THREE B’s IN A TIZZY QUEEN B EDITORS OFFER DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES ON FEMINISM From Editor Queen Mother, Pam Doto aka Old-School Feminist You never know when a conversation with colleagues will set off an office controversy; most of us stick to subjects that won’t prompt a scene by the Xerox machine. So when I asked one of the editors of this magazine if she considered herself a feminist, I thought it was a safe question, and some commiserating would soon be in order. When she said no — absolutely not! — frowning and shaking her head as if I had just said her mother-in-law was charming, I was stunned. How could this be? When I ran down my checklist of all the characteristics of a feminist, she had them in spades. After all, feminism is simply the advocacy of women’s rights for social, political and economic equality with men. But in her mind, the term conjured up images of beastly, humorless women in heavy boots, burning bras and screeching about oppression. Women are doing just fine, she told me. We are securing more leadership positions, bringing home the bacon, frying it up in the pan and all that other empowering stuff that can be wrapped up in a catchy jingle. Her worldview is vastly different from mine. We were both born in the ’60s, but life experiences have led us to different conclusions. So, here we are in 2012 starting up a women’s publication at a time when women have much on their minds and much to talk about. There are the likes of Rush Limbaugh blasting Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke, who testified before Congress in support of mandating health insurers to cover contraceptive costs. Limbaugh called her a slut and a prostitute on his radio show. There is the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which was the first bill President Barack Obama signed into law when he took office. The act provides more legal channels to women seeking equal pay for equal work. Presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s campaign came under fire recently for not having a ready answer on whether Romney would support it.

EDITORIAL

There is a state-by-state scaling back of abortion rights, which has women wondering why we are fighting battles we thought were won decades ago. The “war on women” has become a catchphrase of the news cycle, but obviously not every woman feels under siege. Our perceptions and dreams differ, but we are bound together by our history. At Queen B, we hope to acknowledge our struggles yet celebrate all that we have gained and cheer each other on in these pages. It doesn’t matter if you call it feminism or just common sense. Rebuttal from Editor Kyara LomerCamarena, aka Girly Feminist Women are doing just fine?!?! What about the Indian man who recently beat his baby to death because she was a girl? Or the fact that women in Saudi Arabia aren’t allowed to drive? Or that women who are raped in some countries are stoned to death because their honor was violated? Or in our own country that not all women get paid maternity leave (and that it’s considered a “disability”) and that the equal rights amendment was never ratified to include gender?! Women in the U.S. may be doing better, but women in the

rest of the world are NOT doing fine. Nowhere near fine, actually. What we need to do is preach about what feminism ACTUALLY is. And that just because U.S. women are doing “better,” a majority of women need feminism more than ever. I think the stereotypical feminist

sometimes actually hurts the cause of true feminism because oftentimes women think they can’t be “girly” and be a “feminist,” when the true cause of feminism has nothing to do with outward appearance. The extreme usually get the most attention.

We still have a lot of work to do. Rebuttal from Editor Laura Kokus, aka Oblivious Feminist I know Pam can defend herself, but when she spoke of “women are doing just fine,” those are my words, so you can blame me for that. And what you mention in your argument is horrible and evil, but that kind of female degradation goes on all the time. The man who beat his baby girl, you think that’s new? Women in India abort their babies if they find out they are girls. Stoning of women; that’s been going on forever. Acid attacks? Child marriages-Yeah, there’s a lot of BS out there right now. The countries that allow that don’t even have a word for “feminism.” I think Pam’s pointing out what is going on in the U.S. It’s been a slow-go for equal rights for all, but think of all the other groups trying to have the same rights as rich white men: women, blacks, gays, immigrants, etc... We cannot take on the ills of the world but we can highlight how women in this country have progressed in the last 40 years. Offer some hope to women, perhaps. For me, I don’t want to be equal to a man. I want to be better than a man. Where did that measurement come from anyway? Oh wait, men.

Poker Faces Making huge plays in a male-dominated game By Andrea Richard

In the world of poker, Robin McCarty and Lauren Failla do more than massage chips, don poker faces and shuffle cards on felt tables. The two Broward residents are co-owners of the largest female conglomerate in the poker industry — Empire Industries. They didn’t launch their careers anywhere near a casino; the game of cards was merely a hobby that eventually turned into something more serious. McCarty worked a 17-year stint in the entertainment business. She resigned and set her sights on raising a family. Her husband, Jason, taught her how to play poker, and the game of cards won her over. She played cash games and proved to be successful, winning enough hands to earn a full-time living while raising two children. “I have to give credit to my husband,” McCarty said. “He taught me … how to play the game like a man.” There are almost 60 million poker players in the United Stats. Only 10 percent of them are women. Failla, a New York transplant, grew up playing poker. Frequently the only woman at the table, she said the male players weren’t aware of her playing savvy and doubted her ability — something she and McCarty still face today. Despite an often unwelcoming attitude from male players, female poker player have an edge over their male counterparts. “Women players are the hardest players to figure out,” McCarty said. And what man really has a woman figured out?

“Because women are hard to read, men have a hard time playing against them,” Failla said. “Women don’t have as many ‘tells,’ meaning their facial expressions, emotions. Women can control that a lot more than male players.” In the game, a poker player needs to know how to read body language, possess sharp critical thinking and strategy skills, and have basic math skills. Not only is reading body language vital, but controlling one’s own mannerisms and emotions with consistency is key. “A poker face is a lack of expression,” Failla said. She said techniques include wearing glasses to hide the eyes, a hat and something around the neck to hide veins that may throb when nerves kick in. ”The poker face is more than about face; it’s a matter of the player’s entire body language,” McCarty said. Failla adds, “Part of being a good poker player is doing things consistently, the exact same way as you did them before. You’re playing the last 20 hands the exact same way the as you play the last hand you just been dealt.” McCarty said poker isn’t gambling. It’s a sport. Failla recognizes poker as a game of skill. Winning doesn’t come down to luck but rather “manipulating the odds in your favor,” she said. Failla indeed mastered the odds in her favor when she decided to launch her own business. In 2004, she was playing at Seminole Classic in Hollywood, and an idea for an opportunity came to light. “I saw there was a niche in the market for women. There were no women’s-only events, and I thought to myself, ‘Someone should start ladies events,’” said Failla, who has 15 years of event-planning experience under her belt. “So I put the two together, and everyone thought I was crazy.” She launched High Heel Poker Tours, an all-women’s poker tournament. In 2006, Failla met McCarty through the tournaments. They bonded over poker and eventually decided to join forces and go into the poker business together. McCarty owned PMS, a poker attire line, and Failla owned a women’s poker academy and was succeeding with High Heel Poker Tours. Failla now hosts more than 50 tournaments a year in Canada, the Caribbean and the United States. In 2010, they expanded their business and co-founded Peace, Love and Poker, an at-home poker party service. Eventually, the two merged the four enterprises under one company, Empire Industries. How the two balance friendship, a business partnership and a family life with children is a

