#Yes Ma’am Fashion Fundraiser raises $130,000 By Deanna Bertrand

LEAMINGTON – Fashion, food and fun was on the menu Friday night, March 6 for the #Yes Ma’am Fashion Show to raise funds for a contrast mammography machine for Erie Shores HealthCare. The event was held at Mastronardi Estate Winery and featured local vendors, from wine, produce, food, decorations and flowers to fashions. Fashion trends on the runway were modeled by area children, teens, men and women and were from designers Aggie & Francois and local retailers Clothing Bar, Willabee’s, Milana’s Menswear, Young Fabulous Children’s Boutique and Freeds of Windsor. Christine Colautti, Executive Director of Erie Shores Health Foundation (ESHC), said they hoped to reach $100,000 from the event with the monies earmarked for the “first of its kind” contrast mammography machine. When totals were in from the evening, the fashion show had surpassed the goal with a total of $130,000 raised. The Erie Shores Health Foundation capital fundraising campaign, Care Happens Here, has a goal of $15 million over the next several years to improve Health Information Systems and the Diagnostic Imaging Department at the local hospital. Colautti said they have already brought in $1 million of that goal.

LEAMINGTON – A new rehabilitation program is now available at Erie Shores HealthCare for patients who are medically stable and could benefit with additional therapy while recovering from their acute illness at home. eRehab is an innovative and efficient way to help patients return home from hospital as soon as it is safe to do so, with additional in-home therapy supports. “ESHC is pleased to have a collaborative partnership with the ESC LHIN and VON to enhance services from hospital to home. Currently, ESHC is referring eight patients per week into the program. This initiative improves length of stay, transitions to selfmanaged care and patient/family satisfaction,” stated Kristin Kennedy, Vice President of Patient Services and Chief Nursing Executive. The eRehab model, which is being successfully used at other hospitals in Erie St. Clair, places specially trained therapy assistants in the home under the guidance of a regulated directing therapist from a remote location. The therapist is able to provide real-time direction to several assistants at once with the use of electronic health tools including smart phones and tablets. The program started in October 2019 and expanded to the Emergency Department in 2020. Since then, the program at ESHC has seen 52 unique patients, all adult rehab, from all corners of Essex County. A Clinical Care Coordinator has been working at Erie Shores HealthCare to focus on coordinating care plans and support for eRehab patients.

Leamington Council continues to look at its policing By Sheila McBrayne

After hearing a report back from Michael Mitchell of MPM Consulting on the current level of services being provided by the OPP in Leamington, Council directed Mitchell to prepare a second report to establish the minimum desired levels of police service in the municipality. To start 2020, Leamington Council agreed on a three-year agreement with the OPP with the understanding that the contract could be terminated following a full year’s notice. Following Mitchell’s report, members of council agreed that the next priority should be taking direction on how to rectify the situation. Councilor John Hammond — who explained that the absence of answers on staffing numbers were frequently explained by the OPP as a confidentiality matter — made a motion requesting Administration to present a series of policing options to council, which was approved unanimously. At the Feb. 25 meeting, administration returned those options: 1) Continue with the OPP contract – Council approved the extension of a threeyear contract with the OPP commencing on January 1, 2020 – December 31, 2022. 2) Contracting Policing Services from another Municipality – Establishing a police services contract with a neighbouring municipality requires a fair and competitive procurement process to ensure the best value for service for the Municipality. 3) Re-establish a Municipal Police Service – At this time, the full cost of re-establishing a municipal police service has not been determined. Council approved the recommendation from CAO Peter Neufeld to proceed with the original plan to request that Mitchell prepare a second report regarding the establishment of minimum desired levels of police service for the Municipality.

Council approves John Street area design By Sheila McBrayne

LEAMINGTON – The second major project in the Master Plan for Uptown Leamington will be the reconstruction of the John Street corridor. Similar to the first project completed last year on Mill Street, traffic will be restricted to oneway, westbound from Erie Street to Queen Street parking lot. The purpose of the Master Plan for Uptown Leamington is to create a mixed-use space that provides attractive, efficient and accessible choices for the public (pedestrian, bicycle or transit) in concert with automobiles. The plan addresses the need for convenient, accessible parking, and supports the vision for the uptown area as a vibrant area for business and public activities. Last summer Council heard the findings of the RC Spencer study, which included several recommendations to assist traffic flow, increase walking, cycling, pedestrian flow and connect the uptown to municipal parking lots. Following RC Spencer’s report to Council, a Public Information Centre was held in September 2019 to gather public input. After Council’s comments and ideas from the Public Information Centre,

