Seeing the silver lining It can be hard to feel grateful. Disappointments and stress can block our ability to see the good in a situation. The bigger the problem, the tougher it is to be thankful for any part of it. Teaching gratitude to our children, in such cases, is JENNIFER even harder. Some children are naturally grateful. They look at rain clouds and see rainbows. They use the opportunity of a traffic jam to wave and smile at the people in the cars around them, bless their little bunny rabbit hearts. Other children aren’t as naturally inclined to see the silver lining. They get overwhelmed more easily and resist

attempts to redirect them toward the positive. I understand, really, I do. I also want to stomp my feet and shout NO! when it is time to put away my toys and get ready for dinner. I also want to cry when I receive a cool flashing ring (or sparkly one), but it isn’t JHON my favorite color. I can also feel envy and disappointment when I can’t afford that cool new toy or my hair isn’t purple like hers. But gratitude feels so much better than all of those things. Focusing on just one positive in any situation can change my attitude, and attitude is everything. I’ve seen a lot of efforts toward gratitude on Facebook. Yes, those status updates

can be annoying. But your friends who are posting every day about one thing they are grateful for are practicing a valuable skill – one we could all use. Gratitude brings peace, joy and hope. And those, along with love, are the greatest gifts we can give our children.

Eagle eyes: Volunteers needed to watch nests Forum Publishing group report

Bald eagle nesting season began in October, and volunteers are needed to keep watch on these majestic birds. “With 1,400 nesting pairs of bald eagles, Florida is home to the largest population of bald eagles, second only to Alaska,” said Susan McKemy, the Audubon Society’s coordinator for Palm Beach County EagleWatch. “But increased exposure to human activity, development and encroachment into their natural habitat has put pressure on the eagle population and prompted our efforts at monitoring their nests.” In Palm Beach County there are more than 13 active eagle nests, many of them monitored by the Audubon EagleWatch, which gathers information about the eagles, the location of their nests and any disturbances or threats to nesting activities. The Citizen Science Project program, presented by Matt Smith, director of the Florida Audubon Center for Birds of Prey, educates volunteers about eagle nesting biology, laws, the identification of nest threats, monitoring techniques and the verification of previously unrecorded active eagle nests. “We’re collecting data … to make sure these eagles have a secure place in Florida indefinitely,” Smith said. “We want to learn as much as we can about how eagles are adapting to Florida’s changing landscape.” Since its inception in 1992 with 22 volunteers, the EagleWatch program has grown to 250 volunteers statewide. The group monitors about 270 nests, locating and verifying an average of six new nests per year, saving nests from destruction by illegal development and rescuing fallen eaglets after storms. At the start of bald eagle nesting season, eagles all over the state refurbished their nests from last year. Eggs are typically laid in late November and early December and are incubated by both adults for 30 to 33 days. Volunteers are needed to monitor nest activity weekly during nesting the season through mid-May. “This is an opportunity to get involved in the science of protecting Florida eagles,” Smith said. “We can put everybody to work.” For more information, email asetripinfo@gmail.com with “EAGLEWatch” in the subject.

Sun Sentinel report ntertainer Pitbull will christen Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest cruise ship, which will sail out of Miami. The Norwegian Escape will debut at PortMiami on Nov. 9, with Pitbull as “godfather.” Pitbull, also known as Mr. 305 and Mr. Worldwide, will be the headline performer at the ship’s naming ceremony. The Miami native also performed at the christening ceremony for Norwegian Getaway when it debuted in Miami in February 2014. He also introduced his Voli vodka brand to cruisers at that time. Voli is now available across Norwegian’s fleet and featured in several signature cocktails. The 4,200-passenger, 164,600 gross ton cruise ship will be the largest to be based year-round in Miami and will sail seven-day cruises to the Eastern Caribbean starting Nov. 14, stopping at St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; and Nassau, Bahamas. Norwegian Escape’s signature hull artwork is designed by marine wildlife artist and ocean conservationist Guy Harvey. For information, visit escape.ncl.com.

Disney: Fireworks via ferryboat Orlando Sentinel report

Walt Disney World has introduced a dessertsand-fireworks FerryTale Wishes cruise on the Seven Seas Lagoon between the Magic Kingdom and the Ticket and Transportation Center. Guests board at the Ticket Center, float around and nosh awhile, then watch the nightly fireworks for $99 for adults and $69 for ages 3-9. The captain positions the ferryboat parallel to the Magic Kingdom’s train station, so guests essentially look right up Main Street. We saw all the effects, and the soundtrack for the “Wishes” fireworks is piped on board and synchronized properly. There are food stations scattered throughout the ferry, and they serve up cheese and crackers plus desserts that, primarily, are themed to the Disney hotels on the lagoon: a key lime tart from Grand Floridian, the Polynesian de-constructed pineapple upside-down cake and the Contemporary spice flourless chocolate cake. The most distinctive-looking dessert was Cinderella’s sugar slipper with orange financier. A selection of beer and wine onboard is included in the price. For reservations, call 407-939-3463 or visit disneyworld.com.

Building Healthy Habits

By Rachel Sestrich, RD, LD

5.

e all know that it can be a real struggle to eat healthy, especially as a family. Teaching kids healthy habits while they are young is important. Once you have developed an unhealthy eating habit and carried it into your adulthood, it is much harder to change that habit.

Teach children to know “hungry” vs. “full.” Eliminate the “clean your plate” method. Parents should provide children with proper portions of foods at meals and snacks. Children should be allowed to control how much they eat. If forced to clean their plate, children do not learn to stop when they are satisfied and could be forced to eat past the point of feeling full.

W

Try these 10 simple steps to building healthy habits for the entire family.

1.

Eat lots of different colored fruits and vegetables every day. The brighter and more colorful, the better. Your plate is much more appealing when it is full of beautiful colors. Aim to eat 5-7 servings of fruits and vegetables every day, and try a new one each week.

2.

Drink water and milk. These are the only 2 beverages

10

southfloridaparenting.com |

010_011 NUTRITION.indd 10

to consume daily. Avoid sugary beverages like juice, soda, sweet tea, sports drinks and energy drinks. Water keeps you hydrated, and milk provides calcium and protein to keep our bones healthy.

3.

Eat meals as a family at the kitchen table. Families that eat meals together tend to eat healthier. This is also a time to unwind, enjoy being together and hear about everyone’s day.

4.

Turn off electronics at mealtime. When you are distracted by electronics while you are eating, the likelihood that you will overeat is high. You will likely consume 10 percent more calories, and you will not notice when you are full. You are also unable to recall how much you ate, which then leads to eating more the rest of the day.

