Take an Uplifting Ride Journey 11,500 feet to the top of Humphrey’s Peak at Arizona Snowbowl. Snowy in the winter, green the rest of the year, the views will take your breath away.

Find Your Center at Mii amo Unwind in ultimate luxury with a stay at Mii amo. The resort and spa’s focus on harmonizing mind, body and spirit will leave you feeling at total peace with the world.

Explore Sedona’s Backcountry A stop in Sedona is a must for any road tripper. Hit the plentiful hiking and biking trails, or see red rock country with a rollicking guided Jeep tour.

Drink Up in Wine Country A couple of hours north of Phoenix, you’ll find one of Arizona’s three wine countries—the Verde Valley. Nearly two dozen wineries offer you a taste of their grapes, from sauvignons to syrahs.

THAT VACATION

WON’T PAY FOR ITSELF. Switch to GEICO and save money for the things you love.

Maybe it’s finding the perfect restaurant in the travel guide for that local flavor. Or landing in a new city you’ve never been to. Travel is what you love – and it doesn’t come cheap. So switch to GEICO, because you could save 15% or more on car insurance. And that would help make the things you love that much easier to get.

Gary’s Greeting

Thank You, Herb! It’s interesting to me how some of America’s most iconic companies take on so many of their founders’ characteristics. Apple and Disney are two examples that come to mind, and I’d certainly place Southwest® on that list. Every day, I see trademarks of Herb’s legacy around me—from the joy he had for life to the love he had for People to his unrelenting work ethic—and so many more. Herb passed away in January, but his legacy will live on forever. In this season of giving thanks, I’ve never been more grateful for our beloved Founder.

This has been arguably one of our Company’s most challenging years—certainly in my 33 years at Southwest—with Herb’s passing as well as that of former CEO Jim Parker, a string of unprecedented storms, a government shutdown, and the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX. The airline business is notoriously tough, and those of us who have been in this industry for a while like to say we have jet fuel in our veins (sometimes I think Herb might have had jet fuel mixed with Wild Turkey, but that’s beside the point!). We thrive on adrenaline and expect the

unexpected. Herb once quipped, “You can’t have a midlife crisis in the airline industry because every day is a crisis.” Herb knew from day one that he was not building a Company of planes, but rather a Company of People. He knew that if People are bound by love, are empowered to do the right thing, have the freedom to be themselves, follow the Golden Rule, work hard, have fun, and remain humble, then they would be prepared to not just survive, but prevail through any challenge. I’m a big believer that challenges don’t build character—they reveal it. I’m so proud of the resiliency and perseverance of the People of Southwest Airlines®— and never more so than this year. I know we will emerge stronger than ever, powered by both the profound lessons learned and legacy created by our legendary Founder and friend. Thank you, Herb!

Saludos de Gary

¡Gracias, Herb!

“Love what you do, and love who you do it with.” —WALTER ISENBERG, CEO, SAGE HOSPITALITY Walter Isenberg knows a thing or two about hospitality. The cofounder, president, and CEO of Denver-based Sage Hospitality, he got into the business washing dishes at a country club at 14. His love for the industry led him to start his own company 35 years ago, and today, Sage Hospitality manages 55 hotels and 14 restaurants in 20 states. As the firm has grown, its mission to enrich people’s lives one experience at a time hasn’t changed. But Walter’s passion for serving others doesn’t end there: He also co-created the nonprofit initiatives Dollars for Dreams, Sage’s hotel giving program, and Amp the Cause, which gives to local organizations that support children and families. It’s no surprise he loves to fly Southwest®, a Company dedicated to delivering outstanding Hospitality. Thanks, Walter, for being a kindred spirit. —Allison Boyce, Communications & Outreach LUV STORY “I was transferred to Houston shortly after I started dating Christie, my wife. I saw an ad in the paper for $19 nonstop Southwest flights from Houston to New Orleans, and I’ve been in LUV ever since—with both Southwest and Christie.”

MODEL BEHAVIOR “I’ve always been amazed that the growth of Southwest® has been explosive and yet the Culture and focus on People has been unchanged. It’s a great case study for all businesses to learn from.”

CAREER COUNSEL “An early mentor of mine told me to always take the time to get to know your people.”

WELCOME PARTY

From the Heart

Southwest® and Leon Logothetis are on a mission to spread kindness. “Where have you been?” That one question can inspire a variety of answers: You can tell someone not only where you’ve visited, but also who you are, what your story is, and the kindnesses you’ve experienced in your travels. This question is also the central theme of a new content series, Where have you been?, created in partnership with Southwest Airlines® and Leon Logothetis. Known as “The Kindness Guy,” Leon has traveled the globe in search of great stories while relying on the kindness of others. A TV Series Channel on Southwest’s Inflight Entertainment Portal, the show The Kindness Diaries captured those trips, and you can watch seasons one and two in the air. In Where have you been?, Leon travels with Southwest to cities near and far, using his welcoming man-on-the-street style to meet people and learn about their travels. During every encounter, he greets each person with a simple question: “Where have you been?”

In San Jose, California, Leon encounters a traveler whose journey has led to a better understanding of humanity. Upon landing in Phoenix, a traveler who has spent time in Costa Rica shares his take on pura vida and living life to the fullest. In our nation’s capital, Leon learns from a traveler who brings his guitar on each adventure, and in Denver, a hiker shares how completing 104 miles of the Colorado Trail restored her faith in humanity. Leon’s journey closes in Dallas, and as he explores the city, he hears of a man who flew on a whim to Nassau, Bahamas, with a woman and married her on the trip—the two are still married today. These heartfelt conversations reach the core of Leon’s mission to inspire others to leave their comfort zones and to spread kindness in their travels and everyday lives. Tune in now to the Where have you been? TV Series Channel on the Inflight Entertainment Portal, and let these stories inspire you on your journey. And once you’ve heard where these travelers have been, you have one more question to answer: Where do you want to go? —Deena Gemoets, Brand Partnerships & Entertainment PR