RC Spencer presented the completed redesign of John Street, Queen Street, the parking lot and the Italian Centennial Park. The design includes: • a multi-use path along the south side of John Street • bulb outs and angle parking between John Street and Talbot Street West. Bumper block and planters will be used as a test site, so the performance of the design can be monitored and can be easily removed and repositioned accordingly. • a planned connection of the Russell Street parking lot, alley #15, Mill Street West through Shotton Park, across Talbot West, and along Queens Avenue to the Italian Centennial Park and the John Street parking lot. With the proposed changes to the parking lot and redevelopment of Queens Avenue and John Street, there will be a total of 104 parking spaces, which is two more than the current configuration. Councillor Bill Dunn questioned the total number of parking spaces to ensure the final configuration would, in fact, have the same or a couple more than presently. Leamington’s Engineering Project Manager Alex Del Brocco assured Dunn that the area will actually gain two park-

ing spaces. A new concept introduced to this project is bulb outs and reverse-in, angle parking between John Street and Talbot Street West. This will be a test site, which will be monitored and will be constructed so that it can be changed. “It’s a great test site for any future parking projects… We feel this is a great opportunity to try the reverse-in parking,” said Del Brocco. A Public Information Centre was held in September of 2019 in regards to the project. Concerns over truck access to Gabriele’s Furniture and rear access to the businesses fronting Erie Street from the revised John Street Alley were some of the concerns. Administration has been working to accommodate these concerns. Councillor Tim Wilkinson and Mayor Hilda MacDonald both commented on how much they looked forward to the completion of this project. “I agree with Councillor Wilkinson. I’m very happy about this. I think it’s very exciting. It makes our community so much more appealing, rather than just the usual,” said MacDonald. Council passed the recommendation to approve the design of the project as presented.

Stolen backhoe used in wire theft

LEAMINGTON – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating the theft of a backhoe in Leamington that was later used to break into a fenced compound in Lakeshore where a large spool of wire was stolen. Sometime overnight between March 7 and March 8, a 2003 John Deere 310SG backhoe was removed by an unknown suspect(s) from a job site on Mersea Road 6. On March 9 at about 4:30 a.m., the same backhoe was used in a break-in to a fenced compound on Lake-

shore Rd. 125. Surveillance video captured an individual using the backhoe to pull a large spool of wire cable through the fence and then remove it from the scene. Anyone with information about these crimes is asked to contact the Essex County Major Crime Unit at 519723-2491. Should you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477 (TIPS) or leave an anonymous message at www.catchcrooks.com where you may be eligible

It’s an uneasy time in this world I went to Shoppers to pick up some hand sanitizer last week and the shelves were empty,

except for two little travel size bottles way in the back. Of course I scooped them up and have been sanitizing like crazy ever since. After a few weeks of speculation, we’re about to find out if the coronavirus is a dud or a stud. I’m really sitting on the fence with this one. I know people who are stocking up on bottled water and toilet paper and it makes me ask two questions: Are we expecting the tap water to become contaminated? Are we buying extra toilet paper for an illness whose symptoms don’t include diarrhea? That’s how serious the fear has become. And perhaps there’s merit to the fear. We have not seen the world’s medical community react like this in our lifetime. They are cancelling sporting events and I’m hearing that the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo are in jeopardy. The NHL’s San Jose Sharks have just been told that they can no longer allow fans to watch their home games for the remainder of the season. I’m struggling to put this into perspective. When I first started dating my wife, she was working in housekeeping at Hotel Dieu. So, she was a front-line worker when it came to healthcare, cleaning up operating rooms, patient rooms and lobbies where sick people gathered all the time. She was there during the SARS epidemic and I vaguely remember being told to wash and sanitize our hands while entering hospitals and nursing homes. I don’t remember anything more than that, and the death rate from SARS was about 10%. It was barely a blip on my radar. So far the death rate for Covid19 is about 3%. I’m probably missing the big picture but the only thing that will make this clear is time. They say by Easter, we will be in the midst of it locally and will have a better idea of what we’re dealing with. I feel like Evel Knievel getting loaded into that rocket plane that he took across the Snake River Canyon back in 1974. You know it’s coming, but have no idea what the outcome will be and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it. So buckle up folks, we’re in for a bumpy ride. Keep your Aquafina and Cottonelle handy, just in case.