6.

Encourage children to eat 2 bites of all foods offered. Children will often refuse to eat foods based on the appearance or smell without even having tasted it. Give them time to analyze the food: touch it, smell it, lick it, etc. Have your child take 2 bites and swallow them (no spitting out food) before making a decision about whether they like it. They might be surprised and actually like it.

NOVEMBER 2015

10/21/15 10:11 AM

family Âť nutrition

7.

Offer new foods. It might take up to 10 tries before your child likes and accepts a new food, so don’t give up after the first time. Try offering the food at a different meal and prepared in a different way. Allow some time between tries.

8.

Avoid using food as a reward or punishment. We don’t want children to associate food with behavior; food is nourishment. Often we want to give a special treat for good behavior or for trying a new food or eating a particular amount of a meal. Have you ever refused to give dessert because of poor behavior or for not eating dinner? Try to avoid doing these things and instead offer non-food rewards, such as a sticker, a toy, being able to watch a favorite show or movie, etc.

9.

Aim for 60 minutes of exercise a day. Children need to be exercising for at least one hour a day. Gym class is not offered daily, and kids are spending more time sitting, mainly in front of electronics. There are many ways to get kids to be more active. Get them involved in team sports, play outside after school, take a family walk after dinner, jump rope, do jumping jacks, ride bikes. The key is to make it part of their daily routine and make it a family affair. If the parents are active, the kids will be more likely to be active.

10.

Limit screen time to less than 2 hours a day. I see young kids, even babies, playing on cell phones everywhere I go. It’s easy to use technology as a distraction so we as parents can get things accomplished or just to give us a few minutes of peace. Allow children 120 minutes for the TV, computer, phone or other electronics each day; have them decide how they want to use this time. By adopting some or all of these habits, we can shape a healthy foundation for our children. Habits are easily learned but often difficult to break, so focus on building the right ones early. Stay active and healthy as a family.

ADVERTISER-SUPPLIED CONTENT FROM NICKLAUS CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL

Healthy Eating Tips for the Holidays By Stephanie Quirantes, MS, RD

When South Florida families celebrate the holidays, food often takes the spotlight. It might be a Thanksgiving turkey with all the trimmings, a slow-roasted pig for noche buena, freshly baked Christmas cookies or creamy eggnog sprinkled with nutmeg. With so many delicious foods on the table (and great smells coming from the kitchen), it’s hard to think about maintaining a healthy diet for your children. So, just relax. Don’t worry about counting every calorie or saying “no desserts” to your children. Instead, follow these simple suggestions, and enjoy your holiday gatherings.

RUB PEDIATRICS MD PA

PLAN YOUR MEALS CAREFULLY As you prepare for a holiday feast, take a close look at the main dishes, appetizers and side dishes. Scan the Internet for new ways to make your old favorites with less calories and fat. Just reducing the amount of cheese or type of milk in a dish can dramatically reduce the calories without losing flavor.

THINK PORTION CONTROL One of the best ways to keep your family from eating too much during the holidays is to limit the size of portions. Find a holiday portioned plate that will help them know how much to serve themselves. Your son or daughter can savor every bite without going back for seconds or thirds. For desserts, use a fun-colored ramekin or other small bowl to control the portions.

GO GREEN! Be sure to include plenty of green, leafy vegetables in your holiday menus. You can make a simple salad with lettuce, spinach or kale as the foundation and add tomatoes, carrots, mushrooms and cucumbers. Let your child sprinkle cranberries, nuts or seeds for extra nutrition. It’s a great way fill the hungry tummies with powerful nutrients and to get your holiday dinner off to a great start.

OTHER TIPS TO CONSIDER As you prepare for the holidays, here are some other suggestions to consider: Invite your child to help plan the holiday meal. When preparing your menus, have your child help you choose seasonal fruits and vegetables to round out your meals and have as snacks, appetizers and desserts. Don’t stock up on desserts or other treats until it’s almost holiday time. It’s easier for your kids to resist temptation if those foods aren’t in your home. Use herbs and spices, rather than salt, to add flavor to your foods. Show kids that there are other ways to season your recipes that are delicious and not harmful to your health. Go easy on the sauces, syrups and toppings that can add hundreds of calories to a meal. Serve water at the dinner table, rather than juices, sodas and lemonade. It’s a healthier alternative and a great everyday habit for your family. Balance your daily eating. Prepare a smaller breakfast or lunch for your children if you know dinner will be a high-calorie meal. Take charge of snacks. Have your refrigerator stocked with cut fruit and vegetables to bring out at a moment’s notice. Encourage your children to eat slowly and stop when they are full. Remind them that there will be food left over, so they can have another portion the next day. Take a walk after dinner. Even a modest amount of exercise can burn off extra calories. Become a role model for your children by filling your plate with fruits, vegetables and whole grains and limiting portions on highcalorie, high-fat foods.

Remember that a nutritious, year-round diet, combined with regular exercise, will help your children maintain their physical, emotional and mental health, while building habits that can last a lifetime. Happy holidays!

Touring for a taste BY JENNIFER JHON

There’s a lot more to South Florida than sun and sand. The area is also a culinary melting pot, and residents and visitors can sample everything from Peruvian, Japanese and Caribbean foods in Miami’s Wynwood district to fruit wines in the Redlands and craft beers in Palm Beach County. Culinary tours – many of which include history and culture along with food and drink – and regional food festivals are great choices for families with adventurous eaters. Most tours and festivals are family friendly and invite parents to bring their little ones along. Others make good dates nights (or date weekends) for couples looking for a taste of something new.

CULINARY TOURS Taste History Culinary Tours take small groups on tours to Delray Beach/Boynton Beach, Lake Worth/Lantana and West Palm Beach. “The Taste History Culinary Tour is an engaging experience on all levels,” said Lori Durante, executive tour director for Taste History. “It’s a visual experience; it’s a history learning experience” as well as a food tasting, she said. The Saturday tours are 3-5 hours long, depending on the tour, and cost $45-$50 per person for ages 14 and older. Tours are free for children under 14, but they have to be accompanied by an adult. “We want the tour to be accessible to families,” Durante said. “A young child will be exposed to historic districts, artwork, and they’ll have the opportunity to see and taste new cuisines. It’s a good

Tours often sell out and are capped at 5 children per tour, so book early at Tastehistoryculinarytours.org. Miami Culinary Tours also has tours combining the tastes and sights of South Florida. Its Wynwood Food & Art Tour starts at noon and stops at five restaurants while walking through the famous art district. The 2.5-hour tour is $69 for adults and $59 for children 13 and younger. Miami Culinary Tours also has tours through Miami Beach, Little Havana and Fort Lauderdale. Visit miamiculinarytours. com for information and to get tickets.

