I

t’s hard to believe it’s already been two years since we did the premiere issue of Boca Piquant on this spectacular club. I was the brand-new editor of the publication at the time and I have to admit, a little intimidated about delving into club writing. The management and staff at Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club immediately welcomed me and made me realize why life at Boca Grove is so cherished. There have been so many impressive changes at the club from the addition of Chef Dominick Laudia to the completely revamped Jim Fazio-designed golf course. While amenities are continually improving, the heart of Boca Grove remains the same—a community thriving with wonderful members and a deeply devoted staff. I invite you to explore this serene club and discover why it’s the shining jewel in the crown of country club living.

Profiles Boca Grove’s GM Chuck Lehner continues to lead his club in the right direction managing greatness: Chuck Lehner continues to ensure Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club is exceeding expectations. eric bojanowski

By Joanie Cox-Henry

Boca Piquant

8

Chuck Lehner is in a league all his own when it comes to managing a country club. At the helm of Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club for more than a decade, the Long Island native knows how to run a quality organization and keep his members excited about every amenity. But part of what Lehner is most proud of is his team. His newest additions to his all-star staff include award-winning Executive Chef Dominick Laudia and Golf champion Chad Kurmel. “I continue to look for the best people I can. You’ve got to continue to attract good people like Chef Dominick and our new golf pro Chad,” Lehner said. “There’s a lot of pride in our golf program. Personality-wise, Chad is a lot like Dominick. He’s interested in making our members happy. You’ve got to give your staff direction, but let them do their jobs. I consider every member of our staff to be exceeding expectations.” The history between Laudia and Lehner is both inspiring and unique. “Dominick first came to work for me when he was 16,” Lehner said. “I was the chef at a seafood restaurant in New York and he came to work in the pantry. He always had an incredible work ethic. Dominick worked so hard to get to where he is now. He’s an amazing guy.” Part of what makes Laudia so invaluable to Boca Grove is his food presentation. “With Dominick, it’s a whole new variety,” Lehner said. “Chef Jackson was here for 12 seasons and he was an excellent chef. Chef Dominick has a different style and he’s a perfectionist. It doesn’t matter whether he’s serving cheeseburgers or a gourmet dinner. Everything on that plate has to be the best product he can put out. He doesn’t get bored. He takes pride in every plate and that’s important with the membership. The club

is part of each members’ home.” While enhancing the dining experience at Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club has been achieved, the golf program is also flourishing under Lehner’s well-planned guidance. “The new course is much more challenging. We added some significant length to it and the Fazio name,” Lehner explained. “There was not a hole or green complex he hasn’t improved. Every hole is better than what existed before. With the golf course, there’s only been positive comments. Our members love to play it.” A closer look at the landscaping on the club’s grounds is another new highlight for Lehner. “We redid the golf course and we’ve done a lot of relandscaping to the community. We’ve upgraded all the roads, the signage. We worked on the street appeal,” Lehner said. “When you go to Disney and look at the perfection, every flower in the bed is alive and perfect. It’s a difficult standard to get let alone maintain but we’re working on the same standard here at Boca Grove. In the community, the gateway is really important and we’ve taken a natural approach too. There’s not a lot of hardscape out there – fountains or waterfalls or all the man-made stuff. We have natural lakes and plantings.” Although many people in the 45 to 55 year old age range are attracted to the family atmosphere of Boca Grove Golf and Tennis and are buying into the community, Boca Grove’s greatest commodity remains its exclusivity. “We’re more of a boutique club. Our size is very attractive. There’s not 3,000 people here waiting to play golf or get into the dining room,” Lehner said. “Members here can utilize the club and the facilities here are more than adequate to handle their demands. You don’t get turned away at the door of an event. We don’t have tee times. While we ask members to make reservations for certain events, they know in their hearts if they show up at the door, they won’t be turned away. There’s a lot of clubs in Boca, but there’s a difference at Boca Grove.”

