Diagnosing and treating strep throat BY DR. ROSE ROSA-OLIVARES A sore throat can be a painful experience for any child. Diagnosing the cause is vital to getting the right treatment so your child can feel better as soon as possible. It’s also important to know if your child is contagious so you take precautions to protect the rest of your family. When your child says, “my throat feels sore,” take a look at any other symptoms. If your son or daughter has a cough, runny nose, red eyes or hoarseness when talking, the cause is probably a virus. Even though that sounds serious, a sore throat from a viral infection will usually clear up in a few days. Help your child feel comfortable, and just wait it out. However, your child might also have “strep throat,” which is caused by group Astreptococcus bacteria. Other serious infections, including scarlet fever and pneumonia, are also caused by these kinds of bacteria. Strep throat is contagious and can be passed along by coughing, sneezing or even shaking hands. Fortunately, sharing books, mobile devices or computers usually doesn’t spread the infection. From pre-schoolers to teenagers, most children will be exposed to strep bacteria at some point in their lives. Once exposure occurs, it usually takes about three days for a painful sore throat to develop. Other symptoms of strep throat may include fever, stomach pain and red or swollen tonsils. If your child says, “It’s hard for me to swallow,” you should see a provider to determine if it is astreptococcus infection. Before you go, call your doctor or urgent care center and ask, “Do you perform group A strep by DNA?” This is a new diagnostic tool that can identify the DNA of the bacteria in your child’s throat and provide you and your doctor with highly accurate results. Older tests, known as the “rapid strep test,” may give false positives, resulting in children being given antibiotics needlessly. If the test is positive for strep, your doctor will prescribe an appropriate antibiotic medication and schedule a follow-up in about 10 days. Most patients feel better a day or two after starting antibiotics. Their other symptoms will gradually disappear, and they will no longer be contagious. But it’s important for your child to take all the antibiotics, even when feeling better, to

reduce the risk of a relapse. TIPS FOR PARENTS Here are some tips to help a child with strep throat: + Give water, ginger ale or other clear liquids, especially when your child has a fever. + Don’t offer acidic citrus juices or colas or coffee with caffeine because they can irritate the throat. + Soups, warm cocoa, gelatin desserts, puddings or flan can be soothing to your child. + Help your child get plenty of rest, including naps. You may want to limit use of a smartphone, tablet or computer, so your son or daughter can relax at home. + Make sure all family members wash their hands frequently to avoid passing the bacteria to others. + Don’t let your child share food, drinks, napkins or towels with other family members.

+ Tell your child to sneeze or cough into a tissue. Signs that your child is feeling better include more energy, less desire to sleep and a greater appetite. At that point, your child will be well on the way to resuming normal activities, including returning to school after 48 hours. Remember that treatment for strep throat is highly effective, provided you have the right diagnosis. The quick “rapid strep test” is not as accurate as the DNA version. When strep throat is suspected, go to a provider that offers the DNA test. Though the results may take 60 minutes, compared with the five-minute rapid version, you’ll have peace of mind knowing you will have a definitive result.

South Florida’s best: When we started planning our October magazine cover a few months ago, we asked readers to show us their favorite family costume looks, and families throughout South Florida responded. Families re-created famous looks from classic movies, such as “The Wizard of Oz,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Beetlejuice” and “The Addams Family.” They dressed like superheroes and race car drivers. Some families even got their pets involved, such as the Harder family from Miami. South Florida Parenting photographed the Harders – dad Josh, mom Maribel, sister Ashley and brother Justin – with their dog Bailey for our cover this month. Some of our readers’ photos are featured below, and you can see many more online at SouthFloridaParenting.com

Fall Harvest Celebration Ideas BY DENISE MORRISON YEARIAN hay and oversized scarecrow-type clothing items. Teammates line up at the other end of the room. To play, teammates take turns running to the scarecrow and dressing him with one clothing item then tag the next player who does the same. When the scarecrow is completely dressed, each teammate returns a second time to stuff straw in his clothing. The first team to finish making their scarecrow wins.