Community Outreach POWERFUL POINTS

Honoring Our Heroes

As the official airline of the Honor Flight Network, Southwest® supports veterans. Patriotism runs deep at Southwest Airlines®, and we’re proud to honor those who have given us the freedom to fly. Celebrating the brave military members who have served or are actively serving our country is important to us, especially around Veterans Day. Since 2009, Southwest has been the official airline of the Honor Flight Network. Through this partnership, we provide complimentary round trip travel that helps bring military heroes to Washington, D.C, to visit and reflect at their memorials. What began as a way to celebrate World War II veterans has since grown to reach veterans of other wars. Honor Flight has flown more than 230,000 heroes— at no cost—to see the memorials, including those for WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Intended as a heartfelt thank you to the veterans for

their service, these trips are also an opportunity for the veterans to be honored for their sacrifices and achievements. Southwest has provided travel for more than 9,000 veterans and their families, valued at more than $3.6 million. Additionally, since 2015, Honor Flight has been a Points for a Purpose partner, which gives our Customers the opportunity to donate their Rapid Rewards® points to Honor Flight to help support other trips. Recently, Southwest Captain John Freed and his father, Bob Freed, journeyed together from Houston to Washington, D.C., on an Honor Flight. Lt. Col. John “Dingo” Freed supported combat missions in Afghanistan and Iraq. Staff Sergeant Bob “Spider” Freed served in Thailand, the Philippines, and Japan during the Vietnam War. “As a veteran, taking my father on an Honor Flight was a trip of a lifetime,” John said. “The memories and friendships made on this trip will last forever. I am extremely proud to be an Employee of a company that supports Honor Flight.” With respect, honor, and gratitude, we thank you, veterans, for everything you have done for our country! —Lori Skinner, Community Outreach

My grandson, Ian, wanted to do something fun for his eighth birthday, but due to family circumstances, our options were limited. I suggested he spend the day with me at work at Southwest Headquarters so he could see the planes, and he agreed. During our morning meeting, he made sure to tell my Coworkers that it was his birthday. Some even gave him candy bars or other trinkets for presents. Then, without my knowledge, Senior Manager Programs & Administration Debbie N. ran out to buy cupcakes and a card. When they brought out the cupcakes and sang happy birthday to him, he was so surprised, and when he opened his card, there was $8 inside. None of this was expected, although it was greatly appreciated by me and Ian’s mother. It truly made Ian’s eighth birthday extra special. Debbie is a true Leader and cares deeply about everyone on her Team. Thank you for helping a little boy have an amazing birthday! —Senior Specialist Invoice Processing Susan C.

THE KINDNESS OF A STR ANGER

THAT’S WHAT I CALL AMAZING

My 2-year-old daughter and I arrived in Burbank, California, about four hours late on a Monday night. We were first delayed in Milwaukee, which caused us to miss our connection in Las Vegas. We were rebooked in Vegas on a later flight, which was also delayed. We were both exhausted and couldn’t wait to see Daddy. Unfortunately, my husband came down with the flu and wasn’t able to pick us up. I sat on the airplane in Burbank and wondered what to do with a sleeping baby and our luggage. Operations Agent Lawrence L. came to my rescue. He asked, “Your husband is waiting for you, right?” Tears dripped down my face, and I said, “No, he’s sick. I may just get a hotel.” He asked me where I lived, and after I told him, he said, “I’m taking you home!” He got us home safe, brought our luggage into the house, gave us a hug, and refused to accept gas money. He was our angel that night. —Southwest Customer Gaea V.

Customer Service Supervisor Maryann B. at Ontario International Airport went above and beyond to help with a medical emergency we had on our recent flight. Our 16-year-old daughter fainted on the plane, and when we got off the aircraft, Maryann came up to my wife and me and said not to worry—she and Southwest were there for us. She took our contact info, and then told us what the paramedics would be doing. She made us feel that our daughter was in good hands, and she was there by our side to answer any questions. She also didn’t leave until we got our luggage and were comfortable with our daughter’s condition. Not only did she do all that, but she also emailed me the next day to check in. I was amazed just by that, but Maryann went even further. Several days later, after returning from vacation, she emailed us again to check on our daughter. Dear Editor,

I had to write about how much I loved Laura Arenschield’s story about her dad and the National Senior Games [“The Fountain of Youth Has a Net,” September 2019]. I’m in the air now, wiping away tears, totally blown away. I was so moved by the story and the way Laura wove in life lessons throughout. I’m a filmmaker, and I kept thinking, This needs to be a documentary. I come from a competitive family who also loves ping-pong. Attached is a picture from Mother’s Day 2018, when I beat my mom in ping-pong. I felt kind of bad because it was Mother’s Day, but that’s how we roll. I hope her dad’s finger is OK. Laura’s article about senior pingpong was very enjoyable, and I could relate to it. I have enjoyed ping-pong for most of my 69

As Laura stated in her article, the social aspects of these sports are just as important as the sports themselves in helping to prolong lives. I’m involved with a pickleball group in the Raleigh, North Carolina, area, and we have more than 100 players, ranging in age from 40 to 89. We call ourselves the “Fun Bunch.” Our group is like an extended family with monthly social lunches to get to know each other better. Good luck to Laura’s dad at the National Senior Games in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 2021. I hope he brings home the gold!

MORE THAN A GAME

On a short flight from Baltimore to Detroit, I read Laura’s article about her dad and his ping-pong quest. I really enjoyed reading it and wish Laura’s dad success in Florida in a couple years. The story inspired me to think about trying to meet new people and gave me hope for my years down the road. I am a huge ping-pong fan, have a table in my game room, and frequently play with my boys. I like the thought of competing later on in life. Thanks for making my flight a little more enjoyable.

Travel & Real Estate

Better Management Means Better Vacations Vacation rentals are transforming the hospitality industry. Travelers of all types are opting to stay in a professionally managed vacation home over a traditional hotel — for many reasons. Extended families can reconnect over board games in the living room, far-flung friends can share recipes in the kitchen, and business travelers have plenty of space for their spouse and children to come along. However, in the competitive world of online reviews, creating a five-star experience for vacation rental guests involves more than just passing along the door code. Vacasa, North America’s largest vacation rental platform, cares for over 14,000 homes around the world and welcomes more than 2 million guests through its doors each year. The company’s full-service business model handles everything for vacation rental owners, including bookings, housekeeping and maintenance, local home care, 24/7 guest service, permitting, tax registration and more. Patrick Brady’s home — a sprawling, two-acre estate in West Ocean City, Maryland — welcomes guests in search of a vacation rental with room to run. The Brooklyn Estate and Cottage features a pool, hot tub, fire pit, basketball court and wood fireplace. Guests love the estate, but it requires a high level of care to keep the property’s amenities running smoothly. “A vacation rental is really only as good as its property manager, especially with a home like the Brooklyn Estate. If a guest arrives and discovers that the pool isn’t heated or that the hot tub isn’t functioning properly, it can truly make or break their stay,” said Brady. “Vacasa’s local team ensures that every inch of my property is cared for, and I can rest easy knowing that if an issue arises, it will be responded to and remedied quickly.”