We have a junior golf program and we offer golf for the children in the afternoon. When a club is as deeply committed to excellence as Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club is, you have to showcase an equally as impressive staff. Boca Grove’s Assistant General Manager Kathy Whitehurst is the epitome of club management. Working with Mr. Lehner for two decades in the country club industry and at Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club for the past 12 years, Whitehurst has a true knack for knowing what’s best for the club and inspiring the staff to reflect that vision. “It’s a really exciting time to be at Boca Grove. Within the last year we’ve made a lot of aesthetic improvements such as the roadways, paver walkway, basketball court and the shade cover over the playground,” Whitehurst said. “The playground area is right next to the pool area and it makes a great environment for families. The drive through the community is just absolutely beautiful.” Last year, Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club introduced a Jim Fazio redesign on the golf course and the clubhouse was renovated in 2008. “Our amenities are really up to date and we take great care in maintaining all the facilities,” Whitehurst said. “Attention to detail is essential for us.” The addition of the new chef has also been a welcome transition for Whitehurst and the members. “Chef Dominick has been just wonderful for the club. Our membership has welcomed him with open arms,” Whitehurst said. “We have always had excellent food and people have always enjoyed dining at Boca Grove but he has taken it to another level. He’s so creative and provides so many options for our members and their guests. It’s just fun.” But what’s especially fun about being part of Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club’s professional staff, according to Whitehurst, is consistently trying to provide something more than what the members anticipate. “It’s a challenge for us but that’s what keeps it fun,” Whitehurst explained. “We’re always trying to create something more than what the members expect from the dining experience and social events to golf, tennis and fitness. We’re always trying to change how we do it, how we present the food and entertainment so the members don’t feel like they’re always entering the same environment for their events.” To keep the variety in the club’s social events, sometimes events are hosted out on the street. “We have great block parties here. Sometimes we use the upper veranda or the lower veranda,” Whitehurst added. “We’re just constantly changing how we provide the amenities. Mr. Lehner is at the helm and he wants us to constantly be striving to be the best and provide the best. Dayna uses a personal touch. She makes sure every member feels personally invited to each event.” Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club has more of an intimate boutique feel, but that’s one of its strongest assets. “What’s very unique and special about this club is it’s a place where everybody knows your name. We make sure we deliver personal service here,” Whitehurst said. “ Our location is very special. We have members who have been here since we opened, dine here five nights a week, feel safe here and love it.” As Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club forges toward the future, the club remains a popular place for families. “We have about 150 children and we’re attracting more younger members,” Whitehurst said. “We’re

Profiles Dayna Grober, Social Director, gets the party started daily at Boca Grove By Joanie Cox-Henry Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club’s social calendar is packed with tons of fun activities, exciting parties and an array of events that leave members and their families with some truly cherished memories. The effervescent genius behind the fabulousness is party girl Dayna Grober. The former sixth-grade teacher has a knack for inspiring kids of all ages with the whimsical celebrations she helps plan with Boca Grove’s Social and Entertainment Committee. “Each season we always try to come up with fresh and exciting events for our members and their families,” Grober said. “Last season we did Grove Island, which was a spin-off of ‘Gilligan’s Island.’ This year, we also did the Jamaican Me Crazy party. We set up an authentic Jamaican market with hair braiders and had Jamaican coffees with rum, palm frond weavers, a fabulous band that played reggae and an eclectic mix of music. We went all out.” While Grober admits the biggest challenge is

Around the Club always coming up with something new to beat out the last event, she couldn’t be happier in her role at the club. “We always try to be creative in what we do,” she said. “The opening party theme this year was high rollers/casino night. We used a casino company who set up slots, craps, black jack and the members got fun money. We set up a Chinese auction at the end of the night and the members were able to cash in their money to win prizes. It was a lot of fun.” Holiday parties throughout the year are also outstanding events. “Every time school is out for Memorial Day or Labor Day, we have fabulous pool parties that include a jumbo slide, lifeguards faciliating pool games and our DJ providing great music and poolside games,” Grober mentioned. “Our carnival last year was such a huge success that we brought it back this season and we are planning our Third Annual Carnival for next season. We block off the streets and have all sorts of rides, games, prizes and giveaways. We provided a DJ this year and had the local firefighters come and the kids got to go on the truck, wear their gear and use the fire hose!” From elaborate-themed events and captivating shows and concerts to movie nights and fun family happenings, Grober delights in taking Boca Grove’s members on an adventure for the senses. Naturally, a key element to any party is food and with the club’s new chef, Grober is in awe of the magic they can create together to bring members the best and most innovative experiences when it comes to dining. “The new chef is the best thing that’s ever happened to me or my events,” Grober said. “He’s inventive, creative and thoughtful. He cares about his craft. Every event I’ve done since he’s been here has been amazing and the feedback is phenomenal.”

