HUZZAH! RENN FEST CELEBRATING 25 YEARS BY JENNIFER JHON
In Egypt, ancient secrets meet modern science
A new exhibit opens at the Museum of Discovery & Science this month: “Lost Egypt: Ancient Secrets, Modern Science.” The threemonth exhibit shows how archaeologists use technology to uncover and understand ancient civilizations. The show’s interactive challenges and artifacts, such as a real human mummy and animal mummies, plus scans and reconstructions, will help visitors understand ancient Egypt, its culture and its people. The exhibit also features video interviews and photographs of real scientists working in Egypt. Learn more at Mods.org
Talk about having history: The Florida Renaissance Festival celebrates its 25th season this year from Feb. 11 to March 26 at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach. The festival is a treasure trove of activities for children and families, with a Kid’s Kingdom and storytelling, plays, sword fighting, jousts, horses, knights, magic and music throughout the festival. Families can dress up as Renaissance royalty, pirates, fairies or knights and join in the fun from 10 a.m. to sunset every Saturday and Sunday. An aerial high-wire show by The Pirates of the Colombian Caribbean is joining the festival this year, and many crowd favorites are returning. Pirates shoot cannons into the lake, mounted knights joust and falconers show off the talents of their winged friends several times a day during the fest’s seven weekends. Each weekend has a different theme, including (in order) Pirates’ Weekend, Time Travelers’ Weekend (which includes Presidents Day on Feb. 20), Masquerade, Wenches, Taste of FLARF (Florida Renaissance Festival), Celtic Weekend, and Vikings and Barbarians. Feb. 18 and 19 are also South Florida Parenting Kids Fun Pass days, so kids ages 6-11 with a Fun Pass get in free with a paid adult admission (a $9 value). And on Presidents Day, Feb. 20, all kids under 12, senior citizens and teachers with ID get in free before noon. Inside the festival, the shows and performances are free, and they are scheduled on multiple stages throughout the event. The fair’s vendors are entertaining as well, with glass blowing demonstrations, interactive candle making and Florida wine tastings. Themed encampments give visitors a closer look at various aspects of Renaissance life. Prices are $21 for adults at the gate and $9 for ages 6 to 11. Ages 5 and under are free. Discount tickets are sold at Walgreens, and season passes are sold online. Get tickets and information at ren-fest.com. Florida Renaissance Festival is also on Facebook, on Twitter @FlaRenFest and Instagram/flarenfest.
DID YOU KNOW? The Florida Renaissance Festival’s Scout Program is a great way to get children involved in the history of the era. Troops with a minimum of six Scouts can print the program booklet at home and do not need reservations to participate in the day of activities designed just for them. ren-fest.com/events/scout-program/

Ear Tubes are effective in treating children’s painful infections BY YAMILET TIRADO, M.D.
Many young children suffer from painful infections of the ear. In infants, the symptoms of an earache include irritability or crying that cannot be soothed by rocking or feeding. Many young children with an acute ear infection have a fever or trouble sleeping or complain about pain or hearing loss in the affected ear. The most common type of ear infection is called otitis media, a condition caused by a blockage in the normal drainage of fluid produced in the middle ear, which is located just behind the eardrum. That fluid blockage can lead to an infection, a condition that occurs most frequently in infants and preschoolers, although it can also occur in older children. Some of the causes of earaches include allergies, colds and the flu, or an infection from the adenoids in the upper throat. Acute ear infections occur most often in the winter when colds spread more frequently among children. Fortunately, most earaches go away in
a day or two without medical treatment. You could apply a warm cloth or warm water bottle to the affected ear, or give your child over-the-counter ear drops or a pain reliever (not aspirin) to help your child feel more comfortable. But if the earache gets worse, continues for more than a day or two, or becomes a regular problem, you should contact your pediatrician. Your doctor can use an otoscope to look inside your child’s ears for signs of infection, such as redness or swelling. A hearing test might be recommended if your child has a history of ear infections. TREATING EAR INFECTIONS If your child has an ear infection, your doctor might prescribe a stronger painreliever along with antibiotics. However, antibiotics only work against bacteria and won’t help your child if the infection is caused by a virus. If the painful ear infections continue,
one of the most effective forms of treatment is the placement of tiny tubes in the ear drum to release the fluid trapped in the middle ear. This safe, well-established microsurgical procedure called myringotomy typically takes about 30 minutes. First, the otolaryngologist will remove any fluid that has collected in the middle ear. Then, a small tube is placed through the eardrum, allowing air to flow into the middle ear and equalize the pressure is on both sides of the eardrum. The tube also provides a healthy drainage channel for the fluid, reducing the risk of future ear infections and potential hearing loss. Most parents report good results from ear tube surgery, as their children feel better, have few infections and recover from illness more quickly. In most cases, the eardrum gradually heals itself, and tubes fall out on their own after serving their purpose. TIPS FOR PARENTS Here are some suggestions for reducing your child’s risk of ear infections: • Wash your child’s hands frequently (and do the same yourself). • Keep playthings and toys clean, using a disinfectant spray or wipe. • Avoid pacifiers. • Breastfeed because it reduces the likelihood of ear infections. • If you are bottle feeding, hold your infant in an upright, seated position. • Don’t smoke inside the home to minimize your child’s exposure to secondhand smoke. • Make sure your child’s immunizations are up to date, including pneumococcal vaccine. This can help prevent bacterial ear and respiratory infections. Remember that most earaches will clear up on their own without antibiotics or microsurgery. But if your child suffers from a series of painful ear infections, see a doctor right away to determine the best course of treatment.
Yamilet Tirado, M.D., is a pediatric otolaryngology specialist at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, part of Miami Children’s Hospital System.