vacasa.indd 1

The Brooklyn Estate - MD

Brady is also drawn to Vacasa’s dynamic pricing technology that keeps the Brooklyn Estate and Cottage booked year-round. The company’s extensive digital marketing and advertising maximizes bookings while their pricing algorithm adjusts rates in real time so that homeowners like Brady never leave money on the table. “While our property certainly sees a high number of reservations in the summer months and around the holidays, Vacasa is able to book the shoulder months that may not bring as many guests to the area,” said Brady. “We’ve experienced a doubledigit increase in rental revenue with Vacasa and because of that success, we’re trusting them with another one of our homes, The Manor at Brooklyn Meadows, now available.” Learn how Vacasa can help with all your vacation rental needs: vacasa.com/fly or 844.868.9428

Forget stepping on the stage to receive a Grammy or knocking down a championship-winning three. According to a survey conducted by Lego and The Harris Poll, small-screen star beat out other aspirational occupations like musician and professional athlete. In fact, kids ages 8 to 12 were almost three times more likely to want to be a YouTuber or vlogger rather than an astronaut—just 11 percent of youngsters polled reported dreams of traveling into outer space. We guess shooting for the stars isn’t quite as fun as becoming one.

GOING GLOBAL In China, 56 percent of kids said they wanted to be an astronaut compared to 18 percent with YouTube ambitions.

/ DES MOINES, IA You’ll find an international selection of street food at Dumpling Darling, like panfried potato pierogies. Pierogies are the stuff of legend: Some stories trace the dumplings’ origins to the 13th-century Polish saint Hyacinth.

SPOTLIGHT ON

Pierogies

Delores isn’t what you’d call a traditional Polish restaurant. The pink flamingos decorating the 10-foot mural in this bright, open space in Portland, Oregon, are a litt le too cheeky for that. Chef B.J. Smith knows classic comfort food when he sees it, however. And Smith is a family man. Thanks in large part to his late mother, for whom the restaurant is named, he’s been familiar with the joys of Polish cooking since childhood. The menu honors Smith’s Polish heritage with crispy potato pancakes, borscht, and, of course, pierogies. He pays further tribute to his mother’s memory by re-creating her favorite dish: the sweet cheese pierogi, made with honey-whipped lardo and garnished with cherries and puffed pearl barley. (Delores, not coincidentally, also loved flamingos.)

El Guapo

There’s a story behind every drink. El Guapo, served at Beatnik in Chicago, tells a tale from beverage director Jesse Filkins’ childhood. “El Guapo,” Spanish for “handsome man,” was the nickname Filkins received from his grandfather, whose house was always stocked with clay cups and a bottle of tequila. In the summertime, they would sit on the porch eating snacks with Tajín, the tangy Mexican seasoning powder. Filkins knew then that when he grew up, he would drink tequila just like his grandfather. Well, maybe not just like his grandfather. He’s been fiddling with the recipe—tequila, Tajín, guava puree—and he recently perfected the drink by infusing its agave nectar with Fresno pepper and mint. This light, zesty cocktail is the story’s happy ending.

↑ MAKE IT In a shaker with ice, add 2 ounces tequila, ¾ ounce guava puree, ¾ ounce Fresno pepper and mint-infused agave nectar*, ½ ounce lime juice, and 3 dashes grapefruit bitters. Strain over a double old-fashioned glass, and sprinkle Tajín on top. 34 Southwest november 2019

*In a pot, add 12 sprigs of mint, 6 Fresno peppers (cut into halves), 16 ounces agave nectar, and 16 ounces hot water. Bring the pot to a quick boil, then turn off the heat, and let it cool for an hour. Strain and refrigerate the nectar for storage. PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK CABRERA

TECHNOLOGY HAS MADE DATING MORE COMPLICATED & IMPERSONAL. HIRING A MATCHMAKER MIGHT BE THE ANSWER...

BREAKING UP WITH ONLINE DATING

A

t first, Larry Chiarelli, director at a tech start up, thought he was doing all he needed. Sign up on multiple dating websites. Meet lots of women. Eventually, the right one would come along – except she never did. So he decided to bring in the professionals and hired It’s Just Lunch. It’s Just Lunch’s matchmakers got to know him and his preferences. They selected his dates, arranged schedules, and even made the restaurant reservations. Dating became stress-free and fun. Larry was a practical guy and didn’t believe in love-at-first-sight… until IJL introduced him to Ping.

¤ ¤

Dating life before joining It’s Just Lunch? Lawrence: Chaotic! I was meeting a lot of women but not the right women for me. Online dating was time-consuming and stressful. I needed someone to relieve me of the dating busy work so I could get some breathing room. I needed to slow things down to speed them up. It’s Just Lunch fit that criteria perfectly.

8 0 0.858.6 526

it's just lunch breaking up.indd 1

Why join It’s Just Lunch? Ping: I fly frequently for both work and fun. When I saw It’s Just Lunch in the airline magazine, it was as if the matchmaker was talking to me! One day after a particularly long flight and wanting to snuggle with someone and watch a movie, I decided it couldn’t hurt to give it a try.

Most enjoyable part of the It’s Just Lunch process?

I’d call back, get the details and run through my availability. The next thing I knew I was in front of an interesting woman having a great conversation.

L: I tell my clients an analogy all the time: Would you rather drive across the country in a Toyota Corolla or a BMW 5 series? They always say the 5 series. You get what you pay for. Investing in yourself and your future with someone special means investing in the right matchmaking service. For me that was It’s Just Lunch.

L: Easy and convenient. The company I was working for was going through a merger so I was away from home quite a bit. I’d finish my day and there would be a message from my matchmaker telling me about my next match.

The success of It’s Just Lunch is built on creating high-quality matches in low-pressure situations. In 28 years, they’ve set up millions of first dates. Make meeting someone special a priority. Get in touch at 800-858-6526 or www.itsjustlunch.com.

Later in the day, baristas serve local craft beers and wine by the glass. The owner of Artelexia offers a fresh, authentic take on Mexican folk art. Elexia de la Parra’s earliest memories involve wandering Mexican markets with her grandfather, looking for artwork. Born in the U.S. but raised in Tijuana, she honors her heritage through Artelexia, a colorful boutique in the North Park neighborhood. The majority of the shop’s makers are Mexican, and goods range from Oaxacan chile jelly and enchilada cookbooks to embroidered textiles and papel picado banners. “I have a lot of first-, second-, and third-generation [Mexican Americans] come in and feel proud to see how Mexico is being represented,” de la Parra says. The shop’s sister company, Eat.Drink.Cook.Mexico., offers tours of Oaxaca and San Miguel de Allende, where visitors take cooking classes, visit artisans’ studios, and—of course—stroll the markets.

of us check work emails or take calls at least once a day on vacation.

