COW STEALS THE SPOTLIGHT IN NEW DISNEY CHRISTMAS SHOW BY SANDY CSIZMAR Has there ever been a Magic Kingdom stage show with this many characters? At one point in the final minutes of “Mickey’s Most Merriest Celebration,” the new show for Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, most of Fantasyland arrives as Minnie shouts “it looks like everybody got my invitation.” This is after group performances by the Fab Five, the Three Caballeros and Toy Story favorites. And arrive they do, all invited by text message to a swinging holiday party, with the castle transformed into a festive home by the magic of Disney projections. The doorbell just keeps ringing during almost 20 minutes of singing, dancing and surprises. Daisy launches into “Text me a Merry Christmas,” 2013’s holiday hit by Straight No Chaser with Kristen Chenoweth, when Donald fails to arrive to the party on time. The other characters on stage start texting their friends to join the fun. Clarabelle Cow steals this show with a dramatic entrance, sans beau Horace Horsecollar, arriving on stage in a sleigh pulled by four reindeer and wearing a shimmery white gown with a giant bow on her head, a boa around her neck. She hasn’t had many feature opportunities in American Disney lore. She’s popular in Italy but is mostly relegated to bit parts in Mickey Mouse shorts in
the U.S. since her 1928 inception, so her inclusion was especially delightful. Clarabelle belted out Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas” along with the show’s lead female singer. And she makes a cowbell joke, too, because we all “need more cowbell.” Some other notable fun: José Carioca belts out an unexpected
treat, a brief rendition of “Deck the Halls” in Spanish, before caballeros Donald and Panchito join him for the 1970s José Feliciano Spanish standard, “Feliz Navidad.” “Mickey’s Most Merriest Celebration” runs four times nightly during Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, through Dec. 22. The holiday castle show will also play during regular park hours Dec. 23-31.
Hollywood event founder sets sights on caroling world record BY HELEN WOLT Christmas Near the Beach, an annual event in Hollywood, will celebrate its 10th anniversary by making an attempt at a world record. The event’s founder, Deena McDaniel, said she is inviting her “closest 2,000 friends” to top the record for the most people caroling. “We could be in The Guinness Book of World Records,” McDaniel said. “You could make history in Hollywood by showing up and singing.” The caroling record attempt will take place as a pre-event to the annual Christmas affair on Dec. 10 in ArtsPark at Young Circle in Hollywood. Vocalists are asked to gather at 2 p.m. The holi-

day happenings are 4 to 9 p.m. “The concept is that door-to-door caroling that many of us did as children. That has kind of been lost,” McDaniel said. “We’re bringing it back and doing so in a South Florida flavor in the beautiful downtown area.” The record that organizers hope to surpass is 1,822 carolers. To qualify, they are adhering closely to the official Guinness regulations. The first rule of caroling is everyone must be registered and counted. At each stop, they all sing one song in unison from the carol sheet. A complete set of rules can be found online at ChristmasNeartheBeach.com. “Simply, we go to 10 businesses and
sing one carol with five minutes between each store,” Mc Daniel said. The easy route takes about half an hour to walk. No choral skill is required. “You just have to make a joyful noise,” she said. More than 7,000 are expected to attend the main event. Music this year features a Latin flair. With Santa’s arrival in a classic car, the Grinch will lead a flash mob in a zumba-style dance. A live nativity scene is also performed.
IF YOU GO Christmas Near the Beach takes place Dec. 10 at ArtsPark, 1 N. Young Circle in Hollywood, 4-9 p.m. Admission is free. Caroling pre-event starts at 2 p.m. To register, visit ChristmasNeartheBeach.com.