Functional Foods BY RACHEL SESTRICH, RD, LD
We know that food is a necessary part of life; we need it for our bodies to grow and function properly. But can some foods really prevent or even cure diseases? “Functional foods” claim to have various health benefits, such as reducing cholesterol and preventing cancer. You will find these claims on the packaging of items in stores. For example, a box of Cheerios says “you can lower your cholesterol 4% in 6 weeks.” So what exactly is a functional food? All food is functional as it provides basic nutrition. However, functional food is a class of foods said to provide additional health benefits beyond basic nutrition. Foods in this category are often given additional functions by adding new ingredients or more of an existing ingredient. FUNCTIONAL FOODS INCLUDE: * Conventional (non-organic) foods such as grains, fruits, vegetables and nuts. * Fortified foods such as orange juice with added calcium for bone health. * Medical foods such as tube feeding solutions or Glucerna nutritional drinks for individuals with diabetes. * Foods for special dietary needs like infant formula and gluten-free or dairy-free foods. Functional foods are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, and claims made are based on scientific evidence. However, the health claims made on many product labels are a marketing tool, and many consumers are drawn to purchasing these items by marketing only. It is important to look beyond the front of the package and turn to the nutrition facts panel to see what is actually in the product, its nutrients and ingredients. nerals Many products are fortified or enriched, meaning vitamins, minerals nsume or other nutrients are added after processing. You may have to consume a lot more of a fortified product to get the same benefit of eating a food that naturally has these nutrients in it. in Include in your diet the following foods, which naturally contain functional ingredients beneficial for good health: Salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which lower er n, and the risk of heart disease, improve brain development and function, reduce joint pain. Whole grains contain fiber to help lower cholesterol and blood pressure and improve digestive health; look on the ingredient list to make sure whole grains are listed as the first ingredient. Beans contain cancer-fighting plant chemicals, fiber, protein, potassium and folate. Berries are packed with antioxidants, which prevent/slow oxidative ativ ve damage to our body and boost our immune system. Cranberry juice can reduce the risk of urinary tract infections. Tomatoes contain lycopene, which may protect against certain cancers. ancers. Yogurt contains probiotics, which help keep your gut healthy and nd protect your immune system. Nuts such as almonds and cashews have magnesium, which helpss owerr lower blood pressure. Almonds, walnuts and pecans can help lower cholesterol. sts off The most important thing is to eat a balanced diet that consists lean protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy. ssible. Food in its most natural form is best but is sometimes not possible. tain Aim to consume foods that are nutrient-dense, meaning they cont contain ient li ist fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals and do not have an ingredient list a mile long. 4 ways to make food a part of your 2017 vacation BY EILEEN OGINTZ, TRIBUNE CONTENT AGENCY Red or green? That’s what everyone asks you in New Mexico restaurants. Translation: Do you want New Mexico’s famous red or green chiles? You can teach the kids a lot about the culture of a place through its food. Besides, it’s fun. Two-thirds of those polled for the 2016 Portrait of American Travelers say fine dining is important on vacation. Food is especially important for millennial families. MMGY Global’s Steve Cohen said at the TMS Family Travel Summit that 77 percent of those polled said experiencing new cuisines was a motivation for vacation. Chefs and hoteliers report that kids are often the biggest foodies in the family and turn up their noses at traditional kids’ menus once they are past kindergarten. “The families I see today have a whole different take on food,” said celebrity chef and hotelier Charlie Palmer, the father of four sons. “They are concerned about the quality of the food they are eating.” To that end, it’s up to all of us to help restaurants and hotels up their game when it comes to food for kids. If you think the kids’ menu is too limited, ask to order a half portion at half price or an appetizer portion. If the waiter balks, ask to speak to a manager. Award-winning San Francisco chef Traci Des Jardins wishes American restaurants would take a page – a menu page – from their counterparts in other parts of the world. “The United States is one of the only places in the world that has special meals for kids,” she said. “We are conditioned to teach kids to eat differently than we do and that is a mistake.” This is especially true when kids’ menus are not only pedestrian, but unhealthy, serving up processed, fat-laden dishes like macaroni and cheese and chicken fingers. Here are four ways to up your food game and encourage picky eaters to try new foods on your next 2017 trip: CONSIDER A CRUISE. Families tell me cruises offer the chance for kids to try all kinds of new foods, because if they don’t like something, they can simply order
something else. And at the bountiful buffets you can encourage them to sample something beyond pizza or a burger and fries (a curry, for example). According to the 2016 Portrait of the American Traveler, the vast majority of those polled who vacationed with kids – 88 percent – said food available onboard was influential in their cruise line selection. Just be mindful of the upcharges for specialty restaurants aboard ship. (Check to see if kids can go free, as those staying in Carnival Vista’s Family Harbor can, or at a reduced price.) VISIT A FARMER’S MARKET where you can chat with local farmers about what they grow and taste varieties of fruits and vegetables different from home. One of my favorites is the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market in San Francisco; Barcelona’s La Boqueria Food Market also shouldn’t be missed. The Original Farmers Market at Third and Fairfax in Los Angeles has been its city’s most extraordinary landmark since 1934 when 18 pick-up trucks drove onto a large vacant lot to offer fresh fruits and vegetables to families in the growing community. Let the kids help choose pic-
nic fixings. TAKE A FOOD TOUR and learn about local culture through food. Most recently, I took a food tour in Athens with Context Travel, which offers themed walking tours all over the world. Another particularly good one was the “eating history” tour in London’s East End with EatingLondonTours. co.uk. Another option: Designate food as your interest when you sign up for a complimentary tour led by a local through the Global Greeter Network, which operates in cities around the world. How about desserts, if you are in NYC with Sugartooth Tours. SIGN ON FOR A FAMILY COOKING CLASS. You’ll find them all around the world, from the Family Funday at Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in Napa Valley to La Cuisine Paris where courses are taught in English. Got your apron?

