Province ramping up boosters as case numbers escalate

REGIONAL — Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent public health units are moving ahead with plans to ramp-up vaccination opportunities for those 18+ as the Ontario government announced last week that anyone 18 and over would be eligible for booster shots on Monday, December 20. As those 50+ were eligible last week, appointments were booked quickly, leaving many without an appointment going into Christmas week. Those 18+ can book through wevax.ca in Windsor-Essex or through getyourshotck.ca provided they are at least three months removed from their second COVID vaccine. Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has plans to re-open the mass vaccination centre at the Nature Fresh Farms Recreation Complex in early January. Leamington Mayor Hilda MacDonald says that re-opening should not impact the hockey rink side, but will sidetrack any activities in the gymnasium. Both local health unit regions have been under modified restrictions for the last couple of weeks and the rest of Ontario followed suit over the weekend. Among those were restaurants and bars being restricted to 50 per cent capacity. BOOSTERS — Page 2

More than 1,000 names were submitted by CK residents, and that number was pared down to 25 for voting purposes. The signs, sponsored by WINMAR, will be placed on the vehicles throughout Chatham-Kent in January. Mayor Darrin Canniff said public response to the contest was so great that the number of winners was doubled. “We had originally planned to have one plow per ward but when we saw the interest and the level of creativity in submitting names, we decided to double the number of winners,” he said.

Due to recent allegations of tampering and forgery of vaccine passports, the government also mandated that you must have a vaccination QR code to dine inside a restaurant or attend sporting events. For those without cell phones, you can have your QR code printed out. New to this area, grocery stores and big box retail are now only allowed a 50 percent capacity indoors, effective Sunday morning, December 19. Lineups were visible outside Walmart in Leam-

ington on Sunday. The new restrictions brought in by the province come under a surge of new COVID cases across Ontario that brought daily cases from the 700-800 range into the 4,000 range by this past weekend. The modeling shows new cases may reach 10,000 per day by early in the new year, if no steps are taken. For more information on the restrictions put in place or to find your QR code, visit Ontario.ca.

Work continues in downtown Wheatley

WHEATLEY — Demolition and excavation work continued through last week in Wheatley and word was that on the weekend, several more evacuated residents were able to access their homes and take some items with them. Photos revealed the demolition work had

razed MJ’s Pizza and the remainder of the Pogue building. Excavation was underway later in the week as crews removed the debris and began the tedious process of examining what’s underground. The investigation is still ongoing.

Excavators continued to remove debris late into the week, while workers measure gas levels in the blast zone. Photos supplied by Chatham-Kent

70 YEARS WITH CWL

LEAMINGTON — — Frances Zdiarski was recently presented with her 70-year pin as a member of St. Michael’s Church Catholic Women’s League. She joined the league in its very early years and organized the first funeral luncheons. Frances often went into the homes to assist parishioners who were sick, bringing them Communion and often driving them to doctor’s appointments. Even with the demands of raising children and doing busy greenhouse farmwork, she made it a priority to take time to serve her church community. In later years, she brought Communion to patients in the hospital, the long-term care residences and shut-ins at home. She could always be counted on to make sauce for church spaghetti dinners and to help with bake sales and other events. Frances is a true example of dedication to serving others. Photo submitted

mitment of $500,000. CMHC’s funding for this work is in support of Habitat Windsor-Essex’s efforts to improve the way affordable housing is built in Canada.

Habitat Windsor-Essex is also partnering with the University of Windsor on this project to learn more about how this technology could potentially shorten construction times and, over time, reduce costs. With the largest structural engineering lab in the country, University of Windsor will be conducting load testing, thermal testing, researching new materials and more. Four units are being built using 3D printing as part of an accessible, net zero ready, four-plex design. Once this project is completed, individuals in need of attainable housing will have access to safe and decent housing through a partnership with The Bridge Youth Resource Centre on Sherk Street. There is a growing need for affordable housing but access to decent and affordable housing remains out of reach for too many people. An emerging technolo-

gy, 3D printing could be a game-changing solution to the current housing crisis. Krista Rempel, Executive Director of The Bridge stated, “We are very excited about this opportunity to partner with Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex for a chance to take an innovative approach to addressing the local housing crisis. Within our strategic plan, we have always had the goal to build rental units and this partnership is a unique way to move the initiative forward. We are looking forward to the collaboration and what can be developed as a result, including the research around the project.” “This project would not be possible without the support and financial commitment of CMHC,” said Fiona Coughlin, Executive Director and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex. “As a builder of decent and affordable housing, we’re