If you’re planning a fall harvest or Halloween party at home or in your child’s classroom, you might want to consider these craft, game and food ideas for seasonal fun: CROP OF CRAFTS When doing crafts with kids in a group setting, plan a main craft with a short, second activity — coloring pages or stringing popcorn — for early finishers. Whatever crafts you choose, pick ones that are easy to clean up so you can move on to the next activity. PAPER STRIP PUMPKIN. Measure and cut an orange rectangle from construction paper to fit around the toilet paper tube. Glue in place to create the pumpkin’s center base. Measure and cut 11, 1- by 12-inch strips from orange paper. Glue 1 strip to the upper, inside end of the toilet paper tube. Let dry. Repeat this step with remaining 10 strips. Place the detached end of each strip down and glue to the bottom, inside end of the tube. (Strips should bow out to create a rounded pumpkin.) Let dry. Draw and cut out a large leaf shape from green construction paper. Tape leaf to the top, inside section of the tube. BEAU THE SCARECROW. Draw and cut an 8-inch triangle from a paper bag to create the scarecrow’s hat. Fold one piece of yellow construction paper accordion style into 1/2-inch folds. Open paper flat and cut along the folds to create strips for straw hair. Place a paper plate bottom side up. Glue hair randomly to one edge of the plate. Glue hat over the hay hair, allowing some hay to show around the lower, outer edges of the hat. Cut a 1-inch triangle then glue to the center of the plate to create a nose. Cut two 1-inch circles from pink paper then glue onto the face to create the cheeks. Use black marker to create eyes, eyebrows and a mouth. Cut a 3-inch sunflower shape from yellow paper then glue to one side of the hat. Cut a 1-inch brown circle and glue to the center of sunflower. Cut ribbon into an 18-inch strip. Tie into a bow and attach with a glue gun to the bottom of the paper plate for the bow tie. SPECKLED LEAF SUNCATCHER. Measure and cut two 6-inch squares from black construction paper. Temporarily paper clip the two squares together then place paper on the table. Center a large maple leaf over the top, black square and trace

around it with a pencil. Use scissors to cut out the leaf pattern you drew, making sure you cut through both sheets of construction paper to form a hollowed-out leaf frame. Remove paper clips and set aside. Place crayon shavings between two sheets of waxed paper and iron until the shavings melt. Measure and cut the waxed paper design to a 5 ½-inch square. Place the multicolored design between the two black squares to create a stained-glass leaf picture and frame. Glue design in place. Punch a hole at the top, loop yarn through the hole and hang picture in a window. GATHERING FOR GAMES Games are a staple at kids’ gatherings. Choose ones every child can participate in, where no one is eliminated. With a little forethought and creativity, any game can be adapted to fit the fall theme. BROOM BALL. Purchase half-sized brooms for each party guest and two different colors of seasonal garland. Decorate half of the brooms with one color of garland and the remaining half with the other garland to specify teams. Establish goals at opposite ends of the yard, and divide the children into teams. Place a kickball in the center of the yard then give each child a broom to sweep the ball to his team’s goal. The first team to score five goals wins. RING AROUND THE PUMPKIN. Place three large pumpkins with stems in a line several feet apart. Gather four hula hoops. To play, children should take turn standing behind the designated tossing line and try to ring the pumpkins with the hula hoop. The child with the most rings wins. SCARECROW RELAY. Separate children into two teams. Choose one child from each team to be the scarecrow. Place scarecrows at one end of the room, along with

