Celebrating Seven Years of Second Chances Ariana was 2 years old when she was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy – a rare heart condition. During her teen years she started to experience symptoms of heart failure. “We determined she would need a mechanical heart device to get her strong enough for a transplant,” says Maryanne Chrisant, MD, Medical Director of Heart Failure, Cardiomyopathy and Transplant.

Ariana is one of 40 children who have received successful heart transplants since our Pediatric Heart Transplant Program was launched seven years ago.

In the summer of 2017, Ariana became the ﬁrst child at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital to be implanted with a ventricular assist device, called the HeartWare. Two months later Ariana’s family got the call at 3am. “They said they had a heart,” her mom Adriana recalled.

Miami Children’s Museum debuts ‘Lion Guard’ exhibit An exhibit based on Disney Junior’s hit series, “The Lion Guard,” opened at Miami Children’s Museum on Jan. 27. The Lion Guard continues the story of “The Lion King” with Kion, the secondborn cub of Simba and Nala, and his adventures protecting the Pride Lands. The exhibit, developed by Miami Children’s Museum in collaboration with Disney Junior, will be on display through early September, according to a news release. It will then travel to other children’s museums nationwide. Designed to teach social and selfdevelopment, problem solving, creative

thinking and culture, the exhibit will take guests on an adventure through the Pride Lands. Children will have the opportunity to train in the Lion Guard’s secret lair, go on special missions, and discover and learn about the African savanna and the animals that live there. The Little Lion Guard area will give younger visitors activities in exploration, creativity and skill building. The Miami Children’s Museum is at 980 MacArthur Causeway on Watson Island in Miami. Florida Renaissance Festival to celebrate 26th year FAMILY DESIGNS The Museum of Discovery and Science is hosting IKEA Design Nation and FAU Self Driven Team weekend Feb. 17-19. Museum visitors can test their skills with hands-on, friendly competitions and interactive activities from noon to 4 p.m. Families will be invited to compete to build a table that can hold the most weight and construct a rollercoaster and keep the passengers strapped in so they cannot fall out. Give the kids a living history lesson with the Florida Renaissance Festival, which opens at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach on Feb. 10 and runs every Saturday and Sunday (plus President’s Day) through March 25. The festival reenacts Europe’s Renaissance period with food, crafts, demonstrations, games of chance and skill,

rides, knight battles, a crafts village with more than 100 merchants and artisans, and hundreds of live performers, including sword fighters, minstrels and magicians at the park at 401 S. Powerline Road in Deerfield Beach. Each weekend has a theme, and on the President’s Day holiday, kids under 12, seniors 65 and older, active military and teachers with I.D. get in free until noon. Regular ticket prices are $21, or $9 for ages 6-11. The Renaissance Festival also has a school day program for class field trips and an official Scout patch program – a 4-5 hour program that gives scouts a detailed look at life in the past with hands-on demonstrations, crafts, shows and other activities. PALM BEACH COUNTY NEWS TOYS INVITED TO FREE "MEET THE MUSIC" CONCERT The Florida Intergenerational Orchestra invites families and their stuffed animals to a free concert, "Meet the Music," on Feb. 25 at O’Shea Hall at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 22094 Lyons Road in Boca Raton. The concert will focus on teaching children about the orchestra and participating in the program, according to a news release. Festival to fill Mizner Park with art Art from across the country will fill Mizner Park during the 32nd annual Museum Art Festival on Feb. 3-4. Admission and parking in the garages at Mizner Park are free. Genetic screening can help guide pregnancy decisions BY SAIMA AFTAB, MD

f you are considering a pregnancy, pre-conception genetic counseling can help guide your decision. Today, you and your spouse can be tested for more than 50 genetic conditions that could have a potential health impact on your child. Cystic fibrosis, a life-threatening disorder of the lungs and other organs, is one of the genetic-related diseases that could affect your child if either you or your spouse is a carrier. Many other conditions occur most frequently in people with certain ethnic backgrounds. For instance, African-Americans have a higher risk of sickle cell anemia, a genetic disease that changes the shape of red blood cells, than other ethnic groups. Since genes come in pairs — one from the mother and one from the father — it’s important for you and your spouse to be screened for possible issues. While both of you may be healthy with no signs of a disease, you could both be a carrier of a gene mutation that you could pass on to a child. If both parents have the same abnormal or mutated gene, your child could be born with a condition like Tay-Sachs disease, which is found most frequently among European Jewish families (Ashkenazi), Irish and French Canadians. Fortunately, an ongoing pre-conception screening initiative in the nation’s Jewish community has greatly reduced the incidence of Tay-Sachs disease. A decade ago, doctors could only offer pre-pregnancy screening for nine conditions. That number has grown steadily since 2007, so you should by tested at a facility that offers a full panel of screening tests, as well as genetic counseling to help you understand the results. If you have already been tested in the past, you need to make sure your panel is up to date.

