Editorial We had great feedback from readers after we launched Southpoint Living magazine in fall 2019, and we had a number of people ask us for a similar magazine for an older demographic. As a result, we decided to publish a Boomer edition of Southpoint Living. The Boomer edition was set to debut in April 2020, with our cover photo and the majority of our content ready to go. But last March, as the reality of the pandemic set in, we made the difficult decision to hit pause on all of our magazines. Now, one year later, we are excited to finally introduce the Boomer edition of Southpoint Living. Our Boomer edition isn’t about slowing down; it’s about switching gears, doing more of the things you’ve been wanting to do, and having the confidence and courage to try new things. On behalf of everyone at Southpoint Publishing, I would like to thank all of the advertisers in this magazine. Now, more than ever, we know the importance of shopping local and we hope you will support these local businesses. Sincerely,

Beauty Buzz Words

BEAUTY

There are a number of ingredients that are dominating the skincare market these days. You’ve likely seen them on product labels but do you know what they are and what they do? Here are a few buzz-worthy beauty ingredients and what you should know about them. Retinol

Derived from Vitamin A, retinol is considered by many to be the ‘holy grail’ of anti-aging products. It helps to speed up cell turnover which can reduce the signs of aging and result in smoother, fresher skin. However, because retinol causes skin to shed cells faster, it can also result in redness and skin irritation if used in excess or on sensitive skin.

Bakuchiol

OUR FAMILY IS YOUR

Bakuchiol is a plant extract that offers similar benefits to retinol but without the risk of harsh side effects. It has antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, so it’s become a popular choice for people with sensitive skin.

FAMILY

Our friendly and helpful staff are trained to provide individualized programs and care for all of your needs. We want you to feel pampered, well taken care of and most importantly feel like you’re home when residing in one of our communities. For more information or to book a viewing visit

Rosehip oil Rosehip oil is extracted from the fruit and seeds of rose plants. It contains vitamin A, vitamin C and a high concentration of fatty acids that penetrate the skin and improve moisture and collagen levels. Glycerin Derived from plant sources, glycerin is ultra hydrating, attracting more water to the skin. It’s basically a moisturizer that attracts more moisture. It has been commonly used to treat skin injuries, so in skincare it can aid with irritation and redness.

Tips For Dealing With Age Related Hair Loss Nearly everyone will experience some sort of age-related hair loss. Strands of hair can become less dense and smaller through the years, and follicles may stop producing new hairs. Regardless of age, it is customary for a person to lose about 100 hairs a day but as you get older, those hairs are often not replaced as readily as they once were. Here are some common tips to keep in mind if you are dealing with hair loss: Try a new cut Work with your stylist to determine a haircut that can suggest the appearance of thickness and camouflage the loss of density or bare spots. Graduated layers kept close to the face can help, as can pixie cuts. Men may also choose to go entirely bald. Look for thickening formulas Many shampoos, serums and conditioners tout volumizing or thickening properties. These can help plump up hair and make thinning less apparent.

Treat hair gently Avoid harsh chemical processes and constant heat styling. Protect fragile hair from damage by pampering it. Talk to your doctor Hair loss may be a result of medication, a skin condition or aging. Doctors may suggest products that can be used on the scalp to reduce hair loss and help follicles produce new hair strands.

FASHION

Classic Looks You Can Wear At Any Age

by Victoria Baird

Aging isn’t what it used to be. Every day I am inspired with images of women who are embracing their next stage in life. Platforms such as Instagram have given women ‘of a certain age’ a place to showcase that life and style after age 50 can still be fun, full and vibrant. Building a functional wardrobe that works with your current lifestyle is the way to go and versatility is a must. It’s important to have pieces that can be reworked and paired in multiple ways to keep you from getting into a style rut. Use simple, classic, quality pieces as your foundation and then expand with a few pieces seasonally or incorporate a current trend that really captures you. Here are my picks for classic pieces you should have in your wardrobe that you can wear at any age.

A STRIPED SHIRT I read somewhere that stripes are a staple in every chic woman’s wardrobe and I couldn’t agree more. French women are renowned for being chic and stylish, often pictured wearing - yup you guessed it - a striped shirt!

2

Black A-Line Skirt Knee length or just below works best. It’s flattering for everyone and can be worn almost everywhere. Pair it with flats for a daytime look and heels for an evening cocktail party.

Chanel-INSPIRED JACKET

The name Chanel says it all – timeless and a statement piece. Don’t be afraid to dress it down a bit by pairing it with the next item on my list.