Whether it’s fear of falling behind on the job or missing a crucial update, we’re turning our relaxing getaways into, well, just another day at the office. According to a survey of professionals conducted by LinkedIn, more than half of us have trouble leaving our 9-to-5 behind when we take time off. So, how do we put down our phones and close our laptops? LinkedIn suggests turning off your email notifications, creating a plan for co-workers to cover your responsibilities, and talking with your manager about a good time of year to take off. All that prep sounds like a lot of work to us—maybe we need a vacation from our vacations.

PTO PRIORIT Y Seventy-three percent of respondents reported that they would turn down a job offer if the vacation time offered didn’t meet their expectations.

BABY STEPS No matter what your dream is, you don’t have to jump in with both feet right away. There’s a way to test it on a small scale to discover whether it’s worth pursuing on a more serious level. OTHERS FIRST Throughout my career, I’ve found that if I’m too focused on me, things go wrong. SWEAT MORE Whether it’s working out, taking a walk, going for a swim, or fitness apps, movement is a huge piece of my life.

Marie Forleo

When I was a child, I would have these dreams about being a dancer, but I had never taken a dance class. My experience was limited to doing the moonwalk across my mom’s linoleum kitchen floor. When I was around the age of 25, pursuing dance felt impossible—most people in the professional dance world are winding their careers down at that age. When I started showing up to dance classes, I was probably a decade older than most of the other students. But it eventually led me to being a choreographer and producer for MTV, which led to me creating and producing commercials for brands like Nike and Reebok. None of that would have been possible if I hadn’t at least given myself permission to explore that dream. We have to be honest with ourselves that we have dreams we want to achieve and bring to life.

Here’s how founder and CEO Ariel Kaye describes the startup: Parachute was inspired by my love for home and interior design. I was helping a lot of friends and family decorate their homes and found myself looking for products and brands that didn’t exist. I wanted high-quality products from a brand that was transparent and didn’t use artificial dyes or toxic chemicals. Parachute started as an online bedding company in 2014, but my vision was always to build a home lifestyle brand. The bath was the next step, and we’ve moved into the living room with products like throws. Everything is

actually going to listen to accounts that they love and feel connected to. To me, that’s really the goal of social media.”

What creates that kind of connection? “Share what you care about and present your story in an authentic way. People will be able to see that. If you’re a budget traveler and you’re staying in a luxury hotel, your followers are going to stray away from you and what you have to share. I always tell people that you need to know your ‘why.’ What’s your purpose for sharing? And does what you do echo that? If it doesn’t, then rethink what you’re sharing.”

Don’t Fake It, and You’ll Make It

Forget all about your follower count, says digital brand strategist and blogger Helene Sula. Just be real.

Why is social media essential? “It’s not only a way to get new information, it’s the first place we go to connect with people.” How important is the size of your following? “My focus is never to have the largest following, but to have as much engagement as possible in an authentic way. I would rather have 15 followers that care than 1,500 that were just following me because of a pretty photo. People are always going to follow pretty accounts, but they’re

What does authenticity look like on social media? “It’s in the way you present yourself. You can be relatable, or you can be admirable. People want to hear your story. We want to relate to the people that we follow. I tell the stories that happened to me. I talk about the trials and tribulations that go with running a blog and traveling nearly full-time. Grace Bay Beach owes its pristine shoreline and calm waters to the Turks and Caicos barrier reef, which protects the area from harsh waves and pollution. You’ll find this undisturbed oasis on the northeast coast of Providenciales, an island known for water sports. Whether you parasail above the crystal-clear ocean, snorkel in nearby Bight Reef, or explore the region’s wetlands via stand-up paddleboard, aquatic activities are arguably the best way to experience Grace Bay. But feel free to take it easy: Grace Bay has plenty of hotels, restaurants, and shops. Stay: Wymara Resort and Villas

This coastal community is one of many beach towns sprinkled along the Florida Panhandle’s Scenic Highway 30A, but artfully arranged neighborhoods and stunning architecture make Rosemary Beach stand out. Browse boutiques and galleries in the town square, play lawn games in one of the area’s countless greenspaces, bike the network of pathways and boardwalks that connect the town’s candy-colored cottages, and sink your toes into the sugar-white sand that borders the Gulf Coast’s signature blue-green water. Stay: The Pearl

In 2006, this small village was designated one of Mexico’s “Pueblos Mágicos,” a program that honors some of the country’s most beautiful towns for their historical and cultural significance. The quaint landscape of Todos Santos is a welcome reprieve from the sleek resorts of neighboring Los Cabos. Cactus-lined desert roads give way to cobblestone streets in town, where you’ll find tiny art galleries and historic haciendas. Playa Cerritos is the go-to beach for swimming and surfing, while Punta Lobos is better for beachcombing and sunbathing. Stay: Hotel San Cristóbal

This town in western Jamaica boasts rainbow-hued shops and eateries near rugged cliffs, but its most famous attraction may be buzzy Seven Mile Beach. There, you’ll find crystal clear waters and white sand stretching for miles and miles—maybe not exactly seven, but who’s counting? Book a glass-bottom boat tour to see that beautiful water and pristine coastline from a different angle. Stay: Skylark Negril Beach Resort

Located 12 miles south of downtown Charleston, this laid-back beach town boasts some of the best surfing on the East Coast. Winter’s cooler temps and heavier winds bring bigger waves ideal for surfing—just don’t forget your wetsuit. (Pro tip: Equipment rentals and lessons are available at several waterfront places, including McKevlin’s Surf Shop.) Yearround fishing makes Folly Beach Pier an angler’s paradise. At Pier 101 Restaurant & Bar, you can enjoy live music and mai tais out on the patio. The hike to Gem Lake is more moderate, with unencumbered views of Estes Park and the Continental Divide. Stay: The Armstrong Hotel