SEASONAL SNACKS Food is more fun when kids are involved in the preparation. Stick with things children like to eat and add a seasonal twist to it. POPCORN PUMPKINS. Pop 2 quarts of popcorn. Set aside. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of sugar, 1/3 cup of light corn syrup, 1/3 cup of water, ¼ cup of butter and ½ teaspoon of salt. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves. Reduce heat and cook until the mixture reaches approximately 270 degrees. Remove from heat and stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla and orange food coloring. Pour mixture over popcorn and stir until thoroughly coated. Grease hands and form popcorn into pumpkin-shaped balls. Break a few thin twisted pretzels to form an arch and push them into the top center for the stem. Makes approximately 12 pumpkins. ITSY-BITSY CARAMEL APPLES. Cut lollipop sticks in half. Use a melon baller to scoop little balls out of medium-sized apples, making sure each ball has a section of the apple peel. Push a lollipop stick into the peel of each apple ball. Blot apples dry with a paper towel. Melt a 14-ounce package of caramel candies with 2 tablespoons of water. Have children dip and swirl their apple balls in caramel then roll in crushed Oreo cookies, nuts, sprinkles, nonpareils or mini-chocolate chips. Place on waxed paper to cool for 15 minutes. PUMPKIN PANCAKES. Mix dry ingredients: 1 cup flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, 2 teaspoons baking soda, ¼ teaspoon salt and ½ teaspoon cinnamon. Set aside. Separate two eggs. Mix yolks with ½ cup of plain pumpkin puree, 1 cup milk and 2 tablespoons canola oil. Add dry ingredients. Beat egg whites until fluffy then fold into the batter. Pour ¼ cup of batter onto a greased griddle; flip when bubbles form on top. Kids can make jack-o-lantern faces using raisins, dried fruit, nuts, chocolate chips and whipped cream.

Halloween Safety Tips BY SARAH LYONS Pumpkins, costumes and candy – what could be better? Halloween is a fun time of year for kids of all ages, but as you gear up for Halloween, keep these safety tips in mind to keep everyone happy and ready for trick-or-treating. PUMPKINS When your family sits down to do the pumpkin carving, never allow kids to handle sharp objects. The carving should be done by adults only. Traditionally jack-o-lanterns were lit with candles, but consider using an LED light or glow stick to light your pumpkins on Halloween to keep both your own children and your

Snazaroo or Go Green Facepaint, may be a better option.

visiting trick-or-treaters safe. If you do use a candle, keep the pumpkin out of reach of curious little ones and pets. Because of South Florida’s warm and humid climate, don’t carve your pumpkin more than a day or two before Halloween, and keep it inside until the big night.

TRICK-OR-TREAT When you venture out to do some trick-or-treating, have your child carry a flashlight or wear a glow stick. Kids should always travel with an adult and stay together. Consider using a stroller, wagon or harness to contain your child or hold hands at all times as you walk. Use care to stay on sidewalks and only cross at street corners and crosswalks. It is best to visit homes where you know the residents, but if you do go to strangers’ homes, only approach if the porch light is on. Consider attending a fall festival or trunk-o-treat instead of going door-to-door in a neighborhood. Typically these activities are well-lit and offer a safer option for

COSTUMES When choosing a Halloween costume for your little one, pick something that is both comfortable and weather-appropriate. Also, choose bright colors for better visibility while out and about on Halloween evening. Parents should help their children pick a costume that is a comfortable length and will not cause your little one to trip and fall. Masks limit visibility and are uncomfortable for young children. Non-toxic face paints, such as

little ones and their families. CANDY Most Halloween candy will be a choking hazard for small kids. Hard candy, taffy, suckers, small toys and popcorn all present a choking hazard for babies. Carefully sort through the treat bag when you get home, and remove anything unsafe. Discard any homemade items unless they were received from a trusted source. Soft chocolates and crackers are usually OK for older babies to try. Make sure to thoroughly clean their teeth after their treats. Some charities like Operation Gratitude or Ronald McDonald House will accept donated Halloween candy and send to soldiers overseas in care packages. MORE HALLOWEEN TIPS Remember to be flexible when it comes to young children and holiday expectations. Many people enjoy putting up spooky decorations or wearing creepy costumes. These things can seem realistic to a small child and can be frightening. If they become scared, cut the night short and go home. Keep it simple on your first (or second) Halloween. Go out early, and only visit a few houses of friends and family you know. There will be many more years to come as your child grows and matures when you will enjoy all the Halloween festivities.