14 Fun Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Your Kids BY ALYSSA CHIRCO Valentine’s Day may be about passion and romance for some, but for parents, weekend getaways and romantic dinners for two are rarely on the menu. No matter how you celebrate with your significant other, be sure to embrace the fun that you can have with your kids on this special day, too. Ready to create some family-friendly Valentine’s Day traditions that include even the littlest loves of your life? This list of fun ways to celebrate with kids of all ages will help. 1. GET A SWEET START. Show your special sweethearts how much you care by preparing a Valentine’s Day breakfast. Use food coloring or berry juice to dye pancake or waffle batter pink, and then top your fluffy creations with sliced strawberries and whipped cream. Bonus points if you use cookie cutters to make the waffles or pancakes in the shape of hearts. 2. WEAR YOUR HEART ON YOUR SLEEVE (OR YOUR SHIRT). If you have a little girl who loves pink, this is the day for her to shine. Help her shop for a special Valentine’s Day outfit, and accessorize with heartthemed jewelry and hair bows. Not into cutesy and pink? Buy plain T-shirts and bottles of fabric paint at the local craft store and let your kids design their own Valentine’s Day fashions. 3. MAKE HANDMADE VALENTINES. Handmade Valentines may sound complicated, but with the right materials, they can be easy to make. Cut hearts out of colored construction paper and let your kids decorate them with stickers, glitter and candy conversation hearts. Short on time? Use this method of decorating to turn storebought cards into handmade Valentines. 4. SPREAD THE LOVE. In addition to giving Valentines to friends and family, spread the love further by delivering cards to a local nursing home or children’s hospital. Take your children with you so they can see how much the simple gesture means to others.

5. WRITE LETTERS OF APPRECIATION. Take the traditional Valentine’s Day card one step further by sitting down at the table with your kids and writing letters of appreciation to the important people in your lives. Grandparents, teachers and long-distance relatives will all enjoy hearing how much your family cares. 6. GET HEART HEALTHY. February is American Heart Month, so use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to educate your kids about the importance of exercising for a healthy heart. Plan an annual family walk or bike ride, or crank up the love songs and get your hearts pumping with a Valentine’s Day dance party. 7. DECORATE YOUR HOME. You decorate for Halloween and Christmas, so why not Valentine’s Day? Make the holiday fun and festive by purchasing inexpensive decorations such as streamers, balloons, silk roses and heart-themed tablecloths at the dollar store. Invite your kids to help you deck the halls of your home with Valentine’s Day cheer. 8. PLAN A KID-FRIENDLY PARTY. Now that the house is decorated, invite some of your children’s friends (or just their stuffed animals) to a party. Find free printable templates for games like Valentine’s Bingo or Tic-Tac-Toe online. Decorate cupcakes or heart-shaped cookies with pink frosting and sprinkles. Make guests feel special by serving a sparkling pink punch made of equal parts pink lemonade and strawberry-flavored sparkling water in plastic champagne flutes. 9. MAKE CHOCOLATE-COVERED STRAWBERRIES. Even kids appreciate this classic Valentine’s Day treat. And if you buy a container of microwavable dipping chocolate, it’s one they can (almost) make without help. Dip strawberries into the melted chocolate, and then set them on wax paper to harden. Wrap up these sweet treats to give as a gift, or – even better – enjoy them yourselves.
10. GO ON A SCAVENGER HUNT. Create a Valentine’s Day Scavenger Hunt for the whole family by writing clues on paper hearts and hiding them all over your home. Each clue should lead participants to the next and, finally, to a special gift or message at the end. 11. ENCOURAGE A LOVE OF READING. A book like Sam McBratney’s Guess How Much I Love You is perfect to read aloud on Valentine’s Day. Or introduce your family to Robert Sabuda’s Saint Valentine, which tells the story of the ancient Roman priest and physician for whom Valentine’s Day is thought to be named. 12. COMMIT RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS. Did you know that Valentine’s Day falls during Random Acts of Kindness Week (Feb. 12-18)? Spend Feb. 14th performing kind gestures in your community. Smile at everyone you see. Deliver flowers to an elderly neighbor. Challenge your kids to see who can commit the most acts of kindness throughout the course of the day. 13. ENJOY A FAMILY DATE NIGHT. Skip the reservation for two and take the whole family out for a night on the town instead. Get dressed up in nice clothes and dine at a restaurant you all enjoy. End the evening with a horse-drawn carriage ride or a trip to an ice rink to skate together. 14. SAY “I LOVE YOU.” How often do you say those three simple words out loud? No matter how else you choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day, there’s no better way (or day) to let your children know how just how special you think they are.
Alyssa Chirco writes about parenting and family life for publications throughout North America. Making chocolate-covered strawberries with her kids is her favorite way to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Love takes center stage with a Valentine’s Party BY CAROL J. ALEXANDER
Nothing celebrates friendship more than a Valentine’s party. With a decorated shoe box, a bowlful of conversation hearts and chocolate treats galore, friends can show the appreciation that is at the heart of the holiday. Preparation can make your Valentine’s party a memorable affair, and these ideas can help put your guests in the giving spirit. INVITATIONS Decorate your invitations with a heartshaped potato stamp. Better yet, use a heart-shaped punch and stamps from your scrapbooking supplies to cut heart shapes from red or pink cardstock. Punch holes in the top of your card about an inch apart, thread ribbon through them and tie. Tear pieces of red, pink and white tissue paper into small pieces. Glue on an outline of a heart to create a pretty collage. Write your invitation on a paper doily with a permanent marker. Roll up and tie with a ribbon. Using a paper doily as a stencil, spray
paint the lace pattern on card stock. MENU Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut slices of bread and create sandwiches your crowd will enjoy. Have two fondue pots for dipping. Make a cheese sauce for one and a chocolate sauce for the other. Dip cut-up vegetables, meat cubes, bread cubes or breadsticks, and meatballs in the cheese. Dip cut fruit, strawberries, pretzels or marshmallows in the chocolate. Cook shish-kabobs on the grill. Get out the punch bowl and serve punch made with a lemon/lime soda and strawberry sherbet. Create a vegetable platter and use a large, hollowed out apple or pepper to serve the dip. DECORATIONS Use red, pink or white carnations in random vases around your room or patio. Fill clear dishes with conversation hearts or red hot candies. Insert votive holders or tea lights in the center for theme-related candle holders. Hollow out bright red apples and use as votive or tea light holders to line a mantle. Use three apples—small, medium, and large—to create an apple topiary. Decorate them individually and then stack them in a flowerpot filled with dried greenery and baby’s breath. Place the largest on the bottom, medium-sized one in the middle,
and the smallest on the top. To keep them together, thread them onto a skewer. Use jars of different shapes and sizes filled with red marbles as vases for flower arrangements. Dress up the jars by tying a ribbon around the threads. Line your buffet table with cut-out hearts, heart confetti or rose petals. ACTIVITIES Set out a big jar of small candies like red M&M’s or conversation hearts. Have guests predict how many candies are in the jar. Give a prize to the person guessing the closest without going over. Have two stations set up — one for creating mailboxes from small boxes and the other for creating Valentine cards. Throughout the day, have children make a mailbox for themselves and cards for the other guests. When they go home, each guest takes home a mailbox full of cards. Play Pin The Heart on The Tin Man. Obtain or draw a life-size likeness of the Tin Man from the “Wizard of Oz.” Have blind-folded guests try to pin a heart on him in the fashion of Pin The Tail on The Donkey. Have a relay race with spoons full of red hots, candy hearts or even pink cotton balls.