FOOD FESTIVALS South Florida’s largest food event, the South Beach Wine and Food Fest, doesn’t happen until February, but a great option for families who want to experience a huge variety of cuisine now is Epcot’s Food and Wine Fest, which runs through Nov. 16 at the Disney World Resort in Orlando. Foodies young and old can try foods from all over the world while enjoying Epcot’s other offerings, such as Test Track, Soarin’ and the fireworks show. Special offerings keep the event kidfriendly, such as Remy’s Ratatouille Hide & Squeak, a scavenger hunt with prizes for those who can spot the little Remy statuettes hidden around World Showcase. Special events are scheduled throughout the festival, such as the Rockin’ Burger Block Party on Nov. 6 (with special guest Buddy “Cake Boss” Valastro), special brunches with celebrity guests and cheese seminars almost every Saturday. Beverages at the Food & Wine Fest are just as important as the food, and Epcot offers 72 new drinks this year alone, as well as daily mixology and wine seminars. Hotels near the Disney resort are supporting the influx of food-lovers with events of their own. Less than 1 mile from Disney, the Waldorf Astoria Orlando and Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek is hosting Food & Wine Weekends through Nov. 15,

featuring craft beer tastings, a Macaroon Bar, wine flights and more. Families can also get a taste of farm-tofood goodness at Grande Lakes Orlando, a 500-acre resort northeast of Disney that is composed of The Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott Orlando. The resort has an 18,000-square-foot Whisper Creek Farm on property, and items grown there grace the menus at all of the eateries on property, including Highball & Harvest at the Ritz-Carlton and The Kitchen, the new restaurant at the Marriott. Grande Lakes Orlando has multiple pools, a lazy river, a golf course, a fullservice spa and a fitness center, so there is plenty for families to do when they aren’t noshing though the signature dishes at The Kitchen (try the pretzels with cheese fondue), sampling the spirits and Southern fare at Highball & Harvest, or trying one of the hand-crafted beers created at The Brewery, the first in-house nanobrewery in any Marriott hotel. The Brewery’s seasonal beers are served throughout the resort, so moms and dads can indulge in the Brewery’s signature “Surplus ale poolside while the kids raft along the lazy river, or indulge in a tasting at Highball & Harvest while the kids check out the impressive Ritz Kids program. Grande Lakes is getting in on the Food & Wine Fest action with JW Griffin’s Little Griffin Cooking School on Oct. 31, when little guests are invited to walk through the Whisper Creek Farm, carve pumpkins and drink warm apple cider. The resort also has JW Griffin Cooking School events, pub crawls and other culinary events throughout the year, which are listed on its website at GrandeLakes.com.

HAPPY TRAILS If you want to see where some of your favorite beverages are made, it’s time to hit the trail. Several wineries in South and Central Florida offer wine tours, including Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards in Clermont (north of Orlando), Henscratch Farms Vineyard and Winery in Lake Placid, and Schnebly Redland’s Winery & Brewery in Homestead.

Schnebly Redland’s Winery tours are offered every hour from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and the property also has Friday and Saturday night parties with live music, wine tastings and food from its Redlander Restaurant, which offers farm-to-table dining. If you’re more into micro-brewed beer, a website, brewtrail.com/florida-breweries, will let you plan your own craft brewery tour. Or you can plan an extended date night and explore the craft beer scene in northern Palm Beach County with the “Beach, Brews & Selfies” package at the Jupiter Beach Resort & Spa. The resort’s package, offered seasonally, includes a room at the four-diamond, oceanside resort, plus a beer flight tasting of local brews at Sinclair’s Lounge, roundtrip transportation to one of the local brew stops on the resort’s map, and breakfast for two in the morning. The resort also has a full-service spa with a eucalyptus steam room and drinkable dark chocolate to add to your getaway experience. Popular bars such as Guanabanas and U-Tiki were on the Jupiter Beach Resort's map this year, as well as The Square Grouper tiki bar at Castaways Marina. If you want a shorter craft-beer adventure, a number of craft breweries opened throughout South Florida this year, including Barrel of Monks Brewing in Boca Raton, Bangin’ Banjo Brewing Company in Pompano Beach, and several breweries in Wynwood.

THE BEST

skiing in the South

BY JANET GROENE oes your family need a healthy dose of Jack Frost fun this winter? You don’t have to go out west or even to Vermont. The highest ski resort east of the Rockies is actually in the South, just over 800 miles from Fort Lauderdale. North Carolina’s High Country, 1½ to 2 hours from Asheville, has three major ski resorts. Beech Mountain Resort is highest. There, you can ski 98 acres of slopes with 15 scenic ski trails, eight lifts, great runs on the freestyle terrain, snow tubing, a big choice of accommodations nearby and a sky-high eatery offering food, beverages and sweeping views at an altitude of 5,506 feet. The largest vertical drop is claimed by Sugar Mountain ski area, which has a 5,300-foot summit, 20 trails and six lifts. Appalachian Ski Mountain, home of the French-Swiss Ski College and an Official Burton Learn to Ride Center, is the area’s oldest. Compared with many other ski areas, the South’s mountains are not only closer but more affordable. Throughout the area, all-access lift tickets are less than $40 juniors and $50 adults, and accommodations start at less than $80. Boone, N.C., even has familiar chain motels such as Quality Inn, La Quinta and Comfort Suites. If you choose not to drive up, two commercial airports give a wide choice of flights from MIA, FLL or

