he slogan of Downtown Boca is “It’s all happening,” and the motto couldn’t sum up the evolution in the area more perfectly. Downtown Boca encompasses six sections of East Boca Raton, including the Mizner Park Quarter, Sanborn Square Quarter, Plaza Real South Quarter, Palmetto Park East
Quarter, City Hall Quarter and Camino Real Quarter. “Downtown Boca is not a street. We’re a community,” says Bonnie Kaye, whose firm, Kaye Communications, Inc., has headed up the branding of Downtown Boca. “There are a lot of great dining, night life and shopping places in this area. We want Downtown Boca to be known as a destination location like Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach and Las Olas in Fort Lauderdale.” From arts and culture to spas and fitness to shopping, music and entertainment, Downtown Boca has a myriad of sophisticating spots to uncover. But the dining in Downtown Boca is in a league all its own, with dozens of new restaurants to explore. “Downtown Boca is really like the United Nations of restaurants,” Kaye says. “Whatever food you’re craving, you can find it here.” Visit Downtownboca.org for details on all the buzz that’s generating on this revamped South Florida hotspot.

There’s something eccentrically charming about museum gift shops, but the one located in Boca Raton Museum of Art is in a quirky, fabulous class all its own. From Keith Haring baby bibs and Leonardo DaVinci and Andy Warhol dolls to art-inspired jewelry and scarves, the museum store is a hidden gem for unique gifts and fun, functional items with an edge. Laura Toia, museum store buyer and manager, is constantly on the hunt for new and unusual items to stock in the store. One of the most popular items is a realistic ceramic version of the iconic New York to-go coffee cup. At just under $13, it’s an affordable and fashionable, ecofriendly way to enjoy your java. “We are a playful, open museum,” says Boca Raton Museum of Art Director Steven Maklansky. “We want you to shop here and enjoy. The museum shop is very much a part of the whole museum experience. You come to the museum and expect to find well-designed products and that’s exactly what we have here.” In addition to Frida Kahlo sticker books and, of course, art books, the store also carries educational toys for children. “Our toys tend to be more sturdy and creative than what you would find elsewhere,” Maklansky said. The Boca Raton Museum of Art’s store is located at 501 Plaza Real, Boca Raton in Mizner Park. Call 561-392-2500 or visit Bocamuseum.org.

Mizner Park in downtown Boca is synonymous with beauty, luxury and all things posh. D. Stern Jewelry is a perfect compliment to that atmosphere. “This originally started as a very high-end place,” says owner Shaheer Hosh. “I do most of the custom designing here. Now we offer pieces that from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.” Originally from Egypt but living in Florida since 1995, Hosh has done custom pieces for professional sports players as well as local socialites. Bellarri, Garavelli and Chad Allison are a few of the many brands he carries in his store. “The hot trend for spring is black
colored metals and diamonds for men and women,” says Hosh, who was also commissioned to design the official charm for Downtown Boca’s “Meet Me On The Promenade.” “Some of our hottest items are our silver bracelets priced at $135. They’re beautiful and very European looking.” From beaded bracelets adorned with skull images to stingray skin and hammered silver rings, Hosh has something for everyone whether they’re single, getting engaged or celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary. D. Stern Jewelers is located at 421 South Plaza Real in Boca Raton. Call 561-210-5222 or visit Dsternjewelers.com.