bit an accomplishment in itself. “My husband says we share a brain,” Failla jokes. “She is my long-lost twin sister,” McCarty chimes in. But in the end, the balancing act the two enjoy is credited to the support of their families. “If this ends all tomorrow, we will still be professional poker players and best friends,” Failla concludes giving McCarty a high-five like a giddy youngster. As for parting advice for newbies entering the world of poker, McCarty stresses to mind your money, never go beyond your means and to “never drink alcohol at the table — ever.” To get into the game and learn more, visit Empire-industries.net.

WORK

IN MY

JOB More women are taking on jobs that were traditionally filled by men. Let us introduce you to a few.

Why did you choose this line of work? I decided to get into this field because I want to do something everyone dreams of doing – vacationing for life. My job is what people have saved up to do any chance they can. I live on an island with palm trees all around me, great weather all year round, and I am on the water every day. What’s your secret in balancing work and life?   Balancing work and life is easier than the average job. I don’t have to take my job home with me, and if I choose to, it’s in a fun way. What was your most memorable on-thejob experience? This guy got on the boat with his family and secretively brought on his brother’s (cremated) remains, which, by the way, is illegal on any vessel with paying passengers. The family wanted to throw the remains overboard with out anyone knowing. As time went by, one family member asked why all the flags were going in the same direction. About an hour later, the family decided it was time to throw the ashes overboard. When they did it, the ashes flew directly in the

wind and went all over the people on the boat. We had to explain afterwards that what they did was completely wrong and illegal, but it still made for a good story.

LISA GOULD Boat Captain Age: 29 Lives in Key West Single and no children

What are the advantages of being a female in your profession? No. 1, there aren’t many of us out there. No. 2, you have a lot of opportunity to observe male captains and the mistakes they make, and that saves us from making the same mistakes. What are the disadvantages and/or challenges?  Men have a certain confidence level in this line of work. Women must work twice as hard and know twice as much on all sides of the spectrum. Because you are a woman, it is often assumed you know nothing and can’t handle the job. Even to this day, some guys will not accept that I am a captain and will find anything I do wrong. I love this because I just look at them and smile, knowing that what they are saying is wrong and stupid, and they look like an idiot for saying it. When you’re not at work, what do you do for fun?  When I am not working I love traveling. I have to see the world!

DEANNA SOLOWAY-SIMON Medical Director, Pediatric Emergency Department, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Age: 39 Lives in Weston with her husband and two children How many years have you worked in your position? 7 years Why did you choose this line of work? My father is a physician, and from the time I was small, he used to take me on rounds with him. I was always in awe of him and all the patients he helped, and I knew I wanted to be able one day to make such a difference in people’s lives. I decided on pediatrics after volunteering at St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, where I grew up, and feeling such immense personal rewards after working with the amazingly strong children who are treated there. What is your most memorable on-the-job experience? It’s difficult to pick just one memorable on-the-job experience. It is always rewarding to make a small difference in the lives of patients and parents. Helping parents through difficult end-of-life moments or holding their hands as we explain a new diagnosis that their child is being treated for is so personally rewarding, and hopefully, these interactions make tough moments for families even a bit easier. What are the advantages of being a woman in your profession? I truly believe that being a woman but more importantly a mother has made me a better physician. When my son was first ill, my medical knowledge went by the wayside and an overwhelming sense of helplessness and anxiety came over me. I have learned to channel those feelings that happen as part of being a parent myself and use them to calm the parents and educate them regarding their child’s illness. In my administrative role, I am not sure that success depends on your gender. I think a good leader inspires those around them... I have emotional intelligence, which is key in managing people and approaching issues that arise. To some, these may seem more feminine characteristics; I believe they should be present in all leaders. I also consider myself a strong person. What are the disadvantages and/or challenges of being a woman in a traditionally maledominated field? I believe that since my performance as a medical director of the Emergency Department has been strong that the respect has been earned. I don’t know if whether being a relatively young female made some people doubt my capabilities initially. In the end, it is about the product delivered. In my role, I am able to voice my opinion and refuse to back down on issues I believe need to be addressed to improve the process in the Emergency Department and overall patient experience.

WORK STEPHANIE SHORE  Cantor Age: 47 Lives in West Palm Beach In a committed relationship and has a 16-year-old daughter How many years have you been a cantor? I started on the pulpit when I was 17. I have been at Congregation B’nai Israel since 1991 — 21 years    What inspired you to become a cantor? My mother was the first woman cantor in history in 1964. I grew up watching, listening and admiring her and what she did. I was so moved by the beauty and joy of Jewish music. I was also so proud of my mom. I followed in her footsteps. Once again, a first — the first time the role of cantor was passed down from mother to daughter.   What are the advantages of being a female cantor? Both men and women make outstanding cantors. I am not sure

REV. RHONDA LILES Senior Minister at Unity of the Palm Beaches Age: 55 Lives in Lake Worth Divorced, has two daughters and two granddaughters

that there is a specific advantage from being a woman.   What are the disadvantages and/or challenges of being a female cantor?  Throughout Jewish History, the role was only filled by men. The challenges have been made a lot easier because of the fact that my mom paved the way for women cantors back in the ’60s. Now 60 percent of all cantors are female.   When you’re not at work, what do you do for fun?  My free time is limited because of the demands of my position within the congregation and the community; however, when I do have time, I love spending it with my daughter, Gabrielle. I love watching old movies from the ’40s and ’50s, and I love to cook.