The latest in parties -what’s hot and what’s notBY CHRISSIE FERGUSON
L
et’s face it: If there are presents, cake and a few best friends in tow, a birthday party is perfect in a child’s eyes. But as parents, we don’t always keep things simple. Instead, we go the extra mile to make sure our child’s special day is memorable and unique. Thinking of new ideas every year is not always easy, however. That’s why it’s important to be in-the-know about what’s trending in 2017. “What’s been popular for kids is whatever character they’ve fallen in love with in the first years,” says Jessyca Perez, an event coordinator and owner of “Events by Jess,” located in Miami. Mickey Mouse has always been popular with young children and “never seems to go out of style,” Perez says. But this year, parents are choosing theme-parties that feature Mickey with a twist, such as Safari and Nautical Mickey. Carla Tavolacci, an event designer with “The Event Group Design and Décor” in Pompano Beach, agrees that characters are still popular at parties. “Disney always has a hand in whatever the theme is,” Tavolacci says. “There are a lot of Disney movies that have just come out, [including] Trolls and Beauty and the Beast. So I can foresee a lot of tea parties.” Heather Cipriani’s Miami-based company, Fairy Tale Favorites, provides performers dressed in character for parties throughout South Florida. Cipriani knows firsthand that 2017 will be a popular year for the princess, Belle. “I am seeing less of the Frozen parties; the parents are tired of it,” Ciprani says. “The older princesses are coming out, especially Belle, because there is a new movie coming FEBRUARY 2017 |