Profiles Allan Hutensky, President of the Board RESIDENT PRESIDENT: “We bought our first house here in 1987. I always thought it was a great community with a wonderful golf course. We have 443 families here yet all the amenities the larger clubs have. You can do what you want when you want to do it. Whether it’s golf, tennis or the fitness center. I think that’s unique to be able to have that exclusivity and privilege.” ONBOARD: “The function of the board is to set policy not run the club, that’s management. We’re here to serve the residents.” LOCATION SENSATION: “Our location is the best of all the locations. We have Town Center, a slew of supermarkets, restaurants, shopping.” FULL SPEED AHEAD: “The general manager is really the captain of the ship as far as day-to-day operations. He is knowledgeable in so many different areas and has a tremendous wealth of experience that we rely on in so many different ways.” ALWAYS A GOOD TIME: “We have a wonderful entertainment committee and social director and chairperson. Our events are fabulous. A few months ago we had a mentalist, which was really neat. It involved audience participation. We’ve had just about any type of party you can think of as well as just casual socializing. Our steakhouse is the best restaurant in town.” IN THE MOOD FOR GREAT FOOD: “In most of the gated communities, there’s always a group of people complaining about something but since Chef Laudia came here, there has not been one complaint about the food. He’s been consistently great with the menus and the quality of food he puts out is the best.”

vine time: Pairing the perfect wine to enhance your meal is an art Pierre Leon takes pride in at Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club. eric bojanowski

WINE FINDS: “The task for me is to find boutique wine – things that are of quality with moderate pricing. That can be a challenge. Our members know their wine. The top wine I have is Peter Franus out of Napa. He came here in February to host a wine pairing and tell us about his wines. We have a Dunn Cab that’s really wonderful.” RED RED WINE: “Red wine is a lot more popular with our members than white wine. When you’re making your selection of wine, first you have to decide what you want. Consuming wine is a matter of creating a balance. What is it you want your palate to feel like? Decide what food you want to have, what sauce you want to have. Then pair the wine with that. You could go the other way too if you’re really feeling like a certain type of wine. I typically choose the wine based on the sauce I’m having. I love assisting members who would like a wine suggestion to pair with their meal.”

TEAM WORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK: “This is my sixth season and I consider myself so fortunate because I’m blessed with working with a wonderful staff. We can’t make our members happy unless the staff is involved in doing that. Our staff takes it to a different level. They take service very personally here. We don’t take member satisfaction lightly. There’s nothing we approach lightly. We make sure

everything we do is for satisfaction from our members. Our chef is a true professional and he really has a wonderfully organized group.” VINTAGE ADVANTAGE: “We have a wine room. In my wine selection, I have about 80 to 90 different wines. I have a special list where I keep six wines that are rare and extremely nice for members interested in something really over-the-top fantastic.” CHEERS!: “We have the latest cocktails. I have three young ladies behind the bar who come up with new creative cocktails. Whiskey is making a comeback. I’m always looking at the popular drinks that are out.” PAMPERED PALATE: “Food and drink are some of the greatest joys in life and we offer our members some truly delightful ways to dine. We have Windows – a formal dining atmosphere set in a ballroom; the Wine Room – a relaxing, elegant steakhouse; the Club Room – an excellent spot for pre-dinner cocktails; the Grille Room¬ – a casual and contemporary dining area with a great view of the golf course; Chippers Lounge – a great bar to watch a game at; Turne – a snack spot between the ninth and 18 holes of the golf course and the Poolside Café – an outdoor eating destination with the convenience of poolside dining.”