How long have you been in this position? I have been the senior minister at Unity of the Palm Beaches for two years. I have been a licensed, ordained Unity Minister for nine years.

to see the world, which I did to some extent. I joined the Air Force and saw a world very different from the one in which I grew up in western Nebraska. I also started on a career path helping people.

Why did you choose this line of work?   It is more like this line of work chose me, as I felt truly called to ministry about 13 years ago. I had worked in community mental health, rehabilitation hospitals and skilled nursing facilities for many years, and felt I was already serving humanity.

What is your most memorable on-the-job experience?   There are so many that my heart remembers, from the very first time I spoke as an ordained minister, to my first church, every christening, wedding, memorial and sacred service, to returning to my home, community and church in Metairie, La., after Hurricane Katrina and being part of the rebuilding process.  I am in awe of the resilience of human spirit

What did you aspire to become when you were young? I planned to join the Air Force

and so honored to be part of people’s lives. What are the challenges you’ve faced working in a traditionally maledominated field? What I have observed is that generally males seem to get hired first, paid more, and taken more seriously. When you’re not at work, what do you do for fun?   I love to go to the beach, read, play with my granddaughters, and I have two cats to keep me company. What’s your secret in balancing work and life?   For me it is about prayer,

meditation, practicing what I preach and sometimes even making sure that fun, self-care, nonwork activities are on my schedule. What are the advantages of being a woman in your profession?   This is something I do not recall every being asked. Thinking about it, I would have to say that I have not had to deal with any stereotype reflective of “woman minister” and being a woman has provided an advantage of opening a dialogue opportunity about spirituality without the “in your face” religion. I love that sometimes when someone will find out I am the minister of a church, the immediate response is “no way” because I do not fit the stereotype.

Pay difference by gender Women’s pay is 80 cents to every dollar paid to men in Florida, new report says

FREE BOTOX CONSULT

®

By Marcia Heroux Pounds Sun Sentinel Working women in Florida are paid 80 cents for every dollar paid to men, according to a recent report released by the National Partnership for Women & Families. In Florida, the median pay for a woman working full time is $32,762 per year, while the median yearly pay for a man is $40,731, the group says. That means there’s an annual gap of $7,969 between full-time working men and women in the state. The report, which examined all 50 states, says there are significant costs of the nation’s genderbased wage gap. The median yearly pay for women in the United States is $10,784 less than their male counterparts. African American women and Latinas fare worse, being paid $19,575 and $23,873 less than men, respectively.

If the gap were eliminated, here are some examples of what working women could afford, according to the group: • 1.7 years’ worth of food in the state of Washington • 2,746 more gallons of gas in Colorado • 14 more months rent in Wisconsin • 3.7 years’ worth of family health insurance premiums in Connecticut

Florida women pay extra for health coverage, report says Florida women pay extra for health coverage, report says Bob LaMendola Sun Sentinel Florida women pay extra for health coverage, report says State one of 39 with ‘gender gap’ in health insurance rates Health insurance costs Florida women as much as 52 percent more than men — up to $1,141 more on average each year —because of a gender gap that has existed for decades, a recent report stated. And that doesn’t include the extra cost of maternity coverage. Florida is one of 39 states that allow insurers to charge different rates based on gender. Young and middle-aged women pay more because they tend to use more health care, insurance experts said. Florida’s gender gap in rates is in line with the rest of those states. “Women go to the doctor more. Young men still have that invincible attitude and don’t go unless someone makes them,” said Michael

Caplan, a partner at Insurance Depot agency in Margate. The question is whether it’s good public policy to make women bear the cost of biology, rather than spread the cost across society, said Mary Beth Senkewicz, an insurance consultant who was Florida’s deputy insurance commissioner until last fall. The health overhaul passed by Congress in 2010 will eliminate the gender gap in rates as of 2014. The report came from the National Women’s Law Center, which favors ending the gap. It looked at individual health policies, but not group policies most people get at work, which do not have gender-based rates. The report found Florida women with individual policies pay 10 percent to 26 percent more than men at age 25, and 20 percent to 52 percent more at 40. Middle-aged women paid $599 to $1,141 more per year on average, depending on coverage. At 55, the gap in rates has disappeared, the report found. Insurance experts said men consume more health care than women — and pay higher rates — starting at about age 50.

MIKE

STEWART

HUGH

JOSEPH

Age: 61 | Status: Married

Age: 52 | Status: Married

Age: 43 | Status: Gay

Age: 33 | Status: Single

Do men obsess over a woman’s weight as much she does?

The younger a man is, the more concerned he is about his appearance and those who accompany him. The advantage of the aging process is the reduction of that concern. In other words, old people tend to not give a s#^!

Hardly. At least at my age I completely understand that nature does what nature does to our bodies. Most men actually like a little extra on women. Thin is out. That’s not to say that a thin girl in a bikini is unattractive, but really it’s what’s upstairs that counts (not upstairs as in chest).

Gay men obsess over their weight as much as women do. Straight men just worry about their looks overall — they don’t get the connection between calories and waistlines. Besides, society has decided that an overweight man can still be respected as professional wrestlers, security guards or Southern sheriffs. The same is not necessarily true of overweight women.

I do have a preference for a certain body type. Generally speaking, though, looks tend to get a woman’s foot in the door with a guy, but a lack of personality will get them kicked right back out that same door. Some guys really dig certain body types, and those guys will obsess. Other guys just like the fun times, the sexy times, the romantic times, the comforting times or just plain old time with gals, so weight will not be a factor at all.

What does it take to make you cry?

Crying is an emotional response, not only to an extremely sad event, as the loss of a loved one, but also in response to an extremely good event, where you observe extraordinary behavior by an ordinary person.

Onions. Animal cruelty. Spilt beer. A sharp stick in the eye.