17 Things To Do with Pumpkins BY CAROL ALEXANDER It’s that time of year when pumpkins reign. If you want to get past the usual jack-o-lantern carving and tackle some other pumpkin ideas, try these art, cooking and learning activities with your kids.

1.

To make your pumpkins to last longer than carved jack-o-lanterns, draw the faces on them with permanent markers.

2.

Use pipe cleaners, paint or markers, and felt eyes to create insects out of your miniature pumpkins.

3. Create a funny Mr. Pumpkin Head using Mr. Potato Head pieces. 4. Use miniature pumpkins to create a centerpiece or other decorations for the season. Paint guests names on them and use as place cards for a dinner party.

5.

Carve out miniature pumpkins and fill the center with a votive candle or tea light. Line the walkway or porch rail with them for Halloween or another evening occasion.

9.

Monogram your largest pumpkin using thumb tacks.

10.

Process your own pumpkin meat for pies, cakes, or muffins. This is enough fun the kids will want to help you. Save the seeds.

11. Make your favorite pumpkin

recipes together and package them to give as gifts.

12.

6. Having guests? Carve out a very

kin. Use a drill to create a pattern of holes in the sides. Different sized bits will create smaller or larger holes. Insert a candle or battery operated light inside. Put the top back on and use to decorate your porch for the season.

8. To create a pumpkin topiary,

gather three pumpkins — small, medium, and large. Paint them different colors or decorate in some way. Stack them in a planter filled with dried greenery. Place the largest on the bottom, medium-sized one in the middle, and the smallest on the top. Insert more greenery between them and top with a bow.

13.

14.

Enjoy a game of pumpkin bowling. Cut the stem off a medium-sized pumpkin. Carve out three holes to resem-

ble a bowling ball. Set up rolls of paper towels or empty pop bottles as pins and have at it.

15.

Look up the formula for volume of an ellipsoid. Take the proper measurements of your pumpkin to estimate how much liquid your pumpkin will hold. Then fill it up and see if you got it right.

16.

Hide miniature pumpkins around your yard and have the kids hunt for them like an Easter egg hunt.

17.

Color your seeds different colors with permanent markers. Then use them to create a mosaic. If you know what you want to create before you start, it will help you to decide what colors to color the seeds. You can use this technique to make a picture for the refrigerator or to make holiday cards to send to friends and family.

LIVING IN HARMONY WITH ALLERGY AND ASTHMA

WHAT TO DO AFTER YOU HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH ALLERGIES OR ASTHMA? Chances are you have suffered an episode that led you to the ER and or to the allergist. The allergist is the specialist that tests, diagnoses and treats allergies and asthma and all the symptoms and conditions related. You are now diagnosed and on a treatment plan that includes most probably prescription medications, epinephrine auto-injector, a food allergy action plan or an asthma action plan. WHERE TO GO FROM HERE TO CONTINUE LIVING A HAPPY AND HEALTHY LIFE AND CREATING AN INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT?

Learn.

Educating the patient starts with the physician but it doesn’t end in the examining room. There are support groups where you can share each other experiences, official organizations that share useful information on their websites such as ACAAI (American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology) and the AAAAI (American Association of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology). It’s a teamwork that starts with your physician, clinicians and nurses that will help you understand the function of medications and the option for allergy shots if needed. They will provide you with action plans and any other form that schools and after care facilities will need.

Adapt.