LITTLE BLACK DRESS

LIGHTLY DISTRESSED DENIM Yes, you can wear distressed denim at your age! One of the comments I hear all the time is from women over 50 wanting to look current; put together but not frumpy. Distressed jeans will help you achieve that balance of classy and current. At left, French Dressing Peggy straight jeans available at Pinstripes in Kingsville. At right, Silver Avery jeans available at Towne Emporium in Kingsville.

When choosing your next little black dress, look for a style or cut that accentuates the features you like best. Too often I see women trying to hide their ‘trouble spots’ with shapeless pieces. Stop it! Got great legs? Wear a dress that hits just above the knee. Want to accentuate your waistline, try a fit and flare cut. A V neck will draw the eye upwards and extend the length of your neck.

HOME

by Kat Tiessen

Have you recently moved into a smaller home or are you considering downsizing? Maximizing your space may feel daunting and challenging but here are some great tips on how you can live large in a smaller home. Kat Tiessen, Designer

Kat & Co. Interiors www.katcointeriors.com

There are three major considerations to take into account when designing your new space: function, storage and illusion.

FUNCTION How will each of your rooms and furnishings function for you? It may be that the dining room must now serve a dual purpose: serving meals and functioning as a home office. It’s important to not only choose furnishings that fit and look beautiful but that offer you options in terms of multitasking and functionality. For example, need to host Christmas dinner but are short on space? This console table is perfect because it does double duty. It is a beautiful antique-inspired console table and with the flip of the top, it turns into a dining table capable of seating six people.

Burnette Console Table, Gabby

STORAGE Storagespace is always a concern when downsizing. Rethink all of your pieces. Drawers and doors are your friends when looking to increase storage options. Open storage may look beautiful but it is not very functional when space is at a premium. Want to increase storage in your bedrooms? Look for beds with a storage system.

Entertainment consoles can be a great place to stash belongings.

Instead of using a side table with just a top and legs, use one with drawers. This could also be used as a bedside table.

ILLUSION Work your magic with the illusionof space. Part of making a room appear larger is to trick the eye. Keeping it ‘light, bright and airy’ always gives the illusion of more space. Consider light colours, fabrics and finishes when decorating your new smaller space. Glass coffee tables and side tables keep an airy open feeling within your room.

Find lighting that offers beauty and openness while still keeping traditional form.

Mirrors bounce light and energy around a room, expanding a space.

BLUE ZONES What we can learn from the

about living a longer, healthier life

What are the Blue Zones? Since the early 2000’s, American author Dan Buettner has been studying five locations that he calls the Blue Zones, the areas of the world where people are living the longest. His goal is to try to understand how and why the people who live in these areas are living longer. Where are the Blue Zones? • Ikaria, Greece • Okinawa, Japan • Sardinia, Italy • Loma Linda, California • Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica In his research, Dan Buettner has found these locations have nine things in common:

1 MOVEMENT

They walk often and move naturally versus moving specifically for exercise. They rely very little, or not at all, on things like technology and power tools, the things that have made our society more sedentary than those in the Blue Zones. Many of these locations are inland and at a higher elevation, so when they are simply walking in their community, they are walking at a more challenging incline or decline than walking on flat land.

2 SENSE OF PURPOSE 3 DOWNSHIFTING 4 80% RULE

They have a defined sense of purpose (i.e. they know their reason for getting up in the morning).

They incorporate activities in their daily routines to reduce stress (i.e. prayer, naps). They stop eating when they are 80% full and they eat their smallest meal later in the day, as opposed to having their smallest meal in the morning.

5 FOOD

They eat a mostly plant-based diet including many beans, greens, nuts and grains. They eat fish an average of twice per week and they eat very little meat, on average only five times per month.

6 WINE

They drink wine but only in moderation (1-2 glasses per day), and typically with food and/or friends. Sardinia produces red wine called cannonau, which is considered the healthiest red wine in the world because it has two to three times more amounts of flavonoids (an antioxidant) than other wines.