Men don’t cry. They will tear up over sports, but those are always tears of joy when their teams win, not tears of sorrow, so they don’t count. When their teams lose, men get mad. They know they could have done a better job had they been on the team, regardless of their age, weight or physical abilities. Little known fact: Gay men cry less than straight men because they don’t like sports and were teased about crying too much while growing up.

In the past? Not much. Nowadays? Quite a bit. Girls used to make me cry. Looking back at the things I used to cry over made me feel like a huge-mongous (the offspring of an incestuous relationship between huge and humongous) tool. I did not like those parts of my personality, so I work to remove them. Now, Rocco’s last scene in Boondock Saints barely jerks a tear from my ducts.

When you use the term verbally attacked, it implies a harsh, unwarranted exchange. Most men would defend their wife if that were the case. If the verbal exchange is concerned with conflicting views of a woman’s domestic responsibilities, most men are better off staying out of it. If the mother is degrading your wife on a personal level, I believe you then are required to oppose your mother, which isn’t easy. In most cases, the mother was the one who raised the husband. She is only applying the same doctrine you already experienced as a child in her house.

It seems my mother liked my wife better than me. Regardless, if my mother would give my wife a hard time, she’d just ignore it, as my wife knew who was really in charge (my wife was, not my mother). Situations like Everybody Likes Raymond are rare, at least as I see it.

For the same reason they don’t defend themselves when their own wives attack them: Because men are frightened of women. Didn’t you know that? Gay men aren’t frightened of women. Gay men are fond of women in the exact same way a cat is fond of its owner.

This one is pretty simple, really. In a highly emotional situation, logic flies right out the door, and instincts take over. A man can exert dominance over another man because we are wired to strive to be the alpha male. Another man assaulting his woman just gives him an outlet in this day of reason for exercising that primal desire. I am not familiar with primal instincts toward the matriarch, but I would imagine most species hold the matriarchal figure in high regards. The other thing is, guy number two can be pruned from your life. Mom will always be there, even when she is a prune.

Why are men quick to defend their wives when they’re being physically or verbally attacked by another man but are silent when the attacker is their mother?

APPARENT Two local specialists offer insight and solutions to female hair loss By Ifonia Jean Hair loss is most commonly thought of as a man’s issue. But according to the American Academy of Dermatology, women are almost just as likely to suffer from this condition. “Anyone after the age of 17 can experience hair loss and thinning,” said licensed cosmetologist and trichologist Peggy Nisbett–Rigg, of Hair Is In Unisex Salon in North Lauderdale. “By the time a woman realizes that she is experiencing hair loss, she will have already lost 30 to

50 percent of her hair.” On average, women shed 50 to 100 strands of hair a day. Rigg said the loss of more than 100 strands a day may be due to a hormonal imbalance, illness, medication, postpartum, psychological issues, stress, poor nutrition or genetics. Even bad hair weaves can impact the growth of your natural hair. Linda Alfieri, owner of Linda Alfieri Hair Replacement Salon in Boca Raton, agrees. She said a lot of her clients’ hair loss conditions are unique. “Many of the women I work

with have lost their hair due to chemotherapy, lupus, alopecia, and some of them are burn victims,” she said, adding that her clients are referrals sent to her by dermatologists, oncologists and plastic surgeons. “My relationship with these doctors enables me to offer medical billing and financing options to my clients. I am able to process medical insurance claims for up to $4,000 for hair loss. We don’t accept all insurance, but the ones we do usually cover about 80 percent of the hair replacement and treatment costs.” To help her clients develop a hair care regimen, Rigg encourages a hair exam to gain some insight on their sudden hair loss or thinning. Rigg’s exam includes a health history questionnaire, various tests on the clients strands of hair, as well as a close–up look of the hair and scalp using a microscope. “Just as we care for our bodies and get annual physical exams, we

should also be as concerned about our hair and have it examined,” she said. Once she is able to make a diagnosis, Rigg can create a rigorous hair regrowth treatment. “My method of treatment includes scalp exfoliation, washing the hair with a clarifying and cleansing shampoo, conditioning the hair with a volumizing conditioner and applying a dihydrotesterone (DHT) blocker to inhibit the growth of the hormone,” she said. “DHT is known to attack hair follicles and stipulate further hair growth.” She also uses a low-laser therapy machine to help stimulate regrowth in the hair follicles. “My clients can expect improvement within four weeks of intense treatment,” she said. Alfieri also makes handmade wigs. “My staff and I create wigs by hand, paying careful attention to the needs of each client,” she said.

“We do custom fittings, coloring, styling and repairs.” She also provides hair extensions for clients with thinning hair. “Our extensions are mainly European and Remy hair,” she said. “We have three factories overseas, which we work very close with, and they are willing to ship products to us overnight for emergency situations.” Alfieri said she is looking to expand her company to a greater network. “I want to educate doctors so they can build their business in the field of hair replacement and put more people to work,” she said. HOW OLD IS TOO OLD? How to preserve cosmetics, and knowing when to throw makeup away. By Andrea Richard

SHELF LIFE Concealer/foundation: 6-8 months Powder/eye shadow 1-2 years Lipstick/gloss: 1-2 years Nail polish: 2 years Eyeliner/lipliner: 2 years

Ever wonder if your makeup gets too old to use? Queen B caught up with makeup artist Erika Mendy, co-owner of the Mendy House in Fort Lauderdale, a fashion photography studio and prop house, for advice. “The truth is that using makeup past its shelf life most likely won’t hurt you or make you sick, but you will not get the same quality of product,” Mendy said. “Shockingly enough, makeup can breed bacteria, so it’s always good to be on the safe side.”

MAKING MAKEUP LAST LONGER Keep your makeup in a cool place: Never leave it in the car! Wash your brushes at least once a month with baby shampoo. It’s inexpensive and effective. Keep lipstick in fridge to extend the shelf life.