Compassionate care IS close to home

Editor, “Compassionate care close to home” are meaningful words that the health care providers practice. As a result of my recent visits to the Erie Shores HealthCare Emergency Department, I have been grateful to receive such care! Even though I moved to Leamington ten years ago, I could not develop the courage to leave my family clinic located in a teaching hospital in Toronto. This was the result of receiving outstanding care for 35 years! Residence of Fish Hatchery Superintendent - This building was built around 1916, just east of Mill Creek, and provided housing for the Fish Hatchery Superintendent and his family, as part of his condition of employment. It was a large two-storey frame building with shingle siding. Superintendents included: William Parker, Samuel Adamson, Mr. Montgomery (Acting Manager); Joseph Oakes, Arthur E. Mouck, and Victor J. Walker. After the Hatchery closed, the land and buildings were turned back to the Town of Kingsville in 1963. The Superintendent’s house was used for a time by the Ontario Government Conservation Officer, and as temporary quarters for a local Youth group. The house was then sold around 1998 and moved to another location in town. (Second in a series of four).

Council looking into curb complaints By Sheila McBrayne

LEAMINGTON – Leamington Council has heard the complaints about the traffic calming measures put in place recently and is willing to look for compromises. In a report from Allan Botham, Manager of Engineering Services, a recommendation was made to hire WSP to complete a peer review of the unpopular projects including the chicane on Danforth Avenue; curb bulb outs on Mill Street West; traffic islands along Erie Street South; and curb bulb outs on Coronation Street. Council approved the peer review in hopes of reaching compromises that utilizes the Ontario Traffic Manual, experiences, published guidelines and other available municipal policies. In its investigation, administration reached out to a respected traffic and transportation engineering firm that worked in Leamington in the recent past on its Active Transportation Plan, Long Range Transportation Plan and the Short Term Transportation Action Plan - WSP, formerly MMM Group. WSP will provide a third party peer review. Due to their province wide expertise, familiarity with the community, and the fact that they are not in competition for local engineering design work, make them a good fit for the project. WSP will prepare an opinion letter complete with their findings and rationale. If need be, WSP will also identify and recommend changes to recent construction projects. Changes could range from pavement markings and signs, to reconstruction of pavement and curbing. “Can you look me in the eye and tell me that these consultants will disagree with you?” asked Mayor Hilda MacDonald of Botham after he presented his report which recommended the hiring of WSP to complete a peer review of the recently installed traffic calming measures. “I don’t know that any of us disagreed with the reason for the traffic calming measures… I’m just wondering,

can we save ourselves the money if they are just going to agree with you?” asked MacDonald. “To answer your first question, I can look you in the eye and tell you they will probably not agree with everything we did,” stated Botham. “They will generally agree and offer an honest opinion… I hope it will give administration and council more confidence in what we’re doing,” he added. Councillor John Hammond asked if the review came back and suggested that curbs were too narrow, would they be able to make the changes? “We can look at minor modifications, not whole scale changes,” answered Botham. Councillor Paul Tiessen stated that the altering of Coronation worked. “If we are hiring a couple of engineering firms in town to do these, shouldn’t they be aware of that? We shouldn’t need another engineering firm to tell us, so that we can tell them, what works and what doesn’t. They should already know this,” said Tiessen. Councillor Tim Wilkinson was surprised to see the report come back to council to ask for a peer review. “I have all the faith in you that you and your department… Say to them – ‘we reduced Coronation by 50% and it was well received by public and council, give us a cost on doing that to Danforth, Mill Street, wherever’ and then you come to council with that report and costs… I’m not in favour of the $16,000 for a peer report,” said Wilkinson. “Currently we’re relying on one engineering firm to do that for us, and I just don’t get the sense that council is necessarily confident in some of things we’re doing and having a third party firm that has a national presence would give us both confidence moving forward,” said Botham. Council passed the request for a peer review after listening to pro and con statements about further study on the matter. The review is expected to be complete by May 2020 at a cost of $16,800.

Need for concrete barriers on 401 needed now

CHATHAM-KENT – While Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney announced an “Expression of Interest” for a small section of Highway 401 between Tilbury and London on Wednesday, Feb. 26, wintry weather created havoc on the same stretch of road. At the time of the media release, OPP West Region reported dozens of collisions in West Region, some resulting in serious injuries and road closures. According to the OPP, a typical night is 20. This included multiple incidents on Highway 401’s “Carnage Alley” between London and Tilbury. “The irony is not lost on us that the same day of an announcement from the Minister was a day of very dangerous conditions on a very dangerous highway,” stated Alysson Storey, founder of Build the Barrier, a grassroots group advocating for concrete median barriers between London and Tilbury. “It just reinforced to us that we cannot afford to delay this project any longer. Lives are at risk every single day here on Highway 401.” These collisions included at least one crossover, vehicles in medians and ditches and resulted in multiple closures of the 401, including full closures of westbound lanes at Colonel Talbot Road, Communication Road, Bloomfield Road and Queen’s Line. “If last night’s carnage on the 401 wasn’t a reminder that we cannot afford to wait another minute to start making this highway safer, I don’t know what is,” states Storey. “We had at least four different full highway closures due to col-