Profiles Meet Boca Grove’s dynamic new chef, Dominick Laudia By Joanie Cox-Henry

Boca Piquant

16

When it comes to dining at Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club, Executive Chef Dominick Laudia has the right ingredients to make the experience a perfect one. Laudia joined the club as head chef in July 2012. “The major change was to redo all our menus,” Laudia said. “We started tapas, which is a small plates menu, on Friday nights. That’s been well received. We also pair wine flights with it.” Laudia has a true grasp on the concept of country club cuisine yet always keeps his menus fresh and evolving. “We cover every ethnic cuisine. All the holidays are well represented. I try to stay with the trends,” Laudia explained. “A lot of our members are leaning toward healthier eating. We’ve been getting a lot of requests for vegetarian and vegan food so we’ve ventured into that. We want to give them a variety of dining choices. Our vegetable paella and meatless meatloaf are very popular.” When Laudia came on board, he began working closely with Pierre Leon, the club’s Food and Beverage Director. “He helped me get a feel for the membership and what they were looking for. Working very closely with him is an important part of the dining experience at Boca Grove,” Laudia added. The relationship between Laudia and GM Chuck Lehner is also an inspiring one. “I’ve come full circle. When I started out looking for a job as a high school student, I ended up at a restaurant where Mr. Lehner was the chef,” Laudia recalled. “He took me under his wing and taught me a lot of basics I still use to this day. I always enjoyed working with him. He’s also a chef, so his mindset is definitely geared toward that. He knows what I’m talking about and can explain things from a chef’s standpoint. He just gets it.” Laudia also feels Lehner’s an interesting manager to work for because he really knows ever facet of the club. “When you’re talking about a golf tournament or how to fit food into it, he knows all the angles of what’s happening from the conditions of the golf course to what those members will be looking for food-wise when they come back in,” Laudia said. “I don’t know too many managers who have that chef background.” Lehner’s mentorship in Laudia’s life truly helped set a foundation for the country club industry in the chef that gives him an edge over others. “I think we have similar management styles because I learned that from him early on and I believe it really stuck with me,” Laudia said. “The most important thing is for our members to come to the club and have a good experience. Most of them could be here three to seven days a week. We want them to experience the country club lifestyle they’re accustomed to. Member satisfaction is definitely our top priority at Boca Grove. I instill that in my staff and it’s part of my work ethic.” Outside of the club, Laudia has taken a cue from Lehner by mentoring aspiring chefs. “I’m the chapter president of the American Culinary Foundation. I’m very involved in the organization,” Laudia said. “I spend a lot of time with the students at West Boca High School. I sit on their advisory board. I enjoy spending time with them. I’ve had students working for me. I enjoy seeing them progress. I just had a student

graduate from the Culinary Institute who I mentored as a high school student. It’s exciting to see them enter the industry professionally.” With growing requests for more veggie items, Laudia has been utilizing produce from local farms to ensure the freshest quality items to serve Boca Grove’s members. “Our members gravitate toward organic items. We try to bring in heirloom tomatoes and organic foods from local farms,” Laudia said. “We’re looking at the quality of it. We try to support the local farmers.” Laudia, who enjoys spending time with his family, golfing and checking out new restaurants with his wife, says members can look forward to some exciting things this season. “We’re going to do two cooking demos. One will be classroom style and the other is hands-on. I know that’s something new for our members,” Laudia said. “We have some wine dinners we’re planning out. I’ve enjoyed this first season and the membership has been great. The staff has also been great in adjusting to what I want to do. This is a very active club. I’m looking forward to the remainder of the season. His vision for the club is a highly focused one. “I want this to be the destination for dining for the members. I don’t want them to even think about going to a restaurant when they can come here and get an even better quality of food and service than they get outside of here,” Laudia said.

We have Pilates, which is very popular here along with restorative yoga, Hatha yoga and a yoga ball class. It attracts both men and women.” TONING & TRAINING: “We have four personal trainers. The golfers utilize our trainers for specific exercises to help strengthen their golf game.” COMPETITVE EDGE: “We did a March Madness contest, which awarded trophies to the members with the most minutes in the gym. We have a fitness day annually that our members really love. This is our sixth year doing that. We also have classes and lectures all related to health and fitness. We recently had a 5K around the community.” MORE CORE: “We have six reformers to a class. It’s part of the membership. Most clubs charge a fee for that but we do not. We also have private Pilates if members want.” GET FIT THIS SEASON: “You have to eat clean and exercise. You can’t work out and not change your eating habits and expect to lose weight and vice versa. You should do a combination of both for the most lasting results. Get out and walk. Just put your sneakers on and go. Take some Zumba classes. Build muscle with a trainer. It’s 80 percent what you eat so definitely watch your diet and nutrition. Swimming laps for the summer months is also a great calorie burner. We also offer water classes every day.” FEEL THE BURN: “I teach an 8-week boot camp with the members. It’s an intense 500-calorie burn. Members are inside, outside, running stairs. The members really enjoy the results this boot camp delivers.”