Gold medal talent isn’t required to take advantage of the top-notch winter sport offerings at Lake Placid, the host of two Winter Olympics. In the shadow of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Reno can serve as a lively launching pad to explore the region’s many trails as well as the slopes around North Lake Tahoe. Hit the Hunter Creek trail in Reno’s high desert, or go snowshoeing to enjoy the area’s plush powder. North of Lake Tahoe, Mount Rose Trail offers one of the most scenic snowshoe hikes. A trip to Alki Beach Park promises views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains, plus ample space for walking, cycling, skateboarding, or roller-skating along the beach’s paved pathway. Although tours aren’t offered in winter months, the Alki Point Lighthouse is still a can’t-miss historical sight and photo op. An hour outside Seattle, Snoqualmie Pass is known for snowboarding and skiing—both alpine and Nordic. A little farther west, Annette Lake Trail is prime terrain for snowshoeing. Exploring the Olympic Peninsula while pregnant meant rethinking the way I traveled—and how I viewed my body. By Jaime Green Illustration by Alex Green/Folio Art

Once in a

BABYM ON T

he most obvious reason to travel north in winter is for off-season deals. The second-most obvious, at least when you’re pregnant, is the lack of Zika. Logistics aside, it’s beautiful and quiet, a good excuse for hotel room fireplaces and sleeping until the late-rising sun starts to burn off the fog. I was six months pregnant when my husband, Tanner, and I flew from New York to Seattle to spend four days in Olympic National Park. We followed that with two days in Seattle for an urban decompression before we headed home so we wouldn’t miss the trees too badly when we got back to Brooklyn. I could still fly, but not without compression socks and a little sling to make a footrest for my restless feet. I could hike, but nowhere treacherous and not too quickly. I could wander through an art museum, but only for so long before I had to sit down. Travel had never before been so much about the facts of my body. In a way, my body was the whole reason for the trip. It would be—I can’t say it without the widening eyes and raised eyebrows of ironic distance from the term—our babymoon. It’s an embarrassing portmanteau, but a beautiful idea: one last vacation, just the two of you, before the baby comes. It could be considered a celebration, but it’s more like trying to bank up vacation vibes for later on when you’re sleep-deprived and stuck at home, truly desperate for a break. I didn’t let myself dwell on the longer-term implication that this could be our last vacation just for the two of us. (I was determined, anyway, that this wouldn’t be the case; check back with me in five or 10 years to see how that pans out.) Travel has always been november 2019 southwest 59

browsing terminal snacks—with every interaction I wondered, Can they tell I’m pregnant? I was only just crossing that line. I rested my hand on my belly a little self-consciously, but also because I loved to feel the baby move, the only convincing reminder that I wasn’t just enduring an arbitrary sequence of physical annoyances. There was a baby, and he was with me. In Seattle, I fitted the rental car seat belt under my belly and realized that, for all the other reasons to take this trip now instead of when I was nearly fully cooked, I wouldn’t be able to fit in the driver’s seat for much longer. We drove two-and-a-half hours from SeaTac through smaller and smaller towns, into denser and denser forests until, in the last hour, night fell and we could feel more than see the trees towering at the roadside. The air smelled like cedar and soil and rain. I unpacked and hung up my four maternity shirts, leggings, and a pair of overalls that would’ve been two sizes too big for me six months ago but fit snugly now. The closet door had, of course, a

when Tanner and I feel most connected. Babymoon does have a secondary meaning—“a period of time for parents to spend alone with their new child shortly after the child’s birth”—but we were after the more common, more selfish usage. More than banking relaxation, I think we wanted one last chance to anchor our identities—as ourselves and as a couple—before everything changed. You’re not supposed to fly too late in pregnancy. By that biological timing, my babymoon fell in January, at the end of my second trimester. I work from home, so walking through the airport made me feel publicly pregnant in a brand-new way. Riding the AirTrain, going through security,

full-length mirror. I have a mirror at home, but there was something about this one—it was bigger and hung flush instead of leaning against a wall—or maybe it was the unfamiliar setting: I saw my body more than I’d seen it in a long time. I’ve never particularly prided myself on my butt, but now, I realized, whatever I’d once had was gone. I’d anticipated so many ways pregnancy would change my body, but nothing had prepared me for this salt in my vain little wounds. We strung together short hikes and excursions like beads on the twine of Highway 101: We pulled off into an unmarked parking area to hike five minutes to a stunning waterfall. We followed a small sign for “Big Cedar Tree,” which did not disappoint, towering and ancient, barely steps from the road. At Ruby Beach, a forest path led down to the coast, where a vast rocky beach stretched before us—on the other side of an obstacle course of driftwood logs. I’ve never been the best scrabbler, neither brave nor agile, but I felt even more daunted than usual. Pregnancy hadn’t made me particularly clumsy, but I’d been inundated with warnings: My center of gravity would be off, a fall could be terrible for the baby. I told Tanner, “I’m going to need more help than usual; I need you to go extra slow.” He stepped out ahead of me and reached back his hand, and we gingerly made our way toward the water. On the beach, I took pictures of the sky and the ocean and distant rocks and closer trees. Everywhere we went, I paused and took out my phone—I wanted to remember the waterfalls and lakes and woods, to have something pretty to put on Instagram and as a sense-memory investment for when I wouldn’t be on vacation but caring for a newborn. My vacation photos are usually either prettily framed pictures of vistas or selfies, solo or with Tanner. But this time, I asked him, sheepishly, to take pictures of me by myself. Wide shots, full body or from the knees up at least. In front of a waterfall or Lake Quinault, I self-consciously unzipped my jacket, turned to three-quarter profile, and tried to figure out what to

do with my hands. When we were done, I’d take the phone from his grip and swipe through, thinking, OK, I guess this is what I look like. I guess this is my body right now.

O

n our last day in Olympia, we drove as far north and west as we could, to Cape Flattery, the point of land jutting out toward Vancouver Island. My cellphone switched over to Canadian service as we drove across the upper edge of the peninsula. I had GPS directions running, but at a certain point you don’t need them: The road dead-ends at a parking lot, beyond which is only woods and rocks and the sea. It was gray and drizzly, and I zipped my parka up over my belly—just barely and, I had a feeling, for one of the last times. This trail, like so many others, snaked ahead of us downhill. This is a coastline too formidable for your car to take you all the way to the water. A small cache of walking sticks leaned on a trailhead sign. I took one as insurance against stumbling and for the return hike uphill. The forest was green and wet. The leafless trees were draped with moss, and the undergrowth was full of ferns. We wove down and down, until the land dropped out and, far below us, was the sea. The water was slate blue, a darker cousin of glacier runoff. It slammed into caves, and we could see across an inlet where the waves had eaten into the cliff face. The ocean foamed and frothed and slapped against stone that would surely wear away, too, in time. I’m using all these violent words, but it was less violent than november 2019 Southwest 61

kinetic, not dramatic so much as indifferent to anything human. When we finally, reluctantly, tore ourselves away—it was 4 p.m. and we had a long drive back to Quinault—we were trudging uphill when I said to Tanner, “Wait, stay there,” and scampered ahead. I turned back to face him and asked him to take my picture as I stood between two poufs of foliage, a hill of pine trees stretching up behind me. I didn’t pose or unzip my jacket; I didn’t even push back my hood. I just leaned a bit on my walking stick and smiled. I was tired and happy and totally in love with the place around us. I wasn’t thinking about my body at all. The next day we drove to Seattle and checked into a room at the Hotel Monaco downtown with a bathtub so big and beautiful I almost cried. At Uwajimaya, the Asian mega-market, I stocked up