'Give Me Five'– A healthy choice for your kids BY STEPHANIE QUIRANTES, MS, RDN
Few children (or adults) eat enough fruits and vegetables during the day. That’s why the dietitians at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital developed “Give Me Five,” an educational program to encourage everyone to eat at least five fruits and veggies each day. For example, a day’s worth of fruit and veggies for a child ages 4 to 8 might include a mandarin orange, a half cup of raspberries, half cup of carrots, half cup of blueberries, half cup of corn and a celery stalk. Why are fruits and vegetables so important? Poor nutrition is linked to obesity and chronic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems and cancer. Eating healthy foods – rather than those high in fats, sugars, salts and calories – is the best way to lower that risk throughout your child’s lifetime. The federal “2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans” recommends filling half your plate at every meal with fruits and vegetables. However, studies indicate that Florida residents consume less than two fruits and vegetables a day. But there are plenty of ways to improve your child’s nutrition without making a drastic change in your family’s lifestyle. The Dietary Guidelines recommend a healthy eating pattern that includes a variety of different vegetables and fruits, whole grains, oils, fat-free or low-fat dairy products, and protein foods like fish, lean meats, poultry, eggs, beans, nuts, seeds and soy products. These are foods that are dense in nutrients – not calories. Fruits and veggies provide many nutrients, including potassium (helps maintain healthy blood pressure), Vitamin C (aids in growth of all body tissues, from

the teeth and gums to the skin), Vitamin A (keeps eyes and skin healthy and protects against infections), and fiber (promotes proper bowel function, helping reduce constipation). They’re also a convenient choice for busy parents, because they come in many forms – fresh, frozen, canned and dried – so they’re always ready for lunch, dinner or an after-school snack. South Florida families also have a wide variety of choices with different colors, textures and flavors: black beans, red peppers, yellow squash, dark-green broccoli, as well as oranges, grapefruits and mangoes, to name just a few. Some fruits and veggies crunch and others squirt. Some you peel and others you don’t. Best of all, some will grow right in your own garden. TIPS FOR PARENTS If your child is a picky eater, here are some suggestions to get them to enjoy five servings of fruits and vegetables a day: Set a good example: have a fruit or veggie with every meal – children are more likely to eat what parents eat. Get them involved: invite kids to pick produce at the store and help with the washing and preparing at home. Keep a stash of washed and chopped fruits and veggies in plastic containers so they are ready to go. Keep a fruit basket on the kitchen counter. Play “Hide the Veggies.” Use a spiralizer to make veggies fun. Grill vegetable kabobs on the barbecue. Don’t be afraid to experiment with new recipes. You could shred carrots or zucchini for meatloaf, add chopped veggies to pasta sauces or used mashed sweet potatoes to thicken stews, soups and gravies. Remember the “Give Me Five” approach, and help your child get off to a healthy start in life.

Study shows marketing health food to kids works BY SUE HUBBARD, M.D., KIDSDR.COM
The marketing of foods to children continues to be a hot topic. As any parent knows, by the time children are 3, 4 or 5, they can often point to the box of sugary cereal with their favorite cartoon character on it or identify a sign (McDonalds, Chick-Fil-A, Pizza Hut) although they are not yet reading. Companies are very clever when it comes to marketing, especially to children, who drive a lot of consumer choices. However, an article in the “Pediatrics” July issue shows how marketing may also drive healthy food choices. A study, titled “Marketing Vegetable in Elementary School Cafeterias to Increase Uptake,” looked at the number of students who chose fresh vegetables from the salad bar at 10 elementary school cafeterias in a large school district over a six-week period. The study included four different groups. In the first group, the schools displayed vinyl banners with branded cartoon veg-
etable characters. These banners were then wrapped around the salad bar bases. The characters displayed “super human” strength related to eating vegetables (the Popeye of my generation with his spinach). The second group of schools showed short television segments, which had vegetable characters delivering healthy nutritional advice. In the third group of schools, both the salad bar banners and TV segments were used to promote healthy nutrition and food choices. The fourth group was the control group and received no intervention. The intervention schools also had decals with the vegetable characters placed on the floor that directed the children to the salad bars. The results? Nearly twice as many students ate vegetables from the salad bar when they were exposed to the banners. More than three times as many students who were exposed to both banners and
TV segments went to the salad bar (more girls than boys). Interestingly, the marketing campaign also increased the number of students who chose a vegetable serving in the regular lunch line as well. So it seems that branded marketing strategies may be used in a positive way to promote healthier food choices among young children. Now we just have to get the advertisers to change some of their branded messaging aimed at young children from the “junk” to the healthy foods, as we have data to show that kids will choose good foods, especially if their super heroes like it, too.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS WITH ALLERGY AND ASTHMA
The N.1 rule with allergies (and asthma) is awareness. Knowledge brings power and inclusiveness, no kid or adult should feel isolated or different because he or she cannot enjoy the eggnog or the pecan pie. Not everyone knows what a food allergy is. If you think about it, before being diagnosed, did you really know what gluten was or that lactose intolerance is different from milk allergy? What’s most important is that anaphylaxis is serious; it’s a scarysounding word and can be lifethreatening and all efforts must be conducted to avoid it at all costs.
1 2 3 4
SOME RECOMMENDATIONS TO ENJOY THE HOLIDAYS AND PROMOTE AN INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT You or one of your children suffer from a pet allergy: it’s common belief that the pet’s fur is the culprit and we know this is not the case. Visiting family members who own a cat that is allowed to jump on the sofa and purrs affectionately can really stir a domino effect of symptoms. School gatherings for Thanksgiving or holiday celebrations can be stressful instead of fun and joyful: do you really trust someone who is not familiar with food allergies to know the repercussions of using, touching or mixing an allergen in the recipe? If you think of it for a second, it would be a lot of pressure on the wrong person. The best way to bypass fear and let things run smooth is to put yourself in charge as room parent or chaperone. It is as simple as communicating and being proactive. Disclose the ingredients, be creative and label items and dishes with “gluten free” or “egg free”. If the party is at someone’s home, the less conflicting way to manage your allergy is to speak with the hostess in advance and suggest your bringing your own cooked meal or plate There are some chances you could be allergic to house plants and even pine, although rare in South Florida, but if you suffer from environmental allergies you may want to watch out for synthetic trees, garlands and scented potpourri that are catalysts for humidity, accumulated dust and eventually mold.
Florida Center For Allergy & Asthma Care has 17 convenient locations throughout Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. To schedule an appointment call 1-877-4-ALLERGY or visit florida-allergy.com