Profiles Boca Grove’s renovated course hits a hole in fun with members By Joanie Cox-Henry

Golf tees off at a whole new level with Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club’s 18-hole course redesigned by Jim Fazio. Director of Golf, Chad Kurmel, was brought on staff as part of the fresh, new golf program at the club. “I started at Boca Grove June 15, 2011,” Kurmel said. “Most of the shaping was already done for the new golf course and the day I got here, they actually put grass on the very first hole. I was able to get everything the way I wanted to while the course was being renovated. It was a rare privilege most golf directors don’t get to have.” Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club’s new course has been getting rave reviews from members. “The course has a lot more character to it now,” Kurmel explained. “There’s a lot more undulation. The green complexes are a lot different. There are different levels and more mounding. The members feel the difficulty level has increased slightly. We have bunkers and trees in different places. What’s really great is you can play it every single day and you don’t get tired of it.” Although Boca Grove’s golfing amenities were always popular, Kurmel has been working to expand the golf program and his enthusiasm is attracting new members. “We’re encouraging a lot of tennis players here to come over to golf,” Kurmel said. “We implemented a clinic program to help beginners get into the game of golf. We started that last year and it’s been really successful. We had a few social members join golf as a result.” Kurmel has also been key in involving more youth in the golf program at Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club. “We’re offering a golf program for kids on Saturday mornings and we’re hoping it will grow so when school starts we can have some after school classes for them,” Kurmel added. “While basketball, football, baseball and soccer are great sports to play at school, it will be nice for them to have a sport to come home to as well.” Organizing plenty of fun golf tournaments and mixers for adult members is also a top priority of Kurmel’s. “Our ladies tournaments are generally every Tuesday. Men usually have them once a month,” Kurmel said. “We play different formats every week. We have a couple events every month. In April we did a Couples Nine and Dine. Couples played as foursomes and then came in and had wine and dinner. We really encourage as much camaraderie as possible.” The relationships golf can develop is something that initially attracted Kurmel to the sport early on his life. “I started playing golf when I was four because my parents were golfers. They cut down a 3-wood, a 7 iron and a putter for me,” Kurmel said. “When they would play on the weekends, I would play along with them. As I got older I worked at a golf course on the maintenance crew mowing grass. My parents would drop me off in the morning and come pick me up at night. I would then practice golf all day.” Eventually, Kurmel made it his full-time career. “I love the interaction with the people golf brings. There are so many different backgrounds and playing levels. As a teacher, it’s nice to see the people you’re teaching improve,” Kurmel said. “If they have a great shot or a good round or a good hole, they’ll come in and tell you about it. It feels really good to know you’re helping them further enjoy the game and want to play the game.” Kurmel, who just played at a PGA tour event in Puerto Rico, is a PGA Professional who enjoys teaching golf at Boca Grove as much as he does

playing the game. “If a player wants to be videoed, we can video them. If they need help in a particular area, we have techniques to keep a focus on that,” Kurmel added. “It all depends on what the student wants. We customize it to what works best for them.” Part of what keeps Kurmel’s game so solid is looking back on lessons he received from World Golf Teachers Hall of Famer Bob Toski. “Every time I took a lesson from Bob, I always jotted down everything he said,” Kurmel recalled. “He’s probably the instructor I took the most away from.” While applying lessons he learned from Toski, the PGA Professional, works tirelessly with Pierre Leon and Chef Dominick Laudia on coordinating food for golf events and to keep members excited about what’s on course next. “Golf is a good family game to play. A family of four can go out and enjoy the afternoon together,” Kurmel said. “There are different sets of tees you can play from. It makes it more enjoyable for everyone to play. It’s nice to spend a few hours with one another. What’s really great is it’s here – you don’t have to go anywhere.”

Profiles Richard Centerbar, Director of Tennis swings home a well-rounded events schedule

By Joanie Cox-Henry Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club’s residents have plenty of reasons to celebrate their club’s tennis program with Richard Centerbar at the helm. The Director of Tennis was recently named the 2013 USPTA Florida Pro of the Year. This honor is awarded annually to only one of approximately 1,600 USPTA Professionals in Florida. “I’m honored to be named USPTA Florida Pro of the Year,” Centerbar said. “I feel lucky that my profession just so happens to be my passion. I’ve always strived to do my best in everything I do. It’s so nice to be recognized for my hard work, but I honestly could not have achieved this without the people around me – past, present and future.” Centerbar who has impressively been Boca Grove’s Tennis Director for the past 28 years, picked up his first tennis racquet at 5-years-old. “I played for Boca High and later went to Palm Beach Junior College and FAU.” Always a “people person,” Centerbar was eager to turn his love for tennis into a lifelong career. “My passion is really teaching tennis,”