PBI. Fly into Charlotte or Asheville and rent a car. You can pack light with no need to buy a winter wardrobe. A full menu of equipment rentals is available, including (at Beech Mountain) winter coats, ski pants and bibs. At ice rinks, skates are also available for rent. Best of all for South Florida families, the resorts are especially kid-friendly. Nurseries care for infants and toddlers while expert instructors welcome ages 3 and up at all skill levels. Check each resort for its own features. At Beech Mountain, Snow Kamp is for ages 3 to 5. Traxx is an all-day program for children ages 6 to 14 at any level of experience. At Traxx, skills are assessed and then appropriate instruction completes the child’s day. Priced at $100, it includes a helmet, snacks, lunch and lift ticket. Private lessons are also available, and at certain times, sessions are offered for children with mental or physical challenges. They fill quickly, so reserve well ahead. When visiting at other times, ask about adaptive equipment and instruction (including sit skis) for family members with special needs. Beech Mountain also has a Burton Learn to Ride Program for snowboarding. Beech’s Meadows Park is for beginning snowboarders. The Powder Bowl Terrain Park is for intermediate to advanced shredders. Reservations are recommended for all instruction services. Whether you’re skiing the slopes or prefer to loll by the fireside, the Beech Mountain area offers many pleasures. In addition to the resorts’ own ski lodges, warmed by huge stone fireplaces and bright with picture windows that overlook the snow scene, resort areas offer a brewery, game rooms, ice rink, restaurants and shops. The town of Beech Mountain has a sledding hill with its own snow-making machine, assuring plenty of snowy fun for children ages 12 and younger. Bring your own saucer or rent one (plastic sleds required). The community also maintains 30 miles of snowshoe trails and offers snowshoe

family » travel rentals and optional guides through its Parks and Recreation Department. Showshoe trails range from moderate to strenuous. Experienced snowshoers can tackle the Emerald Outback trails at the top of the mountain. If you want just a sample of snowshoe trekking, walk the 1/3 mile track surrounding the Buckeye Recreation Center. Snow tubing is offered by Hawksnest Tubing Park in Seven Devils. Beech’s Buckeye Recreation Center is open all year with a playroom for children under 12, plus tennis, volleyball, basketball and a fitness room. In fact, the entire region is a year-round destination popular for golf courses, zip lines, high-altitude views in summer, blazing fall colors and springtime wildflowers. Lodging in the area is easy. Book your stay in a room, suite, chalet, cabin, vacation home or bed and breakfast inn. Each ski resort’s website lists nearby lodgings, many of them with kitchens and multiple

bedrooms to accommodate families. Many are also dog friendly, and the community of Beech Mountain has a Bark Park with two fenced play areas, one for larger dogs and one for small. North Carolina’s ski mountains get about 90 inches of natural snowfall each year, which the resorts supplement with snow-making equipment. It’s fun to visit the websites any time to get a live weather report and views from on-site cameras. The snowy vistas just might inspire a trip of your own. SPECIAL NEEDS RESOURCE GUIDE

Miracle League starts season in Delray Beach BY GARY CURRERI Forum Publishing Group report

very Saturday afternoon, at the Anthony V. Pugliese V field at Robert P. Miller Park, dozens of special needs athletes, along with their parents, supporters and buddies, make dreams come true. “It is basically a party with baseball as the theme,” said Julia Kadel, of Delray Beach, who along with her husband, Jeff, founded the league 10 years ago. “We are playing music, and I am announcing all of the kids as they come to bat or who is on base. I am making sure all of the fans in the stands are cheering. We just have a blast! “The tears and the smiles are about equal, and those are tears of joy,” she said. “Fun is an understatement. I don’t know if there is even a word for how much fun we have. It is an overwhelming amount of joy. It is indescribable. You forget how much you take for granted in life. You watch these players, and the small amount of work it takes to go from home plate to first base is a huge challenge for some people.” The Kadels incorporated the league in 2005 and used the Bucky Dent Baseball School infield from 2007 to 2010 until they started to play their games on their own field. The Kadels,

E

through public and private donations, raised $550,000 to build an accessible field complete with recycled rubber and ramps for wheelchairs. There are about 250 fields in the country similar to the Delray Field. “We are very spiritual, and there were a lot of things that definitely fell into place, and it was definitely meant to be,” Kadel said. She is hoping to get lights to play night games at Miller Park, in addition to offering additional sports. Kadel said they are also looking to expand to a north Palm Beach County location. The Miracle League offers a fall and spring season. There are nearly 80 players that began play the first weekend in October, and Kadel also started a cheerleading squad this season. Each player and cheerleader is paired up with a community, able-bodied volunteer. They play three games, consisting of two innings each, and there are six teams in the league. Players and volunteers come from Miami to Jupiter. “It is non-competitive,” said Kadel, whose three sons - Connor, 21; Zachary, 17; and Jackson, 11 - have also contributed greatly to the program. “Everybody bats. Everybody hits, and usually the last batter hits a home run. Once in a while, the kids get ambi-

SPECIAL NEEDS RESOURCE GUIDE

Disney characters open whole new world for autistic son BY FARAN FAGEN

hen Owen Suskind was 6, his dad crawled under his covers, seeking a specific doll. Once he found it, Ron Suskind curled his hand over the bedspread, holding the feisty parrot Iago from Disney’s “Aladdin” so it faced Owen. Dad then delivered his best impersonation of Gilbert Gottfried (the quirky actor who lent his voice to the Disney classic). “So Owen, wait a minute, how does it feel to be you?” dad squawked. “I’m lonely, and I don’t have any friends,” Owen muttered. It was the first potent conversation Ron and Owen had shared since Owen was diagnosed with autism at age 3, when he lost all speech. But the Suskind family knew Owen was still in there, waiting to return to his true self, like Simba in “The Lion King.” The father-son recreation of this Iago bedroom scene greets you when you visit www.ronsuskin. com, in the form of a video created by Roger Ross Williams, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker who is compiling a documentary based on Suskind’s book, “Life, Animated.” Ron Suskind is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist and best-selling author of six books, including “Life, Animated: A Story of Sidekicks, Heroes, and Autism,” published in 2014. The memoir describes the Suskind family’s two-decade journey in connecting with Owen, who fell in love with Disney movies. Once Suskind, his wife, Cornelia, and oldest son, Walter, discovered Owen’s affinity, they began to play the roles of animated Disney characters to communicate with Owen as he relearned to speak. You can hear Suskind’s story firsthand on Nov. 14 at an event at JAFCO (Jewish Adoption and Family Care Options) in Sunrise. “Cocktails and Conversation with Ron Suskind” will start at 8 p.m. at JAFCO’s new Children’s Ability Center at 5100 N. Nob Hill Road.