ISSUES TO CONSIDER If you are wondering about pre-conception genetic screening, here are some issues to consider. • Peace of mind. Would you sleep better at night during pregnancy, knowing your 14

baby was not at risk for certain genetic diseases? • Learning about your own heritage. Pre-conception screening can provide insights about your own genetic background. Because recessive genes can be passed along for many generations without being noticed, you might be surprised at the findings. • Family medical history. Many serious medical problems have a genetic component. Therefore, you and your spouse should review your parents’ and grandparents’ medical histories whenever possible. Be sure to share this information with your doctor before or during pregnancy. • Past pregnancies. If you have had two or more miscarriages or a stillbirth, you should talk with a genetic counselor before trying again. It’s possible that an inherited condition could be the cause of the problem. • Medical conditions. If a would-be mother has diabetes, heart disease or other chronic health problems, you should discuss them with your doctor and genetic counselor. There may be steps you can take to reduce the risks of pregnancy.

• Mother’s age. Mothers in their late 30s and 40s have a higher risk of having a baby with certain genetic conditions than younger women. Pre-conception screening, along with prenatal testing during pregnancy, can help you identify and address those risks. If you are planning a pregnancy, there are many other health and lifestyle issues to keep in mind. Eating healthy foods, getting regular exercise and stopping smoking are steps that would be good for you and your baby. If you are taking medications or nutritional supplements, talk with your doctor to be sure they are necessary. Finally, consider pre-conception genetic screening to identify inherited conditions that could pose a risk, so you can increase your chances of a normal pregnancy and a healthy baby.

Preparing your child for a dental visit BY DENISE MORRISON YEARIAN

ane and Drew Tamassia love going to the dentist. They think it is fun. Perhaps it’s words like “tickle toothbrush” and “sugar bug remover” that make these preschoolers giggle. Maybe it’s the mini-movie theater or Disney decorations that draw them in. “I think they like going because I started them early and chose someone who knows how to work with children,” said Suzanne Tamassia, whose own childhood dental fears drove her to find a dentist who works with specifically with children. “Getting children in at an early age is key,” said Pediatric Dentist Lawrence Louie. “I like to see them when the first tooth erupts. It gives me a chance to get a good look at the child’s mouth and lets me share oral health care and nutrition information with the parents.” Jennifer Luzader, a pediatric dental hygienist, agreed. “We recommend children have their first dental exam by their first birthday, and their first dental cleaning by age 2.” Even before that first appointment, there are things parents can do to prepare their child for their visit “Use books, videos and role play at home,” Luzader said. “Talk with your child using good, positive terms, and remind him how important it is to take care of his teeth and eat the right kinds of foods.” That is what Susan Magasiny did. “Before Jake’s first appointment, we talked about how the dentist was a doctor for his teeth and that to keep them healthy, he needed to have check ups,” said the mother of two. “I told him the dentist was going to look at his teeth, count them and maybe take a picture. It was no big deal.” “I remember sitting at home roleplaying with Jane,” Tamassia said. “I would say, ‘Open your mouth and let me see your teeth,’ then I would pretend to be the dentist. She liked that.” Role-playing prepared Jane for that first visit because when she went she knew just what to expect. “When a child comes in, we try to

make it a fun experience,” Luzader said. “They get to pick out things like fluoride flavor, sunglasses for eye protection, and a new toothbrush and floss. Then we go through each step of what we are going to do, first on their fingers then in their mouths. We count their teeth, scale those that are covered with plaque and tartar, and then polish. We finish with a fluoride treatment and have the dentist come in for an exam.” Louie talks children through the procedures, too. “We call it, ‘Tell. Show. Do.’ First we tell them what we are going to do, show them on our hands, then do it. That way there are no surprises.” Even without so-called “surprises,” sometimes anxiety sets in. “Crying through the first two years is very expected, even at 3,” Luzader said. “One way to ward off tears is with distraction. We have puppets we use and will talk with children on their level to gain their confidence. We also try to make it fun: ‘What kind of animal is down your throat today?’ Even when children come in crying, 95 percent of them leave with a smile.” “What is really important is that parents not relay any fears they have about going to the dentist,” Louie said. “Every once in a while, I see where parents have elaborated on what happened to them, and it comes through to the children.” On occasion, dental emergencies arise which cannot be avoided. “One week after Jake’s first appointment, he fell into a picnic table and had a severe dental injury. His gum was pushed