Centerbar said. “At Boca Grove, we have excellent participation in our tennis program.” Members can play at their leisure on a dozen courts, which consist of 11 Har-Tru and one red clay court. “Our red clay court is really red clay, which is rare,” Centerbar said. “Because of that, players come off the tour wanting to use that court. Andy Murray has played here. We seem to be becoming a destination for players off the tour.” While Boca Grove’s tennis program often partners with the golf program for charity events, club championship events are also important to the members. “We have many fun events for our members throughout the year such as our ‘Battle of the Clubs,’ which includes a barbecue and playing tennis with other area clubs. We always having something exciting going on here.” Centerbar keeps his own game fresh by regularly participating in tennis tournaments. “I play a lot of tournaments,” Centerbar said. “I achieved a No. 3 ranking in the national USPTA Men’s 45 and Over Division, won the USPTA Grand Prix Masters Singles title and I also have experience running several USTA Florida tournaments.”

Testimonials Warren Orlando, Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club resident

Sheila Nickerson, Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club resident

LONGTIME RESIDENT: “My wife and I moved here a long time ago. We’ve been here about 27 years. The changes were more from a membership perspective. Over all, the club has been very well run. Mr. Lehner and Kathy Whitehurst and their team have done an extraordinary job. They bring consistency and excellent financial management along with an ability to communicate with members.”

HOME RUN: “I’ve been a resident at Boca Grove since April 2012. I moved here from Fort Lauderdale. My husband loves golf so I researched all the clubs in the area and Boca Grove immediately seemed like the perfect place.”

WELL GROUNDED: “We have a unique facility here because we’re small enough with 444 residences that we all know one another. Yet we’re big enough that we can have the same facilities as larger clubs. It’s a very intimate community where you get to know your neighbors. The clubhouse is very member-friendly. We have a beautiful golf course and tennis facilities that are fantastic. The overall lifestyle at Boca Grove is an extraordinary one.” A GOOD SPORT: “I enjoy playing the revamped golf course. I’m also a tennis player so I enjoy utilizing the tennis and gym facilities. I also really love the activities we have. Recently, we brought in a new chef who’s doing an unbelievable job. We have the opportunity to dine with gourmet fare and more grill-family oriented cuisine. Everybody’s been very enthusiastic about the quality of the food.” RAISING THE STAKES: “The wine room here is very upscale and it’s getting rave reviews. I’d rather come here than most of the restaurants in town. We’re very fortunate to have these amenities. It’s definitely not what you get in other communities.”

After

LIVING THE DREAM: “One of the benefits of living here is that it’s small. My husband is still working so the location here is ideal. I think it’s better than any other country club in Boca Raton. We have a back gate to the Turnpike and a gate that leads us practically to I-95. We’re two minutes from the mall. My husband feels like he has his own private golf course. There are no tee times and there are very few country clubs with no tee times.” A FINE FIND: “My husband and I have traveled all over the world. In 35 years of marriage we’ve had 11 homes. We used to live in a country club in Atlanta. You can’t get better food than here. It’s truly exceptional. There’s a diverse age group here and everyone is so nice. Making friends has been so easy. I just started playing golf about five months ago. It’s about having a good time and socializing. Everyone makes me feel so comfortable.” DAILY LUXURY: “One of my friends commented that the dues are high and for what I pay in annual dues she could go on three cruises which is about three weeks of vacation. But I do 52 weeks of vacation here! I sincerely mean that. There are some really fabulous things here.”

Testimonials Larry Feldman, Boca Grove Golf and Tennis Club resident HOME SWEET HOME: “I moved to Boca Grove in 1992. Over the years this club has become a whole different experience. It’s very family friendly now and there’s a great mix of residents as well as opportunity for great homes. We have three sons and a 10,000-squarefoot home here. Boca Grove really gave us the opportunity to branch out and expand. It makes for a nice, diverse community. You have your immediate family here and your extended family. HUMBLE BEGINNINGS: “I grew up in the projects of Brooklyn. I wanted my kids to grow up with what I never I had. Every sport I ever played was on concrete – stoopball, stickball. I wanted them to have the country club life. So we moved to this country club.” NEAT EATS: “We always had good food here, but our award-winning chef has taken it to a whole new level and the residents were really ready for that. We have great Friday afternoon hors d’œuvres. Whether we have a buffet or a special event, it’s a great fit for everybody.” A RARE FIND: “For Chuck Lehner, it really is about people management. The crew is unbelievable. Members have daily contact with the incredible team Chuck brought on. Whether it’s the golf pro, tennis pro—Chuck has his fingerprint on it and his crew makes everything so delightful. I’ve had the opportunity to work with him on a one-on-one basis and there’s really no one better in the business.”