Tours of the newly opened Children’s Ability Center will be offered 6:30-7:45 p.m. during the cocktail reception and VIP reception. JAFCO’s location is fitting for Suskind’s story, as the new Ability Center offers respite, therapy and many other programs for children on the autism spectrum and other special needs children. “We are so grateful to Ron Suskind for his willingness to come to JAFCO and share his story, said Linda Sachs, JAFCO community outreach and parent support specialist. “He’ll provide inspiration and hope to so many families searching for pathways to help their children to communicate and succeed. “Life, Animated is the No. 1 bestseller under the category of Special Needs Biographies on Amazon, and it also made The New York Times best-seller list under Science Books. In the memoir, Suskind details how the family and therapists aided Owen in connecting Disney dialogue and themes to real life in order to relate to others

through “affinity therapy.â€? In Owen’s case, his love for Disney connected him to the world. “It was our only way to know our son,â€? said Suskind, who has spoken about his family’s success with Owen on programs such as “CBS Sunday Morningâ€? and “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.â€? Suskind has also shared his story with audiences at the United Nations and the National Institute of Health (NIH). Returning to the Williams video, dad asks Owen which Disney sidekick he’s thinking about. Son responds “Rafiki,â€? the wise mentor monkey from “The Lion King.â€? “The past hurts,â€? Rafiki tells Simba as he contemplates his destiny to become king. “You can either run from it or learn from it.â€? The video ends with Mufasa’s famous words from the clouds: “Remember who you are, Simba, you are my son and the one true king. ‌ Remember who you are.â€? Dad asks, “Who are you, Owen?â€? and Owen replies, “Your son,â€? and they lov-

ingly shake hands. Writing this story, I thought of my son, Spencer, diagnosed with autism when he was also 3. He barely spoke when diagnosed, but through intensive therapies and the help of organizations like JAFCO, he now has full-blown conversations at age 8, and we couldn’t be more proud. For the past year or so, Spencer’s developed a strong “affinity for Katy Perry. When she sang at the halftime show of the Super Bowl (and we recorded it), he couldn’t stop talking and smiling. Since then, we’ve watched Katy Perry ride onto the football field on that monstrous tiger more than 100 times. When Spencer is watching Katy, he’s more relaxed, and as a result, he’s happier and more open to conversation. Coincidence? As Katy Perry might say, “this is how he do. IF YOU GO For more information on the JAFCO event featuring Ron Suskind and how to attend, visit www.jafco.org.

Miniature horses making a super-sized difference in children’s lives BY JOANIE COX-HENRY

andra Seiden watched her special needs son’s personality transform after two miniature ponies came into his life. The Boca Raton mother of four was so moved by what she witnessed, she knew she couldn’t keep this just for her own child. “Jacob was almost completely non-verbal in the beginning,” said Seiden, whose son is now 16 but began pony therapy as a young boy. “He said about four to six words, but his expressive language

exploded after getting these ponies.” Seiden is now the Florida state director for Personal Ponies, a national nonprofit organization that provides miniature Shetland pony visits to hospitals, schools, nursing homes, veteran hospitals and special needs children as well as to children experiencing emotional difficulties. “I began communicating with the national founder of Personal Ponies after doing research on the Internet on the benefit of therapeutic pony time,” Seiden said. “I’m an equestrian and a firm believer that the relationship with a horse begins on the ground, not the horse’s back.” As Seiden shared her son’s story, parents began bringing their children to her 5-acre private farm in west Boca Raton to meet the Shetland ponies that were changing people’s lives. “We were then asked to come to schools and hospitals for visits with the ponies,” Seiden said. “We’ve also worked with Alzheimer’s patients. We work with all children. Some were born with the illnesses they currently have, some have had accidents, and some children are hurting inside. We have seen hundreds of Boys and Girls Club kids.” Seiden sees children at the barn regularly for one-on-one pony time. “We can adapt the experience for each child, so every child can participate in their own unique way. We also feed the ponies. I’ll sit a child on the ground and feed the pony hay right out of my lap.” Some of the benefits Seiden said par-

ents have reported to her after the sessions have been dramatically positive. “Parents notice their children following directions more and even being more aware of other’s feelings,” Seiden said. “Following the body language of the horse is important, too. If these kids can walk away from the barn with an ‘I can’ attitude, we’ve done our jobs.” Relying completely on the goodwill of volunteers and donations from the community, Seiden is continuously seeking new volunteers to help with all aspects of Personal Ponies. There is no fee for the program. Seiden asks for donations when it’s possible for parents to give, and she has fundraisers to support the organization. “The real magic of this program is our volunteers and community involvement. Without them, we couldn’t exist. For many special needs kids, the phone isn’t typically ringing off the hook for play dates,” Seiden said. “These ponies become their ponies, and watching the growth I’ve been seeing over the past 12 years has been so rewarding. There are several children who have been with us since the beginning. It’s amazing to see how their attention span has improved with these ponies. To be on this journey with them has been such a wonderful thing. It only takes a moment to make a difference.” Now going into its 13th year this January, Personal Ponies Florida is working with six ponies and continues to be involved with various community events, such as The Buddy Walk to benefit Down Syndrome. “If a parent is interested in getting their child involved with our program, they can contact me on our website to set up a slot,” Seiden said. “We’ve taken people from birth to 103 into this program. The highest-functioning child who’s having a tough time watching his parents divorce is also entitled to the program and needs the program just as much as the kid with cerebral palsy or spina bifida. There’s a little special need in all of us.”

Gratitude of

Teaching Children the Power

BY GAYLA GRACE

“Nobody likes her, Mom. She’s the hardest teacher at my school. I don’t know how I’m going to survive her class.” My son’s complaints after the first week of school prompted me to consider a lesson for him on the power of gratitude, even amidst challenge. Although he would have rather complained about his English teacher’s assignments and made excuses for doing poorly in her class, I wanted him to understand that if he changed his thinking, the outcome would be better. Teaching our kids how to create and maintain a grateful spirit, regardless of what life throws their way, gives them a huge advantage. Robert Emmons, a leading expert on the science of gratitude, says, “Gratitude has the power to heal, energize and change lives.” Gratitude is not thinking happy thoughts and expecting life to get better. Gratitude is “the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness” (oxforddictionaries. com). I knew I couldn’t convince my teenage son to be thankful for a teacher he disliked. But if I presented gratitude from a different angle, I could change his perspective. “Nathan, have you considered being thankful for the opportunity to be in Mrs. Carter’s class?” I asked. “She’s an honors 54

southfloridaparenting.com |

054_057 Gratitude.indd 54

teacher and not everyone qualifies to be in her class. I know she’s challenging, but she’s preparing you for professors you will have in college.” Nathan balked at my comments at first and didn’t want to consider the positives. As we talked about it more, however, he acknowledged the advantages. Gratitude for less-than-perfect circumstances is harder than gratitude when life has few problems. But when we teach our children to look for the good in their day instead of focusing on the challenges, we give them tools for adulthood. Dr. Martin Seligman, commonly known as the founder of Positive Psychology, has conducted extensive research on the positive effects of gratitude and mood. His exercise, Three Blessings, seems too simple to make a difference, but research shows otherwise. Participants are asked to take 10 minutes every night before going to bed to write down three things that went well today and why they went well. For example, if your child comments on making a new friend at school, he would record, “I made a new friend today” with a reason why, such as, “because I shared my cookies at lunch.” Ask your child to do the exercise 3-4 times one week and see if you notice a difference. Research has proven the exercise works. After only seven days,