Fashion Indi-Chic boutique is the local answer to worldwide fashion trends By Joanie Cox Being a lifelong, self-professed shopaholic, I thought I had seen it all when it comes to clothing and accessories, but Indi-Chic in Royal Palm Place not only caught my eye, it made me fall in love with bohemian couture all over again. Racks of silky, tailored button-down blouses in taupe and floral prints fill the store alongside crocheted skirts, beaded tribal purses from Thailand, slinky underwear and floor-length laser cut black T-shirt dresses. “Indie stands for individual,” says Michelle Jaffe, who opened the boutique with her husband Dan Jaffe and friends Michelle and Steve Lazarski. “We make our shoes, bags and belts ourselves.” With feather necklaces, strappy leather bracelets and cool leather clutches, the vibe of the store bohemian meets urban California chic. You’ll find a plethora of items such as Gottex laser cut bikinis ($120) and silk chiffon embroidered Indian peasant tops ($265). Jaffe can often be found helping customers inside the shop along with her daughter Lisa Jaffe, who also shares a passion for great fashion. “We offer everything here from basic T-shirts, linen pants and microfiber travel pants to French lace blouses.”
There are some beauty products available in the store as well, such as Santa Maria Novella, a line of sweet-smelling perfumes and bath products made by monks in Florence, Italy since the 1300s. They sell a $60 Terracota Pomegranate fragrance diffuser that’s an enchanting alternative to a candle. Jaffe is also planning to open additional locations in New York, Santa Monica, and possibly Atlanta. “Each store location has to be unique to the people walking through,” she adds. “Our location in Boca is modeled after a Soho, New York loft.” While Indi-Chic opened just before Thanksgiving, their Boca Raton store is quickly catching the eye of style-savvy locals and travelers alike looking for unique pieces you’d never find at the mall. “Our prints are really special and different,” Jaffe says. “We were originally in manufacturing and decided to start our own lifestyle brand. Indi-Chic is all about putting your look together with your own personality. I think it goes way beyond a store. It’s about relationships.” Indi-Chic is located at 348 Esplanade, Suite 56A. 561-245-7487 or visit Indichicboca.com.

Entertainment IPic gets ready to open new movie theater in Mizner Park prime reel estate: Hamid Hashemi, President and CEO of iPic Entertainment, discusses his new luxury movie theaters at a press conference in Mizner Park. Mark Randall
By Marci Shatzman IPic Theaters cleared the last construction approval before City Council, and now they’re shooting for an early summer opening, bringing a movie house back to Mizner Park after more than a year. The building is being gutted, with a dramatic entrance and a restaurant with outdoor seating. The inside is designed to look like a luxury hotel lobby, said president and CEO Hamid Hashemi. Hashemi was a founder of Muvico, now called Cinemark Palace 20 in the city. His new company has eight theaters nationwide and three more under construction, including an iPic in Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach opening in December. The corporate office is now in Mizner Park, he said. The Mizner Park location will have eight screens with a total of 480 seats, versus the old 1,900-seat theater. Each seat will be assigned when the customer buys a ticket, “so you don’t have to rush to get a good seat,” he said. Premium seats will offer food and beverage service at the seat before the show, a leather recliner, and a pillow and blanket. Tanzy, a bar and casual dining restaurant operated independently, will have an express counter that includes movie food such as
sliders and flat bread pizzas that can be eaten as customers watch the show. Popcorn is free with the higher priced seats, he said. Plans for a lounge called Salt will be announced later. Ticket prices have not been set for this market, he said, but his other theaters charge $12 to $17 or $17 to $25. Some 90 percent of iPic customers buy their tickets online, he said. The company will give a free movie ticket to customers who join their free membership club before the Mizner Park opening, he said.