out.” Let’s not forget about the boys. According to Cipriani, “Star Wars” characters and superheroes continue to be all the rage. “‘Rogue One’ is obviously going to be very popular” this year for boys, she said. While movie characters will influence the themes of parties in 2017, event planners are predicting parties full of entertainment and activity. “They are shying away from the bounce house,” says Tavolacci – whose clientele includes stars who live in South Florida, “and they’re leaning more toward the interaction and interactive stuff.” “I’m doing a ‘Star Wars’ party in April, and we are doing a Jedi training,” Tavolacci says. “The activities keep the kids entertained, and the parents can actually relax and enjoy themselves as well.” Perez agrees that boys’ parties, in particular, will be more interactive this year. At a recent party, “we did a pirate theme and rented pirates and sailors and did a whole play with the kids,” Perez says. The characters from Fairy Tale Favorites, a company Perez uses, do interactive storytelling and songs at parties. “After they are done with their storytelling, they’ll do dancing games and freeze dance,” says Cipriani. “[The characters] do meet-and-greets and makeup and answer questions.” Jessica Lighter, a party stylist in Boca Raton and owner of Celebration Stylist, says unicorns and Trolls are on the trend list, as well as fruit-themed parties – “think watermelon, strawberries, pineapples or even tutti frutti. Another big trend is modern, bold black-andwhite parties with a pop of color. “Anything gold is still going strong, too,” she wrote via email. Hosting parties at unique venues is also the latest trend. A place like “Picolinos Farm” in Miami could be fun for a Safari Mickey party. Here, children can take pony rides, zip line and enjoy the petting zoo. Red Carpet Kids in Miami is a party experience trending straight from New York City. “The core of what we do is experiential, interactive events,” says Eva Shure, CEO and co-founder of Red Carpet Kids. “We have the world premier experience. We are trying to the get the kids excited about movies.”
22
southfloridaparenting.com |
016-023 FEATURES.indd 22
According to Shure, children get costumed depending on the movie in which they’ve chosen to star, and they act in front of a green screen, with pre-selected backdrops. The movie is then edited while the kids eat pizza and have cake. After the party, the show is premiered and all of the kids take home a DVD of their movie “premier.” Want to host a rad party on a Sunday? Check out “Ramp 48,” where kids can have hours of fun on the skateboard. Ali Mendia, wife of pro surfer Peter Mendia and mother to Kepa, a 10-year-old competitive surfer and skater, says, “Ramp 48 is awesome. It has big ramps, bowls and a street section. “It’s indoors, so you can go when it rains,” says Mendia, “and it’s good for all levels – beginners to pros.” Having the option of going inside during a party is crucial in South Florida. “Living in South Florida, you can’t predict the weather for your party,” Tavolacci says. “I always tell people to plan on [the party] being indoors, and if we can pull it outside, we will.” “And don’t plan on doing anything too big that you can’t fit [the party] inside,” she says. “Plan your guest count and décor around being inside.” If you’re on a budget, house parties are perfect. “It’s more affordable to have the party at your house,” Tavolacci says. “All the parties I am currently doing are at the client’s homes.” One can also save money by using Pinterest and Etsy. “Pinterest is a great forum for inspiration,” Tavolacci says. And with Etsy, “you make something that was not custom, custom. Even with invitations, you can print and cut out your own, which saves a tremendous amount of money.” If parents want florals at the party, “stick with what’s currently in season,” Tavolacci says. Doing the food yourself also helps with a budget. “Just getting all the party trays from Publix can be helpful,” she says. “It’s less work on a parent and costs a lot less.”

Through experience, training, and determination, our team is ready for every eventuality. Just ask Ivanna and David Gutierrez, who conceived quadruplets naturally – an extremely rare occurrence that happens in just 1 in 700,000 pregnancies. Six months into Ivanna’s pregnancy, the quadruplets’ doctors determined that they had to be delivered by emergency C-section. Because of specialized care in the neonatal intensive care unit at Holtz Children’s, the Gutierrez quadruplets are all happy, healthy, and active. At the largest public hospital system in the country, our team has seen a lot – and is prepared for even more. Visit HoltzChildrensHospital.org or call 305-585-KIDS.

ASK THE EXPERTS: THE WINTER FORECAST We are a month into the New Year, enjoying a fresh start, a new lease on life, and a vibrant energy to do better. Some simple tips can help keep our children and pets safe and healthy in 2017, while still also looking cute and stylish.
BY FOREVER FRECKLED
THE VETERINARIAN Want to keep your pets heathy this year? Make sure to bring your pet to your veterinarian at least 2 times per year. Pets cannot tell us when they are not feeling well, and veterinarians may be able to detect things that pets’ parents do not. Yearly bloodwork is important for catching and treating disease early. A physical examination gives veterinarians an overall idea about your pet’s health, but blood work will better detect organ function and certain diseases. Make sure your pet is up to date on vaccinations, per AAHA regulations. It is important to protect your pet against easy transmittable and deadly diseases. Proper parasite control is also imperative. Monthly flea/tick and heart worm prevention is safe and easy. Fleas and ticks pass along many diseases. Heart worm is a serious parasite that targets your pet’s heart and can cause death. Know the local and seasonal plants and chemicals that are toxic to your pets. Keep your pet at the proper weight. Overweight pets are more prone to diabetes, degenerative joint disease and other diseases. Use natural supplements glucosamine chondroitin sulfate for joint health and omega 3 fatty acids for skin and cardiac health. Have your pet’s teeth cleaned professionally and maintain your pet’s dental health. Periodontal disease is the most overlooked disease in pets and can cause significant health problems such as cardiac disease, diabetes and systemic illness.
THE PEDIATRICIAN Winter is here, bringing a host of health challenges, especially for families with children:
The common cold. The winter months are the busiest months in the emergency room as we see a huge surge of upper respiratory infections. Parents should get ready to break out the tissues and humidifiers; this is the time of year when children suffer from fever, runny nose and cough. The common cold can be caused by many different viruses. Unfortunately, they all result in similar symptoms: sore throat, runny nose, cough and low-grade fever. The symptoms typically peak 3 to 5 days into the virus and take 7-10 days to completely resolve. It is important during these months to stock the house with Motrin and Tylenol and know the appropriate dose for your child’s weight. Influenza. The flu, also known as influenza, is caused by a virus that infects the respiratory system. Unlike other viruses that cause cold-like symptoms, the flu can cause severe illness and have life threatening complications. Along with runny nose, cough and sore throat, influenza causes high fever, muscle aches and extreme fatigue. It is estimated that 5-20 percent of the U.S. population will suffer from the flu this year, and over 200,000 people will be hospitalized because of complications. Unlike with the common cold, we have medication to help shorten the duration of the virus, but it must be started in the first 24-48 hours of symptoms. The best way to protect your family is to get annual flu shots. RSV. Respiratory syncytial virus, also known as RSV, is the leading cause of bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways in the lung) in children younger than 1. This respiratory virus can cause symptoms ranging from runny nose and mild cough to more serious respiratory symptoms, such as difficulty breathing and shortness of breath. Newborns and infants are at higher risk for developing wheezing and dehydration if they become sick with RSV. Most cases can be managed at home with the help of your pediatrician. It is important to have your child evaluated to assess the severity of the illness and see if intervention is necessary. The best way to prevent your child from getting RSV is to practice good handwashing hygiene and to clean contaminated surfaces.
THE STYLIST
It’s a new year and a fresh start. The new year always gives me that extra push and motivation to clean out my closet and invest in some new winter pieces. So how does a Floridian dress for the winter? There are plenty of on-trend items that are perfect for that cozy and crisp winter look. Here are some tips to follow when putting together the perfect outfit: Florida temperatures are constantly changing. I rarely go anywhere without my oversized cardigan. It keeps me warm and gives a cozy layered look. Wear wintery fabrics or prints, such as bold plaids or warm velvets. Invest in a well-fitted pair of black jeans. Black is your staple color for the cold and never goes out of style. If you are wearing a neutral outfit, throw on a bold lightweight scarf. This simple addition turns a basic outfit into something more stylish. I would choose a bold plaid or animal print. Above is an example of the perfect winter outfit for one of our rare cold days down here in Florida