participants reported increased happiness and decreased depressive symptoms that had a lasting effect for six months, even if they didn’t continue the exercise. Seligman’s research has convinced therapists and psychologists that exercises focusing on gratitude help increase one’s well-being. Gratitude allows us to live in the present and focus on the moment instead of wishing for a different scenario and grumbling about our lot. We move from a spectator position to an active player when we accept our circumstances and consider the good in them. At a recent appointment, our son’s orthodontist placed a MARA in his mouth, an appliance intended to move the jaw and correct his bite. As Nathan read through the brochure that explained the apparatus, I could hear gratitude emphasized. “The Mara is used to encourage forward growth of the lower jaw. You are LUCKY to have this appliance.” I can’t remember the rest, but I do

56

southfloridaparenting.com |

054_057 Gratitude.indd 56

remember my son’s reaction to the word in capital letters. He burst out laughing as sarcasm rolled off his tongue. “I’m lucky, it says, Mom. Lucky to have an appliance that prevents me from eating what I want. Lucky to have a sore jaw for the next year. Lucky, yeah, right.” I appreciated the brochure’s attempt to help teenagers consider the positives of wearing an uncomfortable appliance. Nathan didn’t feel lucky as he sat at the dinner table that evening with limited options. I acknowledged his feelings, but then continued the discussion to help him consider a positive angle. Another way to promote gratitude with children is through a gratitude journal. If you find your child grumbles about the happenings of his day, consider this simple exercise that can be done together. Purchase two journals and sit down in the evening to write out one or two things you’re thankful for from the day. Make it fun with a young child by

including stickers to express their thoughts. Within a few short days, you’ll notice the difference it makes for you and your child when you retrain your thoughts and focus on the positives in your life. Teaching our children the power of gratitude cultivates healthy self-esteem, strong connectedness with others, and a general sense of life satisfaction that sets them up for success.

“It’s not happiness that brings us gratitude, it’s gratitude that brings us happiness.” —Unknown Gayla Grace writes and speaks on family and stepfamily issues and seeks to incorporate gratitude in her life daily.

It's not ALL about the turkey By Dana Brillante-Peller Pellerini Proclaims

Thanksgiving is almost here. This holiday, though, has morphed into a lot more than turkey and cranberry sauce. It’s a day to get together with friends and family; watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade (my all-time favorite!); watch some great football; and, of course, shop on Black Friday. Weeks before this day arrives, Black Friday is splattered all over the newspapers and online. Everyone knows to beware or prepare for this particular Friday every year. HISTORY OF BLACK FRIDAY The holiday shopping season starts the day after Thanksgiving; it has been this way since 1924, when Macy’s held its first

Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City. The last float in the parade is Santa Claus on his sleigh waving to the crowds as a reminder: Christmas is coming. Better start shopping for those gifts for your family and friends. HOW TO PREPARE FOR BLACK FRIDAY I have friends who have a family tradition around Black Friday. They enjoy Thanksgiving with family and friends (a bit earlier in the day than customary), then take a nap to store as much energy as possible. They need to be on their A-game for the maddening crowds and waiting in lines for the stores to open, hoping to get those special gifts that are marked down just for this day.

How else do they prepare? They recommended the following: Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Pack a folding chair in your car in case

» »

you have to wait in long lines. You’ll be more comfortable sitting down. If you are in colder climates, pack a blanket. Bring a book, tablet or anything else that can help pass time while waiting in line. Bring refreshments, the most popular being carafes of coffee. Also bring fruit such as bananas or apples or even a protein bar to sustain energy. Do your research. A lot of the big box stores display their advertisements way ahead of time, so check them to plot where you need to go to get the lowest prices for the items on your shopping list. Have fun. It’s not worth the aggravation of pushing and shoving and possibly bickering to get something on your list. “Tis the season,” remember? And don’t forget – Cyber Monday is next.

a dad's view to the doctor’s office, cough medicine with codeine, steroids (oral and nasal), penicillin, another kind of antibiotic, a chest x-ray, and an inhaler. I spent seven weeks spitting, hacking, sleeping upright in my recliner, and wondering if I would need to finish my manuscript wearing angel wings. I lost 8 pounds. During this time, Mattie had work that required her to go out of town, not once, but twice, and they weren’t short trips. She was gone for five days, home for four days, during which my in-laws (whom I love dearly) visited, and then Mattie left for another eight days. My medicine bottles received more attention than my computer keys. I fell behind on chores around the house. My To-Do list grew longer than Santa’s list of good boys and girls; but unlike St. Nick, I don’t have a workshop full of elves. A few days before the planned Thanksgiving trip, I reluctantly informed Mattie of my decision to stay home to work. I added, “I feel like a hypocrite because I tell my readers to cherish the moments. How can I miss Thanksgiving with my family?” Mattie, knowing that I really needed the time, responded, “It’s OK. You need to cherish the moments with yourself right now.” Wow, I married well. As I chew my Thanksgiving sub tomorrow, a number of thoughts will likely cross my mind. This isn’t my mother-in-law’s turkey. It’s OK, Sadie, jump up on the sofa beside me. Most importantly, I can’t wait for Mattie and Jessie to return. My man chair works just fine; I don’t need a whole house to myself. Yet I will also be thankful for the peace and quiet, something we all need at times. That doesn’t make me a hypocrite. Until next month, remember to cherish the moments. Happy Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving Day 2014 update: It turned out that the sub place closed for Thanksgiving. Fortunately, the Chinese restaurant didn’t. I enjoyed my meal, though it wasn’t nearly as good as my mother-in-law’s turkey.

IT’S NEVER TOO SOON to think about college By Elizabeth Roberts

There was a tiny baby with a long future in my arms, and teaching her about money was the last thing on my mind. Almost. As soon as my daughter’s birth certificate was in my hand, we filled out the forms already waiting on my desk and bought into a pre-paid college tuition plan. Thirty months later, we did the same for my newborn son. Why? Because despite the flaws in Florida’s prepaid tuition plan, the general wisdom holds: College plans are one of the best investments around. One reason is that increases in tuition at private and public institutions alike historically have outstripped what even tax-sheltered investments earn. The other

reason is peace of mind – knowing college won’t be ruled out even if circumstances change. We couldn’t afford an entire plan, which provides a four-year education at a greatly discounted price if it is purchased years in advance. But we made a healthy down payment and bought a year, and we have been contributing ever since. College was too far into the future for our kids to envision when we bought the plan, but the monthly statements and the monthly check we write have taught both of our children the importance of planning for a future. The college plan is one way I have used teachable moments to illustrate how responsible financial decisions are made.