HAVING A BALL: “I play golf four to five times a week. The pro shop is fantastic along with the course.” HAPPY DAYS: “My husband has a countdown on the calendar to come back down. Last year we spent six months here and this year, we spent eight months. Mr. Lehner really knows what he’s doing in acquiring talent and maintaining talent. There’s a tremendous standard set here and our food at Boca Grove is over the top. We eat here at least six times a week.” CREATIVE EVENT: “I wanted to do a Paris theme for a golf event here and Pierre got us an Eiffel Tower ice sculpture. We got a French singer, topiaries and French lanterns like you’d see strolling on a street in Paris. It’s a party here all the time!” FUN & FIT: “I’ve always gone to the gym, but recently I participated in the boot camp workout here. Members ages 20 to 75 participated in the eight week course and it was an excellent experience.” FAMILY MATTERS: “There are so many fun activities for kids here. My great niece is still talking about the carnival. You can really feel the warmth of community here.”

Fashion Ken Downing breaks down fab fashions from spring to fall By Joanie Cox-Henry Fashion is this fabulous, evolutionary body of art that extends far beyond clothing and accessories. And when it comes to the art of fashion, Neiman Marcus’s Fashion Director Ken Downing is Michelangelo. I met with Ken Downing April 10 at Neiman Marcus in Boca Raton, which was the day before his big spring trends/fall preview fashion show. Here’s what the style icon had to say about traveling, the color of the moment and rock ’n’ roll influence. Do you travel to Boca Raton often? “I love coming to Boca. I try to come here often. I have a very lovely following of women here I love to see. The city of Delray is also so charming. I enjoy wandering up and down the streets and just taking in the city, but my home base is American Airlines. I split my time between Dallas and New York but truly, I’m always on the road. I just came back from New York, saw the Paris collections, then did a show in Atlanta. I went to Shanghai, then St. Louis and onto Arizona and Philadelphia.” Do you use social media to develop trends? “I do a little social networking but a lot of it is instinct and following my heart. I like to stay really in tune with museum exhibits, the music industry--it’s all very connected. I really try to stay true to my own ideas because if I bring in too many opinions of other people, it gets confusing. Even doing fashion week, I don’t read Women’s Wear Daily or New York Times reviews. I do it all when the shows are over.” What is the hot color for style this summer? “For spring, it’s all about orange. Orange is the new neutral. A woman has to have an orange shoe or handbag. If you don’t get an orange handbag, do not leave the house! Orange can be worn with other shades of orange or against lime green, pink or all the beautiful shades of blue that are also so hot this season. I’m also loving orange because it’s moving into the fall season. I’m so obsessed with orange, I painted the front door of my lake house safety orange.”

pointed toes look so right again. We’ve gotten this menswear influence from “Downton Abbey” and now it’s gone to Abbey Road. The tomboytough sensibility for women is really something I’m feeling throughout the market.” What are some must-have items for men? “For men, there are a lot of jewel tones happening this fall. Cranberry, topaz, emerald green and golds. All of this rocker, grunge and punk sensibility have also appeared on the men’s catwalks. But it’s not grunge in a dirty street way--it’s grunge in a glamorous sense.”

What do think will be the must-have hue this fall? “Red will replace orange as a neutral as we move into the next season. When you pair a red shoe or red handbag with black, it makes black worth a second look. I’m also liking black because it’s a real rock ’n’ roll influence for the fall season. This whole musical messaging took place because the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced a punk theme for the Met Gala this May--Punk Chaos to Couture. For the spring shows, Phillip Lim did some grunge on his runway and Dries Van Noten did grunge as well. Don’t we love a ‘90s moment? The biker motocross jackets we saw for spring will return this fall.”

What’s the style of bag that’s hot? “For the spring season, it’s all about high voltage color. It’s not so much about the size or structure. I like clashing color because it looks more modern. For the fall, it’s all about the mini bags. Every major handbag designer has created a mini version of their iconic bags. With all of this tomboy influence, there’s something super girly and feminine about carrying a mini bag paired with oversized toppers and great rock ’n’ roll jackets. Mini bags have a darling charm to it. You’re going to see every bag you love and adore in a mini shape. It’s amazing.”