Domestic violence hits home By Mary Riedel

I

n the time it takes to count to nine, somewhere in the U.S., a woman will be battered. Here in South Florida, the numbers add up in a staggering fashion: one in three women, one in seven men and one in 10 teens will experience domestic violence at some point in their lives. Abuse can take many forms and cuts across all socioeconomic, demographic and ethnic backgrounds. There is no single face of domestic violence. It can be physical and often lethal, but abuse can also take the forms of verbal, emotional, sexual and financial abuse that shatters self-esteem and exposes children to unhealthy messages about relationships, which are often repeated as they grow older. In just the first week of 2012, there were six deaths in Broward County, resulting in three domestic violence incidents — including a 6-month-old baby. That is why greater awareness about the issues surrounding family violence is so important — being attuned to the warning signs and knowing where to seek help for yourself or advise others. Women in Distress is one of the oldest and largest of the 42 domestic violence centers serving our state. In our region, there are two other centers: Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse in Delray Beach and Harmony House in West Palm Beach. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS? • Signs of physical abuse including unexplained injuries, bruises, scarring, broken bones and other debilitating injuries. • Children who are withdrawn, doing poorly in school and exhibiting other changes in sleeping and behavior patterns such as acting out aggressively may be witnessing abuse or be victims of physical, emotional or sexual abuse. • Isolation by the abuser of his or her partner from their family and friends; forbidding and limiting contact with others. • Control of all the family finances; control of where a victim can go, where and how they may work can also be signs.

Mary Riedel is president and CEO of Women in Distress of Broward County.

• Verbal and emotional abuse that is belittling and humiliating.

FACT: In just the first week of 2012, there were six deaths in Broward County, resulting in three domestic violence incidents — including a 6-month-old baby.

TALK TO YOUR TEENS New studies confirm that one in 10 high school students say a boyfriend or girlfriend has physically hurt them.

BECOME AN ADVOCATE FOR CHANGE Support the work of centers such as Women in Distress through in-kind and cash donations, support of events, and volunteering. More information about way to get involved can be found at www.womenindistress.org.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? Seek help for yourself and encourage others to reach out to agencies such as Women in Distress. You and others deserve better. If you see or suspect abuse, call 911, local enforcement, the state abuse hotline at 800-96-ABUSE or Women in Distress’ hotline at 954-761-1133; seek help and work out a safety plan. Link to others who may be able to help such as friends, family, clergy, doctors and teachers. Like the staff at Women in Distress, many of these professionals are mandated by law to report suspected abuse. Gather up important documents such as identification, passports, birth certificates and Social Security numbers for adults and children and keep them in a secure place. Get an emergency phone and separate phone number. Have a safety plan, including exit from rooms or houses could be blocked or where there are weapons in the home.

Unveiling wedding traditions

By Dr. Beverly Lomer

Weddings and fairy tales have a lot in common. The attention is focused on the bride in an elaborate gown and often wearing a tiara. There is an air of magic surrounding the wedding party, ceremony and reception. The princess of fairy tale lore is also the central character: She’s beautiful, richly dressed and often assisted by spirits and charms.

L

et’s face it, even though a wedding represents the joining of a couple, it is usually the bride who does most of the planning, and much of the ceremony revolves around her. It is the rare bride who forgoes the dress and the wedding party. And often the selection of attire for the attendants becomes an exercise that tests even the closest friendships. Tracing the history of modern wedding traditions back to their origins in the Middle Ages, we find that some of them derive from the subjected position that women held in premodern times. If brides (and grooms) today knew where some of the cherished wedding customs actually came from, would they continue to embrace them?

BRIDESMAIDS The origins of wedding attire are rooted in a belief that spirits sought to attack the bride. So in early times, female attendants dressed identically to the woman being married so as to confuse the evil demons. Later, the bride dressed in her best, but the custom of identically attired attendants remained.

GROOMSMEN On the male side, the attendants had an entirely different origin. In the tribal and isolated societies of the premodern period, women were scarce, and brides were procured by capture. The original attendants were the groom’s helpers in kidnapping and absconding with the woman. This is also why the bride stands to the left of the groom during the ceremony. In olden days, the man had to keep his sword arm free in case members of the woman’s family sought to take her back. It is also the origin of the custom where the groom carries the bride over the threshold after being wed. In the past, the unwilling woman sometimes had to be dragged into the man’s abode.

THE DRESS In weddings today, the bride’s appearance is a central — if not the central — feature. Though most women wear an elaborate white or version of white gown, the wearing of white is a fairly recent development. Women in earlier eras simply wore their best dress. It was Queen Victoria’s choice of white in the 19th century that initiated the tradition we now continue. Since its introduction, the symbolism of the white dress evolved and often denotes purity, originally meaning virginity, as per most Christian religious beliefs.

FEATURE

THE VEIL While the veil might be an elaborate fashion statement in today’s weddings, its origins had a variety of meanings, some of which might give us pause. The veil was thought to hide the bride from the evil spirits until she was wed. It was also used to cover the face of the woman in arranged marriages to prevent the man from rejecting her until the vows had been spoken. And more troubling, the veil has had a long history of denoting women’s submission to men. According to St. Paul, men do not veil themselves because they are the image of God, while the woman is the image of man [1 Corinthians 11:4-16]. And thus, the veil represents the sign of male authority on her head. Brides originally wore their hair long and flowing to symbolize their virginity. The veil that covered the face originally indicated virginity, and lifting the veil by the man symbolized both the consummation of the marriage that would take place later and his taking possession of the woman.

DOWN THE AISLE In premodern times, women were officially and legally considered the property of their closest male relatives and had few rights and little independence. The origin of the cherished tradition in which a father walks his daughter down the aisle to the waiting prospective husband is rooted in the ownership of women. The “giving” of the daughter to the groom represents the transfer of male authority over her.

FLOWERS, CAKE AND THE GARTER Because weddings were initially equally about property rights and fertility (need for heirs), many of the customs derive from fertility motifs. The bouquet, for example, contains flowers today. Flowers were always symbols of fertility. Though some early women carried foul-smelling herbs to ward off the evil spirits! Throwing the garter literally came from the practice of friends following the newly wed couple to their bedchamber and taking turns removing items of clothing from the pair. Likewise, the wedding cake was originally multiple small cakes made of wheat that were broken over the head of the bride. Why? Again, it was intended to ensure fertility and to symbolize the groom’s authority over her.