looking forward to being able to learn more about how to use this emerging technology and create a foundation for future builds for ourselves, as well as others.” “Thank you to Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Building Bridges Erie Shores for joining efforts on this innovative solution to the current housing crisis,” said Leamington Mayor Hilda MacDonald. “We are very grateful the Municipality of Leamington was selected as the first location of this fully accessible 3-D multi-unit residential build.” The units are being constructed under a greenhouse set-up to help alleviate any weather concerns for the concrete temperature requirements. According to Krista Rempel, once the units are ready, the greenhouse set-up will be removed.

My memorable Christmas characters When you think of all the stories, movies, songs and TV shows surrounding Christmas, you don’t have to go far at this time of year to see, hear or experience them. A plethora of Christmas songs play ad-nauseum on the radio and I usually embrace that. This year, with all that’s happening in the world, I can’t help but just shrug my shoulders. It got me thinking about all of the Christmas movies, TV shows and stories, and all of the classic characters we recognize by sight, voice and of course, famous Christmas quotes. Outside of the obvious (the jolly old elf himself), there are many Christmas-related characters who may — or may not — stick in your mind. In no particular order, here is my hall of fame (with apologies to A Christmas Carol and It’s aWonderful Life). Harry Lyme — Well, what can I say about Harry, whose name is probably not immediately recognizable, but if I said Joe Pesci’s character in Home Alone, you’d know exactly who I was talking about. Harry and his partner

Marv (played by Daniel Stern) formed the Wet Bandits, a burglary duo that fall victim to the booby traps set up by Kevin McCallister in the classic 1990 movie. The sheer pleasure we got out of Harry’s misfortune made the movie what it was. Cindy Lou Who — Who (get it?) couldn’t relate to young Cindy Lou in that original How The Grinch Stole Christmas animated tv-movie from 1966? Her interactions with the Grinch (voiced by Boris Karloff three years before he died) made us kids feel warm and fuzzy inside, kind of like our hearts grew three sizes that day. Susan Walker — My childhood crush on Natalie Wood began very early, with black and white re-runs of A Miracle on 34th Street playing on our Sylvania set every year at Christmas. The movie was made 14 years before I was born, so I was already out of Ms. Wood’s league before I even realized it. Back then, we all wanted to believe and Susan’s dialogue with Edmund Gwenn’s Kris Kringle went a long way toward helping us believe. Clarice — The young doe that got

considerably over the years. When I first came to Leamington’s CHYR radio in 1977, we didn’t start playing the Christmas tunes until the beginning of December or sometimes in the last week of November. It started with a rotation of one song per hour the first week and then two songs per hour in week two, followed by four songs an hour spread out equally in week three, and ending with six songs per hour in the final days leading up to Christmas.

While that avoided us having too much repetition until the later weeks, we did manage to continue adding some excellent contemporary selections over the years including songs like Chris de Burgh’s “A Spaceman Came Travelling”, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s “Colorado Christmas” and anything by The Trans-Siberian Orchestra. In the years to follow, some superbly notable Canadian selections also came along, including Patrick Norman’s Jim Heyens PUBLISHER

Another take on Christmas songs With popular Christmas songs flooding the airwaves on many radio stations, it’s an awkward time surely for recording artists with non-seasonal tunes to get as much airplay. And then there are stations like Detroit’s 100.3 WNIC and Cleveland’s Majic 105.7 and others elsewhere that have been playing only Christmas songs 24 hours a day since early November. Where does it all stop? On Boxing Day, of course. But things have changed

folky and gently handled acoustic version of “Happy Christmas (War Is Over)” and, of course, Rita MacNeil’s beautiful vocal take on “O Holy Night” which is treated with such grace and simplicity. If that song doesn’t make your insides tingle, you probably need some more Christmas Spirit. Now, on another note, going back three years before that, in 1974, after I had graduated from high school and travelled overseas in late November to spend four months in England and Scotland on my exciting first trip away from home, I met some great new friends and my dad’s special long-distance relatives in

FLASHBACK RADIO with Chuck Reynolds the East Riding of Yorkshire area, in Market Weighton, which is about 20 miles from the cities of Hull and York. It was there that I read about this four-man pop group called ‘Mud’ who really got my attention when I first heard their number one record on BBC Radio One a few days before Christmas. That hit song which topped the charts for four weeks was called “Lonely This Christmas” and the lead singer, Les Gray, sounded amazingly like Elvis Presley. It was a great im-

itation, and being a longtime fan of the ‘King’, I was truly impressed. To top it off, one of my cousins, Chris Billam, gave me a copy of that single record sometime after Christmas and I still have it to this very day. I just played it the other night with fond memories of that very special and happy Christmas I had so far away in England with the wonderful Billam family. With those warm special feelings still inside, I wish you a very Merry Christmas.