Thinking Outside the (Toy) Box: Creative, Non-Toy Gift Ideas for Kids BY ALYSSA CHIRCO Are you tired of spending your hard-earned money on presents that get played with briefly and then tossed aside? Keep in mind that toys are not the only type of gift that kids love to receive. Next time you are shopping for a birthday, holiday or other special occasion, try thinking outside the proverbial toy box. You will discover many creative, non-toy gift ideas sure to surprise and delight children of all ages. 1. A Membership. When you invest in season passes or annual memberships, your kids get to visit the places they love all year long. Choose from favorite local destinations, such as zoos, wildlife centers, amusement parks, water parks and children’s museums. 2. An Experience. Instead of buying a gift card to yet another store at the mall, why not give a gift certificate or voucher for an experience or activity your child would enjoy? Consider options such as bowling, ice skating, horseback riding or indoor rock climbing. Or fill a bucket with tokens from a nearby arcade and promise to visit soon. 3. A Subscription. Popular children’s magazines such as “Highlights” and “Cricket” help build literacy skills, and they also encourage kids to read for fun. Give your child a subscription as a gift,
26

024-029 FEATURES.indd 26
and then watch his eyes light up each time a new issue arrives in the mail or becomes available for download. 4. Tickets. Tickets to a sporting event such as a hockey or football game make a great gift for a tiny sports fan, especially when accompanied by a team jersey. Not into sports? Encourage your kids to embrace the arts with tickets to a play, symphony or ballet. Many troupes offer short, interactive performances specifically for younger audiences. 5. Lessons. From weekly dance or karate lessons to a special, parent-child cooking class, kids love the opportunity to learn new things. Wrap up an item they can use for their lessons – perhaps a new leotard for dance or a personalized apron for cooking – so they will have a gift to open. 6. A Coupon Book. Turn the tables on those handmade coupon books that kids love to give as gifts. Design a book of your own featuring coupons your children will be excited to redeem. Ideas include: A “Get Out of Chores Free” pass An ice cream date with Mom or Dad A “Technology Ticket” for extra time using an electronic device A chance to stay up 30 minutes past bedtime 7. A Homemade Gift Basket. Instead of buying one large gift, make a themed gift basket made up of smaller gifts related to something your child enjoys. For an avid reader, build a Book Basket filled with books, bookmarks, a book light and a gift certificate to a local bookstore. For a movie buff, create a Family Movie Night Basket filled with DVDs, boxes of movie theater candy and popcorn.
8. A Shopping Spree. For the teen or tween who wants a new wardrobe, a special shopping spree can be a much-appreciated gift. Plan to spend an entire day together trying on outfits, having lunch and enjoying quality, one-on-one time. 9. A Bedroom Makeover. Your daughter may have loved her bedroom a few years ago, but does it reflect her interests now? If she is ready for a change, surprise her with a new set of bedding. Include accessories like curtains and pillows, and include paint swatches so she can choose a new color for her walls. 10. A Pet. Give your children the gift of responsibility by surprising them with a pet of their very own. Start small with a low-maintenance pet, such as a fish or a hamster, or go all out and get a puppy or a kitten. Keep costs down by asking relatives to buy the necessary accessories – such as food, cages and pet toys – as gifts. 11. A Gift that Gives Back. Not ready to bring an animal into your home? Make a donation to the World Wildlife Fund at www.worldwildlife.org to adopt one in your child’s name. Or buy a new pair of TOMS shoes and a second pair will be donated to a child in need. Because when you give a gift that gives back, you give your children one of the best gifts of all: a reminder that birthdays and special occasions are about more than just the presents you receive.
Alyssa Chirco is a mother of two who writes about parenting and family life. Every year, she buys her children fewer and fewer toys as gifts.