Sardinia Minestrone A bountiful dish that is eaten every day for lunch by some of the world’s longest-lived families in Sardinia, Italy. It can be made with seasonal vegetables from the garden, but always includes beans and fregula, a toasted pebble-size semolina pasta that is popular in Sardina. (Serves 8-10)

INGREDIENTS:

• 1⁄2 cup dried peeled fava beans • 1⁄2 cup dried cranberry beans • 1⁄3 cup dried chickpeas • 7 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 1 medium yellow or white onion, chopped • 2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped • 2 medium celery stalks, chopped • 2 teaspoons minced garlic • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes • 3 medium yellow potatoes, peeled and diced

• 1 1⁄2 cups chopped fennel • 1⁄4 cup loosely packed fresh Italian flat-leaf parsley leaves, chopped • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil leaves • 2⁄3 cup of Sardinian fregula, Israeli couscous, or acini di pepe pasta • 1⁄2 teaspoon salt • 1⁄2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 1⁄4 cup finely grated pecorino Romano

DIRECTIONS:

1. Soak the fava beans, cranberry beans, and chickpeas in a large bowl of water for at least 8 hours or up to 16 hours (that is, overnight). Drain in a colander set in the sink. Rinse well. 2. Warm 3 tablespoons of the olive oil in a large soup pot or Dutch oven set over medium-high heat. Add the onion, carrots, and celery; cook, stirring often, until soft but not browned, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 20 seconds. 3. Stir in the tomatoes, potatoes, fennel, parsley, and basil, as well as the drained beans and chickpeas. Add enough water (6 to 8 cups) so that everything is submerged by 1 inch. 4. Raise the heat to high and bring to a full boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer slowly, uncovered, until the beans are tender, adding more water as necessary if the mixture gets too thick, about 1 1⁄2 hours. 5. Stir in the pasta, salt, and pepper. Add up to 2 cups water if the soup seems too dry. Continue simmering, uncovered, until the pasta is tender, about 10 minutes. 6. Pour 1 tablespoon of olive oil into each serving bowl. Divide the soup among them and top each with 1 tablespoon of the grated cheese.

TIPS: You can vary the beans in the minestrone: pinto beans make a good substitute for cranberry beans; great northern or cannellini beans, for the favas. Use the stalks and fronds that come off a fennel bulb for the most intense flavor. No feathery fronds on the bulb? Add a teaspoon of fennel seeds to the aromatic vegetables you sauté to begin the dish. Add other fresh vegetables from the garden or market, such as zucchini, cabbage, green beans, and cauliflower or broccoli florets.Want a stronger tomato taste? Stir in a tablespoon or two of tomato paste.

7 FAITH 8 FAMILY 9 SOCIAL CIRCLE

Recipe courtesy of Blue Zones, LLC

They belong to a faith-based community (no specific denomination).

They put their families first, often having aging family members live with them or nearby. They are members of social circles that support healthy behaviour.

FOOD

Inflammation

Are the foods you’re eating causing long-term problems? Inflammation is the body’s response to infection, injury or disease. And while it can be helpful, inflammation can also stick around even when there is nothing threatening your body. Symptoms of long-term inflammation can include body pain, fatigue, insomnia, depression, anxiety, gastrointestinal problems, weight gain and frequent infections. Research has shown that food can play a role in both helping and hindering inflammation, and knowing which foods fall into which category can be beneficial if you’re battling inflammation.

14 | Southpoint Living - Boomer

Eat these

Foods that can fight inflammation: • Tomatoes • Turmeric • Berries • Dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa) • Avocados • Nuts • Olive oil • Fatty fish like • Beans salmon, cod and • Flax, chia and hemp seeds halibut • Green tea

Avoid these

Foods that can cause inflammation:

• Fried foods • Processed foods • Red meat • Alcohol • Refined carbohydrates

Reduce Sodium Intake By Using Fresh Herbs While many people use salt to add flavour to food, excessive amounts of sodium can cause high blood pressure which forces the heart to work harder and increases the risk for heart disease. If you frequently add salt to your food, one way to reduce your reliance on sodium while still adding some flavour is by using the following fresh herbs: Basil Basil has a sweet, fresh flavour profile and is best added to a dish right before serving. Freshly cut basil can be added to any number of dishes, including tomato sauces, pastas, salads, pizzas, and eggs. Cilantro Cilantro are the delicate leaves and stems of the coriander plant. Like basil, cilantro should be added to a dish right before serving and should not be cooked. Cilantro is often paired with beans, tomatoes, corn, and avocados, and is widely used when preparing Mexican foods at home. Oregano Greek dishes often combine oregano, mint and lemon to create a memorable, delicious flavour profile. If chopping fresh oregano, strip the leaves from the stem and then discard the stem. Parsley Parsley isn't just a garnish used to add aesthetic appeal to plates. Flat-leaf parsley provides a light and fresh flavour, while curly parsley offers a slightly peppery profile. Parsley is typically added to a dish during the final minutes of cooking or right before serving, and can be paired with chicken, fish, potatoes, and pasta among countless other foods.