lisions in the course of just a few hours. This also puts our emergency responders at unnecessary risk, which no one should find acceptable.” The announcement from the Province stated they are proceeding with an Expression of Interest to procure a contractor to widen and install concrete median barriers on 11 kilometres between Tilbury and Merlin. This project will include widening from four to six lanes, a new storm system, safety improvements and construction of a concrete median barrier. “We welcome this Expression of Interest to get us one step closer to saving lives in Carnage Alley,” states Storey. “But when timelines aren’t included in a project announcement, it obviously causes us concern. Timelines are important accountability tools and seeing them included would send a message that this government is serious about road safety. After last night it’s clear we have no time to waste. Let’s get to work.”

March is being monopolized by Happy Birthday congratulations to much of the Dawson family. Sisters Anna and Megan Dawson on March 10 and 20 respectively and their grandfather Lyle Dawson will be celebrating his fantastic 94th birthday on March 24. Sharon Campbell-Rayment was totally surprised when a large number of St. Andrew’s, St. Luke’s and St. Talbot Street members poured into Trinity United in Wallaceburg to help celebrate her Covenanting Service last Sunday. And, befitting a United Church, a potluck followed. My apologies for missing many social news items, births, deaths and birthday and anniversary celebrations over the last three months. My husband Tom’s passing at A HUGE age 93 and the bequeathal of his body for science was one of those events. However, as the family joke to all the participants, goes: “After all these years, volunteers and donors that helped us raise $10,000 he finally got accepted into for Maryvale Adolescent Medicine at Western.”

Softly in the morning you heard a gentle call You took the hand God offered you and quietly left us all. The day you left us mom, our hearts just broke in two The small part is still with us and the biggest part with you. For the rest of our lives we will miss you mom, our secret tears still flow Oh how we really loved you, no one will ever know. We miss your smile, your joking ways, we miss the things you used to say And when old times we do recall, it’s then we miss you most of all. You were always there when we needed you, no task was great or small With loving heart and willing hands, for us you did it all. Missing you Mom, Hugs and Kisses Sheila & Butch, Joann & Ron, Fred & Sandra, Bernice, and grandchildren Give Dad a hug and kiss for all of us too.

We little knew the day that God was going to call your name, In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, but in God we put our trust, In times as difficult as this, faith is such a must. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide, And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. Gone but never forgotten.

Tough questions for ERCA

By Sheila McBrayne

LEAMINGTON – Representatives of ERCA were met with some stern questioning from Leamington Council. At the Feb. 25 meeting of Council, Kieran Mc Kenzie, Chair of ERCA, and Richard Wyma made a presentation on programming, successes and challenges from 2019 and looking to 2020. McKenzie described 2019 as “an unprecedented year of challenges with flood warnings from April to October.” During the year the province cut flood funding by 50 per cent. “2020 looks to be another challenging year as Lake Erie is currently 12 inches higher than last year.” McKenzie reminded council how important partnerships with municipalities are, “especially over last year and this year with ever increasing water levels in our Great Lakes,” he stated. Richard Wyma, General Manager of ERCA, presented a review of various programming and initiatives of ERCA over the past year and looking forward. “2020’s looking to be another hybrid year, building a five-year business plan with government changes,” said Wyma. ERCA has a $10.5 million budget for 2020, which Wyma equated to $10.49 per person. This ranks ERCA in the top 10 of the province’s 36 Conservation Authorities. Councillor Tim Wilkin-

son was first to question Wyma on the Community Energy Plan, which recently asked Essex municipalities for $15,000 to fund. Wyma was quick to point out that ERCA was asked by Essex County Council to co-ordinate the program. ERCA was asked to make the grant request on behalf of the County. “It’s a more robust plan on how, collectively as a region, we can use and manage our energy needs better,” said Wyma. Each municipality in Essex County was asked to pledge $15,000 towards the $280,000 study. Councillor Wilkinson asked what the municipality’s return on investment would be. “There’s tremendous opportunities, but I don’t know what the return on investment would be exactly,” said Wyma. He pointed to similar studies conducted in Windsor and Chatham-Kent that have been completed. All Essex County municipalities have approved the $15,000 request except Kingsville, which is slated to discuss in March and Leamington. Councillor Paul Tiessen asked about the policy of ERCA in approving permits. It was clarified that not all permits from the municipality must be approved by ERCA, but all permits in the ERCA regulated area would be sent in for approval. Wyma stated that last year ERCA dealt with 1,300 permits and 900 planning applications. Councillor John Hammond reminded Wyma of the importance of Leamington’s shoreline erosion and