Adapting your life to the new condition can be overwhelming at first, especially if the patient is a school-aged child. As a parent you’d want to have her/him under control at all times, yet all you’ll need to do is to educate your family, friends and all care-takers that spend time with your child. They will have to learn how to identify symptoms in order to administer epinephrine when needed, and not let the conditions escalate to emergency level. Having a pet allergy doesn’t mean that you will have to give the pet away, being diagnosed with exercise induced asthma doesn’t mean you will not be able to practice sports, being allergic to a food doesn’t mean that you will not be able to eat anymore or share happy moments like birthday parties or family gatherings. After understanding the steps and precautions to take as a family to prevent an allergic reaction, feeling overwhelmed will be a thing of the past.

Inspire, motivate, speak-up.

Now that you learned the in-and-out of your child condition, it’s time to educate others. You will encounter all sorts of reactions, and you’ll have to have much patience and determination. Many people have misled or incomplete ideas of what allergies are, not everyone is empathic or will be willing to cooperate, but the safety and well-being of the patient are paramount. Support and encouragement are always the best way to empower.

DON’T WAIT FOR THE STORM THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP IN A FAMILY EMERGENCY PLAN IS TO MAKE ONE BY REBECCA MCBANE There is never a bad time to get prepared for an emergency – except for when one is already upon you. Families need to have a plan in place well in advance of an impending emergency, like local flooding or a hurricane. But hurricanes aren’t the only danger. Family emergencies can include all large and small disasters, from flash floods to house fires. Having a good, well-rounded family emergency plan and some basic emergency supplies in place can put your mind at ease and go a long way to making the aftermath of an unexpected event more bearable. Alberto Moscoso is the communications director for Florida’s Division of Emergency Management. He encourages every Florida resident to visit FloridaDisaster. org and fill out a Family Disaster Plan today. “The time for preparation isn’t when the hurricane is approaching,” he said. “It’s important to develop a plan during the off season, especially for families, so that parents are prepared. There’s a lot of aspects to the plan and different types of info for getting prepared. Flood insurance for your home takes 30 days to take effect, and you can’t apply when there’s a named storm in existence. So, really, the time is now.” Being aware of what you need to do isn’t sufficient when an emergency arises. “Everyone is different, but I think it’s a great idea to have the plan written down and formalized. Getting together important paperwork, getting together prescriptions, having important numbers written down in case your phone dies,” Moscoso said. “The more time you put into it in the beginning, the better off you’ll be in the end.” For families, it’s important to take into account the ages of children and their changing needs and abilities. “Children should be trying to get in touch with their parents [during an emergency]. It’s important children know how to get in contact with their parents. If the children have a cell phone, great, but if they don’t, they need to know how to reach you.

“There’s special considerations for every age group, including special prescriptions and, of course, any dietary considerations,” he said. Parents also need to consider more than just the bare essentials when dealing with children. “There are times when there may be boredom, where you may be waiting around, so have books [and other distractions].” Again and again, Moscoso emphasized the importance of communication during an emergency. Hurricanes usually come with plenty of advance warning, but not all emergencies do. That’s why it’s so important that all family members know how to reach one another and know the details of the plan, including an alternative meeting place in case it isn’t safe to go home. “For hurricane preparedness, then maybe an open parking lot wouldn’t be the best place, but it should be a place familiar to your family,” Moscoso said. “If you are trying to evacuate your family, you need to know where you’re evacuating to. If you’re in a disaster zone, it might be better to just get out of there. Beyond that, if you’re staying with friends and family, make sure those plans are solidified in advance.” A good emergency plan isn’t just about writing it down. A well-stocked emergency supply kit is essential, and anyone who’s lived through even one hurricane season in South Florida knows what the No. 1 supply is. “The most important thing is water,” Moscoso said, “at least one gallon per person per day for three days. You want to make sure you have enough food for three to seven days. Also, nonperishable food items and remember to take into consider-