FITNESS

THE 411 ON

PICKLEBALL

It’s been called the world’s fastest growing sport. If you don’t know what pickleball is, here is what you need to know: What is pickleball? A combination of tennis, ping-pong and badminton. It is played on a court the size of a badminton court with a paddle and a plastic, perforated ball that resembles a wiffle ball. It can be played indoors or outdoors and as doubles or singles. When did pickleball get started? Pickleball was invented in 1965 in Washington State and is believed to have started in Canada in the 1970’s after snowbirds played it in the US and continued playing when they returned home. How popular is pickleball? Pickleball has been called the fastest growing sport in the world and there is even speculation that it will one day become an Olympic sport. Why is pickleball so popular? It’s easy to learn and is less strenuous than many other sports, since it’s played on a smaller court and at a slower pace. It’s good for various ages and physical abilities. 16 | Southpoint Living - Boomer

What are the benefits of playing pickleball? • Physically, pickleball serves as a full body workout as particpants use their lower body to move around the court and their upper body to serve and return the ball. • Mentally, pickleball can improve brain activity since players are required to make quick decisions throughout the game. • Emotionally, pickleball can be beneficial for stress management and also provides a great social element. Who is playing pickleball? Once considered a sport for an older demographic, it is now becoming popular with all ages. It’s even being incorporated into physical education classes in some elementary and high schools. What do you need to play pickleball? One of the reasons pickleball is so popular is because it doesn’t take much to participate. You will need a pickleball paddle, the pickleball itself, tennis shoes and comfortable, athletic attire.

Where can you play pickleball locally? Eight new outdoor pickleball courts are currently under construction at the Kingsville Arena Complex and are expected to be completed in summer 2021. In the meantime, pickleball is being played outdoors at Ridgeview Park in Cottam. When permitted, pickleball can be played indoors on the second floor of the Kingsville Arena, at Migration Hall in Kingsville and at the Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Complex in Leamington. FEATURE

Leamington Mayor

Hilda MacDonald “I have never let age define me.”

18 | Southpoint Living - Boomer

At a time in your life when many people are taking a step back from professional responsibilities, why did you decide to run for mayor? I have never let age define me. I’m still about 46 in my head. I now have the confidence, the experience and the maturity to be a better mayor. I am not ready to have days without purpose and challenge. Being in the public eye, what do you do to make sure you have a healthy balance between your professional life and your personal life? My home and my family are my refuge. I make sure that I have a few evenings a week at home. The grandchildren keep me humble and happy. My husband and children do the same, just on a less grand scale. I walk every morning to get my exercise and for my mental health. What have been the biggest challenges of being the mayor in a pandemic? I keep saying that we at this level have the courage but lack the power. Those with the power, lack the courage. We have tried to push the needs and wants up the chain because we are so familiar with them, but often to no avail. Best example has been about agri-worker isolation and quarantine. We know the gaps, capabilities and the limits of the programs and yet the upper levels don’t even know the difference between isolation and quarantine, so how can they understand what we need? And the shutdown of small businesses is the second example. Those small businesses have had the best protocols and practices in place and yet we shut them down, leaving the big box stores open. No one listened despite the asks and the pleas from those on the forefront. It has been maddening and frustrating. How do you handle the negative comments that come your way on social media? I can’t let the comments allow me to take my eye off the end goal, so I no longer spend much time scrolling comments. Yes, sometimes they hurt, depending on where they come from. And then there are the usual critics who have no idea of what is actually going on in the background...they are the armchair quarterbacks. Their comments don’t carry any weight at all. What advice do you have for anyone who is interested in running for public office? You need to have a supportive family that understands the time that is demanded. If you are still in the work force, your employer has to be on board with the time requirements of this essentially part time position. You have to have thick skin. You have to have courage to make tough decisions. What is on your ten year plan both professionally and personally? Professionally, let me just say that former Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion is my hero. Personally, it’s about keeping balance in my life. All things in moderation. Lots of laughter and love. I have been truly blessed and I am ever thankful for all opportunities and experiences that have come my way. Southpoint Living - Boomer | 19

Retirement Living Long Term Care &

What is the difference?

Many people use terms like retirment home, long term care home and nursing home interchangeably, but there is a distinct difference. Whether it’s something you’re thinking about for an aging loved one or if you’re thinking about your own future, it’s important to understand the difference between them. Overall, the biggest difference is the level of support the resident requires.