I was tired and happy and totally in love with the place around us. on matcha candies and flavored potato chips. I also bought a pair of bath bombs, one for each night we had left. We spent a day eating piroshkis from Pike Place Market and soaking in the sublime weirdness of Letters From the Institute of Empathy at the Seattle Art Museum. I had to sit down after almost every gallery floor, stretching my hips as inconspicuously as I could. Instead of visiting a second museum, we went back to our hotel before dinner and watched TV.

F1_Essay_MW.indd 62

We think of babymoons as last-hurrah vacations, but it turned out that I needed it more for that moment of pregnancy than insurance against future wanderlust. I needed my new body to be in new contexts: navigating an altered center of gravity down a rocky slope, squeezing into a booth in a vegan pizza parlor, getting dressed and undressed in front of hotel room mirrors larger and starker than anything we owned at home. I never got to flaunt a maternity bikini, but I didn’t need to flaunt anything. I just needed to live in it. On our last night in Seattle, I ran the bath and dropped in a bath bomb to fizz. The steam didn’t fog the wall-wide mirror above the tub. And I didn’t shy away from my reflection when I got in. I didn’t gaze and admire, but I also didn’t mind. It wasn’t a question of good or bad or whatthe-hell-is-happening?—it was just me. Jaime Green is a freelance writer and editor. Holiday shopping can be a drag. Nothing will sap your festive spirit like a December visit to a packed supermall, or a long scroll down an Amazon shopping list. Enter Christkindlmarket, the market tradition that dates to 16th-century Germany and is realized here in the open air of Daley Plaza. Bundle up and walk by stalls hawking quaint gifts including handcrafted toys, jewelry, and beer steins. Get a beer, some roasted nuts, or chocolate for yourself. It’s cold out there, so we’d recommend a cup or two

For most of the year, the outdoor sanctuary and botanical garden known as The Grotto counts as one of Portland’s most serene and beautiful places. That’s especially true during the holiday season, when the Christmas Festival of Lights fills the garden with illuminated displays and (less visible but no less important) the healthy glow of holiday cheer. Walk the path and gawk at the lights, and then follow the sound of music into the chapel to catch a performance by one of the many local

Erik: I mainly met women through friends and work associates. It was always awkward and hit or miss. Danielle: I had been divorced for a few years and was trying to figure out how to get back into the dating world. The online thing was not what I wanted to do, and not the caliber of men I was look looking for. A friend of mine met her husband through It’s Just Lunch so I decided to give it a try.

Challenges of re-entering the dating scene? E: The rules had changed. It’s a part-time job and too much work to meet someone online. I wanted to meet someone face-to-face right off the bat. My time is valuable and I didn’t want to waste it getting to know someone in the virtual world only to realize “this isn’t going to work out”. D: I was out of the singles scene for a couple years. I liked It’s Just Lunch because it was a commitment to “I’m going to take that step and venture out.”

Benefits of working with a matchmaker? D: As you get older, it’s harder to meet people. I was surrounded by married people. The matchmakers introduce you to people you wouldn’t normally meet in your day-to-day life. That’s what I absolutely loved about it. I also love their feedback process after every date. You feel like you’re

She sat down in my office and said, “You have to start dating and meeting some new people. It’s Just Lunch is the dating service that I wish I had gone through.” So I called and signed on as a member. My matchmaker made it so easy for me to meet new women. She set everything up. pressure on yourself. The only question you should be asking yourself on a first date is: “Do I want to see this person again?” instead of the stressinducing “Could I see myself married to him/her?” CHEMISTRY Determining if there is chemistry on a first date is extremely important according to the singles we talked to. Have an Ice Day

When you live in a colder climate, there are two ways to deal with winter weather. You can retreat indoors and partake in the joys of seasonal hibernation: warm blanket, big couch, good book, chestnuts on the open fire, etc. Or you can wrap a scarf around your face and boldly dive into the elements. The Bavarian Icefest takes the latter approach, celebrating the chill with snow sculpting, a snowmobile sled pull, a snowball toss, and something called an “Ice Cube Scramble.” If you needed it, here’s proof that winter is nothing to be scared of. leavenworth.org

We knew the Saint Paul Winter Carnival was a big deal when we heard there were parades—plural. We were really hooked, though, when we read on the carnival’s website about its foundational legend invoking “Astraios, the god of starlight, and Eos, the goddess of the rosy-fingered moon,” whose son, named “King of the Winds,” established St. Paul as the world’s great winter city. Or something like that. Plus there’s the ice palace. And the snow maze. And the giant snow slide. And the barstool ski races. And so much more. This season has all the fun. Astraios, the god of starlight, would be proud of what St. Paul has done here. wintercarnival.com

We can’t remember what we had for breakfast, and we sure couldn’t tell you what we’re having for dinner. We look into a crystal ball, and it tells us to ask again later. Or is that a Magic 8 ball? Anyway, not everyone is as myopic as we are. The artists whose work is featured in Designs for Different Futures

at the Philadelphia Museum of Art are, in fact, considerably more farsighted. That doesn’t make them fortunetellers. The designs in this exhibition—robotic baby feeders, edible-insect farms, and more inventions out of a science fiction fever dream—explore only what’s possible, not what’s inevitable. We don’t know what tomorrow holds. But these designers show the contours of the future. philamuseum.org

But Ruby City, which opened in October, is a work of art in itself. Designed by acclaimed architect David Adjaye, this glittering red monument to the arts was a dream of the late salsa heiress Linda Pace, whose impressive collection and legacy will live on here for years. Watch Home Movies This summer, the Museum of Modern Art closed for a $400 million renovation that was also billed as something of a reimagining. It reopened in October, introducing new gallery space and a new approach to presenting one of the world’s great collections of modern and contemporary art. The grand reopening was accompanied by several compelling new exhibitions, including Private Lives Public Spaces, which features the work of amateur filmmakers, recorded mostly on 16 and 8 mm film stock. This overview of the home movie era demonstrates how, even before the advent of the smartphone, people longed to become prolific documentarians of their own lives. moma.org