Design Scoring the right decor: Venus Williams courts interior couture at One Thousand Ocean
out of this world: Venus Williams and her design firm, V*Starr, definitely aced the look of seaside luxury with these delightful digs at One Thousand Ocean in Boca Raton. submitted photos
By Joanie Cox
Boca Piquant City Edition
14
Venus Williams is a champion on the tennis court and a fastgrowing force in the design world. The ambitious athlete launched V*Starr in 2002. Her commercial and residential design firm has been the brainchild behind the set of “The Tavis Smiley Show,” and decorating the homes of Baltimore Raven Bryant McKennie and major league pitcher Brad Penny. Her latest endeavor brought the Palm Beach resident to One Thousand Ocean in Boca Raton. With Williams at the helm, she and her company V*Starr oversaw the furnishing of a breath taking four-bedroom, four and one-half-bath model at One Thousand Ocean. Encompassing 4,971-square-feet under air with an additional 1,289-square-feet, the residence, which boasts 100-foot ceilings and is surrounded on three sides by water, was a welcome challenge for Williams. “Being surrounded by water was a plus. You can’t beat being by the water and the feel of that,” Williams said at a press conference inside the unit earlier this month. “I think the décor definitely brings the outside into the house. It’s very welcoming and has the feel of an ocean front house, which is what you’re supposed to feel like. It’s relaxing and cheerful. I feel like everything has been achieved here. “
The spacious four-bedroom residence offers a state-of-the-art kitchen that would impress Rachael Ray, plenty of closet space for all your Louboutins and an outdoor kitchen complete with a jetted plunge pool. “We worked with an unbelievable base. The finishes here are incredible, from the flooring to the counter tops to cabinetry and built-ins. Nothing was spared,” Williams said. “When you have a great base you can’t go wrong. Bringing the blues from the ocean inside was important. We wanted to bring a feeling of relaxation, warmth and serenity inside. The buyer here is very sophisticated and they know what they want.” While Williams is also relaunching her clothing line EleVen this spring on Elevenbyvenus.com, the fashionista admits her approach to interior and fashion design is similar. “My style is kind of eclectic and I don’t like to do the same thing over and over again. I like to have fun and explore myself so you won’t see the same design,” Williams explained. “In some ways it is very much like my fashion design. The principle of the design—the harmony, rhythm and balance, are all the same with interior and fashion design.” For more information on One Thousand Ocean, call 561-869-5000 or visit Onethousandocean.com. Check out Vstarrinteriors.com for details on Williams’ company.
Dining Dennis Max remarks on Mizner Park location By Joanie cox It opened Jan. 7, 1991 in Mizner Park – the new, swanky spot in Boca. Not much has changed, except Max’s Grille is more popular than ever. “I was one of the first to come to Mizner,” says Dennis Max, owner of Max’s Grille. “When I saw the plans for Mizner Park, I fell in love with it immediately. I had moved to Boca in 1985 and definitely already knew the area. I picked my spot in Mizner quickly knew I wanted valet parking. I thought it was the perfect spot for a grand cafe.” Twenty-one years later, Max is still in awe of seeing multiple generations of his customers coming in. “It’s very unusual to have a run like this in the restaurant business,” Max says. “My greatest memory of Max’s Grille is the good fortune to be in Mizner for 21 years and see the renaissance of downtown Boca – to see people supporting the vision I have. You see politicians, firefighters, and the pregnant women – the
pulse of the community coming and going. It’s great to be a part of that.” Max also mentions he gets a kick out of serving customers who used to come in when they were children and now have their own spouses and families. “We’re always reading and traveling and coming up with new items,” Max adds. “Then we test it out with our culinary team. It’s a process. Before we put anything on the menu, we really try it out. One of the reasons for success is we really take our time creating menu items people will truly enjoy.” One of the most enjoyed menu items at Max’s Grille is the Radiatore pasta. “The inspiration came from new American cuisine,” Max says of the goat cheese, chicken and pasta dish. “I tried to take it off the menu and people want to cause a riot so it’s here to stay.” And thankfully, so is Max’s Grille. Max’s Grille is located at 404 Plaza Real in Boca Raton. Call 561-368-0080 or visit Maxsgrille.com.