My children are learning, one age-appropriate lesson at a time. But where does a parent start such lessons? At what age? Trust Grandma to know. My daughter, Sarah, said the first time she realized money had value “was the way Grandma wrapped her presents, with those bows.” Born in the throes of the Great Depression and put into an orphanage so her divorced mother could work, my mother (Sarah’s grandmother) spent her life practicing saving as an art form.

financial » matters After she divorced my father, she put herself through three college degrees by working and going to school simultaneously while raising us. Teetering on an extension ladder, she painted her own three-story house in Bar Harbor, Maine, and turned it into a bed-and-breakfast when we left home, a business she single-handled operated for 30 years. And all of her presents mailed to her grandchildren in Florida came wrapped in Sunday’s color comics, topped with a handmade bow. It wasn’t just any bow. It was carefully fan-folded from a dollar bill and secured with a wire. As soon as Sarah was old enough to unwrap her own gifts, she learned she should shove the comics into the trash bag – without the bow. She carefully unfolded that dollar and stuffed it into her piggy bank along with the 25 cents she earned each time she made any attempt to make her bed. As a result, she said, “I always kind of knew that money was worth something.” Sarah had saved quite a bit by the time the ice cream truck discovered our neighborhood. She and Paul came running into the kitchen, and I gave each of them $2, the price of the second-cheapest ice cream. It was in the shadow of that truck, staring up at the photos of Sponge Bob popsicles, ice cream sandwiches and the amazing $3 Screwball, with its promise of a gumball in the bottom of a plastic cup, that she learned Lesson No. 2: the value of delayed gratification. Sarah remembers it this way: “I wondered how come some ice cream was worth more than others – $3 or $4 for some,” she said. “If I spent the $2 then, I would not be able to get ice cream next time. But if I spent $1, I could get a $1 ice cream then and $1 when she came back – and that was better than the $2 cookiesand-cream ice cream.” Because it was her money to spend – or save.

Physiological and safety needs are the most basic and the foundation for everything to come. But take a look at No. 3, the need for belonging. It is THAT important to our development. So you are not alone. Belonging is something we desire, crave and need.

So if you don’t breastfeed and all of your buddies do, this does not make you the devil. If you let your kids play outside until it gets dark, and everyone thinks you are crazy, parent the way you see fit. When you splurge and give your kids McDonalds, and everyone in your circle serves kale burgers, be loud and proud about standing up for America’s best French fry. When you let your kids watch TV instead of creating a schedule jampacked with organized activities, stand up for unscheduled time. If you have a nanny and your friends don’t, recognize you owe nobody an explanation of how you choose to live your life. When you let your daughter go to Publix in her pajama pants, rain boots and a tiara, be proud of her individuality rather than give in to the stares of judgment. We deserve not to be judged. We are entitled to raise our children in ways that we believe represent our values, ethics and morals. Talk with your partner, should you have one, and make parenting decisions as a couple. This is not to say that we shouldn’t strive to learn and research and work to become great parents. Hopefully we strive to do that every day, even when we fall short. Be true to your parenting style. Change if you wish. Learn what fits best for you and your family. Be loyal to yourself. Give yourself the same advice you may give to your children about individuality: Rock it, own it, be proud of who you are! Be yourself, and if you are having trouble fitting in with your current group, find a new one. stages » child

See Me, Hear Me, Love Me: The cornerstone of all development

BY KAREN DEERWESTER, ED.S.

See Me, Hear Me, Love Me Help Me

At this stage, every action, every thought, every feeling is creating for your child a self-portrait of who they are and what they need to grow. It’s up to us to see, hear and cherish that child and that expression ... even if the “portrait” has an extra eye or has legs coming out of the head.

The cornerstone of all development is to meet kids where they are so they can grow into themselves. If we don’t meet them where they are, we send them the message that where they are is WRONG. And that’s not a message we really mean to give. Stop and shift out of adult mode into kid mode so you really can see, hear and love your child in this particular crazymaking moment.

Young children do not and cannot see themselves “as they are” – nor should they. It is developmentally impossible; a child’s sense of self is “under construction.” They see themselves from the inside out, through the reflection in our eyes and from interacting in an oversized world. Remember when your toddler tried to climb into a too-small toy car to drive around the house? He knew he was bigger than the car, but he still didn’t know he didn’t fit inside. How about when your child bit her best friend or threw her favorite spaghetti in your face and then wanted it back again so she could finish it? They know, and they don’t know.

Grown-ups are inundated by all the usual distractions and pressures of a grown-up world that pulls them away from connecting with a child’s world:

» » » » » »

impatience distraction and busyness grown-up priorities and commitments (jobs, food, laundry, deadlines, etc.) embarrassment (parenting in public) comparing (fear & anxiety) the unknown (fear & anxiety)

But these aren’t going away any time soon. It’s best to accept them as “our world” and smile while we hit the “shift key” to “kid world.”

What’s the See Me, Hear Me, Love Me alternative?

1.

When your child’s emotions escalate, observe and listen. It’s a challenge for grown-ups to maturely express anger and frustration or to lovingly listen to sadness (remember how much we needed Sadness in the movie “Inside Out”). It takes tons more practice to acknowledge what your child feels. You want to be ready to seehear-love your child through all their feelings. Take a deep breath and bring out the most loving mirror you can hold by saying simple phrases like: I see you’re getting upset. I hear you are really mad about that. I am right here to help.

2.

Be on the same side ... that’s the unconditional love. Sometimes it feels like your child is deliberately pushing your buttons. Part of that is becoming a separate person from you - wanting everything “my way” even when your way is much easier. Sometimes, your child is really struggling and can’t stop themselves. That’s usually when they need us most not to give in or

stages » child to give up on them but to help them master challenging emotions or challenging demands. If your child is struggling with bedtime, it doesn’t help to change the routine or the expectations when they truly need sleep to rebuild body and brain. It also doesn’t help to work against them: “Do this now... or else!” What helps is to acknowledge that this is really hard (to turn off the day, to know that daddy checks on them when their eyes are closed, to believe that tomorrow is comingm and it’s going to be a fun day). And the grown-ups are here to help you, teach you, believe in you – by checking on you, reading your favorite stories or singing your favorite songs, and by staying consistent even when you are uncertain and confused.