Although Lubov had about five months to prepare for her role, she continues to do vocal and physical warmups daily. “Another thing that really helped me prepare for this role is I worked a summer stock gig in Maine and worked as a chambermaid during the day, and I would perform in shows at night,â€? Plus, I always have pregnant mommy friends coming over in search of something non-alcoholic that isn’t acidic juice or a boring, mainstream soda. Thankfully, Dry Sparkling has some delicious flavors to choose from, including Fuji apple, lavender, cucumber, blood orange, rhubarb, Rainier cherry, juniper berry and my personal favorite, vanilla bean. The sodas come in elegant glass bottles and are crisp without being overly sweet. Cranberry and Ginger Dry Sparkling sodas were added to the collection for holiday time. The cranberry drink pairs perfectly with ham and turkey dishes, as well as baked brie, while the ginger soda compliments sweet potatoes and pot roast. If you are looking to spice up the sodas with some alcohol, they work well as a mixer for vodka, whiskey and other libations. Dry Sparkling is stocked locally at The Fresh Market and Target. The twelfth Day Before christmas BY PATRICK HEMPFING
“I love the holidays!” my 11-year-old daughter, Jessie, exclaimed 12 days before Christmas last year. If we were playing a game that asked for a word to complete the sentence “I _____ the holidays,” love wouldn’t be my verb. Let’s face it – life gets busy. Demands fill our days with stress and anxiety. Who has extra time to shop, decorate and navigate across airport terminals or interstates? On this Sunday afternoon, Jessie suggested that we decorate before her mom, Mattie, returned from a nine-day business trip. After 8.5 days of holding down the fort, the last thing I wanted to do was to pull out boxes of lights, ribbons and bows. “Jessie, it’s not worth decorating since we’re leaving in a few days and Christmas will be over by the time we get home.” Actions speak louder than words, and my daughter is good at using both to accomplish her goals. Before I knew it, the decoration process had begun. I carried the heavy box containing the nativity set into the living room. Mattie took 10 years to find the perfect one, so Jessie always hears the “be careful with each piece” speech. Instead of stressing as she handled each fragile item, I opted to take a nap and let Jessie run with it. She, like her mother, prefers to be in charge. I awoke to a scene with the camel figurine next to Baby Jesus and Mary off to the side petting the sheep. As Jessie showed off her handiwork, she pulled Baby Jesus from the manger and said, “Look, Baby

