades, both statistics boast a significant increase of mothers in the workplace. But is that best for families with young children? Many new mothers are likely to be judged whether they return to work or not. But there isn’t a right or a wrong answer. Resources and benefits vary from state to state and employer to employer, making this personal decision even more of a challenge. In 2015, a study conducted by WalletHub ranked Florida below average in best states for working moms. The study was based on 12 metrics in the categories of child care, professional opportunities and work-life balance. The Sunshine State ranked 30th overall. “Most employers in Florida follow the federal law, which is FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) and only allows 12 weeks of unpaid leave with job guarantee upon return,” said Krissy Mulder, a human

SOUTH FLORIDA PARENTING •

resources manager at TSF Sportswear. “Anything outside of the general norm as far as benefits is up to the individual employer.” Mulder notes that some jobs offer shortterm disability, but often that pays 60 percent of a worker’s salary, leaving a gap in people’s monthly household income. There are laws to protect breastfeeding moms who return to work. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act amended section 7 of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) to require employers to provide reasonable break time for an employee to express breast milk for her nursing child for one year after the child’s
birth each time the employee has need to express the milk. Employers are also required to provide a place for that mother to express, other than a bathroom, that is shielded from view and free from intrusion. The break time requirement became effective when the Affordable Care Act was signed in 2010. “Corporations are trying to promote a healthy work-life balance within the confines of their business, but new moms are still expected to adhere to the same policies as their co-workers,” Mulder said. “We’re eager to have new moms back after the 12-week leave of absence. Many women continue to have fulfilling careers