In the months to follow Jake had to return several times so the dentist could evaluate the situation. “I started to prep him about losing his tooth early, which he did about six months later,” she said. “But through it all, Jake built trust and confidence in the dentist.” So much so, if you asked him today he would tell you he looks forward to his dental visits. His mother does, too. “What I appreciate most about our dental practice is that they have given me tools to teach my children preventa-

tive dentistry,” Magasiny said. Tamassia agreed. “I like how our dentist takes a sincere interest in children,” she said. “Everything is catered to them. There’s an indoor climbing playhouse, video room and lots of books. They even get to takehome a goodie bag and report card.” “The goal is to have the child enjoy his first, second, third, whatever visit it is,” Luzader said. “Because if he does, he’ll want to return again and again.”

CREATE ANTICIPATION As the birthday approaches, build anticipation by talking about it and planning what the day will hold. You can create a special countdown by making a paper chain and tearing off one chain per day or even just counting down the 22

DOWN ON THE FARM Some adventures are so great, they need the great outdoors, and Bedner’s Farm offers just that. DON’T BE ALLERGIC TO VALENTINE’S DAY February, the most romantic month of the year, is here again. We want to sail the wave of spreading the love by giving you tips on how to avoid its lurking dangers if you suffer from allergies or asthma. Let’s celebrate the month of affection by being an “allergic hero” for your sweetheart, significant other and friends.

ALLERGIC TO KISSING

While for someone the question may be “will he or she kiss me?” for an allergic patient the troubling dilemma is “what did he or she eat?” in other words, it’s the case of when a kiss is not just a kiss. For people allergic to food, cross contamination is one ever lurking danger. Allergens, especially the protein of the food that triggers the reaction, can linger in hands as well as in saliva, even in the event one is smitten at the idea that behind that frog lays the Prince. Precautions and open communication can save you, at least, the use of epinephrine or even more, a trip to the ER. The same recommendation needs to be used for restaurant personnel when making reservations, since that day can become busy and staffers forgetful.

Crafts for the Chinese New Year

BY DENISE MORRISON YEARIAN our family’s New Year celebration may be over, but the Chinese New Year party is just getting

started. The Chinese New Year is a 15-day festival with traditional games, gifts, parades and feasts. It begins on the first full moon after Jan. 21, so this year it starts Feb. 16. You can attend one of the festivals in South Florida to celebrate, or enjoy the festivities at home with these crafts and activities:

LION MASK The Lion Dance is a popular New Year tradition meant to drive out evil and usher in good luck. Items needed: Large, sturdy paper plate; white cardstock; pencil; scissors; three small paper plates; brown, orange and yellow tempera paint; sponge, cut into three pieces; black and red markers; craft stick; stapler. On the inside of the paper plate, draw two 1-inch circles for eye holes; cut these out. On the cardstock, draw two triangle ears, each with a 1.5-inch base; cut these out and set aside. Place a small amount of brown, orange and yellow paint on each of the three smaller plates. Slightly dampen sponges, then dip each one into a different colored paint and dab onto the backside of the paper plate mask to create a textured look for the lion’s face. Also paint the cardstock triangles. When the mask is dry, draw an inverted triangle with red marker to represent the nose and make whiskers and a mouth with black marker. Create spiral curly cues around the outer edges of the mask to represent the lion’s mane. Staple triangle ears to the lion’s mask and a craft stick handle to the bottom of the mask.

ruler; pencil; scissors; glue; glitter. Measure and cut the construction paper to be 6- by 8-inches. Place paper on the table with the long side parallel to your body. Fold the long end closest to you up 1-inch and glue the two outside edges in place. Fold the right side of the paper toward the middle and glue the long and short edges in place. Fold the left side of the paper over it to create a tri-fold pocket (will resemble a reading glass case) and glue those edges in place. Let dry. Write "Hung Bao" (which means "Lucky Money Envelope") across the front. Trace over the letters with glue, sprinkle with glitter, shake off excess and let dry. Then fill with the treasure of your choice.