ation dietary requirements.” Other essentials include a manual can opener, cooking tools and fuel, and paper plates and plastic utensils. A battery-operated NOAA weather radio and first-aid kit should also be part of your supplies. When a storm is pending, gas tanks should be kept full because stations can run out in an emergency. Then, of course, there’s the family pet. “It’s important to have a plan for your pet. Some shelters don’t take pets, or if you’re sheltering with family or friends, make sure you can bring your pets with you and any dietary needs and medications your pets might need.” Moscoso said families should consider getting a landline phone if they don’t have one. It could be beneficial when a big emergency strikes because cell phone towers can get overloaded. “Basically, the more redundancies you have in place, they’ll be there when you need them.” As for those important numbers you should have written down in advance, they should include the contact information for out-of-town family members and the numbers of local emergency management departments. Your local department is the very best resource during an emergency, Moscoso said. But the single most important part of any family emergency plan, from basic to extensive, is that you make it, he said. Now. Today. “The time for preparation isn’t when the hurricane is approaching.” Visit FloridaDisaster.org to create your family (or business) emergency plan as well as for sample supply lists, important contacts and many other resources.

STEM for Preschoolers: ACTIVITIES TO TRY AT HOME BY SARAH LYONS Do your children have an interest in figuring out how things work? Do they enjoy experimenting with their surroundings? You may have a budding engineer, astronaut, mathematician or scientist on your hands. Even kids who are not naturally drawn to all things math and science enjoy exploring their environment and figuring out how they work. STEM are activities that engage kids of all ages in these specific areas: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, STEM occupations are growing 17 percent each year, and STEM degree holders have a higher income. While a career in the STEM field might seem a long time off for your preschooler, STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy and enables innovation of new products in the future. So it is never too early to start developing your child’s interest in math, science and technology. While many schools are developing STEM curriculums for classrooms, there are plenty of things you can do at home to kick-start your preschooler’s love of science. STEM IN THE KITCHEN Your school teachers were right, you do use math and science in everyday life. You may already love cooking with your kids, but consider incorporating science and math lessons at the same time. While baking cookies, have your children help measure the ingredients and count the scoops of flour. Talk about what happens if you do not use the correct measurements and discuss the purpose of baking powder and baking soda. (It leavens the batter to rise while baking.) Make the experience fun and educational at the same time. Your children might not even notice they are learning about math and science while baking and sampling tasty treats. DIY SCIENCE LAB Create your own science lab mixing station at home. All you need are several

34

plastic or glass containers (see-through are best) of any shape and size. Fill containers with dry ingredients, such as baking soda, baking powder, salt, sugar and cornstarch. Fill additional containers with wet ingredients, such as water, white vinegar, lemon juice and ice. Put towels underneath your mixing station or set the ingredients up outside so you can have fun without worrying about cleaning up. Once your science lab is set up, it’s time to get creative. Let your kids experiment with what happens when different ingredients are mixed. This activity is great for preschoolers, but can also be adapted for older children by providing them with a journal to record the results of each combination of ingredients when they are mixed. USE WHAT YOU HAVE Set up a sensory bin using dried beans, water beads or rice as a filler then hide items inside. Ask your child to find the red dinosaur, count the green items, or

close his eyes and guess what items he feels. Encourage your little engineer or architect to build a tower using toothpicks and marshmallows or fill a tray with shaving cream and blocks and ask if she thinks the shaving cream will help the blocks stick together. Sharpen his math skills with colored cereal like Fruit Loops. Ask your child to sort the pieces by color and count them. Then have them string the cereal on yarn to make a necklace. Make it fun and see what potential STEM activities you have laying around the house. Preschoolers love to explore with their hands and all of their senses, which makes the possibilities endless. Plant a garden, fill water glasses with food coloring and mix to learn about colors, count and sort items throughout the day, talk about and chart the weather, or play with magnets and a cookie sheet. STEM is all around us just waiting to be explored.