dad's view
The good, the bad, and the ugly BY PATRICK HEMPFING “Love you, Daddy.” My 12-year-old daughter, Jessie, slammed the car door and went off to school, toting her book bag, lunchbox and clarinet. I drove out of the school parking lot happy. Each day, parents experience numerous joys and challenges. In my 12 years as a stay-at-home dad, I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly. “Love you, Daddy” provides a perfect example of the good. I never get tired of hearing those words. We experienced the bad earlier this year when Jessie had pneumonia. Any time Jessie is crying is also bad, which happened more this year because my wife, Mattie, took a new job in another state and Jessie had to leave her friends. Then there’s the ugly; Jessie learning to play the clarinet fits that bill. Early in August, Mattie and I registered Jessie for sixth grade. The middle-school receptionist handed us a course selection form and said to number the electives in order of our preference. Jessie wanted to take Drama I. Since she already excels in
“daily drama,” I didn’t see the need. In fact, I think she could teach it. However, Mattie and I approved Jessie selecting it as No. 1 on her list of electives. With Jessie’s preferred elective checked, we went through the rest. Robotics, no problem. Art, great idea. Beginning Band? Mattie wanted Jessie to learn to read music and play an instrument. Jessie had no interest. I could have gone either way. It’s amazing how three people in the same family can think so differently. Sadly for Jessie, she didn’t get into Drama I, her top choice. Beginning Band, however, is her first class each day. Little did I realize, things would only get more complicated when the band teacher invited parents to his classroom to discuss instrument options. The band director felt that Jessie’s mouth shape made the clarinet a good choice. That worked fine for me. I just didn’t want Jessie beating away on drums or clanging cymbals. Mattie envisioned her daughter playing the flute. Jessie didn’t care. We watched online videos of both instru-

ments. Although the flute makes beautiful sounds in the hands of a skilled musician, videos of students making high-pitched squeals on the flute convinced us to choose the clarinet. Next, Jessie had to learn to play it. I’ve helped Jessie with her homework, but never before have I had to wear earplugs. As it turns out, the clarinet can also make high-pitched squealing sounds. We had just moved into an apartment, and I didn’t want to force our neighbors, or our dog, to listen to clarinet practice. So I took Jessie, along with my earplugs, to our truck to complete her homework. The first week, Jessie blew into the mouthpiece, attached only to the barrel (not the rest of the clarinet), for as long as she could – 5, 7, 10 seconds and more – emitting a loud unpleasant sound. I sat beside her in the truck, timing her as she repeated this exercise to improve her lung capacity and mouth position. I doubted that Jessie needed practice for her lung capacity, as she can speak paragraphs without taking a breath. As Jessie practiced, I squinted my eyes, cupped my hands over my plugged ears … and thought about the advantages of Drama I. Speed ahead to the winter concert. A proud dad, not wearing earplugs, sat in the school auditorium. The band director, with his little white baton, led the class of more than 100 students in an impressive performance. Months earlier, most of them couldn’t even name their instruments. This leads me to two key takeaways. First, I need to get myself one of those little white batons. They apparently convey special powers to get kids to obey instructions. Second, something might start out bad or ugly, but not stay that way. Jessie recovered from her pneumonia and loves living in her new home state. There were times I thought about hiding Jessie’s clarinet. However, just by hanging on, and sometimes inserting earplugs, the clarinet turned out to be good, too. Until next month, remember to cherish the moments … and take out the earplugs to hear “I love you.”