Say olé to The Spaniard Tapas Bar and Cafe By Joanie Cox
Boca Piquant City Edition
18
Adjacent to Royal Palm Place you’ll find a tucked away piece of Downtown Boca that’s fueled by tempting tapas, smooth sangria and the passionate Flamenco rhythm of Spain. The Spaniard Tapas Bar and Cafe opened Dec. 3 and has since been delighting customers with small plate meals from Spain in an inviting atmosphere that offers indoor and outdoor dining options. With a chef from Granada in the kitchen, six types of paella on the menu and an extensive background as a worldrenowned culinary master himself, Chef Jorge Fernandez, owner of The Spaniard Tapas Bar and Cafe, prides himself on giving his clientele authentic Spanish cuisine. “It’s hard to do tapas right. A lot of people in Boca are well-traveled. They know all about Spain and tapas already so half my job is done,” Fernandez says. “Every time you talk about tapas, your mouth is supposed to water.” To ensure the quality of his food, Fernandez brings in a lot of products from Spain and takes his paella very seriously. “Paella is like steak. It can be prepared many ways. You can order it dry or wet,” says Fernandez, who was born in Madrid and raised in Valencia, Spain. “We also have set tasting menus. We do a $40 menu and you can have a sampling of selected tapas.” Fernandez, who has worked as a chef in France, England, Germany, Slovenia and Barbados, says his English was once limited, but his hands never needed a translation to make his food speak a universal language of indulgence. “We play with the food. Tapas are very sexy,” says Fernandez, whose whimsical mustache and eccentric approach to cooking has earned him the nickname “Dalí of the Kitchen.” “It’s about sitting with family and friends and really enjoying and talking about life. The tapas are meant to be an explosion of tastes. I think it’s important that you’re eating tapas with someone you really like. Then you develop a union with the food.” Vegetable tapas have become very popular menu items. The Tartaleta de Vegetales con Tomate Picante de Rocoto y Queso Manchego, which is a grilled veggie cake with Manchego cheese doused in a spicy tomato sauce ($8.75) is hard to resist. You’ll also find plenty of meat, chicken and seafood tapas including the succulent Solomillo de Vaca con Setas al Vino Tinto, which is tender filet mignon smothered in mushrooms and wine sauce ($11). “The whole thing is about sharing and tasting,” Fernandez says. “Everything has a story. The wine I’m serving you, the ingredients in my food, the music we’re playing--it all has a story. There isn’t really a secret to how my tapas are made. How you enjoy them and discover your own part of the story is all up to you.” The Spaniard Tapas Bar and Cafe is located at 99 S.E. Mizner Blvd., in Boca Raton. Holloway’s Irish Pub gets to the pint of it all
By Joanie Cox
Boca Piquant City Edition
20
Holloway’s Irish Pub will celebrate its 10th anniversary in June and the local neighborhood watering hole has such a loyal clientele, some of the regulars have their names on plaques on the backs of their barstools. “Most of the pubs around here cater to a college crowd. I wanted to build a pub where everyone could come and drink,” says owner Mike Holloway. Decorated with vintage Guinness posters from Ireland and Marlins memorabilia Holloway collected when he was baseball mascot Billy The Marlin Sr. for five years, the quaint pub is truly a place “where everybody knows your name.” With 10 beers on tap and plans to add five more in the upcoming months, Holloway’s is in a mode of expansion. A second location of the pub is set to open in the Wharside Shopping Village on Southwest 10th Street in Boca Raton in June. “This whole project to open our first location began as a labor of love with my wife Bertha,” Holloway recalls. “Bertha was working in accounting and I spent 11 years in Alaska as an executive chef developing menus for all the airlines. Opening a pub was always a dream of mine. I even had a ‘Holloway’s Pub’ sign made at an Irish festival several years before we even opened.”
With a background in cuisine, Holloway, who is originally from California, was deeply focused on developing a solid menu for his pub. “The food is very important to me,” says Holloway. “We offer Irish beef stew, shepherd’s pie, salmon patties made from fresh salmon and fish and chips. We also have bar standards like our wings. And we have the best wings because they’re marinated and roasted. I have a guy who comes from Buffalo to order these wings and we also do prime rib dinners weekly.” To wash those tasty treats down, Holloway has also developed a specialty drink list with a shot he’s deemed the “Holloway Bomb.” It’s a shot consisting of Jägermeister, Baileys Irish Cream and Coca-Cola. “It tastes like ice cream,” Holloway adds. In addition to a pool table and dartboards, Holloway’s Irish Pub patrons can also partake in Karaoke and daily drink specials. “We do $3 shot specials all the time,” Holloway says. “And we have happy hour 4-7 p.m. Monday through Friday with two-for-one well drinks and $1 off anything but wine. We also do $9 pitchers and we serve our Guinness in a 20-ounce pint. There’s really an art to pouring Guinness.” Holloway’s Irish Pub is located at 504 Via De Palmas, No. 77 in Boca Raton. Call 561-361-8445 or visit Hollowaysirishpub.com.