BAD NEWS, math-averse parents: It rubs off on your kids

BY HEIDI STEVENS With a new school year officially underway, experts in numeracy (like literacy, but with numbers) have an important message for mathaverse parents: Your anxiety is contagious. Our anxiety, I should say, is contagious. (I count myself among the math-averse.) Research shows that our seemingly benign statements about math (“I never liked this stuff,” “This never made any sense to me”) rub off on our children and do lasting harm. In a 2015 study, math-anxious parents who frequently helped their elementary schoolers with homework saw their kids learn significantly less math by the end of the school year than kids whose parents didn’t express an aversion to math. The kids of math-averse parents also reported more math anxiety than kids of parents who were not math-averse.

“The idea that you could make it worse by trying to help seems so diabolical,” said Jennifer McCray, principal investigator at the Erikson Institute’s Early Math Collaborative. But when trying to help includes mathbashing, making it worse is precisely what we do. “Statements from parents are extremely powerful in terms of helping a child decide, ‘Who am I going to be relative to math? How should I feel about math?’” McCray said. “Somewhere along the way, we decided some of us are math people and some of us are normal people, and that’s the way the world is.” McCray is on a mission to show us a better way. Her tips for a better, mathfriendlier year: Look for math in everyday moments: Count steps aloud as you’re climbing them together. Keep a running tab in your

heads at the grocery store. Talk about measurements — when you’re pumping gas, baking cookies, doing home repairs — to reinforce how often numeracy is woven into your days. Play math games together. “Games that involve math are a really powerful, positive way for parents and kids to have fun mathematics interactions,” McCray said. She suggested card games such as capture (also known as war) and dice games such as Yahtzee or Farkle. Don’t automatically check out at math time: “I don’t want to send the message to parents that they shouldn’t try to help with math homework,” McCray said. “Be willing to struggle and bring your best adult reasoning skills to the situation.” But keep your wits about you: Avoid saying, “I hate math,” “I’m lousy at math” or other math-bashing phrases aloud, even if you’re thinking them. “Your child thinks, ‘If my mom, who I admire, thinks it’s OK to say she’s not good at math, it must be OK for me to say that too,’” McCray said. “You need to try to move yourself to a frame of mind that math is something everyone can do.” Lean into the struggle: “Avoid sending kids the message that we throw up our hands in the face of things we have to wrestle with,” McCray said. “Telling kids, ‘Let’s get our hands around this together, let’s celebrate that we’re doing something together that presents us both with a challenge’ has a lot of value.” Don’t be afraid to ask for help: And if you hit an insurmountable roadblock, model another good life skill: Call for backup. “Show your child, ‘Here are some things we can do: We can talk to your teacher. We can call a friend,’” McCray said. If you’re truly in a bind, many public libraries offer homework help, as do private tutoring outfits. “Somehow, we’ve gotten to this place where it’s almost a fashionable thing to say you’re bad at math,” McCray said. “It creates the idea that math is for a special and unusual group of people. But math really does crop up every day in everybody’s life.” Maybe if we help our kids greet it with open arms, we can learn to stop cowering in its presence.

When can a child be left home alone? It depends. BY ALLISON KLEIN SPECIAL TO THE WASHINGTON POST Your kids are growing up so fast. They are getting smarter and more responsible, and they want more independence. It might be time to let them stay home on their own for a bit. Wait, what? Home alone? Without an adult? A lot can go wrong without grown-up supervision. But if it’s done correctly, experts say, this mile marker can give you and your kids some much-needed freedom and feelings of accomplishment. It can also go a long way in establishing trust in your relationship. “It’s a big step in independence and should be recognized as a milestone,” said Patti Cancellier, education director at the Parent Encouragement Program in Kensington, Md. “Our job as parents is to make our children completely independent