moMENts » a Jesus fits in the camel seat!” Concerned that it might fall out of the chair and break, I quickly responded, “No, it’s best to keep Jesus in the manger.” I had hoped to get away with the nativity set as our only decoration, but Jessie wanted to decorate the entire house. As I headed to the garage and pulled items from boxes, my decorating supervisor followed close behind. I handed Jessie a string of tree lights to hang around the fireplace and nativity set. She went right to work as I searched through other boxes. A few of the bulbs were burnt out, so she twisted – instead of pulled – one of the burnt-out bulbs. This resulted in 10 bulbs in succession not lighting. I decided to hang the partially lit string over the headboard in the master bedroom to surprise Mattie. Jessie, liking the look, wanted one for her headboard, too. I carried in the Christmas stockings, the wooden Nutcrackers, some holiday stuffed animals, red ribbons and Christmas wreaths. Jessie played the radio as we decorated, but I didn’t enjoy her song selections and asked her to put on Christmas music. Was I getting into the Christmas spirit?
Jessie made a video and posted it on Instagram. She played the role of Clara and danced across the room with the nutcracker. Jessie repeated, “I love the holidays.” I smiled and noticed that my frustration and stress had turned to joy. Jessie taped two candy canes together to form a heart. She strategically placed stuffed animals all over the house. Finally, I retrieved a string of lights for her headboard. I started at the electrical outlet and strung them over her cabinet and around her night stand, then over her headboard. Jessie noted that if she had another string, she could go farther. She went to the garage and brought back two more sets of lights. I said, “Hey, we might have enough to go around your entire room.” She acknowledged that as her plan. The strings of lights taped to the four walls put out lots of light. “Jessie, I think it’s going to be too bright for you to sleep.” She shook her head in disagreement. During the decorating, Jessie thanked me four or five times. As I stacked the empty boxes against the wall in the garage, Jessie walked out and wrapped her arms around me. “Thank you for decorating for Christmas, Daddy.” I’ll never forget

that hug. When Mattie returned home that evening, Jessie quickly showed her our afternoon’s work. After bedtime prayers, Mattie, Jessie and the dog rested under the covers in Jessie’s bed, enjoying the colorful lights. Christmas came 12 days early … and I loved it. Until next month, remember to cherish the moments. Happy Holidays!

Saying "no" with a The holiday season has arrived, although I feel like it’s been here since August. Most of us look forward to a muchneeded break from work, school and homework. TEANA MCDONALD But we all know it almost never turns out to be a restful holiday season. We’re attending parties, mailing out holiday cards, preparing the house for guests, buying teacher gifts, co-worker gifts, gifts for family and friends, cooking, cleaning and decorating the house inside and out. It ALWAYS feels like so much work. This year I have decided to say “NO” with a smile (and mean it). It’s simple: This year, only attend the events and parties that fit into your plans. Stop saying “yes” out of guilt or necessity. Does it make sense to book yourself for

several holiday parties, purchase several gifts for the host/hostess, purchase outfits for some or all of these parties and ultimately be tired and stressed during the process? You can definitely make your holidays less stressful by saying “no” with a smile. Say: “Thank you so much for the invite, but unfortunately, we/I can’t make it. Have a great holiday season.” Don’t lie, don’t make up an excuse, and don’t say that you have a prior engagement – just say “no, thank you.” The more information you provide in your response, the more room it leaves for questions and negotiation. Keep it short and sweet. Unless you live in a 14-bedroom estate

with nine bathrooms, remember that you do not have to host the entire family at your house. Yes, you’ll feel guilty suggesting hotels in the beginning, but would you rather enjoy the holidays or be miserable? Remember, it’s about your sanity and boundaries, not their feelings and comfort level. (They will always be your family.) Look at what happened to poor little Kevin from “Home Alone” when they hosted the entire family. They left him behind, in the attic. When my family says they are coming to Florida to visit for the holidays, I say, “That’s great! I have one twin bed for someone to sleep on. Let me know who that’s going to be.” And when they say, “How about the couch?” I say, “No (with a smile), you wouldn’t be comfortable.” I know it sounds harsh, but it’s the truth. And yes, I love my family, but I’m being realistic. There’s no shame in catering your holiday dinner, people. I’ve done it for years! Unless, of course, you love to be in the kitchen for 48 hours cooking, stressing and watching the clock; in that case, be my guest. Catering doesn’t mean everything is provided. It could just be the main course, and then you can ask friends and family to bring the sides. Dream Dinners and Honey Baked Ham have become my BFFs. If you choose to go with another company, get started now and don’t worry about that feeling of guilt. It will be long gone when you’re eating your holiday dinner with everyone else instead of rotating the chaffing dishes, warming the sides, making sure the rolls don’t burn and making sure that the pies are perfect. It’s all done for you. Now let’s make the rest of this holiday season one that we can look back on and smile about. Go back to work and school refreshed and ready to kick off 2017 with a bang, all because you said “no” (with a smile) and meant it.