THE RING Finally, the wedding ring, a symbol of eternal love — even though love did not become the basis for marriage until the much later. The ancients believed that the third finger of the left hand contained a vein that led directly to heart and so initiated the custom of wearing the ring there.

Fade to Black Close your eyes, and open your mouth. Heighten your senses with Dining in the Dark experience

LOUISE HENDRY CHIEF FOODIE

The night the lights went out: Get a good look, because when you sit down in this room at Market 17, you won’t see a thing. Submitted photo

We all know the saying “we eat with our eyes,” but of course we eat with other senses, too. The taste and smell of a dish create the flavor memories we treasure, but the sound, such as a fresh spring pea pod snapping or the sizzle of a grilling steak, also adds to the complete dining experience. If you turn off one sense, such as sight, the other senses are enhanced. Market 17 in Fort Lauderdale offers a “Dining in the Dark” experience, which makes all the senses sing. Brother and sister Aaron and Kirsta Grauberger own the eatery at 1850 SE 17th St. In the kitchen is Chef Lauren DeShields, a protégée of Dean James Max, a James Beard Award winner, and up-and-

The joy of dining in the dark is that you don’t know what you are being served, making dinner the ultimate guessing game.

coming Miami superstar Paula DaSilva. DeShields creates “wine country cuisine” with organic seasonal ingredients. While on vacation in Europe a couple of years ago, DeShields visited a Dining in the Dark restaurant in Amsterdam and brought home this unique and enlightening concept to Market 17. Adventurous diners can chose to have four to eight courses with or without wine pairings in the restaurant’s special dark room. The joy of dining in the dark is that you don’t know what you are being served, making dinner the ultimate guessing game. Guests are instructed to disclose any food restrictions, allergies or dislikes when making the reservation. To minimize accidents, stemless glasses are used, and waiters use night-vision goggles to navigate the room. Diners are encouraged to forget the silverware and use their hands to incorporate touch and texture. This can be messy, but it’s one of those rare occasions where fun intertwines with fine dining. DeShields’ emphasis on fresh food and farm-to-table dining means that the menu changes daily. Diners can indulge in housecured charcuterie, Meyer lemon-butterpoached Maine lobster with English pea and mint couscous, or take a walk on the wild

side with cornmeal-crusted pigtails or grilled Okeechobee ostrich fillet.

Dinner lasts about two hours, and every sensual moment is packed with taste, touch, feel and sound. By focusing on every element of a bite — sans sight — food seems to tastes better. Dining in the dark “opens your eyes” to the distractions of ingredients and how something looks. It also helps eliminate multitasking, eye contact and texting to help you focus solely on the food. Simply put, Dining in the Dark teaches people to taste and savor. Dinner starts around $75 per person. For more information, call Market 17 at 954-8355507.

TABLETOP TIMEWARP 20th century dishes get a modern update By Louise Hendry Although some retro recipes are best left in the 20th century, it seems the recession and an uncertain future has made us turn to the nostalgia and safety of our favorite homecooked foods. Luckily there is a place for those who yearn for a taste of the past. At Whole Foods in Fort Lauderdale, Lifestyle Center Specialist Melanie Stewart guides patrons back to simpler times with Retro Recipes, a monthly themeddinner class. Inspired by her extensive collection of more than 800 retro cookbooks, Stewart makes food a history lesson. “I find that when I ‘m reading an old cookbook or magazine, I get so excited by the information and ideas. I often say, ‘Wow, so that’s where they got that idea from,’” she said. “You can’t believe how circular the world of recipe ideas is until you read many, many years’ worth of recipes and magazines.” Some often associate retro recipes with multicolored and multilayered dips and neon

Retro redux: 21 Club’s Chicken Hash Jello molds, but Stewart’s recipes are taken from popular dining establishments and cookbooks from the 20th century. One such dinner put the spotlight on the recipes of Michael Lomonaco, the former chef of 21 Club, a Manhattan landmark for the culinary and socially

privileged. What opened in 1929 as a speakeasy became a famous hangout for the Hollywood elite in the mid-20th century. The restaurant is still open today, with wallet-draining entrée prices that range from $34 to $48. For the affordable class price of $15 to

$20, food fans can take this hour-and-a-half class where Stewart prepares the meal while explaining the history of the dish. Sip some wine as Stewart details her own culinary journey from self-taught cook to executive and personal chef. The first course was mind-altering goatcheese stuffed poblano pepper with the unique twist of currants mixed into the filling — a perfect starter. That was followed by the main course: a creamy chicken hash, a 21 Clubsignature dish that is all about the butter, cream and calories. Served with rice pilaf, the “hash” is the culinary equivalent of a hug from Grandma. But Grandma would be disappointed if we didn’t have our greens, so Stewart prepared braised kale with garlic and red wine, one of the night’s highlights. To finish off the meal, it doesn’t get better than traditional rice pudding, a life-changing concoction that had whipped cream folded into the cooled pudding, garnished with cherries that had been rehydrated in port wine. Stewart made sure this wasn’t the only time to try these dishes, as she gives each student the recipes to take home. For more information, visit WholeFoodsMarket.com.

Delectable Collectibles Collector eats up culinary treasure through extensive cookbook collection BY LOUISE HENDRY MELANIE STEWART Age: 48 Profession: Culinary instructor at Whole Foods Market, Fort Lauderdale. Hometown: Fairfield, Conn. Collection: 895 cookbooks and counting

HOW DID YOU BEGIN COLLECTING? I began collecting cookbooks seriously about 15 years ago. I used to collect records (I have approximately 3,000 of those). I found that too many people were on the hunt for these records, and they were becoming scarce and expensive. I shifted my focus to cookbooks because I love old things. Old books, magazines, advertisements. My cookbook collecting really began in earnest, when some of my friends took me to Just Books in Tampa. I found a 1963 edition of Larousse Gastronomique for $15. The 1963 edition is the first English language edition of that book. From that moment on, I was hooked. It was my mission to seek out as many cool, old cookbooks as I could find. WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR COOKBOOKS? I buy books at thrift stores, flea markets, used-book stores, estate sales, library sales, and occasionally friends buy them for me. I buy online sometimes. It’s much more fun to find a great book in a thrift store or flea market.