LAC

flood advisories. Mayor Hilda MacDonald told Wyma that the 5% increase asked of council at budget time was not passed lightly. “Your increase of 5% created a lot of discussion… we are strong in our opinions on your increase.” She noted that although Leamington passed the 5% budget increase, it did not pass the $15,000 request. “This should be on the province, not taxpayers. So for us, this wasn’t just a quick blip on budget day… We are not climate change deniers, but there’s a limit to what the taxpayer can do based on property taxes,” stated MacDonald. “I’m sorry if the young people are disappointed in their community for us not supporting this, but we are doing our best,” said MacDonald. “The majority of our residents do not have the warm and fuzzies when it comes to ERCA,” stated MacDonald after relating a story of poor customer service from ERCA. Wyma responded that the role of the conservation authority has not changed since the Conservation Authority Act was passed in 1946. “What has changed is how we structure programs and services. We do appreciate the challenges that municipalities face,” said Wyma. He also pointed out that 60% to 65% of their programs and services are not funded by the municipality or province, but from their own funds.

Edith Knight

Edith Knight went to be with her Lord on Sunday, March 8, 2020. Born Edith Moorcroft in Montreal, March 18, 1928, she moved to Windsor in 1940. On July 12, 1947 she married the love of her life, Ray Knight, who predeceased her on July 29, 1997. They had six children: Cathy (Jeff Watson); Sharon (late Bob Bailey, March 8, 2020); Lorie (Larry Begin), Bob (Louise Laroche); Kevin and David. The family moved to Point Pelee in 1957, where Ray served as a Park Warden for many years. After his retirement, Ray and Edith moved to Leamington. Edith was active in the Essex County Weaver’s Guild and volunteered in several Leamington-area charitable organizations. She was deeply committed to her church, St. John the Evangelist, Leamington, where, among other things, she sang in the choir until she was almost 90. A committed Canadian, Edith was also deeply proud of her Irish heritage, and in her eighth decade became a citizen of the Republic of Ireland. Edith was adored by her children, nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. She will be deeply missed. A special thank you to the staff of Seacliff Manor and Erie Shores Hospice for their care and compassion. Visiting was at the Reid Funeral Home and Reception Centre, 14 Russell Street, Leamington (519-326-2631) on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 from 6-9 p.m. Visiting continues at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, 60 Erie Street North, Leamington, on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Funeral Service to celebrate Edith’s life at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Robert (Bart) Bailey

The world just became a much quieter place with the passing of Bob (Bart, if you grew up in Wheatley) Bailey on Sunday, March 8, 2020 after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. He is survived by “the love of his life”, wife of 50 years, Sharon, sons Rob (Linda) of Wheatley, Matt (Kristina) of Chatham and daughter Erin (Ron) Fick of Windsor. Proud and loving grandpa to Darson, Jensen, Paige, Liam and new baby coming this summer, and stepgrandpa to Amanda and Myles. Born August 18, 1949 to parents Leonard and Elaine Bailey (who liked him best) and survived by stepfather George Fast, brother Gary (Marilyn) Bailey of Essex, sister Cheryl (Dan) Durocher of Belle River and many brothers-in-law and sisters-inlaw and nephews and nieces who will miss their Uncle Bob. Bob was a lifelong resident of Wheatley, a commercial fisherman for most of his working life. He loved his community, coaching for many years with minor baseball, volunteering with hockey, driving the bus for the Sharks and spent many years as a volunteer firefighter. He had a passion for sports, mostly golf and bowling (both participating in and watching on TV with a death grip on the remote control, sound asleep) and was a lifelong fan of the Detroit Tigers, Red Wings and Lions. One of the highlights of his life was a trip to the Masters practice round in Augusta. He was fortunate to have travelled to Europe several times, the East Coast and Florida where he made many new friends over the 20+ years vacationing there. He never met a stranger and there was nothing he liked better than an interesting or lively conversation with a good or new friend, even in foreign countries where he didn’t speak the language. He was famously loud and opinionated and will surely be missed at Lil Hil’s where he spent many mornings drinking coffee and debating with the guys. Bob was a strong man with a big heart, always ready to lend a helping hand. This has been reciprocated with the many offers to take him to treatments, good wishes, prayers and visits from friends. Special thanks to friends Richard Dibbley, Charlie and Shirley, Ron and Katie for being there to help us out as Bob’s illness progressed. Thank you to the LHIN, Bayshore and VON, especially Paula and Maggie who treated Bob with no-nonsense kindness and humour in his last few months. Thanks also to all of the hard-working nurses at dialysis and the PSWs who helped out at home. Friends can visit with Bob’s family at Kendrick Funeral Home, 17 Little Street South, Wheatley, on Thursday, March 12, 2020 between 3 to 5 p.m. or 7 to 9 p.m. If you wish, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice. Memories can be shared with the family at www.Kendrickfuneralhome.com Everyone who remembers Bob is asked to celebrate his life in their own way. Raising a cup of coffee in his memory at Lil Hil’s would be appropriate. As per his wishes, the first 100 bucks is on him.