Who’s your favorite? I absolutely love this question! As a 40-something-year-old woman, I still ask my mother this question. And ’til this day she never answers, just gives me the side-eye and a laugh (which TEANA MCDONALD I know means that I am). It’s a simple response for parents that have one child. But for those of us who don’t, it can be tricky, because deep in your heart you might just have a favorite, and you kinda feel guilty about it, right? Let me ease your guilt for a moment. When my little animals ask me this question, my response is simple. The one that is not getting on my nerves is my favorite right now. And we all know that it’s very rare when all of your kids are equally good at the same time. I’ve learned that it’s OK to have a favorite based on circumstances and situations. So, my son runs track and my daughter doesn’t, which
makes him my favorite track star. My daughter is in gymnastics, so she’s my favorite gymnast. But let’s be real, this doesn’t work all of the time, so I always choose my words carefully and wisely. Having siblings growing up always creates a sort of healthy competition within the household. There always seems to be a more dominate child who assumes the leadership role, and the others usually just follow. Growing up, I always assumed that role (no surprise there), and my little brother just followed. Which of course worked for me and made me feel (in my mind) like I was the favorite. Now that I have children of my own who are asking the same question, I’ve realized that the reason they are asking this question is because they want a little extra love, hugs or attention. And yes, being that I’m still asking my mom this question – the same probably goes for me. Since this is the month of “love,” let’s use February as the starting point of BIG
LOVE all year round. Now, I’m not saying that we don’t love our kids, that we don’t hug them, kiss them and buy them nice things. What I am proposing is scheduling dates with each child separately so they can feel like they are your “favorite” and like they are special. We take time to schedule dates with our friends, happy hours with our co-workers and dates with ourselves at the salon or nail shop. Let’s do the same with our kids. Take out that mobile device and let the scheduling begin. And remember, when they ask you “Who’s Your Favorite?” you say: “The one who’s not getting on my nerves” (with a smile).

Kids who care: Goodness from within BY KAREN DEERWESTER, ED.S. Haters and bullies are not born that way. Neither are selfish, entitled children. We choose the values that shape who we are, what we think and how we act. Unfortunately, according to Harvard’s “Making Caring Common” Project, we may have been misguided. There’s been too much emphasis on happiness and achievement instead of on caring and kindness, particularly in affluent communities. And while we say we value kindness and community, children interpret our actions very differently. It’s never too late! Breathe. Pause. Feel. Start here.

048-053 Stages.indd 48
Start now. The pressure to give children the best, the “race to nowhere,” often creates that sense of entitlement or a sense that an ondemand life is “normal.” Young children live in a Me-Mine-Now world, according to “The Entitlement-Free Child,” but that doesn’t mean it’s developmentally appropriate to stay there. Children learn and grow by experiencing delayed gratification and age-appropriate problem solving – waiting for a turn, learning how to follow simple rules and recognizing how others feel and what others need. Caring starts with experiencing kindness, being loved, knowing you can trust that others are on your side even when there is conflict and disappointment. A SENSE OF SELF - A SENSE OF OTHERS A caring world begins with a healthy sense of self, one that comes from positive
attachment, a loving family, and a safe and secure home. Peace begins within and it begins at home. How do we create connections to other people and experiences? Time in. Children learn what matters most by where we focus our attention and our time. When children seem needy, reconnect in unstressful, uncomplicated ways – holding them, sitting close without using connected devices, walks, time in nature, time to daydream or tell stories. Connect the dots between feelings and actions. Help your child understand what to do with challenging emotions. (No one ever calmed down by being told to calm down. But everyone can use a reminder to breathe or to take a minute.) Children aren’t born with social-emotional skills, so they need help learning to think and feel at the same time. We teach children to express what they need and reasonable ways to get what they need. Once they

stages » child understand their own frustrations and difficulties, they can help others. Does someone need help putting something together or encouragement to do it on their own? Even toddlers are wired to “read” people’s likes and dislikes and help someone in need. Focus on the person. Rushing through routines and errands can make people feel invisible. It starts with care-giving time (meals, baths, bedtime, school pick-up and drop-off), recognizing children are partners in daily actions. Then noticing the people who wait on us, who are our community helpers, who help the world to function, gives children a sense of place and purpose that they cannot create on their own. Express gratitude and appreciation daily. Talk about different perspectives. Imagine a world where children grow not expecting everyone and everything to be just like them. It’s inevitable that “my way” is sometimes different from “your way.” Children learn “morality” from the grownups around them – how to understand, communicate and problem-solve according to shared values such as kindness, patience, generosity, forgiveness. It’s as simple as saying that another child wants
a turn or that someone is sad, alone or frustrated, and then inviting your child to be part of a solution – “what can we do?” “Can you think of a way to help? Create hands-on, age-appropriate opportunities to give and help. Increase your awareness of how and where to help in your neighborhood and your community. Include your child in family rituals and routines of giving back and helping. By preschool age, your child will quickly see opportunities and strategies on her own – from birthday giving parties to weekly donations of food and towels to a pet adoption center. A FEW THINGS TO AVOID Just a word of caution and balance: No need for bubble wrapping and over-protecting. Learning to cope with “negative” feelings is essential to stepping outside of ourselves to see and help others. We can’t understand another’s hurt or loss if we never experienced anything that resembles it. Allow children to feel all emotions with the confidence that someone is always there to comfort and help. Don’t be a “happiness chaser.” The research is clear that focusing on happiness turns focus inward and makes us all
more “self-centered” rather than othercentered. Don’t make it all about your child. Yes, children need us to be their protectors and their best advocates. Still, focus on the big picture – family needs, school, community, even a global perspective (but keep it sincere, not just “children starving somewhere”). Children gain great comfort and purpose knowing they are part of something bigger than themselves. All of these give children a full heart to bring to others and to the world. Children, especially young children, need to know they are loved and cared for in order to care for others. They also need to grow in families where mom and dad’s needs and preferences matter, too, and where siblings and even pets deserve respect, care and attention. Start simple and watch kindness grow.