Items needed: Construction paper, two red, one yellow; scissors; stapler; ruler; pencil; marker. Measure and cut off one-inch from the short end of the yellow paper and discard. Roll the remaining yellow paper into a cylinder shape and secure with staples. This will be the lantern light. Fold the red paper in half lengthwise. Starting at one end, draw a series of lines across the paper that measure 1-inch apart. Lines should start at the fold and end approximately 1-inch from the opposite end. Cut through these lines. Open the red paper, wrap it around the yellow cylinder, making sure the top and bottom edges line up; staple it in place. Measure and cut a one-inch strip from a different piece of red paper. Write "Gung Hay Fat Choy" (which means "Happy New Year") on the strip then staple it across the upper end of the lantern to become the handle.

FRIED RICE No New Year’s celebration would be complete without a little local flavor. Authenticate your dining experience by sitting on the floor, sipping hot tea and eating with chopsticks. Items needed: 3 Tablespoons oil; 2 eggs (slightly beaten); 3 cups cooked rice; chopped green onions; 1 cup peas; 1 can sliced water chestnuts (drained); soy sauce; knife; pan; spoon. Heat oil in pan over a stove. Add eggs and begin to stir. As the eggs begin to cook, mix in rice, onions, peas and water chestnuts. Add a dash of soy sauce and continue stirring until thoroughly heated.

LUCKY MONEY Sometime during the celebration, children receive a red envelope that contains money, and on occasion, small treats. You can make and decorate your own envelope and then fill it. Items needed: Red construction paper; 44

Mind your manners How to teach social skills to children

eaching children manners provides them with the social skills needed to be successful in life. Although the refinement of these skills may take years to master, if parents are deliberate and consistent, their efforts will pay off. “Between the ages of 2 and 5, children are most receptive to learning codes of conduct because they have a strong desire to please their parents, and they’re soaking up everything in their environment,” said Parent Educator Chris Buker. “Start with simple courtesies and expand your expectations as they grow.” That’s what Sherry Brown has done. When her boys began pointing and asking for things around age 2, she introduced phrases such as “Please” and “Thank you.” She tackled table manners, too. “I started teaching them they had to wait until everyone got to the table to eat,” Brown said of Zachary, now age 6, and Hunter, two-and-a-half. “They also have to ask to be excused, and they must clear their dishes. Chewing with their mouths open and talking while eating has been addressed, too. Zachary is doing pretty good at this; with Hunter it’s a constant conversation.” What’s important is to be specific about your expectations. “Instead of saying, ‘Mind your manners,’ tell them, ‘When we go out for dinner, I want you to ...’ and state exactly what you want to see,” said Carl Chenkin, a child psychologist. “This removes any ambiguity in your child’s mind and gives him opportunities to succeed.” Role playing may also help. “It’s a fun way to introduce a variety of social skills,” Buker said. “Use play phones to teach telephone etiquette. Let kids practice greeting and shaking hands with their stuffed animals and dolls. Before going out for a nice dinner, make a special meal with good dishes at home. Encourage your child to get dressed up; then play out the scenario so she knows what to expect.” Brown’s boys have found this to be beneficial. “If there’s a situation they are unfamil-

iar with, we coach them ahead of time on what to expect,” she said. “Just recently, we celebrated my grandfather’s 97th birthday, and there were a lot of relatives the kids hadn’t met. Before leaving home, we reminded them to shake people’s hands when they were introduced, not interrupt conversations and say their ‘Please’s and ‘Thank you’s.” Children’s books that focus on manners can reinforce refinement skills, as can television and movies. This has been Amy Riddell’s experience. While watching TV one day, her four-and-a-half yearold son Nicholas pointed out a scene where a group of kids was having a food fight. “He said, ‘Mommy, they aren’t supposed to throw food; that’s bad manners!’ And it started up a great conversation,” Riddell said. “He’s pointed out situations in public, too. Just recently we were in a restaurant, and another child was having a bad moment. Nicholas said, ‘Mommy, that boy is standing in his seat and yelling and throwing food; he’s hurting my ears!’ I said, ‘You’re right. That’s bad manners.’ ” “When you see others displaying either good or bad manners, it can be used as a teaching tool,” Chenkin said. “Just make sure you don’t contrast another child’s good manners with your child’s