3.

Connect the dots for them – teaching and waiting for learning to catch up. Is there anything worse that facing a steep learn-

ing curve and someone demanding perfection? Children need us to stay focused on their potential and their success while they are learning – no, they will not wear diapers to kindergarten, and no, they will not bite friends or enemies forever. They are smart, capable and successful, yet they do need someone smarter than they are to show them how to do challenging and complicated things, such as reading, writing and coding. Short-cuts and easy praise won’t take them to their fullest potential, but a parent who is willing to listen and engage every step of the way will.

4.

Believe that what you know is enough for today. It’s not easy to think for two – to imagine what your child feels and needs. It’s not easy to remember what it’s like to be a toddler, a preschooler or a kindergartner. But that little person still lives within you, and you have a lifetime of experience to help and support your child. Your child doesn’t need a know-it-all, perfect parent.

Your child needs a parent who understands his mistakes and his need for help. Your child needs someone who loves him exactly as he is today, right now. Caterpillars do become butterflies. You just have to nurture and protect the caterpillar who moves way too slowly and isn’t quite as beautiful in this stage. Your butterfly will fly! But please don’t ask the caterpillar to fly. He really can’t do it ... yet.

The Spy {Who Loved Facebook} BY MARGARET SAGARESE Are you one of the gazillion on Facebook? Why did you sign on? Nearly half of parents who logged onto Facebook that first day did so for the primary purpose of spying on their kids. According to a recent survey of 1,000 parents with kids ranging in age from 13 to 30, 93 percent of those parents check their child’s profile every day, reported Peggy Drexler, a Weill Cornell Medical College research psychologist. Mothers were 14 percent more likely than dads to do so. And parents with kids as old as 30 checked a child’s relationship status daily. Is cyber-snooping the best way to track your children’s whereabouts, well-being or social life? No! Technology has invaded every aspect of our lives. However, it’s no substitute for parent-child communication. Snooping with a tween’s password to track private posts, see private messages or intercept e-mails might be the fastest way into his or her private life, but hardly the wisest. Why? In a word: trust. Consider this: You stealthily learn that your 14-year-old went to a party (while lying to you about “sleeping over at Vicky’s”). Now what? You confront your little sneak with the party goods. She counters with, “How do you know? Oh, you snooped! How could you! You violated my privacy!” Now you are the sneak. The conversation shifts from her dishonest behavior to your dishonest behavior. Gotcha! This is a new-age version of “two wrongs don’t make a right.” And next time, your tween will amp up her stealth tactics by telling you less and erasing any techno footprint.

The Tween’s Right to Privacy Young adolescents develop a craving for privacy about age 12. The most obvious signal lies in how tweens spend more time in their bedrooms and less shadowing their parents or their siblings in the family room. This is normal, a kind of separation dance. It entails stonewalling questions, volunteering less information about their activities and friends, and talking less in general, unless it’s a mouthy “It’s not fair” rant. That’s why it’s called the battle for independence. The idea that a 13-year-old wants a private life in a world saturated with sexualized messages and temptations like prescription drugs and vaping who-knows-what is downright scary. Given that tweens prefer their friends, thus making them vulnerable to peer pressure, escalates their risk and your terror. Yet the truth is that our tweenagers need a private domain. Only within personal space can they figure out who they are becoming as individuals. Sons and daughters cannot firmly sign onto a parent’s code of values and behavior if they haven’t privately mulled over these ethics, experimented and decided on their rightness.

The Parent’s Rights as the Adult Slip-ups and misjudgments are part of the process. So your hardest predicament is how to juggle a tween’s need to grow with your needto-know responsibility as a parent in order to keep them safe. Young adolescents need supervision. It is your right and your role to keep tabs on your tweens. Ten- to 15-year-olds are in the midst of so many changes. Their bodies change from child to teenager. Their minds expand. Their emotions intensify. Hormones flood them with new degrees of not only separation from you, but new highs of adventure, lust and love, and new lows of self-consciousness, moodiness and depression.

70

southfloridaparenting.com |

070_071 StagesPreteen.indd 70

As their brains grow, they envision a larger world with more opportunities (good and bad), but don’t yet have all the brain parts to evaluate the risks vs. the rewards. That’s where your boundaries and strategies come in. You should always know where your tweens are going and if they will be supervised by an adult. You have a right to that information, and you must explain that right and responsibility to your child – no ifs, ands or buts. You are entitled to impose curfews and limits on their plans and electronic devices and their usage. Routines you organize, family Sunday dinners or visits to grandparents, chores or outside activities, these rituals relay your values, values you want your tweens to learn and, hopefully, live themselves. AS FOR SOCIAL MEDIA, HERE IS A GUIDELINE: Let them know that you can access their pages on Facebook or Pinterest if you want to. Teach them this golden posting rule: If you wouldn’t want your grandmother, a college admissions officer or a future boss to view the picture or the comment, don’t post it. Nothing ever disappears on the computer. Even Snapchat stuff can be retrieved by the techno-skilled.

Be the Smart, Subtle Spy Who Empowers Your Tween Meshing the needs of a prickly, secretive tweenager with the rules of the household isn’t nearly as incendiary as you might think. The answer is as simple as giving your tween the perk of a bedroom makeover. Chances are that your 11-year-old has outgrown the fairy princess motif or the cars-and-trucks bed ensemble. Ask your tween how to update their bedroom to reflect their new phase of life: oncoming adolescence. Some kids have more of the Property Brothers in them than others. But any kid will hit a Target-like store for new bedding and a beanbag chair. Encourage kids to fill up a new bulletin board. It will be covered with photographs and minutia that you may not understand. Tickets from a game, or a cup that someone they have a crush on drank from, celebrity pics from magazines or sports imagery. Install a shelf or a get baskets or tubs for books and such. Never resist their request to buy the middle school yearbook. And if the photos these days are more often on Facebook than on paper, subscribe to a service like Groovebook.com that allows you to take photos from your smartphone and electronically send them in to be made into real pictures. Get a scrapbook for kids to fill with the theme of their choice, like best friends or best vacation. There’s a method to this makeover madness. Everything you need to know will be around that bedroom: Who his friends are. What activities she loves. What’s happening at school. Sitting side by side on that new bedspread, you will find out who’s the coolest, meanest and cutest in 6th grade. Add a family calendar where everyone jots in their schedules. Now you won’t have to be a spy who loves Facebook to know what’s inside your tween’s head and heart.