A city rich in history, Baltimore holds strong to its roots while embracing the present and looking forward to a bright future. By Susan B. Barnes

baltimore has a long history of creativity. A hotbed of milling and manufacturing and the home of the esteemed Maryland Institute College of Art, the city is filled with makers. It’s these craftspeople, artists, and builders who give Charm City its charm. Among the makers to meet while visiting Baltimore: Alisa Brock, who creates custom laser-cut journals and note-

books at her studio, Drama MaMa Bookshop, where she also teaches bookbinding classes. Annie Howe, an alum of MICA, encourages others to let their creativity shine through her papercutting workshops and artwork. Mark McLaughlin and Arch Watkins of Old Line Spirits, a distillery in the city’s Highlandtown neighborhood, where you can take a guided tour and sip whiskey and rum. This holiday season, hand-

made goods will be a central part of the Christmas Village in West Shore Park. Inspired by Germany’s Christkindl markets, this Inner Harbor extravaganza is both indoors and outdoors, with traditional German-style wooden huts hosting vendors selling classic European food and drinks. Get into the spirit by sipping a hot mug of gluhwein while browsing unique holiday gifts. Makers will continue to stand in the spotlight thanks

maryland is a state rich in diversity—historic, natural, and cultural. Dig into mari-

time history in Annapolis, or head to Southern Maryland, along the Chesapeake, to learn more about the Civil War and the War of 1812. On the beaches of the Eastern Shore, nature comes to life—keep an eye out for wild ponies and take advantage of the abundant birdwatching opportunities. Along the Eastern Continental Divide in Western Maryland, the serene forests and parks are the perfect places to kick back and relax. Closer to Baltimore, take in a show at Merriweather Post Pavilion, or visit the city’s myriad museums. With all that there is to see and do throughout the Free State, the Maryland Office of Tourism has developed a few itineraries to help get the planning started. A trip around the Great

Chesapeake Bay Loop takes you alongside the largest estuary in the U.S., past charming waterfront towns. But travelers aren’t the only ones who flock here—nearly 1 million waterfowl birds pass through the Chesapeake on their annual migration, resting and feeding in its waterways. Seafood lovers will delight in following the Maryland Crab & Oyster Trail and sampling the state’s best fresh oysters, steamed Chesapeake Bay blue crab, and soft-shell crabs. The trail highlights seafood festivals while exploring the distinct regional offerings of this culturally and geographically diverse state. most visitors to Baltimore—and Maryland in general—are united by one quest: to find the best crab cake. Well, the search is over. Baltimore’s best crab cakes can be found at Jimmy’s Famous Seafood, a Maryland institution that’s served up crab cakes and fresh seafood for 45 years. Jimmy’s also offers gluten-free crab cakes, so everyone can enjoy. It might be hard to veer from the crab cakes, but a further look at the menu reveals other favorites, including the seafood “popcorn,” with fried shrimp, clams, and oysters served with seafood sauce. Still hungry? To satiate big appetites, try the enormous Seafood UFO: a crab cake, fried shrimp, fried oysters, shrimp salad, and Chesapeake mustard, all served on homemade Greek bread. and all the major attractions that the nation’s capital has to offer visitors. In addition to its mix of downtown and upcountry experiences, one-third—or 93,000 acres—of the county is reserved for agricultural use. Montgomery County also has a thriving craft brewing scene. Go for a pint or try a flight at Waredaca Brewing Company, True Respite Brewing Company, Silver Branch Brewing Company, and Elder Pine Brewing & Blending Company. Each offers its own unique flavors and atmosphere. On the cultural side of things, check out the contemporary art exhibits and outdoor sculpture at Glenstone Museum, take in a performance at The Music Center at Strathmore, or explore the region’s history at the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park. When you’re ready to call it a day, there are plenty of accommodations to choose from in Montgomery County, including cozy bed-andbreakfasts and modern hotels. Two to consider are the Inn at Tusculum Farm, which boasts a history dating back to 1747, and the Canopy by Hilton Washington DC Bethesda North, near the White Flint metro stop in North Bethesda’s bustling Pike & Rose neighborhood. The Weikels opened their Dogtopia dog daycare center last June in the St. Louis suburb of St. Peters. “Zach always wanted to be his own boss,” Mark says. “I support him and help him achieve his aspirations and goals. It’s a wonderful thing for a dad.” Together, the father and son intend to run the best dog daycare in their area. They share Dogtopia’s focus on outstanding customer service, and on providing a great experience for “every single pet parent and every one of their furry friends,” Zach says. Dogtopia franchises are designed to make it easy to drop off and pick up dogs. Each location offers open-play environments that encourage dogs to socialize and exercise. Special air filtration and rubberized flooring protects dogs’ health and safety. Every location also has webcams that allow pet owners to check on their dogs whenever they want. The Weikels had extensive experience in retail. They credit Dogtopia’s solid business plan and company training for putting them on the

path to success in their new business venture. Mark and Zach visited a variety of Dogtopia franchises, including one owned by another father-son team in Pennsylvania. Including couples and siblings who have gone into business together, about 40 percent of Dogtopia franchises are family-run, according to the company. “We are proud to support our Dogtopian families through robust training on Dogtopia fundamentals, operations, marketing, and on-the-job training,” says Neil Gill, the president and CEO of

The foundation funds the training of service dogs for veterans, youth literacy programs, and employment initiatives for adults with autism.

how to build for the future now franchising is an excellent way to build a family asset that will provide wealth now and build security for future generations, says Jack Johnson, who co-founded The Franchise Insiders with his wife, Jill. Their no-fee consulting firm connects clients to the franchise opportunities that suit them best. “I’ve seen a family fund a business that grows into a

multimillion-dollar empire,” Johnson says. “Mom and Dad are able to retire early, and trusts are set up for the kids so they won’t have to worry.” Each client typically starts with one franchise, Johnson says. Once that franchise is turning a profit, clients may continue to invest and open multiple units. “Just like with a stock and bond portfolio, The Franchise

Jack and Jill Johnson know that certain franchises are meant for certain clients.