Our heartbroken family announces the passing of Greg Gare, late of Leamington, in his 73rd year. He leaves behind his beloved wife Sheila (Kelly). They had 49 years and 8 months of an awesome adventure together. He always “got” her quirky humour – and was her perfect partner in crime. He is sadly missed by his sons Brian and Michael (Gillian). Loving son-in law to Margaret Kelly. He leaves behind his little sister Gwendolyn Woods (Lorne). He was a proud and adoring “Papa” to Willow, Poppy and Molly. He was ecstatic to hear about #4 on the way, his “little peanut”. He is survived by his sisters-in-law Nanette Thierry (Donald), Karen Kelly, and brother-in-law Rick Kelly. He leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family. Over his long-spanned career, his passion for people showed itself in his early years at Beaver Lumber, then on to selling Xerox equipment, and finally selling transport truck insurance for Ives Insurance. He truly could have sold ice machines to Eskimos! Bridging his professional and personal life was his involvement in Kinsmen where he gave hours to community services and where he met so many of his close friends. In his personal life it was about: • the perfect golf score (hardly... but there was a holein-one once!) • the perfect songs he sang (he always had a beautiful tenor voice, and loved his Knox Church choir family) • the countless jokes, stories and adventures with his far-reaching circle of friends • the perfect dance steps that Nicole tried so hard to teach him (most of the time he listened to her) • the perfect yoga plank which he could hold forever (he loved his yoga family at Green yoga) • the perfect cribbage hand – oh Fred, the money you made off of him! (well, usually only $10!) • the hours of cards with his lunchtime buddies – he loved you all • the perfect poems he created, and they were beautiful! • the perfect sunrises he gloried in watching as he praised each new day His family greeted friends and loved ones at Reid Funeral Home, 14 Russell Street, Leamington (519-3262631) on Tuesday from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial Service to celebrate Greg’s life at Knox Presbyterian Church, 58 Erie Street South, Leamington, on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at 11 a.m. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.reidfuneralhome.ca Memorial donations may be made by cheque to “Knox Presbyterian Church of Leamington - Kintail Camp Funds” to send children to summer camp, or online to the “The Bridge” (thebridgeyouth.ca/donate-today/) to help youth homelessness in the community. A special thanks to the staff from the Windsor Regional Hospital - Ouellette Campus, CCU 4th Floor - Dr. Sieniawski, Dr. Eli Malus, Dr. Natalie Malus, Dr. Dighe, his cardiologist, Sharra, Jessica, Matt, Cameron, Christine, Heather, Meaghan, and all the others whose names we missed or forgot in our time of stress. Thanks also to Stephanie from the Trillium Foundation - people, please donate your organs as they are so desperately needed! Special thanks to PC Lauzon, PC Abdeljaber, Tenille Smith and any others who rushed to Greg’s aid. All of you are truly angels walking among us.

PLEASE JOIN US COMMUNITY INFORMATION CENTRE FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION LINE FROM CHATHAM-KENT TO LAKESHORE You’re invited to a Community Information Centre for a new transmission line from Chatham–Kent to Lakeshore. A safe and reliable power supply is essential to supporting economic growth. As businesses and industry in southwestern Ontario continue to expand, so does the need for more electricity. That’s why Hydro One is proposing to construct a new double-circuit 230 kilovolt transmission line from our Chatham Switching Station located in the Municipality of Chatham-Kent to the future Lakeshore Switching Station, which will be located in the Town of Lakeshore. We’d like to hear from you As part of the planning process for the project, Hydro One will be conducting a Class Environmental Assessment (EA) in accordance with the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act. During this process, we will be gathering input from residents, First Nations communities, businesses and stakeholder groups to help us evaluate the route alternatives as shown on the map below. Consultation and engagement is important to Hydro One’s Class EA process, and we invite you to drop by one of our upcoming Community Information Centres to learn more about the project and provide your feedback.