St. Clair pauses an extra week for holidays REGIONAL — In a recent letter to its students, St. Clair College announced that it has paused in-person gathering on campuses until vaccination boosters and other mitigation methods can bring the Omicron surge under control. “St. Clair College is thankful for your efforts in following the safety protocols that were in place throughout the fall semester,” said the letter. “These efforts have allowed us to successfully complete the semester on

campus. We continue to ensure compliance with all public health regulations and protocols. The same amount of preparation and strategy has gone into planning your winter semester.” The pause will be two weeks in duration. For all returning post-secondary students, that means that classes will be delayed one week and commence on January 17, 2022. However, in-person classes and labs will be delayed until January 24, 2022.

To be clear, all post-secondary classes and labs between January 17 to January 23, 2022, will be held online synchronously following the course schedules that have been posted on the students’ SIS. During this period, all online classes will be recorded and posted to Blackboard. For those in placement, the college announced that all placements will continue as scheduled unless otherwise communicated. In addition,

of memories

Come To Me God saw you getting tired, and a cure was not to be, So He put His arms around you, and whispered, “Come to me.” With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away, Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove, He only takes the best. With all our love always, June, Nelson, Cathie (Gary), Jessica, Caiti-Beth and Evan

Kingsville businesses support $25,000+ fundraiser for area schools KINGSVILLE – Students at elementary schools in Kingsville, Cottam and Amherstburg will be enjoying new technology, musical instruments, and other extracurricular items thanks to an annual fundraiser put on by the group Eat, Drink, Dine Kingsville (EDDK). This year students at Kingsville Public School, Jack Miner Public School, St. John De Brebeuf, Gosfield North Public School and Anderdon Public School sold EDDK gift cards, with a portion of every sale going directly to their school. In total, they raised $25,965. “The support these school families have shown our small businesses is truly astounding,” said EDDK member Heather Brown, co-owner of the Main

Grill and Ale House. “We’re grateful for the community’s support over the past two years. Giving back through this fundraiser is the least we could do.” 2021 was the fifth year for the school gift card fundraiser. So far, EDDK has raised nearly $100,000 for local community schools. Eat, Drink, Dine Kingsville is a group of 16 like-minded Kingsville-based food establishments that work together to promote Kingsville as a regional culinary destination. Members include restaurants, wineries, breweries, butcher shops, and specialty grocery stores. Learn more at https://eatdrinkdinekingsville.

SANTA VISITS WHEATLEY

WHEATLEY — For the second year in a row, Santa and Mrs. Claus toured the streets of Wheatley on Saturday, December 18. Many children waited anxiously to see Santa drive past their house and they weren’t disappointed as the jolly old fellow made his rounds throughout the town. Photo courtesy of Lauren Anderson

W.A.P.S. HOSTS TAXIDERMIST WHEATLEY — Students at Wheatley Area Public School were treated to the sights of taxidermist Greg Balch’s creations on Thursday, December 9. Balch, a taxidermist and wildlife educator from London, was brought in by the Southwest Outdoors Club and made presentations to four different cohorts at the school. Here, some of the students examine the big game mounts in the gymnasium. Photo submitted

LEAMINGTON — Meteor Systems on Seacliff Drive in Leamington recently made a food donation to Salvation Army Leamington. The food collected will help needy families during and beyond the holidays. KPS FOOD DRIVE KINGSVILLE – Kingsville Public School held a successful December food drive. Students and staff brought in over 4,000 items that will go to the Goodfellows and Kingsville Food Bank to stock their shelves and feed those in need in the community. The winning team was the Red House, which collected over 1,500 cans. Kudos to Ms. Keri Kaufmann, Grade 7/8 French Immersion teacher, and her students who organized the drive and sorted the non-perishable food received. M.D. BENNIE CAN DRIVE