after having children. As employers, we want to help them achieve that goal.” When Dawn Hassell had her daughter six years ago, she was working in her field as a full-time graphic artist. Unfortunately for Hassell, she was the only artist on staff in her company. Shortly after giving birth, the new mom found herself working parttime during her three-month maternity leave. “I felt conflicted from every angle; like I wasn’t being fair to my company, my baby or myself,” Hassell said. “I almost felt guilty for having a child. But for financial reasons, it wasn’t an option not to work.” Besides the financial burden, Hassell also felt like she had to do it all between working and caring for her infant. And while family stepped in to help, the pressure she put on herself made the circumstances more challenging. “I had time to bond with my daughter, but she was only 3 months old when I returned to work, and I would’ve loved more time with her,” said the Hollywood resident. “I felt I was missing out on things she was doing when I wasn’t there. It’s more beneficial for the child when their mother is around the first year. I’d advise new moms to prepare to make the really difficult decisions long before you have your baby.”
For Lauren Salus of Sunrise, the need to supplement her household income was also the deciding factor in her decision to return to work when her first child was 9 months old. “It was a very hard and emotional time,” said Salus, who consulted with her husband when making her decision. “We needed more than one income could provide, and we thought I could stay out of work longer, but that wasn’t the case, unfortunately.” According to Salus, who worked in an ophthalmologist’s office before having her son, there were countless pros and cons associated with going back to work. A few of the plusses included having adult interaction, making a financial contribution to her family and getting a break from the rigors of caring for an infant. “Just being able to have an adult conversation was huge,” Salus said. “But in the end, I felt guilty about being away from my child.” While the respite was often enjoyable, it wasn’t as important to her as being there for her child. “Besides missing my child, I was taking a lot of time off for school closures and sick days,” she said. “It became very challenging and caused me never-ending stress. Being a mom is my most important
and rewarding job.” Salus returned to being a stay-at-home mom shortly after her son turned 2, allowing her to be with her toddler full-time. After she stopped working, she decided to expand her family and is now mom to two. Salus said if she’d had a more established career path, she would’ve been more inclined to continue working after having her kids. But the decision to stay home with her children is what has worked best for her and her family. The best rule of thumb when thinking about going back to work as a new mom is to plan ahead and allow enough time to make important decisions about family and finances. Talk with a spouse, extended family, other moms and your employer to know your options and have contingency plans in case of unexpected changes. The more information an expectant mom can gather, the more prepared she’ll be for motherhood and the life-changing moments that come with it.
BREASTFEEDING, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9
Dibosco is a firm believer in the science of a mother’s body and the baby’s needs. “I really like the mothers to know that their babies know how to do it,” she said. “I balance between doing something and doing nothing.” Dibosco’s own challenges have contributed to her expertise. “Seventeen years ago, I was breastfeeding my own set of twins after a cesarean delivery. For the first time, I really understood what it meant to have challenges breastfeeding. “I had sailed through the first three children with no problems at all,” she said. “Along came my twins, and I was faced with trying to make breastfeeding work while in pain from surgery and dealing with a delay in milk supply. I was an experienced breastfeeding mother and a lactation consultant. I had helped many mothers and babies, but having my own struggles made me more aware of what a mother feels when she is trying to breastfeed her baby. “It took me weeks of hard work and determination to provide for my babies, and it was definitely not easy to breastfeed after a cesarean birth, but I had wonderful lactation consultants in my corner helping me when I ran out of ideas to help myself. “In most cases, ‘Been there, done that’
really is not necessary to be very good at what you do,” she said, “but sometimes, when you have walked that path and know that it is not always easy, it gives you a deeper understanding of another woman’s struggles. “These were not my first babies. I knew far more than many new mothers know going into breastfeeding for the first time. If knowing as much as I did, and being as experienced as I was, yet I still had complications and challenges, then anyone can. I joke often that if those babies came first, and I did not have the support I had, I seriously doubt I would have been able to be successful, because I would have doubted my ability to breastfeed. I am always in awe of women who, when faced with challenges, work to breastfeed their babies. It is not always easy.” As a certified lactation consultant, Dibosco also has experience as a professional labor assistant, supporting women through water births, cesarean births, twin births and vaginal births after a cesarean.
THERE ARE SIGNS A MOTHER CAN LOOK FOR TO DETERMINE IF SHE NEEDS HELP, DIBOSCO SAID: > If the baby is not breastfeeding at least 8 to 10 times a day and resting comfortably between feedings, there might be a problem. > The baby should have at least six wet diapers and three or more stooled diapers every day after day four after birth. > A mother’s breast should feel soft after feeding, and breastfeeding should be comfortable for both mother and baby. Pain indicates the baby is not latching on properly, and latching on properly means the baby receives more milk easily. It is important that mothers do not wait to get help. The earlier a mother gets help, the better for herself and her child, Dibosco said. She focuses on the individual needs of each mother. “I really believe that every situation is different. What works with one mother may not work with another,” she said. “My goal is to remove any maternal guilt or pressure a mother may be facing.”

and birth as a normal process rather than a medical event. Our philosophy is to provide personalized, supportive care that allows each mother to trust in her body’s ability to give birth while providing the information she needs to make informed choices for mom and her baby.*
ABOUT HOSPITAL CHARTS, LEFT AND TOP OF PAGE • The charges listed do not represent fees for obstetrician, pediatrician, lab tests, anesthesiologist and any other specialist required at birth. These are average charges, regardless of complications, and do not necessarily represent the amount you or your insurance company would pay. Be sure to discuss charges with your hospital. • The C-section rate represents the number of cesarean deliveries divided by the total number of deliveries. The same formula is used by the state of Florida to determine overall c-section rates. • Neonatal intensive care unit ratings (NICU) are determined by the level of specialization and facilities. Level 3 is the most advanced. • Most hospitals accept registered nurse midwives who are affiliated with a physician group and certified to deliver in that hospital. Check with your midwife and the hospital for details and information. • Most hospitals have a neonatologist on premise 24 hours a day. A few have the neonatologist on-call for emergencies. Check with your hospital. * Figures from last year's Baby and Maternity Guide ** Figures from FloridaHealthFinder.gov • NA indicates that figures were not available or not provided to South Florida Parenting.