Say Bonjour to French fare in Royal Palm Place

In the middle of Royal Palm Place, lies a French eatery that will have you wondering if you’ve been transported to Paris. Casimir Bistro is a decadent escape to France with its standard French offerings such as escargot, Moules Marinière and French fries and gourmet lunch and dinner specials. “I opened this restaurant with my wife Doris and we did a lot of improvements,” says owner Laurent Di Meglio who formerly had a restaurant in Jupiter, Fla. “The decor is really like an authentic French bistro and our chef is from France.” Images of the Moulin Rouge as well as antique art posters from France adorn the walls of this bistro. “Every item on our menu has become a best seller,” says Di Meglio, who hails from Marseille. “Our duck and mussels are unbelievable and our French onion soup is the best in the world. We sell so much French onion soup. Basically someone at every table orders it.” To ensure quality in all his dishes, Di Meglio starts with the finest French ingredients. However, the menu remains affordable with soups ranging from $3.50 to $7, salads averaging $8 to $16.50 and entrées ranging from $14 to $19.50. Casimir Bistro also offers an impressive wine list with selections from France, New Zealand, Italy and South
America. “We’re using the real French techniques to cook each item to perfection,” Di Meglio adds. “The atmosphere of our restaurant is also more eclectic than a classic French restaurant. We’ll throw in Italian specials, too. While we are very French, at times we can be considered world cuisine. We like serving up dishes people love.” One of the specials is a three-course meal priced at $28.50 per person. The deal includes an appetizer, an entrée and one of the restaurant’s divine desserts, such as the uberpopular crème brulee, flour-less chocolate cake or Tarte Tatin, a flipped over version of a fruit tart. “We also have specials that are more sophisticated than what’s on the menu. This is for the real foodies,” Di Meglio explains. “We have fish, meat and soup specials and we also do the specials for our repeat customers who want to enjoy new foods.” Di Meglio, who is expecting a baby boy with his wife Doris, gets a kick out of getting to know his customers. “People come in and ask for me or my wife,” Di Meglio says. “We know our customers really well. It’s like a big family here.” Casimir Bistro is located at 416 Via De Palmas, No. 81 in Boca Raton. Call 561-955-6001 or visit Facebook.com/ CasimirFrenchBistro.

Say bye to frying at the fit and fabulous Saquella Cafe By Joanie Cox
Boca Piquant City Edition
24
When Avi Sekerel opened Saquella Café seven years ago at Royal Palm Place, there was little action in the now booming plaza. “I used to joke that there were tumbleweeds rolling by,” Sekerel laughs. He stuck to his vision of providing his customers with fresh homemade food without preservatives or frying. And when you walk by his cafe, you can see his hard work paid off. “We’re opening another store in Aventura and we already have one in Palm Beach Gardens. Eventually, we will change all our names to Prosecco Cafe because we have evolved so much,” Sekerel says. “I originally opened this cafe because there was no place to have a good cup of coffee. We lead the quality of cappuccinos in the area.” Sekerel attributes the success of his coffee, pastry and food business to letting the ingredients, not additives, dominate the taste of his creations. “There are too many chemicals and preservatives in many foods,” Sekerel stresses.“We care about quality and taste. We are a true European bakery. We don’t add a lot of sugar to our pastries. If we do a plum tart, we want the sweetness to come from plums. In America, it’s easy to put a lot of sugar in everything because that’s what we’re used to here. We have a European approach to our food and it starts with fine, quality ingredients.” While Saquella Cafe originated as a coffee and sandwich shop, it now includes wine and beer and a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu along with a full bakery and coffee bar. Omelets, Belgian waffles, goat cheese baguettes, antipasti and citrus grilled chicken salad are among the many menu items. “We evolved because people wanted more,” Sekerel says. “We have different customers throughout the day. From 7 to 9 a.m., it’s typically grab-and-go customers who want coffee and a pastry. Then, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. is typically our lunch crowd. From 5 to 8 p.m., we usually do an early bird dinner and 8 p.m.-midnight is a dinner and dessert crowd.” While healthy salads and sandwiches are a big part of the menu, Saquella does sweets like a true Italian bakery. “We’re a scratch kitchen. Everything we do is from scratch. We bake our own breads and our gelato is made locally from skim milk, not whole milk by an authentic Italian company,” Sekerel says. “We have this wonderful pick-me-up in the afternoon called ‘affogato.’ It’s a scoop of gelato with two shots of espresso on top. I always say, ‘Try us once and you’ll be hooked for life.’” Sekerel, who is from Israel, has always been passionate about Italian coffee and cuisine and has spent years studying recipes and ingredients. “I’m a chocolatier, a sommelier and a chef by trade,” Sekerel says. “Everything I do, I do the best I can. We are so much more than a bakery now.” Saquella Cafe is located at 410 Via Palmas in Boca Raton. Call 561-338-8840 or visit Saquellacafe.com.