Love Lessons for boys BY MARGARET SAGARESE Males as jerks, stalkers, sexual predators, cads – the past year featured terrible narratives about men, young and old. What’s going on here? It’s time to double down and give young adolescent boys some needed guidance about the opposite sex. Girls usually get all the “talk” about sex and relationships. Since mothers do most of the talking, it’s easier to have uncomfortable conversations about puberty and sex and lust with daughters. It’s not so easy with sons or sons who may be gay. Not that having “the talk” is ever going to be fun, but here are a few suggestions about what needs to be covered for boys. Both mothers and fathers can follow these 10 love lessons. At the very least, this is a template of where to begin. 1. Tell the truth about the smooth operator. There is no such animal. “When it comes to dating and girls,” says Dr. Andrew Smiler, a developmental psychologist and therapist, “I was clueless, but I couldn’t
ask for advice. Guys are supposed to know it all, and we don’t ask for directions.” In his new book, “Dating and Sex: A Guide for the 21st Century Teen Boy,” he emphasizes that all boys have lots of anxieties. This is a point that parents can reveal to sons. Then everyone can take a deep breath. 2. Expose the myth that males are always ready and eager for sex. Dr. Smiler says the idea that all boys are Casanovas – wanting sex with as many girls as possible and as many times as possible – is just plain wrong. Make note of this as you watch movies or television shows where the Casanova stereotype pops up. Look for examples of male characters who say no to sexual come-ons. 3. Prepare boys for inevitable locker room talk with a come-back. Sooner or later, every boy finds himself in a group where girls are being talked about in demeaning language. This kind of crass and sexist cruelty doesn’t just happen among athletes
in a locker room. It can occur anywhere there are boys or men joking around. Teach that silence is not acceptable. An “I’m not comfortable with this” will take courage. Boys need to learn that standing up for women, not staying mute, is what it means to be a man. 4. Watch expressions describing romance. Think and talk about how romantic relationships are worded. “Love is a battlefield” was raised to an anthem by Pat Benatar. Or referring to your girlfriend as your “ball and chain.” “Boy Toy,” a Madonna favorite. “Trophy wife.” Love is not a conquest, nor is it a prison. Sex is not a challenge to get past all four bases. Girls are not objects to be exploited, toyed with or used to add status. Talk about what is beneath these expressions. 5. The bottom line about words is that words are the essence of love. Talking to each other is how boys and girls get to know one another. Talking is how one communicates affection, companionship,

Big things often have small beginnings. ESPINOSA ACADEMY CEA is more than a school. It is a place where children learn more about more, where the seeds of curiosity and compassion are cultivated from the start. At CEA, your child is encouraged to take chances and to always do his or her best. This guided process of self-discovery instills in your child’s heart a resilience and confidence that will last a lifetime. Analytical, imaginative, confident, and ever-kind, CEA alumni follow their dreams – and, more often than not – they live them.

stages » preteen and emotional support. Words are the romantic DNA of emotional intimacy – how romances and relationships work or do not work. Point out the error of the old wives' tale that men don’t like to talk about their feelings; they do. All humans do. 6. Getting Naked. Tween and adolescent boys are just as insecure about their bodies as girls are. There is pressure in sixpack abs. The fears go further, Dr. Smiler says. Boys worry about overall appearance or how a particular body part looks. The penis itself is loaded with OMG: Is it big enough? If a girl laughs at the sight of a penis, it could be just giggling nerves – a great piece of advice in his book, which is full of more. 7. Guilt isn’t just for girls. Feeling guilty after having a sexual experience is commonplace among boys, according to research. Guys have admitted that they felt used. Some didn’t like feeling as if they were out of control. Others admitted to being just plain embarrassed about an encounter. Having sex is a very complicated experience. It triggers many strong and complex emotions. Understanding this beforehand can help boys make better sexual decisions.
8. Hook-ups have baggage no matter what anyone says. This is a good place to bring up alcohol or any other drug taken before engaging in sexual behavior. Many young people – boys and girls – drink or take drugs to lower their inhibitions. They think this is an excuse for making a sexual decision, as in “I was drunk.” The blame game will not erase the fact everyone still has to live with the consequences of a decision. Do you know one of the biggest mistakes boys admit to? Smiler notes, “Losing one’s virginity in a classic hookup is one of the more common regrets that
dudes have.” 9. Consent. The issue of consent, especially non-verbal consent, has become the most controversial and confusing issue for boys to understand. You cannot talk enough about consent with your boys. They need to understand: a girl must give verbal consent before he moves further in an intimate situation. In films, eyes lock, body parts collide. Consent and condoms rarely are in the script. But life isn’t the movies. Point that out the next time you are watching a love scene. Tell him that hearing a “yes” is always necessary. Add that it can also be thrilling. 10. Rejection is unavoidable. Here is a big truth: Losing is part of loving. It is the risk. No one goes into a romantic relationship or a sexual situation anticipating feelings of rejection or the pain of a broken heart. Boys need to hear about the dark side of love and how to process it. Retaliation on the Internet with badmouthing or posting inappropriate pictures is not the way to go. Also, sending lewd photos of a minor is a crime. Being a gentleman entails losing in love graciously. These conversations are a tall order, but without them, how and what will boys learn?