LEAMINGTON — The M.D. Bennie Public School Holiday Can Drive was a huge success this year. Students were given the challenge of being the class with the most cans collected for the local Salvation Army. The Bulldogs rose to the occasion, raising a grand total of 2,132 cans. Special shoutout to Mrs. Saba’s class for bringing in the most cans (398). Showing caring for their community has been a school focus this month, and the Bulldogs showed their big hearts. Mrs. Mulholland’s RISE AM class collected and organized the cans, getting everything put together and ready for pickup. Submitted photo

Light the Night! C-K will be hosting virtual escape room

CHATHAM-KENT – Winter is here. The nights are long, and outside it’s cold and dark, but there is something wonderful that can brighten this time of year – the aurora borealis or northern lights! Chatham-Kent Public Library is offering a virtual escape room with a twist. Participants solve a series of virtual puzzles at home and then bring a password to a CKPL branch where they unlock a box to unleash the northern lights. Light the Night! will be available December 28 to January 14 at Tilbury, Chatham and Ridgetown branches and January 24 to February 11 at Blenheim, Dresden and Wallaceburg branches. Participants can access the puzzles through the library’s website www. ckpl.ca, Facebook page @CKPLibrary or by registering at their local branch. Light the Night! is a family activity geared to children age 7 and up. Contact your local library branch for more information.

Looking back ...

From the Leamington Post December 18, 1985 One of Leamington’s fairly regular players of provincial lottery games became a millionaire on Thursday night. A ticket purchased many weeks ago by Brian Tofflemire qualified his entry into the final draw. And the number – 36 – held by Tofflemire and his wife Kathi, was the 13th drawn and worth a million dollars in the Grand Prix scratch and win game. The ticket cost him $1 and was purchased at Blonde’s Confectionery on Erie Street North from Carolyn Wenzler. There were 39 finalists and Tofflemire’s number was drawn for the big prize. The least they could have won was $10,000. —— The Leamington Public Utilities Commission has halved the cost of its new computer. On Thursday, the commission learned that the provincial ministry had approved a $13,100 grant for the PUC to help offset the cost of the computer. The commission has sold its previous computer — about five years old — for $15,000. The grant and sale reduced the cost of the new computer to $27,000. —— Value of new construction in Leamington surged toward the $9 million mark on the strength of building permits issued in November. This brought the total for 1985 to $8,988,450, which is about $6 million more than last year. —— Despite strong southwesterly winds, blowing snow and splashing waves, it was business as usual at The Dock Restaurant on Saturday night. This year, only four American teams have entered, with two from Michigan and the Chicago Patriots and Chicago Falcons. Remembering Leamington Sanitary Dairy By Stephen Wuerch Special to the Sun In the fall of 1945, the Kennedy family (Kennedy’s Dairy Leamington) sold to another local family, the Bradburys, and Leamington Sanitary Dairy was born. The dairy was located on Mill Street West, next door to Dr. Shotton’s Medical Office. The Bradburys worked very hard, with Mrs. Bradbury managing the storefront sales and walkin customers, and Mr. Bradbury managing the day-to-day operations, processing and the delivery of milk. The day began early, at 5:00 a.m., as fresh milk from local farms arrived. Sanitary Dairy also had one employee that travelled to the farms — Smitty —to collect milk. The raw milk was then processed and bottled, ready for the day’s deliveries. In the summer months, ice was brought into the plant where it was chipped and distributed on top of all the milk crates to keep cool. In later years an ice maker was installed which eliminated the need for ice to be brought in. During the late 1950s

and early 1960s, the dairy continued to grow, and several significant changes took place as the dairy modernized. Some of these changes included the hiring of three additional full-time employees and the Bradbury boys also getting involved in the dairy, working on the weekends to keep up with production. New delivery trucks were also ordered, while the horse and wagon were retired. The last notable change happened when the dairy/cream cans carrying the raw milk became obsolete, as raw milk from the farms was now being delivered by tanker. Through these business changes, demand for Sanitary’s dairy products continued to grow and routes were expanded to include Blytheswood, Staples, Comber, Stoney Point, Deerbrook, St. Joachim, Ruscom and along Point Pelee Drive. However, the new route along Highway 3 east to the outskirts of Wheatley garnered the majority of the attention as this did not sit well with the town of Wheatley or Wheatley Dairy.

