Good for kids and the community

Most working parents aren’t home when their kids get out of school. There’s a constant need for families to cover the kid-care gap between school ends and when work ends. That’s where after-school programs come in.

School Connection After-school programs provide a safe, structured environment during those few hours between the school bell and work whistle. The best programs give kids the chance to

run, play and be physical as well as homework time and other enrichment.

The research on after-school care is overwhelmingly positive. A child is almost twice as likely to not participate in delinquent behavior such as drug use or gangs when participating in some type of after-school program.

More importantly, school-aged children who participate in after-school programming are 40 percent more likely to be involved in some type of positive after-school activity when they become a teenager.

High-quality after-school programs can help improve academic achievement and increase student attendance and a child’s overall interest in school.

Feeling a stronger connection to school can also help to reduce dropout rates.

Good for All The community also benefits when children are engaged after school. Research has shown that quality after-school programs:

> Reduce juvenile violence and crime > Lower cases of drug use and addiction > Decrease risky behaviors, such as drinking alcohol and smoking, in children

> Reduce teen pregnancies and sexual activity

> Increase a child’s success in school and increase graduation rates

> Keep kids safe from accidents and predators

> Save taxpayers money

The majority of voters agree that spending money on after-school programs is beneficial to the community. Yet the country still falls short on the funding for and availability of quality programs.

When you are looking for an accredited program, seek out those that will stimulate your child. Look for programs where the children stay busy, there is a good staff-to-child ratio, and the course encourages your child to grow emotionally and socially.

The program you choose should be flexible enough to meet the needs of the kids and the community.