Mamma Mia, Tucci’s Pizza delivers big on taste
the pie guy: Alberto “Albertucci,” owner of Tucci’s Fire N Coal Pizza, stands in his restaurant. Lindsay moore

There’s pizza and then there’s Tucci’s Fire N Coal Pizza. I haven’t had pizza like Tucci’s pizza since I was in Rome. The feel of this charming pizza shop is contemporary and as inviting as the food they serve. They don’t serve pizza by the slice, but it’s for a good reason. “We use good quality meats and homemade meatballs,” says owner Albertucci, who’s becoming so well-known locally, he only goes by one name. “Every pie is made fresh to order. We never want pizza sitting around so we don’t offer it by the slice.” Tucci’s authentic Margherita pizza, which is made with buffalo mozzarella, basil and tomato sauce, is one of the most popular pizzas on the menu. The meatball and ricotta pie is another big seller. “We also do multi-grain pizza and offer cold and hot salads as well as wings and a nice craft beer and wine menu,” Albertucci adds. “Our buffalo mozzarella and Kalamata olives are imported from Italy.” In keeping with the family atmosphere of the restaurant, the staff at Tucci’s is friendly and goes out of its way to
make sure guests are enjoying their meals. “We accommodate everyone here. It’s about coming in and relaxing,” says Michael Asseo, an employee at Tucci’s Fire N Coal Pizza. Matthew Desorcy, another worker at Tucci’s Fire N Coal Pizza, can often be found behind the counter smiling and whipping up delicious pizza pies. “I worked in the family jewelry business a while,” says Albertucci who grew up in Boca Raton. “Then I stepped away from that about four years ago and decided to open my pizza place. The concept was already here as a pizza place. We just tweaked it a bit.” While he has no plans to open another pizzeria, Albertucci is going to open another restaurant in Boca sometime soon. “We’re not your typical Coke and slice place,” Albertucci emphasizes. “We like to have fun here. I plug in my iPod or turn Pandora on so we have a great atmosphere going. It’s a vibrant experience with good pizza.” Tucci’s Fire N Coal Pizza is located at 50 N.E. First Ave., in Boca Raton. Diners get royal treatment at Fusionarie
Sake to me: Owner Edison Song waits by his sake bar to greet customers and provide them with impeccable food and service. Eric Bojanowski

When you walk into Japanese restaurant Fusionarie, the soothing, Zen-like atmosphere takes over. Regardless of the chaotic day you may have just survived, you can kick back with a cup of rare sake and some savory sushi rolls. “My goal was to create a relaxed atmosphere. We always have smooth jazz playing in the background,” says Fusionarie owner Edison Song. “We opened Nov. 28 and there’s nothing I love more than seeing repeat customers and talking to them about their day. I want people to come in, drink, talk and have fun.” The 30-year-old restaurateur, who graduated in the top 14 of his class at Indiana University, enjoys cooking and making people smile. “I opened my first restaurant in Indianapolis at age 27,” Song says. “It was a sushi, burgers and beer concept. Then I wanted to open a different kind of restaurant in Boca.” Born in China, but raised in Japan, Song is deeply committed to bringing his clientele the freshest sushi possible. “A third of my sushi comes directly from Japan. I’m really proud of that,” Song says. “I try to avoid using warm water fish. I mainly use cold water because there’s less bacteria.”
Song also uses organic vegetables in his cuisine and grows his own ginger. “The Kiss of Fire is our signature roll,” he says. “We set it on fire and serve it to the customers. It’s one of our most popular items along with the tuna pizza, Snow Crab Hand Roll and Hidden Dragon Roll.” Song is also proud of his homemade sushi and teriyaki sauces. “The sauce recipes were created by a master chef in Japan who is the head chef for the Japanese royal family,” he says. “My customers get to eat the same sauce.” While he prides himself on reasonable prices and a stellar happy hour 5-7 p.m. every day, which includes half-price drinks and appetizers, he’s also dedicated to keeping himself rooted in tradition. “My grandma created the recipe for the tonkatsu, which is a fried pork tenderloin,” Song says. “We also have a very extensive hot and cold sake bar and a great wine list. Offering my customers great drinks and incredible value is extremely important to me.” Fusionarie is located at 500 Via De Palmas, Suite 79 in Boca Raton’s Royal Palm Place. Call 561-367-3283 or visit Facebook.com/fusionarie.