people.” A few states specify a minimum age it’s legal to leave kids on their own. For example, in Maryland, it’s 8 as long as there are not younger siblings at home. But most places, including Florida, offer guidelines, not laws. That’s because kids develop emotionally at different rates, making it a highly subjective matter. A mature 10-year-old might be ready for some freedom that an immature 14-year-old couldn’t handle. Parenting experts say that once kids start asking whether they can stay home on their own, they might be ready. “It depends on their personality and on what other responsibilities they have at home,” said Michelle Visser, a psychotherapist and parenting consultant in the Boston area. “Are they anxious? Do they still want to hold your hand if it’s really crowded somewhere? Are they waiting for you to leave the house so they can go to

the computer and go to that website you said they couldn’t go to?” A GRADUAL PROCESS Figuring out whether your child is ready to be home alone is a gradual process. Ruthie Arbit, a therapist and licensed clinical social worker who practices in Washington, D.C., has come up with a four-point checklist for parents who are considering leaving their kids on their own for the first time. 1. Safety: If your child needed to leave the house for an emergency, would they be safe? Is there a friend or neighbor nearby who can offer help in an emergency? 2. Responsibility: Can your child watch younger siblings, unpack groceries, do his own laundry? “Some kids might need hand-holding for basic tasks,” Arbit says. “Are they able to do day-to-day activities without constant reminders? Will they walk outside and get locked out of the house?” If kids aren’t responsible with you around, they probably won’t be responsible without you. 3. Cognitive readiness: Would they keep a level head if things didn’t go as planned? Arbit gives the example of a child slipping and falling. Would they stay on the floor and wait for you to come home, or would they assess their injuries and, if needed, grab a phone and call someone? “Are they able to, in moments of distress, access resources available to them?” Arbit asks. “When they get upset, do they get really flustered? When you tell your 10-year-old they can’t have something in a store, do they run off upset?” 4. Emotional readiness: Will they spend the entire 40 minutes you’re gone in bed crying, or will they watch some agreedupon television? “Parents need to know their child well enough to know whether they will handle the situation,” Arbit says. GUIDELINES If you think your kids might be ready, talk with them about it and ask whether they’d like to try it, Arbit says. If they’re game and you’re comfortable, start small by popping over to a neighbor’s house for 10 minutes, then progress to 30 minutes. “You start to know when kids are comfortable when you run next door for a minute,” said Tina Feigal, a parenting

stages » preteen coach and trainer based in St. Paul, Minn. “It’s a gradual, step-by-step readiness.” There are various child supervision guidelines, such as those from Fairfax County, Va., that suggest at age 8 to 10 parents might be able to explore leaving kids alone for no more than an hour and a half, and only during the day. If that goes well, starting around age 11 or 12, parents might consider leaving them for up to three hours, but not late at night. This is the range of time they may be able to handle being alone after school. Children ages 13 to 15 should be able to be home alone for a time. In any scenario, experts say, kids should be careful not to tell too many friends or post on social media that they are alone. GROUND RULES Before that process of building trust can start, parents need to set ground rules. Cancellier suggests agreements about whether homework needs to get done, whether it’s OK to have friends over and how much screen time is allowed. She also said to be sure parental controls are set on all devices. Some questions she suggests going over with your child include: What would you do if the doorbell rang? Do you plan to cook? What would you do if you smelled something funny? Do you know whom to call if you feel really scared? Cancellier also suggests that parents and kids agree about when and how to check in. Parents should be sure there is a phone in the house. The device needs to be charged, and the ringer needs to be on. Children should know where to find emergency numbers. She said it is critical to go over scenarios so kids feel confident they can handle situations that may arise. “You work together so your child will be completely equipped to handle this responsibility,” Cancellier said. “It’s an attitude, an opportunity for kids to grow and feel better about themselves and feel confident.” A PACT FOR BOTH SIDES Arbit emphasized that it is important to do what you say you’ll do, in the same way you expect your kids to do what they say. “You’re not just leaving, you’re leaving with a time you’ll be back,” Arbit said. “Try to be back at that time. You’re entering into this contract. The parent is expecting the child to be responsible, and the child is expecting the parent to be responsible.”