Gratitude is long-term project BY KAREN DEERWESTER ED.S. Oh, how sweet it would be if raising grateful children meant they thanked their parents for all the hard lessons and the selfless sacrifices. Thank you, Mom, for teaching me to wait patiently for that piece of pumpkin pie heaped with extra whipped cream. Thank you, Dad, for not bribing me with that toy in the checkout line. In a me-mine-now world, learning takes time, and gratitude is long-term project. Patience is extra hard in a world that rewards immediacy and quick fixes regardless of whether immediate gratification is good for children or good for grown-ups. Self-control and patience are full of frustrating moments and inevitable backsliding – just ask anyone who has ever been on a diet. Kids react just like adults to diets or lessons built on deprivation. Teaching gratitude without kindness and empathy for a child’s age and stage, and his immediate experience and abilities, will surely backfire. Or it will raise a child who acts one way when adults are watching and another way when they are not.
Kotler Clarke, in an NPR article titled “E Is For Empathy: Sesame Workshop Takes A Crack At Kindness,” suggests some parents may assume that teaching a child manners is a good way of building empathy. But, she says, “there’s really no great evidence around that. In fact, bullies are very good at having manners around adults.” Teaching gratitude does go hand in hand with abundance – think Thanksgiving cornucopia, the horn of plenty symbolizing blessings overflowing with food and good fortune. Think abundant love, listening and heartful engagement. When a child feels seen, heard and understood, they are more likely to reach out to others with the same thoughtfulness. This holiday season, try to create a generous and abundant home for your child to be generous and grateful to others. Start with each other, with your daily routines and rituals. Slow down to notice the feelings and behavior you value, especially helpfulness and acts of kindness. Then create circles of caring, what you do as a family to help others, to spread smiles and happiness.
HERE ARE 5 FABULOUS REMINDERS FROM HARVARD’S MAKING CARING COMMON PROJECT: Empathize with your child and model empathy for others. Make caring for others a priority and set high ethical expectations. Provide opportunities for children to practice empathy. Expand your child’s circle of concern. Help children develop self-control and manage feelings effectively.
Kids struggle with delayed gratification and big-picture parenting.
They want what they want when they want it because it feels urgent, important and necessary. It’s easy to get caught up in more-moremore for me. Think of the children’s classic story “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.” That little mouse will take you in circles to what he wants next. But if you show that little mouse how to make someone else happy with a cookie, he might just find the secret to happiness and gratitude.
HERE ARE SOME CHILDREN’S BOOKS THAT CAN HELP REINFORCE THE MESSAGES YOU ARE TRYING TO TEACH WHILE HONORING YOUR CHILD’S IMPULSIVE NEED FOR MORE: “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” by Laura Joffe Numeroff “Too Many Toys” by David Shannon “Waiting” by Kevin Henkes “ ‘More More More,’ Said the Baby” by Vera B. Williams “Bernice Gets Carried Away” by Hannah E. Harrison “Never Say No to a Princess!” by Tracey Corderoy “Papa Gave Me a Stick” by Janice Levy
With an abundance of love and understanding, even very young children can make a big difference in families and to others. They will feel proud and capable. And just maybe, they will one day say “thank you” to the people who love them most of all. If not, let us say it for them: “Thank you, Moms. Thank you, Dads. You are making a giant difference in this world.”