In 1966, Leamington Sanitary Dairy was approached by Silverwood Dairies with an expression of interest to purchase. As the town of Leamington had a by-law stating that any grocery stores or business selling milk had to be supplied by a local dairy, to buy out a local dairy (license) was the only way for Silverwood (Windsor) to enter into the Leamington market. Consequently, because of a lucrative offer from Silverwood, combined with the new and ever-changing health regulations and maintenance expenses, the dairy was sold. At this time, Silverwood removed all the processing equipment as the milk product was now being brought in from the Windsor plant. A noteworthy result of this buyout was it also had forced the two re-

maining dairies in town (Hunter and Lakeside) into merger discussions of their own in order to compete with Silverwood. As a result of these discussions, Lakeside Jersey Dairy ending up buying Hunter Dairy. In 1961, another part-time employee by the name of Bert Jansen was hired. Bert was a very quick study, according to the Bradburys, and fit in very well with the existing four milk delivery drivers and the plant employees. “I started working around 1961 as a Saturday milkman helper and as the years went by, I became more and more involved in both the dairy deliveries and plant operations,” says Bert. “My in-plant duties included helping load milk trucks at 5:30 a.m., operating the bottle washer and clean-up of equipment after bottling was done. Eventually, as the bottles were being phased out, I also oper-

Wednesday, December 22, 2021

ated the milk carton machine.” In regards to the delivery of milk, Bert was up at 5:00 a.m. and would help load the product for the day in an alley located directly behind the dairy. All trucks were Divco trucks except for one GMC model, which Bert would eventually drive. “The trucks were not refrigerated so you would need to pack some ice with you in the summer months,” he said. “You would stand in order to drive the delivery trucks and when you approached a stop, the truck was taken out of gear and brakes applied. At times, you would just jump out while the truck was rolling and if you were quick and good enough, jump back in just before it stopped.” Bert eventually received a promotion and had his own Monday and Friday country route which eventually expanded into a full week. “Every day was different as a milkman, as I would sometimes deal directly with customers or just drop off the bottles in a milk cubby hole built into house,” he said. “It

was also in this milk cubby hole where the customer would leave the empty bottles, money and next order.” As some families had many kids and other family members living with them, Bert would sometimes even leave a wooden crate behind from the dairy filled with up to a dozen quarts. “That was a pile of milk!” he said. NOTE: There is very little information on Leamington Sanitary Dairy and Kennedy’s Dairy. If you or a family member/friend were associated with these dairies and have any photographs, stories and other documentation or paraphernalia, we would enjoy hearing from you as this information (copies) will be for permanent historical record and for a book. Please email to sewuerch@hotmail.com A special thanks to the Bradbury family and to delivery man Bert Jansen for all the information they have provided. Sharks paying tribute to Bill Hyatt tonight

By Greg Coulter WHEATLEY – As a tribute to Bill Hyatt’s life as a kind, humble, soft-spoken family man and dedicated fan of family and youth activities, the Wheatley Sharks will be honouring him at a ceremony prior to tonight’s December 22 home game. For a young boy growing up in Coatsworth in the early 1950s with eight older brothers and sisters, an opportunity for organized sports was at best a limited option. Entertainment consisted primarily of winter pond hockey and summer scrub baseball. During those years, young Bill Hyatt would hone his ball skills that would allow him to become one of the premier local baseball athletes. With the aid of his older sisters supplying rides to practices and games, he would play competitively around 15 years old. At 6 feet tall and sporting a muscular physique, he quickly rose to MVP status throughout his career as a shortstop and pitcher. Even at a young age, Bill remained humble and was always quick to point out the achievements of his teammates. Those traits and his obvious good looks caught the eye of a young Tilbury lass — Jo-Ann McKinlay — and in 1966 they were married. Jo-Ann was proud of his humility and good character. “His word was good,” she said. Settling in Wheatley,