RETIREMENT LIVING • Caters to more independent adults who are still looking to live a fairly active lifestyle • There is flexibility in the level of support available as residents can live as independently as they want • Residents are responsible for the full costs, with monthly rent based on the size of the suite and which amenities the resident would like to add • Additional amenities include things like housekeeping and à la carte dining • Personal support services are available if a resident requires assistance with things like medication administration • Often has amenities like fitness centre, hair salon and library • Provides organized activities for residents including card games, movie nights and live entertainment BOTTOM LINE: You call the shots and you do what you want when you want. 20 | Southpoint Living - Boomer

LONG TERM CARE • Often referred to as a nursing home • Necessary for individuals who require a high level of care and 24/7 supervision • Eligibility is determined by healthcare professionals or agencies and the waitlist for availability can often be extensive • Resident is responsible for a portion of their rent while the government covers the other portion • Activities will be provided however they will be geared towards the residents abilities BOTTOM LINE: Focus is on healthcare services and support

What’s normal and what’s not? No matter what age you are, there is a good chance you have forgetful moments. Where did you leave your keys? What is that person’s name? But what is normal, mild forgetfulness and when should you be concerned that your forgetfulness could be a serious memory problem? According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, here are some ways to distinguish between normal aging and dementia.

NORMAL AGING

• Not being able to remember details of a conversation or event that took place a year ago • Not being able to remember the name of an acquaintance • Forgetting things or events occasionally • Occasionally have difficulty finding words • You are worried about your memory but your relatives are not

DEMENTIA

• Not being able to recall details of recent events or conversations • Not recognizing or knowing the names of family members • Forgetting things or events more frequently • Frequent pauses and substitutions when finding words • Your relatives are worried about your memory, but you are not aware of any problems

One of the biggest benefits of getting an early diagnosis is getting an accurate diagnosis to determine what you’re dealing with. Other conditions like thyroid disease, depression and medication interaction can also cause memory loss, so the sooner you know exactly what you’re dealing with, the better. 22 | Southpoint Living - Boomer

What to do if you think your loved one has a serious memory problem It can be heart-wrenching to see a loved one with a declining memory and it can be difficult to figure out what you should do. As hard as it may be, it’s important that you address their behaviour as soon as possible. Here are some tips on dealing with your loved one’s memory loss: • Discuss your loved one’s behaviour with other friends and family members. Confirm if others have also noticed the same behaviour. • Use a gentle approach to ask your loved one if they’ve noticed any change in their memory. There may be two possible reactions to this as they may be relieved to talk about it or they may become defensive if they are in denial.

Let me make your move stress free.

• Encourage your loved one to go to the doctor to get an assessment to determine the cause of their memory issues.

TRAVEL

Recreational vehicle (RV) sales soared last summer due to restrictions on air and cross-border travel. Many people enjoy being able to visit a number of different places on a single trip while also having many of the comforts of home on hand. It’s also an opportunity for people working remotely to be able to travel without having to take any vacation time. While you may be tempted to join the masses, buying an RV is a major investment that requires a lot of thought. There are different types of RVs and many options available, so it’s important to determine the one that best suits your needs.

Here are 5 things to keep in mind if you’re thinking about buying an RV:

TYPE

FEATURES

Do you want an RV you can drive or one you can tow? Do you want one that is new or pre-owned?

Do you want all the amenities of home including luxury appliances and furnishings? Or are you just looking for the basics?

SIZE

FINANCES

Will you feel comfortable driving an RV that’s similar to a bus? Do you want something that will be easy to take anywhere? (i.e. small campsites)

How much can you afford? Don’t forget about the additional expenses associated with owning an RV like gas, maintenance and the cost for storing your RV in the winter.

SPACE

How much space do you need? Do you want multiple sleeping areas or only one bed? Do you need lots of room for storage or do you travel light?

24 | Southpoint Living - Boomer

If you aren’t sure what type of RV would be best, get feedback from people with RV experience and consider renting first. That way when decide to buy, you’ll be confident you made the right decision.