Biergarten has more than 50 reasons to cheer for beer
stein smart: Missy Kaufman, bartender, Ditmar Lorenz, manager, and Siobhan Terhune, hostess, hold up been in the outside bar of Biergarten. Lindsay Moore

Boca Piquant City Edition

When I first walked into Biergarten, I was instantly smitten by the smattering of cuckoo clocks on the walls, antler chandelier and whimsical vibe that’s part enchanted castle, part beer lodge. With 24 craft beers on tap, more than 25 types in bottles and a wine and cocktail list that could get a double take from even the most seasoned drinker, Biergarten is definitely a perfect reason to hit downtown Boca with 20 of your closest friends. Biergarten opened in September of 2011, and immediately included a draft beer and bottle list that globe “hops” with brews from around the world. “I’ve got everything from Asian and Belgian beers to Canadian and Australian brands. I carry the best of the best in German beers, but it’s not just a German beer bar,” says Biergarten’s General Manager Dustin Dykstra. Biergarten changes its beer taps seasonally. This month, Dykstra will rewrite the entire beer menu. “We’ll have pumpkin beers for about 45 days in the fall and then darker beers during Christmas. This month, we’ll be offering a menu with a lot of light, crisp beers with delicious profiles
for spring.” While Biergarten has beers no other bars are carrying, the bar also stocks a few well-known domestic beers. “I run a more eclectic line. I don’t want to be like everybody else,” Dykstra emphasizes. “I carry Hobgoblin instead of Bass. It’s a bitter, dark ale and there are certain things we don’t do. Miller Light will never be on tap here. Coors is never available. We don’t carry Blue Moon, but we do have Budweiser in bottles and Bud Light on draft. We can offer you at least five beers that are what Blue Moon only wishes it could be.” In addition to a full liquor bar with a vast wine selection, there is live music Tuesday through Saturday and one Sunday a month. The menu of traditional German foods such as Bratwurst and Wiener schnitzel combined with burgers, salads, beer cheese fondue and Black Forest ham and cheese is a delightful accompaniment to the vast beer selection. “Designing the menu was a team process. We offer German foods – some with an American twist,” says Biergarten’s Chef Ron Weisheit. “Our hanging pretzel really took off. It’s served with three types of mustard. When one of these comes out of the kitchen, we typically sell three more after people see it.”
a boot and a bite: Left, The Wiener Schnitzel entree served with braised cabbage, herbed späetzle and a side of jäger sauce along with the “Pretzel” served with house made mustards and a liptauer käse dip. Below, Apple Strudel. Lindsay moore
For those with a hankering for sweets, Biergarten serves German classics such as apple strudel, Black Forest cupcakes and they’re working on a beer ice cream. “The kitchen is constantly evolving,” Weisheit says. With happy hour 4-7 p.m. Monday-Friday including $3 draught beers, $5 specialty cocktails and select $6 wines, Biergarten is a cool, new place to grab a pretzel, a pint and some affordable, tasty fun. For the truly hard-core beer chuggers, you can enlist in Biergarten’s boot camp and purchase a glass beer boot to drink discounted draught brewskis. Sizes range from one to three liters and make a fantastic gift idea for any beer enthusiast. Cinderella may have found the glass slipper but the glass boot is much better suited for modern day fairy tales, especially when it leads you to Newcastle or somewhere across the earth on a beer journey you’ve never taken. Biergarten is located at 309 Via De Palmas No. 90 in Boca Raton. Call 561-395-7462 or visit Biergartenboca.com.