Bill would move on from hardball to fastball. Vintage pictures show him with Port Alma, Wheatley Elevators and Tann’s Alignment. As a member of the championship Wheatley team of the Sun Parlour Fastball League, Bill would take home the triple crown of most valuable player of his team, the league and the playoffs. In his youth, Bill was unable to participate in organized hockey but later his natural athletic ability allowed him to be a very good beer league participant. Son Brad noted he could shoot just as hard either right or left-handed. While balancing his ball career, he dedicated 37 years of his life to the H.J. Heinz Company. Jo-Ann and Bill were blessed with daughter Cindy and son Brad in early 1967 and mid 1968. Family pictures brought out the true character of a caring husband, dad and grandfather. His role in life changed from star athlete to ‘super fan’ of his growing family circle. He became a permanent fixture at ball diamonds, hockey and figure skating events, and family golf rounds. He believed in the old saying, “Take your kid to the game, don’t send them.” Bill could often be spotted at a sporting event before his grandchildren had arrived to participate. He always had a particular spot in the

stands at each venue and the kids always knew he was there. Rarely, if ever, would he chastise kids for a bad outing — simply saying, “Be the best you can be, having butterflies means you’re ready.” Bill became a permanent fixture at Wheatley Sharks home games as long as his health allowed, as Brad helped guide the team as an assistant coach. He was always in the same spot, sitting in the stands. In addition to the pregame ceremony, the Sharks welcome the students of Wheatley Public School.

Sharks come up short in two games By Greg Coulter WHEATLEY — Despite icing two of their best efforts of the season, the Wheatley Omstead Sharks came up short in two games last week. Wednesday against Amherstburg, the locals controlled much of the play and held a wide margin on the shot clock only to be repeatedly stymied by the opposition netminder. Tied after the first and second periods, the Sharks gave up two early third-period markers en route to a heartbreaking 5-4 loss. The Admirals made the most of their limited scoring opportunities and despite the loss, Jackson Ford was very solid in the Wheatley net. Shannon Olson (third star) led the way with two goals, while Dallas Anderson and Braedon Caetano added singles. Friday night against undefeated Lakeshore, the Sharks came within a whisker of being a spoiler before bowing 4-3. Skating stride for stride and shot for shot, the locals were just a bounce away from edging out a victory. They held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 but as they have found out in previous games, the top tier opposition pounce on even the smallest of errors. The Sharks’ undoing was a four-minute span late in the second period, coughing up three goals. They traded markers in the third and despite a gallant effort they could not get the equalizer.

Ethan Carlone stood tall in the net. Braedon Caetano continued his goal streak notching two, while Devin St. Pierre added a single. Despite the setbacks, the coaching staff remains confident in the team’s ability to get to the next level. “We had several chances to break the game wide open on Wednesday, but were stymied by a hot goaltender,” they said. “Friday, we committed two bad breakdowns and had a unfortunate bounce that caused us to give up three goals.”

Sharks’ Goaltender Jackson Ford sprawls across the goalmouth to thwart a breakaway in the third period against Amherstburg last Wednesday.

Flyers, area kids both win with 5-1 romp of Komoka

Mason Reid tosses a bag of mittens onto the ice after the Flyers scored late in the first period of Thursday’s game. Mason was among 290 fans at the game, many of whom brought mittens, hats or scarves to toss for charity. SUN photo

By C. Scott Holland LEAMINGTON — On a night when it was time for reaping rewards and giving, the Leamington Flyers did both to help themselves and a great cause. With about 290 fans watching and waiting for the first Flyers’ goal,

Leamington did not let them down by scoring first and giving their fans a defensive treat, topping the Komoka Kings 5-1. The next night, they lost 5-1 to St. Marys and then on Sunday they completed a span of three games in four days by beating Sarnia at home 3-1.

Head coach Dale Mitchell was pleased with the efforts of his club. “Thursday was one of our most complete games of the season,” he said. “We allowed only 15 shots against us by a good team in Komoka. We played the right way and deserved the win.”

The head coach wasn’t as positive about Friday’s loss in St. Marys. “We were not good at all against St. Marys,” he said. “Credit to the Lincolns for not giving us anything offensively. As a team we weren’t prepared and St. Marys showed us why they’ve won seven in a row.” The victory on Thursday vaulted them back into second place temporarily. The throng of fans came with plastic bags holding toques, scarves and mittens for the area’s needy children. Hundreds of bags were tossed onto the ice at 15:09 of the opening period when Blake McNally ripped the handiwork of Jason Daraiche and Colton O’Brien past Kings’ starter Omar Hage. The flood of bags were quickly cleared from the ice and the contest continued as the Flyers struck again before

the end of the period on a goal by Wyatt O’Neil. The Flyers defense was stingy throughout the entire game and limited the Kings to 15 total shots over the 60-minute match. Ryan Polidori stopped 14 of them, while Hage finished with 37 saves. In the second period, the Flyers pounced quickly and tabbed their third marker only 41 seconds in. O’Neil slotted his second of the game, while Gabe Piccolo and Darby Lemieux led the initial charge. On a man advantage near the five-minute point, Piccolo and O’Brien jammed at a loose puck around the Komoka crease area but it was Andrew Uturo who finally stuffed the puck over the line past Hage for a convincing 4-0 lead. Near the frame’s midway point, a Flyers’ penalty allowed the Kings to get their only tally as Kaeden Johnston flicked