FAVORITE BOOKS: My most treasured books are a collection of volumes from Time/Life. A series called Foods of the World. The writing is excellent, and the information and recipes are fresh and very contemporary. Many great chefs and food writers contributed to the volumes: James Beard, Eliot Elisofon, Waverly Root and many others. I also have the Time/Life’s The Good Cook series. MOST VALUABLE BOOK: One of the most valuable books I have is one I bought for $10. I’ve seen it fetch up to $200. It’s called Food is a Four Letter Word. It is written by Eliot Elisofon with a forward by Gypsy Rose Lee. It’s a very tongue-in-cheek volume on global cuisine. It was written in 1948. MOST UNUSUAL BOOK: I have quite a few unusual cookbooks. A couple of them leap to mind. One is Bridget’s Organic Cookbook written in 1973. The author, Bridget, published many books and even a calendar in the 1970s. All of her books feature her full figure au natural. Yes, Bridget cooks all her recipes totally nude! I had to have this book. Another unusual book in my collection is called The Pyromaniac’s Cookbook. All of the recipes in the book are set ablaze!

Q&A with a

Sexpert Our sex-expert answers questions on sex relations.

Q

I’ve been married for 17 years, and there’s just no romance anymore. Because of this, I’ve become consumed with reading those tawdry romance novels. What can I do to get my husband to be more loving and adventurous? Marla J., Cooper City A: Dear Future Naughty Chamber Maid – I can help with adding some adventure to the bedroom or maybe some other rooms. Why not take what you have learned from those tawdry books and apply it to real life? Role-playing is a fun and sexy way to add a little spice to a humdrum sex life. Try playing out one of your favorite naughty scenes from one of the books. Since the scenario is not real life, it could make it easier for each of you to ask for what you want in bed. Lead by example, and show him what you’re looking for in the romance department.

Q: I just started dating again after my divorce, and the man I’m seeing wants to know how many partners I’ve had in my life. I don’t feel comfortable telling him how many, but I like him and don’t want to jeopardize this new relationship. – Stacy A., Boca Raton A: Dear Double-Edged Sword – Don’t answer the question. When it comes to “the number,” there is never a right answer. Instead, try something like, “As we are both adults, we can assume we had sex with someone other than each other. The number of people does not matter; only the fact that I am now with you matters.” And leave it at that.

17.4 years: Average age a woman is when she has sex for the first time.

If he can’t deal, chances are he is not the right guy for you. Q: I told my guy friend that I had feelings for him, even though he had a girlfriend. Now he’s single and flirts with me occasionally. But he also seems to avoid me a lot of the time. Why is he sending these mixed signals? Brenda P., Lauderhill A: Dear Oh No – I am going to say what I think your gut is already telling you. He is not into you. If a guy is interested in someone, he will let her know. What I want to know is why you’re pining over a guy who is clearly not available. Next time, focus on a guy who can give you his all, not someone who is in a

relationship. Q: If I’m dating someone new, how many dates should I go on before having sex? Phyllis S., Hollywood A: Dear Let’s Get It On – This is the age-old female question, and the truth is: There is no right answer. For me, it is usually after three solid dates; that means dinner and some sort of daytime date. It also means that I feel comfortable with my date. My one true advice on this topic is to listen to your gut. If you feel ready, go for it. If something feels off, chances are it is. Also you should never feel pressured to have sex. Sex is fun and a great way to express yourself,

INTIMACIES not something you have to do. Q: I’ve been hanging with this guy a lot, and we’ve spent plenty of alone time together — but he hasn’t made a move. Since he has had plenty of opportunities, does this mean he just wants to be friends? A: Dear Miss Opportunity – First, what opportunities has he had? What I have learned in my many years of dating is that men are oblivious when it comes to women and sex. This means that unless you walked up to him, grabbed him and said, “Here we go,” or unless your guy is a mind reader, he has no clue you want the relationship to go further unless you tell him. If you communicate your desires, and he still doesn’t act on the opportunities, move on and find someone who will.

Q: I’ve been with my husband for 10 years, and

I recently caught him looking at online porn. We don’t have sex often because I’m just not that into it, so I feel like it’s my fault he’s resorted to porn. What would you do in this situation? Suze L., Coral Springs A: Dear News Flash Resorted to porn…oh please. Chances are he has been watching or looking at porn since he was 13. You just happened to catch him. The real issue here is your lack of sexual desire. It is important for you and your husband to get it on. Sex is one of the ways we express love in a long-term relationship. Whatever the reason you’re not feeling sexual, which I know there can be several, it is important that you look into them. Oh, and take a cue from the hubby — maybe a little self-pleasure will help you refuel that sexual energy.

I’d feel this familiar dampness between my legs, reach behind me and know there was a giant bloodstain on the back of whatever I was wearing. It was the most mortifying feeling on Earth to know this crimson tide was now visible for all to see like a scarlet badge of embarrassment. For years, I kept a jacket within arm’s length so I could wrap it around my waist to camouflage my period stain. But this wasn’t just any period stain. It was the blood that refused to stop flowing for 10 days a month because a giant fibroid decided to take up residence in my uterus. No matter how many pads I put on, it still went through. I would get up and go to work, interview celebrities and smile like everything was fine, but it wasn’t. This unwanted invader caused me so many health problems for three solid years, robbing my body of nutrients, making me anemic, depleting my energy and giving me

HEALTH

agonizing cramps that felt like a truck was driving over my midsection. Not to mention the pain of embarrassment when I’d ruin antique furniture and way too many designer pants. Why did I go through this for so long? My doctors reassured me this was “normal,” and I just learned how to cope, making sure I always had plenty of pads, wore the right clothing and just prayed I wouldn’t have a public incident. Then I finally found a physician who listened to me, looked closer and confirmed that all I was going through was in fact not normal. I was thrilled to know that I no longer had to endure this internal menace. Dr. Gostal Arcelin in Boca Raton removed my basketball-sized uterine fibroid tumor late last year, and it was the best decision I ever made. I feel as if my energy is restored, my periods are normal, and I no longer have to fear that time of the month. I am a happy, healthy woman again. All it took was a doctor who

listened, knew I was needlessly suffering and finally helping me to do something about it. As I started to tell my story to others, it turns out there are millions out there who are going through this. Studies estimate that 25 percent of women have uterine fibroids; and many don’t even know they have them. Most of the time these benign growths are harmless, not causing any problems. But some women with fibroids suffer with anemia, pelvic pain, prolonged periods, and backaches from these noncancerous tumors. There are even women who have fertility or pregnancy problems because of these growths. My advice to women who have prolonged and heavy periods, cramps or pregnancy issues should see a doctor to confirm if fibroids may be the cause. Don’t ignore your body’s signals. Life is too short spend half the month with a jacket tied around your waist.