Stoking your tween's Question Meter BY MARGARET SAGARESE Little kids are notorious for bombarding parents with questions. Why this? Why that? Harvard child psychologist Paul Harris points to research that shows a child asks 40,000 questions between the ages of 2 and 5. No wonder parents react impatiently and shut down the inquisition. Questioning peaks about age 4 or 5. By then, a child is not merely seeking attention or looking for a factual answer. No, at that point, your son or daughter clearly wants an explanation. Tweens bring yet another dimension to the questioning process: rebellion. Their interrogations, such as “Did you ever smoke pot?” or “Why do I need a clean room?” are designed to play a game of “gotcha” or attack parental authority. Warren Berger, who calls himself a questionologist and is author of “A More Beautiful Question,” wants parents to put aside the discomfort of such questions. He insists the art of questioning is critical in today’s world. We need to encourage – not discourage– tweenage questioning. TOO MUCH INFORMATION… TOO FEW QUESTIONS We’ve come to realize that we live in the information age. Answers are everywhere. Google is now a verb. Cellphones are the delivery system. Think of this information overload in the context of the supply-and-demand scenario. If answers are in great supply, then they are not as valuable as questions. Schools don’t do a good job of encouraging questions. Teachers labor under enormous pressure to teach to a curriculum tied to a testing process. This plan measures how much information kids can learn and repeat – in other words, how many right answers they can regurgitate. A student who questions is a distraction. The question itself seems to get in the way of the educational task at hand. Berger points out that our educational system dates back to the Industrial Revolution, when kids were taught to sit still and master skills, just what adult factory workers needed as they did their part as
cogs in a long assembly line. Business in the 21st century requires a different skill set. When companies put a premium on innovation, workers need to be more than simply productive; they need to be curious and inquisitive. Questions organize thinking around what we don’t know. They poke and prod that whole sea of ignorance that is overflowing with possibility. Historically speaking, new products can be traced to questions. Berger’s favorite is the invention of the Polaroid instant camera. As the story goes, a 3-year-old girl wanted to see the photographs her inventor father snapped. When he explained that she’d have to wait for the film to be developed, she asked “Why do we have to wait for the picture?” That question led to his inventing the instant camera. So inspiration is also the mother of invention, not just necessity. ASKING GOOD QUESTIONS So now that you know thinking should be turned upside-down, with questions more valuable than answers, what do you do to stoke your tween’s question meter? Here are a few suggestions: First off, welcome the word “why.” If it comes up when you are too stressed to answer, explain that you will address the question later. Nudge your child to ask “what if?” Model it yourself. “What if” we brainstormed how to save money to plan a family adventure. Then explore the “how” of achieving that goal. Perhaps a budget? Designing cheap dinners? It is a process that you are teaching, and it will pay off in the future. Let a question go unanswered for a while. “One of the worst things you can do with a difficult question is to try to answer it too quickly,” says Berger. “When the mind is coming up with ‘What If’ possibilities, these fresh, new ideas can take time to percolate and form. They often result from connecting existing ideas in unusual and interesting ways.” Unplug! A questioning process needs space and quiet. Answers come instanta-
neously from our electronic devices. The process of questioning is slow, just the opposite of our fast-paced Internet culture. Furthermore, the Internet and social media broadcast a steady stream of other people’s ideas, thoughts and photographs. As a result, our own thoughts often get overwhelmed. Get specific with the unplug rule. Choose a day or an evening to turn off all electronic devices. Stick to it. Kids and adults need time away from electronics in order to let go of the pace and the connection addiction. Only then can novel thoughts and unique perspectives percolate and rise. Play brain games with your tween. In the business world, consultants use ploys to jumpstart creativity. Take two unrelated items and invent new connections, products or services. How about Doritos and barbells? What would you get? A protein snack that tastes like Doritos and adds muscle during a work-out. Or a snack shaped like barbells. Or a barbell work-out designed to burn as many calories as a bag of Doritos. Such games loosen old familiar brain circuitry and make it easier for new neural connections to form. In other words, it expands creativity potential. Dogs and a cement mixer? Lipstick and oatmeal? What can you come up with? A final thought on tweens and their questions. When and if your 13-year-old asks if you ever smoked pot or drove after a few beers, answer that question with this question: Why do you want to know? Often, young adolescents are struggling with peers’ misbehavior and the temptation to join in. They are looking for ways to say no and save face. They want to talk about issues and welcome the opportunity to speak out and look for answers to questions swirling around them. Your best bet is to listen. And wait for more questions.

Founded in 2005 to help families in need, Bright Steps Forward, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization with the mission to ensure that ALL children in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties with neurological or developmental disorders have access to top quality special needs education and therapeutic interventions so they may achieve their maximum potential. Bright Steps Forward operates a fully accredited therapeutic learning center for children with special needs that serves children from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Unlike public school classrooms, the class sizes in our learning centers are small and children are grouped according to their needs. Bright Steps Forward’s academic program follows the Sunshine State Standards and we include other programs to enrich the curriculum. What sets our therapeutic learning centers apart from other special needs programs is our ability to provide intensive ABA, PT, OT and speech therapies during or after the tutoring sessions so that each child can blossom socially, physically as well as cognitively.