Insiders can help our clients diversify with a smart mix of franchises to keep them protected in any economy,” he says. “The goal is building their portfolio to three or more franchises within 10 years, netting them $400,000-plus per year.” Franchising has evolved— it’s not just burger joints and sub shops anymore, Johnson says. Today, clients can invest in businesses specializing in everything from pool service to fitness. “There truly is something for everyone.” The Franchise Insiders works with franchisors and knows from experience how a client will fit with a company’s culture. A free “Business Builder Assessment” helps clients determine what franchise is right for them. The process is designed to help clients make the right decision by choosing a franchise that will not only make money, but will suit the client’s needs and wants. For example, franchise ownership can often improve a client’s work-life balance. When Vik and Hira Patel began their search for a franchise, they didn’t know what to expect, so they contacted The Franchise Insiders. The Johnsons helped narrow their search by identifying the Patels’ goals, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. With the help of The Franchise Insiders, the Patels launched a Wow 1 Day Painting franchise in the Chicago area. “We aim to help our clients build a franchise empire that will provide them and future generations with security that a 9-to-5 job simply cannot,” Johnson says.

tenance industry with pavement sealers, as well as a full line of maintenance products and equipment. “Most of our franchises are co-owned by or employ family members,” Hedlesky says. Father-and-son duo David and Jake Bernath bought their first SealMaster, which serves Indiana, in 2017. When they purchased an additional Kentucky territory, Jake’s sister, Mary Jane, relocated to help ensure a smooth transition. “This gives us another set of eyes, with a vested interest in the business, to manage daily operations,” Jake says. Jake’s wife, Jodi, and brother, Caleb, work for the franchises, too. Jay Pakalski bought his Wisconsin SealMaster territory in 1997, when his children—Max, Alexandra, and

Jack—were all under 5. With his wife, Victoria, managing the household, their teamwork has served the family and business well. As youngsters, Max and Jack often accompanied their father to work. As they grew up, Jay says, “I told them if they wanted to be involved, or someday hold ownership, it’s entirely up to them.” Now young adults, they ultimately developed integral roles in the business, ensuring that Jay was well-positioned to purchase an additional SealMaster territory in Minnesota. “I knew with two franchises, my biggest issue would be having people in place I knew and trusted,” Jay says. He also hired his brother-inlaw. “I have three very capable, genuine, honest people I have complete trust in,” he says of his leadership team.

LUNCHBOXWAX: A BADASS BRAND IN SEARCH OF BOLD LEADERS

How does a brand devoted solely to body waxing keep producing fresh headlines and storefronts? The secret is in the culture. LunchboxWax doesn’t do inauthenticity. When CEO Debi Lane founded the body waxing brand in 2010, she knew there were others in the wax-only industry, and one big brand dominating the space at the time, but that didn’t make her shy away. In fact, she leaned in. She knew that there was room and a need for a brand that was built with one main focus – its people. “We knew we had a superior waxing method to our competition, but what we wanted to do was humanize the guest experience and empower our workforce – that is what was missing out there.” And that was the birth of the LunchboxWax culture. “Make no mistake,” Lane says, “we are passionate about our culture, but we are equally focused on the business side. Hair keeps growing and we keep ripping it out – it’s a good business model!”

“When we meet with potential franchisees, we’re clear that they need to truly buy-in,” says Lane. “From one community serving another, to honoring all bodies, to our culture of beauty, collaboration, and purpose, what we hear back is pure excitement. They understand that we are building something very special – a movement! With what other brand can you embrace tenets like that?” That uncompromising spirit has paid off. Listed as one of the country’s fastest-growing franchises, with write-ups in Entrepreneur and the New York Post, and a turn-key model with modest start-up costs, LunchboxWax is poised to tap the $14B waxing and salon market. But the proof resides at the ground level. “Our franchise partners strive to be a positive force in their communities, personally and

professionally,” says Lane. “And our commitments are paying off, from our guests to waxologists to franchise owners, I’ll gladly stack our reviews against any other brand.” Potential partners are lining up. Before they decide to join the LunchboxWax family, Lane encourages them to visit a salon. She cites: “We want them to feel what we are talking about – what makes us stand apart from our competition. Once they experience our waxing technique and vibe, they’re hooked – just like our guests!” “We instantly thought it’d be a fit for our community,” says Bridge D’Urso, a franchise partner in Oregon. “Then I went into one of the salons to see for myself, and there was no doubt this would be my next adventure.”

“Our mission has remained the same since our inception: be bold, be real, and success will follow.” - Debi Lane, Founder and CEO

Fellow franchise owner Neal Habas agrees: “Walk into any salon, and the competence and kindness is palpable. The energy resonates and tells a great story. It’s natural to want to be a part of it.” With a number of prime territories open, endless opportunity awaits. But as Lane says, “Only the bold need apply.” Learn more about LunchboxWax franchising by calling 833-426-1198 or visit lunchboxfranchise. com/sw.

become a role model josh and ben collins want to build a business their daughter will be proud of. The couple found an opportunity with LunchboxWax. The company’s mission of empowering women and welcoming every person clearly aligned with their views and the values they want to instill in their daughter, who is almost 2 years old. Regardless of whether she goes into the family business when she grows up, Ben says, “Our daughter will have a lot of love for the company.” LunchboxWax was built to be inclusive, says founder and CEO Debi Lane. “The intention of LunchboxWax from the start was to make everyone feel welcome and was built into

the company culture from day one,” she says. “The culture is what makes us family and attracts franchise partners who want to be a part of something bigger.” With a LunchboxWax franchise, those partners can leave a legacy for their family and have an impact on the community they serve. Ben and Josh operate two LunchboxWax salons in the Dallas area right now and plan to open more. Josh, an interior designer who dabbled in real estate, runs their franchises fulltime. Ben is a business partner but maintains his job as the senior vice president of a highend furniture retailer. They had no firsthand experience with waxing when a friend and business partner called about his superb experience as a walk-in guest

in Los Angeles. He enjoyed the company’s fun and cheeky branding and told the two they should go and check it out online, Josh says. Josh and Ben liked what they saw and flew to LunchboxWax’s Boise, Idaho, headquarters to meet with LunchboxWax staff. They fell in love with the idea of offering a treatment that would send customers away smiling. LunchboxWax salons offer 15- and 30-minute services centered on soft-wax techniques to remove hair from a guest’s face, body, legs, or feet. Although the service is speedy, each guest gets a luxury-spa experience with music from LunchboxWax’s specialized playlist and a signature scent filling salon lobbies. “I love to have people feeling good about themselves when they leave,” Josh says.