Robert Whitmore (now in Calgary) was living in Toronto in 1960 when he purchased a rust-free 1935 Hudson Eight sedan for $75. “It had chromed extended horns at the front, a chromebar foot rest on the rear floor, and pull-down window shades,” recalls Robert. “I still have the original owner’s manual which says ‘Hudson Motors of Canada, Tilbury, Ontario.’” One of its unique features was the Electric Hand which assisted in shifting gears, a big step toward automatic transmissions later on. The man selling the Hudson in 1960 said a Toronto stockbroker was the original owner. Soon after buying it, the car was in an accident and a child was killed. The owner never drove the car again. Robert and his brother got it running but had to sell it two years later because they lost storage for it. By 1970 it was on a classic car lot run by Duncan Showler in St. Catharines, where a teacher from Grand Valley near Orangeville bought it. He sold it in 1976 to Carl Oliver, now of Holland Landing, Ontario. Carl has given the car a total restoration spanning many years and the car

“Some have to book in Windsor. Stoney Creek teams have been booking the Best Western since they were atoms. The parents loving being able to look over a balcony and see their kids swimming.” Teams were again arranged into two pools for round robin play, with the top two teams from each group qualifying for semifinal matches on Sunday. For the intermediates, the leader from each of three pools qualified for semis, along with a ‘wildcard’ with the most points among the three second-place teams. Through round robin, two points were earned for a win while a point was registered per each period won and a bonus point was assessed for a team posting a shutout. “It’s a system that forces teams to come up with different strategies and makes them play hard for all three periods,” Dries explained. “On our end, it helps avoid tiebreakers. I hate to see teams miss the playoffs based on goal differentials, fastest goals or worse, a coin toss.”

For organizers of one of the region’s most popular girls’ hockey events, the number 13 didn’t turn out to be unlucky after all. The Southpoint Minor Hockey Association (SMHA) hosted the annual Keith Lindsay Memorial Tournament at each of its three available rinks Friday, Feb. 28 to Sunday, March 1. This year’s instalment of the three-day event drew 40 teams including six hosting Southpoint Stars squads, representing an average participation rate in recent years. “Having a total of teams somewhere in the 40s works out best,” explained SMHA director of girls hockey Greg Dries, who coordinates each year’s KLM tournament along with his wife Kelly Dries. “They’re comfortable numbers to work with for our three rinks.” Twice, the tourney has welcomed more than 50 teams. When the event began as the March Break Kickoff Tournament 13 years ago, the turnout of registered teams averaged less than 20. Since the passing of SMHA girls hockey coach Keith Lindsay in November of 2009 — when the tournament was both renamed and moved ahead to late February — the count of participating teams began growing steadily. “Every hotel in Leamington is filled,” said Greg Dries.

Volleyball tournament raises $10,000 for charities

LEAMINGTON – The 9th Annual Charity Volleyball Tournament was phenomenal, according to organizers, with a recordbreaking 45 teams representing four divisions hitting the hard courts on Saturday, Feb. 22. Maryvale Adolescent & Family Services was the recipient for the monies raised and volunteers from the organization were onsite assisting throughout the day. Games were played at four venues: Leamington Kinsmen Recreation Complex, Leamington District Secondary School, Cardinal Carter Secondary/Middle Schools and UMEI Christian High School. This was the ninth tournament organized by Karen Repko, Leasa Barkovsky, Ryan Whittle and Kristine Verbeek. The Competitive Division final was an incredible battle to the end with Team Josh narrowly beating their rivals to take the top spot. The action during the Intermediate Division finals also did not disappoint with Sweet Digs Too coming up with the win after having to beat their competitor twice in the finals. The Recreation Division saw an increase in talent this year and Team SWAT was able to fend off the others in the division to be the winners.

The Leamington Flyers are moving on to the Western Conference Semifinals after sweeping the Komoka Kings with four straight wins in the best-of-seven quarterfinal series. The first three games saw Leamington win 5-0, 5-0 and 5-2. Game 4 was in Komoka on Wednesday, March 4. Wyatt O’Neil netted Leamington’s first goal at the 12:01 mark of the second period. Assist went to Zach Taylor. Kade McKibbin added the second marker to end the second period, with assists to Adam Jeffery and Nicholas Beneteau. The Flyers added two more goals in the third period. Jeffery netted his second goal, assisted by McKibbin and Thomas Michaud. The final goal of the game and the series went to Blake McConville, assisted by Taylor. Flyers goalie Ryan Polidori turned away 22 shots on net for the shutout. The Flyers will meet the St. Marys Lincolns in the semifinal, best-of-seven series. St. Marys eliminated the Strathroy Rockets four games to one. Leamington finished the regular season in second place in the Western Division 12 points ahead of third place St. Marys.