As a shoe lover, I have to ask, what’s happening on the shoe front this fall? “Pencil skirts and stilettos with a pointed toe are going to be huge. It’s a very Deborah Harry/Blondie look. And for a downtown girl, skinny jeans or a legging with a flat, menswear-inspired shoe also with a pointed toe is in. Pointed toe pumps, rocker booties and flat menswear shoes with

What are your thoughts on animal prints for fall? “Animal prints are another huge trend for the fall. Leopard is always with us and never goes away. It’s really a neutral. Leopard, tiger, zebra-worn together is going to be big. Leopard bag, zebra coat--bring all the animals together. I love that eclectic mix. It makes it so much cooler. It really brings this whole rock ’n’ roll referencing together in a fun way.”

Boca Piquant caught up with Stock at Bloomingdale’s in Aventura Mall in March where he was signing shirts for fans. This month, he opened a Robert Graham boutique in Town Center at Boca Raton. Here’s what he had to say about the latest happenings in his whimsical world. Pour & Polish Nail & Wine Bar is nailing the trend of mixing the perfect pampering experience with some quality wine. The new Boca nail salon has been open for about three months and is already gaining a loyal following. “I always enjoyed getting my nails done but every salon I was going to, I felt like it was overcrowded and the cleanliness wasn’t there,” said Pour & Polish Nail & Wine Bar owner Deborah. “It took me about two years to fully develop this concept for a nail salon, but I’m thrilled to bring a nail salon to the public from a customer’s perspective.” Pour & Polish Nail & Wine Bar carries 16 types of wines to choose from. “We stock eight red and eight white,” Deborah described. “You get a card and press a button on the wine machines and you can get a taste, a half-pour or a full glass. I want it to feel like you’re in your home getting a manicure or pedicure.” Impeccable cleanliness, top-notch nail services and friendly staff are priorities on Deborah’s agenda for her business. “Everything in the salon is white so you can really see the cleanliness immediately,” Deborah noted. “I don’t do nails, so I’m really a customer at my own salon! Butcher & the Burger

Town Center Mall 6000 Glades Road Boca Raton, FL 33431 561-732-4202 ButcherAndTheBurger.com

On the heels of the original, highly acclaimed Butcher & the Burger location in Chicago’s Lincoln Park comes the company’s second mini-outpost, in Boca Raton’s sprawling Town Center Mall. Inspired by an old- fashioned butcher shop, and largely concerned with the responsible, natural, and local sourcing of ingredients, this eatery is focused on creating and perfecting the juiciest, healthiest burgers in town, paired with delicious, award- winning Kennebec potato French Fries and/or an assortment of gourmet salads and homemade soups. Diners select their own proteins from the finest-quality specialty items, ranging from grass-fed beef, turkey, and fresh shrimp, to seasonal game such as boar, venison, bison, elk and ostrich. Choose to have your burger prepared simply, with salt and pepper, or with one of Butcher & the Burger’s houseblended, all-natural seasoning mixes (think “Umami miso soy glaze,” “Chicago Steakhouse,” and “Grandma’s Onion Soup Mix” blends). Your tailor-made recipe is char-broiled to excellence, then topped off with goat, American, cheddar, mozzarella, Swiss, or blue cheese. Lastly, pick from a very long list of extra toppings, such as the world-famous Benton’s Tennessee mountain-smoked bacon, fried egg, black truffle aioli, and/or avocado, and your choice of a wheat, pretzel, or croissant bun.

BOCA WEST RECIEVES distinguished EMERALD CLUB AWARD Boca West Country Club was awarded with the Distinguished Emerald Club award by BoardRoom magazine, one of the most respected trade publications serving private clubs. The Distinguished Clubs award program uses a club-specific rating system based on an extensive evaluation process that distills and measures a club’s Member Experience. As defined by Distinguished Clubs, “Member Experience” is that special combination of “qualities” that a private club provides its members. It is not just the quality of service, or of the facilities, or of the product provided, it is also the quality of the staff and of the management, as well as the overall club governance they deliver. The most important quality, however, is the quality of the intangible. While difficult to measure, the latter is comprised of those magic moments experienced, the members befriended, the memorable events and famous tournaments attended, as well as the club traditions, history, and heritage proudly recognized.