TRAVEL ALTERNATIVES While travel restrictions and COVID concerns may be preventing trips abroad, there are still a few alternative ways to visit far away places. Virtual walks on YouTube Turn on your treadmill or simply relax on your couch and watch a virtual walk. There are many destinations to choose from including big cities, small towns, beaches, national parks and historic sites. There typically isn’t anyone talking so the only audio you will hear is the sounds of that location. Live webcams Live webcams are set up in almost any location imaginable including tourist destinations, city skylines, small towns, beaches, ski resorts, volcanos and animal sanctuaries. Books and movies Reading books and watching movies can be an easy way to temporarily transport you to desirable locations. And some, like Under The Tuscan Sun, have both book and movie options available, so you can choose which one you would prefer. Travel experts Watch videos or read books by travel experts like Rick Steves and Samantha Brown who go in-depth on things like history, food and culture.

Sufficient sleep is a vital component of a healthy life, however many people find that as they get older, their quality of sleep has declined. The most common sleep issues are insomnia, health issues like sleep apnea, frequent urination, or taking medication that impedes sleep. Over time, insufficient sleep can impact metabolism, mood, memory, and heart function. If you’re looking to get a better night’s sleep, here are a few tips: Create a luxury bed environment Splurge on the largest mattress you can afford and one that is comfortable for both parties (if married/ coupled). A roomy bed routinely invites sleep. If you have a restless partner, try two separate beds pushed against each other. Consider white noise The sounds of the house or outdoors may be keeping you up. Many people find that the gentle hum of a fan or a white-noise machine with a calming sound effect makes it easier for them to dose off. It can also block out extraneous noises. Keep electronics out of the bedroom It can be challenging to disconnect from electronics, but it is essential to falling asleep. Even a back-lit text coming through in the wee hours can be enough illumination to disrupt sleep. 17 Division St. S., Kingsville • www.pinnacleplusrealty.com

Establish a sleep routine Go to bed at the same time each night and try to follow the same routine as you prepare for bed. Experts suggest that parents esablish a sleep routine for their baby and that same strategy can result in improved sleep for adults too. See your doctor If medications or illnesses are keeping you up, a change in regimen may provide the relief you need.

The Benefits of

OWNING A DOG If you’re already a dog lover, it won’t take much convincing to tell you that having a four-legged friend can be a positive experience. And while owning a dog doesn’t come without it’s challenges, including financial and time commitments, it turns out there are a number of benefits to owning a dog later in life.

Increased Physical Activity

Owning a dog can get you outdoors more, including physical activity like walking, running and throwing a ball or frisbee.

Improved Health

Giving you more time to spend in the spaces you love

Along with increased physical activity comes improved health like lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels and improved cardiovascular health.

Companionship

Having an emotional attachment to your dog can lessen the risk for depression, especially if you’re dealing with an empty nest or living alone.

Social Interaction

Taking your dog for a walk or to a dog park can result in social interaction that you wouldn’t have had otherwise.

HISTORICALLY DRINKING Essex County has become a hotspot for the production of great drinks, first with the wine industry and now with the addition of a number of craft breweries in recent years.

Many of these drink producers are taking a page from local history when it comes to naming their drinks and even developing their brands as a whole. Pelee Island Winery Thaddeus Smith VQA South Winds is named after one of the founders of Vin Villa, Canada’s first commercial winery that was founded in 1866 on Pelee Island. J.S. Hamilton Red VQA is named after the liquor wholesaler from Brantford who purchased Vin Villa wines from Thaddeus Smith. Mr. Hamilton liked the Pelee wine so much, he moved to Pelee Island and started the Pelee Island Wine & Vineyards Co. Viewpointe Estate Winery Viewpointe’s Surfside line of wines is a nod to Surfside 3, the music venue at Lakeside Park that was popular in the 1960’s and 1970’s featuring performances by Bob Seger, Mitch Ryder, and many Motown groups. Banded Goose Brewery The name Banded Goose pays homage to birding legend and conservationist Jack Miner. At the brewery, you will find Jack’s Golden Ale on tap while large black and white photos hang on the walls from the archives of the Jack Miner Sanctuary. The Grove Brew House The Grove Brew House has a number of their beers named after local history, including their Westcott Cream Ale that is named after musician and composer Caroline Westcott who published songs in the late 1800’s including “Essex Queens” and “Mettawa’s Walzes”. Cured Craft Brewery Cured Craft Brewery is located in one of Leamington’s most historic buildings. It was once the office and garage of American Colonel William T. Gregory who came to Leamington in the early 1900’s and introduced the process of flue-curing to local tobacco farmers. Colonel G’s Cream Ale (left) is a nod to the building’s former owner and a portrait of Mr. Gregory hangs inside the brewery (far left). 32 | Southpoint Living - Boomer