The Corporate Division again had teams representing several companies/organizations in the area coming together for this great cause. There were sore muscles but plenty of laughs, and after the dust settled, Mighty Maryvale came out on top as the victors. Along with the money and

items donated for Maryvale Adolescent & Family Services, items were also collected for the Leamington Salvation Army Food Bank, a regular beneficiary of each tournament. After the knee pads came off and pain relief cream applied, an amazing $10,000 was donated along with an

In the last game of their playoff round, players for Southpoint Atom Red and Southpoint Grey put on quite a show. Both teams scored in the first. For Grey, Kyle Bradley made a beautiful pass out in front to Nic Magri who backhanded it in. Red responded with one of Ryan Krueger’s four goals, all of them end-to-end rushes. An assist went to Keagan Hatt. In the closing minutes of the second period, Nic stole the puck at Red’s blue line and maneuvered around a “D” to score. Kyle picked up another point for the assist. Thirty seconds later, Ryan returned the favour with an assist going to Keagan. Ryan scored early in the third and Connor Rumble-Anastacio balanced the score on his own end-to-end rush. Ryan gave his team a one-goal lead midway through the third and an assist went to Marcus Hopkins. The final score of the game went to Grey. Gavin Butiniello took a couple of shots on Brayden Hutchingame Lumley. Picking up one of his rebounds, he went behind the Red net and centered a pass out to Nic who promptly put his third goal in. The score ended 4-4. Both goalies, Brayden and Ty Gould, made great saves. With the point earned, Southpoint Community Trophies Atom Grey will move on to the semifinals.

Atom Minor A faces New Hamburg in semi-final

The Southpoint Point Pelee Karting Atom Minor A Capitals continued their OMHA semi-final series with the New Hamburg Huskies this past weekend with the six-point series tied at two. On Friday, the Capitals hosted New Hamburg with hopes of a win to advance to the provincial final. Southpoint came out a little flat and as a result the Huskies scored on a Caps giveaway. Midway through the second, Southpoint gave up a breakaway which Karly Franklin, in net for the Capitals stopped, and New Hamburg was allowed to keep banging away at the rebounds until they finally knocked it in to go up by a pair. The Caps kept generating numerous scoring chances but were stymied by the

2020

Huskies goalie. Finally with 1:02 remaining, Kayden Cook backhanded a shot towards the net and in to halve the score. That was as close as the Capitals would come in a disappointing 2-1 loss. On Saturday, the Capitals hosted New Hamburg in a matinee. Southpoint, at 6:17 of the opening frame, while shorthanded, Ben Liebrock hit Tyler Thomas with a pass to send him in alone. The goalie stopped the initial shot, but Liebrock, following the play, banged in the rebound to take the lead. Thomas fired a shot low on net and Liebrock made no mistake with the rebound to go up by a pair. The score remained the same until the third. Two minutes in, while on the power play, Kayden

Cook sent a pass back to Jonathan Recker at the point. Recker fired his shot at the net and Liebrock made a nice tip between the goalies pads to complete his hatty. New Hamburg scored shortly after but the result was a 3-1 victory for the home team to set up a game five back in New Hamburg on Sunday. Maybe it was the long bus ride or the loss of an hour’s sleep, but Southpoint came out slow in this contest. They battled hard but just barely hung on in the early part of the opening period. With 4:18 on the clock, Ben Liebrock let go his shot low blocker to take the lead. Four minutes into the second period, while on the power play, Jonathan Recker grabbed the puck just outside the line and weaved in

through both defensemen, deking the goalie and slipping the puck into the open cage to go up by two. New Hamburg scored four minutes into the third while on a power play. It stayed that way until 3:11 remaining when the Caps left a man wide open in the slot and he was able to even the score. With the game tied at two, both squads were headed to overtime. Both sides had scoring chances early as the extra time was back and forth exciting hockey. With a little over five to play, the Huskies managed to break in on a two on one with the shooter hammering in his slap shot to win the game and the series. Although Southpoint was obviously disappointed in the result, each player can hold their head up high and

be very proud of all that they have accomplished this season. In fact, in an incredible show of sportsmanship the few hundred New Hamburg fans that had watched the

game gathered in the lobby and clapped in appreciation of the Southpoint players as they left the rink as a team. Win as a team, lose as a team.