I’m like one of those carnival games--step right up and take your chances. The number of times I’ll let you stroke down my back and pet me is also a mystery. I’m just a big game of chance all around! There are a few things that can’t be left to chance. I am not fond of other cats at all, there will be instant grumbles and it will only get worse from there. the puck past Polidori. The third was rather tame, but the Flyers controlled the puck and added one goal to their total when Ryan MacPherson was right on the spot for a rebound which he hammered into the open side of the net. Playing two games in a 24-hour span is tough enough, but when the second contest involves the year’s longest road trip, it adds an extra dimension. For the Flyers, that long road trip ended in a 5-1 loss in St. Marys. Gavin Grundner scored his 13th of the season to account for the Flyers’ offence. The Flyers rebounded on Sunday afternoon as they topped the Sarnia Legionnaires 3-1 here in front of a crowd of 205. It was a rather speedy contest and was knotted 0-0 after one frame. But at 4:01 of the second, Noah Prudhomme pumped a goal for 1-0 lead. Early in the third, Ryan MacPherson jumped on a loose puck during a goalmouth scramble and it was 2-0 Flyers. Near the period’s midway point, Andrew Uturo blasted the puck past Sarnia starter Ethan Everaert to make it 3-0. Two penalties given to Leamington at 17:34 ruined the penalty-free game. During the game’s final minute, Sarnia tabbed their lone goal on a shot that bounced off Ryan Polidori’s stick. The Flyers outshot the visitors 44-21. On behalf of the Leamington Flyers, we’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and please stay safe. Schedule: Thurs. Dec.23 vs St. Thomas Stars at 7:10 p.m.

A 1952 Chevy truck from Saskatchewan

A charming story arrived from Leamington resident Mike Thibodeau: “In 1952, a truck rolled off the GM production line in Oshawa and went to the prairies to begin 30 years of farm work. In 1982 it was stored in a barn for the next 40 years.” Last June, Mike and his son Dave visited Saskatchewan. Dave bought that truck and they began the 1,400 km journey home on a trailer pulled by its new owner. “I liked the look of this model, and it appeared in really good condition,” said Dave, who pulled the ’52 home with his Chevy Duramax 6.6L diesel. Mike continues: “It is a Model 1430, one-ton truck with the 216 cubic inch straight six engine and weighs just under two and a half tons. A standard three-speed transmission has a bull low gear. “On the farm stood a huge vehicle crusher. Did Dave save the truck from the crusher? Probably. “Just weeks before Dave reached the truck, thieves had also spotted it, steal-

ing the radiator for its brass content. “On the trip home, the old trailer hauling the truck quit, but a welding shop in Thunder Bay helped Dave by giving him the run of the work yard, unloading and reloading the old truck on a new trailer. “An hour later outside Thunder Bay, two municipal workers stopped to chat while Dave inspected the trailer. When one of them was told of the stolen radiator, he immediately offered a replacement. He rebuilt roadsters as a hobby and the radiator, a left-over item, was a perfect fit. Ontario’s north is full of great people. “Today, Dave is pondering the restoration. The truck sat for 40 years and he is in no rush.” Always looking for stories. Email billtsherk@sympatico.ca

U13 Local League team drops heartbreaker LEAMINGTON — Southpoint Blue U13LL took on a strong Erie North Shore Green team on the weekend. into contention and they did with two goals coming from Gavin Butineillo. Both came on rushes down the ice. Southpoint’s Brent Pimental scored a third goal which put Southpoint in the lead. His shot came from the point and was set up by Gavin’s face-off draw back.

Erie scored early in the third to tie things up. As the third continued, Southpoint forwards were becoming visibly fatigued. They had played extremely well both ways, but nearing the end of the game Erie popped in the final goal of the game to win 4-3. It was a great game to watch.