bad behavior: ‘Look at how polite that child is. Why can’t you be like that?’ This is belittling and can be counterproductive.” Even after he has been grounded in social graces, your child may need a few gentle reminders. When he forgets to use eating utensils, offer a one-word cue such as “fork.” If he’s picking his nose say, “Would you like a tissue?” If this doesn’t bring the desired response, wait and discuss it in private so as not to shame or embarrass him. “You want your child to feel good about these new skills, so rather than lecturing him about what he isn’t doing, offer positive reinforcement when he does display good manners. Verbal praise, a hug or a pat on the back goes a long way,” Buker said. Riddell does this. When she joined her son for a recent classroom party, another mother privately pointed out Nicholas’ well-mannered behavior. “He was sitting there with his hands folded, quietly encouraging the other kids to settle down,” Riddell said. “When the students got up to get their food, I told him, ‘You were being good and doing what the teacher told you to do. What kids wish their parents knew about social media BY ANA HOMAYOUN, SPECIAL TO THE WASHINGTON POST

hen teens were asked, recently, if they believe their parents know “a little” or “nothing” about what they do or say online, or even what social-media apps and sites they use, more than a quarter of them said “a little.” After visiting schools around the country, it seems to me they’re likely giving their parents too much credit. When I ask audiences at parent education nights how many have ever used Snapchat, Musical.ly or Tbh, few if any hands go up. I’ve interviewed middle school and high school students about secrets they wish parents knew about their online use, but don’t necessarily want to tell them. These are three of the secrets students shared: “When you take away one device at night, you might not realize how many devices we still have with us.” Access to smartphones has shifted communication for tweens and teens, and self-regulation can be difficult. The fear of missing out (FOMO) can create an overwhelming desire to be connected — in fact, according to 2015 Pew Research, 94 percent of teens go online daily, which isn’t surprising, and 24 percent of teens feel as though they are online constantly. Encouraging kids to find effective ways to self-regulate is sometimes about getting their buy-in — that is, encouraging them to reflect on the impact their daily online habits are having on their personal, academic and extracurricular goals. “Many of us have a fake Instagram account.” A parent recently told me she had full control over her ninth-grade son’s online interactions. She explained that he didn’t even know the password for his Instagram account, and that if he wanted to post something, he had to go through her. I quietly surmised that her son might be hiding some of his online activities from her. If kids are online, parents are usually more effective acting as mentors than as micromanagers. Having open-ended conversations rather 48

than wielding authoritative control enables kids to build the critical thinking skills needed to make smarter decisions online and in real life. For some kids, a finsta (”fake” Instagram) or a rinsta (”real” Instagram) might be where they feel they can share their raw, authentic feelings, even though they don’t always realize that anything shared online has the potential for a greater audience, amplified consequences or longer shelf-life. It’s up to parents to find a way in, not through coercion, but through conversation. “If we are passionate or angry about something, we take it to social media.” Young people want their opinions to be heard. Many tweens and teens find their online communities are engaging, interactive and responsive. A message or Snapchat sent to a friend can result in an instant reply, and something posted to a group chat or online profile can create the opportunity for communitylevel conversation and engagement. Responses from friends and followers make kids feel heard and listened to (this isn’t, of course, much different for adults). At the same time, we know that teens’ and tweens’ brains are still developing and that kids often lack impulse control and the ability to understand the long-term consequences of decisions made in moments of anger and frustration. Parents who empathize with the challenges their children face can help them devise smarter, healthier ways to self-filter before posting. And here are several things they’d like their parents to do: “Talk with us about the apps we like to use and why. Most of you have no idea about our world.” One of my students recently told me how a group of nine of her friends from school were using family tracking apps to monitor one another. When she and a few of her friends wanted to hang out or were all in the same place, there would be a continual stream of social pressure, guilt and shame from others who weren’t invited. (”Why aren’t you hanging

out without us? Guess you think you’re too cool for us?”) Her parents had no idea that some of their teen daughter’s friends were essentially stalking her. Ask your kids which apps they spend the most time on (or check their phone’s data usage). Download those apps and spend time learning the ins and outs. “Help us keep an eye on who is following us.” In a world where likes, loves, comments and follower counts have become a barometer for popularity, teens and tweens might find it difficult to turn away potential followers, even when they should. Parents and educators should encourage teens and tweens to curate access to their accounts. “Accept that there are lots of good things on social media — it is not all bad stuff.” Social media isn’t good or bad; it is a new form of communication and language that adults need to learn, because pretending it doesn’t exist generally isn’t a wise approach. When adults express genuine curiosity and compassion about the positive experiences associated with online interactions, kids are more likely to confide in them about the intertwining nature of their online and in-real-life experiences. “Talk with us about sexting and healthy relationships in a way that isn’t awkward.” Tweens and teens face challenges unheard of in previous generations. Some might mistakenly confuse the sending of explicit photos and messages with a level of intimacy that might not exist, and others might not fully understand the long-term social, emotional and legal consequences of sending, sharing and storing explicit photos.