Facts What are fibroids? They are smooth-muscle growths that can grow inside or outside of the uterus. Fibroids can be as small as a pea or as large as a small melon. Although fibroids are called “tumors,” they are not cancer.

Symptoms They may cause irregular bleeding, abdominal swelling, pain during intercourse, lower abdominal and pelvic discomfort or pain, and increased uterine cramping before and during menstrual periods.

Fibroids also can make it hard for you to get pregnant. Sometimes fibroids can cause problems with pregnancy, labor or delivery, including miscarriage and premature birth. Some women suffer no symptoms.

Diagnosis Usually, fibroids are found by abdominal or pelvic examination or pelvic ultrasound. Sometimes MRIs or CT scans are used.

Treatment Nonsurgical treatments for fibroids include hormones and pain relief medicines. Surgical treatments for fibroids in-

clude hysterectomy (removal of fibroid and uterus) and myomectomy (removal of fibroid leaving uterus). Hysterectomy is usually recommended when the fibroids are causing severe problems, when they have grown rapidly or when the fibroids are large. Another option is laser surgery. The doctor uses a high-intensity light to remove small fibroids. In some instances, it may be possible to remove it during a laparoscopy. Or the doctor may put a thin tube called a hysteroscope with a laser through the vagina and into the uterus. These are usually outpatient procedures. Dental Implants and Laser Periodontics 954 603-8731 Do you suffer from bleeding gums, loose teeth or an unattractive smile? Our practice of Periodontics has advanced and changed over the years. In 1976 we were primarily involved in the treatment of periodontal infections of the gum and bone around teeth. This is still done today, and many times with our Laser, which may involve no anesthesia, no cutting and no stitches. Today we are also involved with cosmetic procedures correcting the deformities of short teeth, or gummy smiles and correcting the deficiencies of gum, or long teeth, by root coverage procedures. We even use our Laser to treat tongue-tie problems on newborn infants, to aid in nursing. Do you have one or more missing teeth or loose dentures? I have been placing Dental Implants since 1985. My goal, as a Periodontist, is to help my patients keep their teeth in good health, functioning well and with good esthetics for the rest of their lives. However, there are times when teeth cannot be kept. We treat patients who are missing one, some or all of their teeth. These may be areas of recent tooth loss or teeth may have been missing for decades. With the advent of modern techniques, all patients can be candidates for dental implants. We have technology today, which enables patients to have an implant placed with provisional teeth the very same day. We can even convert a patient’s removable denture into a fixed restoration in just one day! Are you nervous to go to the dentist? IV sedation is available for all our patients. You can “sleep” through your treatment. Do you have serious medical conditions? There is a significant relationship between periodontal infections and medical diseases, including, those of the heart, lungs, kidneys, pancreatic cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and low birth weight babies. Do you have financial concerns about your dental care? All people have an opportunity to learn what is available for them. We are offering complimentary, completely free appointments for an examination, digital x-rays, panoramic films and consultations. Financing is available for up to 7 years! In February we celebrated the 36th anniversary of our practice. Our office has been in the same location since 1976. I look forward to meeting you. You can meet us on the web at www.drklevine.com.

When you buy from a small mom or pop business, you are “not” helping a CEO buy a third vacation home. You are helping a little girl get dance lessons, a little boy get his team jersey, a mom or dad put food on the table, a family pay a mortgage, or a student pay for college.

Our customers are our shareholders and they are the ones we strive to make happy.

FDA Approved Fat Zapping machine

TARGETING THE “TROUBLE ZONES”

By Stacy Reed

Living in Florida certainly has its advantages. But the “sun and fun” climate, trips to the beach and an outdoors lifestyle means go-to wardrobe choices that include shorts, tanks, mini’s, and, of course, swimsuits. And with those choices comes the desire (some would say pressure) to look good in them. Even though many Floridians maintain their health and looks through diet and exercise, most people are genetically predisposed to store fat in the hips, thighs and belly. And it’s stubborn fat that stays put, no matter how much they diet or exercise, but now there’s a new weapon on the war against fat: LipoLaser. Not for the obese or seriously overweight, LipoLaser is for people who understand the value of diet and exercise but need help losing fat in these troubled zones.

Non-Surgical Liposuction (“Lipolaser”) The Zerona LipoLaser is a body-sculpting procedure that is designed to remove fat and contour the body without surgery. It works by means of low-level laser, which is FDA Approved for body circumference reduction, that penetrates the skin safely. There’s no surgery, no needles, and no downtime. The laser works by targeting and liquefying non-active adipose (fat) cells in the body. The fat is then removed as waste through the lymphatic system. For more about the technical side, visit www.bestnewbody.com.

As Just Seen on Dr. Oz

LOSE UP TO 9 INCHES IN JUST 2 WEEKS*

Getting the treatment The low level laser has no thermal component, so it doesn’t feel hot or even warm. Each treatment lasts 40 minutes, and since there is no recovery time, youcanhaveatreatment and then go straight to work, go for a workout, or do anything else you want to do.

Results - Lost inches • Many individuals lose 1”-2” inches from their abdomen after the first treatment!! • Women can drop one or two dress sizes in as little as four weeks. • Call 954-251-0730 or 561-922-9931 for your appointment. You will be glad you did.
